"I agree. We'll never see this pyramid again in our lifetimes. I want to see and record what's in that final tomb. So my thought is that we load up as much treasure as we can stagger out of here with, leave it near the entrance, check to see if Lonicera can leave in the presence of a Mask-Bearer, and then go raid us a tomb. If there's time and we're all still breathing, we come back here and haul as much out onto the sands as we can until just before Zero-Hour."

We did assemble the blue one, Dien handwaved it.

More specifically, you figured out the BLACK tiles made a rune. The blue ones were fine/safe. Will post more later, just tossing in that quick clarification.

I figure Dien would have posted if I was all dead and corpsified, so I'm going to assume I removed the bracers with no ill effects.

Seeing as the mummy hasn't throttled him, Shaggar shrugs and pulls off the mummies rings, etc. and tosses them all into a bag along with the bracers. Once done, he begins scooping the riches from the river in. He considers the discussion, "I could leave the betrayer's crypt unseen... but if you wish to explore it, I'll come along."

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

Bleh, sorry, meant to post a little bit after my last and then my grandma decided to be sick all day and time got taken up with that.

In short: nobody is cursed, killed, dead, or otherwise impacted by the looting of the pharaoh's body. In less time than it takes to tell, the pharaoh has been stripped of his valuables. He seems to remain a quiescent, calmly-recumbent-if-kinda-brittle-corpse.

Lyrian examines the reassembled blue sigil with his arcane skills; it is indeed magical. He can detect transmutation magics on it, but is unable to discover the exact incantation. It is possible this is due to his being distracted by the sight of something very shiny. Even in the midst of all the wealth around them, this headpiece stands out: platinum shines in the light of the room, and blue gems of exceptional clarity and purity catch the light and blaze as if on fire. It's an exquisite piece, and no doubt adorned the brow of the pharaoh himself. Lonicera whistles appreciatively.

Lonicera has a handy haversack, and has now emptied out almost everything else in it to make room for treasure. I'll assume you guys load that thing UP with gold, etc, before leaving the room. It sounds like both Lyrian and Heldar are advocating going for the Fiend Pharoah's tomb?

To answer other questions: you think you have about fifteen hours left before the start of the window indicated by the big clock. And Visitor and Stranger have both been used interchangeably, to an extent.

Lonicera has a dreamy smile on her face as she makes her way to the exit, her backpack bulging with gold. "So much...."

HP:12 | AC:16 ; T:11 ; FF:15 ; CMD:16/15 | Fort:+4 ; Ref:+3 ; Will:+2 | Init:+3 ; PER:+6 (Darkvision)

Let's get on to the final crypt!

Shaggar throws fist fulls of random coins and items from the river into his bag, not trying to top them off so much as just fill in the gaps in his stored gear. Before they are even 1/2 full, he stops and ties them off. Money was never a driving force in his life.

He hefts the bags over his shoulder, making sure he isn't slowed to a crawl, and head for the exit.

I'll throw in coins but won't break the heavy load limit.

Lyrian, if you detect magic on, or otherwise closely inspect that helmet you found:
It is indeed magical. You inspect it carefully... only to discover that the source of the magical aura you detected is, in fact, an encircled rune of subjugation.....

The team makes their way back through the pyramid, returning up the elevator shaft to where they left the bound Scepter, as well as the one room they haven't been in, yet. To their possible disconcertment, Scepter is no longer there. You do see the ropes that had tied him in the room with all the standing skeletons of the guardsmen, and a blade on the ground where it appears he managed to rub against it until he had severed the ropes.

"Damn," Lonicera mutters, her brows knit. "Well... presumably, like me, he couldn't go out the front door.... oh-- I wonder if the blue tiles saying Exit mean that now I could..."

She looks, briefly, more excited by that than by even the copious amounts of gold stuffed into her pack, then sobers again at the thought of Scepter being free. Rosalia says sharply, "Is he going to try and ambush us?"

"...I don't think so," Lonicera murmurs, with some hesitation. "He's a... a cockroach, and above all else they just want to scurry away for another day. I don't put it past him to try something nasty and spiteful, but I doubt he'd try an outright assault. Not when you've already beaten him once, and not on his own. He favors lightning and fire magics, if that helps."

