I do not want to hurt our efforts but I think your time is very wrong. It should take 3 men a full day to make one pit trap. That is moving 1,000 cubic feet of very wet earth. We are talking 15LB a foot so we have about 7.5 tons of earth to move. I think we can do very small pit traps like a leg trap but nothing on the full 10x10x10 size.

The full trap rules are here down the page.

now that I think about it a lot more I think it would be much more than that. one gallon of water is 8lbs so we are more like 25lb a foot. so about 12.5 tons of earth, and we need to move the stuff so they cannot see it.

We could make a mud bog trap thought.

This is why fabricate is the best spell ever

The head of Tim slumps forward suddenly, his eyes glaze over in a dull lusterless look. He answers your questions flatly, as if the answers are wrenched out of him. But you have no doubt he is being sincere.

"I am Timmothy Nailer, son of Svyen and Korwyn Nailer. I am 17 years old. I have killed, and done murder. I have robbed and done arson. I am an oathbreaker and highwayman. The man who comes is one called Happs. He is a highwayman, a murder, rapist, killer, arsonist, slaver, and narcotics trafficker. I do not know his full and true name. I know only his alias, which I have given. He has taken with him 30 men. He has taken with him 30 men. Of them there are 3; one of them is dead and burried. The other is so named Robert "The Drake" Tyrrel, late of the House Tyrrel. He and the man called Timmothy Nailer, myself, were sent as scouts to see if there were any on the road that so carried the charter."

His eyelids are fluttering, and drool is running down his chin.

"I do not know how many are back at the basecamp, for I do not know who is there now. I know of other basecamps, but have visited none. The camp I was at was run by Haps. There are at any time between ten men to fifty; mounted in general. I do not know how many there are at basecamp for I do not know who is there now. I know of other basecamps, but have visited none."

He seems to be answering your questions two times, as ordered. Meanwhile, his head is jerking in twitches, and his skin is milk white, colorless.

"There are many miles between here and north Brevoy; enough for a man like Tim Nailer to escape if he was not watched, and in civilization far from here. If you proved true, I would have shown you the lair I knew and been seen as a hero. There are many miles between here and north Brevoy; enough for a man like Tim Nailer to escape if he was not watched, and in civilization far from here. If you've proved false, I would have fled. If you were false, I would have fled."

Blood is dribbling in thick streams from his nostrils, and oozes down in red streaks over his lip, even as blood oozes from his eyes, and his ears.

"I have obeyed. I have obeyed."he says flatly and emotionally, looking up at Alaric, then collapses off the chair, his head smashing on the ground; his head cracking on the ground.

"Well, O Man? Do you taste even a morsel of the power that may be thine, if thy will excert thy will? Is it enough for thee, or would thy have more?"

"By the gods!" I cry out with horror. "What did you do that wretch?

I hury over to the scum on the ground. He is, surprisingly, still alive. But I doubt he will ever see, hear, or taste anything again. I look up to Alaric with shock and awe at what I have seen.

"A noose would have been cleaner, lad. But at least he lives, for now." I add.

I wipe my face, the sweat on it clammy at what I've just seen.

"I don't know about anyone else, but I think I need a drop of tea. Anyone else want a nip?I ask as I walk back to the kitchen, avoiding the faces of Oleg and Svetlana.

Gideon is still outside working with Smendor and has no idea what's transpired in the house.

Well, the trap thing is going to be trick for lots of variables. Why don't you just tell me what you want to do, specifically (as in, give me your plans), and I'll tell you how long it will take to do, and how much you have done when (and if) the bandits arrive. Just let me know what your plans are and I'll tell you what's what and how long.

This WAS outside, specifically right in front of the covered fire pit, right in front of A2, right across from the front door of the house. Everyone doing the interogation was sitting there. If you were outside, you would have been in distance to hear everything, even besides Brett's comment.

Tabak bursts in the door to the common room. "Little one, you must come see this." Leto asks no questions, grabbing his journal in one swift move and coming out the door after the giant. "Alaric!" The boy says, shocked by the scene. "Bandit or no, the man is a human being. I will not be a party to this!" His eyes are a dark sea with flashes like lightning. His rage is palpable. "I understood the need for information, but torture is not the appropriate method. Tabak, end this." He makes a commanding motion, and Tabak steps forward, drawing his huge blade from his back, obviously meaning to carry out an execution by the sword, and end the mans suffering.

