Local lawkeeper would know Dejah being she was raised in town ... and wouldn't need to stop and question her... Maybe one gearsman ... suddenly appears in Torch?

Tabitha wrote:

On an ordinary day in Torch, our Wizard is figuring out how this strange non-magical, magical items work within Khonnir's Workshop. Tabitha is working on a metallic item on a counter, using various little picks and tools to see how it works.

"Is this how it goes? Tabitha is not sure.... Maybe cross this wire with this one? Tabitha really not sure, but lets try it anyway!"

Tabitha then reworks the wires within it, figuring out how it goes.

Disable Device with Tools+Trait: 1d20 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 6 + 3 = 22

Tabitha manages to rewire the device, causing it to start a loud beeping sound. The beeping start to go faster. Tabitha looks on in wonder and curiosity. "Hm, wonder what will now happen! Tabitha wants to find out."

The strange item goes from a loud beeping to a loud tone and bursts with a small fireball. Pushing Tabitha back and blowing out a nearby window. The counter she was working on has the scorched remains of the item, also leaving a scorch mark on the counter.

Tabitha is a little bit dazzled, and small bits of her smoking slightly. She coughs slightly and waves her hand in front of her face while she is sitting down on the floor where she landed. "Errr.... Maybe don't cross wires.... Oh... Khonnir is going to be upset with Tabitha." Tabitha winces as she stands up and surveys her surroundings. Noticing the window, Tabitha puts her hand on her face and sighs. "Oh... The window blew out too. He definitely won't like that. Well... Tabitha better start cleaning. At least make things cleared so no one steps on something sharp." Tabitha begins to clean up the workshop and trying to make it neat once again.

Wasn't sure if he had a workshop, but I think he has a small shack somewhere maybe?

As Tabitha starts cleaning the workshop up, she hears the pattering of feet behind her. Glancing behind her, she spies a familiar face--smudged in grease and dirt, clad in a plain shirt, pants and soot-stained smock, and her blonde hair frizzy and dripping with sweat, Val Baine steps out of the adjoining room.

"Uh... what was that beeping and popping I heard earlier? And why does it smell like burnt hair in here?" She asks, scratching her forehead in confusion.

This isn't my intro post--that'll be put up in the gameplay thread.

She watched as the very tall, robed figure drew closer to her hiding spot behind the house. Is that the man who bumped into me earlier? Least he had manners. She could no longer see the lone gearsman and Dejah waited a moment longer to ensure it wasn't going to double-back and find her, standing out in the open.

Dejah crawled out from her hiding place and dusted herself off before standing to her full height, which wasn't much in comparison to the stranger nearby.

Her voice was low but melodic as she addressed the robed man,

"I do not know if you have come to harm me or simply see to my welfare...I hope it is the latter." She paused a moment -- attempting to see past the quickening darkness and the man's hood. Dejah did not hide her scrutiny and waited for his answer before saying any more.

Cade was thrown off guard by the lady's directness. He was unaccustomed to people talking to him at all, much less in such a confident tone. His response was delayed even further as he got a good look at the girl's face. It was one of the most beautiful he had ever seen. He attempted to stutter out a couple of words before he saw the reflection of his own face in the girl's silver eye. The awareness of his scars so close to such beauty caused him to shrink even deeper into his hood. He reached out with his right hand to shake, but realized it was three times the size of the girl's and awkwardly brought it back to his side.

"Umm...yes...def...definitely the latter." He changed the focus of his eyes from her mismatched ones to her forehead. It helped him concentrate. "You looked like you could use some help. The only thing I hate worse that a skinjob is a metalhead. Are you OK?" He gave her a kind yet nervous smile from under his hood.

Tabitha is a bit startled and turns quickly when Val arrives to investigate the explosion. Oh! Val! Tabitha, um... Tabitha did an experiment and it did not go well? Erm... Learned not to cross wires at least... Hehe..." Tabitha looks at herself, dusts herself off, and then shrugs at Val. "The burning bit might be me."

