Adventure Path Rise of the Runelords - Strange incidents in Sandpoint: a goblin raid, shadows of the past, a serial killer...what other perils do the brave Sandpoint Saviours have to master?

Harry follows on with Sir Karlan in the lead. Harry knows that Sir Karlan will be judged on the conduct of his fellows, so he ensures he gives Karlan due deference and respect.

Perdition continues on along with the ladies. Hoping to get his hands on or into something interesting, gnome keeps an eye out for just such a chance. "Soooooooo, I think Karlan has been away from that wife of his for farrrrr, too long. I am thinking he is a bit frustrated, hahahaha."

"Perdy, you would do well to leave Karlan alone. I think I have already given him a most difficult time and I could tell that he did not appreciate it. Without doubt, he is not going to want to hear it from his fire gnome friend as well. By the way, what are you doing with those hands of yours? You look like you are getting ready to pinch or grab something that you shouldn't. I wonder if you are in need of a soft, cute little female gnome to cuddle with. Hmm? Maybe I will need to keep an eye out for you and play matchmaker. Hmm, let me think. If we found you a little ice gnome, the two of you could end up with little gnome water babies!"

Female Changeling(Hulking) Bard/7

I was thinking an acetylene gnome would be good. I bet they would have an explosive relationship.

We head into the library, turning to Perdition.

Remember, reading - yes; learning - yes; fire - NO.

Once I get into the library, I ask for the chief librarian to return the books from Brodert.

I also ask if I can be directed to any information related to either the Runelords and Thassolia or Norgorber.

Male Human Paladin 8

Unimpressed by the grandeur Karlan walks into the watch house with the two large orcs in tow. Once inside he tries to find someone he can talk to about reaching the people working on the murder investigations.

@ Librarians:

You don't get very far: Just behind the entrance is a large white marble desk with two clerks sitting behind it. The older one, a man in his late fifties with large glasses, puts a dusty old book away and says

Welcome to the House of Books, the Grand Library of the City of Monuments. Praised be you wanderer in Abadar's name...now, how can I help you?

@ Watchmen:

You're lucky, the guard that you meet at the entrance is one of those working on the "Star-Murders" - even though on a very low level.

Female Aasimar Cleric 8 hp 50/50, AC 18, FF 15, T 13, Perception +15

Celestra smiles to the two librarians and replies, "Good day, Gentlemen. I am so delighted to be inside this remarkable building. My dear friend Ailetha here has come to read upon your old books on Thassolia. However, while she reads, my red headed escort and I would be most interested in a tour of this remarkable building. Looking around at the architecture of this great structure simply takes my breath away! Would one of you two gentlemen be able to spare a little time for me?"

Diplomacy 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20

Male Gnome 5 Sorcerer AC15/19 Mage Armor, HP25/25

Perdition just stares at the man's glasses. The thickness of the lenses enthralling him with the thought of what he could do with them.

Female Changeling(Hulking) Bard/7

Turning to Celestra and Perdition. You kids enjoy yourselves and be nice.

Turning back to the librarian. As I mentioned, I would be very interested in any materials you might have on either Thassolia, in particular its tie to the seven pointed star symbol. And also, any books regarding Norgorber, or Father Skinsaw as he is sometimes known, the god of assassins. I have recently come across both of these subjects in my travels and am quite interested in whether there might be any connection between them.

Oh, and I have these books to return. I believe that they were borrowed by Brodert Quink some time back and he was unable to return them due to his duties in Sandpoint.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25

Female Aasimar Cleric 8 hp 50/50, AC 18, FF 15, T 13, Perception +15

"Ailetha, my dear, don't we always enjoy ourselves?" Celestra replies with a knowing smile.

@ Librarians:

The man furrows his eyebrows and corrects you

You surely mean Thassilon, don't you?

As you mention Brodert Quink, he seems a bit surprised

The former Master Librarian Quink? some books he never returned? Let me see...

he looks over the small pile of books and whistles through his teeth

Oh well, that would make quite a late charge...ahem...nevermind.

He puts them away and continues

Now what kind of literature about the old realm of Thassilon is of interest for you?

