stephan:
I'd view Iiwo generally as a useful source of knowledge of the natural world, survival skills, and comic relief. I'd like to add some native flavor by playing a Zenj tribesman and witchdoctor. I've never run an alchemist before, so the novelty is intriguing. I'm strongly leaning toward the Internal Alchemist archetype. In combat, Iiwo would be ranged support with his bombs and probably a sling, and as he raises levels, buffing and healing allies with infusions. I plan on using mutagens to raise dex for better ranged attacks.

Dangit, I knew I was forgetting a question, but I couldn't remember what! How about re-skinning a trait, like Boarded in the Mwangi Expanse becomes Raised by Ijo, but the crunch is the same?

I am ok with the trapper archtype from UM, giving up the spells is a big enough loss for the abilities you pick up.

Multiclassing is fine, depending on the build they can work out well of just water down a character :)
I would also most likely be ok with a slight change in a traits write-up t match your character background, although you would still need to let me know where you boarded as it has a little bit of impact on the beginning of the AP.
Since a PBP is more focused on the story and RP rather than just the battles I am not worried though about optimzed characters. Depending on the group, I plan to adjust the encounters a little or more depending on the groups strength.

Thanks for the summary as well. If I get enough strong entries I may close the recruiting on Tuesday instead of Wednesday, but we will see.

The Exchange

Interview:

A couple tables over from where Larissia is conducting her business, a scarred man and a half-elven woman sit quietly. Her hands folded on the table, the faint glint of metal showing beneath the hem of her cloak near her wrists. Her face is cast down, but the sight of a large bruise can be seen near her left eye. Black hair all but covers her slightly pointed ears. The man turns to her, whispers something then motions for the serving girl to bring him another ale.

She lifts her eyes to survey the crowd of this Chelaxian dock-side inn. A slight smile quickly vanishes as she slips back into her submissive role. Her wait is short as the serving girl sets down the ale and walks briskly away to another table.

Taking a sip of his ale, the man spins his chair around to better view the room, his cup sitting on the table behind him. Slender hands slip forward. A thumb moves slightly when the hands reach the cup then return to their place in front of the woman.

With a laugh, the man turns back to the half-elf, mutters something and downs most of the ale in a single, long drink. He sets the cup down and begins talking to her. His eyes blink.. blink again, and his head falls forward unmoving.

Reaching up, the woman pulls something from her hair and begins to fiddle with her wrists. In moments, a pair of manacles appear in her hands. With deft, careful moves, she slips them around the mans wrists and snaps them shut.

Bending over to pick up a pack, she slides the sheathed rapier and dagger from where they were tied and loops them through her belt. Grabbing the pack, she slips it on then walks over to the table where the others where hovering.

Pulling out a chair, as she sits, her left leg hooks the end of her rapier, positioning the hilt closer to hand. "Well, it is so good to be free of that man. Better than ending up on the slave block like he'd planned, no?" Her smile is warm and her voice friendly as her eyes gaze around the room, briefly coming to bear on Larissia.

"I hear you are looking for help. As you probably witnessed, I am in need to get out of this town. The sooner the better. I may be able to help you in return. Rarities and antiquities are my specialty. I would give a list of references however, I am sure that they would prefer to remain annonymous. Inquisitors tend to ask too many questions about items in one's possession, especially if their origin may be.. questionable."

She reaches up to pull her long hair back and quickly ties it into a loose tail. Standing, she shifts her pack a bit, eyes glancing around the room. Looking at the woman sitting at the table she says, "I'll be somewhere at the docks. Just whistle if you want my help. Either way, I intend to take the next ship out. I fear my welcome here is.. well.. overstayed." With a grin, she turns briskly to walk quickly from the inn. She pauses long enough to turn to Larrissia and say, "The name's Shilyn". Stopping by her former table, she deftly cuts the coin pouch from the scarred man on her way out the door, leaving him sleeping as if drunk.

Half-elf standard rogue

Interview:
The elf is impeccably groomed, his clothing and equipment speak of expensive tastes and the means to provide for them. He examines the dockside tavern with a critical eye before grimacing slightly and crossing the threshold and making his way directly to the Pathfinder...

