Introduction

This is the Kingmaker Campaign, yet it is filled with many deviations from the boxed set. The "Campaign Information" page is meant as a quick resource to help sum up the thousands of posts quickly.

To all

1. Kae, you may have four bear skins, because there are only four bear skins left. Only one has noticeable anatomy.

2. (Mostly to Sir Bronwyn) –

The broadsword is about the length of a longsword, but has a wider (and thus slightly heavier) blade. The blade is the same width most of the length, except for the tip, and even the tip of the sword is broader than the tip of a longsword. The broadsword usually has a basket hilt to protect the wielder’s hand, but some are made without the basket hilt.

TO SIR BRONWYN SPECIFICALLY!

Bronwyn, the kobolds, especially Sylvath, await your answer regarding the question you asked them, and their reply to you. Having broached the subject, they gave your the opinion on the matter, and now wish to know your reply before you leave.

Therefore, the kobolds are going to need your reply to their request before you leave the compound. If you don't read this until later, please ret-con the answer.

Thanks!

Regarding the masterwork Breastplate: Khrovin called dibs on it, so he currently has it. Though he may relinquish it to you, if he'd like.

For expedience sake, as I am not sure when Khro will be able to post next, I am presuming he has already returned the dragon amulet to Ariarh and she is currently wearing it around her neck. Khro, if you want to play this out differently, just let me know, please.

That is already correct, as you called dibs. And, as ancient law of the Cosmos decreed on dibs "no backsies"... So you have the amulet.

The cost of which shall be deducted from your share of the Party Loot (this is currenly 2,500 GP).

This goes for any and all who wish to claim gear specifically for themselves, as opposed to leaving it in the treasurey.

While Ariarh is free to return the item to the Treasurey, as long as she has it (or Kae has his Bear Skin Cloak - once/if it is made...) the Treasurey is reduced in value, as there are less raw valueables in it.

Okay…

The party is now on the move. Everyone is content with the gear they’re taking, the spells they’ve memorized, and the ideas they’ve come up with for where they will go in the future of their fledgling village.

For while everyone may have grand ideas of what things could come in the years ahead, a certain amount of logic does rear its head. There is no village, town, or city at this time – much less a kingdom or empire.

Further; no one in the greater realms knows of the accomplishments of the heroes - yet. It will take some time to alert the general public surrounding the river kingdoms and draw their attention to the success of the heroes and their goals for the future.

Further; though the Stag Lord is dead and the bandits finished, this may only create a vacuum for new enemies to move into the recently claimed territory. Though you have legal right to own these lands, the bandits were very powerful and covered a great deal of terrain. A new enemy may elect to settle in a piece of your massively charted land mass, and declare that such a space may be “theirs” for the taking. Thus, while working on the basics of sending out word to gather new friends and allies to create a town, you may inadvertently alert people to the fact that the entire southern side of Brevoy is now held under the power and dominion of less then ten heroic people – and no matter how skilled you may be, it could be that your presence may be challenged by others, and if not outright challenged, it could be that others will wish to see how carefully you police these lands. You may find “squatters” setting up their own towns in the very places you liberated in the coming months, now that the bandits are finished.

Further; even an entire company of villagers, wealth, and buildings may fall to such mundane things as plague, famine, flood, or simply attrition with the style of government. Villagers are not necessarily loyal, and may elect to do what they please, no matter how good the government is.

However…

This is all to say that there will be some challenges above, and calls your mind to the awesome responsibility that now rests in your hands. Not only must you keep yourselves safe, but you are now responsible for the lives and livelihoods of any who would be considered your subjects.

Meanwhile:

It will take you, as mentioned before, two and half days to reach Oleg’s. To move us on formally into “book 2” I intend to fast-forward to Oleg’s quickly. Tonight is your chance to Social RP with your party about your plans for the above mentioned issues. Tomorrow (in real time) you will arrive at Oleg’s. Let me know what you plan to do between now and then; not only plans, but social RP.

You arrive at Oleg’s tomorrow (real time) – and this will formally be the 11th or 12th of Neth, depending on your speed and decisions between now and then. Once you reach Oleg’s tomorrow, I will advise you on what happens next. Feel free to do any social RP at this time.

In response to the above questions/statements.

1. Brett will stop off at the guard house by the river; he is examining it to see if there are any problems such as bandits that may have come by later and left other little surprises. Even before you set out for this place, he had already asked the kobolds to bring the wagon here while you went to Oleg and take the majority of the things of value, leaving only a small amount of wood for your return, as well as a few foodstuffs for your return with whoever can come with you from Oleg’s.

2. Brett will make several copies of the ”Letter’s of Marquee” and keep them on his person. He fully intends to recruit a few of the people at Oleg’s into training with him on specific issues and some of his ideas.

3. Brett is preparing several letters to be left at Oleg’s during the evening to be dispatched to his own people, as soon as Oleg can find a messenger during the winter months. Brett hopes that by springtime, when the snows are melted, that he will be able to have more trusty folk coming from his own homelands to help populate the village you are founding.

4. Brett is preparing a letter to be sent specifically to his formal lord the Duke Esserian - to let the Duke know what he and his allies have accomplished. Brett does not know what help the Duke can offer, but believes it may be useful at this time.

5. Brett will pose the following question to the group at this time:

”Well mates, I be getting a question fer ye on Oleg. All this work be doing be helpful to us, and it be making him right rich and so on. Now, ain’t nay harm in that, but it do be opening the door on what be happening to him later down the road, as it were.”

