Female Changeling (Annis Hag) Oracle of Life 6; 32/32 hp

Seeing everyone but Rholf headed to the temple, Larissa is torn between returning to the mansion and following along, but meeting with the elders doesn't sound like fun, so she heads off to find Kendra and tell her about the latest excitement. She, of course, mostly talks about the Blue Lady and how beautiful and sad she seemed, about the horrible torture room (but quite transparently doesn't talk about the iron maiden and Castiel's odd behavior - but she clams up if pressed about it), and about the ghosts of prisoners past that were defeated. "Oh! And I prayed to Sarenrae, and she sent a flying, glowing scimitar to smite him! It hit him every time, too, and sent him to the Boneyard where he belongs!!"

Insert breathless and wide-eyed delivery as appropriate. ;-)

If left to her own devices, after cleaning up, she can be found staring at and studying her new dagger.

M Human Cleric / 6

DM:
Recognize the voice at all?

Rholf will, having drawn his new hammer, open the door with enough force to push it open completely, but not hard enough to slam it open, and peer inside.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Rholf:

Spoiler:

You see a small room. There's a table, and a man sitting at the table.

He looks like: this.

He beckons you in.
"Welcome Mr. Kastigarr......"

You see a bottle of wine, and three small wineglasses before him on the table.

"Cheliaxian; Vino Bollitore........only the besssst."

He gestures towards it; all fingernails sharp, pointed. A signet ring, red backed, with a golden circle and pentogram on it.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Castiel;......let me reperuse the backsection detailing the Whispering Way, maybe I might figure out more stuff's to have Father Grimburrow relate to you........

Kendra's bleak spirits are uplifted a bit by Larissa's excited chattering;

"Wow, I.....I wish I had your panache for life, Larissa,......that all sounds so amazing; I......I don't know what to do; stay here in Ravengro, or move on to Lepidstadt. It's so far away; I've only been there a few times......I know what you'd do though I bet."

Male Human (Varisian) Paladin of Iomedae (Undead Scourge) 4

I can’t really remember what we’ve already discovered about the Whispering Way; I know Castiel flubbed a knowledge check early on to know much about them, I don’t know if we’ve since learnt more ... trying not to get player knowledge mixed up with character knowledge.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

right on; I think they're pretty secretive. I just want to reread over the details real good so I'm not just pulling stuff out of my butt.

"I never drink with ssstrangers. Not in private, anyway. While I appreciate the offer, I must decline."

Knowledge (Religion/ID monster): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Making no move to enter the room, Rholf continues... "How is it, good sir, that you know me? I don't remember meeting you."

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Castiel; Grimburrow continues;.....
"What little I've ferreted out of the whispering way;.......they do not write down their history or their most powerful secrets, instead passing these things down from teacher to pupil by whispers alone.

They revere death. But most importantly,.....they revere lichdom. They seek a new world order, with none of the waste and chaos of life. The exact details vary from practicioner to practitioner, but......they seek a dead world, under the wise leadership of undead sorcerer kings. Lichdom is the ultimate......personification of power.
Nothing else is sacred. Nor holy.

They've been around for millenia. A very dangerous philosophy."

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Rholf:

Spoiler:

He's....human enough.....

sense motive: something is.....very wrong. That's your hunch.

"I don't think we've ever met, but we have acquaintances in common.
And an appreciation of.....kettleberry wine.
It's a rare treat, wouldn't you say?"

He unstops the bottle, and pours some in each of the three small glasses.

"I am......Mr. A. There; now I no longer have you at.....that disadvantage."

"I've never been to Lepidstadt! Why are you thinking of going there? Is it interesting? Ravengo is a small town, I suppose, but the orphanage was in a larger town and it seemed like no one saw you when you were out for a walk - or if they did," she indicates each of her mismatched eyes in turn, "you wish they hadn't. Ravengo seems to be a place where people notice each other - they may not like each other, but they know they're about."

She looks out the window for a moment. "Or is that why you want to leave? Because everyone knows who you are? If you go to Lepidstadt, what will you do?"

