"He was recently seconded here, I have yet to meet him though."
"Yes this is not surprising, like yourselves, he has only just begun his first Vigil. My attentions were drawn to him originally because he seems afflicted with some inner disquiet. Perhaps this what drew him to Chaplain Strome in the first place, (he looks pointedly at Brother Eli) but I believe that there is something else entirely at work. They possessed a familiarity with each other that was apparent almost immediately to anyone watching as intently as I, as if there was a shared past between the two. I have investigated to the best of my abilities the possibility that Strome was once, himself, a Templar, but I have found nothing conclusive in that vein."

I nod and raise a hand towards Brother Hrothgar, "Gratitude acknowledged but is unnecessary. It was our Kill-Team's honor to serve the Emperor and extract your grace from Tantalus."
"Substantive dialog commences. Query: did I breach protocol in discharging duties assigned to me, either with my Kill-Team or with Inquisitor Quist?"
There is grating buzz from the Magos' vox that could be construed by Hrothgar as a sigh.
"Protocol was breached according to the dictates of the Ordo Xenos and the requisite confidentiality expected for the specified missive by myself, and, by association, the Adeptus Mechanicus, but, contradictorily, had this protocol not been violated, we would not be engaging in this dialogue, hence the extension of my gratitude."
There is another buzz, this one more questioning in tone.
"Given that the message contained in the datacore intended for Inquisitor Carmillus has been divulged I do not perceive any further complications arising from our discussion of its contents, provided those not privy to the contents will allow the requisite privacy."
The green lenses of the Magos turn to affix both Brother Fellhand and The Forgemaster in his gaze, and Greyweaver recognizes his request immediately, cuffing the much taller Fellhand upside the head when he is slow to move toward the door to the chamber. With a gruff nod of respect to you and the Magos, Harl Greyweaver and the younger Magos step out, sealing the door behind them.
"To facilitate an economical exchange of dialog without excluding Brother Hrothgar of the Deathwatch/Originating Astartes chapter Space Wolf, I will refrain from conversing in binary and will deign to interlocute in High Gothic. To simplify said exchange of dialog, I will ask that you formulate and utter your own queries, of which there must be many, prior to speaking my own."

Common Lore(Deathwatch) and
Common Lore(Adeptus Astartes/Ultramarines) both unsuccessful.
"I cannot recall that name."
"I would not expect you to, Brother Quintus, he is more my own contemporary, and would be as venerable as I, should he have lived to see this day. Brother Prascus, though he perished with much honor on Macragge during the first Tyranid war, honored our chapter more through his serving eleven Vigils with the Deathwatch in the Reach. He was a Watch Captain for several, and Master of the Vigil twice. We would not have the Hunting Grounds had it not been for his inventiveness and foresight. As a friend, there is not a day that passes that I do not miss his wisdom."
He lowers his head, finishing his prayer.
"Ah, well, I will not drown you in the melancholic musings of an old man. I could regale you for hours enumerating Brother Pracus' finer qualities, but there is only that I wish to speak of this day."
"What he is remembered most for is his uncanny gift for fostering cooperation among those Kill-team he led; uniting the disparate traditions and mindsets of so many chapters to forge a cohesive whole that was greater than the sum of its individual marines. His patience and motivating words turned impassioned rivals into fast friends who would die for one another, taught those whose worldviews differing by insurmountable degrees to find common ground, and found a balance among leading by example and authority that made these Kill-teams perhaps the greatest that the Watch Fortress has ever seen sally forth to combat the enemies of the Emperor and mankind."
His fatherly gaze catches Quintus off guard.
"I tell you this, because regardless of your own doubts, I see that you share many of his qualities, Brother Quintus. You may not believe it yourself at present, when all your worries weigh so heavy a burden upon you, but you will in time. The success of your first mission only reinforced this impression with me. I give you this secret freely, one that Brother Prascus shared with me long ago for just such an occasion as this: let all in your Kill-team feel the unforgiving yoke of leadership and learn what it demands, so that they may better understand their own roles in fostering the unity our endeavors so require. You will know who is the best fit for leading each of your missions, trust your instincts in this, despite what reservations logic may otherwise dictate at times, and steer the others to your choice, ameliorating the contention such decisions bring."
"For whatever reason, be it destiny or circumstance, our chapter is looked to for guidance, leadership, and stability by the legions of our brethren. Embrace this imposed mantle rather than fearing it."
Brother Hyzeron then stares at the embossed Omega rune on the vault doors a long time before speaking again, and you wonder at the sights, both beautiful and malign, his ancient eyes have seen.
"Fear not for the Iron Snake, either. I have watched him since your return, have seen his sessions in the Hunting Grounds. He has accepted the fate the Emperor has intended for him and is ready to take his oath."
He closes his eyes thoughtfully.
"Hmmmm. So close, I hear it all the more now, the time draws nigh."

