Kaede chokes back a scream as her mind registers what has happened to Lonjiku. After a couple seconds of hyper-ventilating, she goes from choking noises, to babbling out a prayer to Shelyn for him in Minkaian. After she finishes her minor hysterics, she says without taking her eyes off of the macabre glass statue, "Even as awful as he was, no one deserves this. And the goblins didn't do this.... So who did?"

Tera doesn't even hear Kaede. Her face bears a blank expression, and her eyes are hollow. She just stares at the scene, and only finds that she feels numb. The manner in which he died was horrible, and a small corner of her mind protested that no one should have to endure that, but she doesn't feel anything, no joy, no satisfaction, no regret, nothing.

Sal's jaw drops at the sight of what has befallen Lonjiku and his workers. A part of her had expected it to be bad after finding the blood-splattered living quarters but she hadn't expected this. She quickly turns away, fighting the urge to vomit.

"He was alive..." she finally says. "The workers were already dead. Whoever did this, it...it had to have been personal..."

Tera hears Sal retching, and finally tears her eyes from the grisly sight before her. She turns to the others, her eyes hollow and dark.

"I know that no one should die like that," the mage says softly, "I know he didn't deserve that, no matter how horrible of a man he was, so why do I feel just numb?"

Tera's words finally draw Sal's gaze away from the horrific sight in front of them. "You didn't know him, Tera - none of us did," she responds quietly. "And...because it's too soon after what happened, I think."

That's probably not going to make her feel any better, you know.

No...that's something Kaede or Zache or Kaelaah is far better at than I am.

"What do we do," Roakkad asks, still unable to look away, "just leave home there like that?"

I'm trying to find some balance between keeping things moving and allowing room for Kaelaah and Zache to get posts in... feedback on that would be welcome.

"We can't do anything right now. I don't think we're strong enough to move him. We need to Find Ameiko. If she was supposed to meet Tsuto here, then she's probably in worse trouble than just goblins," Tera says worriedly as she comes to a disturbing conclusion. The young mage hustles to the door that had been left ajar at the other end of the furnace room.

"Brothers and Sisters... It matters not what we feel, or do not feel, about the man while alive nor now that he has met this fate", Kaelaah speaks with a conviction that he does not truly feel, "We can do nothing for this man... but someone, or something, did this to him... and they must be found and held to account before they can strike again"

...the wisping flames along Kaelaah's wrists have been burning with an ever growing intensity since his eyes set upon the scene here. Seeing Sister Tera moving towards the ajar door, Kaelaah moves to quickly join her.

Tera bursts through the door and quickly looks around... She's fairly certain that it's a hallway, and there're two lumps on the ground that could possibly be the goblins that were fighting each other when the marked came upon them.

Kaelaah, when he arrives, confirms this door opens into the short hallway you've already seen. The final unopened doors (a set of double doors) is on the opposite wall of this hallway.

Seeing it's really dark, Tera calls forth a few sparks of arcane power and lights the hallway.

Once she's sure that this is where they'd fought the goblins, she's gets set to cover the person that opens the doors.

"Right...you're both right, Ameiko is still in danger! We've got to find her," Sal responds, snapping out of the oddly calm haze she'd fallen into on discovering the bodies. Motioning for Kaede and Zache to follow, she hurries after Tera and Kaelaah as they head back out into the nearby hallway. Carefully approaching the last set of doors, she takes a moment to listen before opening them...

Kaede shakes her head out of the miasma that this room put her in, and hurries after the others. "I... If we find whomever did this.... We have to take them into the Garrison. Alive." She shakes her head, in frustration. "Someone has to answer for this in the courts."

As she approaches where the others are gathering, Kaede drops from a hustle to a cautious defensive stance yet again, almost ready to stab at shadows.

"Agreed, but we shouldn't risk ourselves to do it. We give them a chance to surrender, but that is all we owe this person," Tera says, her words taking on an edge of steel at the last few.

