Description wrote:
It's a beautiful sunny afternoon and you are walking down a winding mud road in the heart of The Empty Forest. The road varies from about 10-15 feet wide allowing 2 medium sized characters and their mounts walk side-by-side with ease. Firewood from fallen branches and dead logs is plentiful and creating a campfire along the side of the road can be done without any serious hazard. The road is continually winding and at any point in time you can only see 3d4X10 feet ahead of you. The canopy from the trees is as thick as the rest of The Empty Forest and blocks all direct sunlight except for the occasional sunbeam that creeps through the treetops. The trees on either side grow thick and close together. They reduce visibility to poor conditions and movement to 1/4 normal. The dirt surface of the road is in poor shape, with deep ruts from generations of farm carts. Walking isn't an issue but trying to move any faster requires a DC:10 Acrobatics check to avoid stumbling and falling. In addition, enough branches and brambles stick out above the path overhead to make riding uncomfortable and maybe even a bit dangerous. Add +2 to the DC of any ride checks made while on the road. Despite the poor road conditions however, the forest is a beautiful, tranquil place. Wild flowers grow everywhere leaving a beautiful array of color wherever you look. The temperature is mild and comfortable on this beautiful sunny day.

If you are able to, you may roll a Knowledge Nature check to kick off the adventure.

Savage Shaman AC15

Where the sun beats down directly on her pale northern skin, dappling it with golden beams, she feels the warmth grow. Loosening her thick fur coat, to reveal glimpses of lush flesh enhanced by her silk dress. Though she had been a few years from her native country, the mild conditions are still a nice change for her.

Suppressing a cheeky smile she looks across to Rob; "Hope you no think of way-lay people in bushes." the warrior teases knowing his proclivities. However her eyes tell a slightly different story, darting around the dense undergrowth - a perfect spot for an ambush.

'Civilised lands? Pfft. You'd have thought it'd be in better condition, this route has been used for years and it's overgrown. I wonder what we'll find at Ossington, that'd imply it's this poorly cared for.'

Mariannes' rangy gait shows off her well-muscled form, from her youth travelling across the cool tundra. Her height lends her the leverage and reach to maximise her strength whilst not reducing her feminine features the way of her fellow tribeswomen. No-one would think her a scrawny youth or butch Linnorm warrior. Flicking her pale hair from her face she continues through the woods.

Know (Nature): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

Savage Shaman AC15

From out of her furred hood bobs a little speckled bird, it's head bobbing around.

"Oi, stop being so nasty to Rob. You're just jealous 'cause his hair doesn't get all messy when he gets angry." the bird chirrups, the tone somehow holds an avian mocking. "And another thing, you'd best get me some seed when we get to town. The worms around here aren't plump enough."

Male Human (Andoran) Cleric 5 (Qi Zhong), Monk 2; Init +2; Perception +10

The tall man in plain brown robes sits placidly astride his long-eared mount, feet nearly dragging the ground. From time to time, he dismounts to pick up a particularly well-seasoned piece of firewood and add it to the bundle behind his mount's saddle. The patient animal stands like a table as he does, flicking its ears to catch the woodland noises.

"I don't think there are any people around, Mari," he remarks to the tall northerner, "Nobody from the village has been seen in town for a long time. There may be trouble ahead. But for now, we have a lovely day and a pleasant ride in good company. And if anyone thirsts, we still have some ale left. I can think of worse ways to spend a day." He flashes a white smile at the lady then looks around the quiet woods, brown eyes calm and pleasant.

Savage Shaman AC15

"Strange, a village cut off from it's parent town? Road is very rough." she replies in her rough accent, that belies her astute mind. However at the offer of a drink, she unstraps a drinking horn from her back pack. Never one to refuse a drink, she passes over the pale cattle horn to the holy man.

"We can solve trouble, if the forest spirits is angry. Especially since we have a troubadour." she makes a joke(?)

