Sal looks pleased with the nobleman's answer to her question. "Good answer. Although it's a good way to hone your skills, hunting solely for sport is poor stewardship of what nature has to offer to us. But if the majority of the meat will go to feed the people of Sandpoint, then I'd say you've got your priorities in order."

As Roakkad manages to add taste of foot to the menu, she can't help but laugh and shake her head. "I think this is the most excited I've seen you in some time, Roakkad. You too, Zache. We can talk to Father Zantus when we see him later and work out a good day for this hunt. I'd be surprised if he had any objections to it."

Though he might be tickled to think of the lot of us out stomping around in the wilderness.

"Well, Lord Foxglove did already discuss the offer with Father Zantus, so that won't be a surprise to him either. "

"This sounds like an experience that really should have, but it's the first time that I've done anything like this,"Kaede hesitantly adds after a moment. "Is there anything that I should prepare, or be prepared for?"

...these hunting grounds? Are there any other dangers beyond wild boar that we should be aware of? I shall remember to ask Roakkad when we are away from here... he may know of such things...

The food, somewhat more elaborate than what he has been used to during the austere days of building the temple, continues to make it's way to Kaelaah's plate... and, lacking the social niceties that 'Lord' Foxglove would surely be used to, he isn't the slightest bit embarassed when, with a large scoop, he finishes the peppercorned turnip without asking whether anyone else wants it...

...whilst he eats his third plateful, he listens to hear what Foxglove has to say in response to Kaede's question.

"There's a lot of things to be prepared for on a hunt," Aldern answers with a smirk, turning his attention to Kaede in light of Tera's extraordinary shyness, "but no need to worry about those things now, I'll make all the necessary preparations. For now, enjoy your food while you can until you have to head back to meet with the high priest."

If nobody has any more questions or comments for Aldern feel free to say your goodbyes and head wherever you're headed...

"That's right, he did...and I even sat here and heard him say it," Sal responds to Kaede, giving her head a shake. "Sorry, my mind has been all over the place since the attack yesterday. If Father Zantus already agreed then it shouldn't be any problem to pick a day to go hunting."

She raises an eyebrow as Aldern seems to shift his attention from Tera to Kaede, but then shrugs slightly. Based on what she'd seen growing up, most men did seem to prefer women that weren't too shy but also weren't too forceful.

Tera would've been easier to tease though. Oh well.

Not the best post but it's been a day. I'll try and have something better for tomorrow.

Roakkad slowly finishes his meal, watching as Lord Foxglove continues to flirt first with one of the women, then another. The tavern is buzzing this afternoon and Roakkad can feel the tension in the air as people fret over the raid. This causes him to think again of the graveyard, and he stands to excuse himself.

"Thank you again for your generous gifts. The boar hunt will be a great success, I know. I am sorry to leave so soon, but we must speak with Father Zantus urgently, yes?" He collects his staff and draws his hood over his head to block out the mid-day sun. Tsharat takes her usual position on his shoulder. "I will see you all at the cathedral soon," he says, turning toward the entryway. As he does, he spots Ameiko and bows his head in silent thanks.

Nodding in acknowledgement of the lavish meal and the promise of the hunt, Kaelaah bids farewell to Lord Foxglove and hurries after Roakkad...

Kaelaah, normally quite closeted within the confines of the cathedral, needs to do little else than return to the cathedral and await the meeting with Father Zantus and Sheriff Hemlock.

"Spoken like a true Desnan," Sal replies to Zache, unable to keep from smiling at his enthusiasm. "Always looking for a new story to tell...or make!"

Having actually been enjoying herself more than she'd expected to, she looks up with some surprise as first Roakkad and then Kaelaah rise and depart. She glances toward a window and then back at their host. "Well, time flies doesn't it? They're right, we'd probably better think about heading back to the Cathedral. Thank you very much for the meal Lord Foxglove. And for the invitation to go hunting; I'm sure we'll all have quite a time."

As she too prepares to head back to the Cathedral, she adds, "Is there a good way for us to get in touch with you once we've decided on a day?"

It's one thing to watch someone else be the target of heavy flirting, but entirely another to be the target yourself. As such, when Aldern's attention becomes fixated on her, Kaede becomes first flattered, then a little uncomfortable. So, as the others decide it's time to leave, Kaede is more than willing to go along with that course of action.

"Thank you for your hospitality, Lord Foxglove. I'm sure we'll see you when preparations are complete?"

map of Sandpoint | current map

Aldern politely rises when everyone else stands to leave. "I look forward to that greatly," he answers Kaede. "I'll send my valet over this evening to schedule a day with the high priest, as soon as he can spare you" he adds with another charming grin.