Female Changeling(Hulking) Bard/7

Giving the librarian my prettiest smile: Well, specifically, I am interested in any connection between the Thassilon Runelords and undead and/or Norgorber. Also, I would be interested in an materials relating to the use of a seven pointed star. Both during the age of the Runelords and thereafter.

Male Human Paladin 8

Karlan greets the guard. "Good morning. My name is Captain Sir Karlan Bladetwist of the Sandpoint Militia if you would be so kind as to introduce us to your superiors we may have some information that will help your investigation along."

@ Karlan:

The man nods and without further ado walks into the spire. It takes about five minutes until he returns with a man in the uniform of a Magnimarian City Guard Captain.

Beltus Crown, nice to make your acquaintance Captain Bladetwist. I have received a letter from the sheriff of Sandpoint, one Belor Hemlock. Interesting that you now show up here - how can you help us with the murders?

@ Librarians:

Mhm...why don't you speak to our expert for long lost cultures, Averian Salis. You can find him on the second floor in the history department.

says the older librarian while packing Brodert's books away.

Female Changeling(Hulking) Bard/7

Thank you very much.

I head up to the second floor and find Averian.

Mr. Salis, pleased to meet you. I am interested in learning about Thassolian Runelords, their relation to a seven sided star, and any ties they may have to Norgorber, the Skinsaw Brotherhood, or undead.

Harry maintains the professional silent presence of a well trained bodyguard. His eyes however, continue to watch the occupants of the room and his surrounds, hoping some small details might be left about that could assist them...

"Ok, Perdy, I think we are free to stroll about, but let's be careful not to draw too much attention to ourselves."

Celestra strolls the library and looks for some maps of Varisia, Magnimar and the surrounding geography. She studies them in an attempt to learn of the local geographical features of both the city and the surrounding countryside.

Shaking the mans hand and smiling KArlan addresses him respectfully. "A pleasure to meet you Captain Crown. We have some information and a piece of solid evidence or too from the recent happenings in sandpoint and we were hoping to combine our info and rot out this mess before it becomes as big a problem here as it ended up there. If we could step into a quieter setting I'd like to discuss this out of public sight as the nature of the murderers means we'll have to be careful where our information is revealed."

@Ailetha:

Averian Salis, a friendly looking old man with a cane corrects you before you are able to end your question

It's Thassilon or Thassilonian. And no, there surely exist no ties to the god of murder. He had no followership in the ancient realms of Xin. The seven pointed star was a symbol all of the seven runelords used and can be found in all over Varisia.

@ Celestra:

There are hundreds of maps about Magnimar and the surroundings. Most are of newer date, and show the changes through which the various districts have gone rather recently.

@Karlan:

Follow me the captain says curtly and leads you into his office on the middle section of the spire. From out of the windows you get a great view of Magnimar.

Perception Dc20:

Magnimar is truely a splendid sight - so much white and gold. There is only a slight disturbance, a nearly ruined clocktower south of the spire. This gothic building looks quite out of place.

Female Aasimar Cleric 8 hp 50/50, AC 18, FF 15, T 13, Perception +15

"Perdy, did you look at all of these maps? There are some great map makers out there. When you look at this map of Magnimar with all of the districts, you realize that this is a huge city. If you don't know where you are going, you could be lost here for days. However, I think I am learning the gist of where things are. At least now, I won't need to rely on Harry and Ailetha to show me how to get to anything!"

After studying maps and learning more geography of the area and beyond, Celestra proceeds to find a music book. In particular she is trying to find a guide and fingering chart to teach herself how to play the flute, and a selection of jigs and reels that she may be able to learn.

Female Changeling(Hulking) Bard/7

My apologies for mispronouncing the name. I have only recently become interested in the land, although I have managed to learn a fair amount of the ancient language spoken there.

I assume you are aware of the recent series of murders which have taken place here in Magnimar. There was a similar murder in Sandpoint recently with a seven pointed star carved in the chest of the victim. Do you have any idea as to whether someone could possibly resurrect any of the Runelords or their powerful magics? It is apparent that someone is attempting to bring back some inkling of the Runelords. The question is how much could someone bring back? Is it possible that there are powerful Runelord magics hidden away in forgotten vaults with which evil people could rain destruction on this good land?