Male Human (Andoran) Cleric 5 (Qi Zhong), Monk 2; Init +2; Perception +10

Mari's horn in one hand, Tuck reaches behind him with the other and deftly grasps the little ale cask, uncorking it and tucking it under his arm to keep it steady. He carefully fills the odd container as he rides, then reverses the process with practiced ease.

Returning the silver-chased horn to its owner with a warm smile, he ponders her words. "I don't think we need forest spirits to explain ominous events. People do plenty of ill on their own, until they're made to see the light." Five-spoked wheel tattoos slide across the backs of his large hands as he flexes them and makes hammer-like fists, more of a promise than a threat.

Male Human Knife Master/7

An exaggerated sigh comes from the young dark haired man from where he sits upon his small red appaloosa as they lope along. "How long we been ridin? Don' gimme wrong sun's nice an' al, but we been on this road for hours." They'd probably heard similar complaints from Billy his attention span wasn't really the best, and despite that he actually likes riding and his little horse it wasn't terribly exciting.

He lurches to the side as his horse steps in a divot "Whoa, cripes! You saiddit lady... 'm not even sure this thing qualifies 's a road." Although he may not seem like it the young lad's quite alert his eyes scanning carefully for anything out of the ordinary especially any sign of possible ambush. However his attention to detail regarding anything not out of the ordinary is a bit lacking, the trees are all starting to look alike.

Seeing the horn being passed around his green eyes light up. "Hey Mari toss that over here. Y'know I can't resist a chance to get a taste of your horn."

Savage Shaman AC15

"I'll bet..." comes a tweet from the little bird in her fur hood.

Gratefully receiving the horn in her maimed hand, she takes a long pull of the potent draft. With a nod of gratitude to the holy man at the generous brew and of agreement with his theological stance.

She then turns to the dark haired youth and moves across the overgrown track, her chunky leather boots lending a natural grace amongst the dense undergrowth.

"I look like a beer wench? Maybe you should get off your ass... she glances at Billy's saddle; ...sorry, horse." she adds jovially handing across the container.

Male Human (Andoran) Cleric 5 (Qi Zhong), Monk 2; Init +2; Perception +10

"Our fearless leader is mighty quiet today." Tuck scrutinizes Rob closely, wondering if the unaccustomed silence is due to wariness or distraction.

Savage Shaman AC15

"Probably observing natures beauty." Marianne says of handedly, whilst making her way through the rough undergrowth.

"Who's idea to travel here anyway?" she says basking in the luminescence of the afternoon. "Wonder if we arrive before night falls."

Marianne's Knowledge Nature Results:
You notice that there is a distinct lac of wildlife in the area. There are bugs and butterflies and beautiful flowers but no animals. It is quiet and strange without them. The only sounds you hear aside from your companions is the light breeze blowing through the branches overhead and the trotting of your mounts on the dirt. A forest is supposed to be full of animals, but here there are quite literally none?

Billy's Perception Results:
You do notice something out of the ordinary. From the road ahead there is a whimper, or is it a scream? If it weren't for your excellent hearing you wouldn't be able to also tell that there is a distinct sound of footsteps, and they're moving quickly toward you, possibly at a running pace. The steps are smaller and lighter than a full grown human, whatever it is must be smaller than you. The individual is panting heavily.

What is the party's marching order?

Savage Shaman AC15

"Quiet, much too quiet." Marianne looks to the trees, surprised at the peaceful forest. She moves over to one of the fallen trees and runs her hand over it's rough bark. 'Should be very fertile and wild, since it's left to seed? Especially with this fine weather and lack of human influence.' she assesses with her shamanistic knowledge.

Not sure the order - Marianne doesn't mind being near the front, although she's the least perceptive in the group.

Male Human (Andoran) Cleric 5 (Qi Zhong), Monk 2; Init +2; Perception +10

Cleric would probably be near the middle, the better to buff or heal you, my dear. We have what, five? Put Tuck #3.

"Too quiet?" Alan asks, raising an eyebrow. "If you want me to sing a tune to liven things up, there is little else you must do but ask, love." Despite his half-serious offer, the bard's lute is not moved from its place on his back, nor is there any singing to be heard. Truth be told, not a single lyric has left his lips since the lot of them first entered the dreary forest. The road to Ossington was hardly a lively jaunt - whether this was caused by or was because of the lack of music remained to be seen.