Roakkad stands behind Kaede with his scroll at the ready. Sal listens at the door for a moment then, after hearing nothing, she opens it. Behind it is a fifteen foot deep, twenty foot wide chamber. Along the right wall is a desk with a scale and numerous jars of vibrantly colored materials. Up against the far wall is a heap of very fine sand. On the left is a staircase downwards.

Tera guides the lights down the stairway.

"Everyone ready," she asks before following the first person down, her crossbow ready to fire at anything that would attack them.

"Yes. Let's go." Kaede says as she steps in front of Tera and starts moving. As she starts down the stairs, Kaede quietly speaks as she keeps her glaive head in front of her.

Sal nods and steps out of the way to allow Kaede to take the lead, now falling in behind the others as they begin making their way down the stairs. Even though she's almost certain there's no one behind them she can't help but glance nervously over her shoulder.

Following closely behind Salomae, Kaelaah smiles thinly each time that she looks backwards along the stairway... noting her rising concern, the Shoanti worries to himself,

...and if anything does come behind us, we truly are trapped down here...

The marked make their way down the flight of stairs. Now below ground, the only light is from Tera's spell. There's a musty smell to the humid air. The walls of the basement are made of large flat stones, except for a section right at the bottom of the stairs where it looks like an old doorway was bricked over. The hallway continues forward for twenty feet before turning a shallow corner to the left.

Tera moves the lights so that she can see as she peeks around the corner.

Even as they make their way down the dimly lit hallway Sal can't help but glance curiously at the bricked over wall.

Huh...wonder what would've been behind there?

But as they reach the corner she turns her attention back to the matter at hand as Tera peeks around it.

I bet she'd make a good scout, with a little training. She's got the initiative for it for sure.

Peering cautiously around the corner, in the dim magic light, the corridor continues for thirty feet. The last ten of those feet are littered with empty boxes and crates. There is a single passageway branching off to the left just before that alcove. It is difficult to detect but a faint warm glow trickles out into this hallway from the branch corridor...

Kaelaah's voice drops to a whisper, "Over there... light... do you see it? "

Tera nods and dismisses the lights she'd summoned. Cautiously, she moves to the corner where the corridor the light is coming from branches off.

Sal nods approvingly as Tera dismisses the lights, then sighs quietly to herself as her companion shuffles her feet as she tries to sneak forward.

Note to self: remind people to actually pick up their feet when they walk!

Her grip tightens on her rapier but she holds her place for now, not wanting to risk clogging the passageway by trying to push past Kaelaah and the others.

Carefully moving forward, the only sounds the marked hear are their own footfalls. As they look down the lighted corridor they see a thirty foot long passageway with open doorways on the left and right halfway down. At its end there is a torch mounted on the wall next to a closed door that has been jury rigged to prevent it from being opened from inside. On the left side of the hall, all the way at the end, there's some kind of curtain or tapestry.

The young wizard thinks over her all of the spells she has available, and grimaces as she realizes that she has nothing to help her with her current endeavor.

So, find that spell that lets you hit stuff you can see and that other one that can turn you invisible for a few moments, or even that one that can make silent illusions. Heck, any illusion spells really.

Trying much harder this time to be silent, she moves to the door that's been rigged to keep it form being opened from the inside.

Stealth: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

Unfortunately moving silently was never covered in her arcane classes.

Sal blinks as Tera moves right past the two open doorways on each side of the hall, holding her breath as she waits to see if her passage alerts anyone or anything that might be looking towards the hallway...

If Nothing Happens:

Relieved that all remains quiet, Sal herself opts to creep up the hallway as far as the two open doorways. Hugging the left wall, she cautiously peers through the opening on the right and then the one on the left.

Kaede is a great many things, but quiet is not one of them. As such, she pauses at the corner and holds her glaive in a ready stance as Tera attempts to sneak forward, so that she has a place to retreat into cover.

