Once the others are assembled, I say to them.
I do not know what is down there, but if it a fish or animal of the water, I may be able to make it non-hostile. There are no guarantees, but it is worth a try.
Here are some rolls since I will likely be busy tomorrow and might not be able to post.
Wild Empathy: 1d20 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 + 1 = 1 <-- essentially diplomacy to improve attitude, works on creatures that have a swim speed or the aquatic or water subtype; however, she can improve the attitude of any such creature with Intelligence 2 or less regardless of type, including mindless creatures.
And with that roll, I ticked off the creature and all of its relatives.
MIDN. Cedrick Dragonne |
"I have a few weapons we might use. I had an encounter with a fairly large spider down there a couple of days ago, perhaps there are bigger ones"
"One moment"
Cedrick ducks away momentarily. On his return he carries three maces along with his club.
"Whoever needs a mace please borrow one, I will keep a hold of my club, should work well enough"
DM - Voice of the Voiceless |
You make your way casually through the ship to the hatch atop the bilges. As the dark holds no power over your sight, you forsake the use of lanterns or torches. Opening the hatch you are affronted with a flood of fetid stench and blisteringly hot air. The area below looks no different than you would expect, the seeped water lapping close to knee high and murky so as to restrict your vision of what is within it.
Who are the first four down the ladder?
MIDN. Cedrick Dragonne |
"I've been down here twice in the last few days, I'll go ahead. Deader maybe you can join me too, same as the other day"
Cedrick leads on, hoping his leathers and club keep him safe.
Obisyth |
Retcon - If you have a spare club, I could use one. There are few weapons that I can use which do not interfere with my abilities.
I will go down with the first four.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
John Rhasp |
"Right behind ya." Deader says mucking into the bilge without a care after hefting one of the maces."
As he moved into the waters he crouched and grinned. "Makes ya feel alive, doesn't it."
with Unnatural Presence, Deader can use Intimidate on Vermin, so he's readying an action to do that.

DM - Voice of the Voiceless |
Four of the group make it down the ladder into the fetid water of the bilge, leaving Nachni atop it before the first of the denizens makes it's appearance. A pair of fist sized spiders appear on the rungs of the ladder you just descended...
You're clustered around the ladder in the bilges (as in within 5 ft of it), except for Nachni who is up top. Map will be live tonight, but shouldn't be required for actions.
Cedrick: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Obisyth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Nachni: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Joneth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Deader: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Sneaky Sneaky: delaying ;)

Cedrick brings his mace to bear against one of the spiders with a two handed swing.

Obisyth |
Round 1
Obisyth whispers a prayer to the powers of nature which causes a dark green glow to emanate from her club.
Standard Action: Cast Shillelagh
As a Retcon, could I have used my Alter Self ability (becoming Medium for a +2 to Strength) just before proceeding down the stairs. This is pretty much a standard battle preparation action for me, it has just been a while since we fought and I had forgotten about it while on vacation.
Joneth Revane |
Finding himself facing a pair of rather large spiders, Joneth almost casually flicks his wrist and, seemingly at the same time, a dagger appears in his right hand. The tiefling takes a moment to appreciate the familiar feel of the weapon's hilt in his grasp and stands ready to plunge it in the nearest creature's flesh.
Round 0 (Surprise Round)
Immediate action to draw the dagger from its spring loaded wrist sheath.
Just in case Joneth is still eligible for a standard action, here is the attack, along with sneak attack damage; if that is not the case, simply disregard the following action.
Melee attack (dagger) 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21 [Critical Threat]
Damage (piercing) 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Sneak attack 1d8 ⇒ 7
Melee attack (dagger) 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15 [Critical Hit Confirmation]
Damage (piercing) 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
DM - Voice of the Voiceless |
Obisyth - use of Alter Self retcon is permitted... but each time that you use it, I'm going to require you to do a small fluff description of exactly what changes (as in do you take on more Oni like features, etc). If you want the mechanical benefit of the + to Strength, I'd like to see tangible appearance changes.
Nachni still has an surprise round action remaining...
The spiders leap from the ladder at Joneth and Cedrick, attempting to find flesh with their fangs...
Bite on Joneth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23 for 1 non-lethal and poison DC10
Bite on Cedrick: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17 for 1 non-lethal and poison DC10
...their bites painful and irritating as poison begins to flow through your veins.
Joneth's instinctual thrust with his dagger is true and splits the abdomen of one of the fist sized arachnids in two.
Deader looks askance at the other spider, and it seems to scuttle away from you so perhaps you made some impact upon it... at least for a few moments before the thought is rendered moot as the creature explodes in a spray of ichor and death under Cedrick's mace.
Obisyth calls an enchantment upon her club as your eyes scan the dark.

