Venture-Captain Drandle Drenge, a stout and hardy Taldan with thin, graying hair and a thick, bushy mustache, unfurls a map on his butcher-block table and places a meaty finger on the parchment. “The abandoned district of Beldrin’s Bluff was once the gem of Absalom’s Precipice District—now it is but a weathered crag of broken rock at the edge of the roiling sea. When the great quake hit ten years ago, entire blocks of the Bluff sheared from the mainland. Cliffside tearooms and exclusive estates fell into the waves and carried hundreds of nobles to a watery grave. An elite academy, called the Tri-Towers Yard, remained on the mainland, but sank wholesale into the earth. Children unfortunate enough to survive the quake lay pinned under debris as sewer water slowly rose from the ground and drowned them. Nearly every student perished."

“Today, crumbled stone walls and weed-filled lots sprawl where gentlemen’s clubs once filled with pipe smoke and hobnobbing lords. The Drownyard—er, that’s what the ill-mannered call the school these days—lies behind a fence of black iron pikes, constructed by the families of the dead to discourage morbid trespassers."

“Even respected archaeological groups have been denied official access. Our own Society has itched to explore the site ever since the quake—that is, ever since we discovered that the school fell through the roof of a lost necropolis. Unfortunately, the emotional trauma attached to the school has remained fresh. But finally, after ten years of mourning, the politically-connected families of dead students have sanctioned our delve request.”

With a toothy smile and a clap, Drenge says, “I’m pleased to announce that I’ve selected your team for the delve. I want you to find a way into the necropolis, document your findings with professional detail, and recover artifacts of historical significance. The Society is interested in one artifact in particular—a two-finger ring topped with a ruby salamander. Any questions?”

A halfling in light armor walks into the room. Axe, dagger and a piece of rock fixed to a thin rope on her belt, longbow and shield on her back. She looks at Edyth and a smile appears on her face.

Hello, Edyth! Nice to see you again.

She offers a handshake: Don't worry. I've bathed since our little sewer expedition.

She looks around.

Where's the rest of our current crew?

After receiving the briefing, Gi eyes Dreng: Should we expect any issues with either locals or any ... creatures - underneath the building? Or looters for that matter.

a wild looking Nagaji walks into the room, shortly before the Venture Captain begins his speech. When he finishes speaking, Fundir looks about the room and acknowledges his new companions.

Nergi looks at Edyth after her question, eyebrow raised.

Well, you know... Have a swim in a river or something so you don't smell of manure and whatnot.

She then turns towards the Nagaji: Greetings! I for one -KNOW- we can!, she almost shouts. Because I believe in you, guys.

After a brief pause, she continues.

So what do you do anyway? Edyth here has a way with some form of water control, or some such. I'm deaf, but otherwise hardy, so - we share the spearhead position? You look tough. With those scales and all.

"I am a Hunter." The nagaji replies. "I am attuned to nature, and her ways. So much so, I have learned to take on aspects of Her gifts to aid me in my endeavors. She grants me gifts of some spells, but.." the Nagaji trails off, running his hand over the pommel of the sword belted to his side. Upon seeing the Nagaji and hearing his reply to Nergi, Edyth will smile at both.

She then turns to Dreng, Are we likely going to encounter a lot of undead, ghouls, ghosts, or what have you, if we're going to a place like that?

Unfortunately no knowledge to speak of, unless Nature helps, which I don't think it does.

From the shadows comes out undersized figure. Apparently, the creature was here a long time, and listened to every word but didn't let on.

If we'll meet an undead, I'll be helpful. I know a lot of them. If I remember, of course. Sometimes I forget things. And sometimes I don't.

Before you stands a gnome. His skin looks gray with a bluish tint. His dark hair laid in a strange bizarre hairstyle, sticking out like stalagmites. His facial expression is very active, eyes from time to time become out of focus, as if he listens to something only he can hear. Despite a certain strangeness, its overall behavior could be called pretty, but he exudes a very sinister aura.

Greetings to all. My name is Kyorli, and I'm a sorcerer. I can help you with different magic... Best of all, by the way, I scare others! Oh yes, I scare just fine. I don't know, I think it's funny when just such an aggressive orc runs away from you, screaming and crying. Always laugh to colic.

He says all this very quickly. Then his speech becomes almost mumbling.

So. Undead. What I know about the undead. Once a group of people wanted me to burn, because they thought I linked to the undead... too much. Don't remember what happened after that, but the fact that now in front of you I stand... However, I'm not sure what happened. But I know for sure that what I like most of all in adventures! This is a good and honest paladin in my team! With paladins I'm never bored. Hi, baby!

