"On to the house then? Astra, do you know the way?"
Chakos will establish a Life Link with (checks the character roster to determine who is squishiest) Elizabeth.
Great job on the hit points folks, impressive for squishy characters!

Astra Picard |
"I believe Khonnir's residence is next to the Foundry Tavern he owns, across the bridge on the west side of town", Astra replies, heading out of the town hall and starting towards the bridge in the westerly direction, past a few houses.
If you have the Player's Guide, we're headed from 15 towards 12 on the map on the last page.
Also, I don't think my HP is so impressive, it's just the first level max HP rule. :)
GM Demonmoose |
Astra leads you to Khonnir’s place.
You head west from the Town Hall, cross the bridge (north atop the large hill is normally where the purple flame shoots up) and find yourselves at the Foundry Tavern, where Khonnir lives. East of the tavern is a foundry, hence the name, that Khonnir rents out to smiths shaping skymetal. Slightly north of the two buildings is Khonnir’s residence.
The tavern itself is usually busy and filled with merriment as it is a popular place to hangout, however it seems closed today. The foundry is also closed as there is no smoke billowing from its chimney.
Astra recalls that Val closed both after her father went missing.
Before you can get any closer to the three buildings, you hear a loud crash from the northern stone building and a female scream. You see a young Kellid girl dressed in machinist’s clothing fallen on the ground, looking up at a metallic construct. It whirls its metal arms and appears to be getting closer to her…

Astra will be acting last, she will be using a full-round action to observe the construct and try to determine any weaknesses (primarily, if I can choose), or abilities in general. If Astra is too far, then she will first spend her first action getting close enough to observe, but trying to stay out of melee range, then use her second round to observe.

"That's Val! Khonnir Baine's daughter!" Astra cries out when she sees the situation, pointing a finger at the conflict, although by the time she reacts, everyone has probably already spotted it. "And whatever that other thing is, it looks so alien that it surely just has to be the device that Khonnir retrieved!" Her eyes widen a little bit as she realizes the potential importance. "Please don't break it --!" But then, Val is possibly in mortal danger. "But -- but -- don't let it hurt Val either!" That's not too much to ask, is it?
GM Demonmoose |
Liz is distrubed and runs 30 feet closer, casting a spell that causes a spark of electricity to fly out.
Casting Jolt

The spark strikes the construct, causing exposed wiring to electrify as well. A small ball sized explosion comes from its chest cavity. It looks more damaged than before.
GM Demonmoose |
Val Baine is stunned for a second by the crazed machine in front of her, before she crawls back 10 feet. She doesn't seem to have any tools or weapons near her to fight back. The young Kellid girl also doesn't seem to notice any of you.
Sneek first before the drone.

A series of hisses and clicks exude from Chakos' throat, a more evil sound some of you may have never heard.
Astra Picard |
Interestingly enough, I *do* have Abyssal. I'm guessing Chakos has the tongues curse? I'm assuming that talking posts without action are okay out of initiative order since talking is essentially free actions. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.
Astra is momentarily surprised at the sound of the language Chakos uses, something that she would have expected out of invaders from neighboring Worldwound. Still, there's no time to look a gift horse in the mouth.
Astra Picard |
Let's see if that comes out all wrong.

Ultimate power requires ultimate sacrifice! Dual Cursed-Clouded and Tongues. It will be rough for a couple levels, but it will pay off in the end.
Sneek the Silent |
Val, daughter to most important man in town. Saving her would make it easier to start a new life here. Sneek thought to himself.
”I protect girl, you stop machine!” Sneek said.
@Demonmoose I move 40 feet or run if I don’t make it with my normal movement, to stand over the girl to protect her from the machine. While moving I draw my rapier.
Sneek the Silent |
While I stand over the girl I say to her "Dont worry Sneek will save you."
@Demonmoose On the next rounds I move/nudge/pull the girl away from the machine until she is at a safe distance then I will try to flank the machine to help Argug.
@Demonmoose I have real life Pathinder tonight so I dont think I will post anymore this evening.

Sneek the Silent runs up in front of Val, placing himself between the girl and the automaton.
The malfunctioning repair drone swings one of its arms at the rat,
Rat Smasher: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 151d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
but Sneek twists his body out of the way, as the arm slams into the dirt.
Argug of Clan Gutwrencher |
Argug snarls, and fiercely runs up on the hated machine. He leaps into the air and kicks at the automoton, putting all the impact of his body into his foot.
Charging at the machine, power attacking, flanking with Sneek if possible.

