Press-ganged to serve aboard the Wormwood, the crew with the outsider's touch must struggle to stay alive long enough to sate their desire for revenge...

Numbers I'll get to soonish. I've been trying to hint, but I suppose I'll put it outright.
The crew is not comfortable with the undead wandering around freely... especially since they're still covered in blood of some of their ex-crewmates. Do you:
1) Ignore that lack of ease.
2) Say something to address it?

Obisyth - you've not got any of the craft skills that would be needed to properly repair a ship for starters. And I wouldn't be keen on letting that be solved just by levelling up.
Warp Wood is definitely useless as it breaks items.
Wood Shape doesn't affect enough volume to repair the ship properly - as a repair to the hull would need to be able to affect the entire hull, not just a plank at a time.

As crew members begin to eye each other warily... unsure of exactly who wants to be first to make a mark, Sandara rolls her eyes and takes up the pen.

Kroop wanders close to Cedrick "Can I have a word?" pulling him to one side before continuing "Sure'n ye can't be lookin tae put into the first fresh port Cedrick?... If ye haven't noticed we're in pirate territory and none too seaworthy. Buggers'll see us comin and take us quick like... that and soon as Harrigan gets word... and he will... we need to be scarce or at least a bit harder tae find."

Rubbing his stubbled jaw "There's a place down South, out of the way like... Piece o' crap man that runs it, but one of the few places we could go. Rickety Squibs I think it's called... mans got some talent re-skinnin boats an the like. Then mebbe we could cruise less hot waters a bit till we've a name... then when we come back the buggers'd be less likely tae feck wi' us?"

The tiefling rogue takes a look at the assorted loot, but seems to show no particular interest, instead turning his gaze towards the various crew members.

Taking note of the crew's unease and the looks they give Deader's "friends", Joneth moves a little closer to the strange man, leaning in to talk softly to him. "Could you perhaps do something about your... companions? Our new crew seems to be a bit uncomfortable being so close to..." He pauses, then continues. "You know, basically creatures that are not only all that human-looking, but also happen to be quite dead."

Nachni joins Deader and Joneth while Cedrick is speaking with Kroop, "Or perhaps we encourage them by explaining how Deader's friends are going to help make them the most feared and wealthy crew in the Shackles. After all, we're already going to have quite the reputation with the lot of us as its leaders. We may as well finish the picture."
VoV, will you allow me to use Bluff or better still Perform (act) to convince them? Or is this going to require Diplomacy. I know earlier on we were able to use other social skills to influence, but not if that is still kosher. And as everyone has noted, Diplomacy is not exactly Nachni's strong point currently.

Joneth thinks on Nachni's words for a moment, then smiles. "Or that, yes."

Minor Crab-beast

Nachni - you can of course... they're a little more concerned with having them free-roaming and potentially out of control... especially given Deader has never given anyone an impression of being a calm and rational individual :P
Perhaps some way of assuring them that they won't get gnawed on while they sleep?

Kroop nods "Aye sir, a fair call... and should set the crew feelin a bit better aside." before looking towards Deader... who seems to have something to say...

Web 1/1

Deader looked surprised after Jonath whispered to him, as if considering something he'd never really thought about before. He looked at the crew one by one and thought for a few moments as Kroop spoke to Cedrick.

Deader didn't give much thought to things like basic human emotions or the distinctions between life and death. He was a difficult person to understand. What he was, though, was a sailor. He understood sailing on the same level that most people understood their own name and who they were. Deader didn't have a name. He didn't even really know who he was. Instead he knew sailing.

Sailors were the people who existed between.

The only thing that a sailor needed was a vessel to hold them up between the sky and the deeps, and a crew to tame the skies and seas with. With those two things a sailor could weather anything.

Deader didn't really understand people, but suddenly he remembered all he needed to about the importance of a good crew.

Finally Deader walked over to the sailor with the Bosun's whistle around their neck and slowly and carefully took it. Then he put it to his lips and sounded a shrill muster.

Bosun's whistles make only two notes. How in the world Deader managed to sound his muster in a distinctly minor key was anyone's guess.

Moments later the three undead monstrosities rushed out of the hold dripping with blood and bilgewater to toe (or tentacle) the line with the rest of the crew.

The trio didn't move a muscle.

Deader looked over the rest of the crew, his whole demeanor changing. The grin was gone. He shoulders squared. He pushed his stringy hair out of his face and looked at the line of sailors with his cloudy cataract eyes. There was no doubt that he was seeing every one of them, maybe even seeing them in ways no one ever had before.

