Stephanus:
The creature is known as a Grig. A tiny fey, part humanoid, part cricket. They are most often good in nature, but insatiably curious and prone to jokes and trickery when they encounter mortals. Most volumes you've read describe the creatures as having the ability to fly as well as the innate magical ability to cast invisibility, entangle, and pyrotechnics. You also recall that fey of this nature can often be bribed or befriended with gifts of jewelry, alchohol, sweets, and/or some potions.

As Tityanna speaks and Stephanus moves toward the bandits, the camp is suddenly silent again. After a few seconds a small, feminine voice replies in Sylvan only a few feet from where Tityanna sits. "We mean no harm, sister. Only wonder why you travel south, with followers of the bad man captive? Fear you not the wrath of the bad man?"

Approaching the bandits, Stephanus can see one of the men trying to sit up, but he appears to be completely wrapped up in multiple layers of the tall field grass which covers the entire area. But even more odd, is the fact that his face is now a bright pink color, his hair a pale green, and his lips a shining turquoise. To top it off, a series of glittering, yellow characters are written across his forehead. All of this makes him appear like a rather demented and colorblind court jester.

A quick glance shows the other two bandits are similarly 'decorated'.

Female Human Sorceress (Fey) 1/ Oracle (Life) 1

Tityanna's eyes widened as she considered the grig's words. The bad man... Could He be agitating the fey as well?

Sylvan:

"Fright lends to courage in the hearts of those who would defend," Tityanna responds. "Does the bad man harm you and yours?"

A second voice speaks from the opposite side of Tityanna.

Sylvan:
"Some yes, some no. Mostly those who go near his house of sticks and stones. We stay away. Only play tricks on little bad men."

"Yes, yes." Chimes in the first voice. "Mustn't go near his home. The Catcher would get us. You stay away too, sister."

Stephanus can't resist laughing out loud at the sight of the bandits. He lowers the weapon and quietly completes the comprehend languages spell so he can understand the Sylvan being spoken. He defers to Tityanna.

Sorry for the delay, folks, bit of health problems, lately.

A catcher?

Stephanus, Perception DC 25:

"They say that our foe has a base of operations in the south. A house of sticks and stones. Likely far from the forest. They play tricks on the little bad men," Tityanna communicates.

Sylvan:

"Many thanks for your warning, lords and ladies. I regret I have not much to offer you by way of tribute, but if you return tonight, I may convince our folk to offer you hospitality."

The two voices bounce back and forth on each side of Tityanna.

Sylvan:
"You're welcome, sister. Be careful."

"Yes. Yes. Stay away from the Bad Man."

"We should go. Others might wake up."

"Oh! Little bad men in your care, not really so bad."

"Yes. Yes. Not so bad. Just simple, like most mortals."

"Trick will go away in a few weeks, until then, hope they make you smile sister."

"Yes. Yes. Pretty smile.

The sound of tiny laughter fills the air, along with the slightest scent of fresh roses. A few seconds later, Tityanna and Stephanus hear fluttering wings quickly disappearing into the early morning glow of approaching sunrise.

Tityanna's tone, though whispered, sounds amused.

Tityanna dismisses the message spell and walks to the prisoners, attempting to keep a smile off her face when she sees that they are decorated in motley.

"I do not believe any will be persuaded to execute the poor wretches wearing such faces," she says. She looks to the prisoners and addresses them specifically. "There are more who wish you alive than not. You will excuse us if we choose to keep you tied until our companions wake?"

Speaking low and excitedly to Tityanna as the fey disperse, "That's exactly why I left the stale heat of Oppara. For the chance to meet beings such as these. To see them first hand and make my own account of life beyond the edges of the map. Those Grig likely know alot about the wilderness we're about to plunge into. I think a friendship and alliance with them would be very much in our interest."

For the first time in a few days, those who are up early can actually see the sun rise above the hills. The air is chill, but the is sky clear and promising a return to warmer spring temperatures later in the day.

As the camp comes to life, it seems the bright morning light has restored the earlier hope and high spirits of the settlers. Andrea and Alexis Meyerson busily prepare a hot breakfast of flatcakes, smoked ham, and preserves. Burdo Deepsilver digs through his goods, and provides some kaffe for the group and soon its rich aroma is drifting through the camp.

Giggles can be heard from where the prisoners are kept, as Sari and the other younger Meyerson's catch sight of the colorful men while gathering up more wood for the fire.

