Hard to say - more on that to come, though...
FYI - I'm starting to get into the rhythm of Galen's personality, and a good analogy I would think is the kid "Pyro" that was introduced into X-Men 2; but, you'd have to combine him with a lot of book smarts, a bit of tension/condescending attitude for "ignorant people", and a lot of personal insecurity for being a weak kid that can get his butt kicked - kind of like Sheldon - from The Big Bang Theory.
If you've seen either of those two characters - preferably both - put them both together, make the kid roughly 14 with no worldly experience to guide him, and you've pretty much got your boy.
I'm sure his eyes got wide as dinner plates when I cast fireball. ;-)

"Let's go to the South-East first. Slay that one, and see what sort of valuables he is holding, as not to allow him to escape with his loot, and then continue on to the rider who went straight south. Hopefully the others can meet with us then so we can maintain superior numbers."
Garith hopes to appeal to Khromm's sense of thoroughness, in that letting any escape lessens how much gear and goods they can collect.
After about five minutes of hard riding you see a man on the horizon riding toward the south - you know from experience that soon we will be running into forest - then, after the forest - he will run into the river, provided he continues in that direction.
However - if he gets into the forest - he will be more difficult to track then the open plains.
He is about 200 yards in front of you now - what is your move?

"Khromm, Do you have a way to attack from range?" Garith asks as they pursue the rider.
Which one is it? Is he robed or armored.

Khromm doesn't answer - but swings out his composite longbow - kicking his horse to a faster gallop.
You're not sure who - the man is 600 feet from you - which is +1 penalty every 10 feet - that is +60 to your difficulty to see who he is - however, you are free to toss up a perception roll as you like... The horses were another matter. She would have to carefully approach them and gather them on her own as the others were presently occupied with other matters. She had never undertaken such a thing before but she was at least calm around horses. She knew enough not to spook them into running.

Handle Animal -
1. You gather the horses fairly easily - though it takes about five minutes to round them up - as they are all over the valley - but they come to you; sensing your quiet ability with them...
Appraise -
2. You are certain of one thing - the wine is probably made of a fermented date - not really "wine" - certainly potent, but you have no idea on the value of it - you suspect it would be very expensive - mainly because such a wine is very exotic - but how much it would cost in these regions? You have no idea...
Spellcraft -
3. Typically you can assess the magical value of an item with a spellcraft roll, if you are able to examine the item. However - you see no magical items of note... and so you cannot use the skill at this time.

You advance slowly - with a knowledge of what is about to happen, you easily avoid the first trap.
You recall being here before several weeks ago - there was compressed sand in small vents - only the "sand" wasn't sand. Your knowledge of healing and Alchemy reminds you it was more a cursed biological agent... A dust, if breathed in, would curse the person who breathed it with - as the Osirions would call it - Mummy Rot.
Nevertheless - you advance slowly down the tunnel, looking on the ground you see what looks like quite an obvious wire trap six inches off the ground, which you could naturally hop over and disarm - however - your excellent abilities of Perception was keenly attuned to your surroundings!
This tripwire is a fake. You examine it, and notice that, if you move in closely - that the stone about 1 foot beyond the wire is the real trap! If you had hopped over the wire, or if you had moved closely to "Disarm" the wire trap, you would have likely moved onto the stone beyond it.
This stone is part of a recently constructed trap - there is a very faint glyph on it - and suspect the trap may be magical... If you try to cross over the glyph - it is likely that you may set off the trap.
You are free to disarm it - if you know how - or attempt to you use magic to disarm it somehow...
It occurs to you that with the addition of these traps - that beyond them - around the corner and down the stairs - the room where you found the other magical gear in is probably filled with something. What it is, you don't know - but you have high hopes!
...provided you can get back this trap...

You seem very confused at what you find via the resin...
It does not look like any type of poison you have ever seen before. In fact, it does not look like poison... or seem like poison... still...
The chemical, as you examine it closely, inhaling it slightly - you feel your nostrils widen, a shudder goes through you - your heart begins to throb a bit, and you let out a hot gasp of air...
The feeling quickly passes - and you can still feel your heart throb, but only a moment.
Hmm... no negative effects that you can seem manifest themselves in you - only what you already endured... This will bear examining; but it is likely that you will need to have access to a full alchemical lab and time to study before you can find out more...
It should be noted, that you did not taste, ingest or inject the resin into yourself. For now - the resin is intact...

