"Lady, if I may be permitted?" Sylvath interjects.

"I can have 20 men here in less then five minutes - and plenty of men ready to receive any prisoners at the barracks - or wherever you'd like to store them."

"While I am quite honored that thy would elect only a few our kind to stand as guardian to thee - I should think it would better to have more men. Say the word, lady, and I shall call forth the men that thou would have at a moments notice," he adds.

Isani - you sense that having a large number of armed men may dissuade any problems even more then sorcery or imposing members of your company. If you can gather a large company - it is likely you may use those men to good effect. Of course - the choice is yours. There are quite a number of dangerous men there - that much is clear.

"Sir Sylvath, yes, please assemble twenty of your good men and we can continue to al-Kazeem's houses. Such a show of militia may see the cultist guards surrender peacefully or at least allow us to pass rather than engage us in fight."

Sylvath salutes - then rushes off.

In about five minutes or so he returns and has a company of twenty spearmen with leather armor. However - ahead of them are 4 of his Squires - specifically; Paladin's in training, if not already. They are armed in medium armor - but their swords are not the great heavy blades you are familiar with. Even so - you'd guess they are ranked higher then many standard men at arms - and have been trained hard by Sylvath.

Rather - it seems they favor a lighter style of weapon - more useful for "finesse" rather then cleaving. It seems their training conforms best to Sylvath's own style of training in this regard.

These four look grim and though, though young - you sense they will be able to help you; if their presence alone didn't intimidate the enemy - surely the 20 men with spears would assist in the trick.

Also - it demonstrates the Council's strength - inasmuch as that they are ready to advance to aid in "Cleaning up the Town" - and the Community - from any threat or riffraff.

"Lady - we await thy orders," Sir Sylvath says with a crisp salute.

Female Changeling - Osirion Cleric 4/Oracle 3

"We must be careful in how we approach these cultists. Aggression will only be met by aggression. We show our strength and we respectfully request entry and an interview with whomever is left in charge in place of al-Kazeem. Surely there would be no need for guards if the houses of The Black Kota had nothing valuable within them - they are protecting something and we must know what it is for the safety of our community. Stand your ground men but do not be the first to initiate an attack. I would suggest we permit the Foreign Ambassador the chance to speak, negotiate with the guards and determine whether they can be encouraged to assist us in our inquiry. If they show particular resilience in their duty to guard and protect, then we may need to be more assertive in our request. Some of their guards may be people from our own community -- followers tricked into joining and complying with the cunning leader's orders. We cannot go about killing innocent people influenced by Yuan-ti mind magic or pesh addiction. If we can, I would rather capture all the remaining followers, hold them in the barrack's prison and interview them. There is still so much we do not know about The Black Kota and their plans for the city and the Republic of Praxis. Yet, if they inevitably seek our blood and attack then I would have you defend yourselves, the Council and the great capital of Saravale. Let us proceed, Sir Sylvath. A guard line in front of the Foreign Ambassador and I would be wise and appreciated. I trust in your ability and instinct."

Then turning to speak to her companion, "Do you have anything you wish to add or change, Arasmes?"

Diplomacy with Sylvath and guards: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30

Arasmes looks at the assembled group and says Perhaps if we had some documentation from the Baroness and the council as a whole it would go more smoothly. A warrant to search based upon suspicion of drug trafficking and other illicit activities. If you give me a few minutes I will have one drawn up and sealed with the council's emblem, then we can proceed. I will speak with them at the beginning and hopefully this can all go smoothly.

With that Arasmes will quickly go off and get a document drawn up relating to the search and inspection. Once gotten he will return and they will proceed to the compound.

Sylvath responds to both Isani, and Arasmes.

"Very good sir, I do agree with thee that such a document would assist in legal proceedings. Yet - I have two secondary concerns..."

"The first is, naturally - what if these villains should not wish to come peaceably? Do we have the means to insist? Even if we can overcome them - I would rather intimidate them outright then engage in a combat in the streets. Naturally - I presume that this is thy plan as well. Even so - it leads me to my second concern."

"Your pardon, lord," he says with a bow to Arasmes.

"You speak of dealing with reasonable men, and indeed - I hope this is the case; but from circumstantial evidence and recent observation - our agents believe that these man may be motivated by narcotics already in their blood. Or - they may be motivated by other things then simple loyalty for coin - such as, for example - magical manipulation, or outright blackmail, if not the nuances of fear for a religious cause and offending their "god" - after all, they are supposedly a religious cult."

"In short - they may not be predisposed to engage in reasonable discussion. If that is the case, know that I am willing to assist thee in any manner which thou might need. Simply let me know thy intentions; and I and men will do what it is that thou would ask."

I understand your point Sylvath. I hope they are only motivated by narcotics as I have a good deal of experience dealing with such people. Beyond that if they wish to stay within Saravale they WILL obey the laws. If we do not find anything I will apologize for the inconvenience but the evidence suggests their involvement and as such I must pursue it for the good of the community. As a duly appointed representative of the ruling council of Saravale it is well within my rights to carry out this investigation and we will be steadfast to that cause. That being said, I will attempt to talk to them first and see if they will allow us to move into their property to conduct our investigation peacefully but no matter what, we will be investigating. How we do it will be up to them. Please let me know when you are all ready to proceed. Arasmes smiles and says So to answer your question, my intentions are to gather information about any illicit activities and prosecute them. I want you to keep things calm as much as possible and only strike out in self defense. I do not want this to turn into a bloodbath.

"My men are ready whenever you wish, sir."

"In this I defer to your command - but we can, as I see it - have the men act in one of two ways."

"The first is a primary show of strength in the streets, that thy would address them directly, communicating thy desire, with the full company of men in plain sight, hoping to impress on them the need for obedience; the second method is to have the men move forward, sequester themselves secretly around the house - ready for action - and, should the need arise - they can move forward with all speed."

"What is thy preference regarding these choices?"

Arasmes is thoughtful for a moment before saying I think in this case a direct approach will be best. Though take a few scouts to make sure no one escapes while we conduct our investigation.

With that Arasmes will lead the group to the compound.

Basically I will take the majority of the group to the main entrance and have 3 scouts stationed around the other sides of the compound in order to see anyone trying to escape.

As you approach the building you see several thuggish men step up to block your path. They look fairly big and burly - and they armed.

