Zimu, you like reading history books.

Zimu:

Branderscar Prison was once the citadel of the Dukes of Branderscar. There was a castle and a village on the mainland, connected by a 150' causeway to the island offshore. A smaller fortress was built on the island. The position was impregnable; you remember reading that "the rough water around the rock gave protection, being too deep for men or horses even at lowest tide".

However, the Dukes of Branderscar chose the wrong side during the Unification Wars. The last Duke died childless in battle. The castle on the mainland was torn down; all that remains, if you recall correctly, is a small guardhouse at the end of the causeway. The village melted away, its ruins gradually disappearing under the rising water of Toadmarsh. The citadel was converted into Branderscar Prison... from which no one has ever escaped.

Jax doesn't take much intimidating, he doesn't want to end up brutally beaten.

"Why, my good man! I'm alarmed you would think one such as I would try to sweet talk such an honorable prison guard. The thought never crossed my mind. Now, as for those investments, you're right, I have kept fairly careful track of them. Unfortunately, most aren't easily ah...handled, if you would understand. I prefer the beauty of art over the jingle of coin. There is a warehouse near the wharf owned by one Mr Arcady Zanzin. Now, I may, or may not, have made his acquaintance in the past and may or may not know of a hidden chamber within the warehouse filled with some of my ah..past acquisitions. Do you know of the art museum owned by that one noble down south? The big one with all of the famous paintings? Well..it is highly probably that the Fabrezio Alruso in the museum is not of authentic quality, if you get my meaning. That painting may or may not be located in this hypothetical chamber. Now, if its no longer in the warehouse then only I can help you track down where Zanzin has moved it. I would of course be willing to help you for a bit of help in escaping the salt mines. It is not like you are helping a murderer get loose, right?"

Arcady Zanzin isn't a real person, just an alias of Jax's. I'm assuming the security at any noble's museum would be high so I'll leave it up to you whether Jax is actually lying about having that painting or not!

The guards draw back from Sir Edmin, alarmed and unnerved; his voice has the sharp note of command. It is the voice of a man used to being obeyed. However, Blackerly is made of sterner stuff.

"No ladies here, Sir. And no fine gentlemen either. Just criminal scum, waiting to get the punishment they so rightfully deserve. Don't try putting on any airs, my fine lordling. Make trouble for me, and they'll have to carry you to the chopping block."

He goes out and shuts the door behind him.

Perhaps half an hour after being taken from the cell. Jax is brought back in. He has clearly suffered a beating -- he's bruised, his nose is bleeding, one eye is almost swollen shut.

There is some kind of anti-magic field in operation. It will resist or impede your ability to use magic.

Now that you're paying attention, you can actually feel it -- like a very faint buzzing or whining sensation, perceived more in your bones than in your ears.

Yes, because we'll be oh so effective against a group of armed and armored guards.

Jax smiles at the goblin. Your attempts to slip free don't seem so to be working and bribery didn't really work on my end so..maybe brute force is what we'll be forced to do. Several hours have passed since Zimu's arrival and Jax's beating. Then:

You hear distant footsteps and the grind of metal on stone. They gradually draw nearer and then the gate is unlocked and swung wide. Once again, there are guards -- six of them this time -- led by Blackerly.

"The big one at the back, there. Sir whatever-he-is. Step careful, now, he's a troublemaker." The guards unlock Sir Edmin and bring him forward, being careful to stay well out of reach of the squirming goblin. "Well, Sir Murdering Scum, it seems you have a visitor. How you ever warranted such a fine lady is beyond me. Seems she wants to say good-bye. Now step lively. We wouldn’t want to keep her waiting."

Well ho dang! A natural 20!

There is a weak link in one of your arm-chains! You can see it, and you're fairly sure you can snap it. Of course, this will still leave you chained by the legs (a separate chain).

You may want to take advantage of this. First, though, you're being taken to your interview with the mysterious fine lady...

To be clear: each of you has two arm-chains and a leg-chain. Each arm chain has a lock. The leg chain connects you all and has a single lock, fastened to an iron staple in the stone floor. There's also a lock on the door, of course. So, to break any one of you completely free would require three broken chains or picked locks -- arm, other arm, and leg chain. To break ALL of you free would require thirteen (6 x 2, plus floor chain), and then you'd still be facing the locked door. There are reasons no one has ever escaped from Branderscar!

Good day, chaps, good to see you all again so soon. A visitor for the big one, hm? Aw, I suppose none of my admirers have deigned step into this dank tower. Any chance we could get a round of wine with the next meal? Water just doesn't suit my palate. And Mr. Blakely, your earlier beating has quite convinced me of the error of my ways. Sir Edmin:
Sir Edmin, you are led through a corridor where you see four or five more cells adjoining it. Most have their doors open; one other door besides your own is shut.

