It is the 41st Millenium...

For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the
Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of Mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.

Yet in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battle fleets cross the Daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the shining psychic manifestation of the Emperor’s will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bioengineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard, the ever vigilant Inquisition, and the Tech-Priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name but a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants—and worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of the thirsting gods.

Prepare to enter the nightmare world of DARK HERESY.

In dark isolation is where they keep me."this is for the best"Is what I tell myself. My imprisonment is not due to any felonies commited against the imperium and its constituents. It is to guard the mortal realm of men of the malignant energies never ending choas spawns that dwell beyond the veil.

Kai'brin exhale an unearthly frozen breath that catches on the closet wall creating frozen snowflake patterns as it freezes over

its odd how cold it is since the room is well heated and ventilated but as the ether washes over me this ghostly artic weather blankets the cell holding me. I attune myself of the unreality to master its energies, I know it is hurbistic in thinking i cant best the energies of a million nightmares but I am going to hone my skills better. I find my self visioning my home world, infested with demons both physical and ethereal its amazing I was able to survive so much death and carnage at the hands of such monstrosities and then the black ships arrive. This is the closet we ever come to dreaming for the demons forever raking at the corners of our minds trying to land themselves into realspace will capitalize on any vulnerable moments our minds are unguarded or weakened. So we meditate instead, allowing the portions of our brains to steal healing powers of rest and restore its properties to the rest of my body to function properly when next my skills are needed. When Kai'brin Sool takes to the field...

Someone got a little edgy and wanted to post before we started! Guess I'll get the party started now.

It has been over a month since you arrived at Desoleum, and in its main hive by the same name. Inquisitor Ratwater is conducting business here, and while she is doing that, you are all staying with a vile merchant prince called Gustus, who lives just below the nobles' spire.

Since arrival, you haven't been allowed to go outside much. The inquisitor has allowed you to run a few errands, you expect mostly to get you more familiar with the hive. It is like most hives, except that everyone here seems to carry around a sign containing an intricate pattern of moving cogs. It is their identification, but also shows everyone they have debts to. They are taken very seriously, even by criminals, and that you have none, immediately gives you away as outsiders.

What the Inquisitor is doing here, you do not know, but it is surely something, as she is often absent. You do your best to pass the time. Eventually, her second-in-command, interrogator Lachbrook, passes you a message. You are to come to the Grand Shrine of the Oath, the Hive's largest cathedral, and meet here in a private gallery in two hours.

I want a post from each introducing your character. What you were doing when you got the message, and what you do in preparation for leaving.

Interrogator Lachbrook firmly beats on a thick metal door. Silence ensues, except for the quiet reverberations from the beating. Lachbrook repeats. Nothing.

"Agent Delta Omega?" Lachbrook loudly calls at the door.

"Affirmative," a very muted voice replies from the other side.

"Agent, I have a message for you."

"Then enter and cease pounding on things."

Lachbrook opens the door to reveal a small, cell-like room with a man staring into a mirror. The man has two mechanical arms protruding from his back through his coat and a series of small mechanical tools instead of a left lower forearm and hand. The small tools are carefully holding and manipulating a datapad, recording unknown things. One of the mechanical arms is poking different portions of the man's body while the other seems to be watching as it has a camera of sorts attached to the end. The man does not react to the mechanical devices as the go about their business.

"The inquisitor requires your presence at the Grand Shrine of the Oath, in a private gallery in two hours," Lachbrook says officially.

"Affermative, interroagator," the man replies his full voice now completely audible, sounding unnaturally hollow.

Lachbrook militarily turns heel and leaves, the boots audibly fading.

Meanwhile, Delta Omega One's mechanical devices begin folding up next to his body as he puts away the datapad into a pack hanging off his chest. After a few moments the extra bodily extensions have snugged themselves in various ways so as to conserve space and Delta walks out as well.

Lothar sat happily in the estate of Merchant Prince Gustus he was preparing a variety of counter offers for one of Gustus' underlings named Carlos. Gustus was a merchant of means and he would not ignore the opportunity to make connections and acquire materials that may be of use in his new vocation.

