Dain's King Maker Chronicles

Introduction

This is the Kingmaker Campaign, yet it is filled with many deviations from the boxed set. The "Campaign Information" page is meant as a quick resource to help sum up the thousands of posts quickly.

Your friends have charged head long upstairs - just let me know when you want to blow this thing up - and what your next move is - even now you sense the Trog's are now gathering their courage and moving forward quickly - enraged at the duplicity of your team!

As soon as I know your move as the Earth Elemental - you'll know more - you have one round before the Trogs are on you - it's your move, now.

Can I earth glide down into the cavern to the landing where I am placing the "bomb"?

Yes indeed

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

Thank you.

As an earth elemental, she starts burrowing and moving through the stone, dirt and earth, as if she is swimming. As she earth glides, she leaves no tunnel or hole behind and she does not create a ripple or other sign of her presence.

Do I need to make any checks?

Just tell me when you want to "detonate" the bomb - and where you are when you do it, in relation to your guess on the other guys.

Remember, too - you don't need to move far from the explosion. Once it goes off - as long as you are "inside" the wall - the fire cannot hurt you; but you'd need to move at least ten feet "inside" the wall for safety - which you can do as a Move Action.

Once the fire and explosion go off, you can move back somewhat further up the stairs, pop out, take a quick Perception roll to see what happens - then move on.

Meanwhile - the rest of the party is madly dashing for the top, and should be out the same round that you detonate the bomb - I do need to know how far up you are when you do it (that is - 10 stories up, 15, 9, 11 - how high - this part is actually important, though).

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

Having earth glided down 20 feet (starting point landing at 50 feet) to the landing 30 feet from the floor of the cave (170 ft from the surface/entrance), she partially slips through the earth and rock and carefully positions the powder horn "bomb" in the corner of the landing. Slipping further back into earth/stone, she quickly casts spark, throwing a spark toward the tar/oil concoction and completely slips beneath the earth and rock, moving 10 feet back from the surface.

At this point, the powder horn is in the corner of the landing, at least 17 storeys down (3 storeys up from the floor of the cave).

A tremendous explosion shakes the cavern around you - you hear screams, rocks tumbling, and feel the searing heat rush by as the flame roars out...

You are able to peek out quickly and see that a huge slab of rock cracked and split, dropping a huge chunk of stone - which is now wedged heavily in the stairwell - preventing anything from charging forward.

You quickly guess that with time, and some cunning, a small person may be able to ease their way between the cracks - perhaps - but it would not be easy.

By then your friends would be on the surface of the cave - not to mention the fact that you doubt seriously that the Trogs will advance if they are afraid of another explosion.

You hope that is the case - the smell of roasted flesh has drifted to you - even as you advance quickly toward the surface, and to your friends!

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

Earth gliding at double speed, she quickly makes her way upward and finally breaks through the surface and slips out of the ground, looking about her.

She was concerned about her companions and fervently hoped they had all gotten up the stairs before the explosion. Dropping her wildshape form and becoming "Ariarh" again, she anxiously scans the area for sight of her companions and anything else (consequence of explosion, fell creature etc).

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24

"Dior? Anuk-su? Brett? Dire? Are you all alright?", hoping to hear an answer back from any of those who came with her into this swampland, including Henry, Mak Morn, Ryul and Arsinian.

"Dior? Anuk-su? Brett? Dire? Are you all alright?", hoping to hear an answer back from any of those who came with her into this swampland, including Henry, Mak Morn, Ryul and Arsinian.

As Ariarh turns - she is suddenly startled to see the imperious gaze of Anuk-su staring at her with a somewhat flat expression.

"Was there any doubt? Now - enough of this mud and slime! Hearken, then - we return to my fortress - for I have much to discuss with Adjt - further - it is both right and wise that thee send some of thy mendicants to this place and fully block it... nay - wait! Not so! Do not block it - rather, mark it well - for I say unto thee; we shall return to this place anon - and strike thusly into the dark! By all gods living dead and yet be - and by my lord Apsu - I shall solve the answer to this mystery!" she says somewhat cryptically - muttering to herself with bold nod of her young head.

"Hey - don't ask me," Brett says, seeing your look at Anuk-su's rather odd speech "Personally - I'd rather hit ol' Otter's place for a hot bath and massage - 'course - wouldn't mind a nap, neither! After all that - a body could use a bit o' shut eye and a good meal, eh?" he says looking at Ariarh and the rest of the crew, even though it is still only midday.

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

Looking from Anuk-su to Brett, she opens her mouth to speak, but decides against it and closes it.

After a short pause, she decides to say something, "Anuk-su, when all the Council are returned to Saravale we shall discuss our findings in the swamp and then decide what shall happen. I hope I am clear in this", her sapphire eyes intense and no-nonsense.

Then to Brett, "It has been a hard day and one filled with many obstacles and everyone deserves to rest and unwind. I agree, we shall make our way out of the swamp. We mark this place well and we may return with engineers and alike. I will put together a report for the Council once I return to my apartments."

And with that, she goes to Dior and makes sure he is recovering from his ordeal with the giant tarantula and then rallies the group to leave the swamp. "Let us return to town. We have accomplished much for now", the smell of roasted flesh still burning in her nostrils. I am unharmed, if any of you are interested. She felt bad for the fire elementals that must have perished in the explosion but grateful for their aid and sacrifice.

"Yeah, I'm with Brett on this one, feared, poisoned, and almost blowed up makes a body a bit tired.

