"Was he working with them, sure. Was he working for them? I think he was doing so without realising the full extent of things, he grassed on Kaven pretty quickly; when Kaven failed the Test of Erastil it was Jakardros that vouchsafed for him, the same Jakardros that sprang forth Shalelu, they're rotten the lot of them. Was Vale a liability? I'm certain he was, and now he's not. In the end it was a hard choice, but Vale had to go - it was inevitable - he knew about us, he knew about them, he was in tight with Shalelu - even right up to the end he was worried about her more than himself."
Karlan Bladetwist |
A sudden thought strikes Karlan and there is this sudden brightness in his eyes that only Harry can see but otherwise his face and his tone betray nothing.
"I suppose you did what you felt you had to do. But never again. I can't abide a trail of bodies following behind us especially the innocent. Make sure Celestra knows so her chattiness doesn't cause your axe to itch. You at least made sure the poor sod had a proper burial right? We've got enough problems without vengeful ghosts."
Karlan Bladetwist |
Was kind of hoping one of the other two might do stuff since the elephant in the room suddenly turned out to be a carnival balloon.

I will take the +2 Keen Longsword, at least for now. I already have a +1 adamantine rapier, but the longsword is clearly superior. Although, I do not think that it is superior enough to be worth keeping once we get to some place that can purchase it. It should sell for at least 9,000 gp, which is a nice +3 cloak, or most of boosting a +2 belt to +4, or something of that general nature.
I am planning on taking Butterfly Sting in a level or two, so I will really need to get the +1 rapier upgraded to Keen to max the crit potential.

Harry and Thumper begin leading the way back to Turtleback ferry...
Yeah just slice and dice the loot, want to get the new guys into the game and reposition for next step as fast as possible :)
DM Zyren/ Heart of Runes |
Aye Aye!
The way back to Turtleback ferry is tiresome, light rain drizzles down from stony grey clouds and seems to melt with the peaks on the horizon. The barren landscape of the wooded foothills is not a bit more inviting than during your ascent, but still you feel elevated. The defeat of the Kreeg-clan head feels like is a milestone in your quest against the strange cult around the ancient Runelords.
The village's dirty main street is empty and the only sound you hear is the creaking of the tavern sign slowly swaying in the wind. A skinny stray dog scurries over the street and hides under a porch as in the distance a low rumbling sounds of thunderstorms to come.
Shall we just assume the others reach the village from the non-mountain side?

Dragging the literal pile of steel and bloodied weapons to a trademan Karlan's exhaustion starts to actually get to him.
"Ugh...my shoulders ache. We still need to talk about our other issues. We saw no sing of her did we?"
DM Zyren/ Heart of Runes |
When Karlan pulls the haul in front of the trading post, a burly, red-bearded man steps out of the door and gives you a curious look
Didn't expect to see you ever again...looks like a nice find what you got there.
He clicks his tongue and steps out fully into the rain
Gods...has been raining for three days now...ok...uh...what do we have here...aha...oh nice...
After a while he has finished checking the loot and clicks his tongue again
Can only pay you half the pile now...the other next moon...ok for you?
Ailetha Aurcalam |
As an FYI, I also have Craft Magic Arms and Armor. I think that rather than taking the +2 Keen Longsword, it is cheaper to just upgrade my +1 Adamantine Rapier. That way when I take Butterfly Sting next level, Harry and Karlan will get the most benefit.
+2 Keen Longsword = 9150
Upgrade rapier to +2 Keen = 8000 <-- someone correct me if I am wrong
I can also upgrade swords and armor for you all at cost, so we can sell the +2 Greatsword and other stuff that are not quite what people want.

So if we go With the route suggested above.

