Doom Comes to Dustpawn

Game Master shrodingerscat

Dalviss Crenn, ex-adventurer and proprietor of the Mineshaft Inn of Dustpawn (in eastern Isger, near the Drumish border) has sent an invitation to each of you, asking for aid. A meteor recently crashed somewhere in the hills, several miles to the south of Dustpawn, but Dalviss believes it to be a ship from the far reaches of space. The townsfolk scoff at his theory, and to save himself further ridicule, and get to the truth of the matter, Dalviss has turned to you to find the crash site.

Paul glances at his companions; noting that Ayreth could cross with magic and noting Blue Heron and her suggestion about possibly just swimming across.

He considers the swimming a moment and turns to Blue Heron.

”Well, I reckon that any kind of swimmer could probably make it across – hell, I reckon it ain’t more than a furlong or so, and there ain't much current to speak of…” he says thoughtfully.

”And as for a rope, there’s lots of options – Miss Ayreth could use some sorcery to get across, I reckon… but so could the kid… I mean, he could summon up some type of thing that could grip rope and hold it on the other side,” Paul adds, nodding to Bart, knowing the lad could summon some things to aid them.

He shakes his head.

”Point is – would this Leera girl have hopped the river to get to that cave on the other side… I don't know, but I don’t see it…”

”But here’s something else worth considering…” he says with a grim voice ”back at the town we heard tales of a dark cult’s forming as well some other suspicious groups of lads around this berg that’re poking around looking for stuff…”

He glances at the sky for a moment, thinking.

”To do a job that involves that amount of sneaking about means lad’s that’re well armed; well funded; lads that have good backing…” he says thinking about the gear that they found so far.

He points at the river.

”Meantime, ya'll see those dark spots in the water? They’re likely deep holes in the river… Deeper than usual… places where the sun isn’t able to get into, though I could be wrong…”

He glances at the sky again.

”Now if something fell out of the sky and scattered around here, it may be that it drove into parts of the water… maybe drove deep into the water… maybe useful stuff that pushed into the water that folk are looking for; folk that know or guess to look into the water and explore the water for useful stuff…”

He thinks of the bodies that they found again; and the gear.

"Based on the terrain around here I reckon that a lot of folk around here don’t normally swim good, so if a boss hires local folk to explore deep holes in water, or get across water, then I’d bet that a good boss with good resources who is intent on finding something special would outfit his boys with gear that helps them get across water, or through water, or into deep water… Like potions that allow them to breathe in the water,” he says with a nod to Gii and the potions that they found.

”It’s too much of a coincidence to me that two lads with high-end gear got knifed, or however they bought it, less than a few days ago near the river; we find the body of another guy by the river with high end gear… and – now that I think of it – we’ve seen trouble from a bunch of giant frogs that are charging us without a need to fight, almost as if something is pushing them to do it… Of course, if I wanted muscle to keep nosy folk from exploring turf that I didn't want them poking around in, using giant frogs dedicated to charging anyone who comes near would be a damn fine way to guard turf without regular folk knowing what's going on...”

He pauses, his mind tacking to another course for a moment as he considers the frogs; their nature; their relative size and the lack of any knowledge he seemed to posses about them...

"Hey - you know what? If that hunch is square that a boss had got 'natural' creatures to guard his turf from outside folk... Well, if I had loot to do that, and power, I probably wouldn't just use regular frogs... Maybe I'd use ones that were made to fight better, and kill better... If that thinking is true then it'd explain why I couldn't remember ever even hearing of a frog like that."

Paul glances at Gii specifically.

"What do you think about that hunch? I mean, I can't think of any frog like that ever - not in tales, or books, or nothing... But maybe that's 'cause those frogs were maybe buffed up with magic or alchemy... And maybe they were left there on purpose - to be guarding that path we found... But why guard it, unless there was a damn good reason..."

"Could be worth checking that area again later on..."

He studies the cave with intent eyes.

”As of now we’re here to do a thing – find the girl. We don’t know who pinched her or, what happened to her, but the thing I’m thinking is; there’s more out here than just a missing girl. We may need to keep our eyes open for those types of clues, too.”

He frowns.