You have to understand, ma'am, I have studied the Mwangi expanse for decades, every since I happened across a rendition of traditional Bonuwat tribal music. It is fascinating! I've read everything written on the area and interviewed dozens of travelers from the expanse; I am fluent in the local polygot and have been planning a journey there for some time. This crossing of paths is really quite serendipitous. I think you'll find my credentials as a scholar to be quite sufficient, but that is not all that I can do for your expedition.
I am a dreamspeaker, blessed by Desna Starsong with the power to send messages in dreams. If I hire on with your expedition I am willing to send weekly messages on your behalf, to appraise your society of the mission's progress or simply to reassure a loved one left behind. Also, I'm an experience traveler and I have tried my had at a little bit of everything over the years- from a stint at sailing to a few years as a teamster, you'll rarely find me idling around when there's work to be done.

Crunch is on the character page. I used the APG dreamspeaker racial option and the Archivist bard variant. Best suited for the Aracane Investigator job; can be of great help to the naturalist, ruin delver, and scout. And it never hurts to have a bard along to help pass those long days at sea...

Balodek, no comments or questions for you right now. Waiting for most of the submissions before I try to make any decisions, but your character submisson was fine I have seen witches in action and even played one for 1-4th level so I am pretty familiar with them. Thanks, Stephen.

DM Stephan - I'm assuming that all is well with my sub, but if you have any questions - just let me know :)

Looks like a lot of good submissions on the Recruitment floor - don't envy the decision ;)

No questions Mark, not looking at the charaters too much until I make some decisions, just reviewing interviews and backgrounds and doing a little digging into people's posts with their other characters to get a sense of what type of poster they are.

BTW if anyone is new to PBP, feel free to let me know. I wouldn't mind saving a slot or two for new folks to get some new blood into the game.

Thanks, Stephen

DM Stephen:
Only played PbP (or Pathfinder for that matter) one other time in a still-active game. Current game to give you an idea of how I play. having a blast, but looking for a 2d game. New to Pathfinder / PbP but am an experienced RPG player.

This looks like a well-conceived, organized campaign. I post often and will not slow anything down.

I'll post the interview and the character concept. Don't like to do a full write up until I'm in as I don't like to have too many aliases. This character is conceived for this campaign.

Interview:
Ole...Ole Ivarson.

Yes, I'm Ulfen. I come from the north to see the lands south.

Yes. This is the symbol of Old Deadeye. I'm one of his people.

You know old Deadeye's people. Yes. I'm good with the bow. Hunt with it, fight with it, sleep with it.

Your notice said you were looking for a man that can fight and that can scout. I can do both. I'm as good as two men. I have eyes like a hawk and through Erastil's gift I can judge a heart, be it man or beast, as good as any. There are few better men to travel with than one of Old Deadeye's faithful.

Old Deadeye believes in a man's word. I give my word that my bow, my body, and my eyes will be yours while we travel together, though my soul's sworn to Old Deadeye.

The pay is fair. No man should ask for more than what he's earned. And every man should do his share.

I thank you for your time, Miss Landor. May Old Deadeye give you the wisdom to make a wise choice. Going into the wild with those you can't trust is unwise. Nowhere is trust needed more than when a man has nothing but himself and his companions to rely on for survival. No one is more trustworthy than Old Deadeye's folk. Remember this when you choose. Good day.

Character Concept:
LG Human Inquisitor of Erastil with the Animal (Feather) Subdomain. Main weapon will be Longbow. Stats will be evenly spread. He wants to explore new places to walk all the untamed wild lands as his god Erastil has done from the ancient days.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32

DM Stephen:

I'm quite new to PbP and to RPG's in general; I have only played PC RPGs before. I've discovered the PF RPG and these boards about a month ago and I've applied to about 10 games since then, but only one of them has really kicked off (You can see my posts here), while two others are on hiatus.
I can easily post multiple times a day, but I live in the Euro timezone (GMT+2), so I intersect with the US posters on mornings and evenings. I regard my writing skills in English as at least OK, but I am not particularly fond of making long posts full of flavor, which don't contain any decision-making or die-rolling. I am willing to adapt to the group's pace, though.

