Zevac:
You hear his story until it drops to a near whisper when he mentions being unprepared. After that you only overhear a few scattered snippets.

The remainder of the night passes uneventfully and a new day breaks with everything draped in a chill cloak of damp gray cloud. A cold, light rain falls on the camp causing the fire the sputter and smoke while those who didn't have any shelter wake to find themselves wet and cold.

The settlers are all early risers, although it looks like Andrea Meyerson and Burdo Deepsilver may have never actually gone to sleep judging from the tired looks on their faces. Once everyone is up and fed with a light breakfast, the travelers are ready to leave in a fairly short time.

Great RP over the first day of travel. Everyone gets 200XP.

Zavac awakens immediately at Warren's voice. Completely unperturbed by the damp, cold morning, he dons his armor, gathers his things, and places the backpack back into it's spot in the Meyerson's wagon.

"Sounds like a plan, friend," in reply to Warren's suggestion. "First, allow me to help with our foraging."

Taking a breath, he places a hand on Warren. A soft glow appears, and begins to cover the wild man, only to disappear as if it were never there. He then does the same to himself. A slight tingle was left where his hand once was.

"Let's be off, then."

Having waked before the dawn to take the last watch, Tityanna's is quite content that she had the foresight to bring along her winter kit. Though soggy and smelling faintly of wet animal, her furs keep her dry and relatively warm in the downpour. Without a fire to maintain, she remains quite mobile, patrolling through the tree line and the side of the road, occasionally pausing to quiet the captive animals, behaving much less like a stalker and more as a person interested in their well being.

After her patrol, Tityanna quits to the stream to collect fresh water for Puck, waters him and places some feed in his bag. She considers for a moment placing the pack saddle on his back, but decides not to until the camp as a whole has risen and started moving. He is a beast of burden, sure, but there was no incentive to treat him cruelly. She pets his flank while he happily munches oats and whispers to him in Sylvan.

When Master Donal wakes, Tityanna presents him with trail rations. "Hardly fit for a man of your stature, but we cannot maintain a fire," she apologizes. "And we could ill afford as a group to lift you onto your wagon should you waste away from hunger," she jests as she begins breaking down her tent.

Stephanus finishes up his sketch of the animal's rib cage as other campers not on watch begin to rouse. His sketch is poor and he's unsatisfied with his work. His mind is preoccupied with thoughts of wolves, wargs, and the implications of having them prowl the passage between Oleg's outpost and civilization.

After packing up his own things, he wanders across the camp to where Kam prepares for the day's journey and speaks softly.

"So worgs, or monsters of some kind to our rear." He holds his copy of their charter in his hand. "Not within the bounds of our jurisdiction, but between us and civilization. If we don't come back here and take care of it ourselves, it's worth noting that we might lease the job of rooting them out someday."

I agree with you, these beasts will need tending to, if not soon then eventually. Had these folks travelled without us, or some other small group passes this way, that pack may well have set upon them.

Kams looks around to make sure none of the travellers are listening, The issue will be finding their lair. With winter letting up, game herds only now starting to come out of their winter nestings, these beast may easily have roamed one hundred to two hundred miles as part of their territory. We'll need to find their tracks, then spend the time following them. With luck, a few of the native hunters that roam these lands will already know this pack and send us in the right direction.

Stephanus, doing Knowledge checks for 'standard' creatures and using the monster entry for IC posts is fine by me. Of course, I'll go through the spoiler for modified or home-brew monsters.

Warren:
Tuney brings you back a nice fat rabbit, while you are able to find some more edible mushrooms and wild parsnip. As you are foraging you notice an odd set of tracks in the soft ground. They appear to be from a creature, with a print much like a wolf's, but larger. From what you can tell it circled the camp from a slight distance. The grass in flattened in a few areas where it must have spent a few minutes lying down. Eventually the tracks depart to the south.

Kams:
It looks like things are going to take a turn for the worse. The light rain is going to give way to much heavier rainfall by the afternoon, and you predict the cold wet weather will continue for at least a day, maybe two.