The list of items he was negotiating for in exchange for a variety of las weaponry was broad to put it mildly. He wasn't sure how exactly things would work out. Weapons of course would be needed but if the blade was all that was needed he wouldn't have been chosen. His skills were a little more esoteric in nature. Carlos was a skilled competitor to hone his own abilities, negotiation was always enjoyable though it had it's own stress attached.

He was wearing grey robes with white threaded embroidery on the cuffs depicting scrolls, at his hip was his laspistol. Hidden beneath the robes was a hardened body glove, it paid to invest in ones safety. In the room nearby was his lasgun, he had spent a long time working on it before bringing it for inspection and sanctifying to one of the Tech Priest in a compact with his house. Like many of his family he was a certified tech adept, it was useful in negotiations. But all items were reviewed by a tech priest before leaving the factory floor or workshop. It was dangerous to not afford the machine spirit such an honour, he had seen photo's as part of his training of such things. Of a foolish heretek who had tried to construct a lasgun, and his reward was given by the machine spirits wrath erupting in an explosion that left a crafter of burnt meat in the man's chest that proved fatal which given what the Priesthood of Mars would do to him was a mercy.

Learning back in the chair he opened a sachet of flavouring and poured it into the water which began to bubble and sat back to review his latest counter offers. He could afford many things given his lineage and personal holdings but that didn't mean he was willing to pay a fools price for them. Certainly he'd have to leave out a few more of the pricier items and wait to get a more reasonable deal on them later.

He looked up as a servant came in and announced Lachbrook, Lothar was to his feet and bowed to his superior. The time had finally arrived.

Question:
I have a list of items Lothar is looking to get for himself/the group. I amn't going to use commerce seeing as it'll take up too much time and effort. I have the modifiers worked out and if the God Emperor wills I will roll for them. Not rolling for anything that would damage subtlety (slightly easier with his bonus). I'd put it in a spoiler so as not to clutter things. I'm happy to hold off on such things but you said the words Merchant Prince so it got my mind going.

Lothar:
You can make a few rolls for some easier to get items for the group during the time you were waiting for the Inquisitor to reach out to your Warband. You have no idea what the mission will be yet but always good to be prepared than not.

Lothar nodded to himself, not everything they would need but a useful bundle of items whether they were tasked to monitor a target, infiltrate an area or deal with a troublesome individual. He closed the case and headed off for the meeting, hopefully some of the items would be useful for them.

female Human

Sister Alex was polishing her flame pistol with thoughts of burning heretics when the interrogator greeted her. She nodded silently in acknowledgement.

Sister Alex is wearing her custom made guard black armor with tiny intricate skulls adorned to her shoulder pads, large chain axe strapped to her back and flame pistol in holster at her hip.

She stood at the door waiting impatiently

1 person marked this as a favorite.

What kind of rarity of things would be okay to try to requisition?

The more rare an item the more attention you draw to yourself and harder it is to find obviously. Lothar built his guy around trying to make things a bit easier in that aspect of the game.

Then in that case, I'll just try for cranial armor which, because of Mechanicus background, is made common

Delta:
Since you have been waiting a little over a month I'll let the cybernetic fly. Normally those things take a bit more time than just an acquisition role to get installed/adjusted :)

Spoiler:
Oh, no worries then. It isn't that big a deal. Just a part of my to-remove list.

A few hours later, you arrive at the shrine. It is at full capacity, though you do not remember this to be a significant feast day. Soon, however, the reason becomes clear, as several pyres are constructed in the front. It doesn't take long before the heretics are brought out.

As soon as the procedure is well underway, the inquisitor joins you. Her intention of bringing you here is obvious, this is her work.

"Hive Desoleum holds many heresies and horrors, and you are gathered here for the destruction of one of them. Still, there are many remaining. There are increasing reports of horrible deaths within the hive's upper levels, with odd items of a possible xenos or archaeotech nature found with each corpse. Fellow nobles have related these were preceded with bouts of erratic and troublesome behaviour, and worry that a hive noble named Lans Guljian has exhibited many of the same behaviours.

You are tasked with the Emperor's Work: to investigate the deaths and possible connections to any illicit artefacts, determine if they are potential dangers of a wider nature, and terminate their distribution. Recover and contain any items uncovered, lest they corrupt others.

Carry the Emperor's Light with you throughout the hive, for there is little proper illumination to be found in this festering, ancient edifice. Desoleum teeters on the blade's edge of damnation, and one further heresy could topple the entire hive into the abyss.

