==============================================

Description and Personality:
Description: Although he appears clean cut, he often smells bad because of the thylacine company he keeps, so he tends to keep to himself and his animals. He’s also unable to grow any facial hair yet, although he is strong from the time in the wilds. He has a capable air about him and he is self-assured and open in his mannerisms once he feels comfortable in a situation, otherwise he’s guarded, keeping himself coiled as a spring ready for fight or flight.
Personality: Much like the animals he spends his time with, he is wild by nature. Cautious, suspicious, but should a person prove a friend, he is playful and affectionate. He doesn't mean anything by it, but it has made some of the girls in Restov a little confused when they thought he was flirting with them.

Background:
The Haywards have long been people of Restov, His grandfather still takes his rounds as a watchman for the city. His mother had picked up a job in a local tavern, but as she was young and foolish, one night of indiscretion with a particularly charming sort and ended up with a boy to raise. With grandma passed on before he was born with consumption, his mother was forced to go back to work soon after it could be managed to pay back debts incurred.

Due to long hours worked by his caregivers, Quinton ended up with a great deal of free time as a child and spent his time exploring the wonders of nature. From a young age he’d been enamored with animals, partly due to the fact that they didn’t generally have any other place to be and could stay with him for long periods of time. Other kids needed permission, adults had work to do, but if it was just him and the animals, time could just go by. In time as others of his age were getting into apprenticeships, he was helping put food on the table by trapping rabbits among the farms near the city.

When he was yet young, he found a hurt Thylacine on one of his excursions. After nursing it back to health, many people in town were quite upset that he kept it as a pet. Some of the farmers refused to let it on their land, afraid it would kill their livestock. Every other Thylacine that people tried to domesticate ended in tremendous failure, but perhaps due to the boy’s wild nature, the bond between them kept Ruddy from stepping out of line. It also ended up bringing about a matter of fortune for him.

After it became known, several nobles sent messengers to him asking about whether he could capture Thylacine for their own estates. Due to the difficulty of doing so, it would be quite the statement of wealth and influence. One particular noble, Sir Horace Aldori had quite the menagerie and was particularly insistent. Quinton found that the amount being offered was far more than he would need and he could help out his family, especially since Grandfather was getting older.

The first attempts were met with failure, but eventually he discovered that certain Thylacines with red coloring were much more willing to make friends. Of course, this pleased the nobles more since the creatures were generally more impressive specimens and their rarity was greater. But before he could make his fortune slowly, his Grandfather fell ill.

Sir Horace also asked him if he would like to take care of the animals in his menagerie, having several unique creatures from across Avistan, and for a while he did just that for a while. He grew in wisdom and stature until the word was sent out among the nobles that Brevoy was looking for capable travelers to explore the Stolen lands. Although Sir Horace’s family would miss the boy, he could think of no one else suited for the job and sent him off with a letter of recommendation.

Story:

Quinton crept through the tall grass in the setting sun, keeping his nose to the wind. With their natural camouflage, Thylacine were hard to spy in the grass, but they could be tracked by their smell, which was quite pungent. Ruddy sauntered up next to him, also sniffing the air. The best part about having him along was that Ruddy also masked his own scent.

A long shrill call he recognized as the alarm from the watchmen echoed over the plains. Either the town was under attack or Grandpa was trying to get him to come home before dark. Since the latter was far more common, and the former had yet to happen Quinton did his best to ignore the shrill noise, but he knew in his heart that such a thing would likely scare off his quarry. He stood up to his full height and surveyed the landscape.

Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed something big and whipped his head around to see the biggest creature he’d ever seen roaming the plains. Green skinned and massive with dried blood on its chin, it noticed him about the same time as it registered in his mind that this was not the best place to be. Immediately he started bounding through the grass like a stag seeing a predator with Ruddy bounding along behind him. He was a fast runner, his only hope was to reach town before the monster reached him.

It wasn’t long before he began to tire, and the brute was starting to close ground when Quinton heard the whistle of arrows overhead and the sickening thud of them biting flesh behind him. Rather than hearing it slow down or be dissuaded from its course, it let out a roar of rage and it’s steps seemed to come even faster. A familiar flash of yellow and silver passed beside him and the young man stopped and turned around, gasping for breath. It was already over.