Galen stands politely by you, waiting until you finish speaking to Kae. When you are done and Kae moves to check - he whispers something softly to you in Ignan -
To even hear Galen speak, as he is waiting before people are removed from him - I will need a Perception roll; and of course, even if you can hear him - you still need to speak the language.

You failed to disarm the magical trap - but just barely! That is - if you fail the trap by 4 or less, you can re-try - and your DC was 28.
This process took you 2d4 rounds to attempt -
2d4 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6
I should add - without thieves tools - you normally add a +10 to the DC - you don't have those tools - but I am not clear if you need them specifically to disarm a magical trap... So, for now - don't worry about the tools in this case.
As for what Galen says? You cannot hear him - or at least - barely... However, as you cannot speak Ignan - you only hear him muttering to Shaezon in a foreign tongue.

Arasmes – answering Isani
Arasmes pulls on his lip a moment, considering your words.
”Lady, in my own lands I have witnessed several types of funerary procedures. To the east, in Katapesh – men of noble birth would be embalmed in chemicals which would preserve their bodies for the afterlife. In Osirion – where you hail, I have heard that men do bury their dead in stone tombs – some mighty in the extreme, if they are powerful and wealthy to afford such monuments – and others a mere hovel in the rock, carved in stone and buried in it; to be untouched by foul things.”
”They say that in some lands others are buried within the dirt and earth, so their flesh may yet become one with it – but, if you shall permit me – I have heard of another method of delivering the bodies to the afterlife – noted in the south near heavy waters where plague is high and leaving bodies so close to earth could produce disease.”
”I speak of burning the bodies – for it is often believed that the ash and smoke of those dead shall rise, symbolically, perhaps – to the heavens above, where the gods take the souls into their embrace.”
”I do not know if this is the case, but it seems to me that a creature that uses fire would best suited in such a passing; and – if such funerary proceedings were conducted – it seems likely that the bodies would not be able to be… animated? I have no desire to face walking dead, if I can help it,” he adds.
”Perhaps we may coordinate our efforts together? Your words do seem fit, and we have little time for tombs – and this ground is hard clay, and would be difficult to dig, even if we had brought trowels. Yet, if we wrap them in their bedrolls, douse them in some cooking oil – and ignite them – I think that would be safest, and quickest – and it may perhaps please your goddess, as she delights in flame? Even so – the words you mentioned – they would be well received, I would deem – no matter what method the dead were dispatched. I shall offer what aid I can in prayer – though I confess, after years of slavery – with only magic to aid me in my escape, well – I do not look overly much to the gods for support,” he adds with a sheepish grin.
Clearly Arasmes is willing to aid you in whatever you recommend – but as speed is best – and walking dead problematic – he believes that burning the bodies during the words is better then burial. This seems to be a good plan – but you would know that it would create a lot of smoke – which could be good or bad. Still – the choice is yours… He will support you in whatever plan you suggest.

Regarding the trap…
Kae you magnificent basterd – curse your natural 20! Nevertheless… I will add now that if you beat the DC – in this case 23 – by more then 10 you can disable the trap so you and your friends pass over it – even as the trap is still armed. I shall allow you to do this with your natural 20 – if you elect. But in either case – you discover the trap is a magical glyph – anyone that is Alive (i.e. undead do not trigger it), Medium Sized or larger (rats or bugs don't matter, either) that steps over the glyph will trigger the trap. It shoots a burst of acid on the creature – which lasts for 3 rounds. Round 1 does 3d10 Acid Damage, round 2 does 2d10 and round 3 does 1d10. There are no saves for the acid – if it gets on you – and all gear you are carrying – magical or otherwise – is effected by the damage. This effects all creatures that are standing in the 10x10 square. If your weapon, armor, or gear HP is bested by the acid – it is destroyed. Anyhow – you are free to pass by – just let me know ret-con if you leave the trap armed, or not.
Advancing down the somewhat familiar tunnel, you Shaezon, and Galen proceed until you reach the bottom of the stairs and come to the wide square room.
You see at once that it is has been altered with since you were here last. The basic furniture remains – but you discover sacks of grain (8 sacks – 20 lbs each – 8 ounces of grain equals one meal, though it is bland). You also discover 4 casks of lamp oil (each cask has 4 gallons – 596 ounces all told). Two lamps are there, unlit – and several scrolls and a ledger. You discover also two chests. One of them is about 60 lbs. – it is 3 feet wide, 4 feet long and 3 feet in height. The other chest is about 20 lbs. It is roughly 1 foot tall, by 1 foot wide, and is about 9 inches in height.
Both chests are locked.
There are places to set up bedrolls, and some low cots – but other then the grain, the oil, the two chests; there is nothing but the scrolls and ledger.
Kae and Shaezon – what do you do at this time?