”As it is now, he be a merchant on a road – nothing too fancy, but it may be that in a few years or so, as we grow up strong, then he grow up strong too. He got his own land proper, and it be his; fair and good. I ain’t saying we take it from him, but if we buy his land, or buy him out, or whatever ye want to call it; then he can be a “mayor” of the land that belong to him anyhow, as opposed to just a lad who is like a “Squire” – a bit o’ gentry on his own land, with some guards there to protect him on behalf o’ some Brevoy nobleman.”

”I be right glad the guards helping Oleg, but I see it as risky in the long run. As Oleg’s land gets nicer, the Brevoy folk may want a bigger piece of it; and have a fair claim to it to, as they got some help in keeping it safe. I’d rather it be us that keep it safe, and he work fer us direct. If he be independent – why, any who done want to steal his land can do so. We got no claim on it to help him, unless he asks, and that can be right expensive. Further; what’s to say he don’t ask. Not that I think he’d do something dodgy, but what if, gods forbid, down the line he gets chopped? Then who takes over? I be thinking that taking him under our protection formal be a good thing – though it may seem a bit, er… well, maybe not as genial as ye all may like it. But it just be a suggestion; if a village crops up at Oleg, they be his own to deal with. I’d rather him be with us formal then an independent. Say we ask him to join us, offer him something, cut a deal? What do ye say?

Brett realizes that his idea seems a little mercenary and somewhat controlling, but on the other hand, there is some sense to it. If Oleg is a good neighbor, then that is a good thing. But if he builds up a good thing on his land, and turns sour? Perhaps it would be better to secure his alliagence formally now, before he is bribed or threatened by northern nobles, or others…

Still, the choice is up to you. Brett suspects that everyone will have their opinions and will not be surprised if this raises some important political questions right away on how to proceed.

”Sir! Party needs to deal with important issue even as Book is finished and Social RP out how to solve the problem!”

Good… Our first catch… er… quest… of the day!

Male Human Cavalier 3

Bronwyn humbly answers the kobolds:

I have squired for a great honorable knight by the name of Sir Ivan Petrov. He was a kind and dedicated man, but those same qualities blinded him for the wretch that was his son. He died before granting me knighthood, and as such I'm still a lowly squire.

He inhales heavily, looking up and trying to shape his thoughts into words.

And as I'm bound by honor to speak the truth in all matters, I have to confess I really didn't care much for the gods before. All I achieved, be it good or evil, was won by the actions of good and bad men. But ever since arriving in these lands I cannot help but feel the eyes and hands of the gods in our path, and I now believe they have a purpose for me. Alas I'm a simple man and know nothing in the ways of the gods, only honor and respect. I hope those can pave the road to true devotion, but I know I still have a long travel ahead.

The knight looks back on the kobold.

I ask of you that you teach me about the gods and the way to properly honor them. I ask that you show me what it is to live on the path of devotion, honor and dedication. Show me your way; I hope it resonates with my soul and what I feel.

My posting may be sporadic over the next few days. Lots of stuff going on irl and internet access is spotty. Thanks for the patience.

Sylvath stares hard at Bronwyn... watching him closely, appraising everything about him intently.

"All of that 'tis well and good, no doubt. Yet thou hast not answered my question in a way that is clear. I must make such a demand for clarity unto thee, for once accepting of the decision, there can be no deviation from the course until thy see it through. None of our folk would take on the role of becoming one unto like us lightly, yet - having accepted it - they would not cast it aside if the burden feels too great."

"Therefore, I ask thee plain, then; will thy walk our path under our tuterlage, or shall thee rather elect to simply learn lore and knowledge? It is a hard question, for if thou would walk our path we shall train thee - but once thy have chosen it, we shall not suffer lightly one who puts it aside if the burden grows too great."

Sylvath continues to stare at Bronwyn for a time.

"This may be a hard question for thee... Take then the time to consider it, and when thou art ready in true, then answer me and my brethern all the better," he adds the last.

Bronwyn, if you aren't sure how to answer at this time, no worries. You can answer him when you get back from Oleg. Basically he is asking if you just want to learn a bit about his people, or if you want to be trained like one of their knights with the kobolds as your instructors.

Wait, so are the Kobolds waiting out the winter at the Bridge camp, or staying in the fortress? cause it now looks like they'll be at the river-guard...

On the road and sobered up, Ka'etil listens to Brett's thoughts about Oleg. "Well, He's been a back-woods trades-man for a while, and this community that seems to have sprung up around him is a new development. That said, It seems as good a place as any to begin to settle, and a good set-up. If he is willing, we may be able to offer him Mayor-ship if he is willing to join our collective, affording himself the support and strength we have to offer."

"Honestly, if he has been a good friend to us so far, he may take kindly to establishing something stable, and when he is tired of Politicing, he'll have a place to retire and relax, his family will be safe, and he's already running a village as it is. This way he'll be more of a leader in position as opposed to a generous man opening his doors to strangers, and potentially being taken advantage of..." Kae says. "We could use that logic to sell the idea to him."

The kobolds are formally staying in the rock "fortress" you found. They are sending out two of their folk with the wagon to the bridge, to load up all the gear the bandits left there - the wood, the food, the supplies and so forth - and bring it all back to the fortress. The only thing Brett would recommend leaving behind is some rather usefull, but fairly valueless things; namely a bunch of the firewood that is cut, and some basic foodstuffs for whoever in the party comes back, in case they are comming back from Oleg with less food then they need.