Sir Hector and Mnestra strode back toward him in the long strides typical of the Axe Beak, it’s plated armor shining in the dying light. The Knight shouldered his lance as the watch came through pulling out green vials. ”I came to talk to your Grandfather to see if he’d seen you lately. It’s a good thing I did or we could have lost a man or two. Trolls are nothing to sniff at.” He looked down at the youth with shining eyes.

Quinton was overjoyed to see the large bird in action, and was mildly glad to see Sir Hector as well. ”Mnestra! How are you girl!” He reached out and patted the feathers on the side of her neck.

”Ah, I see how I rate.” He tossed the lance sideways at the boy, not losing the mirth in his eyes. ”Why don’t you clean that off and tell me where my next Blood Cougar is. I want a mating pair by winter.”

”These things take time, sir.” Quinton begrudgingly replied as he wiped the troll blood off in the grass. He’d hoped to have brought one home today if it weren’t for rampaging monsters.

”Quinton, quick! Your grandfather!” The both heard the shout that came from the direction of town, but not too far away. The lance was forgotten in his haste.

Old Quin was the one whom the young lad was named after, and since he was hardly fifty, he still did patrols around town. As the youth bounded through the grass again, he found his Grandpa laying on the ground, clutching his chest. ”It’s his heart again.” He said to the other guardsman who were standing nearby.

”Quit your diagnosin’ and git me home!”, his grandfather said through gritted teeth.

Quinton laid his hands on the old man and helped him to his feet. At the boy’s touch, the pain on the old man’s face lessened a bit. This was a fact that largely went unnoticed, except for a certain knight who had a pretty good vantage point of the whole encounter.

Later, after the lance had been fetched and grandpa was asleep in bed, boy and knight sat by the fireplace in relative silence. Quinton’s mom was made aware of Old Quin’s status, but couldn’t leave the bar on such a busy night, and if Grandpa couldn’t be on the watch anymore, they’d need the money.

Hector broke the silence after they listened to the crackling fireplace well into the evening. ”Son, there’s an expedition headed out into the Stolen Lands. If you go, you could easily make your fortune there. It’s dangerous, but if you keep your wits about you, you’ll be fine.”

”How could I leave Pa at a time like this?”, he thought, but immediately dismissed it. Hector was right. He’d need a fortune to afford the cost of the spells needed for Grandpa’s heart. Sir Hector was a kind man, but he couldn’t make a habit of paying a cleric for anyone in town that wasn’t his responsibility. Not only could he go bankrupt that way, but he’d lose face in the noble community first. It was the only recourse. ”You won’t get your mated pair this way.”

”I’ll get by”, said the knight. The question was, could Ismenia?

Animal Companion:
Ruddy (Thylacine Animal Companion- Bodyguard Archetype)

Str 12+2 (Eye for Talent)
Dex 15
Con 16
Int 2
Wis 13
Cha 7

Fort +6, Ref +6, Will +1
Feats: Skill Focus (Perception), Alertness (When adjacent to master)
Skills: Acrobatics +6, Perception +8 (+10)
Tricks: Hunting (genral purpose), Attack (undead and abberations)
Bite +3, 1d4+3 (19-20 x2)
HP 14 AC 13

Size S, Speed 30’

Future dreams and aspirations: Would like to have a zoo, stables and breed rare animals. He’s seen an Axe Beak, and would attempt to eventually make them into and lead them as a cavalry unit. I’d also like to see him pick up some crafting skills, making exotic saddles and barding for unique creatures.

Grautak wrote:
DM Thron- will you be allowing the Leadership feat at some point in the game?

Just saw this and don't remember answering it.

Yes. However, I will be building and RP'ing any and all cohorts. If they accompany the group into combat, I WILL scale up the encounters.

I also like to see cohorts come FROM the established story thus far, rather than newly minted npc's. Though, I have no problem with that either. The more organic it feels to the story, the better.

I have always preferred (unless the group had a dire need) to have cohorts act as stewards tending to things at home while I am away. Be they actual loyal henchmen, a spouse, a relative, whatever.