Dire begins wiping mud and dirt from his armor and then stops realizing it is going to take a lot more concerted effort that he is currently willing to give.

"Still though, you got to admit, it was kind of exhilarating."

Anuk-su turns her own gaze on you, patting you once on the arm.

"Indeed - thou art correct to have such a discussion. Meanwhile - thy have performed thy duties well, and have done much to aid us in the caves. I shall not forget thy efforts, nor thy support - in time, when I come fully into my inheritance, I shall reserve a special place for all the help you have provided me with," she adds in a somewhat maternal tone.

"Well - before we be going anywhere, why don't we sort through everyone right quick and see if there's none that need healing, eh?" Brett adds.

He glances at Mak Morn - who has blood dribbling from his armor, where a stone spear head had scored him.

"Och! That just be a scratch, laddy - it take's more then that to wound a bloody dwarf - don't you know! Still - a wee nip o' spirits wouldn't be amiss - or, at the least - something stronger, eh?" the dwarf adds somewhat stoutly.

Brett reaches over and places his hands on the dwarf, offering some healing to him.

"Oye - Ariarh - how ye be fairing? I got only one healing spell left - I can do ye, or Dior - whoever be sicker?" Brett asks Ariarh directly, after looking over her for any signs of injury.

He also takes a glance at Ironhorse and Ryul - who had also been in the fray - but, luckily - they seem okay; as does Anuk-su.

"Lad - ye want exhilarating- wait till ye get to bloody Otter's! He's a water elf - has a laundry - makes sure all the clothes get pressed washed clean. But he also does a mean shave and bathe - and his ladies know how to take care o' a lad propper... er, that is to say - they can really cook up a mean slab o' bacon and have a pretty good market on fine cigars and such," he adds with a suddenly sheepish glance at the others.

"Say lad, ye don't need any healing yerself, do ye?" Brett asks.

Ironhorse merely rolls his eyes - but Mak Morn lets out a loud bark of laughter.

Brett tosses Dior a piece of bacon, and continues to wait for Ariarh to tell him if she needs healing or not - or if she is willing to heal Mak Morn - or if she needs Brett to do so.

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

She wonders at the meaning of Anuk-su's words of a special place for her ... but remains quiet. She merely acknowledges the words with a respectful incline of her head toward the little dragon girl. She was very relieved that all were alive after the run in with the giant tarantula and the troglodytes.

Upon Brett's question, she answers, "I was fortunate that I escaped without a scratch from this perilous adventure. But, thank you for asking, Brett. I shall undertake the healing of Dior and Mak Morn for I have some spells", giving the Holbyt a gentle smile.

She lays her hand upon her beloved griffon and casts a CLW spell (and with aid/benefit of the gold dragon amulet): 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (3, 2) + 5 = 10

Then striding over to Mak Morn, touches his chest and casts a CLW spell on the strong dwarf (and with aid/benefit of the gold dragon amulet): 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (8, 2) + 5 = 15

"Does any other require healing before we leave this place?"

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

Turning to Dire, she gives him a soft faraway smile, "I find giving Tal free rein and just riding across the grasses, the cool wind stroking my face, to be exhilarating, my friend. The fell creatures we encountered down below? Not so much so", yet mentally noting the man's fortitude and courage during the tussle. "I do thank you for your assistance, and noting the other brave companions standing around her, grateful for everyone's hard work this day. It would have turned out quite differently had I entered this cave alone. Mayhap this will ease some of the fear our people have felt knowing the troglodytes were free to escape the swamp and roam through the township. I believe we must continue being vigilant and regularly monitor the creatures in this swampland."

Shaking his head,"Nah...scratches mostly. Seems I got as good as I gave. Not used to wandering around underground. Most of the work I done has been out in the open. I take it a lot of you all could actually SEE down there in that blackness. Must be nice."

Nodding to Ariarh,"Glad to help miss. Hope my help was worth the coin. Derovath gets off on his own often enough, I'm just glad she comes back after a while. Never left me in a bind so far."

"Brett, I think I'll take you up on that trip to Otter's. I'm not sure if I or my armor needs more cleaning."

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

Noting Dire's comment in regard to seeing in the dark, "Aye, having darkvision can certainly come in handy in caves or moonless nights. You did well enough with your sunrod."

"Do you enjoy riding, Dire?"

"Ah well I guess I enjoy it well enough. I beats walking for certain but to just up and ride off for the hell of it, can't ever say THAT has any appeal to me." Dire unhooks the waterskin from his belt and takes a large swig. 'Gods! Being down there made me thirsty. Any of you all want some?" Dire offers out the waterskin to all in the area.

"I know Derovath LIKES to run around sometimes just for the hell of it, and I can kind of tell her moods at times, but I try not to impose myself on animals if I can or at least as little as possible."

Female Silver Dragon My Level of Class is unmatched by any and all!

"Aye! Good enough - yes - we have been in this mud-hole for some time, it is best we retire to the township and warn them of this place. Doubtless there are other exits then the one we discovered - even now those creatures may be plotting revenge... We may yet discover an entire army amassed and ready to assault the township for our intrusion. That said - let us waste no more time dallying over talking small!"

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

Ariarh was making small talk as she was walking, trying to make her way out of the swamp, thus not wasting time.