OK, Kae supports leaving a benchmark at the River-guard so we can swing there and have some supplies there.

Upon her return to Oleg's, Ariarh will pen a letter to her parents in Artume, telling them news of her personal welfare, the group's successes, the future establishment of Saravale and her new found feelings for Khrovin. She would also gauge their interest in re-establishing themselves in this new, future township. She will leave the letter with Oleg until a messenger can be hired and the letter dispatched.

Ry will also seek a word with the females she met (and had a rapport with) from the travelling caravan, especially Lily Banks, Selendria Grear and Patty Ironhorse. This discussion could include Svetlana and Dasha, as well.
*
Pondering the ideas voiced by both Brett and Kae, Ry adds her own voice to the discussion.

"Oleg has been an ally since the very beginning. It is best we approach him with the details of what we mean to do with this new township and the kind of people we seek to reside and work within it. We could speak of the Mayoral position and wait to hear if he has any thoughts on the matter. Mayhap, delicacy in approach with Oleg is the preferable option, in the hopes of minimising any misgivings and suspicion. Freewill and its sanctity is something we should represent. We cannot make Oleg feel as if we are coercing him into selling his land to us. I would be open to asking him if he would join us but I will not be privy to any heavy-handling of the matter, not that I feel any of us would actually do that."

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

A conversation re policing the lands and ensuring squatters or bandits/bandit lords don't take over our claimed territory. Khrovin and any other riding close to Ariarh will be privy to this.

"Once we get back to the trading post, perhaps we can explain the situation we find ourselves in and enlist capable people as border outpost guards or some such. Of course, we would need to find people to build the outposts first. And, Kae, Bronwyn or Brett could train them, if necessary, or perhaps one of the other travellers currently camped for the winter could undertake the training on our behalf. Least it gives us eyes across our land. We could mark the territory with posts and decrees proclaiming our ownership, but what will stop these people from tearing down the proclamations and settling there anyway. It seems we may require actual bodies willing to patrol and defend our territory. I'm certainly not the most knowledgeable when it these matters, so I am willing to defer to those more skilled in the protection of territories and borders. It would be good to include Hank Ironhorse in the conversation -- he seemed like someone who would be helpful in such matters."

Male Half-Elf Invulnerable Rager 2/Crossblooded Envenomed+Draconic Sorcerer 1/ Trapper Ranger 1/Rage-Vivisectionist 2/Dragon Disciple 1

"I wouldn't dream of being heavy handed with Oleg either, Ry. We need to sell the idea to him, make it a good deal for him, set us a situation where it is in his best interests to join us and have him actually want to of his own accord. That said a little Cajoling may not hurt our chances," Kae glances at Alaric, "Never hurts to have someone who's slick at "speechafying" presenting one's case." He gives Alaric a concerned look with a smile that seems to say I know we won't have to worry about that ring and its spirit in this situation, but be aware of it. "to take a word out of Brett's lexicon."

"And in terms of settling our lands, Guards and boarder-patrols will be good, but we should offer a message of welcoming and protection. Remind people that these are dangerous lands, and without the Stag-Lord, there are sure to be ruffians and brigands who come to take his place, But we WILL protect our own." His face turns grim as he says, "And we let it also be known that any who seek to take teh Stag-Lords place will meet the same fate as him." his features soften, and he ponders a moment, scratching his head,""Well, a similar fate... I don't anticipate most bandits being killed for diabolic sacrifices... but you get what I mean. We should probably keep that detail of the encounter close to the vest, mention that we "defeated" the stag-lord, AND a Devil. Nobody to contradict us, on that one, right? and not too dishonest."

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

"You may be right about sending in Alaric to have a sweet word with Oleg. Oleg respects Alaric and therefore our charming sorcerer may be able to successfully address any concerns the proprietor may have." Ry notices the look Kae casts Alaric's way but can only hazard a guess at the meaning of it.

"I agree about the positive message we should offer folk. I do not mind saying we defeated the Stag Lord and the Devil if it gives people confidence in who we are and what we are about. In essence, our presence did facilitate the death of the Stag Lord, even if it was not perpetrated by any hand in our party. If we keep to the facts and do not get carried away in the heroic tale then I will be content. If the story grows out of hand and it looks like we are being dishonest or have been, it will affect our ability to forge a new kingdom as people will not have ongoing faith in us; we'd be just like any other ruler."

Ry looks at Kae and continues on a secondary thought, "There is so much to oversee and if we can organise some border patrols, it will benefit us in the long run, I believe. Brett was right when he said that it can be a difficult task to uphold justice, faith, land ownership and alike with just ten heroic souls. It would seem reasonable to expect someone to challenge us at some point. We must strengthen our numbers, my friend." Ariarh's expression is a determined one.

Male Half-Elf Invulnerable Rager 2/Crossblooded Envenomed+Draconic Sorcerer 1/ Trapper Ranger 1/Rage-Vivisectionist 2/Dragon Disciple 1

"Indeed. I'd not be surprised tho, if at least the early settlers will be willing to assist us in that. We'll be giving their families a safe place to stay, so it's n their interests to keep the place safe for their families. If we give people a good deal and unify our interests, then we are likely to have greater success."

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

"If I remember rightly of the last conversation Alaric had with the travellers, Grear in particular, it may not be as easy as we think to get the travellers onboard. We will have to be thorough and have preliminary plans prepared to share with them. They are looking for practical leaders, in my opinion, and so we must give them that."