The only combat cohort I ever made was a Dwarven cleric in an evil group at my home table because we had no healer. He suffered. Greatly.

Stats and everything looks ok at the moment.

A little over 24 hours to the newly established cut off for submissions. LAST CALL!

DM Thron, not meaning to pester, but I have a PM with a question I sent to you. :)

Responding

Okay: Going over some submissions in detail for a little bit, and will be editing this post with some tidbits here and there. Do not take any of these as signs of favor thus far, they are merely questions.

EVERYONE: Consolidate any information you have posted in the thread onto your sheet.

Grautak: I see you have the Fel Rider archetype, which is obviously very thematic for a hobgoblin. Were you interested in more monstrous mounts (if so, what ones?) and chose horse by default? Or do you really want a horse? Just curious.

Seth86: From what I can tell, you have two submissions so far. I'm only going to be reviewing the most recent one, as I assume that is the one you really wish to play. Is everything about Erin as you would like it to be for official review?

Oterisk? ^_^

Yay for dragon disciples!

@Thron: people are currently unable to create new profiles (I'm still drawing errors, at any rate). Also unable to swap profile pictures, etc -- basically any interaction with profiles through the Account page are getting errors.

Ah...yes...that...

Well...this just got more frustrating...

Oh well. I would still like to see everything consolidated ASAP.

@ Azten, Yay indeed!

Yeah, well, this particular guy isn't set up to go Dragon Disciple... although he could. If he did, it would be after 8 levels of Hunter. They just get too many goodies at that level. It would take a 2 feat setup, so I'd have to pretty much decide to do it by level 5 or so. I'm just winging it because I've never played a hunter before and I thought it would be fun.

Sovereign Court

Info added to my profile and as a spoiler at the end..

I am able to modify my character... click on character name then click on "Edit my profile" on the right.

@DM

If chosen, would you allow modifying traits, keeping the same bonus, to fit the backstory?

Also, I was wondering about create a 'unique' drawback, again, based on one existing.

As long as the mechanics remain the same, I am fine with some re flavoring.

Here's my submission. The alias's name is wrong because I can't change it (Paizo, fix your s@~@). Hopefully I can fix that before I hit 10 posts, so I don't have to make a new one and have another dead alias.

Crusty's official submission chiming in! Went from the crazy bat-s@$+ (pun-intended) werebat-kin witch to a more normal human witch.

Despite not being Divine, I'm more of a divine-role due to my healer aspect.

Alright, background partially done- Mind looking over it?

Background Pt 1:
Her father wanted a son.
He never told her that upfront, but it was clear from the start he wanted her to be a boy- A fighter, a warrior. He was a soldier, a general, for a time. He was born into a long line of noble soldiers, raised in the art of battle and politics. He was on the frontline, fighting, impaling his foes.
And what did he get? A weakling little daughter. Strength barely better than that of a cat. She was weak. So very weak.
He tried. He tried really damn hard to get a good fighter out of her, but she just, couldn’t, fight. Every day, she drilled into her the rules of combat, the way you fight, tactics, trickery, everything he could... But all it really did was break her, and break her, and break her.
Every day, sunup, to sundown, he trained her in the art of warfare. She hated every moment of it, but it did help her gain some tactical sense.
And it was difficult. Each and every day, she woke up aching and hurting.

Eventually... She just left. She just stole a plain outfit, and ran away. Cut her hair, and just walked for as long as she could.
Then longer.
Then longer...
Eventually, her feet, covered in blood and calluses, couldn’t handle it anymore, and she fell, lying on the side of the road after walking for four days straight through the woods.