Disappointed in my failure to obey proper protocol. I will impose penance later.
"Commencing queries."
After scrolling my memory banks, I produce the following questions for the Magos:
"Categorize the nature of your relationship to Inquisitors Carmillus and Quist. One of harmony or discord? What should I be aware of, especially in light of my failure to follow protocol?"
"50 meters southwest of the Pyroclast-Gamma-9 Gatehouse Transport Station, Kill-Team Umbra discovered a servitor cut in half with a crushed servo-skull. Additionally the blood-trail we followed from the crash site seemed to be stanched by some unknown cause. Explain these anomalies."
"Upon return to Erioch, I learned of accusations regarding Black Templars slaughtering loyal Imperial troops in the Cellebos Warzone. Are you aware of such activity? What is the most likely answer to this blasphemous charge? Miscommunication? Enemy subterfuge? Traitor legions?"
"What was the nature of the xenos-taint found aboard the ore-hauler Shoulder of Stepatikos? Is there any history of the species genus dolinae in man-sized life-forms?"
"Was Dark Magos Vayze finally defeated by Saint Enoch? What legends exist regarding this climactic episode? Can you identify the sacred relic bequeathed to the Thrice-Martyred by the Omega Vault?"
"Who is your colleague on Karack? Is there a relationship between him, the Karlack Imperial Guard regiment encountered on the moon Tantalus, and the Ore-Hauler that originated from the planet Aurum?"
"Regarding data-core 88TK-366: is there additional data that remains unopened in my cogitator system? Am I privy to that data?"
"Finally, are you aware of any rumors regarding traitor presence here on Erioch?"
Surprisingly, I feel my pulse-rate rise slightly as I await the Magos' responses.

While keeping an eye out for other xenos brought to the sound of our fire, I motion Brother Decius to form up back to back as I draw my chain sword in one hand and switch the bolter to my off hand.
Awareness test successful by one degree for Brother Caledonii. Brother Decius' Awareness test is also successful by one degree (I would not penalize you for forgetting a bonus, Decius). Only one success was actually needed between both of you, so both may react normally to the sudden arrival of more Tyranid.
The Storm Warden and his pupil hear them before they see them, crashing through the dense undergrowth to either side of their position. Caledonii flips his bolter to his off-hand and pulls his chainsword from his hip, thumbing the activation stud just as they burst through the kudzu-draped trees to either side.
Both of you may act, I will forgo the battlemap in this situation, as the combat is close enough to be abstracted. The two Leapers that vaulted from the other side of the river will act next round after scampering down the knotty boles of the mangroves, as will those that were attracted to the bolter fire (three more Leapers on Caledonii's side of the trail, and three more on Decius' flank, for a total of six additional). Both of you may attack this round with ranged weaponry, but the surviving Mahir Leapers will all be within melee range by next round.