Male Human Paladin 8

Settling into the office comfortably Karlan addresses the captain once again. "Thanks for taking the time to see us. We just arrived into the city ourselves so forgive me for not being entirely up to date. Though I understand that it seems our suspicions are correct and Aldern Foxglove did not operate alone, or rather did not simply operate with a pack of ghouls at his beck and call. We have a few items of his here we were hoping to give us some leads on where to find his accomplices. If you could update us on what's been going on here in the past couple of days we can put our heads together and root this skinsaw cult out before it gets any messier."

@ Celestra:

The music department of the library consists of hundreds of old and new books and after searching for about half an hour, you are able to find what you are looking for

"The Flutist's Friend" - a work for beginners as well as experienced flute players.

@ Ailetha:

The man listens to your short explanations and says

Hah, that's funny, some weeks ago someone asked me some similar questions about the Runelords, the Runewells and if they still function: I will give you the same answer as I gave him...or her...well, these things have long gone by and are now only of archeological interest for us. So I highly supect that there are any connections to the recent murders, maybe someone has seen the star symbol and liked if for what it is: just a symbol

@ Karlan:

the captain seats himself behind his desk and puts some folders away before he answers

Well, about a dozen people have been murdered during the last weeks and all were somehow part of the financial industry. Some were shady characters, some honourable merchants. All were killed in the same fashion, war razors and then a star cut into their body...what the public does not know is that at the scenes of murder almost always also people vanished: Servants, wifes, friends etc. These have partially turned up as ghouls later.

Female Changeling(Hulking) Bard/7

DMZZ:

I was not in the party when they fought the quasit, Was that a working Runewell? Could I have visited it and tell this librarian about it? Just not sure how much I know, I assume that the group would have told me everything, but this has not really been done IC.

Male Human Paladin 8

Karlan nods his head sadly. "Well I think I can account for many of those people since a lot of the ghouls that turned up in sandpoint looked like they were from here. It should comfort you to know the ghoul lord that used a war razor on those people is destroyed and buried. But that was a few days ago. I'd be happy to leave you with that but we suspect he wasn't working alone. Or rather, he wasn't working purely with ghouls. Harry, show him the mask we pulled off him."

Female Aasimar Cleric 8 hp 50/50, AC 18, FF 15, T 13, Perception +15

Celestra takes the book, The Flutist's Friend, to the checkout desk and makes a few inquiries at the desk. "Good day, Gentlemen. I have found a book a wonderful book that is going to help me with my new found interest in music. I would like to take this book out, please. Is this the right place to sign books out?"

Celestra places the book on the counter and gives the librarians a sweet smile.

Male Half Orc Rog5 Cav 3: HP:84/84, - AC: 21/T:14/FF:18 - Perception: +12(Dark Vision) F: +6/R: +8/W: +4 - CMB: +11 - CMD: 25, Speed: 30ft, Init: +2 (+4)

Harry fishes out the horrid mask with a look of suspicion and contempt.

"Here it is Sir Karlan, the horrid mask he wore." "Mind you care how you touch it Captain, it is filled with darkness" Harry warns the Magnimarian Captain.

@ Celestra:

The old librarian smiles and answers

My dear, this is the perfect place to lend a book. Here, take this library card.

He hands you a white card, scribbles some things on its back and lets you sign a small form.

@ Ailetha: You may act as if you were present back then.

@ Karlan and Harry:

The captain nearly falls from his chair as he spots the mask.

Whoa...what in all Chelaxian Hells is that? Is it made from human skin? Oh s@%$e...I strongly recommend you meet Vaultkeeper Asundar Lox, he's a high priest of Abadar and the guard asks for his help whenever we have problems with supernatural or religious...things...

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13 <-- Does he really believe what he is saying?

