Welcome to Skulls and Shackles! Feel free to use this thread to discuss everything about the game that is not in-character.

I cannot decide on what type of character I would like to play for this campaign. Originally I thought a skill heavy rogue with the pirate archtype but I also think a ranger (freebooter) would be fun. And I loved playing the duskblade in 3.5 so the magus could be awesome, too. I have not played a magus nor seen one in action yet so that may be the way to go. Anyway, just throwing some ideas out there.

The Pirate and the Freebooter as well are classes, that may very well have their only really good opportunity to shine in Skulls and Shackles.

You can play a Magus in nearly any type of campaign...

Maybe it faciliates your decision by looking at it that way?!

Hey Guys.

Dungeon Blaster how do you feel about Gunslingers? To me this AP was made for them.

I am torn between that and one of the Aquatic based races. Naturally the two are not going to mix.

I'll take a look through the Player Guide, and I am sure that it will make up my mind for me.

Hey Ross,

just call me Tim or Timbo, if you like.

The Campaign is written without firearms in mind. That´s because firearms aren´t that widespread outside Alkenstar.

I must admit that I´m glad about this, because it saves me the time of getting into the firearms-rules.

I guess that an aquatic race might be a good idea. Maybe you want to take a look at the substitution-features of the elf and half-elf. They can get an aquatic subtype or something.

See you on deck :-)

Good point about the magus.

Hey guys, I finally found time to make it to the board :-P As for characters, myself, I am open to pretty much anything, as I like to fill in the gaps of what we need.

Finding time is an important point. How do you suggest we handle the "minimum-post-requirement"? Is one post per day a pace with which everyone can live?

If someone is away from the boards (e.g. vacation...) he or she can give notice in this thread.

I'm also interested in playing an aquatic race, since it comes up only so often. I was looking at the Undine with the Alternate race traits of Flesh Chameleon (look more human) and Hydrated Vitality.

As for classes I was thinking between some sort of investigator (bard or inquisitor) or a sorcerer.

If I go with sorcerer, I'll probably aim more likely for human or like race and take the Aquatic bloodline.

Yes, one post a day minimum. Anyone who cannot commit to that should not play.

Lewis Depp wrote:

Any sort of minimum/maximum length for our daily posts? Obviously no novellas for a single post, but any general guidelines we should follow? It shouldn't be too hard to put in just a few paragraphs as a minimum daily.

There are days where I might put in a post either fairly early or fairly late in the day here, but I don't see a problem getting in at least one post.

One post min seems good to me. Just early FYI, I will be on vacation September 15th to beginning of October so my posts will be sporadic, if at all. I will try to post if I can find WiFi, as Heather will have her Nook.

And as I look at the books, I am kinda liking the idea of doing an elf fighter, with the alternate race ability Spirit of the Waters, and going with a net/trident combo, to take advantage of those feats in Ultimate Combat. Plus I think it would be wicked fun! :-D

I am thinking halfling rogue (pirate archtype) with an emphasis on skills.

Tim, any problems with the two following alternate race traits?

Adaptable Luck: Some half lings have greater control
over their innate luck. This ability gives them more
options for how they can apply their good fortune from
day to day, but also narrows its scope. Three times per day,
a half ling can gain a +2 luck bonus on an ability check,
attack roll, saving throw, or skill check. If half lings
choose to use the ability before they make the roll or
check, they gain the full +2 bonus; if they choose to do
so afterward, they only gain a +1 bonus. Using adaptive
luck in this way is not an action. This racial trait replaces
half ling luck.

Fleet of Foot: Some half lings are quicker than their kin
but less cautious. Half lings with this racial trait move at
normal speed and have a base speed of 30 feet. This racial
trait replaces slow speed and sure-footed.

Lewis Depp wrote:

Not at all.

The only things I don´t like are:

- Orc-Bloodline
- Ninjas
- Focused Mind Trait

...because all of them seem too powerful to me. But no one of you seems to take them anyway. So I´m fine with everything so far.

Okay, so one post per day. Concerning length, I like it pretty short, but feel free to make a more lengthy post once in a while.

It could happen that I myself would be the exception sometimes, because e.g. making a battlemap can be lots of work.

But then I´ll tell you in the OOC-thread.

