Round #5
Battlemap

Conditions:

  • Scale: Each square = 2 meters.
  • Fortified Plateau: Kill-team Umbra has had time to prepare the Southern Plateau with earthworks, trenches, and foxholes, transforming this patch of arctic waste into a redoubt against the Tyranid assault. Any space marine participating in this combat may use the Tactical Advance action as either a Half Action or a Full Action, so long as they remain in the immediate vicinity of the plateau.
  • Icy Bolt-Holes: Battle-brothers remaining in the darkened trench areas gain the benefit of Cover equivalent to thick ice (AP = 8). Even those battle-brothers roaming the plateau can gain the benefit of lesser wind-blown ice outcroppings (AP = 4). The tracked hauler provides an AP = 8 for anyone inside.
  • Mole Mortar!: Karlack 2nd BS = 35, Rof: S/-/-, Damage: 2d10+2 X, Pen: 2, Clip: 1, Rld: Full, Special: Inaccurate, Shocking, Blast (4).
Once per round (the crew has an experienced loader and spotter, allowing reloads each round) Brother Quintus can designate a target for the Mole Mortar set up inside the tracked hauler. As the mortar has a minimum range of 50m, the target must be part of the encroaching horde (excluding enemy forces on the plateau). The mortar applies its damage to either of the two Vanguard Hordes, each possessing a Magnitude of 60.
  • Vanguard Hordes:Two Immense (+40 to hit), Magnitude 60 Tyranid Vanguard Hordes comprised of termagants and hormagaunts begin the battle 6 rounds away from contact with the Kill-team. These Tyranid are the probing, feral tip of the swarm's southern spearhead, and thus are not bio-modified to possess ranged weaponry. They may be fired upon normally. For rounds 1-3 they are considered at Extreme Range (-30 to hit), 4-6 Long Range (-10 to hit).

Even as their numbers dwindle, the remaining hormagaunts rabidly press their attack on Brother Vex. The Librarian continues to hold off the horde singlehandedly, hewing and slashing as they come at him from all sides.

Hormagaunt Horde #1 attacks Brother Vex:

WS = 45, 1d100 ⇒ 89, a miss.

Caledonii is next

As Brother Quintus and the rest of the marines on the plateau turn their attention to exterminating the last of the hormagaunts bedeviling Brother Vex, brothers Emeric and Hrothgar gaze across the vast ice plain to the south, their eyes drawn to the uncountable thousands of scuttling forms that now blanket the horizon as far as the eye can see. The leading elements of the host are fully visible now, the vanguard driven ahead at the urging of the hive-mind to exterminate the troublesome and tenaciously resistant blot of biomatter that Kill-team Umbra and their allies represent. The precursor is comprised predominantly of the gaunt genus, but the techmarine quickly begins to lose count of how many warrior organisms are interspersed throughout their ranks.

Challenging [+0] Awareness tests for Brother Emeric and Hrothgar.

Still about half a kilometer away, the battle-brothers recognize the true test is yet to come, and they have precious little time remaining to redeploy and prepare for their final stand.

The vanguard hordes will appear on the bottom edge of the map at the beginning of Round #6. Assuming that the Kill-team will finish the remnants of Hormagaunt Horde #1 in short order, everyone can then reposition on the battlemap in a square of their choosing. The horde can even be fired upon at this distance this round, provided everyone who chooses to do so delays until the end of the round. Consider the vanguard Tyranids as within Long Range (-10 to BS) for weapons with 100m range or better, such as heavy bolters or bolters. This is at Extreme Range (-30) for every weapon with less than 100m range, such as bolt pistols.

The sheer volume of the swarming, chaotic mass makes it impossible for my cogitation banks to quantify the horde... My visual field is also overwhelmed by the targeting feedback given by Ferocitas' reticule.

I briefly spy that the battle has stopped all across the plateau except for my melee with the remaining Xenos. I expect my battle brothers to concentrate there efforts to defend against the next wave thats approachs in the distance. Its my responsibility to finish off the filth here.

Weapon Skill (1d100=19)

No matter what tactic I use these gaunts seem to predict my actions before I make them. Minimizing there loses with each of my swings. The Hive Mind is a dangerous foe indeed.

Male Storm warden Tactical Marine

Seeing the last of the gargoyles drop from the sky I move to side of the Magos and take up a guard position. "Brother Vex I do not have a clear line of fire I am moving to support."

Dark Angel Librarian

"Brother Caledonii I will finish the Xenos off soon enough. Set up leading fire to draw the oncoming horde into the mines we placed in sectors beta, delta and epsilon."