The chief of them looks you over - then the lads behind you.

"Sorry bub - private property - step off, eh?" he says - more of a statement then a request.

Arasmes smiles and says My apologies for the intrusion but we have a warrant to search these premises. As a duly appointed member of the governing council of Praxis, we have attained information on potential illicit activities that may be occurring on the premises. Your cooperation would be greatly appreciated so that we can take care of our business and be out of your hair. We have no wish for an incident and only seek to make sure the populace is safe, as is our sworn duty.

Also can i get a description of the compound?

The place looks like a large series of shacks in a semi-circle. In the far back of the compound is a stone building - it's roughly 40 feet in width, roughly 12 feet in height - and roughly 30 feet "deep" going back.

The opening in the "semi-circle" is where the thugs are collected. You can advance into it, but that is where they are currently standing, blocking that entrance.

That "entrance" is roughly fifteen feet across. There are clearly 8 "men" present. Two of them are half-elves, the others humans. They are carrying mauls, daggers, clubs and short swords. Their armor seems to be studded leather, and other mis-matched plate male or "breastplates".

They are carrying weapons and standing in front of you, watching you with a nasty expression.

Female Changeling - Osirion Cleric 4/Oracle 3

Isani looks around her and takes in the position of the shacks, the race of the cult's "guards" and the hostile expressions on their face. She sends a silent prayer to the Everlight, asking for her guidance, strength and protection.

She turns to Arasmes and gives him a look. "Perhaps I could say a few words, Arasmes?"

Female Changeling - Osirion Cleric 4/Oracle 3

Looking at the eight men and the evaluating the possible ugly altercation, "Sirs, this is lawful protocol. As Councilmen we have papers granting us access. Please stand down and allow us to do our lawful duty in a peaceful and timely manner. Your leader assured the Baroness Kane that he was friend to Saravale and the Council. Then it becomes you to grant us right of way does it not for you are part of the greater community under the wider leadership of the baroness? Who out of you is in charge? Please state your name."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15 wow, joy, a two.

Glancing between both council members, and the troops behind - the guard does not seem impressed or moved by your legal claims. In fact - something seems amiss here - he seems to be rather unmoved by any of your statements, as if your words don't seem to effect him at all for some reason.

He cocks his head, and looks at the person closest to him; the maul is loose in his hands - and he swings it up to cradle the heavy weight of it in his off-hand.

The mood seems tense - a fight, perhaps immanent - and danger weighing heavy on you as thick as grains of sand pressing into your flesh on a windy day; barely noticeable, until the full amount of the pieces are calculated, then - chaos.

Even so - as he stares between the two of you - the man blinks somewhat - as if he is struggling with some sort of power that seems to be effecting his mind.

He opens his mouth - a pained and confused look on his face...

"Cooperation? My name? I - I don't... who..." he mutters, his eyes suddenly looking distant, staring between Arasmes and Isani.

A sudden voice startles you from the stone building, a you see a figure approach from within walking forward with a bold and purposeful step.

He says something to the man who spoke to you - but you don't know what he says - you recognize the accent and words - and believe it may be a language spoken by some of the Yuan-ti Though that could be a coincidence; naturally, this new man clearly looks human in every way you can see.

His words...:

"Coo ya maya stupa! Keel-ee calleya ku kah!"

"Apologies - master... I failed you - but it will not happen again..." he says turning to the new fellow - stuttering out words in a near panic.

His response::

"Soong peetch alay! Bona nai kachu; uba nee choo!"

- says the new person to the man who spoke.

The man pales noticeably, and bows low, accepting this statement - but says nothing in the presence of this new individual.

He turns and looks at you with a pleasant smile. His eyes glancing quickly past you to all of the guards in the alley - and scanning both Isani and Arasmes briefly but intently - as if he is reading and cataloging them for future reference.

"Ah - apologies - my men are a bit hasty. They do not understand the subtleties of law. Come - you said you are the leaders of this land and you both seek to search this property - a property whom I stand proxy to? If so - surely you have just cause - the entrance into another man's home is not something that is endured lightly, unless there is good reason. However - if you do indeed have just cause - then who am I to argue with the authorities. Instead, I am but a humble guest who stands before you, and is but assigned a dull task. But naturally, I shall not stand in the way of the law of the land," he adds with a polite salaam to you both.

You can see he is dressed in long flowing robes which clearly look southern in style, closer to Orsiniani then Katapesh - but you aren't sure where he is from as his accent is flawless. Meanwhile, his features are, for the most part, covered; a long turban wrapped around his head and face reveal only his mouth and eyes; which are a soft tan color. You notice that his mouth continues to smile - but his eyes are still calculating, waiting for your next move.

Okay gang - what is your next move?

Arasmes smiles back at the man and shows him the warrant. Once that is done he says Sylvath please coordinate with Naga, Ryul, and Sogoth. Each of you take five men and begin your search. I want every tent, building, and container examined. Do not break any property and if you have any issues or find anything, do nothing but stay with it and send a runner to either Isani or myself. Do not harm anyone who does not try and harm you first. I do not want any incidents. I have the utmost faith in you all.

Returning his gaze to the man he says My apologies for not introducing myself. I am Arasmes ibn'Fayad and this is Isani Isu. I am a member of the ruling council of the nation of Praxis and by extension the capital of Saravale in which you reside. Thank you for your cooperation as we hope to be out of here without incident and with as little disruption as possible to you and your companions. Might I have your name sir?

The man smiles - and turns to one of his comrades.

"You - take care of what needs to be taken care, of," he says with a wide grin to one of his man, and suggests that the men assist in the helping you with the search.

"It is a pleasure to meet you, sir. I am truly pleased to meet someone who is so courteous in this town," he adds, as one of the men bows and huries into the primary stone building as the other men lead your folk to the other shacks.

You notice this is the same man who held the maul...

"Well - as for my name, you may simply call me... Smyth."

"Yes - that is a good name, though - no doubt - you suspect that is not my correct name. And of course - you'd be correct, for it is not. Of course - it shall suffice," he adds with a smile.

As your men advance quickly to the surrounding shacks to move forward one after the other, the man turns to you again.

"Apologies for any issues you may have had. These men are certainly not the... brightest, yes?" he asks.