Ariarh Kane wrote:

No doubt - but Anuk-su seems to be less eager to believe that anyone is doing as good as she is, and for some reason thinks that handing out orders is also a good plan, too. Her usual immature ways - much like most seven year old children - seems almost overwhelmed by the juxtaposition from her obvious knowledge of language and history (VERY book smart - very NOT people smart). You also remember that her social skills are most likely lacking - royalty often has a tendency to look down on "lower classes" - and dragons also have a tendency to act in the same way...

Take a dragon princess with no social skills who is only seven years old, and this sort of thing is bound to keep happening.

Nevertheless, pushing on to the exit from this swamp seems to be a good idea, and you will exit the swamp in roughly an hour. At which point you are free to get cleaned up, and then make your plans, and do what you can to analyze the information that you have gathered...

So, we can move forward an hour now and socially rp back in the village?

Ariarh Kane wrote:

Absolutely!

To All

In order to expedite the process of getting both teams back together and ready for the mission south - please take this time to toss up any questions you have for research or information gathering, as well as summaries for plans of things that you want your character to do in the next few days.

Remember - even though this has taken a long time, it is still the same afternoon - and your allies are on a 5 day round trip journey. Once their combat is done, they will turn around and come back, but that will still take them a total of 5 days.

To make this go faster, in the next several days - you will no doubt want questions answered, facts broken down, and so on - no to mention making plans. Feel free to summarize questions and ideas, and then I'll say something like "Okay - that question will take about 5 hours to answer; here is your answer in brief - next question is about 4 hours to answer, leaving you with X amount of time to go."

To simplify - as of noon on day 4 you have a total of 32 hours to work with (this assumes 8 hours of sleep, 8 hours of riding between town and fortress, prayers/meditations, eating etcetera) - and the remaining 8 hours of actual leg work for a period of 4 more days.

Each question will take you 6 hours to answer. However - with a Diplomacy roll of 15 you may knock off 2 hours. For every +5 over 15 you roll, you may knock off an additional 1 hour. In other words - a 20 would give you 3 hours to answer a question. All questions take at least 1 hour to answer. If you beat the total by more then 35 - you may ask an additional free question (in other words, you roll a Natural 20 on your Diplomacy check - this bonus question will be yours, no matter what your Diplomacy modifier is).

Once I see the questions, I will write feedback - then you are all free to social RP until the other group gets back.

I think that will be soon, as I am now going to have to take over a few of the characters and I can forward their pace a bit.

Good times! Toss up the questions you want to ask - currently you have a minimum of 5 questions - more, depending on how your Diplomacy roll works out...

Put up the questions you want answered, with Diplomacy rolls - and we'll go from there. Just remember, it's questions that your NPC would ask, not Kae....

Dain doesn't have much else to do except explore town, He'll replenish his stocks of sunrods and tanglefoot bags if he can. Otherwise, he'll visit Otter's and get all his armor and clothes cleaned. He's not up for gambling or bloodsports so he'll stay clear of those areas.

Assuming he gets paid as well

His only inquiry would be to Brett about what would be involved in staking out a claim in the land.

As soon as they arrive back in Saravele, Arsinian get s to work. He call out his troops and has them form-up ranks.

Things to do:
Figure out how to get through the tunnels down into the Trogg cave

Prepare things like Oil/pitch to pour down the stairs to torch the Troggs. The oil burns away, and then the forces can advance into the cave. only really needed if the Troggs advance as we move in.

If we put a bounty of say 10gp a trogg, we can see if the Hunters want to join the foray into the cavern.

How are we going to keep the place lighted while we fight? Bring oil, and wood down after the soldiers and make movable pires to keep the area well lit?

I'd liek some discussion on what else we gotta do about the troggs before taking action, and Out of character is easier for me to work with...

there's more to do, but this is all i got for now

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

As soon as Ariarh and Dior arrive back in the village, she will call Anuk-su and will make her way to her apartments so she can clean herself (wash and change clothes) and Dior (remove sticky webbing from his wings). She will have a light meal with her griffon and ward (if Anuk-su is present and happy to oblige) and then she will compile her report for the Council on her findings in the swamp and especially the underground cave/tunnel.

If Anuk-su goes to meet with Adjt re the findings of the silver kobold items and Sylvath's emblem/heraldry, Ry would like to attend the meeting to hear what they have to say and ask her own questions, if they will permit her presence. (Will list questions soon with respective diplomacy rolls.)

Then she will want to meet with Sir Dashan and Tyrene Aliento to discuss the black rock/stone found in the underground cave and the similarities between the Spider's Nest and the swamp cave and see if they know any more and can give her information. Plus, this may lead to discussion re the quest south. (Questions will come soon, with respective diplomacy rolls.)

Regarding Dire’s Question –

Brett will either take you to get paid first, or to get cleaned first; in this case, it’s up to you on preference. In either case, he will promise that you get your coin whenever you like it, but as for such trivium as the buying of land/ Better to do that over a more comfortable place.

He takes you to the half-elf named Ohe-teyhr, nicknamed “Otter”. Otter’s elven part is actually aquatic elf. He doesn’t seem to speak very good Common – and prefers to communicate either through his multiple bath attendants, or his broken slang.

You find the quarters to be rather shabby; mostly large tents with huge kettles in the back, and large cauldrons filled with boiling water; you also see that there are somewhat “private” areas where his bathing attendants will give you a full wash, haircut, shave and massage – the ending as happy as you could please…

Brett himself is content with merely laying back, enjoying a massage and getting a rather sumptuous meal, which he pauses from the eating of only to take the occasional puff from an enormous cigar – or to answer your question.

