Social Combat:

Let me first thank Sir Dunstan and his excellent Game of Thrones campaign as the inspiration for this rules tweak. A shout out to Vitaliano who also does an excellent job as a player in that campaign.

Game of Thrones has a Social Combat system that, while not translatable directly, I used as inspiration for this campaign.

This is a proposed rules set and I am more than happy to hear feedback from Players before I implement it in full.

Roleplaying is still required to get your point across. However, I think a mechanical system could be beneficial for this scenario, a scenario quite unlike anything I have ever done in a Vampire game before.

Making My Case

To convince a “voter” to side with your Sire, you may roll the following set of Attributes and Abilities:

1. Against someone who is clearly NOT in your favor --- Manipulation+Subterfuge+Politics
2. Against someone who is NEUTRAL – Charisma+Expression+Politics

The difficulty of all rolls is that Cainites Willpower. You will need to score as many successes as they have Willpower to win the contest. Once you engage the voter, you will only have three rounds to make your case and can only attempt do so one time per night.

If you have Presence – Awe or Enrancement, you may attempt to use these powers in conjunction with the above roll. Each success utilizing that Discipline gives you one more success on your total roll.

Beware, failing in using Presence in Elysium can lead to Sanctions by Thomas Brexiano.

Also beware, Cainites may try to turn this system around on you…

But What if Someone Else Tries This on a Voter I just Brought to my Side?

Amount of successes is a key factor here, you will want to score as many success as you can to ensure that a rival does not try to take that vote from you!

Certain NPC’s already believe that others are in their favor and would never change their votes. Those will be the toughest cookies to break.

Note this system cannot be used on:

Your In-Clan rivals, no amount of sweet talking or bribes will change their minds they all want this position badly.

Prince Narses, he simply will not entertain such discourse. Of course, this does not mean you cannot try to get into the ears of one of his Childer to have them speak with him…

Discerning My Quarry’s Intent

How can I tell if someone is for or against me despite what they are saying?

Make a Perception+Empathy+Politics roll.

The difficulty is 10, less that Cainites Humanity score. Those closer to the Beast are much harder to read. For every Century over 300 years that Cainite has lived, the DC will be increased by 1, topping out at 10, as these Cainites have well and truly mastered this game to have existed for so long in the first place.

Once you engage the voter, you will only have three rounds to ferret out their intent and can only attempt do so one time per night. You will need to score as many successes as they have Willpower to ascertain their intent.

If you have Auspex – Read the Soul or Invade the Mind, you may attempt to use these powers in conjunction with the above roll. Each success utilizing that Discipline gives you one more success on your total roll.

How else can I make my case?

The use of Presence, while frowned upon, is much less cause for censure than using Dominate. Dominate does not work on a Cainite whose blood is closer to Caine than your own. If you seek to use Dominate to convince a voter (or perhaps one of the Childer?) to vote for your Sire, it would be best used elsewhere in the city.

Boons – the boon system of quid pro quo can also be used to gain votes. You will need to offer something of course that that voter does not have or cannot get from another candidate.

Eliminate my rivals. This one is obvious though failure to do so without detection may subject YOU to the Final Death!

For a split second you feel your body seize as wood almost pierces your heart, you smack the offending stick away and your body absorbs the wound in a way you could have never as a Mortal!

The Hunters call down, "My next shot will not miss!"

Alyssa rushes up the stairs, "No more time for subtlety..." She activates Celerity to reach the top of the stairs in a split second. And is shot at! The crossbow bolt deflects off of her chest harmlessly.

If you spend 1 BP for Celerity you will be at the top of the stairs but will not have an attack action at the start of the next round, if you do not spend it, Alyssa will be alone for a round of combat.

Loyal to a fault, Alessandro expends precious resources to catch up...

Makes no difference, your last one didn't miss. Your weapon is harmless.

As you arrive on the landing you see that both men have drawn bastard swords and Alyssa has taken a defensive position having cleared enough room for you to enter the room. Each wears some sort of armor under their cloaks and on their necks they wear iron collars.

The room is a warehouse, many small boxes and shelves line the walls. Tactically, they would have been better off firing at you from across the room, if they had longbows. The reload on a crossbow is too slow, they know it.

They do not respond to your quip, grim looks of determination are set on their faces, they know it is kill or be killed. However these men envisioned this night going, they must have known that this was a possibility. Much as you hate to slay them, you know for you to live, they must die. They know you and where you live, so to speak.

Round 1 -
Alessandro GO!
Alyssa
Brice & Wilhelm

Venice by Night - Monday March 31, 1309

Via Orsoline - Alessandro Khadaji

Alessandro advances, drawing attention away from his Sire.

I am loathe to kill you, to kill anyone... but I have no choice in the matter.

I even tried working with you until we received a direct order.