Male Half-Elf Invulnerable Rager 2/Crossblooded Envenomed+Draconic Sorcerer 1/ Trapper Ranger 1/Rage-Vivisectionist 2/Dragon Disciple 1

"Yes, we do need to devise a solid plan, and there is much to think about. We can't expect people to follow us blindly, if we don't know where we are going."

Will be thinking about plans, today, but in character input would be awesome if anyone reads this...

I agree with Kae completely in this matter; in character input would be good.

So far; we have lots of ideas from both Ariarh and Ka'etil. I know many of you guys may be busy now, but a little shout from ya'll on what you want done could be nice.

Either way, Kae and Ry can look forward to a little bonus XP from the back and forth right now, which is good, and anyone else who wants to join in also we're all ears.

I need to leave for work now, but when I get home I am eager to see the opinions of some of the others, too.

That said; you guys have a good day.

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

"Indeed, we have to give them more than we have this large fortress which can house many families and we hope you can join us and form a new town. These people have seen much chaos in their travels and we need to provide them with a sense of security and stability, and a practical plan of what we hope to accomplish and by when. Grand ideas are all well and good but there must be evident follow through. Once the kobolds can map out the fortress and catalogue repairs and such, we can start working on creating a viable infrastructure and community. If we can get others to invest in this plan, then perhaps we will have an earnest workforce to undertake the building with us. All hands in. That way people gain a sense of being a part of something greater than themselves. It could aid us in gaining and retaining loyalty."

Male Human Cleric 3/Paladin 1

Khrovin listens intently to all of the discussion about guards and the border patrol, agreeing with the idea of the guards, and most certainly seeing that they could be a useful resource for a warning system for the towns and other settlements that we wish to make one day. That the demonic presence was actually what killed the Stag Lord was in its own right little to write home about really, for the end result that had been wanted was achieved.

More research was needed as to why the demon was summoned, and whether there were specific weapons that might be of greater use to one who would fight the demons.

The only thing that he would not stand for was deception of the people however. They had not been the ones who had killed the Stag Lord, although the argument that their presence had killed him was an intriguing one.

In the meantime, his personal plan was to write to Anor, continue his suit with Ariarh, and make the bows that he had promised both Bronwyn and Kae.

Male Half-Elf Invulnerable Rager 2/Crossblooded Envenomed+Draconic Sorcerer 1/ Trapper Ranger 1/Rage-Vivisectionist 2/Dragon Disciple 1

"During my travels establishing myself after I left the forest, I did mercenary work. Now, getting sell-swords to work for you is all about having the best offer. Not that I expect the people at Oleg's will be so mercenary, but it makes sense to be the best deal in town, and i'd say we want to be on principle, anyway."

Ka'etil outlines his suggestion to ensure that those with some experience in settlements will back us, and bring more people to join us, "Anyone interested will be offered training so they can better defend themselves, even if it is just some instruction so they can Practice fighting while chopping wood, or reaping grain, making every minute of work count to ensuring those who settle here first are able to defend themselves in the initial phases of settlement."

"Housing and basic supplies will be provided best as we can to those to first arrive until we get some infrastructure set up. We'll populate our fortress first and start with farming, come spring. In order to protect their families, we can offer to arm any willing man, or capable woman, come to think of it, and train them, to form our guard, and put them on shifts that allow them to spend time home with their families and work their land as needed, devoting the smallest portion of their day as necessary. These people will be our boarder patrol, and their task will be to keep watch, and make patrols, riding back if a threat approaches, allowing us to mobilize the Professional Guard."

"This Guard will get free room-and-board and a stipend to live on. While on duty we will arm them, spend days drilling and training as Sir Bronwyn sees fit, and should our Watch alert them of a threat, they shall be able to ride out to meet it. Along with any of us who are able, of course."

Looking around at the group, Ka'etil asks, "What do you think? I feel that with a solid defense plan, and promise to take care of those who devote themselves to the protection of our people, and make people feel safe with us."

Knowing that there is more to settlement than just defending it, but not knowing much about that, Kae asks, "So what do we have to offer the people in terms of justice, fairness and such? I feel like we can take care of safety, but the rest is jsut as important, and not really my area of expertese..."

Regrettably, Alaric is unable to post as he is having trouble with both internet and computer. He has therefore asked me to give him a hand in posting what he would say when you reach Oleg’s tonight. As I have now received everyone’s plans and ideas for what they intend to do, we shall fast-forward a few days to Oelg’s.

The days had grown cold again, so much so that you could feel the chilly air biting into you even under the noonday sun. And the evenings were worse, for the snow drifts were treacherous with glazing of newly formed ice that had crystallized in the failing light of the last rays of twilight.

Arriving at Oleg’s you see the tall bastion of the squat looking tower jutting over the plains like a stubby finger. There are thin streams of smoke rising from the compound, and you would guess that cooking fires have been prepared.

As you ride up to the wide area you see that the place looks hardly worse for wear then when you left it; the wagons of the caravan are still there, as well as the tents which are pitched nearby the wagons.

Though it may have seemed like months have passed, really it has only been a few days – barely a week since you set out. Roughly half a mile from your destination you see outriders tacking their course to you and moving hard in quickly. You recognize them at once, and they you, for they are still under orders from “Commander” William Tinker.

The outriders (Chris Cheval and Rand Davis) both greet you well, and when they have heard news that the Stag Lord is finished and his soldiers are slain, they are well pleased and insist on escorting you back to the compound to deliver you – and the news – with a proper welcome.

