As you approach the structure you can start to make out a few more details - there are some symbols painted that indicate that it was a trading post. There appears to be a few stalls next to the building where camels or horses could be tied up, but there is nothing there now. The entrance is on the far side of the building from where you are.

Bas'rac stops about 50ft shy of the structure "I'll keep the camel back, you can signal me to come forward once you are sure it is safe." he takes out a simple stake from the saddle bags and drives it into the sand, tying the camel's leads to it.

I assume everyone is leaving their camels behind for now?

Male Half-Elf Alchemist (Beastmorph/Vivisectionist) 4 (HP 31/31) (AC 21/11/20) (CMD 18) (Fort +6, Ref +5, Will +2) (Init +3) (Perception +13)

Setesh nods to Bas'rac.

"That would seem prudent."

He then dismounts, and cautiously approaches the structure, his morningstar in one hand, and a small vial in the other...

Minor Crab-beast

Any dissent for people moving forwards without their steeds?

Male Human (Garundi) Magus 3

Tarik dismounts, drawing his blade once more. "Let us not be unprepared."

I believe it is frowned upon to bring your camel into a trading post although i'm suspicious as you keep asking :P

Jaru walks around the building looking for any activity.
perception 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

Minor Crab-beast

@ Jaru - was more an inquiry as to whether there were any objections to investigating the house :P

The party moves forward while Bas'rac watches the camels. Rounding the side of the building you see that the door is open. The building looks to be a single story trading house that has an addition at the back for a sleeping quarters.

You can't hear any sounds from inside, nor can you see anything as the shack has no windows.

"It appears that whoever built this post so quickly, abandoned it just as quickly..." Jaru ponders what this means and looks for evidence of an attack on the structure.

mainly just stalling for someone else to go in first ; )

Minor Crab-beast

There are no significant external marks on the structure. Even with an untrained eye you can see that the wood used was not of good quality - and the roof and floor are uneven - but there is nothing to indicate there was an attack.

Female Human (Garundi) Ranger 1/Sorcerer 2

Noor stows her bow and draws her sword. "It took enough effort to build this place that I don't think they would abandon it intentionally. It has likely been picked clean a month ago but lets be careful about this."

She will move to the doorway and give a listen and a look for any fresh tracks before stepping in.

Survival (Track) -> 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

Setesh follows along behind Noor, glancing around cautiously.

I dare say that this is a trap...

Minor Crab-beast

Noor Tracking:
You cannot find any recent tracks, the sand lying inside the shop appears to be undisturbed as well.

Stepping to the doorway, Noor is able to see inside. There are a few shelves, mostly stocked with foodstuffs and general purpose items. There are a few gaudy pictures hanging on the walls. Sand has blown in from the doorway and covers the floor as though a gritty carpet.

No-one is on the shop floor, though you can see a personal area sequestered within by a closed curtain. The shelves are still in order, and nothing seems to be looted.

If you call out for an answer:
Nothing heeds your calls but the sound of the wind.

Male Dwarf Rogue 2

Still here. Just very busy. For now, Bazil will follow everyone else and flatten himself against the outside wall, trying to remain unseen. His weapons are drawn.

Female Human (Garundi) Ranger 1/Sorcerer 2

Noor gives Setesh a quizzical look. A stocked trading post is not what she expected. Quietly, she then steps carefully inside. Making her way to the curtain, she pushes it aside with her sword to glimpse beyond.

Pharasmin Clr 5 AC:18; hp: 36/38; Saves: fort +6 ref +3 will +7; 1 reroll

Jaru steps inside behind Noor. "Well, I wonder how business is? Is there anyone around? Hello?"

Getting no response, Jaru shrugs, "I guess not..."

Female Human (Garundi) Ranger 1/Sorcerer 2

"Shhhhhhhh! This isn't right" She quietly hisses.

Minor Crab-beast

Training course today, so won't get the update in till tonight.

Minor Crab-beast

As Noor draws the curtain across with her sword, she is able to see into the room. It is a small space with a litter on one side. The room has a patina of sand covering all surfaces, and there is a figure sprawled out on the floor. It looks to be an Osiriani man, but he is dead - blood leaking out of a gaping head wound.

