That is a rather creative way to lay out character creation for a campaign! That alone has got me thinking of a character for submission. Lemme see what I can conjure...

Glutton for punishment! Trying to make your process of selection MORE difficult? :)

Man, I had forgotten the archetypes for Animal Companions even existed, but Totem Guide fits Matias to a "T". I can already see him casting Guidance by nuzzling up to Gii and giving him the puppy dog eyes that say "YOU CAN DO IT, GUY."

I think I'll adapt some of Gii's previous PbP experience (in games that regrettably died for one reason or another) to give a better picture of the kind of guy he is, and how I intend to play him. Additionally, he's vaguely based on the protagonist of the same name from the Sekien no Inganock VN.

Glad i could assist Gii ;)

This being the last day, I would like to offer the best of luck to all!

Good luck to everyone!

I know I'm really pushing my luck for the eleventh hour sort of thing, but here's my own modest entry:

Čemifobbar: a Short Biography

Čhemifobbar ("chem-if-OHB-bar") is a Dhampir who is tall, strong, lithe, and beguiling. He has a deathly white pallor, ivory-white pupils, pronounced canines, and long black hair with the sheen of glass. The most disturbing thing about his appearance, if anyone notices, is that he casts no shadow.

Early Life:

Early Life of Čemifobbar
Čhemifobbar was born and raised in the least likely of places. In a Kellid tribe; the Stone Bear. While his mother was carrying him, his parents found a stranger dying in an arctic storm. He was alone, unarmed, unarmoured and dying of numerous arrow wounds. Only when they went to his aid, did they see he was a dhampir. The stranger locked gazes with Čhemifobbar's mother and she was knocked senseless with a feeling of a blazing incandescent icy fire and she suddenly knew that she was carrying a son who would be a dhampir. The stranger died at that moment.

Despite his dhampir taint, his parents kept and raised him. He grew to be stronger than most. He was known as "Iron Tongue" because he had an innate talent for smoothing over disputes within the tribe.

None of the women in the tribe wanted him as a husband. Nor did he seem interested in having a wife and children. Eventually, his nieces and nephews died of old age. But Čhemifobbar was now over ninety years old and still youthful and robust. His bizarre appearance was bad enough, but his inability to age was finally too much for the Stone Bear tribe and he was exiled. He was oddly stoic about his exile. He himself was at a loss to explain why he was so much different from the Kellid.

He wanted to see if he could find anything interesting in civilized lands, now that he had no tribe. He gradually found his way to the city of Caliphas in Ustalav. He was delighted to find he was not unique! He met Pavothael, a hardened dhampir mercenary. Pavothael trained Čhemifobbar. Despite his natural elegance, Čhemifobbar still prefers brute force over finesse in battle.

When Pavothael moved on to his next job, Čhemifobbar started wandering aimlessly again. One night in Galt, he was ambushed by six bandits. Caught unawares as he was, his mind and body suddenly burnt with a glacial furor. As if in a dream, he killed all the bandits. Even those who fled or begged for mercy. He felt no guilt. Only curiosity about how he became so much stronger than normal.

It took him months of practising in solitude to learn how to control his rage. He does not really understand it. All he knows is when he rages, he feels his blood surge with both icy death and blazing life.

Now that Čhemifobbar at least has some control over his talents, he has decided to travel to Taldor. He heard it is an interesting place. Despite being over one hundred and twenty years old, he is still youthful, hale, robust, and oddly naïve. Death seems both friendly and familiar. It just has not claimed him. As yet.

The following is a snippet of a discussion between myself and two characters from a previous PbP game that Gii was in. I think it's a fantastic picture of how Gii deals with other people, and what his general outlook is like.

    Spoiler:
"Getting stuff done without magic normally takes muscle and skull-sweat, and that ain't as easy. But with magic all it takes is some finger-wiggling and everything's done for you," the woodsman says with a shrug. "I reckon that's alright for some folk, but I prefer a lad that can pull his own weight. But hell - maybe that's just me..."

At this, Gii's gaze is focused on the dark-haired man. His brow creases slightly, but one would have a hard time telling what the sapphire-eyed Nethian was thinking from his face, alone. The hand holding his longspear is another story, however, as it squeezes tightly around the engraved wood. "I can assure you," he starts, looking the other man straight in the eye, "We must work for every ounce of magic we can weave. I did not wake suddenly one day, and poof-" the heavily-clothed man gestures with his free hand, his face still calm. His eyes seem to shine with an inner power as he continues, "suddenly begin channeling the All-Seeing Eye's power. Decades of study and devotion are what allow me to 'wiggle my fingers and let things be done for me.'" Though his voice does not sound offended, it is clear that Gii does not appreciate the other man's take on magic.