”Well now, land be a right tricky thing,” he says, letting out a deep groan of pleasure.

”Fer now the council be keeping everyone in this town, and the town up north a piece – in the custody of one Master Oleg… If ye want a piece o’ land, well – I reckon ye can buy yerself a farm, or maybe buy a shop in the town. Most the shops are kind of like townhouses – the first floor is used to conduct business and such, the upper floors are the living quarters, the basement is storage – if ye got a mind – ye could set up yerself in such a spot. Though buying a townhouse like that be downright expensive – maybe about 12,000 gold pieces, I reckon – maybe less. Anyhow – once ye get a shop set up, or a piece o’ land – what do ye got planned on fer business? Anything in particular like?”

”See – we got a lad who done does magic and other such hash – he be planning on opening a school fer gifted and talented magi and the like. But he’s away’s up north – elf boy, funny sort, kind o’ stuck up – but I reckon ye’ll meet him in a few days or so. Anyhow – if ye get something set up, what kind of work ye planning on doing?” Brett asks amicably.

FYI – you have a few days to do things in town, including research on plans. If you have something particular, or more specific questions – let me know and we can go from there.

To Arsininan –

More on this can be answered later, once I have some questions to work with. It should be noted, though – the tunnel you exited from seemed to be collapsed after the make-shift bomb went off – and, for now, that exit from the caves is blocked.

Though, of course, there may be others…

Anuk-su agrees with your suggestion to get properly cleaned up; she seems very happy to go to your cottage, and insists that you brush her hair for her. If you agree – she will give you a small hug and a little peck on the cheek, somewhat shy. It seems that she is eager to be seemed proud and imperious – but behind closed doors, when it is just the two of you – her guard drops a lot, and she reverts back into the little girl. You observe though that in public, she works very hard to prevent that side of her from showing.

Meanwhile, more answers can be presented once I know more about what your questions are.

Sorry, I had trouble accessing paizo yesterday.

Hearing her young ward's insistent request, she picks up the hairbrush from the nightstand and pats the place beside her on the bed. As she first gently runs her fingers through Anuk-su's silver hair to untangle the more stubborn knots, she begins to rhythmically work the brush down her hair, enjoying the small intimacy and peace this affords them both. Dior is curled up on his mat on the floor, his eyes closed, possibly dozing. Her poor companion certainly had a hard time today with the giant tarantula and deserved his rest. She was glad he was alive, that they all survived the trip into the underground cave.

As she brushes, she softly hums an old lullaby her father used to sing to her as a child, hoping Anuk-su would enjoy and be soothed by it.

Questions will be posted later today. :)

Whew! That’s actually good news; I had the same problem with Paizo myself, and just spent the last several hours running virus scans, updating my computer, and defragging it to boot! Although I had over 14 GB of “Fragged” Material, I was able to fix it and move on – but now I find out it turns out o be Paizo, not the computer! Well, anyway, at least that’s figured out now.

Quick question: I need to know what time, specifically, that you arrive home, and how long you stay there – specifically. I know you had plans to visit Adjt, as well as Aliento, and Sir Dashan, but the specific time you arrive home, and stay home, is very important.

Anuk-su seems to enjoy your work, though she does offer some “suggestions” on how you could improve your brushing, however she seems to content herself to saying very little.

You do notice that she seems a bit preoccupied with something, and, on a brief examination – you see she is holding tightly one of the platinum coins you found in the cave in her fist.

You mentioned that we exited the swamp at midday (12pm). Ariarh's apartments are in the village and so I'm presuming it will take 5 to 10 mins to get to the apartments (?) and they spend an hour there -- bathe, change clothes, brush hair and eat a light meal/rest before leaving to speak with Adjt and then the Ustalavians. So, they would leave the apartments at roughly 1.30pm. I can adjust this if the timing is off.

"You have one of the platinum coins we found, my dear ward. Why do you hold it so tightly in your hand? What is its significance to you?", hoping to get the young girl to open up to her.

”This coin – it bears the stamp of my people – long before any of you were born – it was the coin of this land. I have seen them before, I have held such things before – trinkets, or cheap baubles they may have seemed to me… yet they were tangible proof of my people’s existence. Now, they are all gone – all of them dead; even those who were given the chance to guard me, even now two of the six are dead. I am the last of my line; the only one of my people left, and though there may yet be other silver dragons in this world, there are no more folk like the kobolds that stood by my people, my allies, my companions…”

She lets out a deep sigh, but this is not her usual melodrama, she is genuinely pained.

”When I hold this coin in my hand, I ask myself – Could it be that I lay hands on such mettle as I had once touched long ago? Could I even now hold in my hand a coin that was touched and handled by kinsmen – my father, my mother – my friends? – but what of it? It is only mettle, only memory…”

She shakes her head suddenly, as if forcing herself to rouse from these self-pitying feelings.

”But no,” she stops her speech suddenly, hopping up and beginning to pace in the room.

”This cannot be so! That this coin, and any other tangible proof of my people would fall to such a mean fate as this – I do not accept it! I shall not accept it! There must be other proofs – and other evidence! Could it be that this coin came from some forgotten cache that was sequestered in some ruined hovel that those scum pilfered? Perhaps! Or – could it be more? Is it then possible that there may be other such places of refuge that housed people of mine own lineage?”