Thornson Ironfingers |
"Tsk, Tsk, boy. I see you've grown in to man, but have forgotten the lessons I taught in your youth about arms negotiations.", rumbles a deep voice. "At least I've found you in one peace and that is far more important, hahaha."
Taking a little liberty here with Thornson being familiar with Karlan and his sect through a long standing trade agreement with the dwarf clan Ironfingers is part of. Looking a bit of a unifying character here so tying in as many backgrounds to him as possible. Nice thing about being older than everyone else is that it will allow for such thing.
Karlan Bladetwist |
Karlan groans. "We'll talk it over in the morning. Don't have twenty days to spare."
Then he turns to the dwarf. "Oh, haven't seen you in years. Don't really deal in arms. HAven't even had time for the forge lately."
Celestra Zomesco |
"We should really do a survey of inns in this town and figure out the best place to stay. I am eager for a bath and clean myself up from that disgusting ogre den."
Heavy Harry |
Harry looks at the horrid weather and only manages half a smile when the talk turns to that of spoils of war. "Suppose we need to let the officials know we gutted the Ranger Fort, and then for accommodation there's that Inn we stayed at when we got here. Shalelu and her pops should be long gone out of there by now, they better be..."
Thornson Ironfingers |
"Always the cheery one, Karlan.", Thornson says with a chuckle. "And I see you've fallen in with quite a pious fellow there.", he adds nodding to Harry. Walking over to the half-orc he stares into his eyes for moment before clasping his forearm and laughing heartily. "Harry! I'd of thought a social disease would claimed you by now if someone's dagger hadn't. Glad to see you've found some way to avoid both, hahahahaha. It has been far too long." Glancing to the wagon of weapons he adds, "Looks like your crew has been busy. And from the look of those hooks the news my clan has received is true. Looks like he have much to discuss and some fellows to meet over a keg or two. I'll buy the first"
And with that he moves toward the inn moving with a peculiar speed and grace not typical of the stout folk.
Celestra Zomesco |
Looks like we have much to discuss and some fellows to meet over a keg or two. I'll buy the first"
"So, Harry, do you know this fellow? Do introduce us. You will allow me to visit with him, won't you?! At last, I meet somebody who speaks my language. Lead us onward, my dwarven friend and let's have a drink to share a story or two. I am Celestra, beloved servant of Cayden Cailean at your service. Please permit me to buy the second round."
Heavy Harry |
Harry smiles at the assertions.
"Only risk I have around here is people with daggers, but you know, they don't really bother us much as they are all full of piss and vinegar the lot of 'em. "
"Miss Zomesco, this is Mr Ironfingers, as legitimate a trader as I reckon I know, which isn't much of a comfort I am sure, but the weapons he deals in have edges as straight as the deals they come with"
"We can get the rest of the payment by the next moon sure enough, I just reckon there's a few items I might be wanting - aside from booze and good looking women - as you need to import one to find one around here."
"Present company excepted of course"
Celestra Zomesco |
"Well, Mister Ironfingers, I often wonder about that myself. However, you must admit, Handsome does have some impressive qualities, even if they are hidden in that rough demeanor. Let's just say, that I have to believe that even the roughest sorts of people can still do some good in the world. The mystery is why I'm drawn to that!"
Karlan Bladetwist |
KArlan finnally allows himself a smile. "Look it's good to see you but I've had a very bad last couple of days adn right now all I want is the aforementioned bath and a long deep sleep so I can fight the nightmares later. How about we catch up in the light of the day huh?"
With that Karlan heads back to the inn.
Kabal Breven |

Bree enters the village and pauses to look around. "Harry is probably some place with lots of booze, and lots of women..."
Perception1d20+12
Kabal grinned is spite of himself "Sounds like this Harry has his priorities straight."
Leaning on his staff, Sable surveys the area, following Bree. He pauses for a moment to pet his trusty feathered companion perched atop the staff's crook. "Well there are certainly fouler winds to follow."
With a quick glance around the warrior couldnt help but agree with Sable. This Turtleback Ferry... dumbest damn name for a town as Ive ever heard... wasnt nearly the cesspool that Riddleport was... but it sure as hell aint no Brevoy either...
"I reckon we could just pick one or maybe ask one of these civilians if they know your friend Bree."
Heavy Harry |
With that Karlan heads back to the inn.
Harry grins and beckons over to Thumper to follow - "Reckon Sir Karlan has it right again!"
Bree Longfield |
Bree grunts in response and then points at an inn she thinks is a likely target. "Let's start there. Harry wouldn't want me asking around. If he ain't in there, we'll sit and have ourselves a drink. We'll listen to what's being talked about. Someone mentions trouble, we'll find Harry."
Ailetha Aurcalam |
Ailetha looks to the others as they begin discussing drinks and baths:
You all know that this is not the end. Those two alien b!tches are still out there somewhere. Corrupting people and destroying all that is good. In addition, I know that someone, or something is trying to utilize Runelord magic.
She looks to Harry:
Even you should by recognize that this is not just a bunch of strange coincidences, it is a concerted plan.
She then returns to thinking.
The big question, which has been asked before, is why did they want the fort? The fort was Magnimar's protection from the terrors that dwell farther north. Is someone mounting an attack? Are there monsters out there, just beyond the horizon that are waiting to pour forth now that the fort has fallen? Or, considering some of the vile acts we have witnessed, is there something worse? Something darker and more evil.
Once she finishes pontificating, Ailetha will help the others find a dry in and then will seek out a dry corner to begin to record all that has taken place to this point since the party left Turtleback Ferry days earlier.
Heavy Harry |
"Yeah I know it's a concerted plan, but you know what, I am going to find the dirty bastards behind it and I am going to make them pay - and when I rip their hearts from their chests I will rip the gold from their coffers and build a monument to their passing... I will get revenge."
Celestra Zomesco |
"Ailetha, why do you always want to ruin a good party? Can we ever get a rest from all of the blood, guts, and evil doings of ogres and vile villains?! After a good evening of drinking and visiting, I will be in a better place to think about that tomorrow."
Ailetha Aurcalam |
The tall bard shakes her head:
When you stop thinking about vile creatures such as those we have fought, that is when they gain the upper hand. Until whatever is happening has been ended, I shall remain ever vigilant. You may drink away your sorrows and pray to Caiden. I shall remain here writing what we have learned so that it may be recorded in the annals of history for those in the future to learn from. It is only from learning of the errors of the past that people are able to avoid repeating those errors. The Runelords ruled these lands eons ago, as is readily apparent, none remember them. The few, if any, who do know of the Runelords do not seem to understand the magnitude of what might happen if the Runelords are returning. Returning and seeking to repeat the raping of this land that they undertook before.
DM Zyren/ Heart of Runes |
As ypu step into the Turtleback Inn, you are quite surprised to find the place deserted. Only one of the many tables is occupied by two weary looking fishermen and the bartender stands behind the bar, nervously swiping the counter.
No one here thought you would make it back alive...is Fort Rannick really cleansed of that monstrous ogre spawn?