Alan will be fine at the back, I think. Rear guard melee and within buffing range.

Savage Shaman AC15

"Ain't seen any animals around here. Ain't too natural that..." She says looking around the forest suspiciously; "Though a tune would be appreciated, might not be wise."

'Wise...wise...? What you know about wise? Other than it's what you look out of.' the little bird chirps, though it might be annoying Marianne actually takes it as a compliment.

Grand Lodge

Male Human Knife Master/7

Billy considers then shakes his head "Nah, I think a beer wench'd be less scary. I tend ta prefer my beer wenches to be less likely ta pick me up and snap me in half."

He grins towards Marianne as he accepts the ale horn "An I thought I told ya ta quit checkin out my... meaningful pause "Horse."

He takes a drink from the horn then pauses catching a slight whisper that could have been a footstep, and listening more closely. Deciding those are indeed footsteps and that they're heading right towards the gang he holds up a hand making a signal to the others so they'll get on their guard. He leans over to warn them quietly "Hear somethin comin runnin pretty hard towards us smaller 'n me but can't tell how many, be ready but don't give away that we know they're comin"

Billy would be close to the front to so he can do scouting and get in the melee and all maybe #2 or next to Mari if we're going side by side

Male Human (Andoran) Cleric 5 (Qi Zhong), Monk 2; Init +2; Perception +10

"If it's just one, it's more liable to be in trouble than to be trouble. Could be a decoy or bait, though. If somebody's trying that on us, they're teaching grandmother to suck eggs." Tuck remains calmly on donkey-back, flexing his fingers and cracking the knuckles.

From around a bend in the road 120 feet ahead of you, a panicked Halfling man runs as fast as he can. He is dressed in simple peasant garb (brown and homespun). The poor condition of the road almost causes him to fall as he turns the corner, but he manages to find his footing and keep running. As soon as he sees you the panicked man shouts between tired breaths:

"Please, Help, He's going to kill me!"

Once he's finished crying out to you, the person that he is running from emerges from around the corner. It is a heavily armored knight riding on the back of a great stallion. In his hand he wields a Lance but he also carries a Longsord at his hip. His Plate armor is outfitted with armor spikes and his horse is also wearing matching armor. Both the Knight and his mount are translucent (you can see right through them) and turn the corner without missing a beat, as if the condition of the road did not hinder them at all. The branches that hang low over the trail seamlessly pass right through the strange Knight rather than bounce off of him.

The Knight carefully aims his Lance at the Halfling man and orders his horse into a full charge.

The current marching order is Marianne & Billy in the front, Tuck & Rob in the middle and Alan in the rear.

Savage Shaman AC15

Mariannes' low chuckle at Billys comparison dies in her mouth at his warning. "Aye, I think we'd best...." she tries to keep the idle conversation going just as the halfling burst around the bend.

"By the cursed Spirits!" she shouts as the horseman comes barrelling forward. Keeping her body low she bursts into a sprint towards the horseman.
"Come to me spirits of the wild forest, come help me destroy this interloper from beyond the grave."

Savage Shaman AC15

Do we need initiative rolls? As well as the Acrobatics checks for movement greater than normal. It's only either side of the 10' road that reduce movement to 1/4?

The fur coat flicks open with the sudden movement, as the wind catches it. Her thighs wrapped in honey-leather start pounding forward eating the yards towards her target. Keeping her head down, blond hair whipping around from the diadem that entraps it.

'Maybe I should have called to the spirits to provide me with armour rather than speed, but never mind... must stop the foul creature from harming the halfling. she thinks.

"'Lo, little one! We will save you from this dastardly phantasm!" Alan calls to the halfling in the most valiant, dramatic voice he could muster. He was almost certain that their gracious leader would approve! Drawing his magical rapier, Riddlethorn, he points it at the halfling's assailant. "Go, my love! Banish this interloper!"

