You’re not quite sure how things have escalated so quickly.

One minute you’ve decided to do something about Torch’s problems, the next you’ve found likeminded individuals, people of all types: adventurers who have heard of the town’s plight, or townsfolk themselves, and have formed a group at the Town Hall.

In front of you is Dolga Freddert, a dwarven aristocrat, one of the five councilmen and councilwomen of Torch. It’s been a few days since all the trouble started.
She looks at all of you, assessing you with sharp eyes while stroking the adamantine warhammer on her lap, and snorts.

"Well, well, well. What have we here? Another group of adventurers to try their luck at fixing our town. If it were up to me, I’d go solve the problem myself, but,"
she looks at all the empty desks beside hers,"everyone is either missing or unavailable, leaving me to do all the leading."

"The main thing, of course, is to find Khonnir Baine and bring him back alive. There’s 4000 gp in it for you. If you can also rekindle the flame, well, I’ll throw in another 4000 gp. Any questions?"

To speed things up a little bit and give you discussion…

How long ago did the flame go out?:

"It's been eight days, but only seven since the first explorers braved the new tunnels Khonnir discovered. Khonnir himself led his second foray into the caves just a couple of days ago-and he has yet to return."

Where's the entrance to these caves?:

"There's an underwater passage connecting them to Weeping Pond. Khonnir noticed a large number of human footprints on the pond's banks-he was there the day the fires went out testing the water to ensure it hadn't suddenly grown more toxic-and he realized that a sizable group of people had entered the pond but had not emerged.

Who made those tracks? :

"We don't know. Word about town puts blame on the Technic League, but I think that's too convenient and obvious an answer. Khonnir was hoping to find out more by delving deeper into the caves, but who knows what he found in there ... or indeed, if he's even still alive?"

How many explorers have gone into the caves before us?:

"Four teams in all, but only one came back to report what they found-Khonnir's first expedition. Khonnir spoke at length with the council before going back in, and he confirmed what his group told us, despite how outlandish it sounded. The first team was a group of halfling adventurers, the second a group of local thugs, and the fourth a small adventuring party devoted to the worship of Brigh from out of town. Khonnir's team undertook the third and fifth expeditions under Black Hill, and it was on the fifth expedition-his second trip-that he went missing."

What did they find? :

"The caves are inhabited by several enormous vermin and other scavengers, along with some strange humanoids who had the ability to blend into the shadows of the cave walls, and a nest of gremlins. Khonnir believed this indicated a deeper connection in the caves to the Darklands, but of more immediate interest was his discovery of a wall of solid metal deep in the caves. A wall made of a skymetal alloy called glaucite. He said it was like the kind we mine from the hills and surrounding plains, but formed into a structure with doors. It was near one of these doors that Khonnir found the broken automaton that he brought back after his first expedition."

What do we know about the metal wall? :

"Very little. Khonnir examined it himself, and confirmed that it was an alloy of adamantine and iron, and that one of the doors in the wall was locked tight but the other was open. He had planned on exploring deeper beyond that door on his second expedition, but who knows if he actually made it that far?"

What assistance can you provide us? :

“Once you're on the job, I'll give each of you a writ that you can show to any of the merchants in town for a flat 20% discount on any gear you need to purchase-I wish I could offer a greater discount than that, but that's the best I can do. Further, Val, Khonnir's adopted daughter, has closed down her father's tavern, the Foundry, for the time being. She's told me that any group that's going into the caves to look for her father can use the tavern, free of charge, as a headquarters and a place to rest between forays. Finally, the entrance to the caves is flooded. You'll need to swim a bit to get to the caves. Joram Kyte has agreed to cast water breathing on any group to aid in entering the caves-free of charge, of course. You can find him at the temple of Brigh or up at Crowfeather Palace when you're ready to go."

Of course, don’t read if no one asks the question.

Aurusk stares at Dolga intently, moving his lips slightly as she talks. He nods, smiling as a huge grin crosses his face. What will we find down there? It doesn't seem possible, but Aurusk's grin seems to widen at the thought of what might be down there.

I'm counting this as a"what did they find?"

Aurusk's demeanor seems to deflate slightly as Dolga speaks about enormous vermin, but he brightens again at the end. A metal wall . . . he mutters to himself.

Alexis smiles at the thought of the strange things she will see. this will make a fine tale. And if the technic league is involved...all the better.

"I get the vermin, scavengers, and 'cave people made of shadow,' but what exactly is a "grem'in?" Sounds outright like some sort of queer beastie, and I ain't wanted to wander into a nest o' somethin' I don't at least have an idea of what looks like."

Gavin taps his mahogany cane against the floor.

"And ma'am. The money ain't important. Khonnir is a good man who does great work. Gettin' him back is its own reward."

Male Human

"So what about this magical cave. We've an underwater cave ain't no one knew about before, and mysterious people commin' out of it? Has there been a recent rise in gillmen immigrants lately? They like water, huh?" The large man sighs and makes to examine his equipment. "I hope we find Khonnir. He's a good man, even if he's runnin' a rival tavern."

Valt is hearing with interest all the questions and answers, but being unable to undertand most of them, he asks them again, in Hallit.