I realize that's only a 18 to hit if I'm not flanking. Without a tactical map it's hard to tell.
Chakos Hyluan |
Chakos moves in the direction Sneek and Argug went. After 20' (I believe) I can see Sneak protecting the girl (who is prone).
I will drop my Life Link with Elizabeth as an Immediate Action, and establish the link with Sneek as a Standard Action.

Argug grins a big, tusk-filled, toothy grin. He reaches down and picks up the dismembered head of the creature, tosses it in Astra's general direction, and shrugs. "Oops. Broke it." Clearly the orc is not phased by this turn of events.
He turns to Chakos. "Care ta' show off yer fancy healin'?" The orc looks a little battered and bruised, but nothing too terrible.
Only down by 4, but that's 1/3 my life at this low of a level.
Chakos Hyluan |
Those of us, like me, without full BAB have to struggle through first level before we can draw during a move, so getting into the fight was going to be rough for Chakos. Still, we made it! First blood, errr, first alkaline battery?

"Absolutely my friend, let's see what you've got there."
Chakos makes a couple oohs and aahs, and finally, says, "let's see if this does the trick."

Val Baine wipes her face leaving a grease smudge along her tattoos.
"I am okay," she says to Elizabeth and Chakos, "I wasn't injured. Just startled. It just came to life all of a sudden."
She looks down and notices that her other hand is clamped on Sneek's shoulder.
"Oh, I'm so sorry. I didn't realize." She lets go of the ratfolk's shoulder.
Looking around, Val sees Astra, a somewhat familiar face. "Hello, Miss Picard. Anyway, I was trying to fix this repair drone, to see if it could tell me anything about why dad disappeared, but its recording system was missing. I tried everything, but the silverdisks in his power core were stuck and out of juice. I tried using the extraction unit gun, then pliers, even a hammer, but nothing was working."
She sighs. "So I took a break to get a sandwich, and all of a sudden it went haywire. Started destroying things in the house. I threw my wrench at it, and then it chased me out here.
Argug of Clan Gutwrencher |
Feeling eerily refreshed from the oracle's magic, Argug stretches, cracks his back, and flexes his freshly patched muscles. "Thanks."
Hearing Val's story, Argug shakes his head in disapproval.
"'S what ya get for turnin' yer back on one of those blasted things."
Argug spits on the ground in disdain, and delivers a swift kick to the remains of the brutalized bot. Not too hard, though...he doesn't want to ruin the possibility of gathering this thing up for scrap parts.

You may ask 3 questions about the repair drone.
ElizabethArdoc |
Is it resistant to any attacks in particular? What are it's weaknesses? That is all
This is strange. Liz points to a certain object. This thing gives it energy to move and looks extra charged with energy. Some parts, such as a part that allows it to heal and fire a captue net do not work and it is weaker than it should be, no doubt because of malfunctioning.

"Recording system?" Astra quirks an eyebrow to Val's words, and purses her lips for a few moments. Fascinating. "Like a memory...that we could have browsed through. But no such luck. Thank you for your examination, Val." Then, she motions to the rest of the group, introducing them to the young girl. "Group, this is Val Baine, Khonnir Baine's daughter. The missing man's." Well, adopted daughter...either Astra doesn't know, or she doesn't consider it pertinent to get down to that level of detail. "Val, we're here to start an investigation into your father's disappearance." The twentysomething woman takes a step closer to the younger girl, to try to place a reassuring hand onto her shoulder. "We'll do our best to bring your father back. First, we'd like to examine the wreck of this machine, just in case it provides us with any clues." She looks to Argug first, intending to ask for his help, as he seems the strongest and thus most capable of carrying it into the workshop. On second thought... she then hesitates, as someone who doesn't appreciate the intricacies of the device might accidentally break something that carries valuable information. "Elizabeth, Val... let's get the remains back inside, shall we? Maybe there's still something we can salvage."
Getting the remains of the robot back indoors, Astra looks for good examination table to lay everything out on, and then gets down to work. "This might take a while", she warns the others, aiming her warning generally for those who might seem less technically inclined, such as Argug, who might want to find something to do while waiting.
If possible, Astra would like to Take 20 on Knowledge (engineering), and make a really thorough check on the machine's remains. Take 20 +10 skill would give 30. Aid Another is also welcomed for further bonuses if possible. Specifically, she is looking for the following things, in order of priority:
1) What reactivated the machine? Is it likely to be the same thing that supercharged the power core? If so, is there any way to tell what that was?
2) Is there any way to determine any meaning why the silverdisks were glowing purple instead of the normal blue? Is it related to the supercharging phenomenon?
3) Is there any way to tell what has damaged it? Does it look like anything Khonnir Baine might have done? Or something unrelated to him?
4) Anything to confirm that this machine comes from the tunnels inside Black Hill. Val might be able to relate second-hand information from whatever her father has shared, but is there any data that corroborates the story? Does the device seem like it has been immersed in water on the way back through Weeping Pond?
Finally, after completing her examination, Astra would like to try to separate the (still supercharged, right?) power core from the rest of the robot, to prevent it from any sort of self-repair and reawakening again. Taking her time with it, again I will Take 20 if I can, with +9 giving 29 if possible.
Chakos Hyluan |
"Ummm, do whatever you need I suppose, holler for us if you need something broken," he smiles at Argug. "Val, this is an inn right? Any food or drink around? A fight always stirs a hunger in my friend here, and I'd hate for him to have to eat alone. We can fend for ourselves if you can just point us in the right direction."

