The Sandpoint Swallowtail festival so far had been a big success, great food, fun games, and amazing entertainers were everywhere. The air is filled with excitement and cheer unlike any the town had seen in a very long time. Today the new Cathedral stood as a symbol of hope, not a reminder of tragedy. Conversations today were about the future and not about the late unpleasantness. Among the local residents, outlying farmers, traveling merchants and wandering Varisian’s a small group of adventures were unaware that Fortune was guiding them to find each other….

This is a continuation of the RotRL Campaign originally started HERE

Vikh the Bloodboiler:

You have been enjoying the festivities in Sandpoint, occasionally your Shoanti garb gets a wry look but for the most part you feel welcome in town.

One thing you do notice is the Shoanti sheriff, Belor Hemlock. You study him closely for tattoos or any other indication of what Quah he was from, but are unable to tell. It is obvious by his name and his garb that he has let go of his traditional heritage, and the long cloak and livery of his office cover his skin enough to hide the customary Shoanti markings.

After stuffing the last third of a lemon tart in your mouth, as Zantus' speech comes to an end, you deftly move around the crowd to the sultry strawberry-blonde beauty who was leaning against a lamppost.

“Vikh’s the name, and though you're a business woman I want to make your experience as pleasurable as you've ever had. Shall we take a walk and find some…privacy?” Her slight smile indicates she is interested and after agreeing on a fair fee, she escorts you back to the Pixie’s Kitten for an afternoon of delight. As you dress to leave she gives you back a few coins, ”It was indeed pleasurable, be certain to ask for me agai, just ask for Ferrah any time.” She gives you a sweet wing as you leave.

Out in the streets again gain the rapt attention of the crowd and delve into an oration of excitement and adventure! Of blood and glory! Of hags and wayward children, of armored knights and fiery dragons! In conclusion he proclaims [/b]“I’m here all week! Look for me in your favorite inn![/b] A few coins fall at your feet, enough to cover the cost of spending time in Ferrah’s arms.

Eventually you happen upon the Lighthouse Smash game. Your first inclination was to save your coin but wanting to try his aim, decided to give it a go. The catapult contraption, was awkward in your native hands and the onlookers chuckle as you disastrously miss on your first attempt. A second fling, brings more laughter and even some bemused heckling. Growling you let a third shot fly…SMASH! The toy tower falls and you are reward with a sewn doll made to look like a flying dragon.

Eventually you find yourself on the cathedral steps, making some new friends….

Rhiannon Unwin:

It has been an amazing day, working for the society and your are certain the Venture Captain is going to love all the information you are recording for them…for history! What a wonderful fate to meet a skilled armed fellow to help protect you from the pressing crowds…and introduce you to ale, mmmm.

When finished with the first ale you go back for another. “From the awful odor I would have thought it tasted worse. Never really went near pubs because they were rowdy and smelled bad…”

Soon you are at the cathedral, only slightly tipsy from the drinks. you lays a sheet of coarse paper across the glossy text, aligning it perfectly before using a stubby piece of charcoal to capture the words. Then you tuck this paper into the front of her journal with a silky cloth over it to protect it.

As you finish you find yourself not only meeting Baldric, but as fortune would have it several others. You try for another swig of ale from your recently filled canteen, but find it barren. Shaking it upside down with the cap off and not even the smallest drop falls free. "S$!~," you mutter.

Zwain the Insane:

What an interesting day, unlike any you have had yet on your visit. When the chance arises you immediately, break into an impromptu operatic piece, right there in the crowd, sung in Dwarven and grossly off-key. You get a few of those kinds of looks, but you are used to that. Most just laugh your performance off, and one voice yells out in Dwarven, ”Back at your arse! As the day passes on towards late afternoon you find yourself at the cathedral, the day’s main focus, taking to some interesting new…friends?

Baldric Moore:

It couldn’t be a better venture in Sandpoint, already employed with ale to boot. Certainly you are earning your way, having to keep these new companions you have met out of trouble when you hustle back to the beer stand. “Hey, they're waiting for your performance on the cathedral stairs. Don't leave them waiting too long.” The well placed lie keeping the tensions from boiling over.