I thought it would be polite to allow a chance to stop it. If no one does within the next couple hours, poor Tim is dead.

"Drake" has been hustled out of the house. He seems completely calm and cool at the sudden downshift (as in, one minute he's inside eating breakfest, the next minute he's being taken forcibly outside to 'cooberate' a story.

When he sees Tim lying crumpled on the ground, his eye grow wide for a moment, then narrow sternly, as if (for a moment) he was surprised, but not anymore. That some second guess has been suddenly confirmed.

"So," he says flatly "I guess breakfest has to wait."

Male Dwarf Shielded Fighter

Due to the drastic escalation in the yelling coming from the table/fire pit area Smendor does make his way in that direction. Smendor is in shock of what he sees before him.

He walks right up to Alaric Winter. Smendor is yelling with a lot of anger.

You will never have my trust you scum sucking meat sack. It seems you are on the wrong side of the fight here!!!

Smendor puts a large wet hard working ball of dwarf nasal mucus and spit right into Alaric’s face.

Gideon stops his work to come up to the bandit that was being interrogated, Casts a minor spell (detect magic), and begins to concentrate on Tim.

Detect magic plus Spellcraft to see what magic could have caused this effect on Tim the bandit. 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

I did not kill him. I merely cast a spell that required the truth. It is not a fatal spell but it does cause much pain if you decide to try and lie. He fought against it and this is the result. If he had been honest, no harm would have come to him at all. He wipes the spit from his face and says and again I would thank you to not jump to conclusions about that which you have no bloody idea. At this point his eyes roll into the back of his head and he collapses to the ground.

You detect no residual form of magic... an odd thing. You expected something, but find nothing; as a void.

That's odd. This man has obviously been affected by magic and yet none shows. It's strange. LIke the magic has been blocked somehow.

Hey Gideon are you saying that out loud, or out of character? Just a bit confused here...

Ariarh says nothing, but crouches down and casts "Stablizize" on the bleeding Tim, and moves over to Alaric to check to see what is going on with Alaric and looks up sternly at Smendor.

"Move your knee good Smendor, I shall not have violence met with violence; it heals nothing," she says coldly even as Dior hops up on Alaric's chest and hisses harshly at anyone who refuses to listen to what she says, or stands as a threat to her.

Also, it is an odd thing, Gideon, though the wounds of Tim are magically healed, you sense no residual colors that should indicate the spell Ariarh cast. In other words, she cast a spell, but it too seems to be blank, or in a "Void".

Meanwhile, Drake stands watching, confused by everyone's behaviour, but says nothing, taking it all in and considering things.

After a moment of tending, Alaric comes to with a fierce Griffon on his chest staring up at an angry dwarf.

Blue is Out Of Character

This method has worked well in other games, but it has to be uniformly used to be effective.

While your formatting style is correct in color and bold, yes... when you have your character "speaks", using quotations makes it easier for this poor English major to understand... :)

Fair enough. I'll do that from now on.

Guideon says,
"That's odd. This man has obviously been affected by magic and yet none shows. It's strange. LIke the magic has been blocked somehow. Even when you cast your healing magics the wounds closed, but where the residual magic should have shown it is void. It's quite odd. "

"So you're a torturous bastard, good for you." Leto says angrily as Tabak removes the bandit's head. "Oleg, if I might borrow some of your rope?" As he takes some Leto helps Smemdor tie the unconscious sorcerer's arms, making sure to bind his fingers to prevent spellcasting. "Tabak, clean up this mess." Leto says, tying off the last knot. To think I had liked this man. I thought perhaps we were of the same cloth, though we had our differences. I guess not all bastards grew up as well adjusted as I. "Could someone fill me in on what he said. While I may not agree with the way it was obtained, information is invaluable in and of itself." The young half-elf takes a second to check on Gideon's claim, seeing the same result. "No magic, yet he had that effect. Any of you heard of that sort of thing before?" He looked over the others, obviously having a bit more wariness after this fiasco.

Poor Alaric, don't worry, you won't be lynched. Though it'll take you a damn long time to gain any trust from Leto again. And you may have to sit out this fight tied to a chair lol.