Though the group looks cautiously around the entry floor, Scepter doesn't appear to be lurking here. Presumably he might have taken advantage of the time you spent selecting the choicest treasures, down below, to take the elevator further up into the pyramid. Either way, there is no sign of him, not even when Rosalia checks with her spells.

Rosalia scowls, tapping her fingers against Scepter's weapon-staff. "Let's have Smart guard the elevator shaft," she suggests. "To make a ruckus if he hears anyone coming. I don't want to have to traise through every inch of this place bracing for a lightning bolt to the face as we try and hunt him down. Let's just finish and get out of here..."

Seeing the wisdom of this gentle GM fiat, the group prepares to enter the last and final tomb...

It takes considerable effort, and a lot of huffing and grunting from Shaggar (as well as a grease spell from Rosalia on the stone block door) but ultimately the rock is dragged out of the way....

You would be able to do any buffs you felt like before entering the room, so if you have buffs, just say so. Lyrian's Heroism is still active on him, but that's a 70 minute buff; lesser buffs from the dragon fight are expired.

The room beyond is not terribly large, especially compared to the elaborate chambers you have seen for the other pharaohs. It is also considerably less fabulously decorated. In fact, it seems to be little more than a store-room. The walls are lined with shelves, and on the shelves are dozens of clay jars-- canopic jars, as any Osirianologist worth his salt could say. They are rather plain, however-- not marked with the cartouches, elaborately molded stopper lids, or precious gems and metals that often decorate the canopic jars of the wealthy and powerful. Should anyone take the time to count them, there are a full fifty-six jars lining the walls of the chamber-- save for a bare spot of stonework on the north wall. The jars are all sealed with wax.

The center of the floor of this room is engraved with a five-pointed star cut in grooves in the floor. The grooves are filled with old, brown discoloration.

Kn Religion DC 10:
The star is, of course, the symbol of Asmodeus, Prince of Hell.

Perception DC 20:
There's a noise in this room, almost subliminal at the edge of your hearing...? Squinting around, you try and pinpoint it. After a few seconds, you realize that all of the jars are each... rattling, just a bit. Vibrating, really. It's barely perceptible, but the soft noise of each jar of fifty-six clattering slightly on the shelves is combining to make that noise.

Kn Engineering DC 10/Dungeoneering 15:
It looks as though the blank wall to the north is actually a bricked-up section, rather than the solid, huge marble blocks you've seen so far.

A now normal-sized and fully healed Shaggar (Thanks to Heldar's channels) crouches down, fingers Sceptre's discarded bindings, and lets out a satisfied snort. "Good. If our paths cross again, we won't be obliged to let him live." That seems to settle things for the gnoll, mostly. "Though if he steals my flying egg... I will be displeased."

..........

Shaggar huffs for a long minute after finally getting the Fiend Pharaohs crypt open. The gnoll eyes the room cautiously from the doorway and sniffs the air, observing, "The north wall is made of bricks, I think, not those these slabs of stone."

No buffs for me - I'm down to Resist Energy and given the size and content of the space, I don't think enlarging would be wise. Can we say 'bull in china shop'?

Javi nods at Shaggar’s revelation about the far wall, then tilts his head to the side, pointing an ear at fist one set of jars, then another. "Um ... anyone else hear that buzz? The jars are all rattling, all at once." He looks at the Pathfinder casters, "What does that mean?"

”Maybe one of you could bathe this place with your magic-detecting powers before I take a closer look?”

Assuming someone does so, and fore-armed with any information that provides, Javi pulls the goggles back over his eyes (Goggle Powers: ACTIVATE!) and stalks into the room, noiseless feet carrying him in a counter-clockwise circuit as he sweeps for traps, taking special time to see if there are any other details to be gathered about the dancing jars.

Shaggar's ears lay back along his canid skull, an involuntary reaction to the ominous news. "Does this buzzing come from the jars rattling or from within the jars?"

After the Bless cast, Heldar will cast Detect Magic, and observe the room, looking for auras.

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

Heldar and Rosalia duly cast, and then concentrate, on any auras within the room...

