As long as the encounters don't feel boring or pointless, I have no problem personally with them only lasting a couple of rounds, because as you say then we can get back to less restrainted RP stuff.

I'll second the combat being fine so far. Plot driven encounters can be longer or more difficult like the tentacle thing and the mcguffin in the first adventure. It is also really a rewarding feeling to think up a plan of attack, as in the hobgoblins, execute it and come out on top even if the plan is as simple as getting the drop on them; something I've rarely ever been able to do in most rpgs Ive played in.

Funny! Igvanus (the blonde wizard) is also a member of the Society. At this rate, we'll have to come up with a secret handshake. :)

Super Secret Character Stuff for Girian:
I'll play along with however you want to do things but here's a quick stab of how things are shaping up. Use the info as you wish:

Igvanus is an academic wizard (you've never heard of him going into the field) and is in very good standing within the society. He is well regarded all around.

Hawkren has a mixed reputation in the Society - with a few friends and several detractors. Part of it is he is an 'odd sort' of sorcerer (given his powers are based off INT not CHA). He's also a bit of a maverick and ignores the 'powers that be' in the Society when their notions conflict with his interests. He's often in the field, has a talent for the work, takes risks, and is known to hunt down and 'aquire' artifacts. And this relates to the most negative part of his rep. It is rumored that he has, once or twice, got wind of another wizard's artifact research and launched his own expedition to 'poach' the object the other wizard was after.

Somehow, despite their differences, Igvanus and Hawkren are tight friends.

I do, yet my job is highly flexible. Can easily end up working through the nights, and/or weekends. Or at times work 30 days consecutive of 16 hour sessions until project is done, but afters have plenty days off to recover.

History:

Hrmmm... perhaps we could say that you two and Girian were in the same.. I guess class of graduates in the Academy?

Girian was pressganged into becoming a wizard with the other option being death. He'd never really been happy with his lot in life before but that didn't help him from gaining the notoriety of his circumstances in the Blue Dragon academy.
As the only son of the folk legend Trill Lewyn, the feared bandit of Bhelskars river way, Girian was hard pressed to make anything but enemies in the Academy.

Everyone assumed him to be a hooligan with no respect for the law but even starting the academy late and being the target of such suspicions Girian thrived.

Girian graduated the academy and was scouted into the army, he worked as a peacekeeper for some time but was then taken in by one of the specialist army groups for his skill in scouting. (Well thats what it says, mostly its because the commander took a liking to the former bandit turned mage.)

So my thoughts would be you and Igvanus we some of the few people in the academy to realize that much as Girian was a dangerous person he genuinely desired to change his stars with the chance he was given.
Assuming that was the case perhaps we could say you and Igvanus managed to ferret out that one of the instructors was setting up Girian to fail despite him being in the top ten percent of his group.
You stopped it obviously.

Then we could perhaps say that there was a falling out when Girian chose to take up a life of law while Hawkren became more wild. Igvanus was caught in the middle trying to keep his two good friends from tearing each other apart.
We could either say that the pair made up their differences or left it off there and went their separate ways.