The man who left to "take care of things" has rushed inside the stone building even as your men fan out. As you exchange pleasantries - a sudden explosion of smoke and noise catches your attention. The stone building which the man entered has exploded in sudden flame - and fire and smoke billows out the windows furiously.

"Oh my goodness!" Smyth cries out in horror.

"What's going on - quickly, quickly - we must do something to stop this dreadful accident!" he adds turning to you and Isani wringing his hands desperately.

"Please mister and madam Council Members - surely there is something you can do! I trust your magics can assist?" he implores.

Indeed - that much is correct. You can take action to stop this - however; what is your move? Just let me know!

Yeaah I totally would not have let someone go off on their own to destroy evidence. Hence the multiple teams. Oh well, live and learn lol.

Arasmes turns and looks at the man and says How...unfortunate for you. Turning back with a wry look on his face he yells to Sylvath. Gather everyone into the center of the compound and keep them there! Looking towards the blaze he sends out a call to the spirits residing upon the plane of water to come to his aid. Summon Monster IV Spell like ability to summon a Medium Water Elemental who immediately uses its Drench ability to immediately snuff out Large sized fires with a touch.

Turning back to the man, Smyth he says Now what was in there that you did not want us to see I wonder? Oh I know you will deny it but we both know what is going on here. I hope you also realize that now you have given me a safety issue upon which to necessitate a much larger and more thorough search as I cannot have a dangerous situation where buildings can explode.

Turning to Ryul he says Send one of your men back to town and bring Councilmans Malas'rae and Rowan back here with additional men as we have a safety issue on our hands that must be dealt with swiftly.

Turning back to Smyth, Arasmes continues smiling as the elemental puts out the fire.

The Elemental goes to work as soon as possible - even so, you have the strange impression that though this is happening quickly - the building is burning much faster the a simple drop of a match. It's almost as if the place was set up to burn - and burn quickly!

Even so - the Elemental goes to work and you suspect the house will be extinguished very quickly.

"Oh my! Thank goodness you were able to take such action!" Smyth says, dabbing his forehead with a handkerchief.

"Oh - that reminds me...." he adds, with a sly grin and a wry chuckle.

Slipping his hand up inside his robe, he slides something up near his face - and suddenly you are surprised to see that he has turned a dagger on himself, and the blade slips quickly up under the soft part of his chin, and stabs directly into his brain.

He quickly pitches forward into your arms - dead.

However - you are able to direct the Elemental at its work. The fire is being put out. Even so - you notice now that the men who were ready to fight you - they seem somehow disconnected and somewhat confused.

They do not move to help or hinder you - but even as the fire billows and the massive amounts of smoke that rise up causes your men to cough and gasp - including them - instead of them ducking from the smoke, or throwing themselves to the ground for safety - they merely stand there and endure whatever is happening.

Though some of them seem okay with the smoke, as they are not in direct range of it - others are clearly choking and gagging, and near death - as the majority of deaths that happen during fires are a result from smoke inhalation, rather then standing close enough to fire to be burned.

You are confident that this can be dealt with quickly if Isani summons an Air Elemental and directs it safely to banish the smoke; or - if the folk simply wrap wet rags around their faces and mouth, duck down from the smoke on to the ground and tough it out for a few minutes - basically, it's not likely to be any more damaging then tear gas.

Even so - what you notice with the "thugs" is, perhaps, worth noting, as they are not doing anything to take cover - but they are also not attempting to hinder you, either.

No chance to stop him then? Can Isani get a chance to heal him? I wouldnt ask except it reminded me of this picture ...and he survived lol.

anyway I'm going to bed. have a good night everyone.

Female Changeling - Osirion Cleric 4/Oracle 3

Isani places a hand across her nose and mouth so as to not breathe the fumes in. The people near the blaze and acrid smoke were not moving and would be asphyxiated by the smoke soon enough. She calls out to people, "Get down, low to the ground!"

Diplomacy with thugs and people: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32

Once she has given the warning/instruction, Isani summons a small air elemental (Summon Monster II) and it appears as soon as the words are spoken and the call made across the planes (Sacred Summons feat - the spell is a standard action instead of 1 round casting). In Auran she instructs the elemental to attentively push the billowing smoke away from the people and the town, thus allowing them to breathe once more.

Female Changeling - Osirion Cleric 4/Oracle 3

Frustrated that the one who called himself Smyth took his own life rather than face the scrutiny and justice of the Council, Isani quickly issues a discreet order to one of the guards closest to her, "Go now, locate the Lady Ariarh. Ask her to bring the scroll from the southlands. She will know which I mean." Scroll to Raise the Dead we discovered with al-Kazeem's dead lot. Isani is being deliberately vague in case there are further spies listening ... hoping to gain information. As yet the Council had not announced their possession of the scroll or any of the other precious items found on the dead cultists.

Perhaps in the Barrack's prison, they could use the scroll to bring Smyth back to life so they may interrogate him.

Female Changeling - Osirion Cleric 4/Oracle 3

She then quickly moves to Smyth (now prone by Arasmes' feet) and laying her hand down against his heart, she tries to determine if he is indeed dead or there is some life still in him. Yes, I know you said he was dead because the knife went into his brain but Isani is checking ... just in case.

They seem confused and unaware what is happening to them."

Quick responses -

1. Your people obey you instantly - but these guys - they don't. It almost seems as if they are in a haze - they don't do anything to harm you - but neither do they do anything to help you or listen. And meanwhile - they don't even seem to be interested in saving themselves.

2. You summoning spell works - and in no time the spell causes the smoke to be channeled up like a whirlwind - straight up to the sky.

While I know there was some debate at the size/weight of the thing effected by the whirlwind - what is certainly clear is that smoke can be lifted with some ease, like a funnel cloud.

3. You are free to try to raise him - but Isani would know the spell Raise Dead does not have to work - that is, if you try to raise someone, and they don't want to come back, they can refuse. This is actually a good thing, in case one of your friends got caught by evil priests, they couldn't torture someone to death - then raise them - then do so again.

It may be possible to use the Sorcerer's Stone - however... er - the gem? That could work, as there seems to be no penalty to do so. The question is - would you want to? That could come in more useful later... then again; this is your decision, or rather - the Council's I suppose.

Even so - you are free to search the house. Based on the quick thinking - there may be something useful in there as of yet...