”So yeah - I say keep your eyes opened for natural threats, but I’m betting that whoever the boss of these dead guys are will likely come looking for ‘em soon… And if that happens; they may decide to go after us, too…”

For now Paul will continue to cover the cave entrance with his firearm; just in case. However, if no one is comfortable with swimming or using magic to get across, he'll just swim across and check things out.

I need to do some stuff in real life now; if no one else wants to try something by this evening then I'll give it a try when I get home.

Paul glances around at the others and nods.

”Alright, well I reckon that I’ll take a swing at it… “ he says.

He slings his musket over his shoulder and studies the water, then glances at the others.

Pulling out the rope from his pack, he ties one end to himself and hands the other hand to Blue Heron.

"Don't let go... Once I get I over there I can start pulling people across that can't swim until we're all safe in. Sound good?" he asks, then turns to look at the water.

”Reckon I'll see you all on the other side,” he adds, then he dives in.

Still carrying a light load, so I hope it’s going to work:

I think I need to make 2 swim checks since I can move 15 feet for each “full round”? I’m also hoping that the water is consider “Calm” not “Rough” – if so, I should be okay, providing I don’t roll a 1 :)

Swim Check 1
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Swim Check 2
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

EDIT: Oh for Crap Sake!

Alright, so I go under water on the first round; Check 2 is (I guess) to push me forward 15 feet underwater. I'm down there for about 1 round; so I can hold my breath for another twenty rounds at least. That says - here is the next round.

Swim Check 3 to get to the remaining 15 feet (I hope)
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

PS: While I'm underwater I guess I'll make a Perception Check to see what I see...
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

GM's - please correct me if I didn't make it or need another check.

Paul pulls himself out of the water and climbs into the cave.

He turns back and looks at his allies and waves once, the end of the rope still around him as he looks at his comrades; curious to see who will go next...

Paul reaches the cave entrance with only slight difficulty, going under for a short time. While under the water things seem fairly normal. The water is calm, and mostly clear save for other patches of floating muck, the bottom dotted with similar reeds and roots.
(only one check needed to cross)

Under the water, he can also see a natural kind of platform of rock that sticks out below the entrance to the cavern, and how it slopes up into the cave further, becoming the path. These rocks are covered with algae and so are rather slippery.
(Acrobatics roll to traverse)

Paul attempts to scramble up the rocks into the cave –

Acrobatic Check
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17

Assuming he made it up –

Paul looks back as his mates as he watches them on the other side of the water for a moment.

Noticing that he has some pull with the rope, he moves slowly into the cavern and looks around to see what he can see.

His eyes narrow as he examines the room around him.

Gods damn but I knew I should have learned some sodding sorcery so I could at least see in the dark...

Does Paul need to make a Perception Check, or can he just Take 10 on the room that he's in (for a total of 20)? As he didn't bring anything to light a room, he can't wander too far at this time.

@Paul: yes, you did make it.

Assuming a standard 50' length of rope, you're only able to get up to the intersection where the cavern tunnel splits into the small alcove (to the right) and the further tunnel that leads to the "room"(the left). At that point there is virtually no natural light, so if you wanted to search around you'd have to do it with your free hand. As well, to proceed further into the cave, you'd have to do something with the rope.

Blue Heron will join Paul.

Swim: 1d20 ⇒ 6 Using the rope.

Regarding the light spell, it's directed from the point touched. So that would mean the end of the rope which Gii is currently holding and the 20 ft radius would come from that point. The light spell would be of no use to Paul, who's wandered up from the cave entrance to the alcove just outside the small chamber (15 ft from the cave entrance).

You could light up a larger river stone, try to hurl it across the 30ft river and hopefully have Paul catch it? It's all up to. Or you could wait for all of you to cross the river and then do your light spell.

Since the rope is still around Paul's mid section, if he continues to move up and down the narrow passageway in the cave, this will change the slack of the rope that people are using to cross the river. Please be aware of that. Paul, you could always try to find a place to secure the rope to...let me/us know.

For now there is absolutely nothing he can do but continue to wait.

With the combination of the calm water and the assistance of a makeshift rope bridge, the rest of the characters (exception, Alar...unless you want to get creative with the rope) do not need to roll Swim (to cross the river) or Acrobatics (to get over the slippery rocks)

no need to roll heal, in this case, it's fairly obvious.