You learn from them on the trot in that things have been fairly dull and rather routine. The caravan considered heading north, but there was a light falling of snow two days ago which dissuaded them, and they are now waiting in Oleg’s for a bit longer. They have no particular plans for Brevoy, and no place to set up a proper camp in any event, once they get there, and the journey is at least a week. They had hoped the weather would clear up, but it hadn’t; and they had resolved to travel north formally as soon as the grounds had dried out a piece, or at least in the next few days.

Upon arriving you discover that some of the men have been talking to Oleg about plans for travel, and he is happy to help, but you can tell he is feeling rather pressured at this time. He doesn’t know what to do with your gear, with so many mouths to feed (he is, after all, a shop keeper, not a formal “lord” – no matter what the Brevoyan soldiers may have called him) and is no doubt feeling a bit overwhelmed.

You discover that Henry, or “Hank” Ironhorse has gone hunting with Drake. However, Sarah, Chris, and Will have also gone on their own hunting expedition. They left at dawn and are most likely going after elk, or so they said.

The others are all there – and they all gather around to great you when you come in. Though each of them have been working on their own tasks, it seems clear that they are all eager to cheer your success on, and meet the new friends you have returned with.

Female Aasimar Druid 7 (Noble)

Retconned with Kae and any other who is involved in the conversation.

"Kae, I like your suggestions in regard to training, wages and housing. I also think the inclusion of the womenfolk in the guard training is wise as we would have a greater skill base to work with."

"If we set up outposts patrolling the borders we also need to set up an effective line of communication between the outposts and ourselves."

"In regard to setting up a system for justice and fairness, we may need to appoint a lawman and some deputies, and, I, in my ambassadorial position, could be the person people initially come to with their concerns and I would mediate and be the go-between in such affairs. I still haven't formed concrete plans in regard to my full responsibilities but I offer my service to the people in terms of adjudicating on justice and fairness."

"We also need to be able to feed our "township", especially over this winter season. Since we have no established farms or crops at this time, we cannot allow people to starve. We could put together a group of hunters who's primary purpose is to ensure that there is food in stock to feed the people."

Male Human Cleric 3/Paladin 1

Khrovin will gently kiss Ariarh and mention to her that he will go and take care of both of their horses. Mentioning that she might be better helping with the rest of the group to get lodgings and perhaps work through the state of affairs with Oleg. He means well, after the long days riding he wants nothing less than for Ariarh to get some rest and sleep. He keeps to himself for a little while, taking care of the little things, polishing saddles and such like. He feels a little out of place with the proceedings as the party reunites with the rest of the party.

Where can I sit and work on the bows? I believe that I already know just how to get the mechanical draw weight into the bows.

He finds the right spot and begins slowly crafting. Listening all the time to the hubbub around him, and checking often to see where Ariarh is.

Conversation with Sylvath:

The knight looks on the snowy horizon and says.

The winter will be long and full of work. We shall be forging a city, and maybe even more than that, a nation. I would also offer myself as ore for your forge, brave Sylvath.

Bronwyn kneels before the silvered leader.

Forge me into a shield to defend our people and a blade to defeat our enemies. Let me walk in your path and follow your ways. I offer myself in servitude until such time you recognize I'm worthy of the title of sir and all that this entails.

Bron smiles as Kae'til talks.

You are wiser than you give yourself credit for, Kae. That's a sensible and intelligent idea.

We would do well to talk to Oleg and other inhabitants of this area. There should be many hunter cabins spread across the land, and employing these folk will provide them with a steady income annd security for their families and provide us with intelligence on the area and expert hunters. We would do well to offer them housing and pay. They could integrate in the border patrols, serving as captains to the less-trained men.

If we get a good enough number of settlers for the land, we should form up a third body of armed forces. The reason for this is that we'll need people walking the streets and preventing petty crime, such as theft or assault. Soldiers are terribly ill-suited for that; they are trained to fight an enemy and kill with efficience, not disrupt bar-room brawls and catch cutpurses. This City Watch should receive a stipend, but not necessarily housing in the fort. I'd rather reserve that space for our soldiers proper.

After watching you all for a moment with some version of fanfare and seeing no specific enthusiasm or response, they clap, offer a few cheers, and then Oleg presents you all a round of drinks for your return.

Mention of the destruction of the Stag Lord and his minions seem to have pleased the people there; not the least Oleg, for he despised the villain and his minions.

Brett and Alaric turns to you all, watching you stand around looking at the folk, though none of you speaking to any of them directly. Then, Brett and Alaric head inside Oleg’s, taking the rather rotund man by his arm and lead him inside to chat. Anuk-su accompanies Alaric with a sense of purpose, though she pauses to give a courteous bow to the Ustalvians who stand there looking on.

You can see that Aliento’s eyes widen in surprise at her presence, then narrow coolly, and he whispers something to Sir Dashan, who looks surprised and nods.

Seeing that the group is content to stand and smile; waving at them and occasionally drink a drink, the caravan and outriders will begin to disperse and let you bask in the remains of their warming glow.

