As the luncheon winds down the plates are cleared and the tankards are refilled. Raising his glass Alsern offers another toast to his saviors. "If not for you I certainly would be dead this morning, alas the gods sent you to keep me well. If you look under your seat I have a surprise for you." Hung by a golden cord to the underside of each of your chairs is a velvet pouch. A glance inside shows they are each filed with ten gold coins bearing the mark of Magnimar.

Aldern sits back in his seat with a content sigh and asks, "So are any of you familiar with the legend of Old Tusk? I had thought of hiring a guide to take me on a hunt tomorrow, but in light of the recent events I am not sure I could find one brave enough to venture out to the Tickwood forest." His eyes light up as an idea crosses his mind, "But you all are brave and fearless, I say you should all come with me. We can hunt that bugger together. What do you say?"

Baldric smirks at Zwain's generous offer then responds, "I can't speak for anyone else, but if you're hiring I'm interested in hearing your terms. I've never heard of 'old tusk' is it some kind of boar or a nasty old orc?"

Alden gives Zwain a puzzled look before answering Baldric, "Old Tusk is a legendary bore of gigantic size, some say he is a myth but others swear he lives deep in the Tickwood plaguing hunter and farmer alike. The going rate for a hired man these days is three silvers per day, I suppose I could spare that for each of you plus once we bring back Old Tusk you will be instant celebrates."

"That would depend on if we actually found Old Tusk specifically. If he's been searched for before with fail, then how will we know that it is him when we find a boar?" Satinder asks quizzically.

Vili's eyes go slightly wider as he peers into his pouch, "Lord Aldren, this is most generous of you. Thank you very much."

After losing himself in thought, "Boar? Bugs? Ah, a boar hunt, I would be glad to join you in your hunt. A chance to win a little good faith from the townsfolk could do about now...though if they react so poorly to us protecting the town from an invasion, killing one of their local legends might not win too many over...Well, let see shall we?"

"It also depends on whether he even exists in the first place," Gillian chuckles, her earlier interest in learning more about her new 'companions' temporarily forgotten. "To hear some of these farmers tell it, he's as big as a horse and can gut cattle with a single blow from his tusks. Safe to say, I'm a little skeptical. Most of the tales are probably just that - tales, told by men deep in their cups," she smirks. "But it makes for a good story and sometimes that's enough," she adds with a shrug. "And story or not, I can't say that I've been on a boar hunt before. I'll join too, if you'll have me. It might be good to get away from Sandpoint and the Rusty Dragon for a day or two."

Not to mention Ameiko might appreciate me being scarce for a bit, all things considered...

male Human, Slayer 1

"Well, I'm skeptical about how this lot will respond... they seem as likely to string us up for killing their beloved beast as they do to celebrate a successful hunt... and I can't say I'm excited about putting my prestigious education to work earning a dumb grunt's day wage..." Baldric says aloud instead of merely thinking as would be more appropriate, "but I like you, Aldern, and I'm not in a hurry to loiter in Sandpoint, so you can count me in as well."

"Ah excellent, I will have everything prepared so we can leave at dawn tomorrow." With that the lord says his farewells and retires to his room upstairs leaving you all in the common dinning area alone.

Satinder slights narrows his eyes at the "not heroes" comment, but brushes it off quickly. "Well it is quite simple for me really. My older brother and sister are currently aiding in the efforts to protect Nybor from the goblin plague down there. And now that I am old enough, I decided to come here as I had heard that Sandpoint was in need of assistance against the goblin plague up here. It would seem that I was indeed correct in my coming of here. Although I would have preferred a better start in the community than what occurred last night..."

"I too have considered giving up my specialities to assist with the goblin plague. Nasty business really. Goblins coughing up blood and vomiting on themeselves. Someone must end this atrocity before the plague mutates and affects all sorts of other harmless opera lovers.". Zwain shrugs apologetically and continues,

"My fans will be devastated, but the needs of the goblins come before my own selfish desires."

Even though part of her knows she probably shouldn't, Gillian can't resist winding the crazy wizard up by playing along with his odd ramblings from time to time. "That's very noble of you Zwain," she says, lips twitching as she tries to maintain a serious expression. "We'll have to act quickly though; you know that after the blood and the vomiting comes other digestive woes - and no one deserves that." Her expression then shifts to one of slight puzzlement as she regards Satinder. "How do things fare in Nybor? I'm surprised you decided to journey here to Sandpoint instead of aid your brother and sister in their efforts." Her tone here isn't accusatory, merely curious.