Journal of Thomas:

I have taken it upon myself to make well a poor soul who I found lying in the woods after a routine expedition to retrieve some nuts for the standard confusion spell. A young girl, brown hair, slightly pointed ears, fair skin, most likely half-elven.
She’s proving to be rather helpful and willing to work around the house- She’s not all that talkative, for the most part. The issue is, I swear, she never sleeps. She’s always asking if there’s anything else I can have her do. It’s kinda grating- So I’ve been taking this time to practice with her, by seeing if I can teach her.
She came today with a bastards sword. I don’t know why, or where she bought the bastard sword. It’s weird. The girl, in general, is weird- She loaths to be idle, always- Whenever she’s not in the house, cleaning, she’s working something, or reading through some of the engineering books I loaned her.
She wants to learn Magic. I’m not sure whether to teach her or not. She’s... Unnerving. Her love of engineering is shocking- She’s talking more about engineering than I do- I don’t trust it.
I have taught her- And she learns quickly. Very, very quickly. She’s currently spending the last eight hours reading up. She’s slept a grand total of six hours last night... It’s weird. She’s too young to be so... Devoted. She’s pouring her heart and soul into this. She’s obsessed.
So apparently this royal has run away a couple months back, and the officers are trying to find her- Asked me to cast a few divination spells, didn’t find anything, so they just left to find another Wizard to cast some. In other news, I’ve figured out that she’ll talk to whoever she can if there’s nothing else to do.
She’s strong. Really Strong. I fear that she might outdo me in magic one day- She has learned in the six months she’s been in my tutorage
I’ve been hired to go into the stolen lands to lead an expedition to rid myself of the unnerving half-breed. Sending her into the Stolen Lands in my place is a fairly safe action- She lives, she might not need me, and I can say I was waylaid by raiders on my way there. She dies, she’s gone. Will probably have to keep her alive, though- Can’t risk destroying my reputation.
Kailey's Journal:
[WIP]
Personality:
Strict and Regimented, she tends not to be very flexible in her action or planning- Nor does she take kindly to being called adorable. Or useless.
When she works, she works. She works for hours. She doesn’t stop. Her loathing of idleness is massive- She hates being stuck doing nothing at any point in time. She was raised to never spend a moment not training- And it stuck. She can’t stand not doing anything at any point in time. She needs engagement.
Her mentor, however, has taught her how to act a bit childish.
Keep in mind, however- She was raised a soldier. She’s willing to kill.

And, next up, a few requests-
Pre-game Crafting: May I craft things I can meet the DC to craft by taking 10?
Re-training traits- May I re-train traits the same way one might re-train racial traits? At the current point in time, it might fit, but she'll grow, and I want to be able reflect that in her traits- There are no rules for retraining traits.
May I use a few Eastern Armors? I'll probably craft it myself.
May I re-fluff Sword Scion thusly- [i]Your training by your father has trained you in the art of using the blade- gain a +1 to attack with Dueling Swords. This training... Has scarred you. You ran. You're hiding from your father with the local wizards, but they're starting to use slightly more advanced tactics to find you- You're going to have to run from here- And the forgotten Lands provide just the right opportunity.
What will you permit profession do?
May I use Int for profession, rather that wis?

Okay. Made some last minute tweaks to Snotboogies sheet that should all be reflected on the alias.

Juggled traits. (Adopted: Human-> Carefully Hidden), swapped archetypes to drop Grenadier for Preservationist because Snotboogie loves (ugly) animals.

And wrote up Snotboogies personality and backstory in his own lovable voice. Because I couldn't resist.

In closing, You've gotta let Snotboogie play. This is America.

If it were me, I think I'd be cool with retraining (non-campaign) traits, except for Rich Parents. Kind of defeats the purpose of that particular trait, if you let players retrain it for something useful later.

@GM
I will add a bit to background. But yes. Erin is the one i want to submit. Already have a profile. Made it before the "crash"

Does she look okay? Stat wise? No errors? Will just expand on background

Changed my drawback, mark of slavery didn't make sense with my background after switching it up. Also realized I didn't have a spell component pouch and fixed that.

Katlin Cart wrote:

1. I will read it over, yes.

2. Yes, exactly as you said. Any pre-game crafting can be assumed if you can make the DC on a Take 10.
3. I'm open to the concept of trait retraining.
4. Not wild about eastern armors...where would she have been exposed to them? This is not Tian-Xa after all. It'd be like someone crafting heavy samurai armor in Ancient Rome with no exposure...
5. Re fluffing is fine as long as it is mechanically identical.
6. Exactly what it is listed as.
7. No, it will use Wisdom as listed.

Yes, she looked statistically fine to me.

Sovereign Court

I should probably change my armour then.. I have eastern armour.. or is being noble enough?