Ry warmly thanks Khro for his consideration in taking care of Tal in conjunction with his own horse. She also enjoys the affection of the kiss. Her eyes grow more brilliant after the kiss and she smiles sweetly at him and watches as he makes his way toward the stable. Dior is still sitting atop Tal's saddle, so it seemed her griffon would be spending time with Khro and she didn't mind it. "Khro, I will come and find you after I have seen and spoken to the travellers and maybe even Dasha." Ry bestows him another smile and begins walking around the courtyard, randomly chatting with folk she encounters and seeking either the Mistresses Patty, Lily or Selendria. Ry stretches her arms over her head and flexes her sore muscles. At some point, they would all need to get some rest and perhaps a bath ... Indeed, Ry needed to wash this days' worth of grime from her person. But conversations had to be had first, then perhaps some letter writing and then some free time, if they were lucky.

Ka'etil is entirely unused to fan-fair and cheering at his presence, so he puts on a polite smile and waves at people unsure of what he should to in response to this excited reception.

As Bronwyn heads off, Kae waves at him, "Say hello to the folks for me," even tho he's never met them. The Crowd thins slightly, and he finds his confidence and hops off his horse, then grins. The sound of Knrovan's flute floats into his ears, and he steps toward Dashan and Aliento, with a bounce in his step.

Khrovin's own smile grew wider at the fact that Ariarh slipped back so easily among the people at the trading post.

She would do well as the queen of this place, and yet something tells me that Alaric will take the role of King. I will not cede Ariarh to him. Although is it possible that I might be a better man to lead these lands than he? Nay, that is a treasonous thought, I should cast it from my mind.

The horses were soon well looked after, and just as the party begins to wind down, the flute once more comes out and Khrovin performs as best as he can to raise spirits further. He throws himself a little more into the music than normal, seeking to instil comfort and security and the feeling of what it is to love someone into the music.

He wonders what the world might have in store for him and his friends in the future, and the challenges that they might face.

Sir Dashan nods his head politely, a friendly smile on his face.

”We are well pleased with thy victory; friend. Yet we are assigned here by our own lord to discover the nature of why the Baron Romanov has sent his minions into this land. Therefore, we shall be forced to act on this quest.”

”Indeed,” Aliento says dryly.

”Our lord has decreed that we should follow the Baron, but we must find his purpose in these lands. We believed it was to discover the existence and nature of the good child Dasha – yet methinks there is more then that. I should believe there to be no more then that; but I sense that we are not correct in that assumption.”

Sir Dashan turns to Aliento, his smile less friendly.

”Peace, brother; we may yet speak of these things – yet I should ask thee to do so in private. I do not mistrust these folk; yet I believe it is our solemn duty to protect our lord’s confidence.”

Aliento stifles a frustrated sigh.

”Indeed, sir. I apologize; yes. We could speak more of these things later,” he says turning to Ka’etil ”Or, if you would rather – we could adjourn to my tent and we three speak of these matters now? What say you; I would learn of your opinions on these matters,” Aliento adds.

Kae, you almost miss it, but the way he slightly accented “your” opinions gives you slight pause, and a reason to suspect that the calculating Aliento believes that there is something specific or particular about what you personally can reveal that your comrades may not…

"Well met, Mistress Lily!" Ariarh cheerfully smiles at the Holbyt woman and embraces her. "I thought to come by to see how you and your family have been this past week? Has anything of note come to pass in our absence?"

Lily leans back from the embrace somewhat and smiles warmly at Ry, her neat hair in a tight bun, and her matronly frame ensconced in heavy furs. You see that her clothes are well stitched and she seems relatively well fed; clearly the snow and hard weather have done her no worse for wear.

”Well, we be doing good as can be – there were some worry when ye left, about the chance o’ more nasties crawling about, like that bleeding ettin that yer friends put down. But as long as we stay close to the compound we’ve not seen any trouble. The men folk have gone off fer a spell to do some hunting, and the young’ns are about – rode off to do their own bit o’ mischief, as it were. No doubt they’ll be back soon, what with the weather and the nightfall coming and all.”

Taking Ry by the arm Lily leads her up to the steps of the wagon and leads Ariarh in the door. The inside is nice and warm and you see little Peaches sleeping comfortably in a bed – napping it seems. The tiny stove has a kettle nearby and she soon has poured two tins of tea and offers one to Ariarh.

The smell of cloves and honey permeates from the tea, and it smells very seasonal and tasty as you sip it down.

”Truth to tell, I be eager to move on. The lads here be thinking the same, but we be worried on things. The way to Brevoy be a week long, and that assume the weather holds and no more nasties from the north. We’d even be staying here, if we may, as the weather is a bit chilly and the stores won’t last all winter. And though the wagons be nice and snug, I’d rather have a place to bed down.”

She takes a gulp of the tea and puts it down, then slices some bread, and places it on a metal prong; beginning to toast it over the stove.

”Winter be coming, and if we get to Brevoy we need a solid place to set up a camp. I think, too, that it be nice to find our own place, as it were… When we get there we may find a place near a village, and have to pay coin fer it, and we have to pay fer rations. Oleg be more then a fair man; he treat us right well, on yer say-so I reckon.”

She takes a small plate and put the now toasted bread on it, and then slides a thin knife into a clay jar, and smears a wide stripe of some type of jam on it.

”Care fer a slice?” she asks Ariarh politely, and will give you some toast with what tastes like a very sweet blueberry jam.

Delicious! If you try it…

” But we need to move on – find a place to settle down, and soon; before winter comes. Now the bandits be gone, I’d even ask if ye could set up around here, maybe. Ye know, the lads could even be building some wood cabins or cottages. Could take a few weeks, but they could be done soon, provided ye could get Oleg to agree. Or we could move on… Either way, we need something more permanent – more stable, as it were. If we all stay, can ye put in a good word fer Oleg? That is; if we can set up something more solid here, I say we do it. But we need something better then wagons if the snows come, eh? If not, we’ll need to move on soon… most likely in the next day or so, when the snows finally melt away – hopefully.”