I sigh: My friend, I wish what you just told me were true. But, what would you do if I were to tell you that not only do the Runewells still exist. But, as recently as a month ago at least one, dedicated to the Alaznist, the Wrathlord, still existed and was functioning in ancient caverns beneath Sandpoint.

Before it was destroyed, this Runewell was under the control of a quasit sorcerer. The sorcerer was defeated and the Runewell destroyed. But, as to whether these Runewells still exist and function, I believe your understanding may need some updating.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12 <-- Apparently I was a little terse in my response.

Female Aasimar Cleric 8 hp 50/50, AC 18, FF 15, T 13, Perception +15

"Thank you very much! I will take good care of it!" Celestra turns to leave, but then as an afterthought she turns back around and asks, "I was just thinking, by any chance do you know of a flute maker by the name of Petros Alessi who lives in Magnimar?"

Male Half Orc Rog5 Cav 3: HP:84/84, - AC: 21/T:14/FF:18 - Perception: +12(Dark Vision) F: +6/R: +8/W: +4 - CMB: +11 - CMD: 25, Speed: 30ft, Init: +2 (+4)

Harry puts away the horrid mask, he nods he is ready to leave when Sir Karlan is.

@ Celestra:

Alessi?

He looks over to the other librarian who just shrugs

Sorry, never heard that name, but if you ask at the Shelyn shrine, they will surely know where to find a flute maker.

@ Ailetha:

You think the man believes what he is saying and indeed your question was a bit terse. He furrows his brows and says

A working runewell is something absolutely impossible. I'm not saying that you are telling lies, but I think you lack the historical knowledge to judge these matters correctly.

Female Changeling(Hulking) Bard/7

Sighing: I figured that would be your response. Here let me describe what was found in more detail.

I tell him pretty much everything that was seen in the cavern under Sandpoint including what the quasit told the rest of the group.

Your description is an impressively exact one...I...but still - a working runewell? The power it collects has to be transferred or stored...I...mhm...

Your description seems to have confused the librarian more than just a bit. He rubs his temples and needs several moments to go on

Maybe it was a magic malfunction, surely caused by the quasit's demonic energy. I don't think you have to worry about that.

you don't think he believes what he is saying...

"Splendid! Splendid! Thank you most kindly, but forgive me, my good gentlemen, I am still so new to this city, could you kindly tell me how to find my way to the Shelyn shrine?"

Once Celestra hears the directions, she calls to Perdition and asks, "Perdy, my dear, come along! It appears that Ailetha is rather busy here, so I am now going to find the shop of Petros Alessi, the maker of fine flutes. I trust you will accompany you?!"

Celestra proceeds to the Shrine next to get further directions.

Female Changeling(Hulking) Bard/7

And I suppose that the Aasimar who had transformed herself into some type of half-demon and was in the process of performing runeic magic is also just a coincidence?

I the explain about the ruins at Thistletop and what was found there.

Surely, when combined with the recent rash of murders using Thassilonian iconology even one as skeptical as yourself must admit that there is something amiss.

I give him my most sincere smile.

Diplomacy:1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31

Male Human Paladin 8

"Before we go, can we get a list of potential suspects and victims you had? Aldern was the main killer in sandpoint but if he was a part of a cult it's possible that others under your investigation may still be involved." Karlan says.

Male Half Orc Rog5 Cav 3: HP:84/84, - AC: 21/T:14/FF:18 - Perception: +12(Dark Vision) F: +6/R: +8/W: +4 - CMB: +11 - CMD: 25, Speed: 30ft, Init: +2 (+4)

Harry watches on.

@ Ailetha:

Umm...your irony is out of place here - I realize that there are connections, but I doubt they source in some rejunevation of the Thassilonian Empire. I think someone knows quite a bit about archaeology and has heard of the happenings in Sandpoint and is now trying to cover his tracks by using the seven pointed star...or something like that. Anyway, I'm sure that the runelords have not returned to Golarion.

his voice sounds like the conversation has ended now...

@ Karlan:

Suspects? Oh, that would be a quite short or extremely long list...Ser Karlan, I have to admit that we have no clues and/or ideas about who might have done such a thing. If you knew anything about the ghoul lord - or if we could find out his human name - we could go on with our investigations in a more precise manner.