Male Dwarf Shielded Fighter

After the rope is in place Smendor gets up.

"I only know I left a boy who I could not just yet call a man who was being helped with a drink and a warm blanked that I dang sure know was not going to give use anything worth a darn in the way of information. Then I come back to him twitching in a pool of his own blood. “

Cleaning off his hands, “ unless he had a major head injury we did not know about someone was doing something I do not approve of, and this finger wiggler downright said he did something.

Looking off into the distance, “ we do not have time for this crap right now we need to get to work. Toss him in a hole somewhere for now.”

Smendor walks off to get his work done.

From the door of the bar, like grim death, comes Brett brandishing two pistols, hammer's cocked back.

"Stand down, all of you. Now!" he says coldly.

"Master Oleg, belay that order. Leave by your rope; I've a few words with these lovely lads and lasses," he adds icily.

If anyone flinches, he moves the barrel of a pistol toward that person with a swift ruthlessness that belies doubt in his ability to kill.

"Now, I'm going to be very clear here; the only one that did any killing in this yard has been the ghostly creature clinging to you! I add to the young summoner.

"And when did he make the killing stroke? It was just after the young lass healed him, and no doubt was prepared to heal him more, you order your creature to take his head? And all of this while a group of bandits is riding hotly to us, no doubt curious why their "advanced scouts" didn't report back to warn of danger, which would NO DOUBT make the comming bandits NERVOUS of danger. And you have the audacity to argue amongst each other?"

"Now, we have a host of scum riding down on us hard. And while you quibble over things, you've so far murdered a man in cold blood. Healing would have been better; they have priests that can cure things like that, or so I'VE been told," he adds with a touch of irony.

"But enough is enough! Here's what's going to happen. I'm going to be taking this spellslinger here,"I say gesturing to Alaric "and I'm going to also bring with us that there Elf," I add gesturing to the female on the tower.

I forestall any questions and plow on "I'm taking the spellslinger so I can keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't get murdered for casting spells which may or not be seen... and I'm taking the elf because we need someone with good eyes and a good hand at a range weapon to help me pick off any scum who I see out there. I want hard news, not the kind you get from bleeding it out of a fellow. You want to stay here and quibble about what have you, be my guest, but I wouldn't recommend it. In the meantime, why don't you have your hulking creature clean up the mess and bury the body of the man he murdered. Mister Oleg," I say turning to the keeper of the establishment "I'm terribly sorry about all the excitement. I had hoped we could act for the good of your outpost and the frontier... it seems my riding companions and I have some issues to sort out."I add the last flatly.

"No problem master Brett, no problem at all..."Oleg says shakily even as Brett holsters one of his pistols and jerks out a dirk from a hidden sheath at his back. The pistol still open in other hand at the ready, he cuts the bonds to Alaric, and jerks him up.

"Mount up, we can talk soon, but this isn't the time for it." he looks up at Tessara. "You comming too, or just planning on remaining in that watchtower? We need eyes, and ability."

Turning back to the others.

"Who know when we get back. But I'd clean up this hash soon. If I'm right we'll be riding back here about 20 minutes before the villains. Whatever plan you make, it should give us 20 minutes to get into motion; if not more. But be ready. Oh, one other thing, leave the gate open for us, if you don't mind,"he adds to Gideon and Ariarh, then pulling out his steed, he keeps his pistol he forces open the gate, and leads it through waiting a moment to see if Alaric and Tessara are comming.

I think the best move here would be a little time shift. We can go back just a few minutes to the point when you went bonkers and attacked a key NPC with an NPC and caused all this crap.

Response to Character Suggestions

Just to clearify a basic house rule, "Bleed rules" typically occur if a player is rendered unconcious (which I believe is standard). After which they lose one HP a round until negative Constitution (some players go negative 10, I use negative CON). In either case, I believe that Ariarh had more then enough time to Stablize the bleeding bandit who was going to be hanged anyway.

But in any case...

A NPC was assulted after a major Intimidate roll. The effect of this roll caused him to bleed and collapse to the ground, unconcious. No one tried to heal him, except for Ariarh/Suzy, who asked me to do that via a text message since she couldn't get the post to work right. But the point is, he was alive and stabilized.