Sylvath will instantly order his men to drag the thugs down to the ground - for their own protection. They do not resists - and you discover that the man is certainly dead - via your heal check.

Arasmes steps over the body after Isani confirms he is dead and says Perhaps we can get something out of the others but I doubt it considering the compulsion that was placed upon them, warping their minds. Sylvath, once these people are gathered in the center please take half the men and continue with the search. Isani and I, if she is amenable, will take a look in the stone building and see what we can find. Looking over at Isani he gives her his arm and says Shall we habibty? With that he will enter the building and see what was so important to burn.

Female Changeling - Osirion Cleric 4/Oracle 3

Isani takes Arasmes extended arm with a small nod of thanks and carefully enters the still smoldering stone building. She raises her arm to her nose so she does not breathe in the polluted air and gag on the acrid smell inside the building. Fortunately, the air elemental had cleared away the troublesome clouds of dark smoke.

As she scans the room, she adjusts her eyes passed the steam rising from certain places (thanks to the work done by Arasmes' water elemental to put out the blaze), trying to see what was so important inside that al-Kazeem's thugs had to set a whole building on fire to conceal the truth.

The body of the apparent cultist leader – dead by his own hand, and with his own stiletto blade still plunged into the soft tissue under his jaw – lies at your feet as you step over the corpse. The thick layers of smoke still rise in massive waves into the afternoon sky. Your own men, for the most part, are still choking and gasping a bit from the massive plumes of that same smoke, even as two elementals – water and air – are still slaving through the remains of this part of the camp to both extinguish flames and divert the smoke.

The remaining cultist thugs simply stand still and stare blankly – their minds seemingly warped by either drugs or sorcery – and your men and forcing themselves from shack to shack – even as you decide to take the arm of the other desert person and advance forward into the stone building.

Sylvath’s eyes widen at your casual way with Isani in the midst of this horror - but only a moment – but he quickly stifles whatever he is thinking or feeling, nods his head briskly – and salutes.

”As you command, sir,” he says, watching you both for a moment, then quickly turns to carry out your orders.

As you both advance to the stone building you see the black smoke billowing while the others continue to do what they do. Normally you could “take 20” on your perception to search – and can still do so. But for this – speed is essential as there are a few things inside that you may want to attempt to recover before they are destroyed. NOTE: It may not be fire that is destroying them – but speed will be useful. So a Perception Roll will be useful to find what you’re looking for quickly.

Indeed. Well – more on the results soon – I’ll wait to see if Isani wants to toss up an “assist” – though at this point I don’t think it will matter. Even so – I think I’m going to crash out; then I’ll post up some tomorrow.

Dain, did you give me Phinneas Higonbotham's stat sheet? I need it to work things out for my barony -- as he is going to be my Treasurer. Thanks.

Ah - I do not think I gave you Higgonbothom's sheet - will soon.

Meanwhile - you are right - missed the role. Sorry - my mistake.

Will put up results of search soon. Point is - your combined total beat the DC of 30 - which means you'll find some interesting stuff soon. Just need to write it up.

Ariarh Kane wrote:

Entering the room as quick as you can, given the fire and other issues – you quickly glance through the primary room. It’s filled with the remains of a relatively comfortable sitting area. Low couches – the remains of nice rugs of quality, now ruined – and some other various things that you would find in a sitting area, but again – filled with smoke, and other damage – salvageable, perhaps – but fairly inconsequential.

The following room has a heavily bolted door – however; the bolts are on the inside, but the explosion inside the room managed to slam outwards toward the bolted door – blowing it out and toward you.

In other words, someone was in the room, bolted the door from the inside – and blew up some explosive things – which blew outwards in all directions – and blew the door and the bolts apart, toward where you are standing – so that you are now able to pull the boards of the door aside and walk into the room.

The room itself is filled with various scrolls and documents in neat files scattered about the room. Whatever was written on them is destroyed. There is a table and some oil lamps and braziers – all destroyed. There is a body of a guard by the door; he is clearly dead – it seems that he has blown things apart inside the room – causing the explosion inside the room. Your search makes you believe that he has covered the documents and scrolls with oil so they will be destroyed.

You also believe that their were some alchemical solutions in clay jars – based on the way the explosions look – which make it look they blew apart like bombs. Their explosions left huge chunks of scattered rock and wood all over the room.

However – what draws your attention intently is what look small glass cages – like terrariums.

These cages are roughly six inches deep, by twelve inches in height, and one foot in width. Inside, on the bottom of them, is about three inches of sand. There are – or were – 18 of them. They are destroyed now – and most of them are empty, the glass and rocks crushing or destroying whatever is inside.

However – your excellent search reveals that one of the cages has something in the bottom of it – and it is still alive – but barely.

It looks like a small bug, perhaps a worm, perhaps a tiny version of a scorpion – you are not certain. It is very tiny – about one sixteenth of an inch in diameter – and about one inch long… roughly. It is twisting and struggling a bit, and seems alive, but barely – though you suspect it could be salvaged via a healing spell.

That much is clear.

You find a scrap of paper – linked to one of the pages, that has not been touched by the blaze. You are able to read a few words on the paper – and it makes you believe the creature is a type of insect indigenous to the deep deserts to the south west of Osirion – closer to Mwangi. You think you may have heard of this insect before – clearly it is important, that is clear.

Note: Anyone who wants to make a Knowledge: Nature check may attempt to do so. But they need to have spent time in the desert before – preferably Osirion, or near that area – though any desert will do. Understanding this “Scorpion-like worm” may have very important results. However – it should be noted – one of them still lives. What do you do with it?

Isani's Knowledge, Nature check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26

"Arasmes, this one lives still but has been wounded. I would like to heal it so we may study it further. What say you?"

Isani draws closer to the small glass cage and looks at the tiny creature.

Arasmes nods and says I have no idea what it is but it definitely seems important and therefore it is important to us.

Female Changeling - Osirion Cleric 4/Oracle 3

Isani channels healing energy once and then a second time toward the tiny creature clinging to life in the glass jar and concentrates the healing on it. Note: If there are any allies around them who require healing, Isani will ask them to gather close together and she will heal them also in these channels.