Val blinks, then looks at the blown-out remains of the window. A few glass shards still lie on the windowsill.

"...right. Of course it was." The young Kellid walks over and looks at the remains of the 'experiment'. "Dad always told me never to cross wires--at best, they'll just short out. At worst... well, you've just seen it."

"Still, it's progress!" She bounces on her heels. "At least, it's more progress than I'm making right now..."

Viorec had observed the gearsman and its company and had moved out of the street assuming it was looking for him but when it took off after the young woman Viorec could only curse and follow to lend aid if it caught her. When he lost sight of the woman and the gearsman also appeared confused slowed and began to search. Viorec doubled back to find the young woman conversing with a man every bit as tall as Viorec himself if not taller but with the build of a tribesman warrior the lady appeared tense as she spoke to him. Uncertain of the mans intentions Viorec stepped in to the alley his hand resting comfortably at the pommel of his rapier. I am not certain if it concerns you but the gearsman is about a lane over and seems intently searching. It would be wise to go indoors before it catches site of you again.

Thank you for the compliments on the background. Funny enough Caedmon I was thinking of playing this character wielding an Earth Breaker. The only reason I didn't was because I found Cayden Cailean and his favored weapon was the rapier. Funny how things work out.

Skinjob? Metalhead is possibly the gearsman. His vocabulary was uncommon. Not from Torch, she silently catalogued in her mind.

"I am fine. I hid. It wouldn't have seen me. But thank you for your help."

Dejah pulled out the parcel she'd stuffed down her coat earlier, smoothed the bag and placed it under her arm, as before.

"You were brave. Not many people are." The following words were spoken softer, as if an afterthought.

"What is your name? I haven't seen you in town before. I am Dejah." She held out her right hand even after he had taken his back. She looked up at the hooded male, her mismatched eyes eager to learn his identity. She wondered why he was still covering his face, yet did not ask. He must have his reasons.

Dejah turned her head sharply in the direction of the other voice in the alley. Her pale brow furrowed slightly as she craned to see the second male -- almost as tall as the first and just as statuesquely imposing. This one shows his face. The eyes are dark, very dark in hue.

"Greetings, stranger. Best we keep our voices low, then. It is alone -- Never seen one in Torch before. It'll go once it does not find quarry. I hope. The Foundry Tavern is not far from here. Khonnir Baine has a workshop in the back. We can go there until we can return to our respective destinations."

"Come along," and with that Dejah turned and began walking the opposite direction to the gearsman and toward the Foundry as evening coloured the sky.

Tabitha frowns slightly about what Val said. "Tabitha could help you. Tabitha could learn with you. It would be fun, and maybe Tabitha doesn't get incinerated by accident." After Tabitha finishes speaking she tilts her head and sticks out her tongue playfully while shrugging again.

Tabitha begins to clean up again, before stopping for a second and turns to Val. "Um, would you like to help Tabitha clean up before Khonnir gets back? He would be awfully cross with Tabitha with what happened." Tabitha then looks around on the floor, picks up a slightly smoking metal piece and tosses it into a nearby box. "And Tabitha will help you with your project afterwards? Please." Tabitha grins.

Cade is relieved as the man interrupts his conversation with the young lady. He turns to meet him and is surprised to see someone close to his own height. "You are probably right."

Cade is shocked as he hears Dejah mention the wizard. Had she not heard of his disappearance? He nods. "Following you." He puts his hand on the gentleman's shoulder to allow him to go ahead. Cade gets a better look at the man and notices his unearthly good looks. A little bit of jealousy creeps into his mind as he compares his looks to his two "new friends". "Go ahead. I'll take up the rear in case the metalhead returns." As they move down the street, he ponders how different his life could have had it not been for the attack on his caravan as a young child.

"Cade", she said his name aloud and softly as if learning to feel of the sound upon her lips and ears. She noticed he did not want to crush her hand in his larger one and smiled in the deepening twilight.