He winks at Nergi. Then his face becomes completely serious. He turns his head to Edyth.

Bath. You asked her about the bath? Bath is such a thing where you can wash yourself. Not everybody tried this yet, but progress does not stand still. One good book I read that a True Knight should bathe every month. Even if not soiled. Supposedly this preserves the purity of faith. Nonsense of course.

Then he stops and sinks into a deep thought. From time to time he nods, as if agreeing with someone.

Gi smiles when the nagaji speaks of his attunement with nature. A creature after her own heart! She merely nods in acknowledgement as he speaks, not noticing the other person in the room until others collectively turn their heads towards his direction.

She eyes the gnome as he speaks, surprised by the amount well hidden, shadowy places in briefing areas. It was not the first time, and probably not the last, so she just shrugs it off.

I am merely in Deadeye's service. It might be a title I aspire to, perhaps, but calling me a paladin right now would be a bit far fetched, my blue-tinted comrade - Kyorli, is it?, she asks, to be sure to get the name right.

As for bathing, it's purely for practical purposes. You don't want to smell like our last little expedition. As we found out, you can be religious while covered in dung, but you can also be religious surrounded by white marble. Not many gods discriminate between the two. But while Deadeye's shrines are not made of marble, I don't prefer the former.

She offers a handshake - Call me Nergi, please.

Nergi spends some time looking for a tailor in the Coins and purchases a noble's outfit for the occasion. No additional jewelry. ( 75 gp )

The next day, she'll rent a room at an inn with a hot bath, and buy a block of soap. ( 2 gp, 7 cp total )

If anyone needs a handout for these, let me know.

Aterwards, she dons her armor, just in case, puts the clothes over it and takes at least the axe, ready for the banquet.

Fundir decides his clothing, at least, must be updated and visits a tailor. He purchases a set of courtiers clothing before finding a park in which to camp for the night. The next morning, he rises and visits the public baths before spending the day in various parks and natural areas. Towards evening, he returns to his camp and changes into his new finery before meeting the party at their designated spot. He arrives, pulling at his collar and clearly uncomfortable. His weapons are in place and his armor is partially hidden under his clothing, but he still looks like a boy.. young snake.. playing dress up. "I hope thissss evening goessss quickly!" he says.

Feel free to purchase your finery if you want to and haven't

You arrive at the address on the invitation to find a sprawling estate surrounded by a tall, wrought-iron fence and overly decorated in statuary, fountains, and a carefully landscaped garden. The over-the-top opulence of the Dacilane house interior is mindboggling; gilded furniture, painted ceilings, gold-spun wallpaper, and valuable Chelish rugs that, if sold, could easily feed a family in the Puddles District for a year. Despite her obvious wealth, the Lady Dacilane’s grief seems very real, and she does her best during the dinner (a 10-course affair) to keep her composure as she receives proper introductions.

Toward the end of the dinner, she leans in to talk to you. Others, impressed with your attire and her favor, look on jealously. She finally broaches the subject of her daughter and the Tri- Towers Yard.

“My daughter Junia was one of so many children lost. Hundreds of them pinned under the rubble in that sinkhole. The black water rising—the kids screaming.” She quiets for a moment. “None of us could get to them.”

Sense Motive DC 15:

You get the distinct impression she actually thinks of you as second class citizens, but knows you're the only ones who can do anything.

She seems desperate for any news whatsoever of her beloved Junia. Lady Dacilane gestures to an enormous painting of her daughter—a rigid, sharp-featured young girl with long black hair—that looms over the entire banquet hall. "This is her, in all her beauty. I nothing of the necropolis, but I recall my daughter once mentioned that lesser children— not my Junia mind you—skipped class to tell ghost stories by candlelight in an abandoned corridor beneath the school. I pray that wasn't her final resting place..."

Although attempting to be courteous, Nergi is apparently not enjoying herself at the banquet. With all the wealth wasted on the illusion of grandeur in this place, she almost feels sick and barely touches the food. During Miranda's speech, she drops her jaw in awe. After the Lady of the house is done, she vigorously stands up from the table and addresses her, almost shouting:

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20

You ignorant, selfish hypocrite! And what exactly did you do give closure to -ANYONE- else, whose children, sisters, and brothers perished in that complex?