Started a Kingmaker PBP, but got past first encounter and GM disappeared on us.

Sorry to hear it, it happens all too often. Its happened to me as well.

I can't guarantee anything in life but I can say that something that that will not happen here...I am running this in a tabletop game with my group of 10+ years and we just finished chapter 1.

I have lots of new goodies for a group from my "test" run that should make this memorable and fun for all!

I'm am fairly new Pathfinder but not RPGs played D&D up until 4e came out (It is really bad) most recently (two months back) I discovered PF and now play that instead I run 3 games on this web and am playing another and hopefully this one soon, run one In real life too.

Looking to submit a character later tonight, jsut need time to really finalize my concept before posting.

Submitting Nora, a Human Cleric of Desna. I can very consistently post though I have not managed to play by post here before, so I may need a little hand-holding in that regard. Otherwise I'm a pretty RP intense player, and this campaign looks neat(plus my friend told me that this adventure is one of the best Paizo has ever published).

Interview:
My name is Nora, Nora Kettlesmith if you want my family name, though I tend not to go by it very often. Not that I don't appreciate my family and all, it's just I suppose I'm not too tied to it. So you um.. wanted to know why I wanted to go on your expedition and what help I could be right? Well I'm a priestess of Desna, though no need to worry with titles or what-not. I don't think it needs much explanation what help one of the faithful of Desna can be on a journey, but yes I've travelled, travelled to plenty of places and where your going, well I haven't been yet, than again not many people have right?

So what can I do. Well I'm a good healer, both magically and in the more mundane sense, and I'm used to being on my own so nobody needs to look after me. I can hold my own in a fight if it comes to that. I get along real easy with all kinds of people. If your group ends up half as colourful as some of the figures running through this port, well I'm sure I can get on with all of them. Dwarven Mercenaries, Chelaxian Merchants, Katapeshi pilots and Elven Wizards and Veterans of Lastwall. I pride myself on being personable. Doesn't that sound like the sort you want along on this sort of thing? I mean after a while it might not be whats outside the camp you really got to worry about most, people in cramped quarters and all.

So yeah, that's about it I suppose. The Goddess favours the bold and the adventurous, and I would be really happy to bring what I can.

Stephan - I'm afraid Doctor Iiwo must withdraw from consideration. I just got picked up in another PbP. This normally wouldn't be an issue, but it is also coincidentally a Serpent's Skull campaign. Best of luck in your game - I'll be following along!

Application List as it stands (apologies if I have anything incorrect or misrepresented):
Lord oKOyA (guaranteed spot but flexible) - leaning Druid - leaning Naturalist
Wareagle / Norlannan Tigersoul the Ranger - Elf Ranger - Scout
Doctor Iiwo (withdrew) - Mwangi Alchemist - Naturalist
Mark Sweetman - Half-Orc Inquisitor - Bodyguard / Healer
Fredrik - Halfling Ranger (Trapper) - Scout / Ruins Delver
Marik Whiterose (withdrew) - Chelaxian Wizard (Diviner) - Arcane Investigator
Jarvis Seacutter - Elven Rogue - Ruins Delver
Kalis Daen'ith - Elven Barbarian (Invulnerable Rager) - Scout
mittean - Human Monk (Master Of Many Styles) / Magus - Bodyguard
markofbane - ? - Healer? or Arcane Investigator?
Raal Saikhan - Human Samurai (Standard Bearer) - Bodyguard
Scaragoth / Magamumi - Human Witch - Healer / Naturalist
loimprevisto - Elven Bard - Arcane Investigator
flykiller - Fighter (Free Hand Fighter) - Bodyguard
Kaylee Veridian - Half-Elf Cleric (Gozreh) - Naturalist
Balodek - Elven Witch - Healer / Arcane Investigator
Tarith Ordin - Dwarven Ranger (Guide / Skirmisher) - Bodyguard / Scout
Groth - Human Magus (Bladebound) - Arcane Investigator / Bodyguard
Ridley Blix - Halfling Bard (Archaeologist) - Ruins Delver
Shilyn D'Sable - Half-Elf Rogue - Ruins Delver
Maddigan - Ulfen Inquisitor (Erastil) - Scout / Bodyguard
MundinIronHand - ?
Wise Owl - Human Cleric (Desna) - Healer