As he stated he'd follow and defend the rear, Dejah nodded and continued to make her way to the workshop, not waiting to see if the other man would follow, too, yet feeling that he would.

It was not far at all to Baine's workshop. Dejah spied a light and voices coming from within. She noted the shattered window and tilted her head. Turning around to the tall males, she simply and quietly stated,

"You have a better vantage. Look inside, please," pointing to the broken window. (By the light coming from the workshop, both men can easily see that the nail on the pointed finger is long and looks sharp/hard. Like all the nails on her hands.)

Cade notices the lady's nails and gets a strange look on his face. That is different...mismatched eye color and long, sharp nails. The man knew there was something unusual about Dejah, but he could not put his finger on it. He did know that he liked the girl and surprisingly...he trusted her. Something about her strange differences from the "normal" inhabitants of Torch made him feel more comfortable around her. "I've got it."

He attempts to quietly move up to the window and peers inside. He clumsily crunches the glass shards as he approaches though. Is there glass in Golarian?

Viorec followed since they seemed to be no friend to the league. He was still uncertain if they would make good allies against them but for the moment they seemed to be of a like mind.

Once they reached the mentioned workshop Viorec read the tenseness in the woman as she observed the recently broken glass. When she called over the larger man calling him Cade, Viorec made note of it. As he peered in through the broken window Viorec stood watch for dangers outside.

His face is burned and scarred. He is human. He does not have a metal mask. The picture was for his face.

Cade steps away from the window and turns to Dejah and the other man. "It looks safe. There is a young lady in there, named Tabitha, who speaks of herself in the third person and has obviously never seen scars before." He opens the door and motions for the two to lead the way. Dejah can tell he is put out by being called a monster.

Dejah heard the girl's cry of monster and swiftly turned behind her to see if the gearsman had somehow edged forward when they weren't paying attention. Seeing nothing of the kind, Dejah turned back, perplexed, until she heard Cade's explanation.

"You are the monster? Or are we the monsters?" Dejah shook her head at the girl's impression and made a move inside the workshop; the door held open by the courteous Cade. Scars did not make a monster, nor nails, she mused silently.

As soon as Dejah stepped inside, the burnt smell still lingering in the air, her melodic voice cut through the confusion, "We are no monsters. Calm yourself, for we mean no harm."

Dejah waited until Cade moved into the workshop and then swiftly followed. She hoped the other male (she hadn't asked his name yet and he had given no introduction) would follow their lead.

"Thank you. And, I am serious. I only saw one this night. Yet, one is more than enough."

Dejah moved across the room, away from the door and the sounds of the gearsman in pursuit, outside. She gave a brief nod to the other girl in the room as she passed her.

Since the grease-marked, blonde girl had not given her name, although she seemed somewhat familiar, Dejah followed with, "May I ask your name?" The other one by the window was certainly Tabitha, the name Cade had heard from the window.

Wasn't sure if Dejah would know Val...Maybe in passing? Having seen her once when Dej and her father visited?

Yeah, I'd imagine Dejah would've seen her once. Not for long, though.

"Oh--yeah, it's Val. Val Baine." Val nods, and points at the brown-haired young woman tidying up what looks like a blackened, charred mass of metal parts. Some of the parts are still sparking. "That's Tabitha over there--she's the girl Dad's teaching how to use magic and build stuff."

Her voice drops to a whisper. "She's got a looooooooong way to go with building, if you ask me." She scratches her shining hair. "By the way, who are the rest of ya? Can't say I've seen either of you two boys around here before." She looks over at Caedmon and her eyes linger on Viorec. "And believe me, I'd remember ya from the way ya look."

She takes a shuddering breath to try and calm down. "In the meantime, I've been tinkering with something he brought back from his first trip. Gives me something to do while he's away."

