Introduction

This is the Kingmaker Campaign, yet it is filled with many deviations from the boxed set. The "Campaign Information" page is meant as a quick resource to help sum up the thousands of posts quickly.

"Whoo Hoo!"Brettt calls out excitedly, again and again.

"There be GOLD in them there hills! Do you know what that means? Do you understand where that leaves us? Why lads, once this area be staked and claimed, by US of course, then we be twice as well off, for we now have ownership to a place where we can be mining some gold for our new land o' plenty!"

Treasure Divided

The following will be given to the players to choose from. The rest is kept by Kaid’s people, unless you (the players) demand it. Kaids people have claimed the food, the six horse hitched to the wagon, the huge tent, and the chest of coin. He is also taking the letter, and the silver Idol… the idol for reasons unknown, and the two healing kits.

35 GP

Smendor has taken with him four horses and one saddle (value of 75 each, for a total of 300 GP plus 10 for saddle).

Brett has taken one horse and one large tent value of 30 GP).

Every player has 1 Cure Light Potion value of 50 GP.

Ariarh has a shield of father potion 75 GP.

Alaric has Mage Armor for 65 GP.

You have recently picked up the following gear…
A masterwork dagger; the handle carved of an antler, - 302 GP
A wand of Burning Hands, seven charges
A silver ring (appraise for value) 100 GP
A pouch with some gold coins (217 GP, 345 SP, and 127 CP), there are also three jewels in it, (appraise, anyone). Jewel one ONYX: 40 GP, AMYTHEST: 50 GP, and TOPAZ: 75 GP.
Finally, a spellbook. Unfortunately, rain seeping down into the cache has damaged much of the spellbook, but five of the spells (identify, mage armor, reduce person, silent image, and unseen servant) remain intact.

I'll need help from everyone keeping track of this stuff. At least it'll all be in one place and It's one less thing the DM has to do.

Semndor's starts getting a little upset, "If anyone of you nut heads go back to Oleg's and starts talking about the fact we found gold I am going to walk on your face with these heavy boots." At this time Smendor's starts breathing very hard and gets a little wobbly in his saddle. He just leans forward and puts his face down for a while.

For the last few days every time he gets angry and his blood starts to boil he gets really dizzy.

Brett is nearly besides himself at the gleam of gold on the cave walls... but he turns to you (Gideon) and says with a wide grin...

"Ha! I heard that quoute be bandied about since time out o' mind, lad. But I think, as I always did, that ye have it a bit off. If ye be reading the true Holy Texts which that bit o' Divince poetry be coppied from ye'd read the line be formal "the LOVE o' money be the root of all evil"... money just a tool, it's them that let it dominate their lives to the point that they be killing and hurting for it that'd be evil. O' course, I'm not one on religious folks (no disrpespect), but I know me letter, and I've studdied a bit o' lore on occasion from the priestly folk. But I reckon on this point I'd make it clear." he adds with a sincere bow, made comical by the avarice in his face.

Brett seems to realize the avarice, and checks himself. Then he shrugs with a grin and adds "Now then, if it be ME that did the writing, rather then the gods's that insipired the hands of them that hold the pen, why... I'd say rather, it ain't the money, nor even the LOVE of the money that leads a lad astray. Instead I'd write: the LACK of money be the root of all evil, and then I'd think ye got something. Man don't be suffering fer want of a third house, man be sufferin' for a want of a bit of bread and a safe place for him and his folk to sleep."he adds with a nod.

I would be more than happy to allow the game to open to other players.

Hmm... very well... I like where this going... I should add that the most of the stuff I sent is happily stored at Oleg's (minus the stuff you discover on this "expidition"). So far, all of that is below the net value of the total coin mentioned above (i.e. 1,008). Everything you've found on this mission, from the wand, to the mine shaft, are now "company property".

By the way, Smendor, if I don't get the "Contract" from you soon, I'll be creating one myself via the distribution of goods and gear.

Here is what Brett has on his person via gear.
I should add that this is gear he started with, and not been ammmended. Any "extra gear" and the cost and weight, has been put down below on the second horse. Oh, one more thing, the cost of the potions was deducted from "Party Loot". So of the potions I've mentioned already, everyone please make sure the cost from their own "Private Stash"....

Also, this stash is "Theoretical" at best. Oleg may find a buyer for the horse when you are gone, and sell them all for twice the ammount. In which case everyone makes money on the horses, except for Brett and Smendor. Brett, less the cost of one horse, and Smendor the cost of 4 horses. Or the horses could all die in a fire, and everyone looses everyhing via "horse wealth" EXCEPT Brett and Smendor.