Perception DC 15:
The man's mouth and ears seem full of sand, and sand is crusted inside the head wound as well

Ok - can everyone confirm their positions at the time that Noor drew the curtain.
Noor - obviously is at the curtain.
Jaru is within the trading post with Noor.
Bazil - outside still?
Setesh - inside with Noor and Jaru.
Tarik?

That seems right, at least as far as Setesh is concerned.

Surprise Round:

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23.

Setesh raises an eyebrow.

"Whatever happened here, seems to have happened some time ago. The sand has blown in and covered everything - although, it is a bit odd that all of that corpse's orifices appear to be choked with sand..."

Feeling a sudden sense of foreboding, Setesh swallows his mutagen...

Motivating Strength.

Minor Crab-beast

Sand swirls around the entrance to the trading post, before it starts to pool. The sand mounds higher at the doorway to the trading post before a solemn asexual figure rises from it. The creature is man-shaped, but has no mouth. Suddenly you feel a weight come over your minds and need to fight to stay awake.

Will save for everyone at DC 14 or you fall asleep as per the spell of the same name.
Bazil and Tarik still need to confirm location prior to taking their action in surprise round

Action Tracker (Surprise Round): Setesh, Jaru, ?, Tarik / Bazil, Noor

Knowledge (Planes) DC 15:
The creature is from the plane of Earth and has the power to put people to sleep. It is said that bladed weapons are ineffective.

Knowledge (Planes) DC 20:
The creature is called a sandman, and has a soporific aura and strike that induce sleep. Bludgeoning weapons have the best effect against it.

Male Dwarf Rogue 2

Bazil is still outside. If he hears sounds of battle, he'll come forward to render aid. If someone mentions a body, he'll come in to get a closer look. Also, is this a spell or spell like ability? If it is, I believe Bazil gets a racial bonus on his save.

@ Bazil - unfortunately for you, it's a Supernatural ability.

Kicking people generally works well ;-)

Minor Crab-beast

Elvish immunities should work fine as it is a 'magical' sleep effect, just not a spell or SLA

Male Human (Garundi) Magus 3

Sorry about missing yesterday, got caught up in school work. Tarik was with Jaru, so he's likely with the priest still.

Will Save:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Kn: Planes:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

Though his eyes feel suddenly heavy, Tarik shrugs off sleep with little difficulty. He eyes the creature for a moment, before he realizes what it is. Shouting out to his comrades he says, "It is a sandman, a creature of the Plane of Earth! His strikes, even simply being around him induces sleep. Draw what blunt weapons you have, blades are of little use here!" Tarik keeps a hand on his sword, despite his own words, and traces a sigil on the hilt with a finger. His blade shimmers with magical energy.

Swift action to spend 1 point of Arcane Pool, making weapon a +1 magical item for 10 rounds. Don't think I can do anything else in surprise round.

Minor Crab-beast

Back round to the top of the order - Jaru can alter action if he wants to.

Action Tracker (Round 1): Setesh, Jaru, Sandman, Tarik / Bazil, Noor

Round 1 (do over)

Shaking off the torpor, Jaru is alarmed to see Noor collapse. He grabs her arm and flips her over shaking her vigorously. "Awaken or that unfortunate will not be the only one to meet his doom!"

Male Half-Elf Alchemist (Beastmorph/Vivisectionist) 4 (HP 31/31) (AC 21/11/20) (CMD 18) (Fort +6, Ref +5, Will +2) (Init +3) (Perception +13)

Round 1:

For a moment, Setesh feels his eyes droop a little, but then the moment passes.

With a snarl, he steps up to the elemental creature, and unleashes a blinding series of punches!

Claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26, for 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 S/B damage.
Claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25, for 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 S/B damage.
Bite: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14, for 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 P/S/B damage.

Attacks that deal more than one damage type count as whichever is most favorable at the time, so Setesh's natural attacks should all work just fine... assuming they hit, of course...