"They are faring well. It is still very much a tolerating town as compared to other places. Although I must say that it is a little different coming here and not seeing as many half elves here than I see at home. A bit of a culture difference I would suppose you could say." Satinder responds towards Gillian. "It was not exactly as if I had fans or a business that I left behind much like Zwain here. It was more of a family discussion on life. My brother and sister thought it best that I see the rest of Varisia, and possibly more of this world before I decide to stay in just one area. It is not as if I can not return home though. I believe that if I never returned, my little sisters would be devastated. But I do agree with my older siblings that I should see more than just Nybor, to get a sense of how this world works."

"No, you certainly won't see a great many like us here in Sandpoint," Gillian chuckles, indicating her slightly-pointed ears. "Not as locals, anyway. There's always a trickle of more colorful folk that pass through, but they rarely stop to put down roots." Once Satinder finishes the rest of his explanation, she nods. "Makes sense I suppose. It's a little more unusual around here for someone's family to encourage them to leave home like that. Oh, a lot of people do end up going as far as Magnimar at one point or another, but beyond that, parents seem to prefer their children settle down close to home." Her expression darkens slightly. "Of course my father's wife who you had the pleasure of meeting earlier is an exception to the rule; she'd be more than happy to see me leave here."

The afternoon is spent strolling about town, avoiding the stares and the whispers. The crowd at the Rusty Dragon is again not sympathetic to your presence and with the need to rest before the hunt you each retire early.

Let me know if there are any specific stops, purchases, or anything else you want to do before leaving in the morning. We can take care of them off camera so to speak.

Before dawn you arise, grab a quick bite of fresh baked bread and assorted fruit from Bethanna in the kitchen and then head out to meet Lord Foxglove. You find him at the Goblin Squash stables checking the straps on a pack mule loaded with tents, bags of rations, and assorted camping gear. He is dressed in clothes more suited to a stroll through one of Magnimars gardens then the Tickwood forest but he is excited you all have arrived. Once everyone is ready you start the long walk out the north gate of Sandpoint and head up the Lost Coast Road.

Conversation passes between you about the local flora and fauna, the recent goblin troubles, and the fact that the towns reception of your heroics was less then celebratory. Eventually you head into the forest proper scouting for boar tracks in hopes of finding the legendary Old Tusk. The first day finds nothing, and you set camp with enough tents for everyone to have their own. Rations are shared and the next day brings another unsuccessful hunt. Despite protests, Aldern is eager to give it one more day before heading back to Sandpoint.

On the third day, Satinder finds a trail. A boars trail and it seems to be an exceptional sized boar based on the size of the print. Following the trail it leaves to a cave entrance covered with vines and obscured by thick thorn bushes. It is late afternoon.

Way back at the tavernVili clears his throat, "Well, I just happened to be in town for the festivities. My life has been spent traveling the countryside...of many countries, seeing what life has to offer from many lands. Your siblings were correct Satinder. I firmly feel you should see what the wide world has to offer before settling down...if that urge should ever strike you. My troupe is a traveling group of entertainers, menders, merchants and tradesmen. We stop at villages and offer our services, until we decide it is time to move on, and then we do. In my troupe, I have been somewhat of an outsider. I have not the gracefulness of the dancers, my fingers do not play instruments well, and I have never been much into "fixing" things. Exploring the world and telling stories of our past has been my role...along with tending of the animals and manual work around our troupe. It has definitely been an experience meeting all of you."

Meanwhile, back at the cave...Vili grips his spear a little tighter. "What do you see Satinder?", Vili asks in hushed tones while glancing around.

Luncheon Flashback

Gillian smiles at Vili's words. "Somehow I doubt that your troupe thinks of you as an outsider, especially not if all of your stories are as good as the one you told last night! You'll have to tell us more about your troupe and your travels with them."

Satisfied with what she's learned of everyone so far, she leans back in her chair. "Fair is fair, I'll tell you about myself, though there's not much to start with. Like I mentioned yesterday, I'm a waitress over at Ameiko's place, the Rusty Dragon. Besides that, I've been known to moonlight as an entertainer there - mostly singing, but sometimes I switch things up and play the fiddle, to keep it interesting. As for the rest...well, Sandpoint's my home, always has been. In spite of some awkward family history, it's been a pretty good life here."