Anyway...

On Brett:

On Person
Name Weight Cost
1 Pistols 2.5 lbs 150 GP
1 Pistol 2.5 lbs 150 GP
Aldori Dueling Sword (MW) 1.5 lbs 20 GP

In Satchel
Powder Horn with Pistol Shot 10 Rounds 2 lbs 10 GP
Pipe --- 2 GP
Tobacco Pouch 4 ounces 5 SP
Healer’s Kit 2 lbs 50 GP
Silver Hip Flask 2 lbs 5 GP

On now Brett's trusted steed...

On Brett's Pony:

Riding Saddle 25 lbs 10 GP
Saddle bags 8 lbs 4 GP

Total 33 lbs 59 GP

On War Pony
Name Weight Cost
Musket 12 lbs 300 GP
Powder Horn with Flechette Shot 10 Rounds 2 lbs 30 GP
-- Flechette shot can only be used in Musket. Increase Range Increment to 100 feet

edit: I will keep everyone's tab at olegs in the form of GP

headed to bed. I'll work out the specifics of the gear tomorrow at work. Feel free to discuss amongst yourselves in the mean time.

WIth a serene smile Gideon responds,

"There are those in the world who are so skeptical of the gods that they believe them to be fiction. Such people believe that what most would call divine magic is more closely related to arcane magic than the will of any gods. They believe that divine Miracles, and what not, is magic being channeled through an individual just like an archamge would to. Only where an archmage would no doubt take all credit the 'priest' claims another, a deity in this case, allowed him to perform such feats. I've never met a god or goddess, so it's not my place to pass such judgements. Based on what I've seen evidence suggests to me that either could be true. "

"I'm not a priest and my words are not from holy text. I've never had much use for holy texts. My words come from a place of understanding and not one of divine penance. Ethics and religion can be related, but they are not reliant upon one another. Even an Athiest's have morals. If the gods truly control all then how can this be so?"

"Hmmm... I like book debates..."Brett says rubbing his hands enthusiastically.

"Now, let's be taking it by points. Firstly, to round out a bone to pick with ye, if I may be so bold, athiests, them that don't believe in gods, they be insane, or liars. Have to be, because everyone knows the god's got powers to grant. Else, how could an athiest recieve healing from a god's priest, or damage from a gods' wrath? Maybe a lad don't be agreeing on the NATURE of a god, but to doubt their existence plain? That be Tom-foolery. It ain't like a bunch of stories and legends; why, we see their power every day. A priest raises his hands and crushes his god's enemies, or heals the blind, or the sick... that power be god given. If ye don't BELIEVE it be god given, then how do ye account fer the powers. Simple... there ain't no accounting fer it!"

He adds the last as he stretches out his legs and pulls out his pipe, lighting up.

"Now, only ANOTHER Tom-Fool be saying that gods control EVERYTHING, for even the gods don't be saying THAT. They admit they don't control everything, which is why there be so many bleeding gods to begin with... running about and so forth. If they controlled everything, then ye'd need only one god, and that'd be some god indeed to control everything... Don't make sense! Why, what'd he need to do if he was tired, or had to talk to a folk? God's can't be every place at once, as I see it, so that idea be out. But ye need more learning on the books to know that gods themselves don't offer to control everything, nor pretend to."

He sends a determined smoke ring over the entrence to the new "mine" and then blows a string of smoke that stabs through it like an arrow, and cocks an eye.

"Next, I be thinking better of ye before now. Ye be saying ye don't have much use fer holy texts, nor reading them. And why not? Wisdom can be found any place. I knew a lad to the northlands... big son o' buck too... called him a Shaman... prayed to the Winds and Sky he did... one time he be telling me that wisdom can be found ANY place, and never be 'feared to look fer Wisdom, if ye want to be wise. He said "Ye can find Truth in any place, the sky, the clouds, the winds... even under a rock may hold truth"... now not fer nothing, but ye didn't know that Shaman's that pray to the winds got not much use fer Shaman folk that pray to Earth, so fer him to say THAT... well, it be good speaking on his manner of seeking. See, he done figure that a man not be 'feared to look for wisdom, truth, knowledge, and all that sort... in ANY place... I'd just figure ye'd be of THAT cut o' cloth, rather then the folks that turn up their nose at where they be finding truth and learning..."he adds with a shake of his head.