Obviously, if Kendra knows what Larissa would do, she's the only one in the conversation that does. ;-)

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

"I'm not sure yet. Maybe pursue a higher degree at the university...I've always been quite apart from everybody here in Ravengro. The professor's daughter. Kendra, the Professor's daughter. Not Kendra. It's like I have nothing that is me. This town;....it's what I mostly know. I feel stuck here, but I don't know what I want to do.
I know I'm not making much sense at all. This is home, but.....I feel like a guest. And now that father's gone, well......what's to keep me here?"

M Human Cleric / 6

DM:
"I don't mean to be rude, sir, but I've had a rather long day. Perhaps you could explain what business you have with me, that we may conclude it, and I can be on my way."

Rholf brings a spell (Bull's Strength) to mind as he watches the captain of creepy pour wine for THREE...

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Rholf:

Spoiler:

"Mr. Kastigarr," he says, looking only at the third glass while he speaks, "what do you know about....that which lies beyong the veil of this....living world?"
There's absolutely no sign of validation of the brusk nature of your call for conclusion in his statement. He speaks as if you're both having a nice chat over a glass of wine........or as if, by not giving in to emotion, he's obliquely chiding an impertinent toddler.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Rholf:

Spoiler:
He speaks with the same matter-of-fact tone as the quintissential psychoanalyzer.

M Human Cleric / 6

DM:
"I know where and with whom I shall be when the time comes for me to travel there. I know that the time and manner in which folk transition is often not the way they expected. I know that all folk wind up there. And, I know that some folk require assistance getting there."

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Rholf:

Spoiler:

He stares at that third glass for the longest time.
Then he smiles a little, and then there's one "sniff" of laughter;
"So, in other words,........nothing. Absolutely nothing."

he "sniffs" again; stops smiling.

"nothing, at all."

reaches over to the glass, and, with the long, sharp claw of a middle finger, darts the point into the wine, and then withdrawing a bit,......softly touches the rim of the glass, circling the rim;......and it starts to hum a high pitched hum.

M Human Cleric / 6

DM:
"As you say. So with that, I bid you good day."

Rholf walks, hammer in hand, back downstairs to purchase his wine.

That's ok Heathy. I wasn't REEELY hoping, I mean expecting, a flute of Charm Person,... ;P Seriously, Edwin's shtick is more oration/detective anyway. So if we need to sell the flute to make the described cash payout, that's quite alright with Edwin. Although he'll give it a test run first, of course! ;)

With Castiel;

"Indeed? Very interesting. Tell me father, are there any local stories regarding these secretive folk? While perhaps not overtly helpful in themselves, I find that almost all local legends contain at least a grain of truth to them. If one digs deep enough."

Edwin begins searching through the meticulously organized file cabinet that is his brain, trying to remember if any of the books at the professors' library had a title that might be helpful,...

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Rholf:

Spoiler:
as you turn, the door closes.
Behind the door, now closed, you can hear a hushed conversation between two people. One is......female. And you hear glasses clink together.
Then silence. As you turn to walk away.
and you make out; "no,....I do not think he is....." and you hear laughter.

I'll probably have to do a little rescouring of source materials; among other things to properly answer the question.....

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

I gotta crash though.

Male Human (Varisian) Paladin of Iomedae (Undead Scourge) 4

“The ghost of Mrs Hawkran thought that they somehow removed, captured or bound her husband’s ghost – and the nature of the markings we observed on the outside of the prison seemed to give some credence to her theory,” says Castiel. “What would they want with, presumably, this specific spirit? And the spirit of a probably good and lawful man at that?”

"Well, there are certainly multiple beliefs, cults and even actual churches, however unpleasant, that would supposedly have use for the soul of a good and just man. Add a few more to the list if the 'good and just man' were somehow convinced, by argument or trickery, to abandon his beliefs and/or somehow betray himself and his position." Edwin shrugs.

"Sorry, too many possible suspects and theories down that path, with no facts to back them up. Always find the clues and facts first,... THEN form the theory. Otherwise you end up bending the facts to fit the theory." He smiles at Castiel, then look back to the priest.

"I do apologize. Occupational hazard. You were saying?" He smiles pleasantly.

And good night to all my own self!

M Human Cleric / 6

DM:
Rholf will stow the hammer on his way to the tap room, purchase his unopened bottle of wine, bid the bar keep to "Take... care." with a glance towards the creepy's room, then he'll leave, and head off to search out the sheriff, stowing his bottle of wine in his pack as he goes.