You lock yourself in your ivory tower, mourning your kid all this time?! It's been ten years, woman! TEN YEARS! You could have used some of your wealth to fund an excavation. Maybe you could have given the dead a proper burial, your daughter included. Did hat not cross your mind? Of course, that would mean you would have to give up some resources. Or is it not worth it?!

She pauses, takes a breath, then continues:

"Lesser children". You make me sick. You know what? if you have such a problem -WASTING- your wealth, here. Let me help you out.

The halfling quickly removes her expensive outfit, and throws it into Miranda's lap.

Here. This should be worth roughly 70 gold. It's not much, but it's a start. Go hire someone to dig your kid out of the rubbles. Maybe if you are lucky enough, you will hire a father of one of the other students, and they will have less of a problem feeding the remains of their families.

My clan's home was razed by wyverns. The survivors buried the dead, and moved on with their lives. I suggest you do the same, you elitist, poor excuse of a decent being.

She then turns towards her companions: I'll spend the night under the stars, near our ruins. Look for me there.

The halfling turns away from the gathering and starts walking towards the exit.

Goodbye

On her way out, she quietly swears and mutters to herself: Ten years... sitting on her tush, doing nothig. Idiot.

Kyorli comes without any special nice clothes but in a very good mood! He smiles a lot and and before start the meal, he with pleasure bypasses banquet hall, with delight and without any hesitation examining room. Few times he accidentally pushes the other people (servants and even noblemen), but it wasn't even paying his attention.

Sense Motive: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (20) - 2 = 18

He really-really doesn't like that attitude what he notices. While he thinks what such an evil to be done in retaliation, Negri begins to express her opinion. Kyorli with delight listening to the honest halfling.

"Still, I was right! With paladins I'll NEVER get bored! I almost love her!" - he says after she finished.

Then looks to the lady of the house.

I know a guy who makes cool jewelry from skulls. You can make a nice knob for that chandelier! To mourn your daughter, looking into her eye sockets will be even more dramatic, I think. In any case, you will be able to really pass for a VERY eccentric lady! And what a great show you can do with this, uhh! Just ask me, I'll give you a couple of ideas for free. And of course I'll try to find her skull for you! You don't even have to ask!

He gets up, quickly bowing to the woman taken aback in a completely quiet room, turns around and hurries over to Negri.

It would be necessary to keep pace with her, because it's always those paladins get into trouble! Gnome-rescuer runs to help! Hey, Fundir, let's go!

Let's just say if we were playing this when it came out, a couple of faction missions just failed.

When you arrive at Beldrin’s Bluff in Absalom’s Precipice District, you are greeted with a macabre sight. Beldrin’s Bluff is a rotting ghost town at the edge of a hungry sea. Throughout the derelict landscape, seagulls perched on splintered timbers reflect your passage in their glassy black eyes. Overhead, dark clouds move ashore with the promise of a storm.

A fence of black iron pikes surrounds a block-wide yard. Dead tree branches reach out from the fence like the arms of emaciated prisoners desperate to escape. A man is on the inside, cutting the trees down. Some of the dismembered branches remain, stuck in place by knotty elbows swollen around the iron.

PAL. Here we have an important mission. You know, what is this place and what happened here. We were sent here personally by famous and noble Lady Miranda Dacilane! She finally decided to bury her unhappy daughter. But you know what it means to talk to the mother who lost her child? It still, though it's been so long, can you imagine buddy, still heartbroken! In the middle of our meeting she began to sob. She said she was so sorry about all these poor victims... She said that it's so sad that she can't bury them all and can't help all theirs loved ones! And here we are, listened to her grief... But I'm afraid without a key. I'm afraid poor heartbroken woman, starting to remember her beloved daughter just couldn't remember that she was supposed to give us the key! If you happened to lose loved ones, you understand what I mean! But I did not say most important! This fair halfling maiden is Lady's Myranda personal agent. She belongs to an ancient order of light, who dedicated themselves to the repose of the souls! You have to let us in. It's really important. We need to get to Tri-Towers Yard!

.)) I didn't know about the key as a real person, and my character obviously doesn't know that. The key may be someone else in our party, and Kyorli must continue.

For a moment Kyorli looks really surprised. His reaction is so sincere that even his comrades can't understand - is it part of a bluff or even a crazy gnome is a little shocked. Then his expression changes to a friendly smile.

Deris, nice to meet you! You know, I literally said to Lady Miranda at the meeting, almost word for word - how cool would it be to bring her daughter at home!

His eyes were looking enthusiastically and with deep respect.