"And how ye be saying that ethics and religion not be relying on each other? Why... 'course they do! Why's it else that some things be "pure" evil and some things be "pure" good... Take devil now; it be evil by blood. Ye get a wizard to check with his spells and he'll prove the facts; some things just be born evil, others good, like the angel girl here,"he nods to Ariarh, the Aasimar. "She be good as can be, always with her nice things to say, and gentle ways... ethics be laws man writes to justify his own code. But Evil be evil, and good be good... at least, according every spellslinger I've done met, 'cepting of course YOU... what, ye cast "Are ye Evil" on a demon and the spell says... "Brett breaks off from his normal voice to speak more "dramtically" and with a somewhat ghostly and comical voice "This one be not evil... it be... somewhat dis-ethical... whooooo..."he adds the last with a wave of his hands and silly wail that is meant to draw a smile, not provoke anger.

"Now yer last point be yer best only; mortals got to be gods! And well, what of it? Why shouldn't we become gods, or goddesses, neither,"he adds the last with a polite nod at Ariarh. "Ye seem to think gods made themselves out o' nothing... but everything had a begining...even gods. Take a pretty impressive god to be BEFORE a begining... 'cause that don't make sense! And the gods be making sense, in their own light, I'll grant 'em. Why, this month be celebrating Lamash, and why? Because it be a month of dieing and going dead, and such. That be making straight sense, if I may be so bold, as everything be dieing and going dead, even as we be speaking. Lad, ye be a good sort, but I spent a good few years o' my life with a Duke and his family that learned me propper on deep thinking. Ye need to get to that thinking, as I be seeing it... go out to some quiet place..."he gestures back to the plains "listen to the wind... the water... hell, watch a rock grow... let yer mind be open to thoughts other then yer own... it'll do yer heart good!"

He adds the last with a grin and another exhale of the smoke from his mouth, then stands and bows dramatically and comically to you all, then wanders to the cave entrence and dances around it singing a little song to himself "Gold, gold, gold... gotta love gold, gold, gold..."and a lot of other nonsense to boot. Brett seems well pleased by this find, and in a mood to talk at length about anything anyone wants to chat about, and he doesn't seem to give a tinker's cuss for anyone who takes issue with him.

Male Dwarf Shielded Fighter

I will send out a first draft tomorrow.

Brett recommends the party crash out here by the mine, if a storm is coming, which it clearly seems to be. Using the cave as place to set up camp, and take the horses under cover, seems like a good idea. Smendor’s constant pleas for medical attention may have attracted the attention of the resident healer, but she adds that she does not have the ability to use “diagnose disease” unless she memorized the spell in the morning with her daily meditations; which she hasn't. However, if she does this in the morning, she will have to memorize new spells. This can be complicated if they get in trouble tomorrow, but if the party wants to risk it, she can memorize “diagnose disease” in the morning, cast it, then the next day memorize new spells.

Though Ariarh has asked on multiple times for help picking spells, she has gotten almost no response from anyone IN game. Remember, out of game ideas are great, but I want this to be like a story, so if you can’t chat about things IN game, then it’s just good advice and will likely not happen.

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

Looking at Smendor in main, but realising Alaric is suffering from similar symptoms.

"My dear companions, I cannot diagnose your disease because it unfortunately isn't in my repertoire of spells for today. I would like to help, but sadly, my hands are tied. If you are still alive by the morning, I can add it to my spell list but then I beseech you to remember, if there is a battle, my powers will be greater encumbered by such an ineffectual spell." Ry has kept her voice relatively even but she is getting more than a little annoyed with her companions believing she can change her spells at will as if that is her prerogative, like some great god or goddess.

Dior hops up on a rock, let's out a little snort from his beak, and a hiss, then turns and struts back over to Ariarh. Apparently he is offering support to his mistress on some point...

male Tiefling Gestalt staff magus/weapon adept monk 5

Gideon patiently waits for Brett to finish with a slight smile on his face,

"'Debating politics or religion is an exercise in insanity. As with any points based purely on faith neither party will be swayed. Besides, you're points only show that you did not hear what I said. I will nonetheless attempt to clarify myself point by point. I beg you listen more closely for this is not for my benefit.

As I said it is a belief of some, not necessarily myself. Perhaps they are insane or perhaps they are correct. It is not my place to say.

Further I said ethics are related to religion, but the two are not one and the same. Even those who do not believe in gods have a sense of right and wrong. Philosophers believe, and I tend to agree, that we all have an internal moral compass independent of one's religious beliefs. For even those that venerate different gods have similar senses of right and wrong. Weather one chooses to listen is another matter entirely. Epic stories have been told about just this subject.

