Bhoors Thistledown |
Bhoors stowed his axe draws his bow and starts down the hall. "Lets keep moving." He moves down the hall toward what the rats were eating.

.......... Dwarven Ruins Basement - Headless Body Intersection ..........
A headless corpse in patchwork leather armor lies strewn in the middle of this section
of corridor. You can see a set of closed double doors down the hallway at the edge of the light from Serila’s spell.
Ruthviren peers into the darkness around the corner but see nothing.
Bhoors Thistledown |
Bhoors looks over and searches the corpse.
Naturally if there is anything to salvage. Do I think its human, is it child sized?
DM Giants |
Looking over the body you can tell it was a male adult of either Human, Half-Elf or Elven. Hard to tell which without a head.
Searching the body you find th skeleton’s belongings were long ago picked clean by the kobolds, but its boots did not fit any of them. In addition, a blood-soaked journal lies here, a few gory pages still legible.
Bhoors Thistledown |
Bhoors pulls out the journal and looks at it, "A journal before this fellow became rat food. Not much else looks picked clean."
Serila Gudlinck |
"May I see the journal while you look at him?"
Serila puts her crossbow away and takes the journal. She flips through it, looking for anything of interest to the party.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
"Hmm... I should probably sit down and take some more time to read through it..."
Bhoors Thistledown |
Bhoors passes the journal. "Its not a child. Human or half elf."

Farid Heydar |
As the group studies the corpse, Farid moves to the nearby door and studies it for traps.
I have to get this right sometime... the Barbarian thinks to himself as he works.

Farid Heydar |
Farid turns to his allies, "I believe this one is not trapped, shall we proceed through it? I hate to leave a door unexplored at my back". he states while motioning to the dark hall to the north.
Bhoors Thistledown |
Bhoors nods to Fared in agreement readying his bow.
Serila Gudlinck |
Serila nods in response to Auxavier's question. "This man was with at least two others. One was most likely a cleric. The other was dragged off while screaming, by some hellish servant of Droskar."
"This man himself was apparently kissed by something creepy and died. Before he died he longed for blood, had 'lost his tongue'...not sure if that's literal... and apparently he wanted to fly..."
Serila quickly takes some distance from the corpse. "Could someone smash his head, just to make sure he stays down? I know it sounds cruel, but I expect him to stand up as an undead any moment now..."
Bhoors Thistledown |
I could toss him in molten slag."
DM Giants |
You remember something about a creature called a Vargouille. This creature is a blackened, bat-winged fiend's head. Tentacles dangle from chin and scalp. It's fanged mouth is full of razor sharp teeth. It's kiss can change the victim into a Vargouille.
Auxavier Atredies |
"Cirthana taught me of this in a book with a horrible picture this sounds like a Vargouille, a blackened, bat-winged flying fiend's head. Tentacles dangle from chin and scalp. It's fanged mouth is full of razor sharp teeth. It's kiss can change the victim into one of its own."
"Bhoors do you recall it, I had to have shown it to you before."
"If such evil is here it will go after good first meaning Serilla one of us must stay next to her at all times."
Bhoors Thistledown |
Bhoors tries to look knowledgeable , "Undead right . . . ah don't let it kill you. Were they resistant to anything or vulnerable."
DM Giants |
Ok are you guys ready to move forward or do you want to roleplay more? Also what do you do with the headless body?
Ruthviren Etiole |
"If we get eh chance, we can drag this ," he nudges the headless body with the butt of his pole arm, "To a proper pyre, but I say we move on to look for the kids. Through the doors?'
Serila Gudlinck |
"If this corpse isn't dangerous, we should move on. Saving the kids has priority over this man's funeral. Also, it would be improper to bury or cremate him without his head, even if retrieving it means facing a vargouille..."
Serila moves forward, but not too far forward. She meanwhile tries to recall any weaknesses vargouilles may have, in addition to the standard weaknesses of undead.
Knowledge (Religion): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
DM Giants |
You remember that a Vargouille's bite is poisonous and that is from another plane of existence which means they can be banished. All spells that protect a person from summon creatures or outsides work well against a Vargouille.
DM Giants |
The door is not locked.
Serila Gudlinck |
"I remember vargouilles are originally from another plane of existence. Spells that protect you from summoned creatures therefor also work against vargouilles. Also, they're poisonous. Though the part where your head drops off after it's kissed you kind of made that obvious already, didn't it?"
Serila Gudlinck |
"Of course," Serila responds, "my parents paid for good teachers. There's no way I'd not put effort into my studies."
Auxavier Atredies |
"I put more efforts into the hilt of an axe and strength of a shield than those dusty tomes, but I hope what I have will always be sufficient for the task at hand."
"Farid is beyond us all studying both outright warfare and clever subterfuge, extremes of difference, so it would seem."
"Bhoors, Rhoo I don't recall us ever discussing schooling while we were like the children we are searching for, too busy getting into trouble and being somewhere else!"
Aux smiles talking about childhood and hopes to rescue the kids even now...
Bhoors Thistledown |
Bhoors smiles, "We do well enough not all woodsman read at all."
DM Giants |
You guys ready to move on?
DM Giants |
OK door is not locked. Who will be opening the door.
Auxavier Atredies |
"If that fire pit still burns when we leave we need to bring Barius here, if anyone will know what to make of this place it will be him."
"Farid are you opening the door, I am ready!"
Bhoors Thistledown |
Bhoors readies his bow and watched the hallway behind his friends.
Farid Heydar |
ok back!
Farid opens the door slowly holding his axe in front of hi as best he can, this time he kneels down while opening the door so no tentacled monstrosity attempts to eat his brain, again.