What were you trying to accomplish, perhaps your death will not be for nothing. I can promise to try to continue your work.

Your will, your flame is extinguished here and now or... is carried into the future as an ember by me. Unconventional, true. But, these are strange days.

Alessandro's blade sinks into the forearm of Wilhelm, a small wound but likely the beginning of the end. He winces in pain, "That is cold comfort dead one. We have been betrayed by Volkov. Our hearts have died, it is only stubbornness that carries us along now!"

Alyssa likewise moves forward but against Brice, her swing is blunted completely by Brice's armor.

"You'll find us an unsettling meal Fiend!" Brice blurts out as the Hunters strike back.

Wilhelms attack lands against your shoulder Alessandro. Go ahead and Soak 2 Damage.

Brice also lands a blow against Alyssa, this one against her hip but her tough Cainite skin registers no damage.

Alessandro, you take 1 damage. No - dice pools for that damage though.

Your next swing misses as Wilhelm and Brice cross over to switch opponents, it is clear that they have fought together before.

Alyssa's strike is slowed down by the movements of these Hunters and though her stab does nit Wilhelm, his armor absorbs the blow.

The Hunters strike once more, Wilhelm's blade is side stepped by Alyssa.

Brice though scores a solid strike on your left thigh. Go ahead and Soak 3 Damage. You can see that Alyssa has not activated her Celerity, you can this Round if you want to as these damned Humans are solid warriors! If you take 1 or 2 more damage, you will have a -1 to dice pools, of you take the full 3, you will have a -2 to dice pools, those minuses do not affect Soak or Damage pools though.

STS ONLY:

Alyssa Attack 4d10 + 3d10 ⇒ (5, 8, 3, 2) + (8, 7, 2) = 35

You take another hit from Brice. Two damage now and -1 to dice pools. You can heal while in combat by making a Stamina+Survival roll DC 8 (no penalty to this roll. If you fail the blood is expended and you do not heal.

Then return that hit with a glancing blow which the armor once again absorbs the impact of. Mortal though they may be, these men have been well trained to fight!

Alyssa slides to the left away from you and turns her sword back up for an arcing blow, the move gets under Wilhelm's parry attempt and a shower of gore spills onto you and Brice! The man, to his credit keeps his feet. Staggering back a bit.

He steps forward to attack in a clumsy attempt and misses.

Brice takes a swing at you but misses high then suddenly spins on his heel and strikes Alyssa, stepping in front of his ally! His slice catches her shoulder but draws no blood.

She grins, "Outstanding, tis a shame we need to slay you both, what valuable assets you could be!"

Wilhelm Soak 3d10 + 3d10 ⇒ (6, 8, 2) + (5, 8, 10) = 39 - Wilhelm has sustained 5 damage and is in the Maimed Condition, -2 to dice pools.

Wilhelm Attack 3d10 + 1d10 ⇒ (5, 1, 8) + (4) = 18

-1 to dice pools. So Your Blade Attack is 4d10+3d10 it would be reduced to 4d10+2d10 until that damage is healed. Note that only living creatures heal naturally so those wounds remain with a Cainite until blood is used to heal them.

Weakened as he is, your sword is still stopped by his armor.

Alyssa kicks his sword out of his hand!

He rises up to punch you but in his weakened state he can do no more than land a soft blow. You strike him down with one more downward stroke. Brice falls backwards eyes fluttering and then he is still.

Alyssa sighs, "How unfortunate. Still, it was necessary. When Hunters strike by day they can be quite determined. Even with our dual security forces at your Manse it is not a scene we want at your doorstep.

We should go. Even with the night being what it is, better not to get caught in this place with three bodies.

We can inform the Prince tomorrow at Court as to what has taken place here".

Go ahead and give some dialogue back before I close the night out.

Man, those botches were killing you while you had strong damage rolls.

Are their heads a literal requirement?

Alyssa made no motion to cut them off.

Narses asked for their heads, if I recall.

Take 'em! NPCs don't always remember everything :-)

Alessandro reminds Alyssa of Narses' order to return the hunters' heads... unceremoniously collecting them, he heads back.

Alyssa nods grimly as you perform the grim task.

"To home my Love. We will need rest for tomorrow. It s likely that we will be asked to stay at Elysium after we deliver our harvest. Mithras should be Justicar after tonight's meeting and we shall accept that honor in his stead".

You return with Alyssa through the windy rain soaked streets. The rain having died down to a steady, light drizzle. The signs of combat are evident in blood on the cobblestones, weapons abandoned in the streets and in some places bodies.

Navigating around any pockets of battle lusted Mortals you finally arrive at your Manse.

You and Alyssa bathe the grime and blood from your bodies and move to sleep entwined in each others' arms.

End of Night - Gain 2 XP. Head back to the main thread, I will have a post up for you once the current EVENT is concluded.
