Always love it when the DM says things are going to be interesting...
Fethryth Teldanona |
One of my favorite movies, and oh man, this is gonna be fuuuunnnnn
Emerson Hill |
Okay everyone. Looks like this is going down!
I'm planning on throwing my light bullet once Gemma replies to this oversized kobold.
Let's bring all our forces to bear and crush these guys quickly. I don't think we can afford to split up since we're all low on spells.
DM Vord |
Due to the fact that I probably won't get a good combat post in until Friday evening, I'll say it's okay for Fethryth to go here at any point, as she's got to get into the fight anyway. I'll DMPC Tobias if Xynen isn't back to his games by Friday - Feth feel free to have Fethryth dictate the army soldier actions if you'd like.
Fethryth Teldanona |
This might be an odd question, but are there horses connected to the wagon full of explosives?
Jesselle Wesmere |
So I am thinking... And it seems counterproductive, but would casting a grease spell over top of the wagon smother the flames? I know is some games grease and fire make a potent combo, but nowhere does it say the grease created is flammable. So I am asking.
Fethryth Teldanona |
Since we're talking about out of the box ideas, we could try and get the horses to pull the wagon out of the alley, although that begs the question of if there's even a safe place to get this wagon to. I don't have anything on me that can put out a fire, so that's pretty useless, but we can try to keep summoning water on it I suppose.

I don't really think it would help to suppress the flames at all, though to your point I don't necessarily think grease would be flammable either.

It's a good point about the horses, and so that's something that I need to take into consideration in the next couple of rounds as to what happens with them.
One thing that I'd like to say here in discussion to the party - your ingenuity and creativity are always appreciated! And, of course, it's ultimately your game to craft and shape as you desire. That being said, I don't want the players to think that there's some obscure time-bomb puzzle here that you must solve in order to save the factory. From a story and decision perspective, you've already made choices that seem to be changing the terrible factory outcome in the shared Nilasa dream-vision (in the sense that you all made it an urgent priority to get here before the dawn, not to mention you got Heward and his people out). Sometimes the narrative - or the DM's writing (heh) - don't paint that for you as well as if we were around the gaming table together. I'll try to give Anneca (being your resident technologist as well as appropriately themed pyromancer) some sense of the impact as things stand in my next post.
In other news, you got yourselves (for the moment anyway) a pretty nasty combat, with a couple of you fairly depleted in spells and powers. So have fun but don't treat the combat encounter lightly or get too cute with it.
Anneca Summers |
Anneca is 5' too far to put out the fire with hydraulic push. Though it would be risky, considering the attacks of opportunity trying to get past the pair of enemies.
Anneca could shoot the horses with magic missile to get them to move. Is that animal cruelty?
Also, sorry for the delay. We had an unusual freeze here that required a law enforcement response - especially from my division. It kept me distracted for most of the week.

Not a problem Isaac, and I'm glad to see you're safe and sound. We Floridians have had unusually cold weather here...for Floridians of course...which obviously doesn't mean the same as cold weather north or west of us hehe. I heard an article on New Orleans getting snow and ice that they just don't know how to deal with or are equipped for, so I'm assuming Houston is much the same way there.