.......... Dwarven Ruins Basement - Stone Obelisk Room - Area 7 ..........
Farid pushes open the door and Serila sends her floating lights in to illuminate the room.
This large circular stone chamber has four massive iron doors in the north, south, east, and west walls. The east doors stand open, while the north and west doors are closed. At the center of the room a strange stone obelisk rises from floor to ceiling, its surface covered with metal bands and encrusted with deposits of a strange greenish mineral. The floor of this chamber is strewn with headless skeletons and scattered bones (no skulls among them). A dented steel shield and bits of metal armor lie at the foot of the obelisk.
Bhoors Thistledown |
Bhoors looks past the others at the grim sight before returning to watch the rear. "I am no expert but that room looks trapped and bears a curse of undeath if our luck holds."
Auxavier Atredies |
"Skeletons without heads makes me think of a nest of the foul Vargouille, not just the one. This would be worse than that nest of stirge we once stirred up."
"Serila can you send your lights into the heights of this chamber before we enter?"
Aux peeks in the door with Farid, hoping not to see the nasty creatures hidden to normal sight....
Serila Gudlinck |
Serila does as asked and illuminates the ceiling.
"And?" she asks from the back of the party. "Do you see anything up there?"
DM Giants |
.......... Dwarven Ruins Basement - Stone Obelisk Room - Area 7 ..........
The small bright blue lights float around the room near the ceiling giving the room an eerie look as the light shines off the green minerals embedded in the stone obelisk and shadows dance around the room. Nothing moves or is seen in the room.
Ruthviren Etiole |
"Farid, you've had enough things munching on you lately. Time to share..." Roo chuckles as he moves past him into the room, hammer at the ready.

.......... Dwarven Ruins Basement - Stone Obelisk Room - Area 7 ..........
The two young warriors step into the room looking about but see nothing new.
Auxavier Atredies |
Aux looks around the room and decides that certainly each door leads somewhere new.
"Farid can you check that these doors are locked? We might want to secure this room if we can and check the main hallway, I do not want to face enemies on both sides."
DM I forgot to ask in which directions the doors swing...I might be tempted to piton one or two shut....