Agreed. While they may or may not pose an immediate threat to our undertaking, they will at the very least pose a hindrance to trade by their very presence. Trade and open roads on which to conduct that trade is the blood and veins of any thriving settlement. It may be worth the time and effort to discover all we can of their habits- and to find out if they are passing through as we are, or if they truly claim the area as their own.

At Tityanna's approaches Donal greets her with a warm good morning and adds with a causal wave at the damp weather, "I'm in your debt for the use of the tent. It is a pleasure to wake up dry rather than soaked to the skin."

He graciously accepts the offered rations and pats his stomach lightly, laughing at her comment, "I'll not likely waste away too soon."

A mischievous grin crosses his face and with a wink at Tityanna he grabs a pair of firm red apples from a small box in the back of the wagon. Handing one to her he says, "Fresh fruit is hard to come by this time of year. The merchant in Rostov was overcharging for these, but I went ahead and splurged." He rubs the firm fruit with a soft cloth from the box to give it a nice shine. "I was going to save them for when I reached Oleg's, but it seems to me they'll be much better shared with a friend." The apple offers a satisfying snap and crunch sound as he bites into the fresh and tasty treat.

As if on cue, young Sari Meyerson appears at Donal's side. Her bright eyes watching the apple. Without her saying anything, the big man grins and deftly cuts a slice off for her. Biting into the treat, she let's a bit of juice run down her chin, before she smiles at the big man and offers a quick thank you. Then she turns and scampers away, to answer her mother's call for her to help break down camp.

Warren, Zavac, and the two eagles return from a quick foraging expedition with mushrooms, parsnips, and a fresh rabbit. They hand over the food to the best cook in camp. "All the fixings for a great rabbit stew."

Warrens tone gets very serious, "A very large wolf or a Warg was within sight of our camp last night and tracks from this wolf lead to the south."

Warren points to an area just outside of camp. "He lied in wait in that spot for at least a few minutes. If we were alone I would consider tracking them and trying to get them first as the best defense is a good offense, but right now I think our primary responsibility is to protect this caravan."

Female Human Sorceress (Fey) 1/ Oracle (Life) 1

Tityanna beams at the offering of an apple. Having been reared in poverty, in lands that did not support agriculture in the least, she is well aware of the value of such a gift. She takes it and smells the skin for a few moments before taking the first bite.

"You do realize that in less... enlightened circles, this gesture might be misconstrued as a prelude to courtship?" she hums after watching the younger girl skitter away. She watches after the girl for a few moments, then turns back to Master Donal. "When I was her age, we all had stars in our eyes for the smith's apprentice." We were jealous of the heat.

Tityanna takes another bite then licks juice from her own lips and colors slightly. "I have no difficulty sharing my tent with a gentleman. And if you've any idea for keeping our fires lit in such inclement weather, I'd gladly discuss that with you as well."

...

Tityanna will take 10 on her Kn. Arcana for 15 to identify a Warg

At the mention of the Warg, Tityanna's eyes narrow. "A single warg is hardly a threat to us," she says. "You are correct. Our responsibility is, at current to protect the caravan. The success of our mission south depends upon our charge."

Stephanus intentionally lowers his voice to avoid upsetting either the volatile dwarf or any of the young in the camp.

"Yes, I meant it more as an annotation on our way. This problem doesn't lie within the jurisdiction of our license, but it may threaten future travelers as sure as bandits. I've no experience with the beasts."

"Perhaps we'll track them sometime," he says to Warren as he stoops to pack his things. "If they are worgs, we'll slay the evil creatures together. I would like to see the difference first hand - and survive to write of it of course."

