DougFungus' Crypt of the Everflame (Inactive)

Game Master DougFungus

The Crypt where Ekat Kassen was laid to rest has become an important part of the town's history. This year a group of hand selected individuals have been chosen to venture to the crypt and retrieve the Everflame in time for the autumn celebration.

Doug, a quick request, would you be able to zoom in on the map a bit before taking the screenshot? I have to download the maps and zoom in to see what we're doing properly and it's not like I need to see bits of the crypt that we have never explored.

Also, do you have a simple way of turning our avatars into icons (circular pics with a border as you have done)? I'd love to do that in the game I am running.

Hey everyone, I'm sorry I missed the update yesterday. I'll try to have everything up after work tonight.

Vastar: When you open the image in Skydrive have you tried right-clicking and selecting "view original"? This will open up the image to full resolution within your browser. The maps are already 1400X1697 which is quite large. Its just the way that you view them in Skydrive that makes a difference. I haven't figured out how to get around this problem on a smartphone without downloading the entire image though. If this doesn't work I suppose I could try something different.

As for turning Avatars into Icons, I use Token Tool. Its made by the same people as MapTool for the purposes of creating quick tokens to use in their programs. Its works great for what its designed to do.

Cleric of Erastil (current hp 25, total hp 25; F+4 R+4 W+7; AC19, t12, ff17, Initiative +3, Perception +9)

Right clicking works perfectly, cheers.

I'll try out Token Tool tonight!

I'm almost finished checking out and then flying to Ohio this weekend so posting may be scarce for the next few days. I'll post when I can but feel free to take over if you want to speed things up.

Does anybody know what causes that break line in my posts? It's happened a few times now, including the last 2 posts in a row that I have made. It really gets in the way.

-----

My posting will be sporadic over the next couple days. I'll do my best to keep up with posts but updating the map might be difficult. I will try my best none the less. Things will be back to normal on Monday.

I don't see a break line in your posts. Where are you seeing it?

Role call!

Is everybody still alive from the weekend?

Already posted, I'm still here.

Pip?

I'm going to leave things until tomorrow evening before doing the update. I want to give Pip a fair chance to post.

Here's my forgotten Perception roll. 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

No worries Pip. It was a busy weekend. Glad you're here.

Kaylee, I'm not going to use that perception roll in the current round because I don't have the time to edit it in. Feel free to make a new one for next round if you like.

I'll be posting an update tonight.

Also, I won't be away this weekend so I'll have lots of time to post updates if everyone is around.

male halfling lvl3 rogue HP:23/23

Any suggestions on how we proceed? Anyone know how deep the pits are?

I don't think it is safe to assume that each pit has pillows at the bottom of them. Plus, there could be something (spikes) under the pillows. (I could be paranoid.)

It would be time consuming for Pip to check each square for traps.

Pip could hold the lever and have someone else test the trap location. I'm guessing he has the highest acrobatics skill check and can be the last to walk through this area.

Just a couple of thoughts on the matter.

Human Mobile Fighter 4 (hp 13/40 | AC 17/13/14 F+6, R+3, W+2 (+2 vs. Fear, +2 vs. Illusions) | Init +3 | Percep +4, SM +1)

I don't know if the lever works the pit traps unless you have more info. Based on where the "click" sound is coming from, I think it unlocks the door to the southwest.

The pits are 10 feet deep as you can see by the open one.

Try looking really hard at your map. There could be a clue?

Cleric of Erastil (current hp 25, total hp 25; F+4 R+4 W+7; AC19, t12, ff17, Initiative +3, Perception +9)

Pip, I'm not sure we're racing against time, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Init +4; Perception +7; hp: 28/28 AC 13(17)/12/11(15); F+3, R+3, W+5

Doug:
So, I've put two and two together regarding the 3 gouges on the stones that have pits under them, but I don't want to be metagaming. I did roll a Nat 20 on my perception check for the round where Kerret ended up adjacent to two of the pits (total 25) and 10' away from the pit Kaylee fell into with a strong light source that easily illuminated the area. Is it outside the realm of possibility that Kerret noted those scratches before the pits triggered? Thanks.

Kerret:
To be honest, the scratches were not actually supposed to be there. I added them when planning the map because I know PBP is slow and thought the game might drag out if people were falling in pits every round. I kind of gave away the easter egg without thinking. For all intensive purposes they're supposed to be non existent but you may feel free to play it out however you want.

ANNOUNCEMENT!

I'm not going to be available to make updates July 4 - July 8 because I'm going to be away at A Music Festival. I'll have my phone with me to check on things but there is a strong chance I'll be having too much fun to post anything substantial. I hope this doesn't inconvenience anybody too much.

Have fun! I'll be gone then too, visiting my daughter and son-in-law for the week.

There's bad storms here in this part of Ohio. Shutting down the computer till it blows over. Hopefully I'll have a post up tonight.

Today and tomorrow are the last days I have available to make updates before my trip. Lets try to get a few rounds finished before then.

Hey everyone, I'm back.