Male Human (Varisian) Paladin of Iomedae (Undead Scourge) 4

“Certainly ... but if we can find records or tales of exactly what use such a spirit would be to such a group, it may give us a clue to their goals or whereabouts,” persists Castiel.

“I don’t know that Ravengro has the resources for such research – no offense meant good sirs,” Castiel adds to the trio of locals, “but there may be something in the Professor’s books, or perhaps at the University of Lepidstadt, when we go there to return the volumes that Lorrimor borrowed.”

Human Wizard 6

"Lepistadt would certainly be a good place to continue our research. I will continue looking in the Professor's library, but I fancy we have found most of what lies in his collection. On the topic of the Whispering Way, at least; there may still be other interesting books."

"On another note," Alinya turns to the sheriff, "Many thanks for your kind donation. Rest assured we will use it in pursuit of the foul evil-doers who brought such chaos to your village."

Alinya is now a level 4 wizard. Almost everything else remains the same, but she has some fancy new tricks :)

Male Human (Varisian) Paladin of Iomedae (Undead Scourge) 4

Oops! I totally missed the reward bit.

Castiel accepts the bag of gold with a grateful bow and an expression of thanks, and divides the money equally amongst all his companions at a suitable time.

Later though, either the same day or the next as opportunity presents, he returns to Heathmount (preferably when he is the company of Grimburrow, the Sheriff or some other honest seeming witness) and returns his share of the gold.

“I don’t wish to appear ungrateful,” he says, “but I am in need of no monetary reward beyond the spoils of war recovered from the prison. Please, use this money to better your community – repair the damage to the town hall, provide for the widows and mothers of those slain by the zombies, something like that.”

Human Wizard 6

We need to do a little count-up, and maybe think about where our money is best spent as a group. Alinya could use some more spells, but I'd be very happy to chip in for something more urgent - like magic armor for either Castiel or Rholf, or whatever else may seem good.

Alinya turns to Castiel, "If we are done here, could we please return to the manor? I would dearly like to have that bath."

Male Human (Varisian) Paladin of Iomedae (Undead Scourge) 4

"Certainly," agrees Castiel.

Male Human (Varisian) Paladin of Iomedae (Undead Scourge) 4

With a +1 keen longsword (his primary weapon) Cas has done quite well out of this adventure, and if Grimburrow allows him to keep the old Pharasmin plate armour, his AC is probably quite good for this level.

Happy to chip in if there is an obvious need elsewhere that can't be accounted for individually.

Human Wizard 6

Nice - I hadn't realized it was keen. Good loot! Did we decide who would get the ring of protection?

"Thank you, Castiel." Alinya realizes that she is getting weary, and the Professor's library will have to wait until tomorrow. "Bath then bed," she murmurs, half covering a yawn.

"Of course dear lady." Edwin murmurs with a smile and another nod of gratitude towards the sheriff.

"First regain our strength and our wits, and then sally forth for more research! But first, a breaking of our fast would not be unappreciated on my part either! Shall we?" He offers his arm to Alinya as they turn to leave.

I need to update my Char sheet. Again. ;P

Human Wizard 6

Alinya gladly takes Edwin's arm for the short walk home in the dim light.

"Hmm. I couldn't tell. Maybe.....his spirit's destruction was part of a ritual to free them; the ghosts see the warden doomed so think they can escape the prison.

It's hard to.....ascertain what these madmen are up to though."

The books were as follows:

Professor's Journal; no mindshattering insights into the Whispering Way;

a locked book with a cover of purple felt, and a golden scarab beetle symbol on the cover; a 3 dimensional symbol, more like a brooch.

And three others: On Verified Madness, about aberrations and stuff from outer space;

Serving Your Hunger, an unholy book of the evil goddess Urgothoa;

and

The Umbral Leaves, which is THE Unholy Book of that bastard Zon Kuthon.

Nothing much specific about the Whispering Way.....

Grimburrow recalls a story about the Hook Man, a Niekrowmauncer with a hooked hand that menaced some newlyweds traveling by coach on the roads hereabout, maybe 20 years ago;.....his bloody hook they found in the morning, impaled in the side of the coach.......