Disappointed in my failure to obey proper protocol. I will impose penance later.
"Commencing queries."
After scrolling my memory banks, I produce the following questions for the Magos:
The Magos remains still as an oracular statue, his writhing mechadendrites slowly uncoiling to hang slack and motionless at his side.
"Categorize the nature of your relationship to Inquisitors Carmillus and Quist. One of harmony or discord? What should I be aware of, especially in light of my failure to follow protocol?"
"My interactions with the Inquisitor Carmillus and her designated subordinates are predicated on mutually beneficial exchanges of datum relevant to our respective interests. The 'relationship' as you call it could be categorized as harmonious; as it is built upon a longstanding foundation of shared respect despite our vastly different roles in the service of the Imperium. Failing to follow the mandated protocol of the Inquisitor of the Chamber is a vexing hypothetical. I would postulate that she will be able to punish one of the Astartes, albeit in a circumspect manner, should she so desire it. Conversely, she may also dismiss the violation of protocol without prejudice, as I have chosen to do, based on the aforementioned extenuating circumstances. It is too early in the continuum to cogitate a viable probability."
"The servitor and servo-skull you speak of were elements of my surviving contingent following the crash of the shuttle I debarked upon. There is an 94.6777 percent probability that the blood trail you describe was my own, caused by a violent encounter with vanguard organisms of Hive Fleet Dagon of the genus, gaunt. Although gravely injured in this initial skirmish, my authosanguinary subsystem was able to staunch the flow of my vital fluids for a time, albeit at considerable expense to the waning power supply in my potentia coil."
"This line of questioning is derived from datum unknown to me. While I perceive that there is nothing to be gained from an uninformed hypothesis on this matter by myself, I postulate that you are requesting an 'educated guess' (the Magos utters this with an obvious disdain for the principle). If this is the motivating factor for your somewhat specious inquiry, I will endeavor to humor this impulse. The greatest likelihood based on datum presented is an incidence of 'friendly fire' upon the battlefield. The theory of subterfuge by traitorous forces is not without merit, but far less likely, on the order of several magnitudes. Such tactics are favored by the servants of the Ruinous Powers, however, and therefore cannot be discounted out of hand."
"What was the nature of the xenos-taint found aboard the ore-hauler Shoulder of Stepatikos? Is there any history of the species genus dolinae in man-sized life-forms?"
"Ah, an interrogative with a clear answer: the xenos-taint you speak of originates from an innocuous reptilian organism, a non-sentient animal, found solely on the world of Aurum, a primitive planet on rimward edge of the Orpheus Salient. I have theorized that the microscopic scale cultures and spoor extracted from the fragments of unidentified crystalline material found in the hold of the Shoulder of Stepatikos conclusively proves that the cargo in question originated on the world of Aurum as well, barring the miniscule probability of some unforeseen cross-contamination."
"Was Dark Magos Vayze finally defeated by Saint Enoch? What legends exist regarding this climactic episode? Can you identify the sacred relic bequeathed to the Thrice-Martyred by the Omega Vault?"
The Magos Vyakai, who answered the previous queries so quickly it seemed he needed almost no intervening time to formulate an answer, for the first time pauses. For several seconds he is silent, making his answer all the more unnerving to the two Astartes.
"Inconclusive. The datum you speak of is contaminated with the subjective accounts of an Adeptus Astartes legend, a heroic saga, that while representative of the militant mythos that your kind are fundamentally motivated by, leaves no verifiable first-hand account of its final outcome. Further circumstantial evidence uncovered in the intervening passage of time by both the Deathwatch and Adeptus Mechanicus Explorator fleets suggest that the heretek Magos Vayze survived the encounter with this Saint Enoch."
"I believe this to be factual data, as much as my pure cogitations wish this to be contradicted by extant evidence."
"I possess no context for this relic you speak of, but fragmentary and apocryphal accounts intimate that it was a weapon of some kind."
"Who is your colleague on Karack? Is there a relationship between him, the Karlack Imperial Guard regiment encountered on the moon Tantalus, and the Ore-Hauler that originated from the planet Aurum?"
"The colleague mentioned in my report to the Inquisitor is Magos Quezalt of the Geomancers of Vanity. To the best of my present knowledge he is still stationed upon the fortress world of Karlack researching seismic anomalies among the southern archipelagos of that world. No relationship exists between the Magos Quezalt and the Imperial Guard regiment, nor is there a relationship between the Magos Quezalt and the Shoulder of Stepatikos. I referred him to Inquisitor Carmillus soley as a viable authority for furthering examining the trace crystalline mineral compounds found on the vessel."
"Regarding data-core 88TK-366: is there additional data that remains unopened in my cogitator system? Am I privy to that data?"
"There is no additional data upon the datacore relevant to your inquiries. The datacore's primary data consists of biological observations and analyses of tissue samples from the vanguard organisms that assaulted Tantalus in the preliminary Tyranid attack on the moon. There is little in the data that would be relevant to your interests, designate Brother Emeric, Deathwatch/Originating Astartes chapter Black Templar. I predict with a considerable degree of certainty that the majority of this data is already privy to the Deathwatch based on prior confrontations with Hive Fleet Dagon."
"Finally, are you aware of any rumors regarding traitor presence here on Erioch?"
"Based on my present state of convalescence, I have not been afforded the opportunity to interface with sufficient data nodes to derive any knowledge of the present state of affairs within the Watch Fortress. In all probability, this data would not be privy to me even under the best of circumstances as the data looms and cogitator nodes of the Deathwatch are especially secure, overseen by their own dedicated order of indentured Magos Lexmechanica."