As soon as Kaylee and Vastar post their turns we can continue.

Initiative +1, Perception +6 (+8 w/Fenris) Current AC 15, Current HP 29/29 (29/29 non-lethal)

Sorry for the recent lack of postings. My leave is coming to an end and I've been running around like crazy seeing friends and family. I'll be spending the next two days flying across country. After that I should be good to go, so feel free to rp my character in the mean time.

Thank you,
Doc Watson

Can do.

Just waiting for Vastar to finish the round.

Hey everyone,

I need to appologize for the amount of time it's taking between updates. This summer has been really eventful which is a factor. Not only that, my computer crashed this week. Luckilly I make regular backups of the map. The only issue right now is that MapTool is refusing to run on my PC since the crash. I'm working hard on fixing it but I can't figure out where the problem is stemming from. For now, rather than not post updates, I'm going to try and limp along via descriptive text until I can sort things out.

Init +4; Perception +7; hp: 28/28 AC 13(17)/12/11(15); F+3, R+3, W+5

I've heard good things about roll20. It's a browser based map tool. You may want to look into it.

Great News!

I fixed the MapTool issue thanks to some help on their forums. Things are actually running smoother as a result.

Now that that is fixed I'd like to know what everyone thinks of the current pace of the game? Would you like to try and move back to 1 update a day again or maybe leave things until Autumn when things start slowing down? Is this pace fine? should anything be changed? I'd like to know so please speak up. Its my job as GM to make sure each of you are happy so your feedback is important to me.

----

Any news from Pip or Kaylee? They both mentioned they were going to be away for a while but I haven't received any word on when they might get back.

If the 2 of you are checking in while away but don't have time to post IC can you check in here. I can keep botting your characters if you need more time.

male halfling lvl3 rogue HP:23/23

Pip is here! Pace of the game is fine with me. Having a lot of fun as well! This is my first time playing as a rogue.

Init +4; Perception +7; hp: 28/28 AC 13(17)/12/11(15); F+3, R+3, W+5

Game pace is good for me, as long as you're not burning yourself out with making too many maps I think we're doing fine.
My only comment is that I think we could speed things up a bit if we didn't use rounds outside of combat and made things a little more free form, but that's a minor quibble and if no one else has an issue with it, I am happy to keep going as we are.

I'm not burning myself out at all. I thought things were kind of slow.

Unfortunately free form movement is not something I will be incorporating at this time. For starters, I just don't like it. Second, there are encounters just about everywhere in the crypt. As soon as we move into the next module free form movement is about all we will be doing.

Looking back through the module I found that I haven't been giving the correct XP to the party at all...

It turns out that XP is received by completing a room or goal. I've been giving XP based on defeating Monsters and Traps.

This is the actual tally so far:

First Fight (CR 1, 400 XP)
Eyes in the Dark (CR 4, 1,200 XP)(Wolf Encounter)
Treacherous Hillside (CR 1, 400 XP)
Entry Hall (CR 3, 810 XP)
Maze of Pits (CR 1, 400 XP)

400
1200
1400
810
+1400
--------
5210

5210 Divided 5 ways is: 1042XP per person. This is what everybody's XP total should be.

Init +4; Perception +7; hp: 28/28 AC 13(17)/12/11(15); F+3, R+3, W+5

What advancement rate are we using?

Human Mobile Fighter 4 (hp 13/40 | AC 17/13/14 F+6, R+3, W+2 (+2 vs. Fear, +2 vs. Illusions) | Init +3 | Percep +4, SM +1)

Whoa, that's about double of what I had listed. Halfway to level 2 if we're using medium advancement.

We are using the Medium advancement.

It won't be long before Lv. 2 though.

So I just found out that even though I made regular backups of the Map files I neglected to backup the Combat Manager files. This is not a huge deal except for the fact that I've been using Combat Manager to keep track of things like Spell Durations, Light Sources, ongoing Skill Checks and some other odds and ends.

If you have any active spells, checks or light sources etc... (I think one of you is carrying a torch or sunrod) can you let me know here so I can re-input the data. I don't have time to go back through pages and pages of posts to sort everything out. If you're feeling particularly energetic, add a link to the post where it began so I know how many rounds have elapsed and I'll give you an XP bonus for doing the leg work for me. If you have a Light spell active can you let me know what it has been cast on. I like to keep track of that also.

Thanks.

He chants arcane words, and his spear-tip now glows with bright light.

This is from page 5. It happened before we moved the dead horse to check out the skeletal hand, but we went into initiative almost immediately afterwards. I'd be happy with 50 more rounds of light on the tip of my spear since it's got a 10 min/level duration.

My apologies for the delay. It's been one setback after another since I got here. Should be able to post regularly now.

Round 10- Kaylee casted Light on Lorant's shield.
Round 11- Kaylee grabbed a sunrod from Pip and lit it for herself.

Not sure how to link posts but they are both near the top of page 7.

You guys ready to get moving again? This seems like it will be a decent place to hole up if we run out of resources before we finish the crypt.