"Mmm. There's some faint conjuration magic on the pentagram," Rosalia says, frowning, "and some evocation, a little stronger, in that jar-- no-- that one-- no, third on the right, down. Yes, that one," she says with a little nod. "And... some necromancy permeating the whole room, I think. Ugh. It's hard to think in here."

Lonicera hovers behind the others, clearly uneager to go in herself. Javi, you don't find any traps on your careful searching of the room. Examining the bricked-up section, you brush off a little green paint to confirm it is just bricks, here, looking somewhat sloppily mortared together.

As for the jars... they are jars. Some are big, some are smaller, and when Javi studies them intently, he confirms what he already thought: each jar is moving just a bit, creating that clattering noise as the clay bottom rattles on the wooden shelves.

A pentagram. Some jars. A false wall. All things which, by this point, the Pathfinders and honorary Pathfinders are duly paranoid of messing with... but there seems to be little else in the room.

"Well. No treasures, or texts, or anything else of value. Should we go, then? I would quite like to see if I can get past that block on the door..." Lonicera says, uneasily, her arms wrapped around herself as she gazes into the room.

Everyone else has already expressed the IC-desire to move forward, Heldar. If you want to explore in the room, touch stuff, open jars, break down the wall, etc. etc. then please, feel free, but asking for opinions on it... when everyone's already given their opinions... won't get you to that Heldar-specific bit of treasure faster. ;)

Sorry, I don't want to sound like I'm telling you not to roleplay out the asking your teammates what they want to do. It's just that a post like that, that doesn't contain any actual actions in it, will mean another two days real-time of people checking in, expressing their IC opinion (which has already been expressed), etc. I doubt anyone will actually stop you from taking steps to "unravel the mystery" as you say, but waiting to get a get group consensus on it, at this point in the game, is just time-sucking from an OOC perspective. So.... want to stick any actions onto that post?

Rosalia shrugs at Heldar. "I'll let you go in the room and start poking at things," she volunteers. "Sorry. Creepy jars and an Asmodean pentacle aren't anything I want to touch."

Male Half-Elf Oracle (Dual-Cursed Oracle) 7 || Init +2; Senses low-light vision; Perception +14 || - hp 51/51 Spell slots: 3rd (3/5) - 2nd (7/7) - 1st (6/8) - 0 (at will) || Channel (1/8) || Energy Body (7/7)

The question is actually quite straightforward Dien - Heldar has zero exploratory skills apart from his Perception - he cannot find traps, cannot break down walls, is no martial threat, etc. Since we work as a group, he addresses those than can take a second pass at doing that or, according to their own skills, be able to perhaps think on another approach that can be taken to this particular room, apart from leaving.

I have no intention to delay the game, nor do I usually think I do so. It was a simple conversation to try and convince the group to press on. Never mind then.

Heldar looks surprised at Rosalia's words, and his tone of voice shifts - "Thank you Rosalia. Perhaps I will take the same approach whenever you require healing? And 'let you heal yourself'?" - he does answer without skipping a beat - "I was under the impression we were here to perform a task for the Society, and to do it as a team" - he finishes dryly, moving into the room.

He focuses his attention on the brick wall, touching it carefully, looking for openings, or some way to open it.

If he finds none, will ask if anyone has a pick, or something else that can serve a similar purpose, and request his companions to leave the room while he tries to open a hole in the wall.

Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (18) + 14 = 32

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

And that would all be valid if other people in the room hadn't already attempted to find traps. But Javi has. The room has been swept for traps.

My point is merely that if you're trying to do this by consensus, the consensus vote has already been cast, and you're the minority and sole voice arguing against it. Meaning that you have one of two options: act solo, and trust your party to back you up if you get into trouble, or accept the group decision, already expressed, to leave. Simply asking people in-character to change their minds is not a post that actively moves the game forward. Not trying to pick on you here, but when every single other PC has expressed an in-character desire to move on (and by default, a reasonable OOC expectation of being Done with the game in short order), then being the one to be like "no, guys, come on, let's do this last room" and having more in-character arguing about it is.... well, at that point, it's like, just Do the Thing, etc, so that we can get to whatever may happen. As opposed to having further in-game discussion of whether or not we're gonna Do the Thing.