Ursula, looking a bit more rested but still weary, steps over to Thad, and quietly tells the paladin that the bandit leader died during the night. "It's not too surprising." She says. "It was a terrible wound and he lost a lot of blood." Placing her hand lightly across his, she adds, "It was a valiant and honorable thing you did. I'm sorry, I wasn't able to save him."

Tityanna:
Sitting up from his bedroll, a slightly bleary-eyed Donal returns Tityanna's smile as she peers into his shelter. Futilely running his hands through his sleep tangled hair and beard he says, "Now that's a fine way to wake in the morning. With a beautiful face and bright smile being the first thing I see." After a quick yawn, he stretches revealing muscles in arm and chest built by hours of pounding iron at the forge. "Visitors? Sounds like you might have a tale to tell. Nothing too dangerous I assume, since the camp isn't roused."

With a glance at her shoulder he asks "How's the arm feeling?"

Kams rouses from his bedroll, feeling stiff and taunt from his ordeals yesterday. He works out a few of the kinks, gently stretching, then sets about clearing his gear and moves to attend to the horses. Noticing the excitement over the prisoners, Kams leaves off making mention or comment until the group is assembled to discuss the matter, as well as the fate of the prisoners.

Glad am I Ali the wee folk sought them out, and not me. May have to bed down closer to the others, not that it mattered for them.

Donal Egillson:

Tityanna colors and averts her eyes from the obvious display of masculinity, and giggles softly. "Oh, you'll understand when you see the bandits," she says. "And no, none too dangerous. For the majority. Presently," she continues to correct herself, coloring more deeply.

The catcher?

"Like my blood is molten fire," she answers his inquiry about her arm honestly, and sighs. "My magics obey my will and not the motion of my limbs. The pain is an... inconvenience, but my abilities are not adversely affected."

When the group gathers for breakfast, Tityanna stands to address them all.

"Our camp was visited by fey early this morning. The little lords and ladies of the wood have been watching the progress of our enemy, the 'little bad men' they call them, and know the location of 'the bad man,'" she reports. "He has a permanent structure, likely far from the wood as they've no cause to stray there, and some ally they call 'the catcher' who abducts our," Tityanna pauses and colors, "excuse me, their kind.

"I apologize for not waking the camp, but the lords of the wood are whimsical, and did not choose to show themselves to us. Stephanus and I agreed that maintaining a good rapport with them could be beneficial in the future."

"I wish I would have been awakened to meet his creatures. They are probably a natural creature I haven't seen." The look of disappointment is clear on Warrens face, but then he brightens..
"Tuney or Montey will find them, they are quite the hunters. I would be surprised if even the legendary fey can avoid their keen senses forever. Well, lets get this group to safety."

Warren helps them break camp and get on the way.

I will alwasy look back at the time with this caravan fondly.

As Tityanna finishes her tale of the night's adventure, the wounded Rostland guardsman walks over to the group. He looks a bit haggard. Face thin and pale, from having not eaten much over the last several days. His right arm is still in a sling, and the fabric of his tunic bulges from the thick bandages covering his chest. Several days growth of coal-colored whiskers cover his cheeks and chin, the color matching his hand brushed hair.

As he steps up to the group he offers a slight bow, hampered by the bandages and obvious pain as his face tightens into a brief grimace. With a gesture to Ursula who stands nearby he says, "The good lady has said it would be good for me to start moving around a little."

"Kesten Garess at your service. Allow me to express my thanks at your timely rescue. If not for you folk, my life would be forfeit. As it is, I've already lost my first command."

"Kesten, nice to meet you. This is the first day of the rest of your life. You can do a great deal to help us in the future."

Kesten bows his head at Warren, then with a chagrined smile and gesture at his bandages he says, "I won't be much help in a scuffle for a bit, but once I'm fit again, I'd be happy to help in any way I can."

Male Human Ranger

So, Master Garess, what was the duty of your command, and to where were you bound? We ourselves are headed onward, but would know more of you and your mission, what of it you are free to tell that is. For whom do you ride, and to whom is your service pledged?

Kams stands a little off from the group, as much to allow the others easier access to Garess as to keep an eye across the way to the fey stricken prisoners. It's not pretty, but it's a start. Let them feel through embarassment and ridicule the helplessness their victims felt through fear and loss.

The day continues to warm as the caravan breaks camp and gets under way. The sun and warm, mild breeze are a welcome change to the days of dreary rain and it is easy to see how the change has affected the settlers. The children run along side the wagons playing games of tag while Fulton, Donal, and Porter all sing a variety of marching songs they picked up over the years.

