Doom Comes to Dustpawn

Game Master shrodingerscat

Dalviss Crenn, ex-adventurer and proprietor of the Mineshaft Inn of Dustpawn (in eastern Isger, near the Drumish border) has sent an invitation to each of you, asking for aid. A meteor recently crashed somewhere in the hills, several miles to the south of Dustpawn, but Dalviss believes it to be a ship from the far reaches of space. The townsfolk scoff at his theory, and to save himself further ridicule, and get to the truth of the matter, Dalviss has turned to you to find the crash site.

Bart:
Clarification: When you say Alar takes a left at the end of the fork, do you mean back toward the group or into the left tunnel (on the other side of the fork)?

If Alar is going down the opposite tunnel (not back to the group) how far in does he travel?

He glances ahead with cold eyes and slides the edge of his thumb over the blade casually, then opens the skin gently on his thumb and lets a trickle of carmine dribble over the edge of the weapon.

He holds the blade up to examine it in the dim light and nods in grim satisfaction as he watches the blood color the steel...

Paul quickly turns at the presence of light suddenly appearing. He moves back down the hall, moves around the corner, pushes past Bart and looks to see where the light is indeed coming from.

Once he observes that it seems to be coming from Ayreth, he studies her for a moment, then turns and returns to his place in the tunnel.

Is there going to be a chance to have coordinates on this map?

New Nesher Map

Bart, in which direction does Alar move (50 ft) to scout the left tunnel? Around the southern wall (in blue outline), around the northern wall (in yellow outline) or straight through the middle of the tunnel? Also, will Alar be moving at full or half speed (quick or slow scout)? The red line is the end of the ioun torch range.

And Paul, at the moment, there is no need for coordinates. Just tell us via narrative where you'd like to move. Thanks.

Linndell, where are you currently? Last action you were moving up the passage behind Alar searching for traps. Will you now be following Alar into the opposite (left) passage/tunnel? Or waiting by the fork, awaiting further info from Bart via the link?

Bart's focus was on what Alar was revealing to him, where the Lion was going and what he was learning. Though the creature was incredibly durable and didn't seem capable of being killed, so much as just dismissed, the lad worried for Alar all the same. He didn't notice either the elf sneaking forward or Paul's thoughtful look toward him. "Alright, he's making his way down the left fork now...

New Nesher Mine Map

Bart via Alar:

Alar moves, steathily and cautiously, 25 ft into the left tunnel when he stops abruptly - his keen sight discerning a pressure plate on the floor of the tunnel immediately in front of him (5 ft square area - shaded in grey on map). He doesn't proceed any further in case he steps anywhere on the plate and sets off the trap. Alar doesn't know what the trap is designed to do, however.

As he listens intently he picks up a muffled sound -- a distant sing-song feminine voice -- which seems to be repeating something over and again, but Alar does not understand the words for the song is in an unfamiliar language.

His nose picks up a strange animal-like scent -- further down the left tunnel.

All this he relays back to Bart via their link.

You may inform your companions of all this via your message spell.

Bart grins broadly and directs the lion to come back, and as he does Bart quietly informs everyone of what Alar found through his message spell. "Alright, Alar found a pressure plate trap, a woman with a singsong voice and an animal scent down the left path. I think... Yeah, the woman was repeating something over and over. Gii, that typical of someone casting a ritual magic spell?"

After thinking it over for a moment, he sends a thought to Alar. 'What do you think? Ritual Magic?'

The lion spends a moment thinking, then sends back not but the equivalent of a mental shrug. Bart carefully considers what he remembered studying back in that nobles house.

Gii:

The repeated phrases mentioned by Alar/Bart do not sound like ritual magic. You can't ascertain any more than that because you have not heard the phrasing yourself. Also identifying certain spells requires spellcraft. Maybe once you're closer to the source, and can hear it for yourself, you can try to discern what it is.

Bart grins at Linndell's reply, but then frowns. "Linndell was it? Good on ya for the trap, but try and keep things in the spell I got ya guys in. You talkin's a lot louder then the spell's whisperin."

The boy was nervous. They were close, possibly very close, to dealing with some cultists that had nearly destroyed a persons mind. Whoever these people were, they were dangerous. Not that Bart hadn't faced danger before, but if what he suspected was true they were affecting a large town with a magical spell, one that even reached Gii and Blue. That bothered him. But he found, oddly, that it angered him more. "Alright everyone, traps done. Lets all move quiet now, ya hear?"

The hands:
Bart speaks with a fairly odd accent... for a human. His words are clipped and rushed, and half the time it sounds like he's using some sort of slang. Though he speaks more slowly then a true halfling it's clear that his accent is an emulation of one. Much like the halfling language, his words are fast paced, but sometimes roundabout in how they describe things. Which particular halfling accent (from northern region, southern region, or whatever country they might hail from) is muddled, but that might be typical of a halfling who traveled a lot since they were young. Any other accent he might have has probably long since been lost by his, possibly purposeful, emulation of this strange way of speaking.

GM's - I know we have the potential to move; but given the type of skills required are ones that Paul simply cannot use (Know Arcana; Spellcraft and so on), and the fact that Left has already ruled that we cannot search for traps unless we formally declare the 5x5 grid we wish to search and spend at least a round searching for a trap - and finally, given the relative damage of the traps earlier; while Paul could move past Linndell to advance; he's currently here to guard the company's only formal healer and without formal coordinates to specify where he might search he cannot make an actual search for traps. So, unfortunately, all he can do is wait for right now; but as soon as the company advances he's ready to move out.