She adds the last and takes a bite out of the toast, munching happily, awaiting a response from Ariarh.

To Kae and Khrovin

”Excellent notion, my friend,” Sir Dashan says warmly at the thought of conducting the interview with both Ka’etil and Khrovin even as Aliento smiles tersely, an appraising look gifted to Khrovin.

”Good, let us adjourn to our tent, then,” Sir Dashan adds, turning to lead you to the tent of the Ustalavian's even as you both follow him, Aliento trailing behind you two, watching you each from under the low shade of his hood; his eyes glinting curiously.

When you enter the heavy confines of the tent you are surprised to see the richness of the place, as neither of you had entered it before.

A well crafted suit of plate mail is held erect on a display, and there are heavy rugs on the ground, with thick flags and hanging tapestries dangling from spears around the tent. A desk and two folding chairs sit by it, and a tall pole with a silver lamp dangling from it give light to you as you enter.

There are what looks like cots and heavy blankets, and some small chests.

Sir Dashan gestures to the carpets, and you all make yourself comfortable on low pillows. The two chairs are not enough for all of you, and he does not seem interested in sitting in a chair while his guests sit on the floor.

”Before we continue in these proceedings, it is only right and fair to ask thee who thy companion is. For though we know thy quality, having seen it on the field and in the proof of thy allies, I would know more of he who travels with thee before I divulge the information on what we would speak,” Sir Dashan says cordially, yet it does not disguise the fact that now that he is in his element, his manners are veiled with caution at the new arrival.

Aliento looks on, his eyes watching you both from under his hood.

You notice that though both men are wearing heavy cloaks, they are also armed with long blades. Aliento is clearly wearing a elven weapon – curved and well used. Sir Dashan has his hand resting on the hilt of his great sword, and you can see the scabbard is covered by ancient runes of both power and majesty.

”Indeed, yes… I would know more of this one as well – as well as all of your new companions. Even those not yet introduced… When you have time, perhaps you will acquaint us also with the new ward of the good master Alaric, as well. Sadly, she seems to be – for the time – closeted with the good master Oleg while they discuss personal matters. But yes; we must have proper introductions for all,” Aliento adds with a thin smile.

Sir Dashan looks at his comrade and digests this news.

”Indeed, yes! Introductions should be made. Tell us then, friend; what is thy name, thy profession; thy lord? And how did thee fall in with these goodly people?” Sir Dashan asks, his tone guileless and his questions seeming both eager and genuine.

Ka'etil lounges among the cushions, smiling at the lavish surroundings. "Ah, but of course.," Kae says with a wry smile. "This is Khrovan... um... Khrovan, Holy Knight of Erastil. He was beset by bandits on out way to face the Stag Lord when we found him. He's been a great help, as both a healer and a surprisingly fierce warrior. Ry ponders Lily's words on her family and the others moving on from Oleg's. She takes the initiative on behalf of her companions to broach the subject of the Stag Lord's prior residence whilst sipping on her tea and nibbling on the toast and delicious blueberry jam.

"Mistress Lily, our party has recently come into possession of the Stag Lord's fortress. We have plans to forge a settlement there and we hope to conduct a conversation with all the travellers later this evening as soon as everyone has returned to the trading post. How would you feel if I asked if you and your family would like to make a home at the fortress? We require good, hardworking, skilled people, and I believe not only can the fortress serve as a home to you and your kin, it can provide the security, protection and community you seek for your family. It could be a new beginning for your family. For all of us. As I mentioned, our party hopes to cover more information in a group discussion later this day, but I wanted to mention something to you beforehand, and possibly to the Mistresses Patty and Selendria, as well. What do you think, Mistress Lily? Would you consider coming back with us to the Fortress and making a new start? I know this decision is not one you can make on your own and that you must speak with your folk. I would just like to respectfully gauge your feelings on this matter at the present time." Ry looks sincerely at the Holbyt woman, hoping she was not being pushy by asking, but excited at the prospect of people like Lily and her family joining them at the Fortress and building a community.

Khrovin looks slightly bashful at this praise that has been heaped upon him. What he did with the dispatching of the devil and the like he did because it was required. For him it has been as natural as breathing. That Kae had taken so little of the credit for himself was strange, for if Kae had not been flanking the devil on many occasions, using his talents to distract the creature, then many of Khrovin's mighty swings would not have hit. The slaying of the Stag Lord and the demon were a joint effort, and none of us could have done it without the rest of us. Truly the sum of our skills was greater than the individual parts. I fight well, and have some skill with healing, be the source magical or through the use of common herbs and the like. With weapons I am skilled with the sword and the bow, although my sword work needs much practise

Khrovin stands tall once more, and simply states with a smile Have you any other questions?

At this statement, the two Ustalavians stiffen somewhat. They turn to look at each other; and speak briefly and in a foreign tongue you cannot discern. You can see Sir Dashan’s eyes are cold and dark, and Aliento’s eyes are gleaming with a chill light from under his hood.

The talk is brief, then Aliento holds up his hand, as if cautioning something, at which point Sir Dashan nods once.

They turn back to you; Sir Dashan’s face is dark and grim, but Aliento’s face is now cordial and his gaze svelte.