Having digested the responses of the Magos, I state, "In the name of the Omnissiah, I give thanks for our data communion. Magos Vyakai, do you have any interrogatives for myself or my companion?"
"My queries number only one, Brother Emeric, Deathwatch/Originating Astartes chapter Black Templar. Why has the Holy Ordos taken such an extraordinary interest in a relatively insignificant example of xenos fauna from a backwater world such as Aurum and its unexpected appearance on an Explorator ore hauler thought lost to the Warp? I calculate that the crystal remnants adhering to the dolinae's dermis are an important factor of consideration, but cannot cogitate the specific 'why' of the present conundrum."
There is a buzz of expelled static through the Magos' vox as he subtly adjusts his position on the extensive harness holding him in place over the boiling vat of machine oil in order to lean his head forward in a gesture of forced confidentiality that proves awkward, almost disturbing in its inherent lack of humanity to the two marines.
"Your proposed hypothesis, will, of course, be retained in my core cogitation engines with the utmost secrecy. I only seek to satisfy a niggling sense of curiosity in this matter."
When Magos Vyakai says the word, 'curiosity', you are fairly certain he speaks it with none of the normal human connotations that one would normally ascribe to such a concept, instead uttering it as an easy to comprehend place-holder for the baffling series of logic trees and data analyses his machine-mind is poring over as you speak. Rather than play out the combat against an inherently weaker foe, I've elected to describe the action below so that we can move along to the final scene before the first adventure of the Emperor Protects.
Back to back on the muddy jungle path, the two battle-brothers meet the frenzied assault of the Mahir Leapers, turning as one, in place, to face the wolfpack assault of their foe. Chainswords buzzing in counterpoint, the Storm Warden and Iron Snake dispatch the Tyranid, cleaving through bounding legs and nodule-covered carapaces in a symmetrical dance of violence that leaves their weapons and armor ichor-stained in steaming splashes of purple and black.
As their foes pile up around them, chainswords clogging with gore, the pair, by turns, magnetically clamp their weapons to their waists, drawing the long, tapering spears from over their respective shoulders. Brother Decius extends the long-hafted sea-lance favored by the Sons of Ithaka, stabbing outward with sharp jabs to keep the surviving 'gaunts at bay, all the while intoning the honored names of the dead brothers from his lost phratry, while Brother Caledonii lunges with the heavy lancea reforged by the techmarine, Mac Zi Ven, from the cold iron of his Sacris claymore. Turning on the handful of surviving predators as one, the pair thrust in tandem, impaling the remaining foes as they bound about madly, the sickening crunch of the Tyranid's pierced carapaces echoing loudly in the geodome. When the last of the xenos are dispatched, a gentle simulated rain begins to fall from the pipeworks hidden in the vaulted ceiling, the cool water raising a humid fog around the carnage.
Nearly exhausted, the pair clasp their gauntlets together in a bond of brotherhood, Caledonii now knowing that the Deathwatch's newest Battle-Brother is ready to swear his oath, and Decius realizing that this day truly marks the first among his new phratry, his purpose rededicated to Kill-Team Umbra and the sacred Vigil they have all sworn themselves to undertake for the good of the Emperor, Imperium, and mankind.

The Battle-Brothers of Kill-team Umbra breathe deeply of the sandalwood incense that suffuses the vast, cathedral-sized vault that holds the imposing doors to the Omega Vault, standing solemnly, in a place of honor, in the first rank of a phalanx of hundreds of fully armored Deathwatch marines, nearly the full complement of Astartes serving Vigil in Watch Fortess Erioch. Diverse chapters from across the Imperium, ranging from the Angels of Absolution to the White Scars are represented in the assemblage, a congregation of space marines gathered to bear witness to the most sacred ceremony of the Deathwatch, the Apocryphon Oath, whereby the newly indoctrinated Astartes seconded to the Deathwatch swear their oaths of loyalty to the chapter, thus beginning their Vigil.
It is a testament to the importance of the rite that only two marines presently kneel before the electroplated silver altar, itself shaped to resemble the archaic Terran rune, Ω, mirroring the sigil embossed upon the frowning doors towering before them. One is an Ultramarine, Brother Tavius, newly accepted into Kill-team Mordant, whose members stand reverently just to your right, also in a place of honor for the ceremony. The other is the Iron Snake, Decius, the sole survivor of Radiates squad, who has already earned in blood your respect and loyalty by his actions on Tantalus.
As the aforementioned completes his Oath of Binding, the sacred words which will forever seal his experiences in the Deathwatch behind a duly sworn secrecy; inviolate, Watch Commander Mordigael slowly steps forward. The Master of the Vigil is a tall man, and imposing, even amongst the other Astartes, his statuesque, alabaster-pale features giving him the appearance of a living saint, his grey eyes intense, seeming to smolder with a red, inner light that is something more than just the reflections of the brightly burning candelabra flanking the altar. The Blood Angel silently draws near the two initiates, his mere presence commanding the attention of all gathered.
After nodding to each Initiate in turn, Watch Captain Mordigael places one gauntleted hand upon the bare left shoulder of Brother Decius, his rich, baritone voice speaking the Apocryphon Oath, the his words carrying to the ears of all the faithful gathered before the Omega Vault.
"Hark ye who are pure in the eyes of the Emperor, hark now as I, your loyal auditor, recite this the Apocryphon Oath of one of his most glorious space marines. Let it be known by all dominions, powers, and authorities, that the bearer of this seal, Brother Decius, of the Iron Snakes chapter, has taken the most sacred Apocryphon Oath, and has been seconded to the Deathwatch until such time as his death or the specifics of his Oath shall be considered and proclaimed discharged."
"On the honor of your battle-brothers, your chapter, your Primarch, and the Emperor, you are sworn to destroy the alien, confront the myriad enemies of the Imperium, and obey the most solemn vows of the Apocryphon Conclave."
"You will watch in the dark places where evil slumbers, you will hold back the night, you will bring justice and war to the malevolent xenos, you will annihilate the vile xenos and bring unto them the judgement of mankind. You stand as the bulwark upon which the Imperium persists, from now until the end of time."
"The bearer of this oath shall be accorded the utmost honor in word and deed, let all know that the gaze of the Emperor and his Primarch shall follow the bearer wheresoever he may fall so that even in death his name shall be known."
"So it is sealed, by word, by blood, and by deed, by the authority of the Apocryphon Conclave, the order of the Deathwatch and by the Senatorum Imperialis."
He looks down, his eyes locking with Brother Decius.
"Do you so swear, Brother Decius of the Iron Snakes?"
Brother Decius, the proper refrain is: "I swear it."