Stephanus resumes his post in the rear of the last wagon and concentrates on being more personable towards his hosts. He's stays well clear of the explosive chests and avoids starting any fires. Wet Weather and Bowstring Issues:
For bowstrings, I'll assume they'll be kept dry and unstrung during wet weather unless otherwise stated. For those with proficiency, it's a single full-round action to string a bow and ready an arrow. For those without, it would be two rounds. Unless some other precaution is taken to keep the string dry, keeping a bow strung in the rain outside actual combat will result in the following modifiers due to weakened string:
* Range is half normal
* -4 to hit
* -2 to damage
These only apply if strings are exposed over long periods time, not just before, during, or right after a combat situation.

The blacksmith stops mid-bite at Tityanna's comment. Turning a brilliant, and satisfying, shade of red it seems she has left the man quite speechless. At least for a second or two.

Putting his hand to heart and bowing his head he says, "Beauty and boldness. A combination sure to light the fires of a man's passion and spirit."

Another grin crosses his face and his eyes twinkle with good humor before he says,

"I ne'er was struck before that hour
With love so sudden and so sweet.
Her face it bloomed like a sweet flower
And stole my heart away complete."

Finishing the snippet of poetry, he looks Tityanna in the eye, takes another bit of apple and then can't stop himself from chuckling as he overhears the banter between Warren and Zevac.

Despite Stephanus' attempts to engage Porter and Burdo in conversation, the two seem to be deep in their own thoughts. The talk of Worgs and the weather has dampened even the normally cheerful Porter's spirits. Once the wagons are underway, the two spend most of the morning carefully watching the surrounding countryside for any sign of the evil creatures or other danger.

Tityanna's eyes widen when Master Donal delivers his poem. She had received several of varying craftsmanship and quality while at court, the bulk of which were thinly veiled metaphor for plucking her innocence. She is unable to speak for a few moments, considering the bite she has taken from the apple.

"I have seen poorer foundations for productive partnerships," she says finally, and chuckles. She spares a glance for Warren and Zavac and smiles.

"If the notion of sharing food makes you uncomfortable, I could join you in ranging," Tityanna offers. "My training was quite a few years back, and if we are meant to stomp about the wilds I should not be a detriment to you all because I cannot pull my own weight."

The caravan breaks camp under a different mood from the previous day. There is less banter from the settlers as the unexpected threat of monsters roaming the countryside and the dreary, wet weather have dampened their high spirits. The Meyerson children ride in the now covered wagon. The others follow suit and rig their carts and wagons to provide as much protection as possible from the rain and increasing wind. Fortunately, the road is still in good shape. There isn’t much mud to slow travel despite the weather and overall the wagons are able to make good time until around midday.

Warren:
Rounding a bend about midday, you see through the falling rain and mist a heavy cart sitting on the side of the road. One wheel is clearly broken as the cart sits in a shallow ditch nearly overturned on its side. The bloody remains of two mules are scattered near the cart, offering an immediate grizzly site. A hand, still gripping a short sword sticks out from behind the far side of the cart while another body lays unnaturally draped between the driver's seat and the tongue, its left side in tatters from a series of vicious gashes. A little further on you can make out the shredded remnants of a tent and other camp equipment scattered just a few steps from the main road.

Woolen hood and cloak pulled up against the rain, Alianna plods along atop her horse near the front of the caravan. I should have brought a wagon of my own, she muses as the wet droplets pelt her.

Squaring her shoulders, she sits determinedly and begins to hum a merry tune to keep spirits up. Wynd's ears prick back towards her, the horse listening and snorting in response, so she hums a little louder, grinning and patting his neck and calling over her shoulder.

"Such lovely weather, don't you think, Master Meyerson? I wonder how long till the sun deems to grace us with its presence! Do you or the children know any good tunes for such an occassion?"

If possible, he will look to see if it's feasible to gather the bodies, men and beasts, to the tipped side of the cart, then turn it atop them. If possible, we should spare the children and women folk these horrors, for as long as it be able. The road is long enough ahead, and a day I fear approaches where such sights may be all too common.

Ali, it seems beasts and brigands yet rule while good men toil towards the light.