The fact that his suspicions about the ruins under the mountain are confirmed, makes him very eager to investigate it, althought he is worried about the missing expeditions.

Hallit:
Someone examined the automaton, or is it useless and beyond repair?
Says Valt in Hallit with a funny accent.

Male Human

Hallit:
"Well I think Khonnir was the foremost expert on the thing. I'd expect his daughter would be runner up and I'm sure she would have said something if she felt it was important."

Aurusk watches as the conversation flows from one of his companions to the next. He follows along, but occasionally his brows furrow, as if he missed a few words or phrases. Then the two men begin speaking in strange patterns. Aurusk shakes his head and watches intently. Then steps up, Wait, what was that? I didn't catch what you said. He steps back, looking around brows pulled together tight.

"I didn't mean that. Gillmen don't belong out here, I doubt it's them. Did anyone attempt to follow the tracks back to their place of origin? Did anyone see this mysterious, supposedly large group of strangers milling about the lake?"

Kraig shakes his head. "Just talking about Khonnir's machine-man, Aurusk. I don't think the one he found is immediately important. If someone wants it destroyed just in case, I'm sure I can be convinced to do the deed."

Her eyes shine for a second, "Maybe you should talk to Val, his daughter. She might know something about his last expedition. She's probably at their house, tinkering with some gadget or other."

Nyssa had been standing at the back of the room. She had only just arrived in torch and learned that the famous forge fire had gone out. Her inquiries had led her here to the council hall. Re-lighting the 'torch' is definitely in her interest. Nyssa can think of many uses for the reward money as well. A person could open up her own shop with that sort of scratch.
"I'm Nyssa Veshane weapons and armor are my trade. And I know the ways of war."
The tall red haired woman introduces herself. Then she asks Dolga: "So when did the torch go out?"

Nyssa listens to the answer she is given then asks:"where is the entrance to the tunnels?" I'm new in town, she explains.

His voice grows quiet as he stares off, Sometimes there's nothing for it but to be truly rough. "You are not going to like it when we get there. Or at least, I am not going to like it... Follow me. Have a good day, Councilwoman. We will be back as soon as possible with new of Khonnir or with the man himself, divines willing."

Moving past Aurusk, Gavin locks his cane in between his left arm and ribs and walks out to lead the way to Khonnir's Inn.

Gavin leads you to Khonnir’s place.

You head west from the Town Hall, cross the bridge (north atop the large hill is normally where the purple flame shoots up) and find yourselves at the Foundry Tavern, where Khonnir lives. East of the tavern is a foundry, hence the name, that Khonnir rents out to smiths shaping skymetal. Slightly north of the two buildings is Khonnir’s residence.

The tavern itself is usually busy and filled with merriment as it is a popular place to hangout, however it seems closed today. The foundry is also closed as there is no smoke billowing from its chimney.

Gavin knows that Val closed both after her father’s disappearance.

Before you can get any closer to the three buildings, you hear a loud crash from the northern stone building and a female scream. You see a young Kellid girl dressed in machinist’s clothing fallen on the ground, looking up at a metallic construct. It whirls its metal arms and appears to be getting closer to her…

Gavin's knowledge:
The creature is a repair drone, though from the missing parts it is clearly malfunctioning. You can see inside its chest cavity to where its power core is, and notice that the silverdisks that normally power this one are glowing purplish instead of light blue.

You may ask three questions concerning the construct. Also you're too far away from the robot, about 20' more.

This particular drone does not have damage reduction or special attacks as it is malfunctioning. It can move about 30 ft per round. You can make out inside the robot's chassis something that looks like a healing module, and a net-deploying device, but they both look broken.

Attack roll: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Damage: 1d6 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3

Nyssa's arrow flies past the automaton. You see it go into the house followed by the noise of splintering glass.

Kraig charges towards the creature, throwing a fist in its direction. The repair drone jerks suddenly dipping underneath his attack.

Val Baine crawls back 10' too scared to stand up.

Round 2

The automaton swings one of its arms at Kraig, and misses nearly unbalancing itself. Its central eye pulses faintly with an eerie violet light.

Actually, Kraig's fist glows with a barely perceptible glow from Alexis' song as it strikes the automaton. The metal creature jerks it head back from the impact.

5 damage to the repair drone.

that would be 4 damage instead because of the performance. My mistake.

Nyssa lets her bow fall to the ground with a smirk for the broken glass. She hadn't meant for that to happen, but it struck her slightly funny that it had. Drawing her longsword, Nyssa charges in.

She gives the automaton a two-handed slash.
Charging longsword: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 101d8 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Missing Aurusk's attack. Nyssa's attack will have flanking as well as a +1 Attack and Damage from Alexis' singing, unless she stops performing on her turn.

Sorry. Am sick, so I got home from work last night and essentially passed out. Slept for a good 13 hours.

Aurusk prepares to throw his dagger, but seeing all the people surrounding the automaton, he decides to just drop it. He moves in a little closer and whips his glaive around at the creature.

Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

I did not add in the bardic performance because it's auditory, and I'm deaf :(