Awareness test successful, Hrothgar.

His eyes keener than the rest, Hrothgar stares intently at the crawling landscape from hell that are the Tyranid, his gaze drawn from the writhing ground to a black blot in the sky flying quickly across the kilometers wide no-man's-land between the limitless horde toward the smaller, albeit only proportionally so, vanguard swarm. He allows himself a weakness, the momentary, blossoming hope that it is the Thunderhawk inbound to extract them, and deliver them from this doom.

His hopes are quickly dashed the longer he looks at the shape.

Steeling himself, he accepts the truth of the matter.

It is no Thunderhawk.

A chatter of corrupted binary is received in response to the techmarine's transmission, and the wounded shell of the Magos slowly moves into position as directed, accepting Brother Emeric's command with an obedient submissiveness that would be unheard of if the Magos was still in control.

Settling into position, the Black Templar reloads his weapon, hissing a benediction to the Omnissiah as he performs the proper blessings of rearming.

Brother Vex, assuming an All Out Attack with the forcesword (no sense in saving a Reaction to Dodge or Parry, since you can't against a horde anyway) means a modified WS of 62, this results in four degrees of success, yielding 3 hits to Magnitude total, reducing Hormagaunt Horde #2, to 2 Magnitude remaining.

The psy-active crystalline matrix in the forcesword crackles to life as it hisses through the cold air, severing the limbs and thoraxes of the xenos as the Librarian scythes a twisting path through their ranks. Ichor splashes and sizzles on the weapon, until only a handful remain to menace Brother Vex.

Remember, anyone with a Reaction remaining for Fire For Effect can use a single shot action at any time, up until the end of this round.

Eli is able to use both his standard attack and reaction to take single shots with his heavy bolter. Since he will likely be targeting the vanguard swarms, I'll wait till the bottom of the round for bookkeeping purposes.

So the omen shown to me before in the form of a great sea serpent it was our foe looking towards Hrothgar Sign your hymns of valor and courage for this is day shall be remembered when we vanquish this xenos filth

Shouldering his bolter again, the apothecary strides fearlessly toward Brother Vex and the remaining hormagaunts, loosing a flurry of single rounds that burst each 'Nid they strike in a splash of ichor and chitin fragments.

BS = 49, +20 (Full-Auto Burst), +30 (Point Blank Range), -20 (Firing Into Melee), modified BS = 79, rolling 1d100 ⇒ 35, hit, with four degrees of his success, yielding four hits.

*Righteous Fury, 1d10 ⇒ 9.

The cooly composed lethality and precision of the Blood Angel's fire is astounding to behold, particularly as he has just emerged from such willful, wanton, and nigh-berserk slaughter with his chainsword against the scuttling foes. Brother Vex impales the last of the creatures as Brother Sepheren moves into position beside him to face the oncoming foe.

Hormagaunt Horde #1 has been eliminated.

With a juddering whump! of the ground around the fortified hauler, the Karlack 2nd fire their mole mortar again, the remaining guardsmen inside all moving to the firing ports on the south side of the vehicle. Inside can be heard the hoarse shouts of sergeants barking discipline and orders to reload.

BS = 35, -10 (Long Range), +40 (Horde Size), modified BS = 65, 1d100 ⇒ 31, a hit.

After finding the range again, the crew of the artillery score a bullseye, the munition exploding audibly some distance away, the individual broken body parts of the slain gaunts now clearly visible as they plume upward into the air with the resultant explosion. There is no cheer from the guardsmen this time, only the hurried sounds of crew frantically trying to load one final shell before the hungry wave crashes against their redoubt.

Rolling damage, 2d10 + 2 ⇒ (4, 2) + 2 = 8, enough to penetrate AP and TB for the Vanguard Horde. Vanguard Horde #1 sustains 5 Magnitude damage (4 for Blast (4) +1 for the Explosive Quality).

His heavy bolter once more ready for action, Eli reaches out to gauge the reactions of his battle-brothers.

Cohesion Challenge = 1d10=10 (FAILURE)

Taking time to review the squad's position, he faces back to the battle and looses a single shot into the approaching mob.

Fire for Effect to make a standard attack against damaged horde:

BS - Long Range + Horde Size = 51 - 10 + 30 = 71 : 1d100=25

Hit:
Blast (3)
Hellfire
Explosive

Since the minimum damage of 12 is enough to cause damage to the termagants and hormagaunts, the attack causes either 7 or 8 damage to the horde's magnitude (depending on whether the x2 multiplier for hellfire rounds is done before or after the hit from explosive damage is added)

Dark Angel Librarian

Seeing Sepheron decimate the remaining gaunts I take a quick look at the cliff face above looking for the Thunderhawk. It would be suicide for it to come from the same vantage point as the Tyranid Horde. I then settle my gaze on the horizon looking to use the fire from my bolter to thin the living mass that approachs our position.