Any ideas concerning a standardized form of charactersheet anybody? Would be lots of help for me reading them.

Sorry for the late jump on.

Hi Tim,

I was thinking a Half Elf Ranger/Wizard to be an Arcane Archer. Navigator

If we are short the healer maybe I could be persuaded to be a druid I do so love my druids.

Eager to battle it out on the high seas kill my acquaintances and take all their treasure.

Dustin

Tim, I suggested this one.

http://pathfinderdb.com/character-sheets/static-character-sheets/84-neceros -pfrpg-character-sheet

So no Orc Bloodline, Ninjas, Focused Mind Trait, Gunslingers....

is there anything else the might creep up that's off the table?

Thought of one more thing, thus the edit.

I might play a bard that uses a whip pretty heavy. According to what I read you should be able to use a whip as an attack of opprotunity to trip or disarm. Trip and disarm being in place of a melee attack, and attacks of opprotunity being melee attacks.

All this with the Serpent Lash and Whip Master feets of course.

With out a healer in the party I would play a bard.

...maybe we could call you "Belkar"?

@Lewis:

I know the Necros-sheet. Is it fillable? I had problems saving it, but if it works for you, it is a great sheet.

Character-ideas seem all pretty well designed for a pirate-campaign to me.

Har!

Belkar I like it.

How do you want us to send you are sheet for your evaluation. There does not seem to be an attach file option in pm.

@Tim

Yeah, it is fillable and I haven't had any problems with it yet.

Dustin Kane wrote:

What sort of split do you plan to take Ranger/Wizard then full progression of Arcane Archer, then what?

I send you my mail-adress without commentary by PN. I don´t feel comfortable putting it on a public board. Then just send me your chars via mail. I will upload them on Google Drive.

Afterwards, I´d like everybody to send me an update via mail, if...

*...he goes up a level.
*...he gets a new stat-relevant magic item (normally weapons and everything that occupies a body slot)

Is that okay for everybody?

Threads connected to campaign. :-)

As soon as you make your first post in the gameplay-thread, you will automatically be added to the player/character-lists. (In case you didn´t know already)

Please use character-specific aliases in the gameplay-thread.

isshou wrote:

Alternate Ranger then Wizard every other level till I can be an Arcane Archer (First level at 9). I most likely won't finish the Archer one before the campaign ends

Halfling pirate coming to your inbox soon, Tim.

I hope you all don't mind having a captain under 3 foot tall.

Lewis Depp wrote:

Who said you are going to be captain? Maybe captain's foot stool...

Besides we need to survive starting off as being captured into the crew and many things first before any of us can even hope at gaining captain status.

Character is almost done, just gotta figure out my equipment and everything should be good to go. So how do we send you the character sheets to your mail?

I am the captain because I am obviously the most qualified.

The first char is in Google Drive. As soon as I have them all, I will post the links.

@Lewis: In case you already sent your character, I didn´t receive it.

I just sent it.

I took a look at Valen, Kithrana and Antal. So far, everything looks great.

@Kevin: I wonder if you may have distributed too few skill points? You have an Int of 10, 2 base skill ranks and no favored class bonus used so far. Maybe you want to check this.

As soon as the fourth and final (alliteration, yay!) char has arrived, we can start full speed!

Tim, I believe we have five players:

Lewis (Antal/AwfulGoodPaladin)
Eric (isshou)
Kevin (Kedomi84)
Ross (Ross Hearne/poisonblooded)
Dustin

By the way, you can set your character's alias (aka Antal for me) as your default messageboard alias so you can always post as that character whether that be in-game or on the discussion thread. You can also pick a different avatar pic for each alias, though the selection is limited to what Paizo already has so you cannot upload your own image.

-Lewis

Is setting up the alias something Tim does or that I can do. I ask because so far I cannot.

Edit - more info

Any way the Lucky Sea B@*~* is out to you.

If I wanted further description of things around my character what thread should I post in?

Example the thugs surrounding us with the saps. Let say if I wanted to know if there were male/female orc, human, dwarf...

I am not going to ask these kinds of things every time, just some times.

Ross, I will help you set up an alias on Sunday if you cannot figure it out by then.

@Lewis: Sorry, I guess, I lost the overall view. If it is five, then I need only two more characters.