Factory Alley Encounter – Factory Aflame
Round 2, Initiative 20, Location: AK55
HP 28/30
5’Step: AK56
SA: Draw Pistol with off hand and attack Arsonist Tough #1 and Eberardo
MA: Holster Pistol[dice=Pistol vs. Arsonist Tough #1 AC12T] d20+3
[dice=miss chance 20%] d100
[dice=damage] d8+1[dice=Wand vs. Eberardo AC11T] d20+1
[dice=miss chance 20%] d100
[dice=damage]3d8Again, Emerson steps back to put a little distance between himself and the Tough. This time he moves up behind Gemma to prevent the other thugs from flanking her. He draws his pistol with his left hand, fires off a shot, and hits the man center mass. He staggers back and falls to the ground.
It’s obvious to Emerson that the most dangerous foe is the Dragonborn in front of Gemma and he sets his sights on the scaly creature next. He shifts his stance slightly to his right to give him a clear shot over Gemma’s shoulder as she expertly deflects the attacks against her. He activates the Searing Light wand, and it shoots a brilliant beam of energy that strikes the creature on the left pectoral.
Okay...I like ingenuity and creativity as you know, but unless I'm missing something obvious, you can't run a wand and a pistol attack in the same Standard Action per Pathfinder rules. Please discuss here to work this out, including any rules I'm not understanding.
So if my interpretation is correct, we're going to have to retcon the Emerson Round 2 action in one of a couple of ways:
1) Emerson burns a Hero Point to get a 2nd SA to use the Wand (probably not a good use of the Hero Point)
2) Emerson recons the wand for his pepperbox or whatever he didn't fire from his offhand in place of the wand attack, using the same dice roll - that would work since he has 'Man With Two Guns...' theme feat. If that still hits, the damage would have to be re-rolled. It also would mean the wand would have to be FA dropped or MA sheathed instead of the pistol.
Also I'd like to see better the bonuses and penalties when we get tricky like this in the combat post - I'm assuming you're running standard to-hit for Emerson, with PB shot bonus, but minus two-weapon penalties, etc. If there's grit points or something else being used I can't figure it out.
* The pistol attack looks like it should be d20+3-2+1, or d20+2. Unless the profile isn't accurate and its masterwork or you meant the mw pepperbox and not the pistol.
* The wand attack looks like it should be d20+3-2, or d20+1. So that looks right, other than it can't be dual-wielded as a weapon.
Again, i'm not using HeroLab to track your characters and am reliant on your profiles being up-to-date and accurate with stats, so if there's any discrepancies let's update and make it easy for the ol' DM go see it good.
DM Vord |
So I suppose I'm a couple of weeks behind some of the other campaigns that have noticed this, but it appears Xynen has disappeared from all his active games, with last post consistent with ours around 12/22.
I'll assume DMPC duties for Tobias for the remainder of the combat, and then by then we'll see what changes we want to chat about as it concerns the group. Please post here if you want to have any player discussions about it.
Fethryth Teldanona |
1. Just to confirm, are the areas around both dragonborn officially dim light?
2. With regards to Xynen, he's officially been gone for a month without saying anything, I hope he's alright. If he isn't back by the time this combat ends then maybe Tobias goes on a temporary mission? Something where he can easily join the party again if he comes back.
DM Vord |
1. Just to confirm, are the areas around both dragonborn officially dim light?
Actually what you see on the latest map is now normal light, due to the burning of the wagon and the flaming sphere illumination. So for now no one on either side (aside from the soldiers) has any concealment due to lighting.