Eyes wide with horror, Aliana surveys the scene before them. While she may be trained with weapons, she has never seen an actual battle, nor evening a brawl, nevermind the aftermath of a slaughter like this. She works her jaw, trying to make her voice audible. "The work of those wargs, you think?"

At the mention of songs young Sari pipes up, "I know The Goblin's Whiskey Barrel, or Young Willam's First Night Out, or All for Me Grog, or..." Her mother breaks in with an astonished "Sari Meyerson, where did you learn those songs."

With a perfectly innocent look Sari looks over to her older brother whose futile attempts to quiet the girl quickly give way to red faced embarrassment, "Gregor and his friends were always singing them when they were in the village." Sari says brightly as her brother slumps in the saddle neatly wrapped in the mantle of defeat.

At his mother's look, the young man quickly drops his horse further back in the caravan muttering something about having to help the others with one of the tarps.

Before Andrea can offer a few choice words for her oldest son and wayward daughter, Fulton pulls up on the reins bringing the caravan to a stop at Warren's signal.

Kams:
It's difficult with the rain, but you manage to find a few tracks similar to those found earlier near camp. Interestingly, it does look like there were more than one of the creatures, likely three, maybe even four.

Circling a little further from the cart, you spot a rough track where it looks like something heavy was drug off through the grass and brush.

Your search for dry wood comes up empty. Looking at the cart, you figure it will burn easily once you get it started, but you're certainly going to need to use oil or something to get a fire going in this weather.

Zevac:
It's pretty clear some kind of large wolf-like creature attacked and killed these men. A worg is a very strong possibility. Neither of the two men near the cart are alive. Both have sustained multiple massive bite wounds similar to the draft animals. They likely died within minutes.

You also note that it appears these weren't simple peasants or merchant travelers. While much of their clothing is torn and covered in mud or blood, you can see what appears to be an official insignia of some kind on one of the mens cloaks and they were armed with short swords and wearing leather armor.

Knowledge(Local) DC10 to determine meaning of the patch.

Alaina:
You spot a large tuft of thick, wiry black fur caught on a corner of the cart. This along with the bite wounds would certainly point towards an attack by worgs or something very similar.

Male Human Ranger

It would seem at least three of these wolf beasts attacked, killing all present. Pointing to a matted depression leading away from the scene, Here something heavy was drug away; another mount, a victim, I'm not sure due to the rain.

Turning to the others, Master Kingeagle, might one of your avian fellows follow this track from the air? I hold little hope due to the rain and encroaching foliage, but it's worth a try. I'm willing to track and follow, but our first priority must be the wagons.

Tracing a bow and nocked arrow sign, unless stopped, Kams will begin moving the bodies of the two men towards the ruined cart. This thing should burn, but we will need oil to get it going. I have one flask, though I fear more may be needed. Gazing at the mules, And I think I'll need help moving those.

Warren:
You search the wreckage and manage to find a crossbow that looks to be in working condition. However, many of the bolts are useless having been damaged in the crash or weather. Overall, you are able to salvage 1d10 ⇒ 5 bolts from the wreck.

Both you and the eagles quickly survey the nearby area and you are able to easily find and follow the trail that Kams pointed out earlier. In addition, you spot a small bit of cloth stuck to a thorny shrub. The fabric looks similar to the cloaks worn by the other victims.

As you examine the fabric Monty lets out a warning cry that signals he has spotted something in the distance to the southwest.

Warren thinks they might have dragged off a survivor, and he's leading some of the others off to see what can be done. Please spread the word to the others, I'll be stayin' here to keep an eye on things but we all need to keep our guard up."

Kams accepts Zavac's assistance moving the corpses. These deserve better than to be only 'nibbled' on. Why did the wolves not take more than just the one body?

When Warren signals his desire to take after the beasts, Master Kingeagle, Zavac and I will follow, but perhaps we should fan out somewhat, with your eagles providing cover. It may be our line approach will beat the brush, and either scare out the third, maybe fourth, or drive them from the kill. Oil and fire to torches may add to bringing out that desired response.

