Hmm, that sounds interesting, although I'm not sure I want to invest myself so thoroughly yet, as I've not played enough to consider myself experienced enough to dictate, for example, what is or is not balanced, or what is or is not particularly flavorful or interesting.
Magnes Coalbrow |
Sorry about that, traitorous brain decided that responding to you all was less important than sleep. Fell asleep in front of my laptop actually, got a crick in my neck now.
Bhalur Blackthorn |
ahah, you should have seen my face. Appearing after 7h again and then seeing all that post count. God, its happening again
Bhalur Blackthorn |
Hm, I have only 10 on my Sense Motive. I guess you mean, that I rolled 19 + 10 from sense motive = 29
Rhialla Arken |
You rolled really well Bhalur, hope that luck carries into combat.
Bhalur Blackthorn |
Oh, I have always horrible luck in combat. One thing I am happy with, is that Acolyte has full bab. does help just a tiny bit here at the beginning levels before we get further.
Actually, what I am starting to think about, is that we have now full charisma orientated person :P Only positive thing I have for me is my massive Con stats so I might as well soak some damage in battles
Darvinen Jaalae |
Right, you just rolled the 19.
Anyhow, uh, does anybody else have a higher sense motive? Because that's quite useful. I can handle diplomacy, right now my mod is+14, and I can also bluff fairly well, but Darvinen isn't ever going to put ranks into sense motive or intimidate, which could be helpful. And if there is splitting up then two diplomacy people is helpful, and two rolls is much better than one. Soaking damage is also a fairly important thing, as otherwise people die and then that's no good.
Kevroth |
Kevroth is not what you would call a socially adept person. ;) He usually blunders his way though until it is time to shoot things. :)
Magnes Coalbrow |
If the dice gods don't jam his gun he is terrifying.
Gunslingers are mailmen, they don't deal massive damage in comparisons to other martial builds but the damage they do deal is going to reliably arrive. Neither rain nor sleet nor snow.
Magnes is sub-par at diplomacy having a trait that lets him use his intelligence for it. Unfortunately he has no ranks in sense motive and it isn't a class skill. Something I will need to remedy in future.
We have both Rhialla (who is simply good at everything because Toxic dragon is a walking four leaf clover factory on stat rolls.) and then we have Bhallur who is our surprisingly good social tank.
EDIT:
Yet more herring for poor beleaguered Magnes? You and that fish have a deep seated love affair.
though that could be really amusing as a reunion.
*Sputter*
*Gasp*
TRAITOR!
Yes uncle I know
Wha? Magnes? is that you, how are you so old its only be-
Sixty years.
Wha?
You've been a Shiney lawn ornament for sixty years.
Magnes Coalbrow |
Man, there are so many options. Scribing costs are quite low so I'd like to ask for a bit more than 1-2 1st level extracts. I'd be quite fine with just saying that 1-2 is what I learn that day but I can come back any other time the alchemist has free time and learn more spells.
for now lets say
1st: 1d4 ⇒ 2
2nd: 1d2 ⇒ 1
So lets say:
Comprehend languages
Touch of the Sea
And...
Alchemical Allocation?
Hrmm... What would be really cool is a Pre-constructed spellbook in the style of These ones
One of Zabrini's old work books from when he was traveling or something like that could be really cool.
Would it be a problem for me to say that Zabrini is the one I bought my fancy new alchemical magic items from. Another option would be he shows me where in the city I can find such items.
The formula Alembic, hybridization funnel and vial of Efficacious Medicine all come from the Alchemy handbook and are not likely to be stuff easily available unless one knows where to ask.
Alchemists in this setting are rather secretive after all.
Magnes Coalbrow |
Alchemy, land of the lost 10 dollar words.
Short hand of the items is as follows.
Formula Alembic= Lets you boil a potion and lean the spell in it like a scroll. Added bonus, you don't destroy the potion.
Hybrid funnel= Take 2 liquid or semi-solid alchemical tools (Ex Alchemist fire and Ghast retch) and use the funnel (with a high Craft Alchemy check) to make it into one item.
Vial of effer-blahdiblah = increases alchemical bonuses provided by stuff like Anti-toxin by 2.
The first Pre-con alchemist book is this the Lab Journal of Constance Inflix (Level 5 Alchemist).
Would it be alright to just swap a few of the spells on that one? I was thinking i'd just swap a few of the spell already in the book for the ones I had asked for.
Well that and file off the serial numbers and say it was Zabrini's travel journal or what not.
Kevroth |
Kevroth Did you catch this Meeting the Moon post?
Sure did. I am about to head home, so I will post when I get there.
EDIT: and by 'sure did' I mean 'sure did miss it'
Magnes Coalbrow |
Spell learned from the spellbooks/potions we collected:
Shield, endure elements, reduce person
Alter self, bulls strength.