Alaric had a similiar fit the night before when he passed out, after dealing with some powerful magical issue, not unlike this case also. Though people questioned him (Alaric) about it, there was room to manuever after the effects and try to do some social RP, there was some good lattitude to do that after the detect magic spell was cast.

Also, despite the fact that I said Alaric was already awake, he was treated as if he was unconcious and players attempted to tie him up despite the fact that he was awake and could move and may not have agreed to being tied up.

Next; even though Ariarh cast "Stabilize" on the wounded bandit, for some reason the Eidelon took the bandit's head; thereby killing him, even after he had been healed.

At this point I it seemed like a lot of details had been lost in translation in the last several posts so I stepped in to try to diffuse the situation using an NPC. This is not something I prefer doing, or like to do, but it seemed that so much information was ignored in the previous posts that it seemed like the fastest way to deal with the situation. As for the other NPC that effected Alaric's Intimidate roll, that is directly linked to his signature item, and has a point via Role Playing later.

Now, I am a relative novice to Play by Post games. I am not familiar with a style or protocol when someone posts a detail that is not read or actions are misread. So we can do this a couple of different ways: move on from here as, or ret-con it, and pretend nothing happened back since the time that Alaric did the Intimidate roll. Or some other method that someone else could suggest.

As for me, I'm for going on. There is too much information out there to re-do, in my opinion. But as we are all trying to have a good time, I am for going on and just rolling through, but I will bow the consensus of the group.

Well, that's my two cents.

Male Half-Elf Druid 1

I apologize, having missed the information where Ry healed the boy and Alaric awakened, I moved on under the previous assumption. That said, I feel that the only change would have been an issue between me and Ry. Leto is angry, as, to his eyes and his IC knowledge, Alaric just tortured a child with a spell. The child was already sentenced for death, and thus, to Leto, he was simply ending the child's suffering quickly. Healing the boy would have simply extended his suffering. That would not change in my actions. That said, retconning might be called for, since my character, Ry, Smemdor, and Alaric, likely have a bit more to work out, and I must say that if Brett is going to come to his aid we may end up with a dead or wounded Leto, because in this situation, with no explanation or motive, Alaric is a bad guy, as is anyone helping him. So yes, I recommend retcon. Just my two cents.

Okay, you guys have been busy and my apologies for not being able to join in today.

From all I have read, we've sensed (those who rolled a sense motive) that the young bandit Tim was not exactly telling the truth but not entirely lying either, which is a tricky situation. Alaric was (as discussed via Skype on Thursday night) playing the "bad cop" to Ariarh's "good cop" (as per threads she gave Tim a blanket and a shot of whiskey -- and was "mothering" him to get him to open up.) Since Alaric's spell had dire consequences on the boy (as he fought against speaking the complete truth), Ry stepped in the try and do what she could to the help him not die (and not because she knew a spell was cast but she is a healer and that is what she instinctively does when she feels it is the right thing to do). From what I've read so far, Tim has not been outrightly condemned to death by the group and Alaric and Ry were both giving him a chance to repent, be completely honest and possibly gain employment from Oleg and Svetlana to pay off his debt. So, as far as Ariarh was concerned, healing him was the right choice and did not believe she would be extending his suffering by doing so. Ry defended what was being done to Alaric (by Smendor) because she saw it as an ill-informed, rash move by the dwarf. The situation with Tabak decapitating the boy in belief (under order from Leto) that it was the right thing to do is just an inevitable consequence of strangers trying to work together but not knowing each other well enough to gauge each other's personalities and reactions. I think it would be better to call this a very unfortunate (and unintentional) mistake and one we hope won't occur again and move forward. Perhaps, we could have a brief conversation about what has occurred (that is, Leto, Ry, Smendor and Alaric can) but in my way of thinking it would be done simply to clear the air and call a "truce" and get down to the job at hand. These people don't know each other and it is within the realm of plausibility that such mistakes will likely occur. Ariarh is one for casting no blame at this time. Just my 2 cents. :)

I know a Skype session has been scheduled for 9pm EST (U.S.A time) on Sunday. During our first Skype session I said that I would be available on Sunday night (U.S.A time) but I had forgotten an appointment I have that I would like to keep as I booked it a month ago. So, at this stage, just giving a heads-up that I might not be around at that time. My apologies if that is the case.