Khromm |
Garith and his knights charge the rider as soon as they can.
"Khromm, If you can stop his horse, we shall be able to catch the man! Unless you think you can drop him more easily." As a cavalier, Garith suspects that hamstringing the horse may be easier than scoring a lucky deadly shot at an armored foe. Sneak attack? Then the riders skewer the desert man!
You want attack roles? wait till Khromm takes his shot? see if he hits the guy, drops the horse, The guys attack as soon as they are in range. Should remember to equip them with crossbows when we get back...
Khromm says nothing to you at this time, but unslings his bow and is prepared to take a shot at the horse. Regrettably – he is at a -8 penalty to shoot – as he is shooting from horse back – and the enemy is somewhat far away – giving him another penalty to hit.
Khromm kicks his horse forward a bit faster – and the horse is now moved a little closer – the enemy now being about 400 feet ahead, rather then 600. His horse is panting heavily – not used to such effort – Khromm aims and takes his shot against the horse – this puts him at another -8, for a total of -16 to hit.
The horse does not have armor – nor does it have AC bonus, as Garith pointed out – the horse is currently unaware of an attack – so it does not get its AC bonus; and, of course – Khromm does get his sneak attack bonus.
Let’s see what happens –
First - Khromm must make a general ride check to see if he can shoot from Horse back -
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Khromm's attack Roll -
1d20 ⇒ 17 -6: It seems that the game does not allow you to make "minus's" to the roll. That said - whatever is rolled - subtract 6 from it. "Flat Footed" War Horses have an AC of 11.
IF he hits –
1d8 + 8 + 2d6 ⇒ (3) + 8 + (5, 5) = 21
Khromm's advantages come because he is going to try to "push" his horses forward - Note - this is a house rule - normally, when two parties engage in a foot race - it is impossible to ever beat or catch a party - as you have the exact same speed. For such races - the House Rule is that each round the party shall roll a Dexterity check of 15. For every point the player beats a 15 - they add +1 foot to their TOTAL speed that round. For every -1 the player subtracts one foot from their TOTAL speed - in other words - this bonus is calculated after all multipliers for speed have been factored in).
Horse's Dexterity Check for advancing faster...
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15 - the horse is now "technically" 2 feet farther ahead then it was -
Meanwhile his efforts to run his horse hard shall cause the beast to be come "Winded" in 3d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 1) = 12 rounds.
FYI - yes, I am playing this buy the seat of my pants - but, until I have a better system for doing a race - this is how I'm doing it. We can toss up ideas on the discussion thread soon, though.
Dain GM |
Okay... Regarding horse/rider
The horse is shot in a good spot, apparently - and the rider pitches forward hard off the beast, tumbling into the air as the horse goes down!
The rider must make an Acrobatics roll - or suffer 1d6 falling damage -
Acrobatics roll -
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
If he fails -
1d6 ⇒ 5 damage
The horse has hit the ground - you are currently 400 feet away - at x5 move speed you shall get there in less then 2 rounds - however, this round you have all acted!
Round 2 - roll Initiative -
Enemy Rider -
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Khromm -
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Waiting on Garith and his men - When I get that - I'll know more. Remember - at the top of the round you are going to be 400 feet from him. At the start of round 2 - if you push your horses in a charge right at the rider - you will be 150 feet from him - round 3 puts you in range of melee weapons...