@ Celestra and Perdy: You don't want to wait for Ailetha?

Female Aasimar Cleric 8 hp 50/50, AC 18, FF 15, T 13, Perception +15

We can wait. Just thought of more to do.

"Perhaps, we should let our dear bard Ailetha know where we are before we just leave her here all alone. Come on Perdy, let's see if we can find where she's gotten to."

Celestra walks around the great stacks of books and shelves looking around for the bard.

Perception 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

However, she does get distracted when she find a book on the brewing of hard cider.

"Hey Perdy, look at this! This could be my new calling! Not only do we have the gift of brew from wheat or wine from grapes, but now we could bring about a true ambrosia to further the glory of Cayden, but this time from apples!"

Female Changeling(Hulking) Bard/7

Ailetha reaches out and slaps Celestra for the inside joke. (In RL my family ran a cider mill for many years.)

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26

Sir, are you certain that you do not know anything else about this. We both know that the Runelords were immensely powerful arcanists, with one also dabbling in the divine. We both also know that many practitioners of the arcane arts turn to darker magics to prolong their lives. The Whispering Tyrant and the rulers of Nex and Geb being some of the more infamous.

Do you truly believe that none of the Runelords possessed sufficient power to place his body, or at least his soul and essence, in some suspended animation which would allow him to be brought back at some future time?

Here, let me add one more tidbit of knowledge for your disbelief. I was recently chronicling the investigation of the Foxglove mansion. Did you realize that the elder Foxglove had in fact dabbled in magic designed to transform himself into a lich? If someone of the limited arcane power of the senior Foxglove was capable of attempting this near immortality, you cannot tell me that there is no chance that one or more of the Runelords did not attempt, and possible succeed at such a quest. And that this Runelord might now have been awakened by either unwitting adventurers or those with evil intentions.

"Indeed it was Sir Karlan. Seemed like a nice enough fellow when we first met and all. Was a shame how it all ended."

@ Karlan:

The Foxglove family Aldern Foxglove?

The captain's face twists and his brow itches nervously.

I was already wondering about the name when I was passed the sheriff's letter...I...that's bad news, especially since the conflicts with Korvosa have reached a climax. Normally I would now enter his house in Magnimar, but we can't risk to break into it - politics you know.

@ Ailetha:

I...I...have to admit that you made a point there...so, let's just assume one of the Runelords was revived - by the way of which one do we speak? What does that mean to us?

Male Halforc Ranger 5

While the Harry and Karlan are occupied with the Captain Kanyk stands by the window and takes the opportunity to get a better look at the city from such a high vantage point, trying to get a sense of the lay of the land much the same way he would in the wilderness.

Perception 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20

Female Changeling(Hulking) Bard/7

I truly have no idea of whether a Runelord has been reborn, or raised as some type of undead. But the area around Sandpoint is on the border between Shalast and Bakrakhan - the realms of Karzoug, the Runelord of Greed, and Alaznist, the Mistress of Wrath, respectively. Most of what we have seen points more toward Alaznist, but either, or both are possibilities. It is also possible that there are other similar occurrences further inland in Varisia of which we are not yet notified. Remember, the sign that is being used is the seven pointed star which references all seven realms and all seven Runelords. If it were just one, I would be surprised if he or she would give credit to all the other six. After all, saying that they didn't really get along is a bit of an understatement.

The white of Magnimar expanding in front of you is as breathtaking as threatening for a wanderer of the wilds like you are.

Tiny humans remind you of ants as they scurry through the streets and you wonder if they follow a certain pattern like the insects do. The most crowded places are the harbour and the centre of the city which lies directly at the upper edge of the plateau on which half of the city rests.

Male Human Paladin 8

"Well if you're worried about backlash from him and his family most of them are dead save, we think, his sister. That beign said did he have family still living in magnimar?"

The captain shakes his head, and slighty amused says

You only speak about the Magnimarian line, Ser Karlan. The Korvosan part of the family is well and powerful as ever. And no, as far as I know there are no Foxgloves remaining.