As you reach the stand, you pull a few coins from a coin pouch and hand them to the barkeep. With in a few moment you are able to turn back toward the temple a few coins lighter but apparently having smoothed everything out.

As the Swallowtail release comes closer you find yourself on the front stairs of the cathedral, with a friendly new employer and as fortune smiles perhaps some new friends…

Travok Shortstrider:

The day is a wonderful day to explore, smell stone and marvel at the work of the new cathedral. You are certainly glad you left Janderhoff for this…this is a day for making memories. As the day passes you become acutely aware this is not your dwarven home land.

After watching other people eat pies for far too long, you move on feeling a little bit disgusted. You can only watch people gorge themselves on food for so long before you realize how debauched it all seems, you think. After wandering around for a while you spot a group of curious-looking humans inspecting the cathedral. The butterfly-event should only be moments away so you decide to pass the time with some small-talk. Fortune smiles on you again as they seem eager to get to know you as well.

Satinder Coric:

Finding your way to the Rusty Dragon sponsored food booth was easy and soon you are approaching the woman your brother described. She was easy to find. Trying your best to sound confident you speak up “Excuse me, Miss Ameiko? I don't know if you remember him, but my older brother is Kyras Coric. He said that you would be best to speak to about finding out how to assist against the goblin raids in the surrounding areas. Is he correct?”

Ameiko looked up from the table of food in front of her and pushes the hair back from her eyes. “Ah, Kyras. I do remember him. You're his brother, eh?” she says, before being interrupted by a request for a plate. “Well welcome to Sandpoint. You picked the best time to come - unfortunately, I'm a little busy at the moment. If you're interested in helping with the goblins, I suggest you go talk to old Daverin Hosk over there. He can square you away.” She points with a sausage-skewered fork towards a stall in the middle of the square, manned by an older, bald human.

“Thank you ma'am. I appreciate the help!” Walking through the lively crowd as everyone around you seems in a care free mood, you keep a smile on your face. Finally making it through the crowd, you approach Hosk, "Excuse me, Mr. Hosk? Do you have a moment to spare? I was hoping to offer my assistance towards dealing with the goblin raids in the area and was told that you're the person to speak to about that.”

The retired adventure gives you a startled look, ”Yer after goblins are ya? Well you shan't find any in Sandpoint lad. Ya need to be out in the Hinterlands to be hunting goblins. Relax son, enjoy the festival..They are gonna be setting the Swallowtails free soon and ya are not gonna want to miss that. Celebrate today, on the marrow you can come by mi Goblin Squash stables and I tell you about how I killed that nasty Bonegrinder Chief Whartus. He gives you a friendly pat on the back as he moves on through the crowds.

The crowds around the plaza in front of the cathedral are growing thicker as it gets closer to the Swallow Tail release.

Please go ahead and pick up where you left off, once we have a post from all the characters I will jump us right into some action. (insert evil DM laugh) Usually when I use a spoiler it is only for the names listed, then it's up to the character to share that info in game, or give permission for other player(s) to view it also. Today I am using the spoilers just to cut down the wall of text. Please feel free to open and read them all in this post.

"Don't worry, you can fill it up again after they release the butterflies," Baldric tells Rhia with a chuckle as she tries to shake one more drop of ale from her canteen. "And, speaking of which," he continues still addressing Rhia but really speaking to everyone, "since you're not interested in a tour, and Travok here isn't a mason, we should go find a good place to watch the ceremony from."

With nothing more pressing on his mind, Vikh decides to tag along with these folks for the time being. They at least seemed to know their way around this town.

Satinder smiles at the man and nods his head. "Thank you sir, I'll come by the stables tomorrow for sure. I'll take your advice as of now and enjoy the festival." Walking away, he once again takes in the sights and sounds of the Swallowtail festival, as the smell of different foods entice his nostrils from different directions. Eventually he finds a spot in which he figures that he would be able to see the butterfly release the best, and takes a seat nearby biding his time until they release.