Nobody realized quite how filling all the rich foods of the feast were while they were sitting, but now walking back towards the church a contented laziness calls to them. Their pace seems slightly slower than usual and this is not helped by the fact that a number of townsfolk stop them shake their hands or thank them for their roll in saving the city.

Eventually, though, the marked do make it safely back to the Cathedral. Once inside, they find Father Zantus and Brother Faustwick waiting for them. "Tera, I need to speak with you; this way, please" the priest of Abadar states without waiting even for the high priest to speak.

As the two walk off, Father Zantus leads the others up to the private dining room. Once everyone is seated the high priest says, "I've been told that the sheriff should be here any moment now... but quickly tell me, how was your meeting with Lord Foxglove?"

Shoanti Marked of Sarenrae; HP 40/40 4NL, AC16 T13 FF13, Saves: F+9, R+8, W+4, Initiative +3, Perception +9

Kaelaah mulls over Father Zantus’ question, ”It was pleasant enough Father… he has asked us to accompany him on a hunt in the next few sunrises, I think Brother Roakkad here …and Brother Zache are keen”, Kaelaah waits for a moment to see gauge Father Zantus’ reaction before, ”And… he rewarded us for yesterday’s events with coin… should we donate it to the Cathedral? It seems… the wrong thing to keep it for ourselves unless we are able to use it for further good”. The Shoanti, unused to taking the lead in any conversation, scratches at the strapping on his wrists… he is clearly uncomfortable being the focus of attention, even within his own ‘home’.

Father Zantus smiles as the reports come in. "I think it's important that you keep the money for your selves..." he answers Kaelaah, the church may not always be able to support you, particularly if the gods continue to call you down the path they seem to be leading you towards currently. It will be good for you to have the freedom and the responsibility to keep whatever rewards come your way. Now about the timing for this..."

The priest does not get to finish his sentence as Brother Faustwick reappears. Tera is no longer with him; instead, he escorts the sheriff. The sheriff a little bow to the high priest then scans the faces in the room. "Thank you for seeing me so quickly," he says diving right into things without any of the niceties that were customary. "We've managed to get a little bit of information out of some of the goblins. That's the good news. Bad news is the information was dark. Seems there was a person leading them. That's not the worst of it though... the attacks we saw, and fought, were distractions. The real target was the cemetery. While we were busy fighting, this person and his best goblins snuck into the graves to steal something..."

"This is where I figured you all might be of some use, if you're still lookin' to help? My men are all terrified to disturb a holy man's grave... I was hoping that maybe you 'marked' could search the graveyard for me"

When the sheriff finishes giving out his information, Kaede begins to scowl. "I'm more then willing to assist in this matter. What purpose could come from stealing from the dead?" She adds, looking utterly disgusted at the thought of grave robbing. "Do we have any clue who this horrible person is, or were the goblins too addled to give any meaningful description?"

"The best we could get was 'one of you longshanks' and some curses about how we all look alike. Couldn't even get a square answer about whether it was a man or a woman," Sheriff Hemlock answers.

Sal frowns as Sheriff Hemlock shares what he and his men learned. "That's definitely not usual goblin behavior, but if they're being led by someone strong enough to keep them in line then this all makes a lot more sense. Any ideas what or who they were after, or is that our job to find out when we go have a look?"

Kaelaah shivers at the thought of the graveyard, his people - from what he has read - consider burial grounds to be hallowed... and only those chosen may enter.

Roakkad stands abruptly. "Then let us move quickly, before the day's light begins to fade."

Kaede nods to Sheriff Hemlock. "If our clues are in the cemetery, then let's look then. If anything, we can do something about re-affirming the sanctity of it." With that, she'll go to follow Roakkad, pausing only to reclaim her glaive from the entrance.

A bit startled by Roakkad's abruptness, Sal quickly rises from her seat as well. Seems she'd be doing a lot of following after Roakkad if they kept in each others company. "I guess that's settled it then; we'll go have a look right away and see what we can figure out," she offers to Father Zantus and the sheriff.

Or would our investigation in the disturbances... and theft? from the dead be enough?", despite his questions and surprising lack of knowledge about burial practices in Sandpoint, Kaelaah is enthusiastic to go now...

...for all that the Burial Grounds may be hallowed ground, I have little desire to walk them beneath the gaze of the moon...

As the marked rise and prepare to leave, Father Zantus stands from the table and walks over to where Brother Faustwick and Sheriff Hemlock have been standing throughout the conversation. He smiles at Kaelaah's questions and answers, "those who rest here rest in peace; their souls have gone on to the outer planes to dwell with their gods forever. There is no need to appease nor honor them. It is, however, a holy place so please do your absolute best not to disturb anything unnecessarily or to defile anything. Now, let us pray..."