Two fine looking daggers are nearby and the older man has a wand resting in his dead hand.

Two fine looking daggers are nearby and the older man has a wand resting in his dead hand.

Paul first examines the dead men and their wounds.

"They're wearing similar clothing... Likely that they were together... But see this? The wounds are like slashes - likely from a big animal with claws as they're too neat to have been done with a set of blades..." he says slowly, glancing around the cave.

"But if it were an animal then it weren't a predator animal, looking to hunt... See the slash marks on the chest?" he says looking at the marks with a frown, then he turns to Gii.

"Predator like a wolf or a lion goes for the jugular when it makes a kill - it rips out the throat fast so you go down quick and it can feed... Whatever hit these lads wasn't going for the jugular... Meantime, they're still pretty intact... That means whatever did this weren't looking for a snack..." he says with a grim voice.

"But if it were a smart killer - you know, not just an animal - than why did it leave the goods and gear?" he says slowly.

He notices that the older man has dark hair and the younger has red...

"Is red hair common to the folk around here?" he muses to himself "I don't know... but I'm willing to be he's an outsider..." he adds.

Paul makes a Knowledge: Geography Check to attempt to "Identify a Creature's Ethnicity" to figure out where the lads came from originally
1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 2 = 13 = The Extra +2 is because they're Paul's favorite enemy and he gets a bonus on them.

He brushes the caked blood aside and examines the tattoo.

I can make multiple Knowledge checks for the tattoo and not sure would be best...

Then Paul will pick up the daggers and examine them; he tosses the wand to Gii to decipher its magical properties...

"What do you make of the wand?" he asks.

Meanwhile, Paul examines the daggers via Appraise:

"Look - I know they're not open or nothing - but they are just barrels with some stuff on them; I mean, it's not not like they're a locked chest or something..." he says to the others.

Any recommendation on which Knowledge Skill to attempt to decipher the tattoo?

Also, where did the men come from initially? I'm guessing not natives, but I may be wrong...

Via the Light Source, since it's a 20 foot radius from the point of origin in bright light, then fading to dim; Paul will make sure to ask whoever it is that has Light cast on them to move around a little in the room so that everyone can see a bit better at this time.

Also, via where we'd move specifically, I'm still not entirely sure how the Light Spell formally works via tunnels. I had a question on the Discussion Thread about that, though.

"Hey, anyone that's got a Light source on them - ya'll want to move around a little so we can see a bit better?" he says to the others with a grunt.

Paul:
@Paul: Your Know Geography check reveals that the younger man (with ginger hair) appears to be from Keld and the older man is Chelaxian in appearance.

We need either a Know Acana or Know Religion check to try to distinguish the tattoo. Thanks.

I'm catching up at the moment and will get to all the questions as soon as I am able. GM lefty has stepped away for a bit. Thanks.

Response:

Sweet! I figured the guy with the beard was from Cheliax; but only because of the fact that I always assume Cheliax people are like Italian or Spanish in hair and skin coloring; so that was a good guess :)

Any word on the daggers; as in - are they MW and their relative worth?

"The dead kid here is from Keld, but the older guy is from Cheliax..." he says slowly.

"Yo, doc - you got any idea what this tattoo might be about?" he asks the priest.

"And while you're at it, want to see if these knives are maybe magical, too?" he adds as he holds up the blades.

Paul glances at Bart.

"Hey, junior - if you really want to help, maybe you could use a Light spell, too? It ain't exactly a sunny day in here," he adds.

No worries GM Righty. Take your time, we can be patient :)

Paul:

From your appraisal check: The 2 daggers are indeed masterwork (+1). You gauge their value at around 245 gp each...

Gii sighs. "Wait a moment, I can only do one thing at a time," the missionary says with a hint of sarcasm in his voice. Looking at Bart and then back to the corpses, he continues, "I will see if I can identify these tattoos, first, and then we shall see what they left behind." He moves to kneel in front of the bodies, carefully considering the symbol marked on their chests.

My ring. And that positioning seems correct from those who have had an opportunity to chime in.

Gii or anyone with DC 20 Know. Religion:
Your Know. Religion check reveals...