Decius is in awe for a moment by the imposing image of Captain Mordiagael as he approaches him and touches his shoulder, he feels like he has been born again as a marine, like when he was inducted to be a brother of the snake, but now he is a member of the watch.

The ritual affixing of the pauldron is soon concluded with the second marine, and Watch Commander Mordigael returns to the altar. Raising both hands overhead, he bows his head in prayer. His voice then booms out through the vaulted chamber.
"Let us recite our sacred catechism, my brothers!"
The Initiates rise, joining their respective Kill-Teams, their Vigils begun. The Watch Commander then intones the Catechism of the Xenos, the scores of Deathwatch joining their own voices to his until the great cathedral-like vault rumbles with the thundrous words of their exhortations:
To be Unclean; That is the Mark of the Xeno
To be Impure; That is the Mark of the Xeno
To be Abhorred; That is the Mark of the Xeno
To be Reviled; That is the Mark of the Xeno
To be Hunted; That is the Mark of the Xeno
To be Purged; That is the fate of the Xeno
To be Destroyed; For that is the fate of all Xenos
Cursed is that which writhes in the dark places, we take up arms against it;
Cursed is the voice which whispers in the night, we drown out its lies with hymnals of battle;
Damned is he who pays heed to the word of the xenos, we bring justice, by sword, by shell, and by flame!
The hundreds of Astartes assembled then bang their right fists in unison; once, twice, thrice upon their breastplates in acclamation for their new brothers. The ceremony now at its conclusion, many of those in the audience let out more informal cheers and words of encouragment, and Brothers Decius and Tavius find theirs hearts swelling with pride.
The moment is one that the Iron Snake wishes would last forever, but in his own recent, painful experience, he knows that nothing ever does...
A great booming toll, as loud as if the very Watch Fortess itself was a titanic bell, sounds from behind the altar and the senior officers of the Deathwatch standing before it. The Watch Commander himself turns slowly toward the towering doors behind him, and the gaze of all the others follow as one. The massive vault, moments ago filled with the cheers of countless space marines, now is deathly silent but for the clockwork grinding of ancient machinery within the doors to the Omega Vault.
Kill-Team Umbra looks on in mute awe with all the rest as the monumental doors slowly begin to open.
Brother Quintus |
I think of all my honored Brother Hyzeron told me. He predicted this opening of the Omega Vault. What would it be like to be attuned to something so sacred to what we are in Deathwatch? What will it reveal this time and to whom? Will anyone from our kill team be the ones to enter? That would be a great honor to whomever does and bring great renown to those people.
Brother Emeric |
During the ceremony I use a sub-routine to meditate upon the words of the Magos, honored to gain an ally against the Imperium's foes:
"May the Omnissiah guide you in the course of your investigations Brother Emeric, Deathwatch/Originating Astartes chapter Black Templar."
Now as the prodigious, enigmatic doors to the Omega Vault begin to open, I give thanks to my Emperor for this apocryphal moment. This magnificent construct--The Vault!--To know its secrets, its inner workings; what data it must contain!
You direct our footsteps along the Path of Knowledge.
Caledonii |
While the ceremony is proceeding, I am proud and honored to have been chosen to be the one to train one who is now accepted as one of us. I was one of the few that let out a cheer, maybe it was the pre-ceremony celebration drink but it is good the be forged anew.
For whom the bell tolls, time has marched on and the Vault has opened. I feel it in my soul that this is the reason for my training and to have completed it at this time.
I turn toward the door and look upon what the Emperor has deemed for us to see.
Brother Decius |
Lost in the booming voices as I become one with them, knowing well that nothing may last forever but, it can be remembered for ever.
Then following in silent like most of my new brothers as they all some awe strike looking at the door opening as if hoping the Emperor himself would walk out of them... I have these awe sensation but I do not understand why... Is is another vision or am I just being drowned by the feelings of all my brothers?...