Present

Seeing the others drawing their weapons, Gillian does the same. Longsword in hand, she peers curiously over the shoulders of the others. "It's about time we found something of interest out here," she whispers.

Cave Map

Satinder leads the way into the hillside. The natural tunnel goes thirty feet then takes a gentle bend to the left for another thirty feet. Alden hesitates and says, "Um, I think you all should press on and I will stay here and make sure we are not followed in." The tunnel stretches another fifty feet and slopes slightly down to a very narrow part of the passage. Beyond Satinder can see the tunnel widens at a T-intersection.

Satinder:
You can hear the sound of movement coming from the southern passage

The section of tunnel in the areas AD45 & AD46 are extremely tight and require 15 feet of a medium characters moment to travel the 5 foot distance. This is to account for the need to adjust body and gear to move between the extremely close walls. Characters can not pass through another character occupying either of these two spaces.

"Well, if you're sure," Gillian says with a shrug. "As long as you've got something to defend yourself with if something comes along behind us."

Though she can't get a truly good look at the path ahead due to being at the back of the group, she can tell that it looks like it'll take some maneuvering to get through. "Tight squeeze, eh? Guess we'd better suck it in if we want to keep going!"

"A tight squeeze for sure. Stay apart just in case..." Satinder says as he begins to move forward. "The last thing I am sure we want is to be buried all together."

Move to AD44 and make a perception check at the intersection.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Satinder squeezes through the narrow end of the tunnel. On the other side the northward passage forks into two. The southern side opens to a large natural cavern. Satinder sees a large boar at the far wall. It grunts, stomps a hove, and attacks.

Not using a surprise round since both Satinder and the boar are aware of each other.

INT Rolls:

boar: 1d20 ⇒ 15
Satinder: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Baldric: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Satinder charges across the chamber, and slashes the boar. Blood spills as it bellows a painful squeal. Up close Satinder realizes this boar is larger than any he has ever seen. Lowering its head, it thursts its long tusks hard into Satinder's gut.

Gore vs Satinder: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20 Damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

Map Update

Combat Note:
Note for those who just joined us about combat. I post a resolution to all the actions at one time. Vili is up next but anyone who acts before the boar acts again is free to go ahead and post their action, unless you want to see what someone ahead of you chooses to do first. I will then post the outcome of all the actions in the correct INT order. This way we aren't slowed down by RL posting delays. You are also free to note a contingency in your post. For example: "I will attack the monster with my staff unless charter X moves out of range, then I would instead cast my fire ball spell" Please just don't go beyond one rounds worth of actions. For a single creature combat like this one I will typical make the DM post once I have all the actions so Satinder is free to go ahead and post his round 2 action. If time permits I might pop on and post a resolution of two or three character especially if I think the outcome might be important to the other characters. I will post Map Updates fairly often so everyone can see where everyone else is without having to keep rereading post to check coordinates. Let me know if you have any question. Thanks.

The above adjustment accounts for the diagonal to enter the first square. The path through will be spaces AC47, AD46, AD45, AD44. Also if you end movement in one of the two squares with not enough movement to pass all the way through, it will cost the full 15ft of movement on the next round. So going all the way though on one double move is optional.

Vili will have to use the double move to get to the other side from where he is at so he can not cast the spell this round. Otherwise he gets stopped in AD45

"Good job, Satinder!" Gillian calls, sounding impressed. Having enough sense to at least let Baldric and Vili move forward to render their aid, she begins humming a jaunty little tune that seems to bolster the spirits of everyone within earshot - even though this might otherwise seem like an odd time and place for music.

Inspire Courage!

male Human, Slayer 1

Sorry, I wasn't trying to cause problems for anyone... Just trying to avoid any confusion or need to retcon anything... If Gillian had decided to stop in the narrow area, or tried to move through and discovered she didn't have enough movement, you wouldn't have been able to take your declared action because you'd have been stuck behind her...

Baldric tries to stay with Satinder but gets caught up in the narrow passage as he rushes off to meet the boar, and ends up having to watch as all his companion's rush past him. When he finally frees himself to follow, he moves as far as he can to close with the boar.
Double move through the narrow pass and as close to the boar as possible based on where everyone else is positioned