Spaced out 15' to 20', waving torches and making noise, may "scare" lesser wolves into fleeing, or draw out the beasts.

Zavac nods at Kams' comment. "That they do. Not much else to do about it, it seems." After a few moments of consideration, "I've no idea as to why they'd take only one. It seems like a path for us to follow, rather than simply a private meal." His face takes on a slight grimness, as if the words he spoke made him ill.

Once the bodies were in place, he shots a quick prayer for them, "Sarenrae. Bathe these souls in your fire. Judge them by the light of the Sun. Heal those left to bear witness."

At Warren's signal, he nods at the request as acknowledgment, readying his flail. Catching each of their eyes, he states, "If they happen to attack, call out to me. I'll be of help." Then adding, almost as an afterthought, "Don't be alarmed by the fires."

"I will also stay," Tityanna says without hesitation. "I do not have martial talents, but if we are attacked in the open, I have access to spells which will be of greater assistance to a slow moving group than a quicker one."

Tityanna looks to Thad and nods. "Worgs are known for being crafty, but the intelligence shown by staying in one spot for several minutes," she begins and then looks to Alina. "Please do caution the others to be careful."

Warren whistles a two pitch call to recall the large eagle and continues the chase. "The noise may nullify and surprise and fire may work against us in this case."
I would think the eagles would typically circle above a ground threat with no missile weapons.
"This could indeed be an attempt at an ambush."

Male Human Ranger

Kams takes a moment to further scout the tracks, in an attempt to identify whether there were three beasts, or four. Also, he looks closely to see whether it was a living struggling victim, or one already deceased.

Perception:

Survival:

We will leave it to you and your plan, young Warren, but understand that should we face wargs over wolves, even three may well be more than a match for our band, be it ambush, feint, or fight. Such packs of beasts are known to hunt everything from deer, moose, and stag to man, bear, and tatzl-drake.

Kams sets his buckler tight to his left arm, holds his dagger ready in his left hand, and hefts his sword firmly in his right hand. Ali, give me luck, let me make you proud.

Master Kingeagle, lead the way, I will follow as you and your eagles direct.

Zevac and Kams:
Your quick search of the bodies finds little of use. There's a handful of coins totaling 15 gold crowns, 25 links, and 30 bits. Both wore standard leather jerkins and carried a short sword and simple dagger.

On the body behind the wagon you did discover a note and although much of it was ruined due to blood and rain you could make out enough to determine the man's name was Cerdig and he had family in Restov. The second man had a silver wedding band on his finger. An inscription on the inside reads 'May our souls never be parted.'

A few of the trade goods are salvageable. Three bundles of furs, four bundles of wool and a sealed barrel.

Stephanus:
Listening to Alaina's description it sounds like standard Brevian militia insignia, most likely the first or second Rostland Border Guards, since those are the regiments currently stationed in Restov and tasked with maintaining security in this region. They're not known for being the best equipped and trained, but they certainly aren't simple untrained peasant militia either.

As Thad beckons to Fulton, the man steps down from the wagon giving his wife a gentle pat on the arm. At the same time, Donal and Burdo come up to see what is happening and arrive as Thad relays his information to Fulton.

Although worried at the mention of Worgs and the grim scene up the road, none of the settlers panic. Instead they share the concern for Meyerson's children along with Miss Leveton and her governess. Fulton takes charge and orders the other wagons brought up and circled to provide a little security. Word is passed quietly about what is happening and the children are kept safely in the wagon. To provide a distraction, Andrea and Alexis work on fixing a cold lunch for the children and those who remain with the wagons.

Porter Deepsilver rummages around in his chests and brings out a small flask and some of the spare firewood. Carefully working for a few minutes he uses whatever is in the flask and soon has a fire going to provide a little warmth and sense of security.

Donal, Burdo, and Fulton all grab their weapons and work with the remaining charter bearers to defend the wagons in case there is trouble.