"How many of you remember Magpie?" He asked. "Do you remember what happened to him? Do you remember why? Do you think he deserved it?"

"How many people that you called crew are fish food now? Do you remember their names?"

"How many get forgotten? How many of you think that might happen to you? Sound like a good fate?"

"I'll let you in on a secret. Just because you can't see something doesn't mean it isn't there. Magpie is still on the Wormwood. He's been with you the whole time. You couldn't see him. Some of you probably forgot about him."

"I didn't."

"I forget a lot of things, but I don't forget people. I don't forget my crew."

"When a sailor dies, we don't get buried with a headstone, or burned so our ashes can be scattered somewhere nice. We get dumped overboard. We spend our whole damn lives doing everything we can to stay on top of the water, and the moment our hearts stop beating, we're tossed in the drink. Then someone takes our place and we're never spoken of again. Desenea doesn't give a damn about dead sailors. She only barely gives a damn about the live ones. We fend for ourselves and then we die. In the end we have two choices. Haunt the seas or wander the Boneyard."

"We deserve better."

Deader pointed to the ghoul at the end of the line.

"This is us. This is the fate of all of us. And this is if we're lucky. He wasn't lost forever at the bottom of the sea. I found him locked in a cage underneath a cove. I don't know his name. I don't know what ship he served on, or who his friends were, or if he had a sweetheart. All I know is that he got sick, died, and was locked in a cage under a cove to rot. He's hungry and hates every last one of you because you're alive, and he isn't. At your absolute worst, you're still better off than he is."

"I gave him a chance to be a sailor again. He might die like any of us. Then again, he might last long enough for me to find out who he used to be. Long enough to give him back his dreams and his name."

"So from now until he dies again, or I do, he's a part of this crew, and he'll do the jobs that everyone hates. You're all in it for adventure and a share of the treasure. He's in it because he might get a chance to have something resembling a life again."

"He's a monster, but you've all served with monsters before. Look at him. You think he's any worse than Plugg or Scourge? If I let him, he'd eat you because he's sick and hungry, but he'd never whip the flesh off your back for fun. He'll never tell any of you what to do. In fact, while he's on board, you'll never have to muck the bilges, scrape barnacles, dump the captain's piss pot, or toss the galley waste. You get to be a sailor while he does the s%+! duties."

"And if you don't make it, if you end up like Magpie, you won't get dumped in the drink. If you're on my crew, you don't get forgotten. It just means you get bilge duty until I can figure out how to bring you back."

Cedrick laughs, "Let's not get too hasty! There's still plenty of piss pot cleaning, bilge mucking, and barnacle scraping for those dukes and duchesses aboard that don't figure they still need to pull their weight. The days of Plugg and Scourge are behind us, a slow limp down the coast is ahead, but there will be no galavanting about this ship as though it were a leisure cruise along the Inner-Sea, there are no first or second class passengers aboard, only honest hires earning an honest coin doing an honest days work. The coins will flow timely, the rum rationed properly, the discipline meted fairly, and the ship run efficiently"

Cue inspiring theme as the ship limps along through the waves.

The crew begin somewhat skeptical to Deader's overtures, clearly the potential for them to be made into a mockery of life when they die doesn't sink in too deep into their desires... but as he gets to the closing argument... he can see a few nods and mutters starting "...no more feckin bilges... piss on the bloody soapstones..." and the crew meanders away from disdain to a more unsteady uneasy acceptance.

At Cedrick's words thereafter the crew hops to and sets the ship to sailing... or more limping at this point given the damage suffered. By the time the sun's risen to it's height the ship is under sail and headed South and East - to land and the promise of a re-birth.

There is roughly two days at sail - any plans, or fast forward?

As they got underway Deader dismissed his crew back to the bilge. Cedrick seemed to be taking charge and everyone else seemed fine with that. That was good enough for Deader. He put the Bosun's whistle around his neck and said "I got some work t' do, Cap'n. I'll be down in the bilge if you need me."

After that, Deader took the night shift. His crew were quiet and obedient and kept away from the living sailors. Deader knew they were a long ways from accepting the undead as allies.

And they are far more pleasant than those who will join us later.

By the time Cedrick came out of his cabin in the mornings every knot inspected and tightened or replaced and the deck was swabbed spotless.

Then Deader disappeared into the Bilge again and didn't come out until the sun had set.

Deader has a project. :)

The skepticism was moreso on the faces of the couple of remaining ex-cronies... but pirate loyalty being what it is, probably not going to last.