In response to Baldric, Travok says "Now that is a great idea. I've been up here for hours already and I think I found quite the spot to view it all from. Right over here!" The small dwarf leads the group of humans towards the middle of the square but towards the front of the group starting to assemble. "If you'd like to stand further back that's all right by me, but y'll understand I have to stand here or I won't be able to see a thing."

A look of interested curiosity adorns Vikh's face.

"Why should I be ashamed, Zwain?" Baldric teases, "I'm not going to be swallowing my tail!"

As the dwarf draws to a halt, Baldric surveys their location... not bad- good view, upwind from the privies, close to the barstands... "A fine selection, Travok," he answers the dwarf with a laugh, "though I bet the women behind us are less thrilled about it."

The crowds are pressing closer to the presentation stage when they see Father Zantus take the stage again. Several porters set a dozen crates on the edge of stage and the head priest surveys the crowd. The porters attach a long pool to the crate lids and then connect them to a handle that is placed in Zantus' hand. The moment of the Swallowtail release is close at hand.

Map of the Plaza in front of the Cathedral

I placed each of you on the map, let me know if this fits where you think you would be for the swallow tail release. If you would prefer a different square let me know the coordinates and I will move you on the map. The large white tokens represent the crowds of people that are filling in to view the event. You can move through them at double the movement cost, and they can move too.

Works fine for me. Although the grid and index don't seem to be lining up properly to me. Not sure if that's how it's supposed to be or if something went wrong in compression.

I use Maptools, and lay a grid over the maps I get digital images of. Often the grids do not match up perfectly especial on larger spread out areas. I try to line it up as best I can and then remove the grid visually so it won't clash with the maps pre-drawn grid. In dungeons I can shift the grid as we move through but here we will have to "fudge" some. When I have to I will try to "fudge" in favor of the players since the map issue is due to my presentation.

The positioning looks fine with me, sorry for the slow response time. Been a bit of a rough week.

Rhia sits down in her chair with her hands folded across her lap to watch the proceedings. "I would think the name "swallow tail" refers to the butterflies having tails reminiscent of the passerine bird group, the swallow. I can sketch what the tail of one looks like later for everyone to see the comparison..."

You all watch as the head priest looks over the contraption one last time and them clears his throat. He raises two thunderstones over his head and claps them together while surveying the crowd.

A sharp retort, like the crack of distant thunder, slices through the excited crowd as the sun's setting rays paint the western sky. A stray dog that has crawled under a nearby wagon to sleep starts awake, and the buzz of two dozen conversations quickly hushes as all heads turn toward the central podium, where a beaming Father Zantus addresses the crowd.

"Citizens and Guests of Sandpoint, it is time.....

BOOM!

At the north side of of the square an unattained supply wagon suddenly explodes in to flames, everyone including the priest stare in shock. An instant latter five flaming and screaming child sized figures start running around chaotically.

Travok was very occupied studying a loose stone in the cobbled ground when everything happened at once. His immediate surroundings exploded into action and suddenly he found himself in a sea of tall humans all running everywhere. He couldn't see much, but he did see that while everyone seemed to be running away from what had to have been an explosion of some kind, the people he had been standing with stood still, readied weapons or starting doing magic. "In Torag's name what's going on! I cannae see!"

The sudden action seemed to change his voice a little, the harsh dwarven dialect shone through much clearer now.

Travok holds position, readies crossbow and tries to get a sense of what is going on.

Vhik pushes his way to the front of the crowd, pulls his blade and edges northward towards the commotion. Swiflty, Baldric also hustles out of the press of the crowd and hefting his eight foot guisarme to the ready as he goes. Standing among the crowd, Zwain starts the intricate work of casting his spell. Satinder sees the pole arm carrying man rush past, and also steps bravely out of the crowd retrieving two blades.