If the combat's started/ing, Alan will start inspire courage.

Male Human (Andoran) Cleric 5 (Qi Zhong), Monk 2; Init +2; Perception +10

Tucker unleashes a great guffaw. "RUN, LITTLE MAN, RUN, 'AFORE THE TRANSPARENT KNIGHT GETS YA!" he shouts, kicking the mule to make it amble forward at its best speed. Grinning, he focuses his mind on the meaning behind the tattoos on his hands and pounds his fists together, hoping the phantasm is something from beyond the grave.

Advance 40'(pony walk speed) and prepare to channel positive energy to harm undead if the spectral knight comes within 30'.

If you choose to enter combat than yes, an initiative roll is required.

Mad Marianne Continued wrote:

Correct. If you're moving at greater than normal speed (Running, Charging, etc...) while on the road, a DC:10 Acrobatics check is required. 5 foot steps are still allowed since you can move normally on the dirt road at your base land speed. If for any reason you step off the road and into the dense bush, movement is reduced to 1/4 normal.

Mad Marianne Continued wrote:

How much are you moving? The Halfling is 120 feet away and the Knight is 20 feet further.

If you're entering combat I'll post a map once Initiative is sorted out.

Savage Shaman AC15

Apologies for this but... it seems like the Halfling is in dire trouble! So I might just charge/double move, after using the 1/day ability of Marianne's blouse to use a swift action for an extra move. Thus she can get 120 feet in a full round action.

Now her Acrobatic's is +15, so she 'possibly' doesn't need to roll. Added to this could she use the charge-attack to interpose herself between the halfling and the spirit-knight?

Mad Marianne wrote:

I'd still like a roll for the Acrobatics check please. A Natural 1 is still a fail in my games, even on skill checks. It is entirely possible to attack the Knight assuming you have the movement for it, but don't forget he is still currently 20 feet further than the Halfling putting him at 140 feet away from you.

Initiative: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

Going with my action as described above.

The halfling was about what Billy had expected judging from the sound of the footsteps. The ghostly pursuer on the other hand was not, it's not every day you see a transparent jouster charging a pint-sized humanoid.

Trying to take the strange sight in stride the young rogue adjusts his cloak, and hops down off his horse then addresses the spectral knight. "Good sir knight. Surely whatever our little friend has done isn't worth his life. Why don't we sit and talk about it? We can share a horn of ale." He offer's Marianne's horn which he had apparently stashed somewhere in his loose fitting clothing.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24

Savage Shaman AC15

Surging forward up the road, the heavy bladed axe slips into her hand and with enhanced swiftness ends up looming over the halfling. "Listen to man with horn." Mari growls.

Swift: Use Quick Runners Shirt to move 40'
Athletics: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (2) + 15 = 17
Charge: Double move 80' more to interpose Mari's body between the Halfling & the horseman - Bull-rushing the halfling prone if needed???
Athletics 2: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31
Athletics 3: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (13) + 15 = 28

Just rolling The Knight's Initiative now. Depending on who goes first will change aspects of the battle.

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

Ok Marianne, because you act before the knight everything in your post looks like it will work out. With Acrobatics checks like that you could probably just jump overtop the Halfling rather than Bullrush.

I really dont want to begin combat without Pinvendor. I'm hoping he shows up soon. I'll give him 48 hours until I proceed without him. I hope it doesn't come to that though

Current Initiative:
Marianne (18)
Knight (11)
Alan (7)
Tuck (3)

Still need Initiative from Billy

I'll try to get a map ready later tonight.

Robinet de L'Xley remains quiet even as he overhears Tuck's inquiry as to his silence. Robinet knows that if Tuck needed his counsel Tuck would speak to him directly rather than refer to him in third person. For now, the silence that concerned him came from everywhere else. The others all seemed to have different reasons for being curious about the town they approached, but it was the woods that concerned him. He brushed a lock of his chestnut hair from his eyes as he scanned the trees. His stallion Sherwood snorted and eyed the ground carefully as it picked its way across the pocked surface.