*You said it more than one time the boy is very scared and more or less in a panicked state. He was in the middle of a break down and would have done just about anything to keep his head, so it was pointless to speak with him anymore. Smedor leaves after getting this information.

* There is a large escalation and Smendor comes back to see the boy setting on the ground with a major head wound not due to the spell, but to the fall, but there is no way for Smendor to know how he got the wound. He just knows there is a boy with a fractured skull twitching on the ground.

*Than a few others checked on the boy and said he is not dead but he will be a vestibule.

* Smendor apprehended the assumed attacker and neutralized his power to cast more spells, so Smendor can find out what has been going on.

* Than more than one person in the group concluded that Alaric was in the wrong.

* A person (Brett) Smendor has known for less than a few hours than stand there with a gun telling him he needs to release a criminal, and he will be back in 20 minutes.

* Well that is not going to work. Smendor will be attacking Brett with deadly force. Smendor does not have his armor on but he would have his ax and shield.

* Well that is not a good start to a game. we need to (A) not kill the boy that was due to a miss read. (B)Someone say in an audible voice I think the boy will be fine. (C)Brett must not point his weapon at Smendor and attempt to leave with a criminal.

As far as retconning, I am usually not a fan because part of the game is letting the story unfold naturally. Now, I doubt Smendor would have let me talk once I woke anyway in the state that he was in, as he said he didnt want me casting. So missing the wake up wasn't that big of a deal. I am perfectly fine playing this out but I kind of have a feeling this is a no win situation. I would rather continue and see what happens and if a new character is needed as a result of this, which it may, I have no idea whether Smendor or Leto will work with Alaric anymore no matter what explanation he gives. Either that or Alaric can fess up that it was the ring that did it. In which case, and he might do this anyway because he is fairly disgusted by the actions of the ring also, he will try to rid himself of the cursed and evil thing, therefore bye bye signature item lol. I am much preferable to the second option and if Alaric is allowed to talk then he will definitely "out" the ring the first opportunity he has.

People, like characters, have misunderstandings. My vote is to continue the story. Also, Gideon was concentrating on the wounded prisoner for detect magic reasons. If he realizes that someone thinks this person dead and he is not, Gideon will speak up and say he is alive. I got a little lost too, so I'm not sure which character thinks what at this point.

Alaric rubs his wrist and fingers once the ropes are off. Looking at Brett, Alaric says "Lower your weapon Brett. Smendor has every right to be angry. What was done to that boy is unforgivable!" He turns his gaze to Smendor and the others and says "But I did not do that to him. Look in my eyes and you will see the truth of my words. I was given this ring, he points to a plain circle of silver on his hand, which he yanks off, and continues, "by a man in a valley where I was traveling with my beloved. He immediately disappeared after giving it to me. I know I should have thrown it away but my curiosity got the best of me. I put it on for the first time yesterday when I passed out and should have taken it off then but I was able to fight it off and control it. In my hubris, I have caused this mess, not directly but by not taking it off yesterday. I now know it is an evil object and as such I will have no part of it. He then hurls the ring into the fire.

I'm hoping for a bit of license with everyone believing the story since it is true and therefore we can continue without any more issues.

So Gideon will note the boy is not dead and keep others from killing him. Alaric will cast off the evil item. Brett and Smendor will not have time to kill each other. I am good with that outcome.

On a different note I am going to change the game map so the wagon will be blocking the gate. We can leave it open until Brett comes back. Does anyone have an objection to this move.

I should add that Leto's decision to kill the boy was Leto's decision, and his alone. Unless he is planning on modifying things, that's the issue.

The only reason Brett came out with guns out is because

A. The Eidion decapitated the 17 year old bandit; (who has admitted to murder, arson, banditry, theft, and being a highwayman). And though "death by the sword" is a prescribed method of execution, it was after the boy admitted to wanting to help people. This action was not stayed by Leto so far.

B. A man lying on the ground has been spat on by a dwarf and threatened by the same dwarf. From Brett's perspective a brawl has turned ugly when someone had been murdered in cold blood. Brett doesn't mind people getting their heads knocked together, but cold blood killing is unnaceptable; and he was there to prevent Smendor from deciding to murder someone else, because (to him) that's exactly what it appears to have happened.