Channel Energy #1 out of 10: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 4) = 7
Channel Energy #2 out of 10: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 3) = 9

16 HP returned to it -- hopefully enough to keep it alive.

Your rolls reveal the following –

The creature is a small Vermin type creature – it is carnivorous. It goes into a creature – feasting on its flesh like a maggot. However – it should be noted that if they are deliberately forced into the skull, typically forced into the ear - sometimes the eye, then the creature will typically burrow its way inwards toward brain, chewing through the ear canal until it reaches the brain’s cerebral cortex – burrowing deeper until is able to wrap around the base of the cortex.

There – the creature will continue to gnaw and feast on the brains electronic impulses – it takes power from electric energy and it can gain energy from electricity.

However – it should be noted that a victim, if it is so bonded by one of these creatures – will become extremely open to suggestion. This victim, or host creature, will then be forced to bind all of its free will to the suggestions of the first creature that it comes in contact with.

In short – you believe these scorpion creatures have proto-psychic tendencies which can override the mind of a host creature. You believe this power is done by strangling off the ability to reason and devours the part of the brain relating to free will. You believe these wild insects have been bred, specifically for the purpose to be forced into the cranium of victims – so that they bond with the brain of said victims – and so that the victims are left open to suggestion.

You believe a victim – even if they are so bonded – may be able to resist the suggestion – possibly. But if so – the scorpion-like beast that binds itself to the brain will simply constrict tighter and cause the victim pain.

Once the victim has been Bonded by the first creature it sees, then each time the victim decides to go against decision that is contrary to the will of the master – then the victim must make a Willpower Save – DC of 20 and they may resist that action. However – they must suffer 1d4+1 HP Damage each time they resist. This will continue to be done until the creature is dead – or the victim. More on how the creature can be killed when it is bonded to a victim may be discovered – but not without appropriate research. You may conduct this research on the living creature – but it will take time and effort.

If you show these results in the Council - Brett will request the creature for his non-existent (as of yet) Supernatural Investigation Department to examine the creature – he seems to think that there may be more to them, and he also believes that there may be more victims in the town who could use assistance from these creatures… But as of now – he does not know how to deal with discovering them – or curing the victims!

Sometime during the first month – after Ariarh has formally started building her buildings.:

Anaitis nes-Ma’at urged her mount forward. Her golden eyes glanced to the left and right with uncertain suspicion. But that was reasonable – she was not a trusting person by nature, and was unused to the open lands and countryside – preferring instead the deserts, the deep caverns – and the nuances of walled cities with their innumerable ways to conceal one’s self.

Her pale green skin was covered by a long cloak, and under it her armor gleamed, and the sword that dangled from her side felt comfortable as she advanced over the plains – the size of the trees in the distance looking dark and foreboding. Even still – she stilled her worries and advanced. She was on an errand for her new lord, and besides – she was on the way to confer with a neighbor and discuss with her the nuances of what she had believed to be important from her discoveries – though this information was, perhaps – overdue.

According to her lord – to east were massive forests filled with dark creatures, and she must not stray too far east – for she could become ensnared in the web of such beasts. Even so – she continued to ride, hoping that she would be able to find evidence of the comfort of cities – their stone walls and shadows to hide from any enemies.

Silence thy cowardly ways, woman! What – art thou a child in the wilderness that thou should tremble before the heights of trees? Further – thou art on a quest for thy new lord, and – moreover – thou shall discover with thy eyes the lands of she who is descended from the gods above. This is a noble thing – cling to that instead of diverting from it – and do so with honor.

She raised her chin and kicked her heels into the flanks of the horse – urging it faster to what caused her nervousness. She would not let fear deter her.

In time Anaitis arrived at the eventual river – she knew the river ran south, but if she remained on the western bank and traveled north – she would eventually arrive at the foundations of the land that the Lady Ariarh wsa constructing.

Soon the river was discovered and she turned her horse to the left and began the quick advance north – maintaining the western bank as she did – not trusting the eastern side of the waters – and clearly suspicious of any danger from that side; her eyes frequently scanning the skies for any crows, a creature she had been told was – perhaps – more than a mere beast…

In time she saw series of small broken cliffs – perhaps 60 or 70 feet, stretching a bit above the trees. Figures are working there – and she sees folk bustling about the forest’s base – moving and working – clearing land and making room for houses.

She checks her mount and looks intently on the land – wondering what to do next – when her eyes narrow and she spies a small and strange company.

There are various men and elves – possibly half elves – and they seem to be working on a small clump of trees. Some of them are taking long cords of rope and sectioning out certain trees or wide areas of trees – while others are marking various trees. She wonders why they seem to be marking the trees in various ways, but as she considers this she spies a very unusual thing.

A strange figure with spectacles is sitting on a pony – he seems to be directing things and giving orders. One of the men with the ropes has clearly seen her – and indicates to the figure on the pony – who turns to face Anaitis. He swings his mount around and kicks his pony into a brisk trot – and is soon riding to Anaitis, who waits for him. Behind him – on a massive horse – is another figure riding a bit more clumsily. This figure looks mannish – but is no man. In fact – she thinks she has seen such a beast before – in the cages of the slaves taken for experimentation. One of these “Ape Men’ perhaps? Except this is far more bestial – it looks larger, and more dangerous, and far more primitive.

The two ride for her – and she waits, watching them approach.

When they are less than twenty paces from her – she is able to see them better. The figure on the pony she has seen before. He is called a ”gnome” – and was believed to be an aid to some various citizens in the capital city south. Now he has switched his allegiance to She of the Topaz Eyes. Yet was with this creature next to him? This “Ape Man” – was it indeed one of the creatures here former masters worked on?

No – it was, in fact – an ape!

Yet what an ape… He was wearing clothes – as a man, a loose pair of trousers on his legs, a heavy breastplate on his chest – and a metal helm – curved slightly, like southern folk, and with strange runes on it. Further – in his hand something was held – like a spear. Yet on closer inspection – as they approached, Anaitis was shocked to see it was some form of firearm – even as her lord possessed!

The gnome halted in front of her, a calm expression on his face – even as the other creature reigned in the horse a bit clumsily – holding the firearm and watching her with dark eyes on his squat face.

”Greetings sir, I am on an errand to see thy mistress and give unto her some news from my lord to the west,” she says stiffly.

The gnome looks her up and down briefly.