She turns to you suddenly with a fierce gleam in her eye.

”It could be so – it might be so – nay; it must be so! I cannot be the only one who was left to survive – there may yet be others – there may yet be those who still live to walk the earth, and who are under such enchantments as even I was! Lady Kane – we must now seek for such evidence – we must search as best as possible any such places that folk such as myself may yet live! This is why I would speak to Adjt, for if such a thing existed, he alone of my folk is versed in the lore enough to deem where such refuges may be kept – he may give us clues or evidence to find folk such as my own people – or even as his own! We cannot let that chance slip by our fingers – it must be pursued!”

"Yet… yet, I cannot dive forward so eagerly, even as haste is gnawing at me, so too prudence counsels patience! We cannot speak of these things openly, for it may give flame to wild rumor, and those aligned against my folk may also seek such places – for to find such things would give them powerful leverage over me and mine; and they would surely ransom that which we hold dear,” she continues, speaking almost more to herself, as she continues to pace back and forth.

You sense clearly now what she is hoping – that if she was buried in a magical sleep, with goods and gear for her hundreds of years later – is it possible that others like her are buried? If so, those very places would have such things like what she found in the cave – but that does make her hope true. For now, it is only hope… but she clings to it tightly – even as tightly as she clings to the coin itself.

Timing things is perfect – now that I know what happened, and more importantly – when it happened – I am quite content. Excellent – after you have a chance to answer her – if you chose to – she will go directly to Adjt for more details.

To all

Yeah – if you have any other questions – the best thing for it is to just toss them up – bam, bam, bam, bam. Then I can answer them quick, and by the time I answer them and you read the responses the other group should be back home – and you should all be together.

Arsinian gets into town and immediately goes to the guard-house and changes guard rotation.

Troop rotations:

There are to be 3 shifts, 8 hours long, equal troop dispersal among all shifts.
I can't quite find all my troop dispersal information... and i can't find the post, so i'll have to edit the numbers if i get this wrong, but...
iirc

75 Shield-bearers
75 swordsmen
50 Archers
50 spearmen
25 bruits
25 infiltrators

We have 15 archers on the walls at a time, leaving 5 left to take part in other guard duties throughout the day.

18 shield bearers, leaving 21 left off wall duty
18 swordsmen, leaving 21
8 bruits, leafing one extra to rotate in/go on missions
3 infiltrators leaving 16 to go about business within the city.

These numbers are on the wall at all times. the same amount are on-call, and need to be ready to get to the wall in case of attack, and that number are off duty, and aught to be resting.

the 64 men off Wall duty are left to patrol the streets etc, uphold the peace and all that. These men rotate on Wall duty, replacing those in the Wall duty rotation longest, and are off Wall duty when it is their turn.

THis should keep fresh eyes on the wall at all times, and keep anyone from getting exhausted, or too bored, while still maintaining a sizable defense force.

Diplomacy to rally the troops
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Arsinian gathers the men after they return. "Well, boys, we found the Trogg caves, caved in one of the entrances, and while we figure out exactly what to do about the lizards, and how to do it right, I want us to keep watch on the walls, be ready to repel em. Doubt the bastards'll be comin up here any time soon, seein' as we did a messy number on 'em down in the swamp, but can't be to careful with our faire city, now. So i got your orders men!"
He then gets himself his usual escort, 2 infiltrators, an archer, and a shield bearer (12 cha, all) and proceeds about his business:

2.

to Brett and Ry:

"So, I figure that them Troggs won't take kindly to how we wrecked their caves, and i don't expect no thank-you for killin' their spider, either. SO i figure if we put a bounty on em, we can get some extra hands in case of retaliation. Save some lives, and if none show up, it's free labor, no cost to us, as none came up the hill to get killed. What do ya think? How's 5 gold a head sound?"

Arsinian sets a price on Troggs having first consulted with Brett and Ariarh, on the way back to the city. He goes to where the bounty-hunters are, and posts the sign, telling the folk there "Well, those troggs that attacked may be a threat gents, but for you they're also a chance to make coin, so for every trogg you take down, you'll get a reward, in case they attack, so if keep an eye on the walls, especially at night, You're likely to have a shot to make some money!"
Sets the price at 5gp a Trogg, sounds reasonable, based on wealth as far as i know, but i'm not sure about cost of living in saravale...
Diplomacy to get them interested in helping

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11

3.
He then gets himself his usual escort, 2 infiltrators, an archer, and a shield bearer (12 cha, all)
and proceeds to gather information to find someone who would be able to help them get into the cave again.
Gather Information:

Aid Arsinan in gathering information
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24

4.
Goes to Selendria
Meeting with the elf woman, he knocks at the door, and bows his head when she answers, greeting those around. "Beggin' your pardon ma'am, but I'd like ta' get some advice from you, maybe hire services and such. See, the Troggs that attacked, we found their lair, and ended up caving in the tunnel out, but there may be more entrances and such. Anyway, we caved it in with a bomb made of a tangle-foot bag, some oil sort of gunk, and Brett's gun-powder. Worked mighty well, so i wanted to come round and ask if you knew much about that sort of thing, and we might be able to get some of that sort of thing from ya' possibly, ma'am?" he says, trying to be polite and respectful as he can.

"Aye, one of his men infiltrator chimes in. "See they got to come charging up the swamp to get at us, but we only got so many archers, and if the rest of us could rain down some fire or something on em, we'd be able to stop em form gettin' in at all"

The other adding"It could save a great many of our lives. The lizards are pretty strong if we can't keep our distance and high-ground."