The figures continue to shriek and burn, running around madly in chaotic circles and zig zag patterns with no apparent direction. The first rushes past Baldric who whips his pole arm at it, but the blade passes harmlessly over the small figure. It continues up onto the podium headed towards the priest franticly dashing behind Zantus and spiraling around upon the stage. The second runs in a large circle around a merchant tent, spouts of flaming flinging from its flailing arms causing the fabric to catch flame. The third figure runs along the north side of the crowd away from the initial explosion then suddenly angles and charges straight towards the crowd, who scream in panic, and perhaps pain. The fourth also charges away from the burring wagon, headed straight south, spinning and twirling as it burns and runs behind the stage. The last one dives into another merchant stall attempting to smother it's self in the wares there, but only succeeds in setting the tent ablaze.

Travok pulls out a crossbow and holds his ground among the panicking throng of festival goers. The crowd takes the sense that Rhiannon is someone in charge and parts for her as she passes (No double move cost for you in a crowd marked square for 3 rounds) and moves towards the commotion at the north side of the plaza.

The panicked crowd tries to move away from what now appears to be something deadly, not festive. The surge around many of you once again.

Vhik moves to S19 and readies his blade
Baldric moves to N21 and readies his weapon
Satinder moves to P19 and readies his weapons

Satinder:

The flaming figures are indeed goblins who seemed to have set themselves on fire. They are covered with a thick burring oil that will probably not be extinguished easily.

Figure 1 moves from L24 to N24, M24, N23 (AoO), O22 , P22. P21, Q21, Q22, -->T22, T21 ( I won't normally post every square but since this is sparactic movement I wanted to track where they went)

Baldric AoO: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Baldric:
You can tell the flaming figure is a goblin

Figure 2 moves from L27 going around the tent returning to L27
Figure 3 moves from K23 to K20, then to N17 in straight lines
Figure 4 moves from J23 to T23 in a straight line.
Figure 5 moves from I23 to G23

Rhiannon moves from V18 to P18

Rhiannon:
The flaming figures are indeed goblins who seemed to have set themselves on fire. You also here the faint sounds of screaming coming from south of the plaza.

Single Move through difficult terrain to U20. Ranged Attack targetting T21.

Vikh once again maneuvers out of the scrambling crowd and works his way around the performance platform. His song sends a furious twinge down everyone's spine. Anyone going to take advantage of his Rage Song?) Baldric sets his shoulders and charges a short distance impaling the burring goblin with his blade. The creature lets out a shriek, and falls to the dirt, as the flames continue to burn. Zane finishes the lengthy, lethargic incantation and with a wave of his hands two of the goblins, one one the stage and one behind, fall down asleep still burning. Satinder gets ready to move and lay waste to one of the creatures, but sees a guisarme wielding warrior take it out. He shifts his weight, moves out of the crowd and leaps up onto the platform headed towards the priest and the unconscious flaming goblin.

The goblin on the stage is dark, crispy and ceases to move, but the flames on its body leap to one of the butterfly cages spreading the blaze. A second goblin, the one that just sent the round tent on fire leaps and jumps trying to get away from the flames coercing across it's body. It ends up on the stairs directly in front of the new cathedrals intricately carved wooden doors. The sleeping goblin behind the stage, leaps up screaming in pain and takes off running right at Vikh. The shoanti swings his great sword decapitating the creature, its head bouncing onto the stage at Satinders feet. The last goblin must be trapped in the tent it set on fire, and the blaze there and in the other wagons and tents, increases.

Travok wades through all the long legged citizens and set to fire his crossbow, just as he pulls the trigger he is jostled from behind and the bolt fires directly into the dirt at his feet. Rhiannon dashes through the crowd, they make way for her official status and she rushes to the stage. She grasps the stunned Zantus and pulls him away from the burning goblin corpse and the now flaming butterfly cage. The crowd continues to press south and west away from the fires.

"Stop fleeing, cowards!" Baldric shouts at the crowd, "the goblins are nearly dealt with but the fires will spread! To the well! Everyone to the well, get water and put out flames!"

Seeing that the goblin heading for the cathedral seems handled, he moves past the well (to G20) and searches for signs of the goblin that vanished in the nearby structure, preparing to attack it if it comes within range readied action

Zwain, unfamiliar with the skald's song, allows the rage to overtake him and he rushes the nearest goblin screaming and frothing at the mouth, shouting obscenities and waving his staff menacingly.