Also, you're tied with Javi as having the highest normal AC in the group (while also having the highest flat-footed AC), you have the best will save, you're an anti-undead nuke, and you're arguably either the strongest or second-strongest directly offensive caster (you have the only damage-dealing AoE spell of anyone in the group, with Burst of Radiance). So, you're no worse than anybody else in the group at fielding numerous problems, and better at responding to a lot of them. There are plenty of things your character can do in his own right, even offensively, leaving aside your powerful healing.

Anyway, I'm pretty ready to be done with this scenario myself, and I'm not interested in beating this into the ground, so, here, GM fiat, and NPC response to your dialogue:

Rosalia gives Heldar a cool brow arch in turn. "And when I go out of my way to pick a fight that I don't have to," she answers, "you can tell me to heal myself. Having nearly had my soul eaten by that thing upstairs, you'll pardon me if I'm in a hurry to get out of here. The Society didn't mention elder-god-thingies trying to corrupt my will and make me into their puppets."

Heldar moves into the room. He goes over the same territory that Javi already searched, looking for any way to open the wall of bricks. It becomes apparent that Javi's search missed nothing: it does not appear the wall was ever intended to be re-opened, as it is not, in fact, a secret door, but a bricked-up section of wall.

The jars, meanwhile, continue to rattle faintly on their shelves. There's a sense of palpable tension in the room that has nothing to do with the bickering of Pathfinders who have spent too long in each other's company.

Lonicera watches uneasily from her spot in the back as Heldar asks for a pick. "If this room is connected to the Fiend Pharaoh," she says, "then we'd probably better be on guard against devilish things, hadn't we? Julistar said that Hetshepsu was favored by Hel--"

When Lonicera says the name 'Hetshepsu,' the jars begin to vibrate more violently, and a sound like a rage-maddened scream builds at the edge of hearing. By the time she gets to 'Hell', and realizes something has happened, all fifty-six of the jars shatter in an eruption of clay pottery and gore.

A mass of.... writhing.... something bursts outward, flopping onto the floor in a gush of embalming fluid. Red, pinks, and yellows are the primary colors of the sudden flood of small, squirming, violently active objects.

Lyrian and Shaggar are the first to react. The mass of squirming abominations on the floor seems to be... body parts-- they can see a slithering mound of small intestine, gleaming wetly with embalming fluid, over in this corner; and in this other corner, several severed fingers trying to writhe and twist their way back towards one another; a lower jawbone, teeth gleaming white through the rest of the bloody offal, starts bouncing on the stone towards Javi...

Welcome to swarm-land. For the record, the swarms are composed of Tiny body parts, meaning it can still be hit with slashing or piercing weapons, albeit at half-damage.

Knowledge Religion, DC 15:
You believe that the body parts are animated with unholy energy, and are indeed undead.

Knowledge Religion, DC 20:
(the previous spoiler, and) However, like mummies, the squirming organs have some innate resistance to physical damage, which can best be overcome by using slashing weaponry, if you must attack them with an actual weapon.

Knowledge Planes, DC 20:
You believe that this particular flesh might have some hellish properties-- such as being resistant to cold, fire, and electricity.

Lyrian and Shaggar, you're up! Map updated. If it is not clear on the map, each swarm takes up a 10x10 space.

Shaggar unleashes an angry snarl and strides into the room, stepping over the Asmodean sigil wince, to protect Javi's flank. The gnoll's red eyes take in the scene. Given the multiple masses of writhing Pharaoh chunks (Osiriani Salsa), he drops his trusted axe and pulls the black iron heavy flail that has long rested in his belt.

His obviously-sarcastic remark is cut off as the sh!t-storm commences.

Just a bit of flavor.

ORGANNNNS! Soylent Green is PEOPLE! or.... something. I'm stealing some time on a family member's PC to update the fight, will try and keep us going since it's so close to being done.

Lyrian's arrow bursts into one of the clumps of squirming parts, skewering a pancreas, but has little effect on the swarm as a whole...

The seething masses of flesh twist over the three people in the room. An almost palpable sense of furious rage radiates off the gore-covered organs...

Everybody except Hatyah, make me a will save.

If you fail the Will save, DC 15 (mind-affecting fear effect):
You are unsettled as hell by the fact that a swarm of undead body parts are trying to eat you and your friends. You are shaken for the next 2d4 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5 rounds.