Arsinian's diplomacy
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
the infiltrators aid arsinian
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23

arsinian also notices Clari still at selendria's, and greats her. "Hallo miss. You the girl what was from where the General grew up, right? How do ye do?" he says with a nod, not sure what the General's relationship with this young looking girl was, but not wanting to have issues with his CO cause of her.

Clari responds Kurtly, "Yes. I am," and then looks to Selendria for cues as to how to properly act.

5.
not sure what else he's got to do at the moment... any suggestions?

"Twelve Thousand gold? Wow, that a bit steep but in town living isn't really for me. A place away from most other folks would be a lot better, so I guess a farmstead or hunting land. Hell if the town need a watch post manned I could see my way clear to do that if need be."

Dire enjoys himself at Otter's but otherwise just kicks around town for maybe a day before heading out to go hunting/exploring in the nearby woods.

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

"Your kinsmen were very clever when they froze you and your guard. Mayhap they duplicated the spell with another of your clan or they could have hidden a cache of coin and jewels in this land in preparation for when you awaken. I cannot say for certain which it could be. I would like to join you when you speak with Adjt. I would ask him if he was told anything in confidence before you were all bespelled or he understood the significance of the platinum coin and the location they were found. Even the horn that Officer Wells now carries on his person that once belonged to your kin."

Question 1 to Adjt: "Do you know about a secret cache of coin and other items, a horn, that was prepared for when you awoke from your deep slumber? Were there others of your kind who were frozen in the same way and possessed such items? "

Diplomacy with Adjt: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11 (crap :/)

Question 2 to Adjt: "We found traces, flecks of black rock amongst the sandstone. It had the look of obsidian but unlike it, it seemed to absorb the light when one drew too near (my light spell on Dire's sword and his sunrod were diminished significantly) and if a person's willpower is not strong it manages to induce unnatural fear and dread. There was a similar rock but formed into an altar at the Spider's Nest near Oleg's. It had the same effect as it drew the light and any magic unto itself. Have you heard or know of such a rock and its dark power? Mayhap from your own time?"

Diplomacy on Question 2: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29
More questions will follow once Adjt answers.

Later with the Ustalavians

"Sir Dashan, Mister Aliento, I have information to share with you. There is a cultist leader in town. On first meeting, this Hadad al-Kazeem seems human enough. But upon speaking with Dior, I have been informed that he smells of darkness, smoke and like some reptile and that he and his immediate armed guard shared the scent and that neither are human. Would you know anything about this cult, al-Kazeem or this type of creature? Have you spoken with Hadad al-Kazeem and what was your impression?"

Diplomacy on Q1 with Dashan and Aliento: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24

Question 2: "In our travels below the surface of the swamp, in a very deep underground cavern, we found traces of a black rock imbeded in the lighter sandstone. The black rock resembled obsidian but it absorbed energy/light and instilled fear in those whose will was not strong enough to overcome its effect. The black flecks reminded me of the black stone altar in the Spider's Nest, if you recollect the stone of which I speak. The effects were rather similar and both times we found this rock deep beneath the earth in caves. There was also another large spider protecting the place, which I cannot believe is mere coincidence. Do you have any theories about this rock or its population in two different areas of our land? Mister Aliento, have you heard or read stories of such a powerful black rock as this in any of your ancient texts?"

Diplomacy Q2: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18

Turning to Sir Dashan, "Has your Order come across such a phenomenon as this black stone and its dark power, Sir?"

Diplomacy with Dashan: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26

2.
** spoiler omitted **...

To Arsinian –

1. Regarding Troop Rotations –

Pretty good – but you already lost 17 men in the last foray when Kae was north – and you also sent men to the cave where the Osirions are – this puts you down some – roughly 21 NPC's – not a big deal – just keep track of your numbers is all.

2. To Brett –

”Well – there may be more trouble down there then you think – remember, lad – that spider had Trog bodies under it – I doubt much it was a friend o’ the Trog – just a crawling nasty that ate any that got too close. And ye may not know it – but there be other nasties in the swamp! Why – we done come against some ghoul creatures early on – but they done be different then usual ghouls – they be some sort of aquatic type… And what about that giant slug thing that attacked the town, and sprayed strings of acid all over the walls and such? That be in the swamp somewhere, and I doubt highly it be climbing all them stairs – which means it be likely there be other ways out of the pit, or other pits we done missed - which means we may have kicked open a whole nest o’ bees for our little town to pick up!”

”Damnation – when are the others getting back? They’d be a real help now!”

3. Regarding Bounties –

The bounties are quite unhappy with that offer, finding it somewhat insulting! To get 5 gold pieces to risk their life? Remember – a Trog is a creature at least on level 1 with a 25 point buy – probably higher then level 1 – killing 1 of them is hard work, and dangerous!

Better to offer something higher – such as 50 gold. Your Diplomacy encourages them to tolerate 40 Gold Pieces, maybe – but they are not happy to do it. They will need to pay their own gear to go out there, and more to find them – assuming they come back.

This may sound like a lot, but remember – even if you kill 100 Trogs – that is only 5,000 gold pieces. This assumes that the men who do the killing return to tell the tale! Also – all it takes is one man to come back with the news on where the Trogs are – then you can send in your own people.