Even though the skin is badly damaged, you can still make out what looks like a black disc, surrounded by jagged teeth. It's an obscure symbol, but you have read about it ...

Osiriani legends speak of the mysterious Dominion of the Black. Members of the mythical Dominion serve as emissaries and heralds of their unknowable masters and are said to reside among the darkness between the stars, sustained by the very forces that drive them to madness.

Gii's calm facade shifts very decidedly into a heavy frown. "I have seen this before. This is not good at all," he says to the others, turning to face them while still crouching. "This tattoo is the symbol of the Dominion of the Black. Whoever these men where, their intentions were surely darker than this cave."

Paul looks at Gii thoughtfully.

"I'm guessing that the Dominion of Black thing ain't a local guild, neither," he says with a dry voice.

"Anything else about the Dominion worth noting? Like, for example, did they have any connection to shadow or darkness, or something like that... I only ask 'cause they're both wearing grey cloaks, and "Black" sounds kind of like shadow, so I figured that there might be some kind of significance in the color of their cloak - but if they're a religious crew, then I'm wondering what it might be..." he asks Gii.

"Wait - hang on..." he says waving his hands and just holds up the daggers.

"They each had one of these things - they're well-made; I'd venture a guess that they're connected with this Dominion... maybe like a way to mark them as part of the crew?" he asks.

"But then again, they may be magical, too," he adds.

Response via Appraise:

GM: Quick follow-up question - You said they are worth only 245 each but you also said that they are MW.

Isn't a MW weapon base price at least 300+ cost of the weapon?

I'm just asking because I don't know if the 245 thing is supposed to be the rough resale value or not, or something else entirely.

"The Dominion of the Black serve masters that would drive normal folk, like you or I, completely and irreparably mad. Just by looking at them. These were men who worshipped and served such beings. Not a single one of these things is going to bode well for us." The Nethian removes his glasses and rubs his eyes, holding his staff in the crook of his arm. Putting the spectacles back on, he motions for Bart to join him once again. "We will see what these are. If they are of good quality, then it would not hurt for us to take them for ourselves. I fear we may find need of them soon enough."

Paul:
You failed the DC for Appraise by 5 or less ... so you determine the price of that item to within 20% of its actual value. So you think they're worth 245 gp each but you aren't sure how much exactly.

Paul swings the blades back from the doctor, a little frustrated.

"Well, I don't know where the hell that cult came from; but as for these here daggers, I already got a good feel on what they're worth."

"That said; what I'd like to know now is if they're magic - so if someone here can use a spell to Detect if something is Magical, I'd be real obliged," he adds.

Paul looks at the dead man with a thoughtful scowl. Then he looks back at Bart's magical lion; then he glances back at the dead men.

"We all know that they weren't killed by simple knife work - that's pretty damn obvious by the way they were sliced," he says indicating the pattern of slice work on the torso's.

"We also know it weren't no regular animal that did the killing; no animal that hunts man flesh for food would have sliced them in the chest - it ain't natural and don't make sense... And anyhow, if it was an animal it would have eaten them... And if it wasn't; if it was smarter, then it'd have taken their gods damned loot - which it didn't..."

"Whatever killed them was something that did fighting hard - but not for food - and something with claws... but not smart, or it may have taken their gear..."

He glances back at Alar - "Maybe it was something that was called to kill these lads..." he mutters.

Paul is going to Take 20 and examine the wounds specifically (for a net of 32 in this case, because he gains a bonus of +2 for them being human) - he's looking for evidence of burn marks by or around the claw wounds. If what Gii says is correct and these man are connected with an evil religious cult it is possible that an enemy creature may have been summoned to kill them from the Abyss or Inferno; which would suggest that their wounds would have minor scorching at the edge of slices which would be evident via modest cauterization on the sides of the slice from a demonic or diabolic summoned creature perhaps summoned to kill them for some reason.

@Paul:
You can take 20 inspecting the wounds, that's fine. You would note that they're probably from a humanoid hand judging by the depth and placement, and they are rather wildly placed. You also notice that there are other wounds that appear to be made by a weapon, probably a light slashing one. As far as scorch marks go there are none, but you have no knowledge of planar creatures, so that wouldn't occur to you.
