Can I ask why you houserule the natural 1/20 on skill checks?
It seems a bit much that the most experienced, skilled, paragon of their field would always fail 5% of the time, no matter how trivial a task they were making.
Also somewhat odd that an untrained novice would be able to craft the most complex creation imaginable if they try 20 times...
Edit: aside from game logic, this means that taking 20 will make many challenges somewhat trivial. E.G. when a player takes 20 on perception they know they discovered everything 100% of the time, etc.

Because in my world the most experienced, skilled, paragon of their field may fail 5% of the time, no matter how trivial a task they were making.
And on the other hand an untrained novice would be able to craft the most complex creation imaginable if they try 20 times and all they needed was a 20. But don't think a non natural 20 will get you a anything out of the ordinary.
Even 1st level commoners can try living the dream.
Also in a world of Vorpal swords and Channel Healing that rule bugs you?

A natural rolled 20 is always a successful roll on a skill check. Most times there will be additional useful in game benefits for making this roll.
A Natural 20 which is rolled is not in any way the same as taking 20, see the rule in the campaign thread, you get no extra benefits taking 20.
And there are several times that taking 20 will be quite unavailable as an option to the party.

"Okay, let's try out these things!"
If I get this right, I'm sure the gameplay will be much smoother
some randome dice rolls
1d20 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (12) + 4 + (4, 6) = 26
More randomness: 7d10 + 16 ⇒ (4, 10, 1, 2, 8, 9, 3) + 16 = 535d8 - 2 ⇒ (8, 2, 3, 6, 6) - 2 = 23
add text to the roll?: 3d4 + 1d12 ⇒ (4, 1, 3) + (4) = 12
Is this still blue?
edit:
edit2:
curious, how often will roll nat 20 here.
so, I can preview the rolls result. Will be useful when we get to iterative attacks and stuff. Nice rolls! hope to keep it up in the game...

Option 2
As a fun alternative you can use the "Focus and Foible" system. Choose a Focus, an ability score at which you excel. You receive an 18 in that score. Then choose a Foible, an ability score that is your weakness. You receive an 8 in that score. The other four, roll 1d10+7 four times in order. There are no rerolls or moving of ability scores. Those are your other four scores.
These will be rolled online in order and may be arranged this way
ST DE CO IN WI CH
Or
ST IN WI DE CO CH
If you are playing you favored class, you get a bonus hit point and skill point per level, instead of having to pick from either.
I see a lot of previews in your dice rolling future.
I actually don't preview, it helps the suspense.
Please explain how your PC came by the Undercommon language? Perhaps we can find you another more fitting language.

Since I grew up in a Rakshasa clan, I looked up the MM for languages spoken by Rakshasa: Common, Dandasuka, Maharaja, Marai, Raktavarna, and Tataka. It seems that they all speak common, undercommon and infernal. Higher intelligence ones speak also abyssal. Based on my intelligence I figured I was taught all of these languages.
If you have reasons to change that, maybe Rakshasas in your game world do not speak undercommon and you want to suggest a different language?Old School Dungeon Master |
Apologies for the shadow-boxing, just wanted to test rolling dice.
Please shadow box all you want on this thread.
Just save your real low rolls for initiative and saving throws on the game thread.
:D
Waiting on the other players, I think the game starts Sunday but I want everyone's PCs ready before then.

That is very interesting. I made that comment more because I wanted you to have a language that you could put to more use, Undercommon won't come up immediately BUT players always surprise me.

Take a peek at Khara Thrust's page. That's some sexy backstory.
And look Fort Save +0 and CON 10. Yuuumy. Player characters for dinner.
ahem

for some reason I can't edit/delete my previous post. Please disregard it. It was written based on the typo of "Take a peek at Khara Thrust's age. That's some sexy backstory."

For some reason I can't post in the game thread.
When I try to, I just get the preview window.
I tried using different aliases or web browsers, for no avail...
Noel, maybe you need to add me to the gameplay or some other settings issue?

Players please have your mini stat block next to your avatar, those that already have this, thank you.
Place the following in order.
Class/Level (HP Full HP/Current HP; AC Total AC/Touch AC/Flat Footed AC; CMD ; Fort Save; Ref Save; Will Save; Initiative Modifier; Perception Modifier; Special Senses)
To do this just place the information on Class/Level section of your character sheet, type it all in, that same line. When you do this all of it will appear with your screen avatar.
It will look something like this
Wizard 5 (HP 44/44; AC 18/18/15; CMD 15 Fort +3; Ref +4; Will +6; Init +3; Perception +10; Darkvision 60 ft)
If you need help with this I can create it for you and you can paste it onto your PC.

Players please Take a good look at each others PC sheets.
I see some possible 'weaknesses' in the group.
And while I have always been surprised at players ideas, inventiveness and luck, I also want you guys to survive, at least for the first few months.
Take a look, you are free to modify your PC for the next 48 hours after this post then you are locked in and I will make print outs of each PC.
(hint - very little in the way of Healing or Disable Device)
Greyfield |
With two rogues and a bard that seems to have taken it as a skill, I think we have Disable Device on lock-down (pun most definitely intended).
Use Magic Device, however.....

See above, it appears some players already modified their character sheets since last night!
Bravo!
Smoak Shadow |
The Oracle gets 1 more spell known as you get either cure or cause spells (players choice as a free known spell at every level where a new one is available. Perhaps infernal heal would fit the bill for his last spell.

It is a very 'Golarionesque' world, in fact you could say it strongly mirrors Golarion.
A lot of Golarion's rules apply here, some do not.
Let's call it 1/4 Golarion, 1/4 Greyhawk, 1/4 Forgotten Realms, 1/4 our Earth from the late 1400's and call it a day.
The gods of Golarion are present but Mitra, the Lord of Light dominates the religious landscape.
Think Church of Rome at the height of her power.

So we can use the names of countries that exist in Golarion with no problem?
Oh and one more thing, this one aimed at the other rogue and the bard, how are you guys building your characters, I am planning on focusing more on social skill, but if either of you two want that role I can pretty easily aim for something different, I have no problem pulling a Pete Rose and playing a different position, or sliding headfirst into things.

Sometimes, like we do at the game table we discuss things that have nothing to do with the game itself.
When I do that I will post as my Avatar so like the game table you can ignore what I say.
This for instance this seems very cool, especially the last minute.
Going to speak to Rene your fellow player then I will be right back.