Total Grit (5/8)Emerson blah blah blah
All right there Deadshot, I'm going to be like the NFL's replay booth in the playoffs here and see if you really pulled off the catch in the end zone...let's see here...
Swift Action - Focused Aim, nice
Free Action - advance pepperbox cylinder, yep
Mw Pepperbox vs Eberardo AC9T (10' distance):
* Emerson is at +4, +1PB, -2RS, +1 naturalist...so yep that checks to hit.
* Dmg is d8, +1PB, +4 Focused Aim Grit...so yep that checks out. That puts Eberardo at -7hp...rage drops...so he's really at -13hp and unconscious (17 CON).
Free Action - advance pepperbox cylinder, yep and fine for multiple free actions for that function
Mw Pepperbox vs Valando AC13T (55'-65' distance):
* Emerson may be 65' distant from Valando per the map, but yeah it's hard to tell based on diagonals and such. Emerson could in theory still 5' step to AJ55 in between shots, which definitely puts him at 55' distance to Valando, so just for certainty we'll do that.
* Emerson declares Deadeye Grit on Valando as immediate action & 2 grit points, to give touch AC at the 3rd range increment...yep that checks out
* Emerson is at +4, -2RS, +1 naturalist, -4 3rd range increment...so adjustment is that he wouldn't get PB Shot on Valando here. Still hits though with the natural 20 crit potential.
* Same as previous with crit confirmation (confirming with an AC16T)
* Dmg is d8, +4 Focused Aim Grit...so no +1 PB Shot dmg.
* With the x4 (eesh) crit damage that means -4 hp on the total dmg, for a total crit of 45 hp dmg. That puts Valando at -12 hp and dying (17 CON).
Hmmm....hrm...well...Indiana Jones indeed!
Emerson Hill |
It's all in the reflexes. Heh.
But in all seriousness, I need a flippin flow chart. Even with Hero Lab there are so many nuances.
Thanks for checking the numbers. I was hesitant to finilize it since I new I probably made some kind of mistake.
DM Vord |
Well I just wanted to do that so that we all know you just pulled an epic turn there with full legitimacy...very cool!
With one enemy (technically) up at AG56 within Gemma's 30' movement range, I'm going to allow her the option to see if she wants to act on that, and then I'll take care of the rest.
DM Vord |
REWARD TIME! It will be coming up soon in-game in the morning briefing posts for 5 Summer, but all PC's will receive a stipend increase of +2500 crowns, to bring you to a new stipend level of approximately 5300 crowns total (5000 + PC starting max class funds).
So you can start to look at your current equipment values and what you would like to requisition, and sort that out for 5 Summer - the Campaign Info Tab shows what the R.H.C. can make or have from a requisitions standpoint.
Just be sure to note what items you are showing as "crafted" at cost level - [crafted] notation or something like that.
If you've "borrowed" or "stolen" a wand from the Crissilyiri weapons deal you don't have to turn it in right yet, but indicated [borrowed] or some such to note in your profile that it's not part of your requisition funds. Remember however - the Noses are always watching!
If you have a "group" wand that's a bit trickier to value but just [group] note it or something so that it stands out to me if I'm reviewing profile inventories...and do your best to research what part of that group item was your share of stipend funds.
Certain special "unique" items are not necessary to value in terms of stipend funds - the three Ancient Coins that Anneca, Emerson and Gemma have, as well as the Golden Wand that Tobias has (and can't seem to get rid of). From time to time, other unique items appear in the story for the characters. You can note them as [unique] in your profile inventory and they don't count against stipend levels, nor are you breaking R.H.C. policies with them.
Makes sense? You can plan out to have up to basically 5000 crowns (gp) + your max starting class level as your stipend funds, not including anyone who got increased funds due to trait or gear from class feature. I'm resetting the bar on consumables, so consumed potions/scrolls/alchemicals in the past don't count against you. If you have non-damaged gear that you no longer want in your profile, you can turn it in at full value. Any questions, just ask me.
Jesselle Wesmere |
Nice timing on the hit and crit there Emerson!
My plan had been to jump on the flaming wagon and drive it anywhere else... but when it went boom that plan was shut down. Good side is I was not on the wagon when it exploded!