As far as 'the gods power' is concerned i related it to the same power as an arch mage. Mages, do not need to venerate gods in order to garner power. atheists suggest that Clerics do something similar, weather the realize it themselves or not.

Regarding the nature of the gods; To a simple farmer who has never seen magic even a mage of moderate power would seem a god. Can you define what makes separates the truly powerful from the gods? If you can you are wiser than even those who have spent centuries contemplating only that. As one gains in power surely the distance between mortals and gods get shorter. At what point, friend Halfling, does one cross the line into godhood? "

This is a much easier debate IRL where people don't go around shapeshifting and throwing fireballs about. ;-)

We cannot tell here anything in game. The ranger has the best chance of helping, but he only gets spells at level 4. No one has any kind of understanding about her connection with nature. It is almost 100% impossible for anyone to help her with their own in-game knowledge. If you are cool with open ended meta-gaming, which most would say is an unforgivable sin than we can help a lot more.

I can. I am a spell caster and have ranks in spell craft. I would know the very minor differences between how arcane and divine casters use magic, though not specific spells necessarily.

To Ariah regarding spells,

Ariah, I don't know what all spells you have available, but I do know you are the only one among us who has healing spells. If you're looking for input I would suggest you memorize all healing spells until we have another means of accomplishing that, such as a wand.

Ariah remember you can always convert them to summon natures ally. It's best to have 'notecards' for the creatures you commonly summon to keep the game moving. THere's also an app for ipad/iphone called summoner that's fantastic. I'm going to bump this thread with my high level conjurer. Look in the spot marked "commonly summoned creatures. This is my 'notecards' I use links.

I am not sure how those new classes work, but yes you could build up a knowledge base of her spells over time, but it would be a stretch as you stated for your character to have a large amount of working knowledge about her spells. If we really want a full IC chat about her spells she will need to tell us what she can do.

Magus cast spells identical to wizards only with a slightly different spell list. I don't have knowledge of Druid spells. Gideon only has very basic knowledge of how divine spells are prepared as opposed to wizardly book preparation.

Airah, this is gideon's Conjurer for the other game.

Speaking to the group, but mostly to Ariarh, "Ariarh I do not want to over state my skills in combat, but I really think having a healthy wall of steel between you and some would be aggressor is just a little more effective than you calling up some aggressive rabbits to fight for you.

Looking over at Alaric, "Ask him what one is better."

As I have a somewhat more pronounced connection the the wild than most I believe I am the one most suited to giving advice on the usefulness of certain natural magics. Ry, I would categorically not give advice to have only healing magics at your disposal. There are much better uses for your potent magics. Your healing magic should be for emergencies only. After all that is why we bought the potions. I have some knowledge of the types of spells nature provides for you and as such here are my recommendations. There is a spell that you have cast before that allows you to command the weeds and grasses and vines in an area to reach up and grab at all who are in the area. This would be an excellent spell to have readied as it has a myriad of uses. Secondly you should always have one healing spell for emergencies as I said. Third, the rest is up to you and will change day to day. Alaric will smile and bow before you again before turning to Smendor.

Smendor, I know that you believe that you are the most important person in this party. I realize that you hold all magic in disdain and that us finger wigglers are nothing but a nuisance, but I know something of the magics that she can cast. You, my friend, do not. So please, do us all a favor, and again stop speaking of that which you have no knowledge. I have no knowledge of mining ore or wearing armor and would gladly defer to you in these topics, kindly extend us the same courtesy and stop disparaging us. With that spell that you just spoke of and dismissed out of hand, she can summon up a giant many legged insect with a poisonous bite, she can summon up a horse to ride over our enemies, she can conjure a small unassuming creature called a stirge that can attach to our enemies and suck them of blood dry. These are things that the power of nature gives her. Now that you have been educated I hope that you are able to appreciate some of the things that we can do.

Enjoying the way everything is playing out. Smendor I like the way you are playing him, Alaric is just getting tired of the dismissive attitude that he holds towards spell casters. Ariarh, the spells I think you should have again are Entangle, Cure Light Wounds, and then whatever you want. You are doing great by the way and I for one am very happy to have you in the party.

Smendor speaks again, "I think next time I may wait a little longer before I jump head long into a large spider hole.

By the way Smendor was really wanted to get over the sickness we both have and he thinks getting himself and Alaric well is a better use for her power. So he said getting the two of use better would be better than summoning or healing anything. I do not think your response was within the context of here asking what was better.