”Papers, please,” he says politely.

She is confused at this request.

”Pa - ? Papers? But surely – that is to say – my presence is known – thou cannot mistake me for another…” she responds in a confused voice. There are barely 30 of her folk with all the realm of this nation – and she knows she has been marked and recognized, for she is free with her ways and has been seen besides. What need have this fellow for “papers” – does he doubt her integrity?

”No doubt, miss – but in this land we do things properly – and by the book; especially under my supervision. You are a guest in this land – the Imperatix of this land desires peace for her citizens. While it is almost certain that you are who you say you are – and on the mission that you inform us with – it is also possible that you are not. As such – I require evidence from all newcomers who enter the land without her say-so; this is not a place where we tolerate criminals or other ruffians – if your business is good and honest – then you are welcome.”

”Aye – my business is as thou named it, good and honest; I am no spy, I attest to it,” she adds with a bit of a frown as she removes some documents from her lord from a pouch at her side and urges her horse forward to hand them over.

As she draws closer – the ape seems suspicious – and lowers the muzzle of the weapon to her, his eyes staring at her intently. Watching him carefully - she hands over the documents to the gnome.

”What if I were a private person who wished to make a home on thy lands? Would thou show me the same discretion – or do all the folk who wish to live here suffer such examination – or else be turned away? Surely a new colonist has no papers as I do – what then?”

The gnome – who has removed a jeweler’s loupe and examines the seal and signature of Councilman Rowan meticulously even as he answers her from his examination.

”Colonists are always welcome. They invited to the main town – where they meet the local leaders who give them a polite introduction and a general overview of how the Imperatix elects to run her own lands. Once they understand things – they are free to begin the process of such things that colonists will do, such as making a home – taking up a craft or business – or, perhaps – discovering that this land is not to their taste. If that last option is the case then they may simply turn around and leave for another land. However - here we expect our citizens to conduct themselves with some decency, good manners, and a general attitude of civility to one and another. If this is not to the taste of the citizen – naturally they are free to leave. But the Imperatix does not want bullies, or thieves, or ruffians. Only goodly folk who are here to make a peaceful town with harmony and a friendly spirit,”

He glances up at her briefly after that last stament, examining Anaitis a moment, considering something; then shrugging to himself.

”However – you are armed and armored – have little gear on you but for a few days ride – this suggests to me that you are no colonist. Further – I don’t need any suggestions on the matter – as you formally admitted as much to me directly.”

”But – thou expressed doubt with my admission,” she sputters.

”I am merely checking to see if you are who you say you are – namely; a messenger from the western Barony – and it seems that you are. Excellent! In that case – let us ride to my Lady’s Home,” he adds.

Taking back her papers, she shrugs somewhat – accepting this, still watching the ape ride by them.

She looks to the trees, watching the ropes.

”Pardon sir – what is it that they are attempting to do with yon ropes?”

”Ah! A good question lady. They are using the ropes as borders – naturally, some trees must be felled for roads and trails – but the Imperatix desires an aesthetic to her land that is more pleasing and gentle. She wishes for green things – and beautiful lands. Therefore – the trees that do not need to be felled shall not be – and these ropes mark them. Further – the elven maids that you see there?” he add, pointing to a goodly group of elven women and half-elven women – aided by some of the men ”They are recently released from bondage – and come here to make a new home for themselves. They are assisting in the forestry work – and are attempting to mark certain trees for buildings.”

”Buildings, sir?”

”Yes indeed! The Imperatix believes that a safety measure may be taken against certain wandering beasts and more pedestrian threats – as well as preserve the self-same aesthetic – if homes were built in the trees; and possibly rope bridges built to connect them all. This is – therefore – one of her plans. She wishes to build – in addition to the homes on the ground – homes in the trees as well. The ones best suited for such homes are currently being marked,” he adds in a pleasant way – completely relaxed and comfortable now that he is confident her paperwork is in order.

Anaitis continues to make side-long glances at the ape – who still can ride, and seems to carry a firearm of sorts.

”Your pardon sir – prithee; thou hast this ape in thy care – yet it rides like a man may. Further – it wears clothing as a man – and caries arms besides. Is it not one of these same “Ape Men” that had horrible experiments done to them in the south?”

”Not at all – this is a true ape,” he returns breezily.

”But – but then – how did it learn these skills? Surely thou must teach it how to do these individually – as any beast must be taught tricks, and these are far too many tricks to learn for one beast, yes?”

”True. A beast must learn tricks – unless the goodly beast could speak our words. Luckily – this one can – though he understands more then he can speak.”

Anaitis looks at the ape in shock!

The ape turns to her, and gives her a dark look – but a rough smile.

”I speak some man words, yes,” he says in a gutteral voice and a thick grunt.

”Very good, Zaius – yet, in the future - you should say - I CAN speak some words of men - alright? After all, that is the correct way,” the gnome says as a schoolteacher would to a student.

”Ah – but sir – how did this beast learn these things – and further – why should he bond himself so readily to thee?” Anaitis asks.

”Ah my good miss – firstly; knowledge is the key to unlocking the mysteries of life. If you have knowledge, and you can teach another – then you are able to give them a true gift – which I have done, though with difficulty – and you see the results! Secondly – Zaius has been with me since I found him alone in Absolom – for sale in a common market! I could not tolerate such a fine animal – even though he was only a babe – to be made a slave or used for sport – so I freed him. The rest – as the bards often say – is history,” he adds as they ride forward to the wide open place that houses the initial buildings for Ariarh’s lands. There – they shall no doubt find her so that Anaitis can proceed with the interview between herself and Ariarh.

I'm think of creating a 'mayor' for my barony. One that could fill in for Ariarh when she is out and visiting the capital or other lands or on quests. Is this alright? That way the 'ruler' position is always filled in her barony.

Well, actually - the "Ruler" is basically supposed to be your "Mayor" as I saw it - for exactly that plan. Naturally - you're the boss of the town - but the "mayor" is the one who executes the nitty-gritty details of running the show - you say "Mayor - do X" - and the mayor will respond "Of course - and I'll get it done in record time - because I know how to!" - and then - the mayor gets it done.

The mayor would therefore function kind of like "Drake" does in your town - he is the "mayor" of Oleg's Place - as Oleg is the owner of the land, and Drake is the "ruler" - but that's exactly the plan!