Towns had gone quiet before. Unfortunate calamities, bandits, cult isolationism... Robinet recalled the lessons from the tutor his family had provided a young boy much more eager to be outside with his dog and toy bow. However, nothing came to mind of an event that would also silence the woods and natural world that surrounded such a place. At least, nothing that was not extremely alarming.

Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18 (+12 if knowledge of animals applies)

Lost in thought, Robinet doesn't hear the escaping halfling until the small humanoid comes into view. As everyone moves into offensive positions, Robinet quickly swings his bow from its place attached to Sherwood's saddle and and draws an arrow from the quiver hung on the saddle's opposite side. First he studies the ghostly knight and then regards the halfling. The sight of the specter certainly brings concerns...mayhap the answer to the forest's riddle already presents itself.

What is the Knowledge check for understanding an enemy?

Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13

Robinet motions for his followers to remove themselves from the line of the knights charge with a few flicks of the arrow he has yet to nock. Robinet calls out to the knight hoping to be heard above any other noise. I'm not sure if ghostly warhorse is able to make sound as it charges?

"Ho! I see before me another who has sworn vows for lord and land. Know that my own prevent me from allowing harm to the helpless with no due cause. State your purpose or expect my arrow to defy your aggressive advance!"

Cohort post will be forthcoming. Probably after work, but his initiative is on mine (I'm assuming unless you would prefer he has his own), and I think I may have him be absent from this scene anyway.

Here is a Map of what everything looked like before actions were declared.

Robinet: It is a possibility that the horse wouldn't be able to make any sounds but in this case its just to set the mood. I had forgot to mention it earlier but you'd notice that the Horse the Knight is riding is actually hovering slightly off the ground.

Halfling Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

Current Initiative:
Marianne (18)
Robinet (13.5)
Billy (13)
Knight (11)
Halfling (9)
Alan (7)
Tuck (3)

  • Marianne charges forward and places herself directly between the Knight and The Halfling.

  • Robinet takes a brief moment to study the halfling and The Knight:

Knowledge Religion for the Knight and Knowledge Local for the Halfling. Roll your checks and I'll post the results later.

  • Billy attempts to reason with The Knight but his words are wasted as The Knight is either not listening or does not care whatsoever.

  • The Knight charges at the Halfling, his lance aimed steady and true at The Halflings back. However as soon as Marianne steps in between The Knight and his target, The Knight pulls hard on the Horse's reigns and comes to a halt. The horse rears up violently, swinging and kicking its front hooves in the air. The Knight wrestles the horse back down and effortlessly stays in his saddle. With his horse now sideways on the trail, The Knight lifts his heavy lance up and rests it in his shoulder. The Knight stares at Marianne and waits for her next move.

  • The Halfling keeps running as fast as he can and does not look back.
    Acrobatics Check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
He does not get very far. The Halfling's foot gets caught in a deep rut within the road and he falls hard, face first into a mud puddle.

  • Alan inspires courage.

  • Tuck advances 40' down the trail.

Current Map!

Everybody may post actions.

Savage Shaman AC15

Her heavy blade in hand it flickers with a soft flame, her hair starts to shimmer and flicker as an unnatural wind blows from beneath. A low rumble of her voice and the fire roils down the blade to seemingly clinging to her clothes. Wreathed in flames that form a mystic armour, she looks up at the figure with a similar fire in her eyes.

"Why you attack the halfing? What he done to you?" she adds to Billy & Robinet's words, readying herself for battle if he chooses to attack her.

Standard: Cast Mage Armour

Robinet urges his mount forward with his knees until he is about 15 feet from where the halfling lies in the mud. Robinet looks at the humanoid with a raised eyebrow and then gives the ghostly knight his full attention. Robinet casually places his arrow to the bow but does not draw back.

"Thank you for stopping to consider our words. Now then, what is all this about?"

Knowledge (local): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

No Kn(Rel) I'm afraid.

"Oh?" Alan exclaims, raising an eyebrow. Slowly (but certainly not entirely), he lowers the tip of his rapier. "Ser Robinet parleys with the spirit?"