Shaezon examines the scrolls to determine magical nature (detect magic) and simply if they will be useful.
Perception 1d20+8
Neither the scrolls, the ledger, nor the chests seem to be magical.
Flipping through the scrolls you can see that they seem to be a listing of names and information - business records, perhaps? You are not sure - all of the written language is in Osirion - you at least recognize it by now - though you cannot read it.
You seem what looks like a listing of words, then numbers - moving across the sheets.... Several of the words repeat, and the numbers vary; a second listing of numbers follow the first.
If you had to guess - you'd think the first column is a list of names - the second column is another list of names - possibly person X dealing with person Y? The third column has a listing of words with a number by it - possibly it may be "X - 1 pound" - or something like that - the final column looks like simple numbers.
Again - this is mere inference - but you would suspect that the column's MAY indicate - (hypothetically) -
Seller ------ Buyer -------- Item --------------------------- Profit Earned
Person X -- Person X --- Random Item, 2 ounces ---- 10 gold pieces
Again - this is mere speculation - you believe if Isani - or someone who could read Osirion - was able to examine the scrolls, they could learn more.
Meanwhile, you quickly thumb through the ledger.
It looks more like a journal then a book of numbers and data - the writing seems like Osirion in nature (i.e. Alphabet) - but the words don't look right. It's almost as if someone constructed a code using Osirion as the base language - whatever it is - it is detailed, and there are various entries which are dated - the dates corresponding with what you believe to be the Osirion calender - but of course, you are not sure...
One thing is clear - there are various sketched maps in the ledger... You recognize at least one of them as you glance through - it has a fairly accurate depiction of your township and the outlying lands!
"Master - what did you find?" Galen asks, his eyes taking in the scrolls eagerly.
Okay - FYI - yeah - between the Mummy Rot trap and the Acid Trap I really kind of figured you people wouldn't find this stuff until much later. However - you found it, so... Yeah... grr... Meanwhile - whatever you discover in the pages - go ahead and thank Kae for his natural 20! For more detail, though - you will probably need Isani - or at least someone who can read/write Osirion.

1d20+1Garith and his men charge at full speed, and next round they'll charge! they should be in range for that, right?
unless the guy does something particularly interesting that changes my mind.
So - basically -
1. Garith's men move forward 250 feet - they are now 150 feet out
2. Garith move's forward 250 feet - now 150 feet out
3. Khromm moves forward and tries to push his horse for faster speed - 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 - and is now 245 feet (his horse faltered) - and is now 155 feet out!
At this time Khromm is using Ride to fire again - at this range he is only at a -2 penalty - so, basically a 1d20, then subtract 2 from the roll -
Ride
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
His attack -
1d20 ⇒ 3 - Subtract 2 from this total
IF he hits -
1d8 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Next - the rider is going to take his initiative to drop behind his own horse for 9/10 cover as a free action.
The horse is a large creature, so to strike him, you will need to ride around the horse first...
He is drawing his own bow as a move action and firing at the closest NPC (since they moved faster then Garith) -
Attack 1
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
IF he hits -
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Yikes! Rolls to confirm -
Confirm to Critical -
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
If he hits it is x3 damage - which means he did 15 damage to NPC 1.
Attack 2
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
IF he hits
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Okay - NPC 1 is shot from his horse and just went down. NPC 2 is riding hard with Garith - and Khromm missed his damn shot! Top of the round - Kae, you won't be able to charge him formally, as he is laying behind his horse for cover - but you can still order your man to try to move around to flank - as a double move - and get their next round. Or - if you have a lance - you can have one of your men charge him with the lance, if he is right in front of the enemy - but only one guy can charge him now - as the horse is blocking another attack.

We need some way to get the Items out of this cave and transport them back to Saravale. Last time we were here there was a particular dangerous trap on the chests.

Mister was also chasing the men on horseback. I believe it's the same one Garith is after. Though he is traveling at the same speed as the horses he is flying and can move in straight lines. Mister would be keeping an eye on the quarry and making sure gareths men can see him even if they cannot see the target.
Perception if needed 1d20+6
How can Mister be sure the others can see him? I he casting a spell to do so, or just flying casually? ;)
Seriously, though - I am kind of curious to know if you are using magic to highlight yourself, or if you have a special plan...

Odd - you don't see any traps. Now - if you had rolled a natural 20 - maybe...

Shaezon closes the book and gathers the scrolls etc together and puts them in his pack.
DM- What would be the most useful title so you will know what this is on my character sheet? Osirion ledgers and calendar?
Ledger and Osirion Scrolls will work. Depending on what you do with it - you may find the translation very quick.
You planning on doing anything else in the cave right now?
Just exploring the cave and looking for secret doors/compartments.

Bit confused here - I saw this posted twice - the first time you had a 16 posted for Perception, now you have a natural 20 posted - hence my joke about the "natural 20". When I looked again - I only saw one posting - the one with the 16 disappeared.
Very odd... One was posted a minute ago, the second posting 14 seconds ago - I looked again, and then I saw that one with the 16 was missing, but the one with the natural 20 was still there...
In any case, you do not find any traps.

Of course - you can easily take 20 to search for traps or secrets at this time, as you have no distractions. It will take a bit of time - but you find no secret compartments, only the chests and gear I already mentioned.