The Master of the Vigil stands with his back to the dumbfounded Deathwatch marines of Watch Fortress Erioch, staring mutely into the dimly lumen-lit breach that now stands open between the forty-meter tall doors flanked by the massive colonnade. From somewhere deep within the Omega Vault, a final, lingering screech of metal upon metal sounds, the echo of whatever mechanism made it carrying to the assembled Astartes before the silence fades into something more absolute.
No one dares move or breathe, following the lead of Watch Commander Mordigael, who stands motionless, thirty paces from the swirling corona of translucent dust that is backlit by the wan light emanating from gap in the open doors. Just as some of the honor guard begin to stir, turning their helmeted heads toward their sergeants looking for direction, the entire audience hears the resounding footfalls of a sole marine, as one of your brethren steps free of the awestruck audience and makes his way with confidence toward the Watch Commander. Arius Hyzeron stops just behind him, the ancient Ultramarine inclining his head to whisper into Mordigael's ear. After a long moment, the Watch Commander slowly, hesitantly nods in agreement. He turns to face the Deathwatch again, and Quintus notes how his elder chapter-brother stares directly at him, saying nothing, but communicating volumes, nevertheless.
Watch Commander Mordigael's steely gaze looks out over his brethren, his resolve calming them and redirecting their focus. The honor guard comes to attention again, and the Blood Angel casts his flinty eyes upon the individuals comprising the two Kill-teams, Umbra, and Mordant, and their newly seconded members.
"My Brothers, it is not my place, nor is it within my meager capabilities to interpret the will of the Omega Vault. What we witness here this day is an event whose great significance may very well not be known for many Vigils yet, but its import is nothing short of monumental whatever the outcome may be. We all know the words graven in that great lintel, we all know full well the mysteries it contains and how they have served the Long Watch over the millennia. This being said, not since the time of Watch Commander Prascus have the doors opened during the ceremony of the Apocryphon Oath. What tidings this signifies, again, I cannot presume to know."
He glances meaningfully toward Brother Hyzeron to his right before continuing, the barest hint of reluctance in his voice.
"What I do know, is that Brother Hyzeron was at his side that day, as he is at ours this day, and my predecessor, long may his name be remembered, sent forth two of his Kill-teams to investigate what mysteries the Vault would reveal."
Many of the renowned and veteran Kill-teams in attendance hear these words and stand at fuller attention, expectant, eager even, to see whom among their number will bear the great honor of entering the Omega Vault.
"That fateful day, Watch Commander Prascus deigned to send forth two Kill-teams whose membership had so recently been bolstered by honored brothers just come to their Vigil, brothers who had just sworn their Oaths, and I mean to do the same."
The pale, sculpted visage of the tall Blood Angel stares coldly out over the surprised susurrus that passes over the assemblage of Deathwatch, his presence along commanding silence with nothing more than a glance.
Satisfied, he turns to Brother Quintus, of Umbra, and the Dark Son, Brother Ghaeman, leader of Kill-team Mordant.
"Brother-Sergeants, prepare your men, and find what secrets the Vault would reveal to us on this sacred day."
Brother Decius |
True happiness stems only for duty as Decius steps forwards nodding to his new brothers intoning the Litany of Devotion
As he looks towards the vault.
Where there is uncertainty, I shall bring light
As he looks towards all present.
Where there is doubt, I shall sow faith
Closing his eyes for a moment, remembering his fallen brothers.
Where there is shame, I shall point atonement
Controlling his hatred for the Xenos when remembering his fallen brothers.
Where there is rage, I shall show its course
Taking up his bolter and standing at the ready nodding to Brother-Sergeant Quintus.
My word in the soul shall be as my bolter in the field.