A couple of days are spent easing the Promise down the shallows to Kroop's proposed destination. The crew seems well enough at ease after the change in leadership - especially with much of the backbreaking and sh1tty work taken away from them by the undead. They're far from at ease with the walking dead, but as long as they can keep their distance for the most times they seem well enough.

As Kroop imparts, Rickety’s Squibs lies in the estuary of a river on the Slithering Coast. The river mouth is concealed from passing ships by a protruding headland, so that it is difficult to find if one doesn’t know where to look, and the facilities are hidden under the eaves of the encroaching jungle, further warding them from prying eyes.

Late morning on the third day the Promise rounds a tall headland and reveals a hidden cove at the mouth of a wide jungle river, its sluggish brown waters staining the waters of the blue sea like an ugly bruise. A series of docks has been built upon this estuary, with buildings concealed beneath the overhanging limbs of the jungle beyond. A wooden watchtower stands upon the promontory of the headland, carefully concealed among the trees to provide a clandestine view of the seas.

As the Man’s Promise looms in plain view, a checkered flag of yellow and red is raised above the tower on the promontory, and an answering flag of blue is hoisted upon a yardarm at the docks ahead. A number of humanoid figures emerge from the shaded buildings and gather on a pier. A small, single-masted longboat soon sets out from the boathouse on the estuary to meet your ship upon the water.

As the longboat draws close enough for voice you hear a reedy voice cry "Permission to come aboard iffin ye like? Just weigh anchor and furl sail and we'll pull close." keen eyes will see that the man speaking is balding with grey hair and has a half-hunched look to him.

Deader mentally instructs his crew to throw a tarp over Son and hide inside his body.

"Cap'n, you may want to warn them about the body of the creature in the bilge. I have it wrapped up, but it might give them a scare none the less."

Deader had definitely changed over the last few days. Off duty he was his usual strange, carousing self, but on duty he was a completely different man. All business, with an accute attention to detail, especially regarding the ropes. He'd been good with them before. Now it was like they obeyed him.

Deader's shackleborn legacy manifests through ropes as well as chains. He has the "tail" race trait but he doesnt actually have one. Ropes near by just animate in small ways.

The Mwangi stays atop and silent, arms crossed and a dagger at his belt. Rickety himself is unarmed.

After looking to the hole, Hale covers the ship from fore to aft and has a good look o'er the side and up at the rigging. Clicking his tongue and scratching his head as he gets a measure for what might needs be done. A good twenty minutes passes before he sees to take Cedrick's ear again.

"Hole in the side's a bit ragged... but nothin that can't be fixed once ye get her on the sandbars. Now... what's the ship's name?" with an expectantly raised eyebrow clearly querying whether a mild repair is the end or merely the start of his services...

Cedrick lines the old crew up to recieve their payments.

"As per my word, two weeks pay at the correct rate for a skilled man, the ship is getting a refit and fresh articles will be made available to sign on to her going forwards. Every man here is settled in full and with equal pay for equal work. The ship will be very different soon, so consider your position carefully, and think on the benefits of signing on with a well run interest. I will nail my rules to the bulkhead shortly, if they aren't to your taste, then stay ashore. If you wish to reap the benefits of proper planning and a well run venture then be my guests. just remember, 'You are joining us, we aren't joining you'... any questions?"

The crew file past and accept their silver bits without complaint and Cedrick is almost shocked when a few of those that were friendly already give honest thanks. Both Kroop and Sandara especially smile and nod their support of the endeavor.

The only two who hesitate (but still take the coin of course) are the two surviving ex-cronies of your former overseers. Shadows of whispers at present... but something to be wary of.

I realise I'm yet to give final numbers and names - but my four day weekend was taken up with snotty sick kids, and I spent six hours in a line at Immigration today, so I've been lacking time ;)

The Ex-Promise is brought in to dry dock and left betwixt twin walls of wood for the tide to retreat and beach it upon the sandbars. Your crew is set to helping Rickety's boys secure the ship with rope and tackle to make sure it stays mostly upright in the process.

It is then that you're left feeling something you've not in a while - freedom. You're ashore with naught but your own devices to be looked to... and from the looks of it, a half decent taverna off to one side of the camp.

Time for some interpersonal conversation and purchasings. Unless there's nothing to discuss that is :P

I'm assuming there's a general supply store? Can we do some shopping?

So are we doing a "shopping montage" and then picking up in the pub? How are we framing this scene?