I leave the planet tonight. Report to your host your progress."

Delta Omega One stand motionless during the briefing, save his scribe-tines arm which whirls to life and seems to record the whole monologue. After the inquisitor is finished the small manipulator arms fold back up and Delta Omega One just says, "Affirmative."

Milo is human and stands at an even 6'. His build is athletic though he does not look like he would throw much weight around a training room. He wears a cape which covers his midsection though bulges from pistols are noticeable at his side. Slung over his shoulder is a well maintained sniper rifle, its not something that he lets out of his sight for the most part.

Milo was resting, he was bored, very bored and it took him a few minutes to rouse from his slumber which is why he comes to the meeting just in time to hear the Inquisitor speak.

Milo keeps his thoughts to himself, he's not much for talking. Still, he did not like it one bit, the Inquisitor being off planet like she was about to be.

"Inquisitor, have we leave to sanction any potential heretics we may uncover or would you prefer for us to capture them for further interrogation?"

WS 41, BS 42, Str30, T30, Agi34, Int32, Per28, WP30, Fel37 Wounds: 8/13, TB: 3, Armour All: 4, FP: 1/2. Deathlight 15/18

Either the Merchant Prince was a true vassal of the Inquisitor like themselves, a useful cover, or had access to an Astropath and the Inquisitor wanted to avoid other means she may not have a hold over.

Lothar nodded but left the Inquisitor to answer Milo's question not seeking to draw her ire by bombarding her with questions. He chose to take her statement as it was, they were being given leeway, he expected they'd be interrogating and killing quite a few individuals.

He was curious about the other agents, he had left them well enough alone but now they were to work together on this task, and perhaps more in future, he'd do well to get a stock of their abilities.

Kai arrives at the meeting place ahead of schedule and wait for the inquisitor to deliver his orders. As time passes he notices more acolytes arriving no doubt to hear the message. Kai'brin is wearing a sheer cloth over his head so as not to unnerve those who look upon his pale feautres for his blood vessels are visible through his pale skin and eyes seem to swirl with the color of madness for being exposed to the warp energies for so long. People tend to be auite disturbed in gis presence if not by the sight then the eeire aura emmited from close proximity.

Keeping his distance from the group kai'brin absorbs the deatils of his mission bowing making the sign of the Aquila with his hands.

"We shall not fail you. May the Emperor protect you in your travels."

Kai'brin glaces over at the group heading over to make introductions

"A thousand blessing upon you all. I AM Kai'brin Sool. "

"Keep distance creature. The inquisition suffers you to live but only for your usefulness. Your kind plagues and is the cause of the Imperium's problems." Delta Omega One says as his mechadendrites unfold.

Kai'brin stands their masked up with an smile shrugging off the robots words. For he is use to such treatment. Those who are gifted with the sense are often shunned for their evolved state.

"I guess it cannot be helped, fellowship was never my strong point. Very well tin man I will dispense with the pleasantries and focus solely on the mission." kai'brins voice sounds like a raspy whiper of ghosts

Kai looks around at the rest of the lot. To get a read on their features. To see if they share the same sentiment.
"who shall we appoint leader of this mission."

Inquisitor Ratwater gives Milo the look that makes grown men soil their pants. "I have selected this group because I trust your judgement. Do not fail me or the Emperor." With that she leaves.

Milo grins, "Wonderful. Then we shall be bored no longer".

"I am Milo Mila. I am a man of many talents, leader is not one of them, who among you has experience in conducting operations?"

WS 41, BS 42, Str30, T30, Agi34, Int32, Per28, WP30, Fel37 Wounds: 8/13, TB: 3, Armour All: 4, FP: 1/2. Deathlight 15/18

"That would depend on your definition of operations. I am Lothar of House Von Bismarck. I have led several operations but they were not of a combat nature. Whoever is leader, and indeed I would put myself forward, must acknowledge that our Inquisitor has selected us with varied skill sets in mind. It would be wise for that person to listen to all who are involved."

He moves towards one of the crates he brought in with him. "Until now I didn't know who I was working with or the nature of the operation but I still tried to acquire a few items that might be useful." Opening the crate ye can see a longlas and a multikey. "These are the most pertinent, I can put the longlas to use though someone else might have more skill with it. This multikey is outside my skill set." His eyes move to Delta Omega One "Perhaps our representative from the Priesthood of Mars could find it of use?"