Hour 24 System Sidereal Time
With the eyes of nearly all of Watch Fortress Erioch upon them, the two Kill-teams, Umbra and Mordant, walk in unison from the front of the assemblage toward the open doors. As they pass the Watch Commander, Mordigael locks eyes with each battle-brother, his stern countenance as inscrutable as a statue of pale marble, judging their resolve with nothing more than the smoldering intensity of his gaze. Each looks upon the gauntlet crushing the serpent on his pauldron, unique heraldry to the Master of the Vigil, and they bow their heads respectfully as they pass.
As they walk by, Brother Quintus and the newly sworn youth, Brother Tavius, are each acknowledged with solemn nods from their chapter-brother, Arius Hyzeron. The elder Ultramarine even drops Quintus an uncharacteristic wink from his good eye after Tavius passes and the small gesture does much to bolster his confidence, dissolving whatever self-doubt may have troubled him and girding his readiness for whatever may await.
Last to follow, Brother Vex notices Epistolary Axineton detach himself from the row of senior Deathwatch and approach the Watch Commander, exasperation and a measure of irritation plainly etched on the White Consul's lean face. He shows the proper decorum in waiting for the two Kill-teams to pass, but it is clear as he moves to engage the Blood Angel that he means to make his displeasure with the unfolding events known to Mordigael. He spares Lyriel a sharp, reproving glare, perhaps a vestige of their last conversation, and then begins whispering to the Watch Commander, arms crossed over his armor, his words now inaudible with the distance.
The rest of Umbra regard their fellows in Mordant as they walk in near lockstep toward the Vault, noting their erstwhile allies are the smaller Kill-team, comprised of only five marines, including their newest member, the Ultramarine, Tavius.
Leading them is Brother-Sergeant Ghaeman of the Dark Sons, a stolid, uncompromising marine, dark complected, with a tonsure of white hair fringing his blocky skull. He is known to be a proud leader of men, and staunch adherent to the Codex who brooks no argument with his authority, authority that is duly respected for a wealth of experience fighting in the various warzones of the Reach.
His second is the rough-looking and ruddy Brother Drogan of the Hammer's of Dorn. With hair as black as ash, his perpetually smirking features are underscored by the pale, arcing scars that crisscross his stubbly chin. There is something unkempt about him, and he is said to crudely opinionated, but there is thought to be no shrewder tactician when it comes to siege warfare in all of Erioch.
He is followed by the tall, gaunt-faced figure of a techmarine that is as much machine as man. The Son of Medusa's impeccably maintained armor is stamped on the right pauldron with the open silver palm of the tenth legion, the Iron Hands. Towering over the other marines, his articulated servo-arm folded by his side, Brother Ius is an intimidating presence, only a thin strip of pale flesh visible between the green glow of his tri-ocular cybernetic eyes and the imposing steel grillwork of the vox-modulator covering his chin and mouth. His head rotates mechanically atop his shoulders to look upon Brother Emeric for a moment as the pair walk side by side, but the sphinx-like battle-brother betrays nothing of what he thinks or feels.
Just behind the techmarine comes a sallow-skinned brute; a braided, beaded, jet-black topknot jutting from the back of his bare skull like the aft-array of an Imperial battleship. His eyes are narrow and his pronouncedly feral appearance is only off-set by the fact that Brother-Librarian Kuzhuk is known to possess a scholarly mien that belies his savage visage. A battle-brother serving in the Reach is unlikely to encounter a more courteous and insightful member of the White Scars, or any other chapter, for that matter. He smiles amiably at his fellows in Umbra as they walk, his teeth, filed to points, creating an interesting dichotomy between the outer and inner self.
Finally comes Tavius, matching Brother Decius stride for stride, his handsome features and shaven skull are typical for his chapter, but he shows an easy confidence that still remains respectfully deferential to his brethren. Sturdy and proud as any Son of Gulliman, he glances over at the Iron Snake with a look of disbelieving chagrin, and the pair share a smile at the honor that comes with the endeavor they are about to embark upon.
Drawing near to the opening, the two Kill-teams halt as one, the narrow aperture between the partially opened Vault doors, which once appeared so small from a distance, seems like a yawning gulf of more than a dozen meters now that they are close. It impresses upon the Astartes just how enormous the adamantine-girded portals are. A dull golden glow permeates the gap before them, corona-like, making what waits beyond difficult to see.
By turns, each marine looks up toward the enigmatic High Gothic words graven into the colossal lintel, "And the Last Fortress Is Truth."
Feel free to interact with the battle-brothers of Kill-team Mordant if you choose. Ghaeman and Quintus should determine together how you will all proceed. Consider yourselves girded for battle and equipped with your standard armaments.
Brother Decius |
Decius walks in line wondering how Quintus is now the leader Does the Deathwatch changes Sergeants this often? Did my brother failed and he is being punished? questions in his face are only masked by his helmet but he does wonder as he keeps the pace with the rest looking at the other marines that were also granted the honors to enter the vault.
"Brother Tavius" Decius turn to look at Tavius not sure if his thoughts are also distant "Beat your thoughts to the mould of your will Tavius" saying it more for himself probably than for brother Tavius "Just remember the deeds of one warrior can alter the course of a battle. We are 13 of those men and our every deed right now changes the shape of history and the galaxy".
As Decius intones one of the litanies in the voice vox that all can hear.
"Born in darkness, a dream given life,
Holy warriors to bring forth the light.
Armed with zeal, armoured with faith,
Gods of battle at teh fore of the fight.
Swords of the emperor, shields of mankind,
destined for war, fated for death.
Protectors of the weak, slayers of evil,
we fight til we draw our last dying breath
There is no retreat, there is no surrender,
our hate of the foe drives us eternally on
while aliens live, while heresy festers,
there can be no peace until the last war is won.
Strengthen your heart harden your soul,
launch yourself gladly into death's hungry maw.
There is no time for peace, no respite, no forgiveness,
there is only war."

Lyriel Vex |
I nod respectfully as I pass the Watch Commander, and Epistolary. I take heed of Axineton's continued animosity towards me. I will have to consider my next steps carefully with him. I do not know why he has such an enmity with me. But its clear it may have a future effect on me being able to perform my duties. This is a problem. I have to consider carefully if I should confront him and dissolve the issue directly, or perform research first to see why he would hate one who would be his ally, and to let it effect his judgement.
Not being one much for words, and knowing how sacred of a role, and the task that lies before us. I bow to each Battle Brother of Kill Team Mordant reverently. Forever more our two squads will be linked together by this event. We can share words and oaths of brotherhood later. Now there is only duty.
Slowly and gradually I open up my mind into the Vault before me. Listening for shrouded whispers or longing songs of artifacts waking from there slumber. Connecting with the world around me as only a Telepath can.
Brother Hrothgar |
Hrothgar looks at the members of Kill Team Mordant and accesses their strengths and weaknesses. Though they are Astartes, they are not of the pack yet. Russ' gift to his sons is not without its peculiarities.
Hrothgar's world view is heavily influenced by the scents he perceives and this momentous occasion is no different as he sniffs the chamber's atmosphere. Is there something that should not be there?