"Rudy, you stay here, ya hear?" Billy was talking to his horse, and pointed to the ground where the large animal stood. "I don't wanna havta go chase ya down again." Trusting that the appaloosa would stay put he turned and started towards the halfling and ghostly knight.

"I'm not so sure chief. He din even seem ta notice me talkin ta him, an only stopped when Mari got in 'is way. I don't think it wuz just me either... not this time anyway, I wuz bein nice. Not even sure 'e can understand us. He did stop though rather then jus tramplin the lil lady, so maybe he doesn' really wanna hurt us. Course I woodn't wanna mess wit us either."

As the young man approaches he turns his attention towards the halfling "Well if this see-through soldier don't seem inclined ta talk ta us we might be at a bit of a standoff" He eyes the specter ready to react if he makes any hostile actions.

Double move towards the halfling to H27 as he talks

The Knight stares for a long moment. His expression clearly shows that he is disappointed that he never got the chance at his quarry, but glances around and chooses not to engage the Halflings saviors. With a harsh flick of his horses reigns, The Knight begins a trot back down the path from which he came and does not look back.

Savage Shaman AC15

Turning her back on the retreating spirit rider, the flaming axe-head swings down to hit the loam of the roadside ditch. However the flames still cling to her beneath the thick fur-coat, with her free hand Mari flicks her wild hair. "That good fight spoiled!" she says with an accusing joviality to Billy & Robinet.

With a glance to the fallen halfling, she addresses the others a touch out of breath after the sudden sprint. "One of you help wee fellow up. He look like he had fright."

Robinet frowns at the retreating knight's form. As the spectral man and horse seemed unlikely to provide any further information given its pattern of completely ignoring their entreaties, Robinet figured it would be better to let them depart as it was too early to determine what effect dispersing such a spirit would have on the situation just yet. It may not have even accomplished anything as sometimes such spirits simply reformed.

Replacing his bow and arrow, Robinet swings down from Sherwood's back and approaches the muddy-faced halfling.

Robinet extends his hand to the small humanoid and says, "Ho, friend. Mayhap you would be willing to help illuminate the situation for this band of merry travelers."

His storm grey orbs look over the halfling critically.

Don't forget my Knowledge (Local) roll. It was a 20!

The Knight carries on down the trail and quickly disappears from sight. The Halfling stares in amazement as The Knight just walks away. He is less panicked now that the threat has gone.

"He found us. We thought we might be able to outrun him but he caught up." The Halfling breaks down. He places his face into the palm of both hands and begins to cry. "Harard and Misha never made it. I watched him cut them down and then I ran. They're right around the corner."

Upon closer inspection, the Halfling is obviously malnourished but otherwise in fine condition.

Robinet Knowledge Local Result:
The creature is a Halfling. Optimistic creatures that are cheerful by nature. Halflings usually grow to be about 3 feet tall. They are a common race that usually reach a mature age within 20 years of their life. Some distinguishing traits other than their short stature are pointy ears, cinnamon colored skin, dark hair and the fact that they prefer to walk barefoot.

Savage Shaman AC15

Reaching into her knapsack she deftly breaks off a hunk of cheese the size of a small apple and hands it to the halfling. "Here, eat. You'll feel better. You from the village? Ossington." she asks in her gruff but kindly accent.

From the soft furred hood comes a muffled chirp; "Oi, hot stuff. Turn down the flames." the little song-bird calls as it jumps out, seemingly unsinged by the flickering armour.

"Don't fret too much pal, 'm sure there'll be another, if we's got talent for anythin it's findin a fight." The black haired youth smirks towards Marianne "Though if yer so disappointed we could hava tussle later... that is if yer up ta it, I'm a lil worried seein as yer too winded ta help the lil tyke outta the mud just after a little run." He knows very well that the woman can handle a lot more than a hundred yard dash, and if they did tussle she more than likely would be able to take him, in a fair fight at least, but he had to tease her about it anyway.

