"Wouldn't be the first scary monster story we had to put down." Karlan says. "Going to have to call you on your ealier remark Harry. Trouble doesn't come looking for Sandpoint everytime we're there we're just the ones expected to deal with what's been simmering for decades. And here we are again dealing with a problem that should have been stamped out years ago."

I gots me second level spells now. One round of double damage for everyone with a Good aura. I wonder I wonder who in our party has n Aura class feature...

Yeh, Karlan! What spell allows double damage with a good aura? Is this a spell just for paladins? Does it apply just to weapons or are spells included?

Celestra looks the tiefling in the eyes and responds compassionately, "Marek, I am so sorry to hear you speak of these fiends. There is clearly a story in your past that involves these ogres, but this may not be the time to tell speak of such evil. I just need you to know that there are powers for good in this world that will overcome such evil. As I grow and learn in the ways of the the lucky hero, Cayden, I have come to realize that we can make a difference in this world and that with patience, all things are possible. Give us time and we will find a way to destroy these Grauls. Trust me, my friend, this will not be easy, but we will find a way! Trust Cayden Cailean to guide us and strike them down when they least expect it. He loves children and loathes creatures that disrupt families, and I can assure you, he will give us the ale to refresh our spirits and the strength to do what needs to be done! Here, let me get you an extra ale. It can only help in our work to come!"

The outsider listens to Karlan and Celestra's words, uncounsciously nodding along. Their optimism is terribly inebriating, and he blinks away as he feels it taking him, the simple gesture bringing him back to his rational, realist view.

I... appreciate your enthusiasm, lady Zomesco. You may want to confer with your companions before signing off on this hunt, though he says, with a meaningful look at Harry and Karlan. Leaning closer, he confides to the group:

I have told you before I would be coming here on a mission and now I lay my purpose bare: it is to dismantle the Graul clan and destroy each and every one of their members or die in that process. I meant to meet with the rangers and garner their support or at least their information before hunting down those creatures.

"I admit, these Grauls sound absolutely evil! However, when I consider all of the people that fall victims to these brutes and are unable to do anything about it, I cannot help but feel called to action. My dear hero, Cayden Cailean, took notice of me and guided me to the Starstone Brewers when I had lost my own family as a young girl. I feel that I cannot disappoint Cayden and the Brewers now. Day by day, I find that by using what gifts I am given, I grow stronger in my faith, strength and understanding. I cannot help but think this opportunity has come to me for just such a reason. We came here to investigate what was happening with the rangers, but there is clearly work to do to free the good people of Turtleback from these ogre villains!"

"AHA!" Harry looks triumphant "Our feet set upon this path from Magnimar, not Sandpoint. Although in this case you are right that the evils abounding are ones that have been left to fester. My argument against Sandpoint still stands though. Cursed place, it is. Cursed."

"So anyway, who's in charge of this town, they have a mayor or something?"

Somewhere in the distance an Ogre bellows at the word Mayor being uttered

epic

The barkeep and all other stare at Marek - never have they heard of someone who escaped the Grauls' clutches.

As soon as it becomes clear that your group is willing to take on the ogres, their is some cautious cheering, the people of Turtleback Ferry don't have much hope that the problem can be solved quickly...but a glimmer is there.

The mayor is venerable Father Maelin Shreed, priest of Erastil. the barkeep says.

Perception DC25:

The blood freezes in your veins as you suddenly see a Sihedron-tattoo on the barkeep's forearm. It was hidden by his sleeve, but you caught a short glimpse of it.

Ailetha's eyebrows raise slightly as she notices the barkeep's tattoo.

Father Shreed you say? Yes, we will have to meet with him. I was also wondering whether you knew another man we heard lived in these parts. I believe his name was Cartman . . no, Cartog . . . no, oh wait, yeh, Karzoug. Sounds like an ogre name to me. Have you heard of him.

I assume my previous Bluff (30) is still good?

Sorry guys, gotta love that 8 Wisdom.

The barkeep and all other customers think for a moment then shrug

No, never heard of that Karzoug guy...can't say that it sounds like an ogre name.

then he turns to Celestra and replies

They were...but as I said, it seems like they wouldn't care anymore.

When we are away from the barkeep and other prying ears:

Did any of you perchance see the beautiful Sihedron-tattoo on the barkeep's arm?

Male Tiefling (Daemon-Spawn) Magus 8 (Fiend Flayer)

Would Marek know what a Sihedron is? I throw in a couple of Knowledge rolls just in case:
Knowledge (arcana) 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Knowledge (history) 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

edit: The forum somehow hadn't read the "d" in "1d20". I fixed it and got crappy results.

WOW - 127 and 128 on your knowledge rolls. Pretty good.

Ailetha explains that the Sihedron is a sign of the Runelords, and then will explain who the Runelords are. She will spend hours doing this if necessary. Most likely with her 8 Wisdom, she would have already told Marek all about them.

Female Half-Elf/Human (Bloodline Fey) Sorceress/8

I would have tried. Ailetha has talked enough about these Runelords at this point, that you all would have know their names IC. I would assume that bringing up the name of one in front of a stranger, the barkeep, I would think would have caused Harry's curiosity to rise.

Male Half Orc Rog5 Cav 3: HP:84/84, - AC: 21/T:14/FF:18 - Perception: +12(Dark Vision) F: +6/R: +8/W: +4 - CMB: +11 - CMD: 25, Speed: 30ft, Init: +2 (+4)

Harry halts, deciding this is more important.

"Perhaps you could go talk to the Mayor then Sir Karlan, maybe take Miss Zomesco with you too, make a good impression and all that. I'll keep an eye on that barman in the meantime and see what clues he might reveal." Harry maintains a very pleasant smile, as though he was selling a walk by a sunny seaside.