@Ross: I think, it´s best, to "take a look around" with your character. Example: Glombotsch takes a look around and tries to figure out, what races the pirate-flunkies are and if there are other exits to the room he is in.
If you don´t like that, than you can post it in the OOC-font or directly ask me in the discussion-thread to give you more details

@all: One more house rule, I especially like. Please don´t discuss tactics in combat. Everyone please decides just on his own what to do. If someone establishes a telepathic connection, then you can discuss tactics as much as you want. I consider this rule especially entertaining, because it gives mind-linked characters a spooky kind of "perfect coordination".

Is that okay for everybody?

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1

I think that is an excellent rule.

Now they will never know how I plan to mess this situation up.

Not that they ever knew anyhow.

Kithranna wrote:

It also makes the "mediocre-interesting" telepathy much more helpful.

Alright Tim, I've sent off my character sheet for approval. I'll wait until it's approved before beginning since I went the route of an aquatic character (Undine, amphibious racial ability).

That is as it should be and how we try to play it in our games. To clarify though, if we know a battle is coming and we have some time to plan, our characters can do so, yes?

Assuming we stay in character to do so it might be fun, especially if a few of us have different goals in tactics. We could end up arguing until the battle comes and miss out on a chance to get our tactics down.

I say this as I'm reading up on teamwork feats. If I play the inquisitor I get 6 teamwork feats as part of the class progression and can treat allies as if they had the same feats to see if I benefit from the teamwork feats. So far the conditions I've read in them are fairly easy - they usually rely on being next to an ally, enemy, and/or a specific situation occurs (like an ally feinting successfully)

Yes, I did mean discussing tactics in character.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Well, well!

Here is our final group of young and ambitious pirates:

Antal
Kithranna
Lucky Sea B1tch
Ondir
Valen

One question:

Pirates curse sometimes. Does someone of you feel not okay with an in-character-pirate that curses VERY nasty, e.g. sexual, extremly violent or racistic curses? Do you think doing this in character is okay on the paizo-boards?

Just asking because sometimes I like to do it for flavor, though never out of character of course.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1

I do not believe it will be a problem with anyone here. And I might be classed as the worst one.

It all for fun and games right.

No problem with it here. Though I do not know if Paizo has an issue with it. I will do some checking and post back here.

EDIT: I think most people use the following method on some of the more offensive words...

f.ucking

Here are the relevant rules:

Do not use profanity or vulgar speech;
Do not make bigoted, hateful, or racially insensitive statements;
Do not defame, abuse, stalk, harass, or threaten others;
Do not advocate illegal activities or discuss them with intent to commit them;
Do not post any content that infringes and/or violates any patent, trademark, copyright, or other proprietary right of any third party.

But, I do not know if this applies to in-character gameplay threads.

I would have one request for it, don't curse just because you're a pirate and can curse up a storm, such a usage will just get tired pretty quickly.

Yes of course. It was just because one or two of the NPCs are used to speak quite profane. I guess I will find a good middle ground.

Play it up like it needs to be I say. To me those rules are for the OOC boards. There spirit should be carried out in the IC panels but let's have a sense of adult understanding here.

I agree with Ross these seem to be the boiler plate do not do this. That is on almost every forum.

Could you imagine Bruce Willis saying "Yipee ky yay, bad guy"

Story threads need to have a little artistic (maybe that's a bad word for it) feel.

Dungeon Blaster wrote:

To be clear, I don't mind NPCs that do it often, just not overboard to where it gets hard to parse what they are actually saying between the cursing. I was thinking mainly of PCs, since by definition we're active throughout the story, NPCs are going to come and go.

Ross...

To create a new alias:

-Click 'My Account' at the top of the page.

-Scroll down to the 'Messageboard Aliases" box.

-Click 'Create new messageboard alias'.

-Type your character's name in to the 'Avatar Name' box.

-Click 'Change' beside 'Avatar Image' then select your desired character image.

-Click 'Submit Changes' to save new messageboard alias.

-You can then make that your default alias should you want. Or you can select to post as any alias you have created at the time of post creation by clicking 'Post As'.

Let me know if you have any questions. I think once you've posted we'll be ready to sail full ahead.