"Thank you brother."

Kill-Team Umbra, Rook:

Round 5 Actions:

Caledonii - Moved
Decius - No actions
Eli - Cohesion Challenge, Fire for Effect reaction attack
Emeric - Failed awareness check, moved
Hrothgar - Successful awareness check
Lyriel - Melee attack
Quintus - Gave commands to Kill-Team
Sepheren - Full-auto fire

Rook, correct me if I'm wrong but Decius, Eli, Hrothgar, and Quintus can still make long-ranged (-10) ranged attacks on the vanguard hordes this round. Decius, Hrothgar, and Quintus can still make single shot Fire for Effect shots. Can Caledonii, Emeric, and Sepheren (who technically made a move according to the post) also make reaction shots this round?

Kill-team Umbra, Eradico:
Thanks for summarizing those actions for me Eradico, I'll post this early so everyone who has not taken their action has the opportunity to do so between now and my regular posting time tonight.

Brother Decius, Brother Quintus, and Brother Hrothgar are all eligible to make an attack on the Vanguard Hordes. Of these three, only Hrothgar cannot take his Fire For Effect action (he just took it after your post, to be resolved forthwith).

Looking at the distance of his move to the front ranks, Brother Caledonii likely took a Full Action, but would still be eligible for the single shot Reaction on the hordes.

Emeric would also be eligible for the Reaction shot (I'd adjudicate his move was also a Full Action, combined with redirecting the Magos on his position).

Sepheren wouldn't be allowed a Reaction shot as well, because of his position on the plateau, somewhat in a deadzone, precludes line of sight. As he also took a Full Action to fire on Full-Auto, this would necessitate movement of some kind on his part to get a clear shot (Decius has this option, Sepheren does not, my mention of movement for the Blood Angel was more flavor text than anything).

For Brother Eli, he has taken his Fire For Effect shot, and I believe he was holding his actual attack for the end of fhe round.

Brother Vex, completing a Full Action melee attack, is done for the round.

As a reminder, all of the attacks with bolters would be at Long Range (-10) and Extreme Range (-30) for bolt pistols.

Hopefuly this clears things up a little bit.

I will assume the +30 for horde and the -30 for range with the bolt pistol, cancel. BS(55) = 1d100 ⇒ 27 for a hit. Damage = 2d10 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6, tearing die = 1d10 ⇒ 8 + 5 = 16. Using kraken rounds increases AP to 8 and increases range by 50%.

As Kill-team Umbra move into position, Brother Decius cannot help but be reminded of the seas of Ithaka, so vast is the host. It is as if a great tsunami of blackish-orange claws and talons is surging across the snowy plain, just moments away from cresting upon their stolid, yet miniscule breakwater of battle-brothers. He fires into the massed horde of xenos just the same, but cannot help but reflect upon the futility of the gesture, like a man trying to bale out all the waters of an ocean with a paltry thimble.

Damage is 26, enough to inflict a Magnitude hit, coupled with the Explosive quality, that is 2 Magnitude damage to Vanguard Horde #1.

Standing resolute in the midst of his brethren, Brother Quintus toggles the fire selector on his bolt pistol and fires at the scuttling edge of the xenos nightmare just as it reaches the base of the plateau. He scarcely has to aim the ground is so thick with the things and his round tears half the head from a Tyranid warrior laboring up the slope in a sea of termagants.

Damage is sufficient, 2 more Magnitude damage to Vanguard Horde #1.

As soon as the Magos moves into position behind him, Brother Emeric opens fire as well, his rounds ripping through the front ranks of the host, impossible to miss from higher ground as the swell of xenos laps against the jagged edges of the frozen massif.

Emeric, adding Higher Ground [+10], your attack just manages to hit, 1d10 ⇒ 8, 1d10 ⇒ 7, + Tearing: 1d10 ⇒ 2, +5 = 20. Enough to inflict 2 more Magnitude to Vanguard Horde #1.

At this great distance, the Brother Hrothgar cannot be certain he has struck his mythical dragon, either that or it paid the wound no mind. Beating its titanic wings high over the thousands of swarming Tyranid behind the vanguard hordes, the Space Wolf now gains a sense of its scale. He is beginning to think this one will be large enough for his saga.

Damage was absorbed by AP and TB of the target.