Hour 24 System Sidereal Time
With the expectant eyes of their brethren upon them, the two columns of marines pass through the opening in the titanic doors, without fear, but not without a certain feeling of trepidation. They have all heard the hushed stories spoken by their fellows in the Deathwatch about the enigma that is the Omega Vault, the ineluctable presence it possesses at the heart of Watch Fortress Erioch, almost like a living thing, by turns cryptic and prescient, but never had they thought they would be setting foot within the confines of the greatest mystery in all the Jericho Reach.
Stopping just inside, they find themselves in a corridor that can only be described as interminable. As wide and tall as the outer doors are high, it shines, in gleaming adamant metal, stretching as far as even the augmented eyes of the space marines can see in the distance. Great curving buttresses support the mirror-bright apex of the corridor, but there is no extraneous adornment or decoration to be seen. On either side of this primary hall, are hundreds, if not thousands of smaller vault doors, that stretch away into the vanishing point ahead. Each is similar in structure to the main doors of the vault, but perhaps a third the size, cast in adamantine plating, and arching framing of the same alloy, with no visible means of ingress. The diffuse light within the vault seems to emanate from nowhere in particular, but illuminates things with the brightness of daylight, albeit with a wan and dreamlike quality, rendering what is visible to the marines with disconcertingly softened edges. There is a sterility to the air that reminds Brother Syne of the most pristine of medicaes, along with the barest scent of something that seems to hint at antiquity and ancient things.
I look to Brother Ghaeman, "I would suggest your Kill-Team cover the left flank and mine cover the right, with our librarians searching for whatever The Vault is to reveal to us, while we cover them."
Brother Ghaeman's eyes, squinting as he looks into the middle distance of the impossibly long corridor, turn slowly to Brother Quintus, as if awakening from a fugue of sorts. His dark eyes quickly regain their sharp focus, along with the stern set of his jaw, while the wrinkles around his mouth twitch with a barely glimpsed embarrassment at being distracted, even if only momentarily.
"I concur, Brother Quintus. Mordant; to arms, Brother-Librarian Kuzhuk: what mysteries, if any, does this hallowed place speak to you?"
Decius turn to look at Tavius, not sure if his thoughts are also distant. "Beat your thoughts to the mould of your will Tavius", saying it more for himself probably than for the Ultramarine. "Just remember the deeds of one warrior can alter the course of a battle. We are 13 of those men and our every deed right now changes the shape of history and the galaxy".
The young Ultramarine nods, his heavy bolter gripped in both hands, eyes scanning the endless corridor with the others.
"Wise words, my brother. I think I feel the weight of history bearing down upon me even as we speak, I must confess it makes my bolter feel but a trifle in comparison."
As Brother Decius and the other marines who took up his litany finish speaking it, a hush falls over the Vault that seems to swallow up even the louder sounds of the marines adjusting their armaments.

Test successful.
With almost simultaneous precision, both Brother Emeric and the Iron Hand techmarine, Brother Ius, consult their respective auspex equipment. Despite all signs showing that the devices are working within proper operating parameters, what each reveals is nearly incomprehensible. All manner of impossible fluctuations of each and every measurable quantity; be it electromagnetic, radiological, sensory, or temporal is occurring all around them, and just as quickly as it spikes to immeasurable quantities, it returns to perfectly normal levels before repeating the bizarre cycling. Neither the Templar nor his counterpart in Mordant has ever seen anything quite like it. They turn to look at one another in silence, their mute exchange unnerving to witness for the other Battle-Brothers.

Unlike Brother Syne and the others, Brother Hrothgar's olfactory senses go beyond the superhuman to something bordering on the supernatural in sensitivity. He draws the air deeply into his lungs and expels it, savoring the residual aromas and identifying them each in turn: Dust, older than any he has ever smelled before, unguents and oils he associates with the cunning machines of the Iron Priests, but of a richness he is entirely unfamiliar with, and finally, the dessicated smell of dry parchment, tomb-like in its faintness. What Brother Syne smells as sterility, overrides everything else to the Space Wolf, but it is not precisely sterility that he smells. No, it is something that he has inhaled only once before, but it was a memorable experience. A stasis vault, freshly opened by his chapter to retrieve a treasured artifact lodged in the deepest bowels of the Fang. The smell of timelessness and eternity itself made manifest. The Omega Vault smells of it, almost overpoweringly.