It seemed a shame to Travok that such beautiful creatures should burn because of the vile actions of these wicked goblins. He took a quick survey of the cage and simply willed the water to stop, and Torag made it so, or at least attempted to.

Cast Create Water over the burning cage or in an area around it

Watching the one on the stage drop from flames, Satinder shifts his focus to the other goblins. Taking advantage of the height, he drops his blades and pulls his longbow, notching an arrow and scanning. Seeing the man run at the goblin in front of the church, he shifts his focus at the one by the tent and lets loose.

Quick draw is awesome. Firing at the goblin in G23ish. Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

No need to drop your blades if you have quickdraw. Can use the move action to put them away

Vikh rushes up the cathedral stair and impales the burning goblin there in one swift easy motion. Baldric moves to the plaza's well, calling to the citizens of Sandpoint to form a fire brigade and save the town from a disastrous fire. He scans the area seeking the last flaming goblin. Zwain, fueled by rage charges toward the neared goblin on the stage, finding it dead he bangs his staff on it looking for goblins, but none seem to left alive. On the stage Satinder trades blade for bow, spins around looking for the last goblin culprit. He fires at and strikes what he thinks is the last goblin amongst the tents wares. The unattended fires increase in size and heat, except on the stage where a sudden downpour of water puts out the burning butterfly cage.

Baldric:
There is no movement inside or around the burning tent. A small charred figure is awkwardly sprawled on top of a table of wares in the tent, it is quite likely the goblin died there in the fire.

"Come on," Rhiannon drags Father Zantus roughly by the arm down the stairs towards the well. "We need to get these fires put out!" she says on the way.

I'm guessing that she will be slower with him in tow.

Did I not hit or is that not a target? Or did I state the wrong square? It's honestly not the best map...

male Human, Slayer 1

The one you were shooting at is inside a flaming tent (and I'm pretty sure already dead), but I think you failed the perception check in the GM post which may be why you're sort of in the dark...

Satinder Coric wrote:

Yes you hit the target. That is the correct square, and even if you had named G24 or G22 or H23 I would have recognized who you meant and resolved it accordingly. I recognize the map is not the best, It is better in smaller encounters but spread out like this the grid is very hard to keep lined up so I when we have to fudge or wiggle I will always try to give the PC the advantage since the map is our of your control. Baldric is correct the goblin is already dead, but the perception check I made for Satinder was not high enough to recognize it so Satinder thinks he hit the goblin, but is uncertain since it is inside a smoke and fire filled tent of burning merchandise and it was also burring. Feel free to role-play accordingly. And thanks for asking for clarification, I hope everyone will feel free to point out anything the find unclear or incorrect so I can make any corrections or clarifications. I am not above redoing a post if an error on my part would adversely affect the outcome for a PC.

No other targets, correct?

Zwain will rush over to something burning nearby and throw something on top of it (Envisioning a tent piece or blanket or something similar) proceeding to jump up and down on it.

Barring that he will kick sand and dirt on to the fire.

Rhiannon guides the priest off the stage and towards the well, his moment of disbelief and shock over he says, "Yes, thank you. We must not let the cathedral burn." As he rushes towards the well with her he starts shouting to the people, "Citizens we need your help, grab buckets, anything you can find we must the get fires out...SAVE OUR CHURCH!"

In response some of the crowd shifts from fleeing south away from the blazing tents, and turn back towards the north coming towards the well. At first it appears they are coming to help, but then you all hear...

"Goblins chew and goblins bite
goblins cut and goblins fight
stab the dog and cut the horse
goblins eat and take by force!"

The wicked song is being sung by shrill, scratchy voices and six more goblins are approaching from the south with their dogslicers out and bloody.

Zwain feel free to make a new post, you got yours up while I was working on the map. For future reference I will signal that a combat is over by posting and OOC End of Combat in the GM post so everyone knows that we are moving out of Rounds and back into more free flow narrative posting.