The sheriff awkwardly looks down at his feet while the high priest raises his hands to the heavens and says, "Blessed Starsong, shine on these men and women as they travel into the unknown; grant them good fortune in whatever situations may arise; keep them free of every snare and lead them safely back to us." Lowering his hands, he traces the shape of a butterfly on his forehead with his thumb (and Desnan's often do when finishing blessings and prayers). Then grabbing his holy symbol he mutters a few words in celestial and a wave of white light rolls out from him reassuring and encouraging all present. Everyone gains the benefits of bless

The high priest smiles and gives a little bow to the marked as Brother Faustwick leads them away. After a quick walk through the back hallways of the church he swings open the door to the cemetery. "The gates in from the city are locked. You should be the only things living in here. When you're ready to come back in knock thrice on this door." As soon as everyone has passed through, he swings the door closed and relocks it.

The cemetery is reasonably large but sparsely populated due to the city only being 40 years old. It is primarily a well maintained open field surrounded by a stone wall. It is dotted randomly with clusters of gravestones and three mausoleums.

"Hmm. Father Zantus and Sheriff Hemlock said that some goblins sneaked in here during all the commotion yesterday, right? I'd guess they went over the wall but maybe they found another way in," Sal states as she scans the area for any immediate disturbances. "We should keep an eye out for it, just in case they didn't find what they were looking for and decide to try again."

@Sal- sorry if I wasn't clear enough but there is a gate into the cemetery from the street (besides the door you came out of the church through); that gate is usually left unlocked so townsfolk can visit the graves.

As soon as Tsharat reaches the other side of the mausoleums she begins to screech. Following the hawk, Kaede and Kael quickly notice why and within moments all can see that the door to one of the stone buildings has been smashed in. The mausoleum that was broken into is the largest and least ornate of the three. Engraved above the smashed door is a hexagon circumscribed by a circle a symbol of the church here in Sandpoint, and the six pillars rising to the roof each bare the holy symbol of one of the Cathedral's gods.

As Sal catches up to Kaede and Kaelaah, her eyes flare with anger as she realizes just which mausoleum has been broken into. "This is where Sandpoint's clergy are interred. I don't have reason to come out here much, but I remember this is where they laid Father Tobyn to rest," she seethes. "Bad enough that they attack the town but now they disturb the dead? Gaining entry into the mausoleum is not so much a matter of opening the door as it is of pushing aside what's left of it. The inside is not well lit and the first thing that anyone notices is the smell... Father Tobyn was the last clergy person laid to rest here and the smell of decay from his remains should be long gone by now, but an odor like an open sewer drifts out through the open door.

As their eyes adjust to the dim light, the marked can see an open chamber roughly twenty feet square. The source of the stink is obvious: goblins sometimes use bags of broken pottery and sewer waste as weapons and a dozen or more such bags have been splattered across the walls and floor and ceiling. On the opposite side of the chamber a staircase leads down into the crypts and the splatters and torn bags continue down it.

Stepping inside with a light, the scene becomes clearer... beneath the excrement, the walls are adorned with works of art and verses taken from the various books of holy scriptures used at the Cathedral. Along both of the side walls a long, low stone bench runs from wall to wall; the center of the chamber is clear for ten feet and then drops off into a grand staircase wide enough to accommodate two pallbearers side by side. Even a cursory glance down into the shadowy crypts reveals signs that the intruders had been down there.

The staircase is 10' wide and I'll need a marching order if/when you head down...

Kaede nods at the others, before slowly heading down the stairwell. she resists the urge to draw her glaive right off the bat, though...

After all, what could live down here? Maybe I'm just being paranoid.

Roakkad follows amongst the others, fearful to breathe too loudly. Even Tsharat, sensing his trepidation, remains uncharacteristically still.

"No kidding," Sal mutters to Zache as the group begins making their way down the stairs. "But it'll still take ages to clean all this up and make repai-whoooa!" she exclaims as her foot slips on one of the stairs, making her wobble precariously for a moment. Looking down at her shoe, she scowls. "Slippery. Watch your step..."

The stairs descend for about fifteen feet to a landing that extends to the right. Coming around that corner, another staircase doubles back under the mausoleum. As the party nears the bottom of the second staircase, the light reveals a chamber roughly fifteen feet wide and twenty feet deep. On the far side of the chamber is an empty stone table and about halfway down the right wall there is an archway leading to another chamber. There are half a dozen more splatters in this chamber, a sure sign that the goblins were down here. Suddenly a clattering sound echos from the other chamber...

You're all on the lower staircase still (in the established marching order). Roakkad and Sal may act now...

Roakkad, already nervous about being a mausoleum, visibly jumps at the sound from the adjoining chamber. He points a trembling finger toward the door. His breath suddenly becomes visible, as an icy chill begins to emanate from his hand.

Sorry, I should have added that the archway is 15' from the bottom of the stairs, and with Roakkad and Kael up on the stairs the other chamber is pretty much completely dark.