You are led through a square guardroom with a large fireplace and manhandled into a windowless room that if furnished with only a table and four chairs. You are forced into a chair and your gaze alights on the other person present. Sitting opposite you is a hauntingly beautiful woman in an elegant black dress and soft silken veil. She looks as if she is headed to a funeral. Her hair is so platinum as to almost be white and her eyes are a vibrant, almost unearthly green. She clearly has been weeping.

"Oh, Dearest!" proclaims the unfamiliar woman. "I’m so relieved you’re alive!" She quickly turns to Sergeant Blackerly. "Could we please have a moment alone, good sir? For pity’s sake?"

Blackerly goes blank for a bit and then quickly agrees. "Of course, my lady. For you,’ tis no problem." He steps outside and shuts the door, leaving the two of you alone together.

You have never seen this woman before in your life.

The Mysterious Fine Lady

Bref, without some sort of tool -- anything; a rusty nail, a bit of wire -- you can't attempt to pick these locks.

Jax:
The guards have some concept of key security. The keys are carefully organized, with the keys to each set of manacles on an individual ring. So, when a guard enters the cell, he ONLY carries the key ring for one particular set of manacles. That way, even if the prisoners somehow overpower him, they won't get keys for more than one person's chains.

He must have friends in high places. High enough to get us out, do you think? That or something more sinister is going on. Ooh, conspiracies, I love 'em. Gives me a tingle in my tail.

Sir Edmin:
"There are two reasons to think escape may be possible... for a group that is clever and strong." Tiadora takes off her veil and uses it to dab away her tears. Then, she raises two elegant fingers. "First, Branderscar Prison is going through, shall we say, a difficult patch. This weak, stupid kingdom does not give a high priority to the torture and death of those such as yourselves. So the Warden is an academic fool who is more interested in magic than in discipline, and the leadership of the guards has become lazy and corrupted." She smiles at you. He teeth are perfect, small and white and very even. "They've even let the anti-magic ward run down. It requires some rather expensive components to maintain, and that money has found its way elsewhere... Oh, it still works, Dearest. But it's weaker than it should be, and only covers this single building instead of the entire prison. Some of your cellmates may be able to take advantage of that.

Bref, you can't reach the manacles with your teeth; remember, you're dangling on tiptoe, arms above your head, feet just barely touching the ground. Nice idea, though.

Sir Edmin:
Tiadora smiles mockingly. "Oh, Dearest! Such passion! I can see that you long to fly away to me!"

She raises her hand, holding the crumpled veil. "If you do manage to get out, cross the moors. On the old Moor Road you’ll see a
manor house with a single lantern burning in the second story. There our mutual friend waits. Which brings me to the second reason escape may be possible. Our friend did want me to give you this."
Tiadora passes her hand over her mouth, as if wiping away a few last tears. The veil disappears.

Suddenly, she lunges forward, quick as a striking snake. Before you can react, she throws her arms around you and kisses you. Her tongue is small and sharp; it thrusts between your lips, pushing the crumpled veil from her mouth into yours. Just as quickly, she releases you.

Immediately, her demeanor once more changes and she is again a perfect picture of grief. "Oh, no, no... it's too terrible... I can't bear it!" The door opens and Blackerly steps in again. He shakes his head. "I’m afraid it’s time, miss."

She looks deep in his eyes and says, "Thank you for letting me say good-bye. There’s no need to search my dearest. You are such a good friend for letting me see my dearest one more time."

"Such a good friend," Blackerly repeats, his voice almost mechanical. Then the watch sergeant seems to snap out of it. He bows politely. A pleasure, madam." She leaves unveiled. Her eyes meet yours last time and she briefly gives you a smile. It is a wicked smile: there is malice in it, and mockery.

"Three days." Suddenly you hear her voice, clearly -- but her lips are not moving; indeed, she is turning away, leaving the room, sobbing as she stumbles down the hall. Yet her voice comes quite clearly into your mind. "Don’t disappoint me, dearest."

You find yourself slowly rubbing the back of your hand across your lips, as though you had just put your mouth on a toad or a scorpion.

You hold the crumpled veil carefully behind your teeth. Blackerly and the guards are coming to escort you back to your cell.

Edmin stands, with the ladies final act the fires of his rage and frustration has died down and been replaced with the hot embers of hatred. He stares at the guards as the come to take him away and says nothing until returned to his cell.

Sir Edmin is returned to the cell. He does not seem to have been beaten. He says nothing as the guards put him back in his chains.

The guards depart, closing the door behind them.

Edmin raises his head and looks towards the door as he shakes his head and begins coughing into his hands before seeming to rub his legs.

Assuming the guards are gone.

The cavalier spits the veil into his hand and flattens it out on his leg as he glances at the others then looks down at the lady's gift.

The teifling smirks and replies dryly to Bref. Apparently I need to work on my charm, looks like they didn't even give him a love tap. What'd your ladyfriend say?