He's in the air where they can see him. Mister, the good guys, and the bad guys positions form a triangle. I suppose I can't be "sure" but I'm not hiding or anything. I'm a flying lizard with a long tail and a long neck. Not a particularly difficult silhouette to pick out if you're looking for it.
Regardless though, I'm still following the guy from the air.

It was weird, I was trying to post with my computer, but i wasn't getting a responce, so i just used my pnone.
After the post from my phone loaded, both were up there, and my computer hadn't loaded the page.So after the page loaded properly on my phone I deleted the first post that came through, prolly from my computer.
Ive been working through some internet issues. it's usually not a problem, but sometimes pages don't load properly.

No worries - point is - you aren't using a spell - so the guys can see you if they know to look up. Sounds good.

It's alright - this kind of things happen from time to time.
You find no traps on either of the chests, as I said. They are heavy to move, rather clunky - but you can do it. The same can be said for the food and oil, if you want it. But it's pretty mundane stuff.
Meanwhile - internet issues can be annoying indeed. I hope everything works out on that front, and am eager to see if Garith can bring this guy down.

What does the enemy rider do after Garith and his men approach after Khromm drops the horse?
Not sure if you saw this earlier, however - this all comes from an earlier post - just copied it in again for ease of reading.
On the riders turn he -
Next - the rider is going to take his initiative to drop behind his own horse for 9/10 cover as a free action.

It is now formally the top of the round.

Ah, thanks.
Since they have lances, the first Rides around, having his horse double move to make a flank, and get into AoO range if the archer tries to shoot him.
Then Garith charges
Ride check to guide wiht knees
1d20 - 4 ⇒ (17) - 4 = 13
Attack roll with flanking, charge, etc
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
for: 2d8 + 6 ⇒ (6, 8) + 6 = 20
Can the soldier take a strike after his horse makes a double move?

for: 2d8+6Can the soldier take a strike after his horse makes a double move?
You wont' be able to do the double move - or flank - because double move is 2x base speed, in this case 100 feet, and the archer is 150 feet away.
What you can do is have Garith charge the rider - who is behind cover with his bow - and hit him with his lance, which has reach.
That I will do now - keeping your rolls, but without flanking bonuses...
Garith can see the guy is a little beat up (he did take falling damage when the horse was shot out from under him).
Meanwhile - you can have the other rider move around Garith - skip his attack action, so he can actually ride around the guy from the back and hit him next round - at a full charge with flanking from Garith.
But they don't have enough movement to do both this round...
Your total roll was not enough to hit this guy, as his normal AC is higher then 14. Next round you should be able to get him, though, and with your buddy charging up - he'll have flank.
Meanwhile - don't forget the main thread. As soon as you guys finish these jokers and grab the gear - you're pretty much done.
Dain GM |
Khromm is riding up to the man behind the horse. He is not shooting, but moving about 150 feet up (roughly) - the jumping off his horse onto the ground (acrobatics check to avoid damage).
Acrobatics Check -
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
IF he fails
1d6 ⇒ 2
Khromm then hops up and pulls his swords as a free action (quick draw).
His move is over, but he is now 5 feet from the guy.
(To clarify - Garith is 10 feet north of the guy - with his lance. Khromm is now adjacent to the guy - to his west - and your boy is riding hard up from the south - and will be able to flank the guy from the guy from the south on his next move).
The enemy snarls at Khromm and drops his bow as a free action, pulls his scimitar as a move action - and attacks Khromm - who is adjacent to him with his attack action.
Attack -
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
IF he hits -
1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
[b]Round over - it's your boy's move to charge from the south - your NPC can do a full charge from the south, and gain flanking with Garith.
After your NPC is Garith - then Khromm, then the bad guy!
Dain GM |
Garith moves to attack, and the other rider runs around the enemy so he can flank next round and uses his standard action to raise his shield. +4 to AC
I know - Garith missed already - it is now round 3, Garith can make his normal attack - the man is no longer in cover as he is sparring with Khromm - but before anyone can go - your NPC can attack with charge AND flank from the south.
Then Garith goes with flanking
Then Khromm
Then the bad guy - if he is still alive

Hey everyone. Sorry I havent been on. Wife went into emergency surgery to have her gall bladder removed on friday. She's fine but I'm still taking care of her so I may be unable to post for a couple days. Thank you for NPCing me in the meantime and thank you for understanding. :-)
Wishing her a speedy recovery