Minor Crab-beast

@ Setesh - you're about 10ft away to start, so no full attack this round. I'll let the most favorable of your attacks stand.
@ Noor - since Jaru woke you up, you get to act normally this round.

Setesh's clawed swipe seems to knock some of the cohesion out of the creature, though no sound is uttered.
The Sandman strikes back at Setesh (1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21 for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 No sleep save as you are immune).

Action Tracker (Round 1): Setesh, Jaru, Sandman, Tarik / Bazil, Noor

Damage Tracker:
Sandman: 9

Male Dwarf Rogue 2

Bazil begins snoring loudly, and those close to him can here him murmur something about a barrel of fried cheese.

Male Human (Garundi) Magus 3

Tarik moves in and shouts the words to a spell. His blade crackles with lightning, and he slashes viciously at the creature.

Attack Roll:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Sword Damage:1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Shocking Grasp Damage:2d6 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6

Female Human (Garundi) Ranger 1/Sorcerer 2

Noor feels her dream interrupted. She was back in the sacred cavern..they were welcoming her back in triumph. It fades, instead Jaru stands over her, shaking her. What! He lays hands upon me? Take me back there! But her senses come back, she sees her sword and the sand covered corpse, both laying next to her.

Now her anger, reaches a new peak. "Some creature has done this to me? Intending to fill me with sand was it? I will smash it back into the sand from which it came." Grabbing her sword, she rises to her feet unsteadily. She continues to feel off balance as the roof seems to come down upon her. At the same time she sees her companions battling a sand-covered man? by the door. Her anger has given her a new perspective and she hefts her large blade and prepares to wade into the combat...as soon as the room quits shrinking..

Two actions: Stand and then unconsciously cast Enlarge Person on herself. As a player, knowing that that might cause problems in the small structure. Large. AC now 14, falchion 2d6+6, power attack 2d6+9

Male Half-Elf Alchemist (Beastmorph/Vivisectionist) 4 (HP 31/31) (AC 21/11/20) (CMD 18) (Fort +6, Ref +5, Will +2) (Init +3) (Perception +13)

Round 2:

10/18 hp, Mutagen(Strength).

Grimacing from the pain in his shoulder where the beast hit him, Setesh takes a 5' step, slowly attempting to work his way around it to get a flank, before unleashing a flurry of blows upon the Outsider...

Claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15, for 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 S/B damage.
Claw: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25, for 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12 S/B damage.
Bite: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12, for 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 P/S/B damage.

Minor Crab-beast

Tarik's blow misses the creature as it's torso parts to allow the blade passage, however in its distraction the sandman does not pay sufficient attention to Setesh.

Setesh tears into the creature with his claws - battering the creature. After one vicious swipe you hear a low moan as the cohesion of the sand is lost and the creature slumps to the floor.

DM Note to self - need more HP on creatures / or more creatures to account for Setesh's ministrations.
@ Noor - Not important now - but I was going to rule that the shack held up for at least a couple of rounds before it started breaking.

Male Half-Elf Alchemist (Beastmorph/Vivisectionist) 4 (HP 31/31) (AC 21/11/20) (CMD 18) (Fort +6, Ref +5, Will +2) (Init +3) (Perception +13)

Eh. He is only nasty when he gets a full attack; having three attacks means that, on average, he will probably hit at least once per round :-) Of course, when he gets a flank, he can stack sneak attack on top of that as well :-P

As soon as the creature falls, Setesh descends upon its remains with ghoulish enthusiasm, scooping-up great handfuls of the material from which it was made.

DM Voice:
I think as just found the 'earth elemental' catalyst I was looking for ;-)

Once he is finished, he conducts a thorough search of the building...

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27.

Setesh then turns to Jaru.

"Do you think you could say a few words for the poor soul that that creature killed? I think that the least we could do for him is provide him with a decent burial."

Minor Crab-beast

Setesh:
Yep - I'll let you run with that. There are 4 HD worth of 'earth elemental' there that you can divide as you see fit. As you sift the sand you find a hardened black stone the size of a grape.