Most definitely! That would have been bad.
DM Vord |
Just a follow-up for those of you already starting to figure out where you are with the new upcoming stipend increase, w/ respect to group wands.
I did some research and back in June 2015 before the journey to Axis Island, several of you contributed stipend funds to the Wand of Cure Light Wounds [group] and Wand of Magic Weapon [group]. Best as I can tell, the contributors that allocated stipend funds to group items are:
* Anneca - 125 crowns to CLW Wand, 351 crowns to Magic Weapon Wand
* Emerson - 125 crowns to CLW Wand, 382 crowns to Magic Weapon Wand
* Gemma - 125 crowns towards CLW Wand
* Ifris - 125 crowns towards CLW Wand
* Jonathan - 125 crowns towards CLW Wand, 17 crowns to Magic Weapon Wand
* Willem - 125 crowns towards CLW Wand
So to those still in the game, you'll need to account for those group allocations as part of your stipend expended.
I think that's all I know of group-shared items, as I believe the Wand of Mage Armor is one that Fethryth fully requisitioned with her stipend funds, even though others use it. By the way, it's been used a fair bit...maybe 10 times or so by now?
Jesselle Wesmere |
Considering items... Would a Hat of Disguise be of use? Thoughts from GM and my fellow players are welcome.
DM Vord |
A quick update as you all determine potential gear for stipend level - I've expanded the availability of potions for R.H.C. make to be 1st & 2nd level (so up to CR3), in line with availability of scrolls.
Just some examples of affordable magic items that I would say are available in R.H.C. quartermaster stores:
* Hats of Disguise (1800)
* Handy Haversacks (2000)
* Heavload Belt (2000)
* Muleback Cords (1000)
* Eyes of the Eagle (2500)
* Buffering Caps (2000)
* Quick Runner's Shirts (1000)
* Sleeves of Many Garments (200)
* Catching Capes (200)
* Shield Cloak (1000) + enchantable
* Aegis of Recovery (1500)
* Gloves of Reconnaissance (2500)(note the item has been Paizo-modified though)
* Daredevil Boots (1400)
* Belt of Tumbling (800)
In addition, enchantments of +1 for armor or weapons are available, as per the RHC reference.
Just remember we're on a modified ABP system, so we're not doing Amuelts of Natural Armor, Cloaks of Resistance, Rings of Protection, Belts/Headbands of stats, etc.
Emerson Hill |
Okay. So because of his contribution to the wands Emerson can't quite afford two of any the situational stuff. So to make it easy on the math portion of combat he's going to elect to enchant the Pepperbox and make his pistol masterwork. That leaves him with 65.08gp.
Jesselle Wesmere |
Jesselle has been updated.
Hat of disguise +1800g
darkleaf leather lamellar armor (12.5) + 810g
long sword (4) + 15g
masterwork studded leather armor (20.00) - 175g
darkwood buckler -203g
rapier (2.0) - 20g
Had to get sell of the buckler to make the gold work I am not sure how it was out but it now works.
DM Vord |
So the returning *cough* Cursed... wand will remain a mystery? Well damn. That was kind of interesting, I was wondering how that would have turned out.
Yeah, I'm hoping at some point that Xynen will return to the boards and this game, but in the meantime I suppose the Golden Wand will have to remain tagging along to Tobias.
DM Vord |
I would like for now to stay in the briefing room as 'real time' and have more characters participate, since I put a fair bit of time to set that up and Saxby is incoming.
Just a couple of thoughts then out of game for 5 Summer activities:
* The characters, other than Tobias, don't really have to do anything today for 5 Summer. Currently you're fatigued and need to rest to lose that condition and regain powers and such. You can just hang out and get your stipend levels set to 5300 crowns level. Some events will occur as the day progresses into the afternoon and evening, so you don't have to go out and seek anything if you don't want to.
* Jesselle can use her Unfinished Business theme feat power to speak with dead on Valando, essentially at 5th Lvl casting to gain two questions. He will resist, so I'll roll a Will Save at DC 15 or so for him - even so I like to have more verbiage from this other than the game text of very limited/strict one-word answers and such. Even though he's been moved from where he died, I'll hand-waive that requirement since he's near where his brother Eberardo is being held. It may not amount to anything, but if you have some good questions and get lucky it might lead to something cool.
* If the characters do want to visit Cippiano's for his standing morning invitation, or track down this Lynn Kindleton from Dr. Camp's letter, you can certainly do that. But you don't have to on 5 Summer - just make a group decision on what you want to do, including just hanging at the compound and resting/gearing up.

Sorry for the lack of posting on my part, I've been dealing with a nasty sinus infection that's compounded by the stupid bronchitis I've had a few weeks ago. My brain is in a blender. I'm looking over Fethryth now for gear changes. Can we set the Mage Armor wand to 15 uses? It hasn't been used that often but I don't want to have to go digging through old posts at the moment.

Sure thing - actually I'd guess it's no more than 10, so setting 40/50 is fine by me.
Fethryth Teldanona |
Fethryth's gear has been updated. I got rid of some scroll, potions and misc gear and picked up a Cloak of the Hedge Wizard (Conjuration)
I have 132 gold 2 silver left over, I can contribute that to a group item if we want.

Adding the following items:
Handy Haversack
Scroll of Alarm (CL 1)
Scroll of Mount (CL 1)
Scroll of Obscuring Mist (CL 1)
Scroll of True Strike (CL 1)
Scroll of Communal Endure Elements (CL 3)

Scroll of Comprehend Languages (CL 1)
Scroll of Identify (CL 1)
Scroll of Create Pit (CL 3)

Removing the wand of snowball.
Net worth was increased from 1,689 gp to 5,289 gp.

I think we should rest until tomorrow, get our spells and HP back. For amnesty I vote for Nilasa's pair. Kell guild people can suck it, Deorn Feldman fought us to the end, and the Wareye pair did a good job of trying to kill us. I'd be willing to grant amnesty to the husband, but I don't think he'd take it without his wife.
Emerson Hill |
Agreed. Nilasa's friends were the only two not guilty of committing crimes at the time of their arrest. The rest can pretty much suck it.
We can always put in "a good word" in the report and try to lessen the charges for any we all think deserve it although I don't particularly think any do.