Realising that the light of his flames is liable to alert anyone down here in the dark, Kaelaah lets the fire die for now... and, even though sister Tera has somewhat revealed their presence already, he tries to move as quietly as possible...

...and, as his knife clatters to the floor, he mouths an apology to his companions.

The marked begin to spread themselves out through the basement of the Glassworks. From the center of the narrow corridor, Salomae visually inspects the two chambers: both appear unoccupied, the one on the left has more empty boxes and crates to one side and assorted junk, like broken glass-working equipment, to the other; the chamber on the right has a cluttered desk and an empty cot. Down at the end of the passageway, Tera discovers two things of note... the curtain is not a tapestry but a bed sheet hung on the wall, and there is a faint, somewhat feminine, groan audible in the locked room.

Tera, hearing the groan, motions for Sal to come join her.

"It sounds like someone's hurt in there," she whispers once Sal's there, "it sounded feminine, so it might be Ameiko. Help me with the door."

Assuming Sal helps.

Tera removes the bolt from her crossbow and unsets the string before hanging it from her belt. That little matter of prudence taken care of, she begins to work on undoing the jury-rigged lock.

Sal moves closer, but shrugs a bit helplessly when Tera asks her to help get the door open. "Um, picking locks is a bit beyond me...but I can try..."

As Tera attempts to jimmy the lock, Sal watches from over her shoulder and tries to offer what advice she can. "Try twisting it a little...then turn it to the right..."

Actually have no idea if trying this will even fly since we're both untrained in DD but the rolls are there just in case :)

Locks, traps and other mechanical intricacies are far from Kaelaah's forte... and so, with his knife held in anticipation of something untoward happening, he watches Sister Tera and Sister Salomae.

Kaede slowly creeps forward as Sal and Tera work on the door. Never taking her eyes off the bed sheet, she braces for something to burst through it.

"Please hurry," she whispers, preparing to defend the others from whatever could be past the sheet.

The 'lock' is little more than some ropes and a wooden wedge that stop the door from opening. It could be opened with some slashing damage or a DC 10 disable device check that can be attempted untrained (and which you have succeeded at).

While Tera and Sal work, Kaede moves cautiously forward, followed by Zache and Roakkad. The two at the door make quick work of the crudely improvised locking mechanism and the door swings open with a rusty squeal. The room is little more than a closet with a pile pillows and blankets tossed on the floor. Lying atop the pile is Ameiko. Her face is bruised and there are several places where her pants are cut and stained with blood, but it's clear from the movement of her chest that she is still breathing.

The basement grows silent for a moment as the godmarked pause to process what they are seeing. Just as quickly as it fell, though, the silence is shattered by a choking, wet cough. Spinning around they are shocked to see Roakkad, scroll still in hand, staring back at them with dull empty eyes. Blood runs from his mouth and down his chin, drawing attention to the tip of a shortsword protruding from his chest. He falls lifeless to the floor, allowing an unobstructed view of a half-elf with a cruel grin, dusted from head to toe in the fine sand that was heaped at the top of the stairs. Those who have been in Sandpoint for more than a couple of years recognize him as Tsuto Kaijitsu...

Block A: Kaede, Kaelaah, and Zache may act now. The hallway is only 5' wide... I'll post something in the crude map link as soon as I can, but basically there's Tsuto, then an empty space, then Zache (who is lined up with the two open doors); Kaede is right next to Zache, then there's an empty space, then Kaelaah, and finally Tera and Sal who are squeezing into a single space at the door to Ameiko's make shift cell.

Any thought of compassion, justice or redemption... the teachings of his mentors... human decency... they all burn away in a fury as Roakkad, the closest of those that Kaelaah would call brother or sister, is brutally murdered. Kaelaah's dagger drops to the floor - a crude weapon compared to the shapeable inferno - as, wreathed in flame, the Shoanti screams for vengeance.

Kael, do those numbers include the point blank bonuses? Currently Tsuto is not engaged in melee but he does have soft cover from everyone but Zache.