Ailetha:

The barkeep didn't react in a suspicious way. YOu are sure he never heard of a Karzoug.

The barkeep turns once again to Celestra and replies

No, sorry miss, you can surely find a room at the inn, the Turtle Parlor.

Ailetha looks down at her drink which she figures must have been slowly leaking out the bottom as it is now much lower than when she was given it. She picks it up and looks at the bottom, then goes back to the barkeep.

Sir, I think your mugs have a leak or a curse. My mug seems to be much emptier than before. Any chance you could refill it so that I can determine what happened the first time?

After getting the mug refilled. She again sips it a few times before again looking to the barkeep.

So, tell me sir, when was the last time that any of the rangers from this Fort came through the town? Seems that they must not be very good protectors if they desert the town when it is coming under attack from an organized tribe of ogres.

After asking this, she again takes a very small drink of the ale, but as usual makes it look as though she is consuming more.

Mayor Maelin Shreed lives in a small house at the market square of Turtleback Ferry. The building looks well-kept and giant antlers hang above the front door.

Upon your knocking an old man wearing the prietly garb of a follower of Erastil opens. He smiles friendly and says

Oh, you must be new to town - we haven't had any visitors for months. I'm mayor Shreed, how can I help you?

------------

The barkeep refills your glass and thinks for a moment

Well, must have been shortly after the Paradise sunk. some other customers nod and their is an expression of sadness in their faces.

Marek stays at the tavern, providing support for Ailetha and Harry and hoping to extract more information from the insular citizens.

Paradise sunk?

Karlan smiles at the mayor. "Good day Mayor. My name is Sir Karlan Bladetwist, this is Celestra Zemelco and this is introducing rest. We're adventurers and we came to ask a bit about your ogre troubles."

Yup

the barkeep nods somberly

The Paradise was a casino floating on the waves of Claybottom Lake. It sunk some weeks ago...sad story.

Mayor Shreed seems surprised

Word has spread to wandering adventurers? Indeed, we are harassed by a family of ogres, the Grauls...but how do you know of them?

"We were heading north to the rangers on other business when we overheard rumors at the tavern while stopping for a rest. Seems no one's seen or heard from them in a while you know anything about that?"

Sadly not. The Rangers of the Black Arrow have always been our friends and I don't believe in the stories...you know that they have stopped protecting us etc. I think they are either pressed hard or all dead.

the old man makes the holy sign of Erastil and sighs...It's terrible.

"The paradise?" Karlan says thoughtfully. "Sounds like a barge or a ferry. What was supposed to be on it?"

Where would a casino boat get business on this remote Varisian lake? Does not seem like the choice location for a casino.

It served as a ferry before, but once it was made into a casino, it was the only entertainment venue...everyone loved it...such a sad turn of events that it burned to tinder...

You're over dramatic...it just sank. one of the customers corrects.

Female Changeling(Hulking) Bard/10 (HP: 82/82; AC27; FF23; T14; F+7, R+11, W+7; Perc: +11, Init +10)

Did anyone survive when the boat sank? Was there any bad weather? It seems strange that it would just sink, whether it burned or not.

Suddenly Ailetha looks down at the barkeep's arm: Wow, that is a cool tattoo, where did you get it? I have seen many with five and six pointed stars, more than a few birds. Even a pentagram or two. But I do not think that I have ever seen a sihedron like that. Does it represent anything special? A former flame? A fey? Local folklore?

Harry freezes, surprised the clue has been presented quite so directly... his hand moves from his sap to his axe, Thumper all of a sudden sits up, alert.

Male Tiefling (Daemon-Spawn) Magus 8 (Fiend Flayer)

Without completely understanding the exchange but quickly picking up on the subtle clues of tension, Marek changes position. His legs tense under the chair, ready to spring him into movement while he casually pops open and examines one of his many belt pouches.

Is Ailetha with us visiting the mayor or staying with Harry to talk with the barkeep?

While Karlan is speaking to the mayor, Celestra gives Alana some discrete, but sweet and tender glances. After a few smiles, Celestra turns to the mayor and asks seriously, "Do you think the Grauls are smart enough to infiltrate the Rangers of the Black Arrow? I mean, there must be something going on within their organization to cause them to stop serving the people. I have hung out with some very heroic people to know that they simply don't just give up. Well certainly not the rangers that I've heard of."

Female Changeling(Hulking) Bard/10 (HP: 82/82; AC27; FF23; T14; F+7, R+11, W+7; Perc: +11, Init +10)

I am testing the barkeep. Based on my read he has no clue who Karzoug is. The next question is whether he has any idea what the symbol he tattooed on his are is. Thus, the reason for acting like a cute little girl liking his tattoo.

Oh, and Harry, I have an 8 Wisdom. If nobody tells me to shut up, I am likely to say almost anything.

The barkeep rolls up the sleeve of his shirt

This here? I don't care much about it now the Paradise is on the ground of the lake. I got it after I spent about 50 gold there, gave me a 10% discount on gambling. You will meet other people in town who have it too. But you find even more in the depths of the lake. The ship sank on an evening it was heavily frequented, many a good man died in that accident. Only few managed to swim to the shore.

-----------

Mayor Shreed's expression becomes somber as he thinks about the terrible accident

Only a handful survived...most drowned or were devoured by the giant gars that live in the lake. turning to Celestra he explains No, surely not infiltrated, rather killed or the fort is still under siege, I can't see any other option.

Harry eases off the axe...

"They gave you a tattoo and you got a discount? That's an odd way to do things. How many in town have that sign?"

Can't tell you...guess like 40% of the men, heh. Yeah, now that the Paradise isn't anymore, it looks stupid, but I don't care.
