Harlis Underbough |
Pondering the smoke for a moment Harlis decides to see if this evil is active. Pausing to cast a protection from evil blessing from Iomedae he dismounts and fills his aspergillium. Then a further step or two lets him spray the mist with the blessed water, created to be a bane of both undead and creatures hailing from the lower planes.
GM Engleaktig |
If you're casting a spell, then we should roll initiative. "Smokey" will react.
Agnes: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Harlis: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
Agnes: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Harlis notices the smoke begin to cloy around him. He prepares to cast a spell of protection, and Smokey suddenly seems very "angry." It moves as though rearing back to pounce. But, before it can do so...
Hotspur is up first!
This is round 1.
Hotspur the Unsettled |
Hotspur announces that she never inhaled, and then begins a uplifting spokenword performance.
Inspire courage, everyone is +1/+1 on attacks.
Sorry, I've got no idea of how to attack the smoke yet. Shooting it seems a little strange.
GM Engleaktig |
Hotspur announces that she never inhaled
ROFL! :)
Sorry, I've got no idea of how to attack the smoke yet. Shooting it seems a little strange.
Those who have spellcraft trained may attempt a check on their turn.
____________________________________________________________The smoke enters Harlis' square and seems to coalesce a bit.

Reflexively, Harlis holds his breath and avoids taking in any of the smoke.

Ethendril h'Caramore |
"What is this foul smoke?" Ethendril shouts to the others. Though he has no idea what it could be, he steps toward it, swinging mightily with his magical greatsword.
+1 Greatsword (adamantine)(power attack): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 192d6 + 11 ⇒ (4, 4) + 11 = 19
.Wayreth. |
Wayreth hangs back a little to see what effect Ethendril's blade has on the creature, if any.
Delay till after Ethendril.
Was I able to ask that friendly druid to cast greater magic fang on me?
GM Engleaktig |
As the paladin swings his sword through the smoke, he feels like the blade slowed down for the tiniest fraction of a moment. He didn't connect. But, he does get the sense that this thing can be hurt.
Sure, Wayreth. He'll cast it, but you'll need to pay for the spellcasting service. 150 GP

.Wayreth. |
Hmm...that would add up quickly. I'll pass on that and get a wand of magic fang instead.
Wayreth purses his lips as he looks at the smoke, trying to discern some sort of anatomy so that he can find a vulnerable spot to strike.
But I will go ahead and guess it the smoke is immune to sneak attack... And that's assuming the damn thing can even be flanked...
Darting to the opposite side of the smoke from Ethendril, Wayreth attempts a swing at the smoke.
attack roll with piranha strike: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 11 - 2 = 24
(+2 if it can be flanked)
damage roll with piranha strike: 1d6 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
(+2d6 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5 if it can be sneak-attacked)
Harlis Underbough |
Any knowledge to know more?
spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Seeing the smoke swiftly engulf him Harlis decides to instead use a long lasting spell to protect all nearby.
Defensively cast Magic Circle against Evil DC21
Concentration: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
D'oh!
GM Engleaktig |
Harlis: Just knowledge planes. Also, you have a move action remaining, if you wish to take it.
Wayreth: Let's presume that you used a charge of magic fang on yourself before combat started. Cool?
Wayreth's strike seems to have some effect on the smoke. Though his blow was powerful, the smoke seemed to ignore most of it.

Agnes-Emberkin |
I'm really sorry, guys, a contract attorney started early January and though he's not supposed to have any support staff, I'm doing an AWFUL lot of work for him, and by the time I get home I'm terribly exhausted. I'm so sorry for the delays.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (9) + 16 = 25
Know Planes: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14
Agnes will use her flame arc: 3d6 + 2 ⇒ (6, 2, 6) + 2 = 16 into the smoke and see if that does anything. DC 15 reflex for half if it takes fire damage.
GM Engleaktig |
No worries, Agnes. Real life happens. :)
Agnes recognizes that the smoke creature tried to get into Harlis' lungs and solidify itself inside him!
Reflex: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
Agnes seems to be able to "burn away" a bit of the smoke--kind of like the way that sunlight burns off fog.

Provided the smoke has not entered into Harlis, Hotspur takes a shot at it. "I'm a bit of a one trick horse," she apologizes.
point blank ranged touch: 1d20 + 10 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 10 + 1 + 1 = 21
damage: 1d12 + 1 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 1 + 1 = 6
GM Engleaktig |
The bullet does a tiny bit of damage to the smoke-thing.
The smoke recoils a bit. Seeing that this tactic (attempting to solidify itself in one of the party) isn't working, it begins to coalesce into something that resembles a demon--though it is not! (Your previously rolled knowlegde(planes) checks all failed, so you don't know what it is. However, you're experienced enough to recognize that this is an air elemental of some sort. Wayreth is correct: It is immune to crits, immune to precision damage, not subject to flanking, has DR 5/-.)
Swift Action: Coalesce in the square 5-feet above Harlis
Full Attack:
Crit?: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18, not a crit