As I understand it, Brother Hrothgar and Brother Syne can still make their standard attacks and that will then conclude the round.

Eli failed a Cohesion Challenge and spent a full round action entering squad mode.

My fault Ellipsis, I mistakenly had you in Squad Mode already on the wiki, but that would have precluded Immovable Warrior. I was wondering why you attempted the Cohesion Challenge. Alternately, if you wish to retain your action, you can enter Squad Mode by spending a Fate Point. Either way, I will show you in Squad Mode now.

The Dark Angel's heavy bolter fires, the mutagenic acids spraying in a fanning arc from the cannister-sized round on impact, incinerating the many Tyranid gaunts in its path, their faint squeals of mindless agony just audible to the distant marine's autosenses.

Explosive Quality damage is added after doubling, Eli, so the damage to Vanguard Horde #1 is 7.

Total damage inflicted to Vanguard Horde #1 at this round comes to 18, reducing the horde to 32. Vanguard Horde #2 remains at full strength, at 60 Magnitude.

Damage sufficient, 2 more Magnitude inflicted to Vanguard Horde #1.

Male Storm warden Tactical Marine

I quickly check the ammo count for the metal storm rounds and sigh at the remaining count. I only have 2 full bursts and either 2 single shots or a single semi auto burst. I will have to make them count. I swivel around to the larger horde with so many it will be hard to miss all of them I just hope it will be enough.

"Gentlemen lets make our Primearch's proud and the Emperor smile down upon us." then with a shout "For the Emperor!" I open fire.

*Typical Bolter Fire Full-Auto Burst, 1 extra hit per 1 degree of success:*

BS =36 , +20 (Full-Auto Burst), +40 (size), modified BS = 96, rolling 1d100 ⇒ 30, hit/miss.

*Typical Bolter Damage, Full-Auto Burst, Best two of three damage rolls::*

Damage:

1d10 ⇒ 1, 1d10 ⇒ 1, Tearing Die: 1d10 ⇒ 9, +3, =13 Damage. Pen 3 Blast 2

1d10 ⇒ 6, 1d10 ⇒ 2, Tearing Die: 1d10 ⇒ 10, +3,+* = 24 Damage.Pen 3 Blast 2

1d10 ⇒ 6, 1d10 ⇒ 7, Tearing Die: 1d10 ⇒ 6, +3, = 16 Damage.Pen 3 Blast 2

1d10 ⇒ 10, 1d10 ⇒ 3, Tearing Die: 1d10 ⇒ 1, +3,+** = 18 Damage.Pen 3 Blast 2

Fury 1d10 ⇒ 5*
Fury 1d10 ⇒ 2**

Dark Angel Librarian

If I read right it looks like the two Hordes will be upon us this round. So since I just finished melee I think it would be silly to switch to the bolter. So I will stay with the force sword and the bolt pistol. Also can I get my free shot with the bolt pistol ,(Fire for Effect), along with my psychic power?

The air crackles around me as droplets of ice form and shatter as I draw together my psychic engeries into the uncoming mass of Xenos filth.

Focus Power Test (1d100=25)

Releasing it as a bolt of divine wrath into the heart of the horde as I am an agent of the Emperors Divine Will. An Angel of Death that shows no mercy to his enemies. May the Emperors Will be done!

Smite (3d10=20)

I rolled 1 crit, so did 4 Magnitude of Damage to the Horde with Death is Joy for my Power Armour. Also do an additional 1d10 hits to hordes as per psychic power damage against hordes. DH Rulebook page 360

Additional Hits Against Horde Magnitude (1d10=9)

So a total of 13 Magnitude in Damage against horde #2.

EDIT: Almost forgot will try to focus my smite to force the horde into the mines we set up earlier.

Crouching into a firing stance, the Storm Warden takes care to squeeze off a controlled burst of his rapidly diminishing Metal Storm rounds into the larger mass of Tyranid clawing their way up the slope. The frangible rounds shred the massed xenos as they explode in succession, the pained keening of the horrors becoming as music to the grizzled veteran's ears.

All damage sufficient to overwhelm AP and TB. Metal Storm means Blast (2) for four separate rounds, yielding 8 Magnitude damage, one more damage for the Explosive Quality of the bolter, for a total of 9 damage to Magnitude to Vanguard Horde #2.

His force sword still humming in one hand and his armor splashed and sizzling from the toxic ichor of his fallen foes, Brother Librarian Lyriel Vex strides to the very edge of the plateau, pointing the blade aloft while dredging psychic force through the skein of the Immaterium. Like a lightning rod, his sword flares with a nimbus of purplish light, crackling with power, before he finally levels the weapon in the direction of the Tyranid host and unleashes spiraling bolts of baleful witchfire. The resultant damage to the clambering Tyranid is devastating, ripping them asunder and tossing their lifeless shells back down the slope, one after another.