Turning over the trading post Setesh finds that most of the stock is of middling quality - certainly not worth lugging around given the distance they have to travel. Under the bed in the sleeping quarters you notice a small bag of coin stashed coin and a couple of small gems worth 50gp total, and the dead man is wearing a silver necklace with a Pharasmic holy symbol.

"Certainly, however the dead can wait for the living. Let me tend your wounds." Jaru murmurs a few words and with a gentle touch cool energy washes over Setesh.

commute sanctuary to CLW 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Jaru then pulls down the curtains to serve as a shroud. He turns to Setesh, "The proper rites will require the night. Perhaps you can scrape out a decent grave with those powerful claws of yours while I prepare the body."

With a practiced hand he then lays out the body, removing the clothes, and washing it with water summoned for the task. He makes sure the holy symbol is left in place and once the body is cleaned he lays it upon the makeshift shroud. Passing his skane over the corpse he says a few words ending with a pass over the stomach, "Once your cord was cut as you entered this mortal realm. Now I cut the cord again as you enter the eternal realm. Pharasma awaits you in the Boneyard. Make your way swiftly and be judged. Do not look back, but be satisfied in your fate." He ends by making the sign of Pharasma over his chest.

Once he has wrapped the body tightly in the shroud, he sits cross-legged next to it explaining, "It is tradition to sit the night with the body to make sure it is undisturbed. If we do not have the time then let us bury him quickly and hope the jackals do not disturb him."

Minor Crab-beast

I'm going to assume someone has woken up Bazil and signalled for Bas'rac to come forward?

DM Voice:
For clarification, is the small black stone meant to be the physical representation of the '4HD worth of elemental', or is it something else?

Setesh nods his thanks to Jaru as most of the pain leaves him.

"Thank-you. I dare say I will feel completely refreshed after a night's rest."

Regarding the burial:

"Of course. I will dig an appropriate grave. We do not want to make it easy for the jackals of the desert to disturb his rest."

He then sets about methodically digging...

I have taken the liberty of setting-up a 'loot spreadsheet' as a Google document. The link is hidden as a spoiler on Setesh's page.

Minor Crab-beast

Setesh:
The sand is the elemental essence.....

I heartily approve of the loot spreadsheet.... but you better talk with Jaru about the last item first.

Assuming that there are no interruptions during the night...

In the morning, when it is time for the man to be buried, Setesh approaches Jaru.

"There was little of value in the shack; the poor man had few possessions. However, one thing that I did discover was this."

He then pulls out a silver holy symbol of Pharasma.

"This man, whatever his name may have been, was clearly a member of Pharasma's faithful. Now that he is making his final journey to the Boneyard, I think that it is only fitting that another should take-up the mantle of his faith. Jaru, do you wish to claim this symbol as your own, so that this man's memory may live on?"

Male Dwarf Rogue 2

Bazil continues to follow the group. Just arrived in Beijing today, so I might be completly absent for the next three days. Following that though, my family goes back to the states, and I shall return in full force!

Male Human (Garundi) Magus 3

Tarik curses as his blade misses the mark, but has little time to worry about a second strike as Setesh rips the creature to shreds. Well, as much as sand can be shredded. Slipping his blade back into its scabbard, he wanders outside to wake Bazil and call Bas'rac to them. He gratefully welcomes nightfall, as his battle spells have been spent for the day.

The normally humble and calm Garundi looks very upset, "Setesh, I wish you had not done this! Not only have you offended Pharasma, but you may have harmed this poor man's soul. Do you not understand what you have done? To steal the symbol of a man's faith at his moment of need is unforgiveable! We must replace the symbol immediately!"

Jaru furiously grabs the symbol and digs out the grave to restore it to the dead man.

I specifically said leave the symbol (25gp). I don't think we are THAT hard up for dough.

Ah. Sorry. I missed that - you included that particular piece of information in the 'boxed text', rather than in a statement by Jaru, so my eye must have glossed over it :-/ I merely thought Jaru might want to 'upgrade' his holy symbol. Please ignore Setesh :-)