1) What reactivated the machine? Is it...
Val nods. “Yes, ma’am.” The young kellid girl points to the tavern. “If you’re searching for my Dad, you can use the tavern as a base. It has bedrolls and rooms, but please don’t touch the ale unless you pay for it.”
She tugs one of the arms of the metal creature and seems to have no trouble dragging it into the Baine household. The repair drone broke one of the doors down exposing the messy interior. All sorts of little gadgets are sprawled haphazardly across the wooden floor and tables, along with grease, oil and burn marks from electrical tools.
Val motions to the broken portcullis. ”It’s not a big deal, things explode here all the time. But usually Dad has magical shields in place, or layers of metal in the way. Luckily, he sells a lot so we always have gold to fix everything.”
”Now, what is it that you wanted to look at?”
1. The machine was reactivated from the silverdisks. A sudden mass of power, you think remotely, charged the silverdisks, which supercharged the power core. You don’t know where it came from.
2. You believe the silverdisks were glowing with purple light because they were charged almost instantaneously. Perhaps even residually.
3. The damage looks fairly recent. A blunt weapon like a club is your best guess.
4. You can’t tell where it came from using engineering. You can find a little bit of wetness inside the chassis of the robot.
Astra picks up a sharp blade to sever the wires connecting the power core to the robot. She sees that the silverdisks have blackened, burnt circuits and the orb of it is no longer lit.
Chakos Hyluan |
"Right, got it, the ale isn't part of the buffet! Argug? Shall we?"
Chakos intends to make a monstrously large Dagwood sandwich if he can find the fixings, which he'll cut in half and share with Argug.
Astra Picard |
Astra takes nearly an hour with the robot's remains before finishing with a few quick cuts, which causes the brightly lit power core to go off. "Interesting", she muses to herself mostly, before making sure to place the power core to the opposite side of the workshop from the robot. "I think I'm done here. Unless you have anything further, Elizabeth?" she asks.
"From what I can tell, the device wasn't activated by anything Val did, but from a surge of power that came from somewhere else. I can't tell if it was intentional or accidental, however", she summarizes her findings, a little disappointed herself that she couldn't find out more. But, there are plenty of leads still to go. "It should be dead for good now, though. I don't think it's going to get back up again. Now", she takes a deep breath, "I would appreciate a trip to the armory so I can obtain some fundamentals of self-defense before we walk into another spot of trouble. After that, perhaps a tavern --" and she stops right there, remembering that this place, Khonnir's place, is one. "Say, Val, do you know anything about the previous people who went within Black Hill? Other than your father, naturally. I believe there was a group of halfling adventurers, some local thugs, and some worshippers of Brigh. Did they make any stops at your tavern?"
Argug of Clan Gutwrencher |
Argug follows Chakos to the kitchen of the pub. He grabs his half of the sandwich and proceeds to stuff the thing down in a single mouthful. He nearly chokes swallowing it down, pats his own back and coughs, grinning. He pops a silver coin out of his belt pouch, leaves it on the bar, grabs a couple tankards and fills one up for Chakos and himself.