"Whoa, whoa! Ease up there, son," the other man replies, looking at him while holding his hands up as if to ward off a threat. "Look, like I told the boy before; I got no issue with folks using magic and all - I just ain't keen on them using it as a crutch is all."

Gii's brows ease back into their normal shape and his hand unclenches from around the grip of his makeshift walking stick. He adjusts his spectacles with his free hand, sighing lightly. "That I can understand. There are indeed those who let their power rule them, who are as much a slave to their own magics as I am a devotee to great Nethys." The young man coughs into his free hand, and says, "You must excuse me. I am nothing if not a scholar of magics. It is..." he pauses for a moment, trying to find the right words, "unpleasant to hear people speak ill of them."

"Nethys? He's the god of magic or something isn't he? I kinda figure he doesn't really care one way or another what kind does he?" the youngest among them asks, his red-tinted goggles glinting in the dying sunlight.

Gii runs a hand through his hair, looking slightly incredulous. "I will forgive your ignorance on the matter. The All-Seeing Eye is not well-understood by those outside, peering in," he states tersely. "Whatever the case, I have no intentions to use my power to subjugate anything. Whether you choose to believe that, or not, is up to you."

    Character Backstory:

Idont was bred rather than born. As an experiment of cultists he was created by forcibly impregnating a woman by a vampire. He was one of many such experiments breeding monsters and demons with humans. These mad cultists were trying to breed a perfect being, the perfect warrior. However Idont was very strong willed and this caused many problems for him. Raised amongst the cultists with other experiments, Idont was taught to fight at an early age. Every so often he was tested by being made to fight another one of the experiments. This continued for most of his childhood until the age of thirteen.

At the age of thirteen, the demon cultists thought they would advance to stage two of their plans. So they decided to improve on this particular subject by preforming a demon ritual. However the ritual seemed to fail, and he were not visibly altered. Instead he became stronger and faster. The cultists did not realize this, thinking he was a failed experiment the cultist thought to sacrifice you to a demon. Upon realizing this and decided to escape. When they took him out of his cell to be bought the sacrificial chamber he used his newly enhanced speed and strength to knockout your guards and escape.

Idont spent the next few years and the streets, running with a gang of orphans. The leader of the gang, John was a clever boy and a decent fighter. John however was not very intimidating, and was often challenged by other members of the gang. One day Idont came upon John being pummeled by a member challenging him for position. Being used to fights and having no real social skills, he wonders up to the fight and looks. Seeing him watching, The boy pummeling John, looks and says "what are you looking at Dhampir freak." Idont responds with "Watching your attempt to fight, if that is what this is?" The boy angry and perceiving an insult from Idont's response, stood up and swung a him. Idont having excellent reflexes and being an experienced fighter swung back and hit the boy knocking him out in one punch. John got up and thanked him, and invited him to join the gang. John and Idont soon became friends, Idont's first friend. Within the year he assumed the position of John's Enforcer. Still socially awkward and strong willed John remained Idont's only friend for several years.

All of this changed Idont met Mary. Mary was the most beautiful half-elf Idont had ever seen, she was also the most ambition thief the gang had ever known. And Idont fell for her instantly. When she joined the gang at about thirteen she was already a master pickpocket. Using her new found influence with Idont she convinced the gang to go into the thieving trade full-time. Under her guidance the gang was so successful that they kept trying bigger and bigger jobs. Then one day Mary came to them with a job that was the biggest of them all. They were going to rob the . Some in the gang protested saying the job was too high profile. The job was to rob a reclusive noble man dabbling in the occult.

So they cased the noble mans estate noting that he and his cultists always spent new moon performing rituals for 3 hours after midnight. So the gang decided to sneak in and steal some of the valuable magical artifacts collected by the noble man. They made it over the gate, and through the court yard without trouble. In the distance they could hear the cultists chanting. Sneaking into the mansion they opened the secret door, into a room laden with magical artifacts. Reveling in their seeming victory they stuffed their stacks. So full of themselves they were that they did not notice that the chanting had stopped. So as they were leaving with their booty, they were caught by surprise when they ran into one of the cultists. The cultists called forth demons these demons slew everyone but Idont.