130gp in writing costs.
Zabrini's Lab book
The steel cover of this slim journal has taken its fair share of abuse; acid scars and minor slag spots show where the journal was subjected to intense working conditions. Equations, balances, and chemical notations mark the margins of the pages—with some formulae, it is difficult to tell where the notes end and the formula begins.
blur, Alchemical allocation[APG], fire breath [APG], Resist energy, vomit swarm [APG]
1st—bomber’s eye [APG], comprehend languages, jump, keen senses [APG], negate aroma [APG], touch of the sea [APG] Expeditious retreat. Stone fist[APG]
Preparation Ritual
Alchemical Protection (Su) The alchemical knowledge granted by this book protects you from poisons and alchemical items. Spend this boon’s effect as an immediate action when you make a saving throw against poison or an alchemical item but before rolling the saving throw. You gain a +4 bonus on that saving throw.
*Edits: resist energy was in a L1 slot. much as I'd love to have that spell as a L1 extrat it is unfortunately a L2 spell for alchemists. I traded it for transmute potion to poison. I replaced the missing L1 spell with Stone fist
Traded Delay poison for Alchemical allocation.

He guys, I've learned that I'll be away for at least four days in the near future, probably more like six. I think it's from the 4-10th or the 6-10th, or something like that, depending on if there will be wifi at the hotel I'll be at the 4-6th, which I'd say is in the 40-60% likelyhood range.
Magnes Coalbrow |
Magnes has the trait 'Glory of the old' which increases the normal +2 bonus dwarves get with an additional +1.
Would I be correct to assume that you are playing your character when he ignores the possible negative ramifications of casting a charm spell in a public setting?
Cuz while that isn't actual mind control it treads a line most uneducated folks are not going realize if they happen to cotton on to what Darvinen is doing.
Darvinen Jaalae |
Yeah, Darvinen, especially when drunk, doesn't really understand how "negative ramifications" work. And with his social skills and mister commoner acting mostly normally, except being friendly towards Darvinen, there shouldn't be anything he can't smooth over, at least, until the spell wears off.
Darvinen Jaalae |
Condolences Nighflier, hope you all are all right.
Thanks, that's uh, not what I've been doing, which is rolling a d20 and then writing out everything.
Regarding botting, I think Darvinen wants to avoid fighting when possible using skills and spells and even occasionally a little gold. If you level up while I'm away, I want to learn mount as a first level spell and get another wand of vanish, putting skill ranks in bluff, diplomacy, spellcraft, and know(arcana).
Rhialla Arken |
Guys, my wife just lost her grandfather. It was expected. He was 88 years old. Anyway, I'll be unavailable for posting today and tomorrow.
Deepest condolences to you and your family Nightflier.
Magnes Coalbrow |
So not knowing the particular laws of this city I don't know precisely how Magnes is going to act.
Casting a spell on a resident of a city is bad, the caster is obviously drunk though and did nothing more but ask for a thalen as a demonstration. Not a locked in irons for twenty long years kind of crime but certainly the sort of thing that has Magnes hopping mad to be involved in. Magnes specifically likes this place out of most of the bars in the city, getting kicked out of it will not be something that sits well with him.
What I was going to do is have Magnes offer up his remaining gold (about 100) serving a dual purpose. Both giving Magnes the kick in the pants he needs to leave the city (to both let this rumor blow over and get him more gold) in additon to providing a hook for Darvinen to open up to the rest of the group as we travel/ giving his brain something to gnaw on him with in the from of a small guilt.
Also meaning that Darvinen is stuck with us for the long haul, something that might be an issue for him templated as he is off of Jack sparrow.
That whole "Not having a choice" thing is going to chafe.
Rhialla Arken |
Waiting on a reply post from Darvinen before addressing the issue Kevroth mentioned.
Magnes Coalbrow |
I'm waiting to see if crooked nose decided to take Magnes's money or sell us up the river for reasons.
Magnes is going to be exceptionally unhappy if he has to deal with this nonsense when he gets back into town.
Chingo Chaplo |
I don't know how much gold you have Kai. You are supposed to keep track of that yourself. I can't remember how much a level 2 character starts with. There's a table for starting gold according to level, but I'm in the middle of something right now, so you'll have to find it yourself.
I'll update within a couple of hours.
Darvinen Jaalae |
Alright, I think I responded to most of the important things, I'll be able to post for the rest of today and once in the morning, but probably not after that until friday. It's a vacation, yes, backpacking in the mountains on the border of Nevada and Utah, which is western US. It's remote, the town I'm in is basically just two stores and four or five bars.
The WBL chart states 1000 GP for a second level character, but I think that's in addition to the gold you get from your starting class.

Afraid it isn't. 2nd level characters have a recommended 1000gp starting amount regardless of class.