Smite is successful and deals 13 Magnitude damage to Vanguard Horde #2. Vanguard Horde #2 now has a Magnitude of 38.

As the first wave of gaunts crests the edge of the plateau, completely undeterred by the attrition they have suffered at the hands of the resolute Astartes, the Karlack 2nd opens fire. The pulsing flare of their las weapons from the hauler's gunsports and the juddering rumble of the mole mortar, firing for perhaps the last time, remind Kill-team Umbra they do not make their stand alone.

BS = 35, -10 (Long Range), +40 (Horde Size), modified BS = 65, 1d100 ⇒ 29, a hit.

Rolling damage, 2d10 + 2 ⇒ (8, 3) + 2 = 13, enough to penetrate AP and TB for the Vanguard Horde. Vanguard Horde #1 sustains 5 Magnitude damage (4 for Blast (4) +1 for the Explosive Quality).

The mortar shell bursts from the tall, columnar icicles draping the steep face of the plateau, exploding in an airburst of shrapnel along with jagged shards of ice and stone in every direction. For every 'Nid blown apart, still more of their relentless numbers scamper up and over the carcasses of their dead, using their very casualties to aid their ascent.

When they become visible, the guardsman open fire with a synchronized fusillade.

BS = 35, +10 (Semi-Auto Burst), +40 (size) +10 (Short Range), modified BS = 95, rolling, 1d100 ⇒ 52, a hit, with four degrees of success, yielding three hits.

Rolling damage, 2d10 + 3 ⇒ (10, 9) + 3 = 22
Rolling damage, 2d10 + 3 ⇒ (1, 4) + 3 = 8
Rolling damage, 2d10 + 3 ⇒ (1, 10) + 3 = 14

Each damage roll is sufficient to cause Magnitude damage, 3 more Magnitude damage is inflicted to Vanguard Horde #1.

The first ten termagants to scuttle over the lip of the plateau's edge meet a veritable wall of fire that blows off limbs, burns through bonded exoskeletons, and reduces some of the Tyranid outright to little more than blasted chitin and ash. Commissar Sanders continues to exhort his men to die with valor, firing his own pistol from the makeshift hatch in the roof of their armored strongpoint.

Almost like a servitor slaved to Brother Emeric, the redundant subroutines running Magos Vyakai cause the tech-priest to swivel in place where he too hovers above the ground, tracking a Tyranid warrior as it makes for the Astartes battle-line. With a searing roar of superheated air, the infernus pistol belches death at its target.

BS = 20, +10 (Higher Ground), +10 (Short Range), +20 (Size) modified BS = 60, rolling, 1d100 ⇒ 48, a hit.

Damage, 2d10 + 8 ⇒ (6, 2) + 8 = 16, Penetration = 13, enough to damage the horde, inflicting 1 to its Magnitude.

The Tyranid warrior's head and upper body are melted away almost instantly, the xenos staggering forward until its barbed limbs collapse when the nerve impulses firing from the creature's ganglia finally end, giving it no other recourse.

Vanguard Horde #1 has been reduced to a Magnitude of 20.

As the larger tendril of the Tyranid advance crests the lip of the plateau they advance into the teeth of the fire, never hesitating, never slowing, never realizing the surprise left for them beneath the packed white snow drifts until it is too late.

The cluster mines detonate with tremendous force, even those marines at the safe limit of the angled charges staggering on their feet as a sizable chunk of the massif's edge blows into the sky, claiming dozens of xenos and throwing up a ten meter high curtain of obscuring, crystallized snow and permafrost.

Damage, 4d10 ⇒ (8, 9, 3, 4) = 24, Pen 4, assuming a Blast (5) similar to a frag grenade for those Tyranid effected. End result is 5 more Magnitude damage inflicted to Vanguard Horde #2.

Holding their ground tenaciously, the brethren of Kill-team Umbra wait with bated breath for long seconds until the finally the gaunts and their larger clutchmates of the warrior caste surge through the opaque cloud of scintillating ice particles.

They screech with voracious hunger with their quarry so near, and so the marines of the Deathwatch begin to feed them death.

Vanguard horde #2 has reached the top of the plateau and will be able to initiate melee next round.

Brother Quintus is next. Vanguard Horde #2 has emerged a scant few meters away to his left, Horde #1 is still fighting to finish its ascent up the plateau to his right.