Billy starts out towards the halfling to help him up, but sees Robinet already doing so, and instead approaches to listen. "Round the corner ya say?" He turns and motions the monk "Tuck my man, there's injured people just around the corner, maybe still a chance to save them! Let's go"

"Rudy get your speckled behind over here!" The youngster calls to his horse hoping he'll actually listen to him this time.

Savage Shaman AC15

"Ha, I can handle you Billy." she replies quickly. "Without getting me out of breath." Though she nods in agreement with the assessment of potentially helping the pair that were taken out & an instantaneous reaction to help them.

Male Human (Andoran) Cleric 5 (Qi Zhong), Monk 2; Init +2; Perception +10

The mule picks its way to the halfling, but upon hearing Billy's words, Tuck keeps it moving down the path at non-trip speed. "Not very knightly, ambushing small folk," he scowls.

The halfling grabs at the bread from Mariannes hand and devours it hungrily.

Yes, I'm from Ossington. Times have been dismal since The Knight appeared. We're a farming community, but we haven't been able to tend the crops in months for fear of being slaughtered. Our Mayor charged some of us to brave the road and purchase food from the neighboring village to bring back to our starving people. We have failed. We're not equipped to combat The Knight. He's going to bet the death of us all!"

Just around the bend ahead lies a cart, still attached to a lone Mule who is grazing the tall grass on the side of the path. In the drivers seat of the cart is the slumped over corpse of a Human man in his 30's. He carries no treasure, message or weapon. His cloths are typical for a farmer or outdoor laborer and his hands are calloused from hard work. One of his pockets is filled with acorns which he had been munching on through his travels. Some 20 feet further up the road is the corpse of a beautiful young Human woman. She is dressed in the same simple garb that both The Halfling and The Driver are dressed in. It is quite clear that she was struck down while trying to flee back toward the town. A large gash from a sword is the cause of her death. The woman looks to be in her early 20's.

You may also choose to roll a Perception check if you are searching the area.

Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

Taking 10 on Acrobatics for 30 to move along quickly.

"Just terrible," Alan says with a scowl, his cheerful mood befouled by the sight of wanton slaughter. To think that the malicious spirit had the gall to flee from them! Ambling to join the others, the bard slows only to approach the scene with reverence.

Savage Shaman AC15

"This Knight. He stop anyone from leaving village! You know why?" she asks the halfling softly and away from the others investigating the grisly scene. "How far nearest village? For food." she asks considering that they could work escort duty, an apparent departure from their usual mission. 'Explains why roads so bad.'

Savage Shaman AC15

"Now could travel to this other village for supplies, if closer than Ossington." she taps her pouch, wreathed in flames upon her belt. Indicating that she does have some coin and she's willing to spare it for these starving villagers. "Though going straight to village could help them immediately, they starved." Marainne looks to the others around trying to gauge their thoughts on the matter.

Tuck kicks the little mule forward to the scene of slaughter and regards the bodies sadly, sighing. Sliding from the saddle, he moves to the man's body and beckons to the others. "Alan, Billy... help me lay them to rest. We can do that much, at least."

Alan:
scanning over the body of the dead woman you notice that she is wearing a nice set of silver earings (valued at 5GP). The wagon contains 2 bedrolls, a dozen empty flour sacs, a masterwork crossbow and 20 bolts. There is also a chest but read on for that one.

Looking into the eyes of The Halfling you notice that they are more similar to a cat than a regular Halfling. The purples are slightly pointed rather than round.

the Knight has never entered Ossington. He just prowles the surrounding area taking whatever victims he can. There is a group of adventurers who have been actively working on correcting the situation but have had no luck resolving our dilemma. So far, nobody can figure out who The Knight is or what he wants?

The closest town is still about 2 days ride. At this point the safer alternative is to head back to Ossington. The Knight becomes more aggressive in the evening. It's still early, if we move now we should have no issues arriving before dark.

The Halfling hops into the cart and retrieves a small chest, picks it up, and holds it close to his chest. this is all the money that the townsfolk managed to gather together for food. I need to return it before anything happens to it.