Good job, Ry. I am eager to see your mayor - somehow I envision your mayor as "President Laura Roslin" - but then again - I may be way off :)

Eager to see more whoever it is, though.

Thanks for clarifying, Dain. I shall finish my Mayor today at some point. Am babysitting, so yes having to multitask. ;)

Not if you had your mayor done - he could micro-manage the wee ones - while you send your spymaster to make sure they're not being crazy - and you can relax with a box of tasty things - and that will be deliciousness!

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

Most unusual that she remained in the capital while the others in the party travelled on a quest, especially her new aid and companion, Lia. This time it was to seek out their missing allies, Mak Morn and Ironhorse, and she grew anxious as the days passed and the two had not returned to the village. Patty Ironhorse was beside herself and made regular visits to the Keep seeking new information. Mayhap she has divined something bad and this is what makes her grow ever more anxious...Please let them be alive, though fear gnawed at her prayer.

Looking down at Dior, sitting by her feet in the council chamber, "I wonder how the others' fare? If their quest had been fruitful, I am sure we would have heard word by now", Ariarh's brow furrows in thought and worry.

Dior looks at her with wide golden eyes and nods his head, agreeing with his mistress.

"Ah yes - thy allies. Never fear - our lord Apsu will protect them well; and if by some chance they suffer, we shall surely avenge them." Anuk-su says, patting you gently on the knee.

"Meanwhile - while we art here - what is thy plan on the nation as a whole? As leader of these citizens folk, thou certainly have much to consider on these matters, eh?" she asks you with wide eyes.

Female Silver Dragon My Level of Class is unmatched by any and all!

Private Conference with Anuk-su:

You enter Anuk-su’s private chambers, where you see her working at a desk.

On the wall above her is a very ornate set of crudely drawn, but lovingly rendered, pictures of a knight with Ustalavian heraldry.

She has also practicing her languages, and you notice that her firm flowing script has (in various tongues) “Anuk-su Seti – throthplighted to Sir Kyle Dashan” – “Kyle Seti” and Anuk-su-Seti Dashan”. You notice she has scribbled over this last one, and has put a something that looks like a bold “check” by “Kyle Seti”…

Seeing you approach, she quickly closes her papers and turns to greet you.

”Ah, good evening honored sister. Well – I have heard rumor from the folk about town that you wish you – like me – could fly,” she says in what is already shaping up to be a rather smug beginning; you sense.

Dior, who has followed you behind, rolls his golden eyes, and contents himself to be a bit of a pest behind you – somewhat flighty you’d think.

If you didn’t know better; you’d think he was starting act like a “teenager” – and you’re not sure, but his shoulders seem higher then they used to off the ground… Of course, it has been a little over an entire year since he was presented to you as a freshly hatched “cub”.

Meanwhile, Anuk-su steeples her fingers, and you sense with growing impatience she’s eagerly planning on coming to the point with a frustratingly slow relish.

”Naturally thou art aware that I have heard of this quandary before; what with thy sad predicament to remain on the earth while we more advanced creatures soar over head,” she begins.

”Naturally, I grieved for you sister,” she says with a melodramatic shake of her head ”And I wished I could help. However – it took time to put the pieces together before I could really offer a solid suggestion on that point.

She pulls out a neatly bound folder – and dumps it unceremoniously onto the desk between you, a pile of notes inside; which she quickly arranges.

”Now then – let us proceed thusly; with the facts collected and then we shall begin to unravel this mystery.”

”Firstly – you discovered me by chance or fate – the gods led you to me, it seems. However – during that time, I should add that you were also guided by the machinations of vile men. Even so – if there is wisdom – consider the source, yes – but also; do not turn aside from wisdom, even if the source be foul; for who has made knowledge, if not the gods?”

Seeing your look – she hurries on.

”Now – the reason I was taken and captured, as was my brethren; was because there was a man who wanted to use me for a purpose.”

”This man deemed me to have great value; which I do – but more so in keeping with his own dark arts and methods.”

”His first clue was the understanding that sorcerer’s often have unique bloodlines – some have Fey, others have Djinn, others still – dragon! This bloodline would be mixed 1,000’s of years ago – dormant; then one day – it would appear and a sorcerer would be born with great power within him.”

”After that clue, he hypothesized – What if the blood could be mixed directly with the subject – to be undiluted, and pure? What would it do to the potency of the magic; and what other blood could there be induced?”. His speculations fell short; for the most part – because he could not wholly get his methods of mutations correct; nor did he have pure dragon blood to work with.”

”This – of course – was thy second clue. He needed pure dragon blood to begin his real experiment. And he had it – with me – but you saved me before that foe could act.”

”The next clue I discovered – and again; this was purely by happenstance – after all, sister, one piece alone is not enough; there needs be more to make a single fact a realization – we dragons have mated before with humans; if we find one worthy – which is likely where the bloodline began. Naturally – you knew this as well; due to my constant pestering about the magnificent Sir Dashan,” she blushes slightly, but continues however – this proves that; unlike troll blood, draconic blood can work. Troll blood - not very well - for when it is introduced into a human – the problem is normally that the troll blood will attempt to “regenerate” inside the human, until it overwhelms the human blood, killing the host. Or the host itself will use its own anti-bodies to fight the troll blood and destroy it.”

”This is because – as of now; there is no known way to blend blood that is incompatible. But we know from my… my… observations with Sir Dashan – and other studies – that such a bond of blood; between species can happen, to great effect; and without hurting the host – even as you have, somewhere in your past – the blood of angels”

”This brings me to my next point – valid, though a bit of stretch, perhaps. Angels are, of course – heralds of the good aligned gods. My lord Apsu is in fact; a good aligned god. Would you have the blood of a red dragon introduced into you; I fear it would contest your angelic blood like a poison. But a good aligned dragon? Why sister – surely you can see with even minor spell that my blood is certainly both Good and Lawful besides? Therefore – why should my blood be incompatible with yours; as you already have angelic blood in it – and, moreover; you have human blood – which we know mixes with draconic.”

She sighs, and shakes her head.