Wing: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20, Miss

Ethendril h'Caramore |
Ethendril swings in one direction while the smoke moves in another. The older paladin seems to be having a hard time figuring out how to fight it.
Even so, his link with Harlis heals the cleric, while some of the life force ebbs from Ethendril.
+1 Greatsword (adamantine)(power attack): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 92d6 + 11 ⇒ (5, 2) + 11 = 18
Harlis, heal 5 dmg, I take 5.
Harlis Underbough |
Harlis struggles to look up at the creature hovering above him past the top rim of his helm. Judging it has him in a bad place he calls again upon Iomedae for healing and protection holding his shield up and the symbol of the goddess flashes with holy power.
Channel will heal both Ethendril and Harlis now, and +3 AC
channel: 3d3 ⇒ (1, 1, 2) = 4
.Wayreth. |
Had no idea it was an elemental, but smoke generally lacks a discernable anatomy in any case. XD
Wayreth scowls as he flails at the smoke, hoping that his furious motions will serve to somehow dissipate the smoke before it choked his friends (or himself) to death!
attack roll: 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 12 - 2 = 30
damage roll: 1d6 + 6 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 4 + 1 = 17
confirmation roll: 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 12 - 2 = 11 Nope

damage roll: 1d6 + 6 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 4 + 1 = 16
GM Engleaktig |
The paladin, encouraged by the party's success, swings mightily. This time, however, he misses.
Harlis releases a burst of power from Iomedae.
Agnes tries more burninating: Reflex: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14. She scorches the smokey creature real good.
Following up on Agnes' attack Wayreth flurries and lands a couple of solid strikes against the creature.

Round 3 of inspire courage +1/+1
The musket barrel jams!
GM Engleaktig |
The smoke creature, offended by the presence of others in its domain, continues to full-attack Harlis
Bite: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26, Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Wing: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12, Miss!
Wing: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14, Miss!
The elemental is flustered by the presence of so many non-air-elementals that it misses a lot!
__________
Finish him!
Ethendril h'Caramore |
Ethendril can't seem to effectively combat the swirling smoke, turning this way and that but swinging his weapon ineffectively.
+1 Greatsword (adamantine)(power attack)(inspire courage): 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 8 + 1 = 132d6 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (4, 1) + 11 + 1 = 17 /sigh
.Wayreth. |
Surprised that his flailing at the smoke appeared to have some effect, Wayreth decides to keep doing just that.
attack roll: 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 12 - 2 = 27
damage roll: 1d6 + 6 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 4 + 1 = 12

Ethendril h'Caramore |
Ethendril takes a moment to heal his wounds and those around him.
"That was a strange guardian," the paladin observes.
"Does anyone require any additional healing?"
channel: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Off to the next room?
.Wayreth. |
"I'm still not entirely sure if my flailing at the smoke had any real effect, but thank goodness that's over..."
"I'm good to press on."
Harlis Underbough |
Harlis nods his thanks to Ethendril. "I can use a wand for the last of the healing. We should keep moving and try to find the rest of the foes of this place, the druid seemed to indicate there was urgency."
CLW Wand: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
GM Engleaktig |
Treasure in the smoke creature's room: There's a withered and rent body to the northeast. Looks like she was one of the monastery’s clerics. The priest’s robes are rotten, but a pouch at her side still contains a scroll of cure critical wounds, a scroll of flame strike, a scroll of protection from energy, and a scroll of summon monster V.
____________________________________________________________
Next room: This space apparently served as the monastery’s kitchen. It appears to have been used recently, though the strange stains and smells don’t seem like they were created by preparing food. A cauldron of bubbling fluid sits atop a small fire burning in one of the fireplaces.
Craft alchemy to know more.
Ethendril h'Caramore |
Ethendril says "Harlis...do you want to take the scrolls you can use, then give the rest to Agnes?"
The paladin looks around at the recently-used kitchen.
"I can make nothing of what they are preparing here, but with a fire burning still...someone is close."
Harlis Underbough |
Harlis nods and says "This scroll offers many forms of powerful aid. Let's hope to find a better use than its previous owner."
if we are playing PFS style then Agnes can use a few of the spells, otherwise it would be a cleric scroll from the looks. Harlis doesn't have Alchemy but he does have a wand of resist energy fully charged.
Hotspur the Unsettled |
"I'm a bit of an alchemist. Have we found any dragon scales?"
Ethendril h'Caramore |
"I guess we should keep going, then," Ethendril responds to the plot fairy.
"Pray tell, good fairy, which direction would be the best to resolve the plot in a heroic fashion?"
GM Engleaktig |
Yep. You're heading up towards the belfry now.
You pass through another library. (F23) Tall bookcases fill this impressive chamber. The elaborate fresco on the ceiling depicts devotees of Irori in meditation. Wisps of incense wind through the scene like a fanciful ribbon of smoke.
The party searches carefully and finds a secret door. (F24) The iron door to this chamber is covered in complex sigils and runes painted in delicate black lacquer—a message repeated over and over in several languages, including Common: “Beware! Dark Oblivion Lies Within!”
Ethendril h'Caramore |
Ethendril takes a moment to prepare himself before they enter the secret door, casting both protection from evil and divine favor.
"We should proceed cautiously...if anyone has any further preparations to make, do so now."
Once the others have prepared themselves and Wayreth checks the doors for traps, the paladin pushes the door open quietly.
GM Engleaktig |
A drone, like the sound of a vast wind, fills this room, yet the air is cold and still. A fifteen-foot square of arcane symbols is inscribed on the floor. Two five-foot-square areas of similar writing sit to the northeast and southeast of the larger one.
Above the larger square hovers what appears to be a vertical hole in reality—a window that looks out into a night sky in which only a few tiny stars are visible. The window itself is fifteen feet square, running from the north and south points of the symbol below. It’s suspended a foot off the ground, and comes within three feet of the ceiling above.
The two smaller squares of arcane symbols on the ground radiate strong transmutation magic.
It kind of looks like there is a tree on the other side of the window in reality.