"Suppose the Swabbie must have disturbed a nest of these spiders, must be nearby"

RETCON
Just before heading down into the bilge, you see Obisyth close her eyes and take a deep breath. Then her form begins to swell and grow larger. From a frail 5 feet tall and 85 pounds, her form swell to over six feet with muscling that appears more like that of a male gladiator than a woman. You also see the strange eye shaped scar on her forehead become more like an actual eye and small fangs grow down from her mouth.
She then smiles as she begins the descent into the bilges.
Time to have some fun boys.
____________
Swift Action: Hawkeye - +1 on Perception for 1 round
Perception: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 1 = 9
Obisyth continues to scan the area. Unfortunately in her new taller and more muscular form, she ends up staring at a knot on one of the beams and completely misses everything else.
Joneth Revane |
"Magpie? The one they killed our first night here?" The question is asked in an almost absent-minded way as Joneth is more focused on trying to scan his surroundings for more hostile creatures, ichor-covered dagger held firmly in his hand.
Round 1
Fortitude 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Seeing as how Joneth's Perception modifier is a +5, there is not much point in rolling (even with a 20, I get a total result of 25).
DM - Voice of the Voiceless |
Seeing no reason yet to descend, Nachni remains at the head of the ladder. However as you look to the cobwebs wary of the threat of spiders... a thrashing at your ankles draws your eyes.
Rats the size of small dogs launch out of the brackish and filthy water to try and gnaw upon your legs...

For clarity - the space in the bilges is fairly confined and the rats are currently coming from both the bow and stern. Best you could do is catch two of them only.
Map would make it easier I know, but I'm still at work - just throwing it out there if it would change Deader's action.
Obisyth miss chance: 1d10 ⇒ 3 Ooooh - just made it
Obisyth's enchanted club drives into the water hard and despite almost misjudging the rat's position - contact is made and the rat's back and spine is collapsed into it's chest.
Cedrick's swing is slightly off target and the rat escapes the blow.

Joneth winces as the creature's teeth find their mark, but quickly moves to strike back with a stabbing attack. Nevertheless, whether from the pain or due to the rat being too quick, he misses his foe.

In a tone that seemed very unsuited to the disgusting conditions and the danger they were in, Deader tisked and said "You're, uh, Obisyth, right? I think you're going to want to back up..."
Delay action for Obysith to 5' back away from the rats, then Deader will also move to F3 and drop a web, hitting rows BCD and E.
DM - Voice of the Voiceless |
The rat killed by Obisyth was already removed. And since she hadn't taken the 5ft I'm happy to retcon that in.
Obisyth hears the words of the walking corpse and managed to just duck out of the way before one side of the bilges gets choked up with ropey threads of webbing...

Not sure which square I am in, but I assume that I can swing at one of the two fighting Joneth/Cedrick.

How something that lives in a place as disgusting as this survives is always a wonder.
Joneth Revane |
As the rat's bite finds its target again, Joneth clenches his teeth and moves away from the magical webs, limping as he does so. Trying to ignore the burning sensation that accompanies his wound this time, he stabs at the closest creature once more with his dagger.
Round 3 (I think...)
Attacking the nearest rat.

DM - Voice of the Voiceless |
Aye - should be Round 3...
Obisyth obliterates another of the vermin with a mighty stroke. Joneth and Cedrick take advantage of the extra space to flank the remaining un-webbed rat. This does not help Cedrick, whose blow is ill-aimed, but it does allow Joneth a chance to better aim his blow...
Sneak Attack: 1d8 ⇒ 8

As a note, Web is a 20' Radius, not a 20' diameter. The web should be twice its size and even if focused at the front of the boat it will likely get me and Deader. It is a low level spell that really covers a broad area - great for completely sealing off a road or alleyway.
DM - Voice of the Voiceless |
Deader's strike is wide, and he takes the time to step back from the rats ensnared by the recently appeared mass of rusted and insubstantial chains.

Round 4
Obisyth turns around and looks down at the rat caught in the chains.
You chose the wrong ship my little soon to be dead friend.
With that she once again raises her greenish club over her head and smashes it down at the rat.
Attack-2 handed: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 4 + 1 = 16
Damage: 2d6 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (3, 3) + 6 + 1 = 13
Once again she feels her club strike true and you can see a small smile appear on her usually stoic face as the rat's life force is crushed out of existence.
She then looks over at Deader - Am I going to get stuck if I go after that last one? Or do we have to wait for the chains to disappear?