A gout of flame springs from Kaelaah's outstretched arm and speeds down the corridor toward his brother's murderer. The blast strikes Tsuto squarely in the chest, wiping the grin from his face.

Kaede gasps as Roakkad falls. For a brief moment, she has the urge to cry out in sorrow, but that changes when she looks at the sadistic grin on a Tien-Min half-elf that she's never met before. With her expression growing cold as steel, she steps forward past Zache and strikes at the murderer.

Zache's mouth goes dry, his blood turning to ice at the sight of Roakkad's body on the floor and Tsuto's wicked grin. He wants to rush forward, to slice the half-elf's throat open in a cruel mockery of that smirk, but a rare moment of level-headedness wins out.

Instead, he points his free hand directly at Tsuto, clutching his starknife tighter.

he begins, his voice clear and strong, and betrayig nothing of his horror.

Tsuto's smugness quickly returns as Kaede's glaive misses badly. With a smirk he slashes at the Shelynite with his shortsword.

Block B: Tera and Sal are up. Tsuto is within 30' of everyone (barely), but is engaged in melee and has soft cover from everyone except Kaede. And, remember, you two are currently squeezed into the same square, so one (or both) of you has to move into the gap between Zache and Kaelaah or you'll take the squeezing penalties...

Tera feels as if she'd been punched in the gut. Part of her just wants to curl up and wish it all away, but the young mage knows she can't give in to that temptation. Instead, she draws on the last vestiges of her arcane power and steps up between Zache and Kaelaah.

"Tsuto, there is no need to fight here, is there," Tera calls out in a soothing, subtly alluring voice, "we have been playing along, pretending to be Sandpoint's obedient dogs. I must say that I love what you've done with that pompous blowhard upstairs. Perhaps we'll find your other plans just as intriguing."

Casting Charm Person, Will DC14 to negate. Last for 1 hour if he fails. I think I can make the Bluff check for free, and that is how to pass a secret message, but if not, then I'll stand by any GM ruling.

It takes Sal everything she has to keep from attempting to gut Tsuto like a fish, but she can see that Tera is angling to learn more from the man. She had to trust her friend.

He'll pay for what he did. He will. Don't lose sight of that Sal!

But though she is able to stay her hand, she can't offer any words to Tera's ruse. Not yet.

Sal will wait and see if Tera's plan works or not.

Yes, I did take into account the Point Blank Shot bonus for the attack... In future, I will segregate it out as '+3 +1' rather than simply '+4'.

Sal held her action, so she's in block A now. Block A can act. I'll update the crude map shortly but, basically, Kaede's in melee with him and providing soft to/from everyone else, and the only way for anyone else to get into melee is to wait for her to move or try to tumble through Tsuto... which would let you flank, if you succeed (DC 17).

"Father Tobyn? What does he have to do with this?" Sal snarls. With Tera's attempt at subtlety apparently rebuffed, Sal grips her rapier in her hand as she attempts to dart through the melee and past Tsuto...

Two bookkeeping things: 1) Kael- it's -4 for cover and another -4 for firing into melee (unless/until you take point blank), so your rock solid 21 gets dropped to a much less reliable 13. 2) That was the total wrong DC for the tumble check... That would have been to avoid AoOs, tumbling through is actually DC 22...

Kaelaah blasts another jet of flame through a narrow opening between Kaede and Zache; Tsuto very nearly dodges it but it catches his side, leaving a smoldering burn. Unfortunately, the fire in such close quarters startles Salomae so badly that she nearly crashes into Zache halfway into her first cartwheel and has to abandon her attempt to tumble down the corridor.

Waiting on Kaede and Zache before Tsuto goes again.

The searing pain from the stab does cool Kaede's temper just enough for her to recognize the skill that he uses to hold the blade. As such, she drops into a stance that's great for blocking attack, but not so good for making them, before going to strike with both ends of her glaive.