”Now we touch it; though – sadly, I suspected that if this experiment would proceed – I would have to encourage you to do something against your nature. I would fear that you would be less eager for blood mixed with yours – and besides – you may ask; how would we mate… and if you seek to hear comments from either General Malas’Rae or Mister Grishnak – on how we two could "Mate"! Grah! I’ll castrate them before hearing those suggestions,” she ends tersely.

Pausing a moment, she proceeds.

”But then I thought of the next clue – namely – the methods of the redoubtable Mister Gragkh – the little goblin warrior that rides after Mister Tyrell like his dog? He was my next clue; a person who insisted that if you vanquished an enemy – it was best to take a piece of them inside you as conquest.”

”Somewhat barbaric – I pressed him on it; was cannibalism common to his folk? He told me: no. Further – he said – if you recall – only actions against an enemy who has honorable. For example – a heroic enemy may have the heart of a hero; if you consumed the heart, you too may have that hero's heart in you for a while – a wise enemy would have the brains of great wisdom; could consuming his brains make you wiser? Gragkh seemed to think so; among other organs..." she adds with look of disgust crinkling her nose.

”But in any case - what did this clue tell me? Why of course – what you already know, of course. Simply put, all dragons posses – in their blood – the natural power of magic. Furthermore – all metalic dragons – such as myself – posses in their blood the element of Good.”

”Therefore, if an honorable enemy; or at least – a chosen person would taste my blood; what would it avail them? I feel it would give them a strength in their being – yes; for a time – but as you know, what you put in your belly is not going to stay there forever.”

”Even so – this wracked me with various other issues and conundrums. If not your belly; how could you receive my blood? Between two females, proper mating is not a formal option. Well then - if not through mating, how could we join? Further – if either of those things happened; that is, you drank my blood or somehow managed to change your gender to mate with me, or I you – what would happen next?”

”Well – of course; I considered the points in order of importance.”

”If you were to take my blood into you somehow – what would that avail you? Certainly the power of my magic would work in your body – but to what end? Would you grow scales and a forked tongue?” she asks with a grin.

”Hardly, I should think – unless it was more blood then you could stomach – perhaps half of your blood like my own. If you were to somehow manage to slay me – for example – and ingest my blood or organs – then yes; I could see you taking on a distinct draconic set of features. But since mortal battle with me would not please either of us, nor do I believe you would be pleased with the results of being turned into an almost “dragon lady” – what is the other option?”

”Well – again, thinking on it, I came to another conclusion. What would a small amount of blood do? Well – if my theory is correct; you would feel the blood inspire the magical elements in your blood to great heights. You would feel a larger inspiration of those parts of yourself that are bonded to your celestial ancestors become inflamed – and why not? After all – it would be like giving a proper fertilizer to a little plant that needed love.”

”Your Celestial Bloodline is strong enough for you to have such powers – but more than that? What if you were to take that blood within your body; and invest in it a magical catalyst – spawned by a goodly and nobly made creature; with a good alignment by its bloodline, and one that is magical besides – what do you suppose that would do to your own blood?”

”Why – I should think the answer would be obvious! I think that it would inspire your blood to new heights – I feel that it would encourage your blood’s natural angelic tendencies – perhaps somewhat dormant – to awaken themselves into something bolder and more powerful.”

You notice that she has carefully arranged all the notes in a specific order on the table.

Lencher’s journal mentioned first – then the discovery of mutated blood and its drawbacks and potentials – the possibility that a mixture could provide new “supersoldiers”, a failure as the proper mixture couldn’t be found – the discovery of Anuk-su herself, who would be experimented on for that very purpose – Anuk-su’s guardians mentioning the fact that dragons and humans can mate; as well as the notes you read on the subject when you examined the “Draconic War Manual” – the knowledge the Metalic, especially Silver Dragons, where made most in the likeness of their god Apsu, the co-creator of dragons, and behaved most like him; a goodly, almost godlike servant filled with magical being in their very blood – the offhand comments made by Gragkh about how consuming the blood of an honorable foe is “good luck” and that taking the right parts of an enemy inside of yourself will encourage your own parts; such as the heart of brave enemy enflaming your courage; or the brains inflaming your wisdom; and through corollary; why not the blood inflaming your blood – the fact that your own bloodline has untapped potential, that may be awakened with the right magic; which you have not had a time to learn, and could take you years besides – and the sudden knowledge that if draconic blood was inside your system somehow, it’s natural propensity to magical power, coupled with (luckily) Anuk-su’s noble bloodline, made apparent with the constant unusual reminders from devotees to Apsu….

She looks up at you with a wide smile.

”Yes – well; as you can see; if you take the time to write things down and arrange them, well – I should think any mystery or riddle seems very easy, once you see the answer; but it is the getting there which is the challenge! Though, I recall that Mister Rowan suggested that it is also part of the “fun”… who knows, perhaps he may be right!”

She steeples her fingers and purses her lips.

”Now, if there was only some way we could be more then adopted sisters – if there was only some way we could be real sisters – of the same blood… But; how could that happen? That is the difficulty…” she ends, musing to herself, and takes a cup of herbal tea to sip, her young face pondering this question, as Dior looks to you for options.

A letter:

As you sit there thinking - a sudden knock on the door startles all three of you.

There - standing boldly and well groomed besides - is Anaitis nes-Ma'at. She is holding a letter - bows, and hands it you. Then - she is gone!

Looking at the letter, Anuk-su snatches it up, glances at it; and tosses it back to you.

"It does seem official, sister. I believe it is from the Holbyt lad. Even so, why must he insist on all the melodrama - and why he cannot simply come to the point - I do not know."

And then...

Inside the letter:

From the Desk of Director Rowan:

Well, lass – that pretty much wraps up this mystery in a bow. The only question you have to answer now is; how could you have draconic blood in your blood that was both: good draconic blood – as well as introduced into your blood without drinking it, or mating?

It’s tough one, I’ll grant you – and a real shame you couldn’t be sisters with the lass. Of course – I’ve heard of some lads who want to be like real brothers; sometimes they take their own steps – and it doesn’t involve drinking blood or mating… Sadly, I forgot how they do it – perhaps you’ll figure it out, though. What am I saying – I KNOW you will!

I also got a hunch that if – and when you do – that you’ll find out you have untapped powers that her blood can awaken. Oh well – only the gods will know! But, luckily, you had the clues to help you in this mystery. All you need to do is take the final step!

Bartleby Brett Rowan