C. I should add that whatever opinion you have of Alaric's interogation methods, it got all necessary information out of the boy; including exact numbers and specific data on the riders.

D. Brett did not say he would be back in 20 minutes, he said he would be 20 minutes ahead of the bandits. Whenever or wherever he saw them, once he got back to the basecamp with you guys, you'd have 20 minutes from there.

No matter how this falls out Brett had planned on scouting again and see first hand what happened. He had hoped to bring others with him that could help. He may put up the question differently, depending on whether or not Leto killed the bandit (who would have no doubt been exectuted or healed and been made a good person eventually).

In either case, I need to hear from Leto and possibly Tessera on what her character thinks. Though, for convience, we can say she was in the tower not really privy to this, and therefore for HER does not need to ret-con anything.

Okay, need to go work, be back later.

Gideon looks confused by everyone's behavior. He steps back and watches everyone for signs of further mental instability.

I'm not sure what's happening thus Gideon is unsure.

I am fine with the retcon to right before the boy died, first post responding remains, second post is retconned.

Leto holds up a hand, staying Tabak. "I understand why you may worry, Smemdor, but the boy has been sentenced to die. I am simply ending his suffering." Leto's eyes, dark and stormy, turn to Alaric. "As for you, I have heard of cursed items, but I have also heard of some who would blame their crimes on magic. I will be watching you." His anger is palpable as he watches the ring burn.

"Do what you wish boy. I told you the truth. I have not a care whether you believe me or not. I have been watching ALL of you since I arrived and will continue to do so. We have no friends here. We have only just met and I would fully expect a bit of distrust. This has complicated things but that should not distract us from our goal, which is to rid the area of the bandit threat and explore this area for possible settlement. I am done with discussing this. As for him,I point to the boy. I hope you would have the same fire and passion if one of us was wronged. Now if we are quite done. I need a drink. Alaric looks at each of them in turn waiting to see if anyone has anything else to say. He is just as pissed off as they are and is not in a mood to be lectured further.

Brett is outside of the gate, as mentioned.

Now, I had written a rather long post, going over things, but I am not going to ret-con now. In the future, however, please realize 2 things.

1. Players who try, or attempt to try, to physically take action against other players (be it tie them up, cast a spell that can damage them, try to kill them, try to rob them, etc...) will have to make those rolls specifically when I am around to watch. I do not want inter-party fighting in this game. But if you insist on being someone who wants to assult other players, then you may do so ONLY with the caveat that I expect formal dice rolls, and formal rules of engagement, and I will not be happy.

2. The majority of this was meant to be an interesting social role-play converstation that would have helped Alaric discover more about the mysteries of his signature item; an item i spent a considerable ammount of personal time creating. ALL of that is moot, because when the posts came through, people did not read everything. As such, someone said "I shall put him out of his misery if he is not healed" when the boy was healed, what happened? The same person then killed him. Another person said they would tie someone up while they were unconcious. But the person was NOT unconcious but wide awake.

I understand there is a lot of reading to go over, and it can be tricky. But those are examples of pretty big issues that really hurt the game. A NPC was murdered because of misreading of what happened. A PC had to throw away his signature item because of "distrust". No one wanted to talk to him about it, just jerk weapons and go to work. Please read everything in the future.

As for now...

Brett has exited the walls, as I mentioned earlier, though he pauses to see if anyone follows. If there was any plan to block the gate with a wagon, he will not be able to re-enter easily. If this is intentional, please let me know. Brett is sitll going scouting, because, as he says "he wants the straigth word" on how many are out there.

Is anyone going to come with him? By the way, this is your last chance to gain some combat XP before the big fight on Sunday.

By the way, if the gate is blocked with the wagon, this will most certainly prevent anyone from entering with ease, including the bandits.

Okay, that's it. Please just remember to read all the posts/details before you make an action. If I'm still going to fast for you, let me know, I know there is a lot to catch up on.

Oh, by the way, for anyone interested, the ring seems to be completly uneffected by the campfire. As if mithril and gems did not burn very easily... Though they don't actually burn very easily normally, I just thought I'd point that out

Gideon will go with Brett to scout.

Said just before Brett leaves,

"I would join you if you'll have me. I have a keen set of eyes and my own horse. Further I wish to be no party to whatever is transpiring here. "