You know, I always dreamed of becoming a real hero too! And the fact that I am standing next to a man who saved so many lives - it's perfect! We all must much to learn from you! By the way, I didn't introduce myself and didn't introduce my friends! My name is Galadril Sasuke, the famous master of salvation of people who disappeared a long time ago, and these are my comrades!

He turns and makes a wide gesture, pointing at his companions. At the same time while a strange man can't see his face, he makes a desperate grimace, as if imploring others to help him in this performance.

He points his finger at Edyth - "That's our expert on baths. People are sometimes not too clean, when you find them ten years later, so without such kind of specialist we just couldn't work at all".

Then he points to Fundir - "That's our master of connection with people. Rescued persons sometimes are shocked when they return at home 10 years later. They are weaned from that place, you know. And then our specialist helps to cope with the shock."

And in the end he makes a gesture at Negri - "About her I told you. A Holy Maiden, but with a flair for cool performances! Two in one, so to speak."

Kyorli finishes and looks at Deris the most innocent look.

So, now you know everything about us! Well, let's go finally to the Mrs. Heraks. And on the way you will tell us exactly how you saved everybody! This should be known to the whole town, for sure! Everyone should know and praise our hero!

Did he just say what I think he said?

Ok, Nergi might be naive, but not -that- naive. She doesn't trust this "saviour". Everything he says reeks of some sort of deception or ulterior motive. Surely the students would at least contact their families by this point.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23

She also pings him for evil.

As the mad gnome continues the gambit, Nergi focuses her powers on the man...

Nergi:

He comes off as a little unhinged, but you feel like he is genuine in his manner. He also does not radiate as evil.

Given your enthusiasm he opens the gate for you, "Please come come. You have to see a class in action. Follow me!"

And with that, he leads you to one of the buildings. It's a damp and dilapidated one room affair.

The ruined paths of the Tri-Towers Yard wind their way around black ponds and gray, shattered buildings. Powerful fragrances precede one roofless hall where a thin path meanders through an abundance of flower arrangements in wild bloom. These are the original funerary flowers from 10 years ago, unnaturally preserved by the magic of the necropolis and growing into a small flower garden. Just off this path is the entrance to a small classroom—this is either where Marlinchen leads you.

Ten students dressed in checkered uniforms sit stiffly at wooden desks, staring straight ahead. No one moves. At the front of the class, a conservatively dressed woman leans against the wall.

They all turn to look at you with vacant, dead eyes... They're clearly not what they seem. In fact after a moment, you're confident that you can see right through them.

Knowledge Religion DC 12:

These aren't undead, they're just a psychic manifestation, phantoms of a sort. You could likely destroy them with divine energy still.

He walks over to talk to the teacher. She moves in a strange jerking fashion, like a puppet. They whisper to each other.

The children stare.

Sense Motive DC 15:

The teacher moves more strangely than just her gait. You think he's somehow doing it.. . but you don't think he knows that's he's doing it.

While walking, Kyorli once turns to his companions and makes an expressive gesture, his hand cutting the throat. Maybe it means "we're screwed", or conversely "he's finished" - but the fact that gnome is configured rigidly and understands what is really happening becomes clear to his companions (if they had any doubt).

Knowledge Religion: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

Kyorli whispers, "It's not undead, not real ghosts. I feel this is absolutely accurate. These are some kind of phantoms that are artificially created by somebody's will. However, funny, but if one of us is able to banish the undead it will works the same as if it was the undead."

Sense Motive: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (12) - 2 = 10

Kyorli does not notice anything unusual (assuming of course it is appropriate such a word), but innate sense of danger forces him to retreat behind Negri.

"What are we going to do with this, companions?" - still in a whisper he asks. "Still fooling around or triple the massacre?"

Apparently the children hear. They turn in unison with vacant eyes, What do you mean?

There is no sound, but their mouths are easy to read.

Deris leans in and speaks with the ghostly teacher. She leans in and her mouth simply hangs open. No words form, no breath escapes. After some time he turns and looks to you, [b]"Ah, excellent. She says she can help. She'll lead us to the entrance you seek.

The question is, Pathfinders, what do you do?

rules question:
Request. What is the skill check, to understand whether Deris undead or a living being? Is it Knowledge (Religion) or Perception against Disguise? Or it's just clear that he is not disguised undead?

It'd be a Heal check I'd say, but it's obvious he's just a crazy old man.

Nergi can lip read. Did she see the whispered conversation?

I would also like to focus for a few turns, and cast detect magic on the class. Looking for necromancy, specifically.