I'm not saying you can't have it. Would just like a reason as to how the character(s) were exposed to it first.

Golarion is more European style armors and weapons IMO. And while a Japanese-style culture exists, it is a long way away. So I'd just like to see some rationale.

Sovereign Court

Ok i shall create a suitable addition to background or change it out.

I considered a different mount but based on my raiding background I think a monstrous steed at this point would have been too conspicuous. So I stayed with horse. I must admit I really envisioned a heavy horse but I couldn't afford it. If you are willing to spot me the gold for a heavy horse I wouldn't mind. As the game progresses, I could see myself training a new more monstrous mount.... Maybe become enamored of a monster we encounter.

I thought cavalier worked like druid companions?

Erimriel wrote:

The arch type receives a brute steed instead of the standard mount. It not only alters the stats but thematically opens it up to the discetion of the player and GM to pick something different. I considered Elk but it doesn't fit the character.

If you mean the money, I figured I paid for the mount and trained it. I have always played that way for knights and the like. Druids and rangers get them free from hanging out in the woods, but I figured I bought mine.

GM Thron- if that is not the case, please let me know and I will make some adjustments. Would probably change my armor and a lil bit of gear since I would have additional funds. We could also use the money towards upgrade from light to heavy instead.

If you get a mount or animal companion or the like from a class feature, I have never charged the player for that in gold.

Yeah, the part about not being able to afford a heavy horse is what's throwing me for a loop. Way I understand it, cavaliers get the horse as part of their class features, and it just follows the animal companion progression (altered by Brute Steed).

Yep

The horse from druid companion is a light horse. I will get 110gp back for the horse then. I will make some ladt minute changes then. Nothing major.

Animal Companion Horse:

Starting Statistics: Size Large; Speed 50 ft.; AC +4 natural armor; Attack bite (1d4), 2 hooves* (1d6); Ability Scores Str 16, Dex 13, Con 15, Int 2, Wis 12, Cha 6; Special Qualities low-light vision, scent. *This is a secondary natural attack, see Combat for more information on how secondary attacks work.

Beastiary Light Horse

Namely the stat line:

Str 16, Dex 14, Con 17, Int 2, Wis 13, Cha 7

So there IS a difference, only slight. Any stats derived from the mount class feature should use the stats provided by the Animal Companion version.

The mount in my profile is based off druid companion stats. I just paid the 110gp for a Lt horse. Would you allow me to use the wolfhound? It is 3pp but it is on the OGC

I'd prefer to keep it to the content I have already stated.

The wolfhound is on the SRD Here is the link.

I was originally thinking dire wolf with the character but that obviously is too high a level. I found the wolfhound when I was looking at alternate companions after your post. It certainly is in the same power realm as the horse.

Let me know.

Special A cavalier can choose this as a mount.
Starting Statistics
Size Large; Speed 40 ft.; AC +3 natural armor; Attack bite (1d6); Ability Scores Str 17, Dex 12, Con 15, Int 2, Wis 12, Cha 8; Special Qualities low-light vision, scent.

Less Natural AC, Higher STR and CHA; lower Dex, Con and Wis. Less Attacks. No light armor proficiency, not combat trained.. which I think is silly, but whatever. REading the Cavalier class the Mount feature gives the animal Combat training and light armor proficiency so that does now make sense.

From a gaming standpoint it isn't as good as the horse, but thematically it fits. I am Ok with either, though I prefer the Wolfhound for flavor. Let me know which one you prefer and that is what I will go with.

FINAL NOTICE!!!!

Recruitment ends tonight at 11:59 PM EST!

I have been reviewing the submissions so far, and have nearly got my decisions made. But I am open to more applicants and will give them an equal chance at selection as all the rest, as long as they are relatively complete* by the end time.

*This means that the character is statistically sound, and their background/personality/descriptions are provided and it all is in an easy to read format. I am willing to let fine details (such as gear selection) slide for now.

Sovereign Court

All fixed I found 30gp in my character and changed to Leather Lamellar a fairly common type of armour I imagine.

Also those who are having problems editing their characters, I run into it as well, I tried Preview first, the changes worked and then I saved it and the changes stuck.