Ursula watches the side of the road for various herbs and plants that might replenish her now dwindling supplies. Although it's still a little early in the year, she is able to locate of couple of minor plants that help provide relief from cuts and bruises.

Overall the day passes uneventfully, until late in the evening. The road takes a turn to the east and you can see up ahead a wooden palisade sitting at the top of a low hill. The palisade stands about ten feet high with watchtowers at each corner that rise to twice that height. The post's single gate faces the road at the end of a short access track that leads back down the hill about fifty yards to the main road.

Currently the gate stands closed, and smoke rises from a fire burning somewhere behind the palisade. Two men occupy the towers facing the road. Every few seconds they fire an arrow toward a band of attackers, who are busy preparing a makeshift ram and set of mantlets to assault the gate.

Male Human Ranger

Quickly accessing the scene, Kams turns his horse towards the caravan. Thad, Tityanna, please protect the civilians. Bowmen, archers to the front. Ride to range and cover my approach. I will ride down the ram. We break that, they may turn and flee. Suprise and confusion shall reward us for a change. He pulls forth his hunting horn, it's sling still over his neck, his buckler secure upon his arm. He draws his blade, prepared to lead the way. Before he moves to ride and sound the charge, he first looks to the others for signs of comment or disagreement.

Warren quickly whispers to Kams, "The military situation is stable, the ram is a slow weapon, do not use that horn yet. Our most potent weapon is Tityanna's magical slumber--hopefully she can use it before being noticed. Maybe you can shield her from a wayward arrow. Thad, Tityanna, Stephanus and Alianna can all hurt them at range - they need to be up front on this with you. I'll stay by the caravan with Donal and Kesten."

Warren launches his eagles in the air and sends them after the men on the ram and readies his crossbow.

--earlier--

Thad woke from his evening meditations and climbed down from his hammock to enjoy the hearty breakfast and a mug of kaffe. He sighs deeply at Ursula's news and shakes his head. "Poor fellow, I'll pray for him..." He trails off as he notices how tired she still appears and passes her a mug of kaffe with a look of mild concern, "You look like you need this more than any of us, we are wearing you ragged with our injuries. I promise I'll do my best to not let any harm come to me today." He tells her with mock-gravity and the hint of a smile.

He meets Tityanna's news with a simple nod. In his wanderings the 'little lords' had proved more of a nuisance than anything else, prone to pranks and petty theft. He double-checks that all of his possessions are where he left them and counts himself lucky that Tityanna was the one who greeted their visitors and not him.

Thad greets Kesten's return to consciousness with honest happiness and does his best to assuage the man's guilt as he gets to know him. "Those wolves were bad business. If you and your men hadn't fought them then we never would have had a warning they were in the area. Your men's death was not in vain. They quite likely saved the lives of the twenty men, women, and children in this caravan."

--presently--

As he comes around the bend in the road the billowing smoke catches his eye first. He moves to string his bow when he notices the assault taking place at the gates and deliberately scans the area for any threats that are not immediately apparent as his companions plan their tactics.

Tityanna nods in agreement with Warren, smiling faintly. "Unfortunately, I cannot hold a shield of my own, and my injured wing has given me more than enough cause to consider how next I act."

Tityanna gestures to Kams upon his horse. "You will not need the horn to announce yourself to the enemies if you ride there on your horse," she says. "If they are desperate enough for supplies to lay siege to a small outpost, they'll simply kill you and steal your horse. Would it not be better to avoid detection and then thin their numbers from cover?"

Male Human Ranger

Kams simply looks at the group in stunned disbelief. He mulls over his options, debating his next action.

No, Master Warren, you should be with your flock. Ride forth with the others, bring honor to your aerie. I will stay and guard the caravan. It is apparent my skills are not what are needed here. Go, and good luck to you all.

Kams turns his horse and rides back towards the caravan, giving the outpost not another glance.

"No, Kams--you are suited to this fight more, the mobility of horsemen and range of capable archers tell here. I am neither. Keep Tityanna out of trouble and my eagles too."

Warren smiles. "Blow that horn when the attack starts to give courage to those in the outpost."

PER(DC15):
Looking closer, a tenth man is standing under cover of several trees watching over a small group of horses. The attackers all seem to be human, and are all dressed in the mismatched armor and blue cloaks similar to the ones you encountered before.

As the fight unfolds, the attackers have formed a central group along the road and appear to me making slow but steady progress toward the gate. There are a total of nine men on the attack. The formation of bandits is using the lightweight mantlets as cover as they steadily advance toward the gate with the ram. The ram itself is nothing more than a large tree cut from nearby woods. Two men positioned on the flanks use their own bows to return the fire the defenders.