"Affermative. And I care little for leadership in comparison to results. Efficiency is of utmost importance."

WS 41, BS 42, Str30, T30, Agi34, Int32, Per28, WP30, Fel37 Wounds: 8/13, TB: 3, Armour All: 4, FP: 1/2. Deathlight 15/18

Lothar picks up the multikey "I am the only one putting my name forward so far it seems but not all have spoken." He looks towards Sister Alex.

Lothar hands the multikey over the Delta Omega One "I am a certified Tech Adept so may be able to assist you with suitable tasks, but I am well aware certain tasks are left to a member of the Priesthood of Mars alone. Inquiry, what is your rank and designation?"

@Kai'brin Sool, is your character an Astropath or a more conventional psyker? Both have advantages but Astropaths are tolerated a bit better. It'll help me inform my character reactions.

"Fortune favors the prepared"
Kai'brin moves to inspect the assortment of weapons and gadgetry to see if there is anything he may make use of. Moving past the machine with a sly smirk.

"May I" kai ask Bismarck
I am more the hated kind, the conventional psyker

WS 41, BS 42, Str30, T30, Agi34, Int32, Per28, WP30, Fel37 Wounds: 8/13, TB: 3, Armour All: 4, FP: 1/2. Deathlight 15/18

Lothar didn't want to make himself look bad so was being nicer to the psyker than he would normally, the Inquisitor did send them. "Of course. A local pattern, not one made in my own families factorums but it appears perfectly serviceable." He gestures towards the longlas before lifting it and the foam layer up to reveal a few smaller items.

Manacles, chrono, filtration plugs and a magnocular are apparent on the level below. "I hope to get multiples of these and will in time as well as other equipment but we move where our Inquisitor directs and when."

female Human

Sister Alex would nod in acknowledgement and look at the rest of the group.

"Why don't we focus more on doing what the inquisitor said and worry about a leader later on in the journey"

kai'brin glances over the haul of equipment seeing there is nothing that he wishes to make use of makes a hamd gesture indicating he will respectfully decline using any of these gathered tools.
"That is quite a nice selection of gear but I would have to pass for now."

Kai gives the entire group his attention once more

"Does anyone know who this Lans Guljian character is? How can we find him? His business routines? How can we assess information on him without alerting attention to ourselves?"

"Nothing to stop us talking about it while we make our preparations and get under way. Let me see, Lans Guljian..."

Lothar has Infused knowledge any common or scholastic lores he can roll?

You can make a common lore roll.

Lothar rubs his chin and thinks when asked about Lans Guljian but it does not ring a bell...

Common Lore 60: 1d100 ⇒ 39 +1 degree of success if successful

"I don't think I've heard the name crop up but I amn't from this world. If this man is a collector of forbidden artifacts announcing our presence and intent will likely lead him to hide such things and hire on security. I would think discretion and diversion, locally it shouldn't be too hard to discover what kind of holdings he has and use that to our advantage."

Delta unless you how CL knowledge of this hive you wouldn't know who he is.

So what's next step? Hit the streets, poke for some information on where this Lans can be found?

WS 41, BS 42, Str30, T30, Agi34, Int32, Per28, WP30, Fel37 Wounds: 8/13, TB: 3, Armour All: 4, FP: 1/2. Deathlight 15/18

He's got infused knowledge as well. But hitting the streets seems sensible unless he turns up something useful.

Woops! I thought only you had that.

Delta you dig deep into your core and recall the name Lans Guljian. He resides at the Hesentanz Manor. The family was once a very wealthy family but based on your records has lost much of it's wealth and the manse is situated at the lowest level of the Apex. Based on this he is little better than the merchant princes and wealth gentry of the Upper Hive.

WS 41, BS 42, Str30, T30, Agi34, Int32, Per28, WP30, Fel37 Wounds: 8/13, TB: 3, Armour All: 4, FP: 1/2. Deathlight 15/18

Does Delta know what kind of businesses/estate he has? It could be used refrigerators but if my character comes into the territory looking for [insert item x] could be a good cover to find out about him without drawing too much attention... maybe even get us invited to evening tea. Or we sneak into his house and have a good rifle, either way works.