The look back at your character was to say when times get hard you want a crazy dwarf that will jump into a spider hole to save you.

Alaric and Smendor are both sick which is causing use to be fatigued.

Fatigued: A fatigued character can neither run nor charge and takes a –2 penalty to Strength and Dexterity. Doing anything that would normally cause fatigue causes the fatigued character to become exhausted. After 8 hours of complete rest, fatigued characters are no longer fatigued.

Did I say anything about you and your skills in that statement, Smendor? Was I unappreciative that you helped? No on both counts. You are the one who is unappreciative of anyone but yourself. You are the one who is constantly putting people in this party and their skills down. At this Alaric will wheel Arvakur around and go speak with Ry about seeing if there are any herbs or tonics that she could give to help him with this illness.

She doesn't have any spells that remove disease. She has diagnose disease but all that does is give a +4 to the heal check which she can do today anyway. Also I know what fatigue does. If you would ask her to make a heal check on you then that would be the best option. I will do the same.

Ry would you make a Heal check to see if you can do anything to help with this illness. Thank you in advance.

Gideon responds in a stern 'fatherly' voice,

"Thats enough sniping from the both of you. If you continue to act like children this wilderness is going to kill you both. If you want to be treated like men then behave like men. If you want to be treated as children then continue as you are. "

FYI i'm not going to be able to post much for until monday-ish. I'll check in every so often, but I have a huge stats paper and no idea how to do it. So i'll be busy stressing out over that.

Male Dwarf Shielded Fighter

I am 100% befuddle as to how the conversation went that way. This is what I am talking about when I say I get flustered.

Good luck on the paper. I hated Stats!

Which part are you confused about?

I perceive that Alarac (the character, not the player) is kinda pissy and less-than diplomatic. He also seems to have an issue with dwarves. Right or wrong, that's what I'm picking up on. Were he acting similar to Gideon he may have knocked him unconscious a few times already, but probably not. Gideon is generally very Zen.

Alaric is responding to the many insults and put-downs that Smendor has been consistently throwing towards him and other spell casters. If he was talking to Gideon the way he has been talking to Alaric consistently I would imagine you wouldn't take kindly to it either. Alaric has no problem with dwarves in general, he has met a few on his journeys and in his fathers mining operation north of Skywatch, he just has a problem with THIS dwarf. He has been spit on, called names, threatened, his life's work in magic put down constantly, and generally treated as a significant inferior. I think he is quite justified in responding the way he did. Also he was much more diplomatic than he wanted to be, he wanted to just put a sleep spell on Smendor, tie him to a tree and then have a nice little discussion on the merits of "finger wiggling." But Alaric is trying to keep this little group going and not put down anyone. As he said he is aware of the benefits of Smendor in the party, he just asks for the same respect which he has not been given even once by this dwarf.

We could set here and smash each other about the head with our options about the game, but that really will get us nowhere. I will just stick with being confused.

Now I'm confused about what you are confused about lol.

If this was real life these guys would probably just hit each other then go out for beer after.

That's true, but apparently no one established dominance. ;-)

This is the way I see it

Smendor speaks, Does anyone know how to rid me of this sickness.

Ariarh Kane, speaks, yes I may know something that will help us understand what you have, but I am unsure if using one of my spell for it will make me less effective.

Smendor speaks, yes I say go for it losing the ability to summon an animal Vs learning how to help us seems like an easy call.

Alaric speaks, no the dwarf is stupid let use stay sick.

You can only use in-game knowledge here, and that is what you have.

So we have someone said they can help the other said that sounds great than you called him stupid and said a horse is strong than a heavily armed fighter.

ok a couple things first. Ry is a new player so cut her some slack. Two she doesn't ha e the spell memorized today so the earliest she could do it would be tomorrow. Three all the spell does is add to her heal check. Four I told you to ask her to try and use nonmagical means to help you. Five did you even read my post? I never said lets stay sick. She asked for some help on spell selection and I gave her my opinion. Also until you and by you I mean smendir start treating your party.mates with even a modicum of respect I'm not sure what sort of help he is going to get.

Male Dwarf Shielded Fighter

The save DC is over a 21 so a + 4 would really help. Without that + 4 Alaric will never make the DC, and this is only if she can make the heal check with a + 13.

Treat Disease: To treat a disease means to tend to a single diseased character. Every time the diseased character makes a saving throw against disease effects, you make a Heal check. If your Heal check exceeds the DC of the disease, the character receives a +4 competence bonus on his saving throw against the disease.