”Well met, paladin of Erastil – follower of he is called the Deadeye – crafter of the bow, and the Huntsman. We do salute you for your noble virtue and as a knight we do praise you for your courage and true heart,” Aliento says with a smooth and soft voice.

”It is no mean feat to banish a devil – that this was accomplished is worthy of high praise,” Aliento says with a polite smile ”and for this we honor you – both of you. May the light of Phrasama keep you both,” he adds with a light bow.

Dashan looks back and forth, his fingers tight on the hilt of his sword, yet he has said nothing.

”Your pardon, my friend, we are troubled with matters given to us by our own lord – we may not speak of them to thee, and ask thee then for pardon on this. Further, we ask thee to trust that we are aligned to the same purpose; and that is the elimination of evil to all goodly folk,” Dashan sayd finally, his voice tight.

”That they have summoned a devil – a creature from the Inferno, this bodes ill; yet it is not the first time we have witnessed such dark things that converge on your company, I am afraid.”

Sir Dashan pauses, looking to Aliento, who nods once, offering some encouragement.

The young man lets out a sigh, then continues briskly.

”Shortly before when thy companions first met with mine own we did espy a lady with thee – a priestess, also of Erastil. She spoke of fine things and high ideals, yet her very spirit were touched with corruption. She was, as it were, possessed by a thing of darkness. A nameless evil that reaches far back from places beyond the gods – of it we shall say no more. Yet she was possessed with foul evil.”

”We learned later that she had died during combat and was later raised. Yet after that, she was possessed and driven by dark things – more foul then even dark gods; who though evil are yet divine. Nay, she was darkly possessed.”

”Further, she was raised at a place, a very temple to Erastil; yet it was also revealed to us that the former temple had been debased, profaned, as it were, by a fallen priest of the great god Erastil himself. This same priest haunted the land, for he had become corrupted and fallen, and remained in the form of a dark creature; an undead monster who used foul necromancy to raise warriors to aid him in battle.”

”He was destroyed, as well as his mendicants – yet even so; this same maid who traveled with thy companions now – the same maid who first met with the foul warrior who served under the dominion of the Baron who my lord stands opposed to and challenged him – it has left us in grave concern.”

Sir Dashan pauses as if to collect his thoughts, but Aliento interrupts, speaking quickly and directly.

”A man from Ustalav came to Oleg’s. He searched for the girl Dasha, and the maid called “Hermia” confronted him. Yet through her confrontation, be it coincidence or deliberate, he was able to escape the compound and find the girl Dasha. Then, when your friends rode to save the girl; she insisted on going and was killed by this man – she alone perishing in the fight – as if he singled her out? Then, her body was taken to a temple of Erastil, a place guarded by undead who had chosen to turn their back on their god; and at this place she was revived. Then, the same maid forsook her allies, took a magical bow for her own from all the gear the party retrieved from the temple – the bow belonging to the very same undead priest the companions defeated – and left to return to the temple.”

He stares at you intently.

”Yet this very same maid had marks on her, and a curse on her that aligned her to foul things from beyond the time of the gods…”

Aliento stares at you for a moment, gauging your reaction.

”Do you not see a cause for our concern? That one of your companions – a priest of Erastil, should be bound to so many dark designs, and disappeared into the wilderness taking with her only one thing of note – a magical bow retrieved from the body of an undead fallen priest to Erastil? And now, from the wilderness, unlooked for is another priest of Erastil?”

Sir Dashan shakes his head, as if he is having trouble with this information.

”It cannot be as thou suggest…” he says, his voice laced with doubt.

”I suggest nothing, brother… I only give facts. We don’t know the companion who they ride with, not fully. And we must be in all things cautious. Finally, defeating a devil is a great thing; but consider this – is it not more evidence that the Baron is more closely aligned himself to that dark cult so long passed? Could the Scarlet Brotherhood be yet raising its head again? No, I spoke facts; and more facts I would have. We must know these two better, and all their companions, before we can prepare a proper report. But my heart tells me that though they have done a great thing, that we have many more questions… And my heart also tells me that there will be further troubles from the domains of Erastil….”

Aliento pauses, then takes a cup, and shakes it back and forth in his hand, his eyes fluttering for a moment, then tosses the pieces on the rug before him.

”There – you see? The bones do not lie…” he says with a grim whisper, pointing to bones that lie upon the rug.

”We shall have trials yet with a Priest of Erastil…” he adds looking up at you.

”I do not know who this is; but I have seen the signs for six days now, and I am afraid of what I see. We must be cautious… for I do not yet know who the priest of Erastil that we should contest is; I only know that we should be cautious… of any with that mantel,” he ends with a grim voice.

I will also refrain from spell casting of any kind if they so wish it, up to and including the channelling of my dear Erastil's power. The only thing I will have to do with a weapon is to finish the bow that I have been making for Kae.

Your concerns are indeed valid, and I believe the extreme measures that I have offered freely are therefore warranted. I know a little of the cleric that came before me, although very little has really been told other than that she left in bad circumstances.

In the meantime, what can you tell me about this Scarlet Brotherhood? Is there anything that I can do to help research the way to destroy them once more, but so completely that they can never rise once more.

Khrovin completes what he was saying before offering his weapons first to Kae and then to the Lord Aliento. Once one of them takes the weapons, he will begin to remove his armour, once piece at a time, handing it once again to either Kae or the Lord Aliento. He attempts to keep his dignity throughout, although it may well be difficult.