Concentrating completely on their attack, none of the bandits have noticed the appearance of the caravan.

One of the bandits, spotting the action says in a surprised voice, "Whoa. Wonder what by the devils has got Kressle all fired up?" His companions both look on, the same puzzled expression on their own faces.

Kams suggests the caravan hold up at the half mile distance from the battle, wagons half turned in case things go south and the group needs to flee the area. Erastil, protect them, and grant your blessings upon those defending their hearth and kin.

He and Yori quickly check the harnesses and rigs of each wagon, making sure all is well and tight amongst the tack, more to keep the folks minds off the battle in the distance.

Turning to the commenting bandit, What do you mean, man? Are these men of your band? Was this not already planned when you were sent to delay us?

Spooks, bloodrobes, what kind of spell-slingers does the "Lord" have? Priests, mages? Do any of you even know the difference? Kams looks away a moment to see how the group is faring. He then returns his
stern visage to the prisoners.

So we have Cal, and Grubby, then there's you. Have a name do you? Kams levels a look at the man that has not spoken up. Head shaking slightly, You three will need to be earning your freedom from those folks about to do battle out there. Spitting once, then gesturing again to the others, Those folks fall, to spare this lot, I'll right quick do you myself. You'll be thinking my blade a mercy when those dark shadows are done with you. Turning slightly, to take in the battle to come, and still keep his eye towards the prisoners, Anything you have to say, this might be a fine time to start telling it. So's we jus try and keep as far away as we can. Why we joined up with Kressle. None of them folk skulking aroun' up 'ere. Not like further south."

The third bandit just kind of watches Kams for a few seconds. A blank look across his broad, chubby face as he breathes steadily. His gray eyes simply stare at the ranger, then he smiles broadly, ducks his head, and turns back to watch the coming fight.

Pointing his finger at his own head Cals says, "That's Dell. He don't speak much. A little slow, but he's good in a fight an' he don't cause trouble."

"Yeah, Dell's a good pal. We'z a team." Adds Grubby.

Rolling his eyes at the two other bandits, Cal leans over and spits to the side after Kams' words, "Your sword, the lord's sword, way I reckon, we've 'ad people trying to get rid o' us all are lives. I'm sorry for your lose, but all o' us have a past filled with death, hunger, beatings, and worse. We're not fanatics, like some of 'em. Just trying to survive."

He turns to watch the fight with the others and adds, "Told you all I know. You folk seem like the first decent lot I've met in these parts. Honestly, we're glad to be done with it and are willin' to try an' make amends. I'm rootin' for them jus' as much as you."

Bandits - 24
Warren - 19
Stephanus - 19
Tityanna - 16
Thad - 12
Kams - 10
Alaina - 6

The sudden outcry and demise of one of their companions causes the bandits to whip their heads around searching to find this new threat. Three of the men including the one standing behind the main group quickly spot Warren moving out in the open. With a quick shout he orders the two bandits on the flanks to deal with the new threat while firing an arrow himself. Fortunately for Warren, both bandits clearly rushed their shots and the arrows fly harmlessly into the weeds.

The defenders continue to spend ammunition, but do little damage.

Warren summons a dog as a gate opens 30' in front of him which immediately charges to AK17, Warren rushes to the cover of the foliage ahead.

It appears dog hits for 6, one eagle for 4

Stephanus grits his teeth and advances into the bandits' return fire. He stays trained on the near side as Aliana suggested. His hand finds another bolt, his foot the leather strap, and his crossbow draws again with a stride and a metallic click. The bolt is in place. The crossbow level with the enemy and adjusted for distance.

Then at the last second he reconsiders the shot and holds it. He calls out to his nearest friends. "If they drop that ram within bowshot of the stockade their attack is likely foiled. This lot will not have the courage to retrieve it under fire. Thieves love no one so much as themselves, so they will not stand for one another. That is why plans such as the one we see before us never work."

Gods I can't wait to get the pedantic lecture ability! :)

Five foot step to E34, reload crossbow and use naturalist performance to grant the others a +1 attack & AC vs humans.

Thad takes aim again and lets fly. Hopefully this surprise would be enough to break their momentum... if he were in their position he could hardly imagine himself holding to the ram while arrows rained down from both front and rear.

Attack @ bandits on near side of ram (B6?): 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 4 - 2 = 91d8 ⇒ 7
