Perched at the edge of civilized lands, the small town of Falcon’s Hollow has always had to rely on itself to solve its problems. Meanwhile, the uncaring lumber barons squeeze the common folk for every last copper, deaf to their pleas. Now the hacking coughs of the sick are heard throughout town. The plague has come to Falcon’s Hollow and the town’s leaders can’t be bothered to stop it.
Seeking a way to make a name for yourselves, the group decides to make their way to the impoverished, lumber town of Falcon's Hollow. Though you know coin and other rewards will be scarce if any found at all, this tough, poor town sees plenty of travelers and caravans. This could be the perfect place to get word out of the fledgling guild, and a gate way to the big times.
Drakroo |
"Hey, at least no one will try to eat us here..."
...hopefully, the small Kobold thought to himself.
Drakroo hoped his new-found traveling companions appreciated his humor, before remembering exactly how much he really did not want to be eaten.
With a quick shrudder, Drakroo pulled up from his walking to take a glance around the town of Falcon's Hollow for the first time.
"So where are we going anyway, now that we're here?"
Ready to Play!
Kiroto |
"hmph what a sad little town... looks like this place soon might not be here anymore" Kiroto remarks at the state of the town.
"I'm not quite sure where to, we might have to look for some small time jobs."
I'm ready, sorry I oversaw the post about calling it campaign and just kept waiting.
Kiroto |
"Guess we might aswell look. I however doubt there'll be much in here." Kiroto says listening to the sounds for the harking around town.
Drakroo |
"I like you Ilya, so I'll let you in on a little secret. We Kobolds don't taste very good. Or so I've heard," Drakroo replied, flashing a very, very toothy grin.
Turning to face the rest of the group before beginning to scan the town for anything interesting, Drakroo continued, Let's ask around, maybe there's someone here who could point us in the right direction."
I'm looking for either a good local gathering place, or alternatively anyone who could use an immediate hand, and might repay the favor with some information, maybe even someone about to get robbed. Stopping something like that might be a good way to engender good will locally and open some doors.
DM-DR |
As you explore the town, you occasionally catch sight of people coughing and looking feverish. While in search of a good meeting spot, you see a shop with a full line of people streaming out the entrance waiting to enter.
Creeping ivy and full window boxes cover the façade of the rugged-looking, two-story shop bearing the faded sign “Roots and Remedies.” A line of twenty-some somber townsfolk—some with pale, wheezing children, others seeming to be precipitously near tears—stretches from
the open door.
Tincorva |
Stating the obvious, Tincorva will say "Looks like the town is in some distress at the moment."
He will then try chatting up dome townsfolk waiting to get in the shop as best he can to get some idea of what is plaguing the area (literally) as well as how bad it is.
diplomacy (untrained): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Oh well, it was worth a shot.
Jordi of Kenabres |
Jordi, normally cheerful and perma-smiling, looks somehow affected by the village lame situation. Looking for a beggar, he slips a silver to his/her hand, while politely asking if the affection they are suffering has name.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Heal, in case no one know what the plague is: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
DM-DR |
Jordi spends sometime with a man named, Graffkin. He is happy to offer all that he knows to Jordi.
"Sometime back, maybe a week, people started getting sick. Blackscour they called it. Some people get over just fine, but others die after about a week. Lucky for us that Laurel, the herbalist that owns Roots and Remedies, tracked the source of this plague to Brookman’s well. The mayor has since told everyone to not drink from the water. This is kept others from getting sick, but there are still plenty with the disease already. Mostly children and the elderly that need to worry."
Tincorva (and others?) waits in line with the townsfolk. There are many children and elderly that seem quite affected by their disease. Some people stand in line with a dry, not very productive cough (more as if trying to clear their throat or faking it). It takes nearly an hour, but eventually entry into the shop is possible. Once inside, the clutter and disrepair of the shop shows the recent traffic.
The smell of burnt earth and spicy incense chokes the air of the cramped, mud-tracked shop. Bunches of dried herbs hang from the
ceiling, along with dangling pots, presses, alchemical apparatuses, and glassware of more arcane purposes. Pouches of rare plants, jars of colored glass, and all manner of dried, preserved, and jellied animal parts fill high shelves and tables doing double duty as displays and workspaces. In the shop’s rear, a rail-thin woman with severe-looking spectacles and hair pulled back tightly busies herself between an overpacked rack of herbs, a table covered in stray powders and measuring equipment, and a pot loudly bubbling
over with thick gray froth. Over the din of her work and without looking up, the woman impatiently shouts, “And what’s your problem?”