Everything is complete unless I change my mount to a Wolfhound, which is an easy quick fix and doesn't change much mechanically.

Erin Background Stuff:

Erin was a special case. Born with the blood of a devil in her veins. It showed from birth. Small wings, very pale skin. Sharp pointed ears. This was why she was left outside to die. Well, that’s how she sees it. But she didn’t. She didn’t die. She didn’t lose her life, she did end up as just another death of an infant. No, she was saved. By whom you ask? Well, that’s her story to tell…

Okay, if I must. I was saved and raised by a secret order…. Their name? No. a SECRET order. Sheesh. Sorry. Anyway. They raised me, saved me from death. I was well cared for, taught the ways of the world and how things worked. How there are people that are good, bad, and well, people that deserve to die. I understood. No one really liked killing, what good is there to end a life of another. But we had our job, we had our duty. And we did it.

I never really knew why I was hidden from the rest of the world, but I was told it was for my own good and my own safety. Being a girl was not as hard as it sounded, I wasn’t the only one, and the older ones helped me a lot. The boys teased, scorned or flirted, but that’s what they did. So it was pretty normal I think.

Finally it was time for me to go and learn things of the surface world. No, we were not really underground, we were just under the mask of the world, under the surface. What people saw during their everyday lives. We were the true face, we saw what the world really looked like, what the world was really like. We ha d to make sure the rest did not see it, did not notice it. For their own sakes.

So, well, here I am. Part of the “real “ world. Still find it funny. But it is a beautiful place. Not what I expected. I still have to hide my wings, is still have to hide a lot of what makes me unique. Or so I was told. I listen, they have not steered me wrong yet. I try to be nice to those around me, I try to fit in. But I guess I am too separate from them. Sometimes my best intentions or even my best manners go wrong. Well, at least I try. Try to make up for what I really do. What I must do. Hopefully one day I will be remembered for that, and not for what I do to protect this world

went back thru the thread....think Im all set. good luck to all!

Submitting Rahaal, Cleric (Evangelist) of Abadar for your consideration!

EDIT: note I've reskinned Rostlander to be her traveling merchant background in and around Absolom.

And fluff has been complete. Everything has been handled. Point out any flaws in her character.

Good game all, may they that collect the prize wear it well.

With the deadline closing in, I'd like to give everyone the best of luck!

good luck. eager to see the teams

Good luck to both the DM and all the submissions. It's a tough group to choose from.

Recruitment is now closed!

I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to apply, and I hope that, whether or not you were chosen, you at least enjoyed the pre-game banter in the Gameplay thread. There were lots of good entries, and I feel bad not being able to run four groups at once and REALLY rock this concept out in full custom glory, but I just don't have the time. As is, it made the selection very difficult for me. However, those of you that were not chosen, I politely ask that you no longer continue to post there.

I also would like to remind everyone of the following note I made in the original recruitment thread, for complete honesty on the issue:

“Note: There are several people that I have played in PbP’s with in the past (or currently) that are likely to apply. I am not going to lie, I will likely show them some preference in regards to acceptance. I say this up front not to discourage new applicants, but to be fully honest with all of you. However, I have yet to decide on how many people I plan to accept, but it is likely in the realm of five. If there are outstanding characters presented that outshine all others (in my humble opinion), then I will not let them sit on the side lines.”

That being said, the following individuals have been selected to join this campaign:

Group 1:
Rockne Coonak - Chaotic Good male halfling Barbarian (Titan Mauler)
Grautak Matrakha - Neutral male hobgoblin Cavalier (Fell Rider)
Dagru - Lawful Neutral male hobgoblin Alchemist (Grenadier)
Yandasana Fethen - Lawful Good female elf Investigator (Empiricist)
Vianella Orlovsky - LN Aasimar Cleric (Evangelist)

Group 2:
Erimriel - Chaotic Good female aasimar Brawler
Andrezi - Neutral Good male Human Witch
Aleksandr 'Sasha' Volkov – Neutral Male Half-Elf Summoner
Serafina Trimble - Lawful Evil female human Sorcerer
Rahaal – Lawful Neutral Female Aasimar Cleric (Evangelist)

You lucky 10, please report to the Discussion Thread!