Tabitha tilts her head slightly. "Well, since you all are here, you are looking to go to the Tavern?" Tabitha looks towards Val and smile again. "Shall we go to the Tavern then? I think we got most of it cleaned up in here, just gotta pin a bit of cloth to cover the window."

Tabitha will then finish tidying up and then look for a big enough piece of cloth to cover the window.

Val shakes her head. "Can't. Foundry's closed until Dad come's back."

"Or did you mean a different tavern?" She scratches her head again. "I really should go for a bath or something right now... this has been bugging me all day..."

Tabitha blinks a bit. "Ah, forgot about that. Sorry. Anyway, we should continue our conversation without an open window." Tabitha then wipes her hands on the front on her outfit. "We could go to another tavern if you like Val."

Can't wait till be begin our adventure together. :) It should be fun.

When she spoke, Dejah's voice was low/hushed,

"We came inside to get off the streets and away from the gearsman, who is still nearby. Leaving to go to a tavern is pure folly. What if it followed us, there?" Her question was directed at the one called Tabitha.

"I do not frequent taverns. If I am to leave here, then I shall return to my home, when it has gone." The Changeling's tone held a certain defiance and Dejah looked on the dark-haired girl as if she had suddenly gone mad for her ill-thought suggestion.

Dejah walked over to window, and from the side, furtively peered out into the darkness and listened carefully for the sounds of the gearsman.

Tabitha's eyes widen. "Its near here?! Um, help find a cloth or piece of wood to cover the window." Tabitha moves around the workshop to find something suitable. "And Tabitha did not mean any offense Dejah, but I rather that Val doesn't get drawn into this either." As she continues to find something that can cover the window.
Perception for something to cover the window: 1d20 ⇒ 18

Dejah turned from her place by the window and her mismatched eyes flitted to the tall Cade and paused for a heartbeat before falling back on Tabitha.

"Aye. That is why we sought refuge," she continued in low voice. "We do not seek to draw Val into trouble with the enforcer."

She watched now as Tabitha scoured the shop for canvas or dropcloth to cover the shattered window. Sighing, she left her position by the window, with a passing "Cade, keep an eye out for the gearsman" and assisted the girl in locating a big enough covering and then fixing it to the window.

Perception to aid: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 (+2 to Tabitha's perception for a total of 20)

The party finds a blanket to cover up the window with only a few seconds of searching. Just in time too--not a minute after the blanket is put up, a red light passes in front of it, heralded by *WHIRRING* and *clicking* of mechanical parts.

"Scanning." The light flares up for a few moments, its glow nearly penetrating the thick quilted cloth. A small *crunch* of broken glass causes the glow to look sharply at the ground. "Shattered glass. Environmental hazard. Logging."

The light blinks for a moment, then turns away. "Subject has eluded line of sight. Logging."

The *clanking* grows softer and softer as the gearsman leaves, before it fades completely into the distance. Val lets out a breath she didn't know she was holding.

"Whew... yeah, that was close." Val stretches before pinching the bridge of her nose. "Of course--suggesting that the tavern's closed as the biggest reason I can't go. Not the fact that I'm not old enough to drink yet, or that there's a Technic League gearsman on the loose."

Dejah had remained still as one of the older statues she had seen when the gearsman had neared the blanketed window and cast his scanner in search of her. She let out her breath once the enforcer had passed and she could no longer hear the whirring and such of its motion. It was fortunate only a solitary gearsman was out this night and she wondered at it silently a few moments longer. Why?

GM Ironcat, are we officially starting the game, today? I think you mentioned the 1st Sept (it's the 2nd, here. haha)?

When the gearsman scanned the window, Tabitha just froze. She wasn't sure what to do, and she only knew that those "metal men" are only used by the Technic League. When it passed, she slumped to the floor, sitting there. "Th-That was scary! Those things could be used for much good if it was not for the those idiots that control them." Tabitha takes deep breath and then sighs, trying to calm herself.

Yep--I'll make an introductory post soon.