Drakroo |
Drakroo scurries out from behind one of the overflowing racks and moves to where the woman could see him, were she to turn around. He replies, exaggerating a bit... "No problem here ma'am. We're new to town, and looking for work. Maybe we could do something to help with whatever plagues the townspeople? We do this sort of thing all the time. "
Bluff: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Drakroo |
Well, I'm no expert. Certainly not your caliber, but I know a bit. Probably hurting the young and old more than anyone else, yes? Have you found and quarantined the well yet?"
Taking a brief pause, he continues, "Anyway, you look like you could use a hand around here. What can we do?
Need another bluff check? Let me know or feel free to roll it yourself.
DM-DR |
To be honest, she doesn't have stats. Just kinda rolling with it unless things get too outlandish.
"And who do you think I am, the mayor? Ya know, it’s not my job to treat every cut and scabbed knee the daft people of Falcon’s Hollow come crying to me about. But yes, I did track the source to the well. No one is allowed to drink from it. Beyond that, no one else should get."
Drakroo |
"Fair enough, maybe we'll seek the Mayor out then. If you need anything else let us know."
Drakroo smiles at the woman, turns to leave, then adds quickly, "Where do you expect can we find the Mayor, anyway?
DM-DR |
Just as Drakroo asks of the mayor and makes note to leave, the herbalist calls back, "Wait! Maybe there is something you can do. There is a medicine my grandmother used to make. It might help, but I am not sure. It takes a few rare ingredients though, and I do not have the time to go about collecting them for some concoction that might not even work. Perhaps you could go find what I need and bring it back to me?"
Drakroo |
Drakroo turns back to the herbalist, his tail twitching with excitement. "Now that's more like it! What exactly are you looking for? And where does it grow?"
hey guys, I'm at the beach for the rest of the weekend, so I may not be super available. If someone else steps in to finish the conversation with the herbalist, that's great with me. Thanks!
DM-DR |
@Drakroo- Enjoy the beach. Hope you don't waste any time with us and we will see you Monday (or w/e).
"Some rare roots and concentrations, most of which I have here, but there’s three I don’t. Elderwood moss, which I’ve never heard of, but granny says the stuff only grows on the oldest tree in a forest. A specially pickled root called rat’s tail, again, sounds like hoojoo to me. And seven ironbloom mushrooms, stunty little things that only grow in dark places thick with metal, a favorite among dwarves, or so I hear.”
Kiroto |
"Got it, I don't blame you, for not believing it, I've never heard of half of these herbs. I can only promise, that we will try our best to help you. Do you know of any dwarves which might live here? I think they might know a spot for the mushrooms."
Kiroto |
"Thank you, those shrooms might be the easist to get a hold of, the elderwood seems possible to find around the forests, but the last thing I litterely don't know what is. However we'll look into it as soon as possible.
Jordi of Kenabres |
I'm agree to search for medicines, but we must not forgot that the root of all this is in the well, or at least that is what they think.
Says Jordi, in a low tone.
If we decide to help the town, we must discover what is behind it. They stoped using the well, so we don't have to rush into it, but after picking those strange herbs, perhaps we will have to talk with the Major about it.
Kiroto |
"Yes we should look at the well also, but I feel the priority here, is trying to see if we can get the items for the remedy."
Jordi of Kenabres |
Hey hey hey, c'mon Tin, don't say that. You are going to jinx us
Says Jordi, trying to stay serious, but his eyebrowns delate him as just joking.
If something happens, first round of healing will come from your purse!
DM-DR |
Oops. No. That's what I get for reading, but not posting this weekend. My apologies.
“The rat’s tail, who knows? Never seen nor heard of it before. I don't know where you could find it. Well. Actually. Ulizmila, the witch that lives deep in the woods might. She’s a crafty, mean thing that knows all sorts of strangeness. She might even have one. I don’t know what she might want for it, but I doubt it’d come cheap. My grandmother traded her sight to the old crone for a few pages of what she knew, and that was years and years back, and I don’t know a soul who got any nicer as they got older,” the herbalist tells Drakroo.
Drakroo |
Drakroo nods in acceptance to the herbalist, and then to everyone else, taking it all in. "That could work, but how much time do you think it would take to go all the way around the forest? If people are sick, maybe it would be better to take the shorter way and go through? I'm quite handy in a forest, you know. I bet I could even track down this witch if she doesn't find us first."
Kiroto |
"Hey guys you are forgetting we need some moss growing on the elderst trees, which might be somewhere in the forest. At this point I don't think he have the option to go straight through, unless you plan to ask the witch for even more then the rat's tail?"
Drakroo |
"Well, it's probably on the far side, furthest away from the lumber camps, if I had to guess, or maybe somewhere in the middle? I dunno, maybe we'll be able to tell once we're out there? Or maybe someone in town can tell us. Plenty of lumber-folks here after all."
Drakroo |
"Big Tree, old tree. Exactly! Let's go find someone who knows about the forest.
And oh, he says, addressing the herbalist one last time, "what did you say your name was again?"
