Tortella |
Tortella maintains his battle stance, ready to skewer the thing the moment it tries to get close to shore.
readied action for me until I say otherwise or it goes off
Kargen Hapspring |
Kargen smiles as he sees his friends back away. Finally, a clear shot!
Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 4 + 1 + 1 = 15
Damage: 1d8 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 2 + 1 + 1 = 11
GM Chris Mortika |
The creature advances to D3, floating along the surface of the brackish water. Because it moved, it only gets one attack.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22,; it only needs one attack to his Luccinus
Fortitude save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8; and that's not good enough to resist.
Luccinus, you take 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 hit points of damage, 1d4 ⇒ 1 point of Strength damage, and 1d4 ⇒ 2 points of Constitution damage.
Your turn.
Kargen Hapspring |
Kargen draws another bead on the creature and lets an arrow fly.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 1 - 4 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 4 + 1 - 4 + 1 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 1 + 1 = 8
Tortella |
Longspear: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16, Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Luccinus |
The dice can do no wrong for the creature... lets see if the karma seesaws
Fights defensively 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Damage 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
GM Chris Mortika |
Zacarius channels energy. Unfortunately, you don't have the Selective Channel feat, so you cure some of the monster's damage as well.
Kargen strikes, leaving the creature still mobile and menacing, but in tatters.
Tortella, you're at C6, and the monster is at D3. Let's say you take a 5-foot step to C5 and attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12; a miss.
Hawkwren strikes, dropping it finally.
That's one less violet fungus the world has to worry about.
Zacarias Omoroi |
Wow wasn´t aware of that totally!
Holy flame of the Dawnflower! Thank the goddess this abomination is dead! Are you badly hurt Luccinus? I can´t really see that under your armor and i got the impression the touch of this creature
Zacarias tries to diagnose his own and Luccinus woundings.
heal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Hawkwren Agricola |
Hawkwren slings his bow and joins the others, hearing Zacarias he responds. That is Io to you two. Obviously your presence is needed, so you must decide. If we decide to go on, might I suggest we find our way around this swamp.
Kargen Hapspring |
Kargen looks at the Half-Orc. "Tortella's right. If you can, we should push on. We've got to find Becher and that deed otherwise those soldiers are eventually going to attack Railford."
Luccinus |
Luccinus says nothing but wades back into the water, looking for signs of Becher or his group in the weeds and muck (and that damn weed as well)
Luccinus |
Get in here - if we find Becher and his gang here then we save ourselves a trip
And that bloody Crones Tongue too!
Kargen Hapspring |
Kargen looks around the edge of the swamp for an obvious path. If there isn't one, then he plunges in after Luccinus, holding his bow and some scrolls above the water to keep them dry. He makes a face as he wades through the swamp water.
Once on the other side, he makes sure to check everyone for more leeches, fungus, or any other swamp parasites.
Perception?: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Hawkwren Agricola |
Hawkwren makes sure any items prone to be damaged by water are stowed carefully and wades into the water, looking around in the murky waters. What are we looking for?
Perception Aid Another: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21
GM Chris Mortika |
Crone's Tongue, you find.
You also find a body. Taking 20 on a Heal check:
At first, it looks like a juvenile elf, oddly and badly decomposed. But then you understadn that this was a ghoul, animating the body of a human girl, aged somewhere between 8 and 12, who came into the bog and was killed by the violet fungus, only hours ago.
Luccinus |
Ahhh HA, Luccinus says triumphantly as he wraps a goodly amount of swamp weed in a shirt and packs it away.
He looks over the corpse.
Strong ghoul presence here... damn it. Bad enemies indeed - but it says both ghouls and likely Becher fjorded here.
He points through the swamp to the direction they need to proceed in.
Hawkwren Agricola |
Luccinus, I would advise that we attempt to skirt the edge of the swamp. If you are set on going straight through, let us at least cut some sticks to help plumb the depths of these waters. Then we should proceed with caution.
Tortella |
Tortella thrusts his spear towards Hawkwren (in a non-threatening way), and speaks, "I have... many weapons. You take." His grisly, toothy visage broken in what might pass for a smile.
GM Chris Mortika |
Continuing towards the caverns?
Within a nearly crumbling foundation of cobbles, a pile of debris clogs a 5-foot indent in the ground that looks like an old stairwell. A few feet away, a man lies face down in the murk.
Hawkwren Agricola |
Hawkwren follows Luccinus, stopping him before they get within twenty feet. Wait, let us be sure it is dead. With his bow and an arrow in one hand, he picks up a rock and throws it at the body. Continuing to do so until he hits it.
Kargen Hapspring |
Kargen stands off a bit, watching with some amusement at Hawkwren pelts the body with rocks. Still, the man holds his own bow at the ready in case the rocks stir the body to rise.
Tortella |
I find it hilarious that a man who may well lay dying is now being pelted with rocks.
GM: How long was the trip? I want to know if my mage armor is still going (duration 1 hour).
Tortella snorts and snickers at the sight of the rock-throwing. He then checks his spear and axe to make sure the edges are ready for killing if the "man" before them should awake with an unholy appetite, for instance.
GM Chris Mortika |
Tortella, it's been a little over two hours.
The common ways to tell if a body is dead are the deathwatch spell and/or a Heal check. Throwing rocks at a body is a good way to make sure it's dead. Are you sure that's what you want to do?
In this case, of course, the body is face down in murky water and mud. If it's a living human and wants to remain thus, it needs to grow some breathing equipment on the back of its head.
Zacarius, this man is dead. He was obviously crushed when the load fell on him, but he's also suffering from dozens of serious bite wounds. (And not just bite-and-hang-on. These are bite-off-and-chew wounds.) You can't tell whether he was bitten before or after the tunnel collapse, and you can't tell which killed him.
Zacarias Omoroi |
This man deserves a proper funeral, whoever he was. Also we should amke sure somehow he will not have to come back as a mindless undead so his soul can hopefully rest in peace and go on to the afterlife. Where did you hear that taking the head of stops someone from rising as a ghoul? Is that some chelish superstition?
Zacarias speaks some prayers, asking the Dawnflower to forgive this man and take his soul into her arms. Then he searches the body for any signs of his identity and other hints of what has been going on.
GM Chris Mortika |
Right.
Tortella, there might be some hobgoblins breathing down your neck, and you might not notice them with that roll.
Hawkwren, no. There appears to have been a cave-in.
Zacarius, the body looks only hours' dead. But all you can see is from the bottom of the ribcage and up; the rest of him is buried under the rubble.
Luccinus, if he died from a ghoul bite, he will indeed rise again, at the stroke of midnight. Or so the legends say.
Janiya, Kargen, what are you up to?
Kargen Hapspring |
Seeing no reaction at all from the body, Kargen moves up to it for closer examination and to check the surrounding rock area for where it may be loosest.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