The metal oriented man stands statue-like for several moments before reciting in a monotone voice, "Lans Guljian. Belongs to a family who was once wealthy. Now is only moderately so. Hesentanz Manor. Location, lowest level of Apex. Social status analysis, merchant prince."

"Do you recall what cause the downgrade in social status? Might it have been a deal gone sour that we can use to find someone looking for payback? Any merchant competitors that would like to see Lans fall further from the uper echelons?"

Spoiler:

Is there a band of astropaths stationed in the city where I can inquire about any warp disturbances

The family is very near to not being up in the upper spire due to their decline. Their holdings are dwindling very fast but no one seems to really know why.

Kai'brin:
There probably is but you would not have any direct access to them as they are probably controlled by the noble houses.

"Ah magnoculars, now those I could use".

Milo smiles.

"I say we watch him this Lans Guljian. At least for a few days. See who he interacts with. Once we have a sense of who the players are we can pay him a personal visit and extract the data we need to recover the artifacts and place the heretics causing these disruptions into the long sleep from which they'll never wake. If he is the bit player Delta believes him to be no doubt he is an agent of chaos and not the master of it".

WS 41, BS 42, Str30, T30, Agi34, Int32, Per28, WP30, Fel37 Wounds: 8/13, TB: 3, Armour All: 4, FP: 1/2. Deathlight 15/18

"Then by all means as long as you put them to good use take them." Lothar nods to the magnoculars.

"Once we have a grasp of his comings and goings making discrete entry into his home may grant us additional evidence and if he does not suspect anything we could secure it before he has a chance to try to destroy any of it. Correspondences, ledgers could provide a great deal of information. Ideally if we could do this undetected we could prepare a trap in his own house." He raises a hand "I am sure some would prefer a more public display but if we are discrete and unseen we can be on the trail of any of his heretic allies with them none the wiser and can still do public displays of punishment later if that is agreed as suitable. But we shall see how events transpire."

Your warband finally deciding on a course of action heads out to try and "watch" Lans Guljian and make some kind of determination as to what he is up to. Finding the Manor is not hard just asking a few locals (no rolls required).

It is clear at a glance that Guljian’s manse has seen better days, crumbling stonework and tarnished plasteel show a shocking degree of neglect. Two lumin-globes, one flickering intermittently, illuminate the large arched doorway, which houses a set of heavy wooden doors inlaid with elaborate carvings of mythical wasteland beasts from Desoleum’s most ancient legends. A short flight of broad steps leads to the doors, set with a knocker cast in the form of a coiled serpent.

Do you all want to just act inconspicuous, hide in the shadows or do something else? There are some shops in the area that can give you a view of the manse and lot of citizens just moving through the streets minding their own business.

Run down manse or not the neighborhood has to be reasonably high class. Any chance Lothar can sit himself at a table infront of some kind of cafe with something like a business newspaper or failing that just a book. Hide in plain sight?

Lothar, yes that is easy task in the area. You find a good spot and read through local news articles. You see the normal Imperium propaganda about how the God Emperor protects us all and some general political affairs but nothing out of the ordinary. Obviously papers would not post anything that would cause the citizens unrest lest they loose control of the population.

"This tactic is logical, but it does not utilize any of my skill set. What would you have me do?"

WS 41, BS 42, Str30, T30, Agi34, Int32, Per28, WP30, Fel37 Wounds: 8/13, TB: 3, Armour All: 4, FP: 1/2. Deathlight 15/18

"Do you think you could figure out where the power lines, maintenance and utility systems are locally? It could give us an edge and open up new avenues to use against our target. Perhaps try to spot security systems?" He nods to Delta "As a tech priest unless you're at a critical system I imagine people will leave you go about your presumed duties... with the exception of other representatives of the Mechanicus. In my experience you leave the Priesthood of Mars alone unless you have a very good reason to do otherwise."

"Even if getting a good look at the manse's security proves difficult given the time frame we are talking about figuring out which power lines supply the house could be of use. In case we need to cause a unexpected halt to that supply at a key moment it could be invaluable."

Lothar will be both watching the comings and goings in the area as well as talking to locals. If anyone asks he's seeking out business opportunities and new partners in the Hive to do business with.