Alone in the world all of his friend slain, the only family he had ever known gone. So Idont set out, leaving the city and wandering the world doing the only thing he knew how, fighting. So for he 90 years he wondered from fighting pit to fighting pit, making his living with his fists.

    Good luck everyone!

Wishing I had a unique avatar pic right now...

"Indeed, may your weapons find their mark against your foes and may Desna-- ... may luck be on your side."

Svartoskshe has a pretty cool avatar pic. No bias on my part! No, no, no … Yes. A bit! :D

    Good luck, all!

    And anyway …

Could someone do us a favour? I have to confess I have yet to play in an on-line RPG campaign. So, would anyone be good enough to tell me the basic mechanics for playing in an on-line campaign? I have played in a PBM campaign, but that was aeons ago (exaggeration!!).

I am assuming that the basic idea behind on-line play is similar to PBM play. Tell the GM your basic tactics and standard reaction to situations, etcetera, etcetera. But I am pretty sure the speed of email must change those basic mechanics. And more than a little.

    Thanks in advance!

Čemifobbar, I am currently playing in a PbP Curse of the Crimson Throne that has a pretty good dynamic between players and GM. If you are concerned about what the posts look like, I'd advice you to take a look at our thread, starting with this recent post, where our GM gets the story moving to our current quest. There, you will find a little bit of roleplay and a combat example, if you have the time to take a look.

    Arthorion Aegas:

Cool! Thanks for that! Gives me some idea of what's happening.

I'll make sure to read through that!

I take it the flow of play is done via posting messages on a board instead of saying your piece live around a table sort of thing. Does that sound about right for the basic flow of a campaign?

    Thanks again for the link!

Basically, the gameplay thread should be used exclusively for narrative, while comments, questions, rules-lawyering and such should go on the discussion thread to keep the gameplay thread clean (it is OK to post brief comments in the gameplay thread, though I try to keep even those to a minimum).

Personally, I like the gameplay thread to read sort of like a book, except with rotating narrative voices. You and the other players write posts telling everything your characters say and do, in third person and in the present tense, and the GM replies telling you how the fictional world reacts to that, always making an effort to move the story forward. It's also nice if you can always write yous posts in a way that forces the story to advance, without stepping on the GMs toes, of course.

There are other stylistic issues such as dialogue goes between brackets and with bold letters, thoughts in italic, etc., but that can be adjusted during the game.

It's actually a very good exercise in writing descriptive text, too.

The dice rolls are taken care of by forum code as well which I imagine is neater than how pbem would work where I guess the GM does all the rolling.

You post your actions and your written roleplay and then whatever roll is necessary to attempt the action. Some GMs take on quite a bit of the dice rolling responsibility while others don't.

Like Azih said, it helps a lot to add rolls whenever you feel it is necessary, without waiting for the GM to ask for them. This minimizes the back and forth between GM and players and speeds up play, which is crucial considering PbP is already a pretty slow format for role-playing games.

    I recommend this!

    Doomed Hero's Guide to PBP

I second Axolotl's suggestion – indeed I've found that guide most insightful myself as I was struggling to learn the ropes about PbPs.

Basically, they are strange beasts: on one hand, by allowing pervasive descriptions, internal monologues etc. they can be considered one of the purest roleplaying experiences. More often than not, playing a character in a PbP is very akin to fleshing out a novel's protagonist, exploring his motivations, developing his attitude towards the world and digging always deeper into his personality. Done right, it can be supremely enjoyable.

On the other hand, in the spirit of this analogy one can say that a PbP is like a novel having multiple authors. Indeed, the only way for such a thing to be possible is for all players to engage in a cooperative effort to prevent their characters from getting trapped into their own monads. How? By interacting with other characters, reacting to their activities, leaving hooks for your fellow players to elaborate on and generally speaking, always trying to push the game forward with your actions, making sure to maintain momentum in spite of what is widely considered a tremendously slow medium (Doomed Hero's guide explains this far better than I did – or could).

Mechanically speaking, I've got nothing to add to what Arthorion Aegas said. Some GMs favor narrative combat, others prefer grids (usually with the support of such tools as google docs or roll20). I personally like a mix of both approaches, with random or lesser encounters being resolved through the former while leaving the latter for more complicated fights where environment and terrain play a more prominent role.

That said, good luck to everyone! Plenty of interesting characters here – this should be a good one...

Glad, I could crank it out quicker than even I expected. I know how agonizing it can be to wait for the dm's decision.

Thank you so much for applying everyone! I got 25 talented applicants! However... the party will be six heroes.