Probably – doing a flat rate on where to find their lair – say, 100 gold pieces – may be better?

Waiph – have Arsinian toss up a Profession: Officer check – his results will aid him considerably, and I’ll give him some helpful information depending on your roll. If you don’t have the skill, I’ll let you use it untrained, for now. But I’d recommend at least taking 1 rank in Profession: Soldier for all your officers – it will eventually aid them with a heck of a lot of stuff in the future.

4. Find people to go back in.

Not entirely sure how to help here – all of your men will obey orders, that is their job. Pick your men, pick the amount, and they will do what you want.

4. Selendria –

She informs you that she may be able to make tanglefoot bags, and possibly some corrosive oil – only a person skilled in black powder knows how to make it; they keep that compound generally pretty private.

If you want to know more about purchasing black powder – go to the source; either Brett, who can make small amounts, but it may be better to go to the Duke’s son – his entire company of men is armed with swords and black powder weapons. Chances are they may have some in bulk… for a price.

They are willing to sell you 1 lbs (16 shots) for the usual price of 160 lbs. Remember, 10 gold an ounce/shot is the usual price. This is the base price of black powder – though you may be able to talk the price down a bit – they don’t have much to hand out, however.

To Dire –

”If you’re looking for a farmstead – okay, what exactly are you planning on doing with it? Well – nah – that be yer affair, I reckon,” Brett says.

If you want to go hunting – do you have a particular place you’d like to travel in? If so – what is your plan? Did you have something particular you want to hunt for, or just having your character kill time? If you want to hunt – let me know – because when it happens, we can RP the hunt out, if you want to.

But upon speaking with Dior, I have been informed that he smells of darkness, smoke and like some reptile and that he and his immediate armed guard shared the scent and that neither are human. Would you know...

Questions to Adjt –

Adjt ponders a moment –

”Lady – I do not know of any such cache’s – but of a certainty – this horn is aligned to our people. It is used by battle heralds on the field of war – any ally who hears it winded shall rush forward to he who blows it will all haste!

”It may be that others were kept secret, as we were – yet if this is true, we would not have been told; lest an enemy awaken us and torture the information from us. Even so – if there are other places hidden, then a cunning person may venture guesses where those places could yet be; for such places would be remote, even as our tower was, yet also close to some civilization, at least – civilization from whence we were young…”

To recap – any who hear the horn blown are granted Haste for 3 rounds. This is a supernatural ability – and does not stack with the spell. Further – to activate this power – the person who blows the horn must make a Perform: Wind Instruments check – DC 18 or higher. Success means the horn works with the Haste spell. A DC of 15 or higher grants any who hear it a +1 bonus to attack and damage for 1 round.

Questions to Aliento and Sir Dashan –

”What? In this town – thy own captain – this Sir Sylvath does nothing to check this menace! Enough – come, let us advance and put this villain to the sword!” Sir Dashan calls out, springing to his feet.

You hear the sound of some minor clapping – and the very near subtle swoon of Anuk-su at Sir Dashan’s bold words. Even so – they are checked by the cool council of his companion.

”Peace, brother,” Aliento says tightly.

”We cannot take such action – though we may have righteousness on our side – this land is bound by the law of them that govern, it is their will that prevails here. Further, in this matter some caution must be applied… I am not a friend to cultists, but we would be better suited to spy them more.”

Aliento turns to Ariarh –

”What more do you know of these cultists? Reptile you said – but this is a broad term… The only cult I know is that of the Scarlet Wyvern – for we have been empowered to seek the truth of their desires here – that is why we came, to follow them. These names are not Ustalavian, but southern – I am not versed in that lore, sadly – but I would know more…” he says with a thought.

”I should recommend that we do nothing – yet – but the town is in great turmoil for the trouble in the swamps. Let us use that as a diversion – let us keep this town under some type of martial law – for its own sake. While the town is confused and soldiers rush all over for protection from the swamps, the folk here will be less likely to suspect that soldiers would be spying on private citizens – they will think the guards are merely making their move about the town on duty – and therefore, we can make our move with better stealth… Come; what say you to that plan of action?”

Regarding – black rock?

Sir Dashan looks somewhat confused, but says nothing – you don think he would know. However – Aliento’s face is very different.

”The Black Stone?” he says in a horse whisper, standing from his chair, his hands in tight fists, his eyes wide, but a look of fear in them.

”This is not the same – it cannot be – and yet, by your own accounts… it would seem so!”

He is now pacing, somewhat furiously, and Anuk-su says nothing, watching him – his sudden understanding of what the stone may be seems to agree with her own private fears – but she does not say either way – content to let him share what he knows first.

”The Black Stone – this is said to be the stone of Dagoth – sometimes called Dagoth Ur – some call him a man – a great Sorcerer once named him a demon – but in either case it is said he is first worshipped in the lands north – others say he is worshipped in nations that perished long before time was recorded by the ages we know now – such lore suggests that Dagoth is called the “Dreaming God” – they say if he is awakened, his evil could destroy the world! Even so – the nation which worships him – this nation has long since been destroyed, by some great apocalypse – in all cases – be it Dagoth the Dreaming God – or Dagoth Ur – or simply Dagoth the Demon – one thing is clear – that he is one of the Old Ones – and to dabble with his power is potentially fatal – first to corrupt the mind, the flesh last – so that all life is left to you in a freakish misery – wallowing for all eternity in insanity!”

Aliento collapses into his chair, wiping his face with a rag, the room completely still.