Fish generally sticks close to Obisyth and does whatever she does. Aside from purchasing some general spell components and a few containers to store things in, Fish is mostly interested in seeing if anyone has any slaves to sell, particularly any that are weak, sickly, or otherwise undesirable for some reason. Also pearls.

Captain! Please deduct 500gp from Fish's account. She's keeping the harp.

LOL all good, then Fish would be given 126gp and the harp instead. The good news is that we are now all on parity for loot allocation

Shopping via Montage, shopping interplay sucks unless there is a need to build a lasting relationship :p

Cedrick will go shopping, and no doubt to the tavern... he will also need a postal service :p

Fish's talk of slaves and slavery draws a fierce condemnation from the local townsfolk. All here are free-men, and consider slavery anathema.

Impetus for engagement in your hands - or if there is no need for talking / discussions I can progress plot.

Deader took his time wandering the small island frequenting many of the shops. Free from his shipboard responsibilities he'd reverted back to his grinning, warped personality but even in the fits of his strange songs and frequent giggles he seemed more lucid now than his friends had come to expect from him.

First he visited a tailor's shop and returned with a new pair of boots and trousers of very high quality, and a starched white shirt that positively abounded with ruffles. Then he discovered a wine merchant and arranged to have a crate of his latest batch delivered to the Retribution. He stopped at a barber's shop, a cartographer's office, a blacksmith's kiosk, the general store, and a half-dozen street merchants.

Those in his company found the experience to be much like following an excited child around a carnival.

By the time they retired to the pub, Deader was hundreds of gold pieces less wealthy and looked like a new man. Somewhere he'd found a sturdy goblet carved from the shell of some kind of sea creature and was in the process of flagging down a serving girl for his third refill.

"So what's our agenda, Cap'n? We're going to be drydocked here for a while, and we can't spend the whole time carousing or helping patch the hull. What's our heading?"

While the Taverna looks enticing, Obi recalls that the last tavern she spent time in a tavern resulted in her being drugged and dragged onto a pirate ship, not that things did not turn out well, but it is not something she would wish to repeat.

Obi will spend time on the outskirts of the village watching the sea birds, fish and other flora and fauna that are native with the area. She also sends Shadow out to hunt to his heart's delight, while also watching for any sign that the old pirate ship might be searching for them.

Obi usually has Fish with her to explore the wild and see what is about.

I am out of funds, so no real purchases for me. The cutlass and amulet pretty much tapped out my wealth.

Cedrick sits down with Ink and Quill...

Cedricks Letter wrote:

Sir,

It is with heavy heart and deep regret that I write to you to inform you of the fate that has befallen me in service to His Majesty Prince Stavian aboard his vessel 'Indisputable'.

Whilst the captured prize ship 'Scummy Sally' had docked via subterfuge in an unfriendly port, Port Peril, for necessary hasty repairs and supplies, I was pressed into the service of a Pirate by the name of Captain Barnabus Harrigan aboard 'The Wormwood', whereupon I was pressed to hard labour and worse.

I accept that ultimately this reversal of fortune means that no doubt I should be excluded from the service I once held, and failing that tender what resignation I may, to avoid shame and disrepute being brought upon either party.

The only fortuitous part of the sorry story is that I have escaped to tell the tale, and am now aboard a new ship 'Revenge' and with it I shall do what I can to right the insult done to myself and the honour of Taldor. Though some may see us now as renegades and buccaneers, know that I only seek to punish still the enemies of Taldor, and any vessel flying the Taldane flag shall find succor in the shadow of our masts.

In the name of Prince Stavian III
Long live the Emperor.

MIDN. Cedrick Dragonne.
Indisputable

Cedrick pens a few copies, determined that his letter reaches Taldor.

"That is a true point Deader, that we will be here for a while and that we can't just spend it all at the tavern. That said, I believe some ears may need to go to the ground to hear of any stories of easy pickings or likely interests... I suppose we have a crew to feed and pay and that we are unlikely to find honest trade as a merchantman in these waters. I have a particular view to the running of the ship, the men will need to have a think about their futures too, but I intend for us to be a ship of some repute and renown, not a sailing circus, a new ship of fools. The men will have discipline, order, they will look like sailors - the ship will be the way we had them in service to the Emperor - Barnabus will not take away my dreams."

***

Cedrick has his eye on a wander in the forest too, something of a dark heart beating within it...calling him

Also going to buy some basics, armour, weapon etc... nothing too flash at this point

I'm curious, are the pirates in general against slavery, or is this town an exception?

Fish uses her ability to speak with animals to share anything interesting Shadow notices.