As the severed bits of flesh and bone crawl over the people in the room-- teeth biting, fingernails gouging, splinters of ribs and femurs finding any cracks in armor-- Shaggar, Javi, and Heldar find that it, well, hurts.

Damage to Heldar, Javi, and Shaggar: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 4) = 9

If you begin your turn in a swarm square, make a DC 15 Fort save. Failure means you are nauseated for one round.

Lancer looks disgusted and freaked out. "I can do nothing against mindless swarms like this!" she shouts. She backs further away, but, at least, she does start to sing.

Ok, I don't want to drag this also, but in fact, like I said, was only trying to convince the other characters to change their mind, and I think OOC would not be the place to do it. I understand it is hard to move a PbP when there is the need for a debate between characters, but hey, it just happened :)

Also, I am not in a hurry to end this game - I like the group, and I like the GM, so I'm gonna draaaaaaaaaaag this all the way through :P

Heldar winces as the mass of undead animated organ and body parts wash over him - trying to stay calm, in spite of the horrifying sensation, his mind races through what he has read or heard about such disgusting entities - "These foul remains are animated by negative energy" - he informs the others - "Effectively non-living, or undead, and particularly resistant to weapon attacks - slashing them is our best chance" - the oracle continues - "Not only that, but I believe them to be hellish in nature, and thus resistant to cold, fire, and electricity"

That being said, he steps aside, focusing on harnessing the life forces all around them into a concentrated point, that immediately bursts outward, trying to wash away the mass of writhing undead.

There is no room for fear due to the epic amount of stomach content rocketing out of Javi ... who stumbles for the exit.

i don't have map access. Can someone move Javi out the exit. He'll avoid moving through the swarms if possible, but the priority is getting clear.

Happy birthday! As my gift to you I will move you on the map.

Javi horks and moves for the exit, pushing past Rosalia... Some of the organs and body parts go with him, stubbornly hanging on and causing him another 1d6 ⇒ 6 points of damage before they finally fall off.

Rosalia Will save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Rosalia grits her teeth. "I'm probably going to regret this," she mutters, casting a spell and then rushing into the room to touch Heldar with it. Heldar finds himself more buoyant.

"You're the best of us at dealing with this mess," she says shortly. "You should get off the ground so they can't get to you. And if you imply I'm a coward again because I don't want to stay any longer than needed in the same place with that evil bastard who got in my head, I'll see what other spells I can cast on you too."

Shaggar attacks the swarm pooling at his feet with reckless abandon. The massive flail head slams down repeatedly, attempting to pulp pharaoh bits on the stone floor. A creeping sliver of lung launches at the gnoll's face, trying to stuff itself into his mouth to seal his airway. It is greeted by a set of snapping gnoll teeth. He nods approval at Rosalia's words and spits out a gobbet of undead lung.

Lyrian sends another arrow into some of the swarm-- ping! Got a pancreas!

The seething tide of organs has not stopped its attempts to consume the living whole. It surges over Rosalia, Shaggar, and Heldar, tearing at their flesh. Intestines wrap around limbs, and shards of white bone attempt to burrow, maggot-like, into their bodies...

For those three PCs: another DC 15 Fortitude save when you start your turn, or you are nauseated.

Lonicera kinda got in your way, but there's still a spot with a clear throw line for you, and I have moved you accordingly.

The feeling of disgust is almost overwhelming, as the multitude of organs surge over Heldar and his companions - not only that, but the fact that internal body parts would actively try to end the adventurer's lifes, is not something easy to cope with, but they do so.

"Thank you" - he manages a smile to Rosalia, willing himself to ascend until he feels to be at the range limit where the swarm will not attack him anymore, and again focuses the power of Life to banish the monstrosities from around them - "Enough of this foulness"

It looks like I'm no longer in a swarm square so I'm leaving off the save. Let me know if that's incorrect. If I fail the roll, I'll use my fingerbone for a re-roll.

Free of the massing organs, Shaggar growls and renews his furious attacks on the final swarm - hammering it without mercy. He coup de graces a particularly large wedge of pharaoh skull with his canines and spits out the splinters.