”I am not truly studied in these matters – for the lore is mostly lost – and dangerous to pursue – even so, this stone is a mark of the god – so they say – he who possess it as a weapon, no magic shall prevail in its presence – and all that hold it shall cause any who live to suffer and go mad…”

He ponders a moment, thinking aloud –

”This is all so – and, to us – useless… Yet, if one who possessed the stone was already dead – if that one was Undead – then consider – he would be unmoved by the energy which steals life! And if the undead were fashioned from divine energy – as is likely – not arcane – then the god that granted the power of undeath would not be daunted by such power… Indeed, he may welcome it!”

Aliento is now speaking nearly inaudibly – almost to himself.

”If the stone that you spoke of was guarded by a spider? I do not know of the significance of that – even so – there is some legend that the God of Dreams was once rumored to live in a city that was aligned to spiders – but, if so – that city was lost before the stones of the first elven nation was founded… Many millennia ago – before the earth was remade by cataclysm…”

”Now – the leader of the Scarlet Wyvern is assuredly descended from the same cult that was spawned from ancient times – followers of Tar-Baphon, called the Whispering Tyrant – they seek to make themselves unto like gods – though they are demons. They are the cult we followed – and now I must say that they are aligning themselves to the undead – even as we saw in evidence thus far. Could it be that their entire purpose here was to seek the Black Stone in yon spider cave you mentioned?”

”Of a certainty Dagoth was aligned to the city of spiders, it is said… yet even so – if the stone is the one of legend, it is meanly defended – and this does not fully explain the existence of the stone flecks you found deep within the earth… Of that, I am baffled as you. No doubt the answers to these clues are made clear, if we are able to align the mystery – for surely the presence of the Black Stone was what drew the Ustalavians – was it not true that everything that they did was to seek the lands? Even to sacrifice the pure maid Dasha – did not they seek to make the sacrifice near the same pit you say held the Black Stone? Aye – it is so – and now more flecks found? Flecks that seem to hold the self-same powers of the Stone!”

He ponders this mystery somewhat –

”Aye – the black flecks are the mystery – they are no pagan idol – and I do not know their purpose – yet I would learn of it; if only to slake the need of compulsion to solve this mystery.”

He waves his hands quickly.

”I must apologize,” he says in a somewhat contrite voice.

”This evidence has been present all along – since the first day you came to this land and encountered the Ustalavians to this very day – my piecing it together like this must seem a trite condescending – yet, for myself – I find that arranging the facts in a row helps me to solve the mystery better…”

”No doubt,” Anuk-su says somewhat dryly.

”But, thou has only solved the riddle that we have so aligned – and, moreover – it seems that thy possess much detail on the old gods – it is that very detail that granted you a better solution – even so – you fail to ask the one question of note!” she adds with a somewhat haughty voice.

”Oh? And that is?” Aliento asks with a wry tone.

”Simply this – where do you think the Black Stone came from?” she retorts coldly.

OK, so seeing as i as a player have no concept of what things are worth in game, but Arsinian as a character would, I offer 50 gp a Trogg which includes those killed just by watching the walls. They don't have to go into the swamp, but if they hit the walls at night, and join the call if there is an attack, then they get paid for the troggs they kill.

RE: going back into the caves
Arsinian wants to see if he can find anyone who would have an idea about how to get back into the caves, find new ones, excavate the cave in, if other entrances can't be found, and get information about ways to handle the denizens of the caves...

TO selendria, the stuff aobut the bomb brett used was more of an example, but any sorts of bombs, explosives and mines, alchemist fire, etc could be useful.

I'll try to get on soon with rp for selendria, but can't atm...

Still didn't get that Profession: Soldier check - you have no ranks in it - but can use it untrained for now (raw wisdom check) - if you do well, you'll gain some valuable information - but this also assumes you drop one rank in it if/when you reach level 2.

Arsinian has a lot of plans about the caves for now - his plans will take some time to make work - any particular order or plan you want to have a go at?

Remember - if you plan on going into the swamp - it would be a good idea to take an escort - question is - how many?

Also - per "the rules" - if a character is on active duty for more then 8 hours in a day they end up suffering some penalties, unless they have the Endurance Feat. Just keep that in mind for your rotations of the men - hopefully the Trogs won't attack -

Did you have any other plans for the time your alternative party is out and about? If so - let me know...

we're not going to go there now, so i jsut wanted information as Arsinian has no real experience with dungerneering himself

Arsinian wants to have a report to submit about the caves and how to proceed. None of the men are on duty for more than 8 hours. They are on duty for 8, and then there are a third of the group that are to be awake and able to mobilize quickly in case of attack, but they aren't on duty.

Dire enjoys himself at Otter's but otherwise just kicks around town for maybe a day before heading out to go hunting/exploring in the nearby woods.

Dire grins a bit sheepishly, " It's not for me, would be for my family. Place they could come that might be a bit more hosptable than up aroudn Port Ice. As for me? I don't need any lands but I might build a hunting cabin around here somewhere, far enough away to be on my own but not too far away to not be of help to the area."

Dire isn't looking for anything in particular, just to see if there is a good supply of game animals, and he's always on the lookout for new and interesting places. He'd likely ask Brett if there was any place nearby to go and explore that the townsfolks want to know more about. Not a cave full of trogs mind you, just someplace to satisfy a bit of wanderlust.

Absolutely wouldn't mind Rping it out.