I'm going to step outside of the usual practice and nitpick a bit, constructively I hope. With any luck, some of you might be my teammates soon, so... yeah. I'll be nice. :)

Scaragoth / Magamumi:
As best I can tell, 11,10,12,18,16,11 would be a 24-point buy for a human, instead of 20.

Ridley Blix:
I'm pretty sure that 8,16,8,14,12,16 is a 15-point buy for a halfling, instead of 20.

Kaylee Veridian:
That seems to be a level 2 character, where the rest are level 1.

DM Stephen:
I appreciate the feedback! I've realized that the ranger/cleric of my dreams would be pretty watered-down, so I'll focus. The stats are pretty much done, so now I just have to write out the background and personality that have been percolating in the back of my mind. If I don't finish it tonight, then I will tomorrow.

Good luck all!

ETA: Updated with the fact that I intend to submit a halfling trapper for scout and ruins delver, since I didn't mean to be coy about that. Just haven't done it yet.

Hi, Fredrik, I'm afraid you're not taking Magamumi's age into consideration. She may have slowed down a bit -- eight children does that to you -- but she's now wiser, more knowledgable and better at dealing with people than you young whippersnappers.

D'oh, I must have gotten confused when I applied to another game as well that was starting at level 2. My bad, I'll readjust the sheet to level 1 shortly.

<blushes> That didn't even occur to me, since I never had a character make it that far, and never thought to start one out that way. My apologies, honored mother. :)

Here's my submission for arcane investigator, an elven wizard.

Interview:

Spoiler:
A modestly dressed elf sits down across from Ms. Landor. Good evening. Quite a crowd here tonight. I’m Trageshen. I heard a cryer announcing your needs, and I think this is quite serendipitous timing. I’ve actually just come from a dozen years going up the east coast: Nex, Katapesh, Osirion, Thuvia… collecting information about the Azlanti and the Mwangi Expanse. All told, I spent the better part of a century and a half collecting lore, and I would be quite wiling to put it to use for you. You see, I’ve recently run into a spot of trouble… In Katapesh, some unscrupulous folks. Well, I had some arcane tricks up my sleeves to get clear of the problem, but nearly all of my material possessions were lost in the process. Oh, no big deal, I know. I’ve had to start over in a similar fashion probably half a dozen times in my life. But the potential of this outing stands to speed that up quite a bit. My needs are truly modest and I’m easy to work with. And not to brag on myself, but I truly due know a bit about most things. I’ve worked so many odd jobs over the years I’ve lost count, but I remember everything. And I do have some mastery of wizardry. At the moment my repertoire is a bit limited; I’m still rebuilding my spell book after – I did mention the Katapesh incident already I know so I see no need to elaborate. Suffice to say I could certainly serve as an arcane investigator for you.

Questions and character basics.
Spoiler:
Tragershen is an elven wizard (universalist) with a bonded object. He’ll start with the Breadth of Knowledge feat, so he’ll have a decent score in all knowledge skills. He’ll have the Boarded in Cheliax trait to reflect the extra time he’s spent recently studying the region.

Is Azlanti a viable language option,? Do you allow starting money to go toward potions and/or adding extra spells to the starting spell book (at 35gp for each first level spell)?

Spoiler:

Azlanti (written) I am going to say is available. You will have to make a linguistics check to try and speak any of it for anyone to understand. Another language you might want to consider is Aklo.
Spells/potions are fine with your cash, it is yours to equip yourself with.

Just an FYI, I am not too worried about the specifics of your characters until I finish with the character selection process, then I will do a more thorough check.

Having the basics is enough for me to get a flavor of what your character will look like. Most important is the interview and the background, in that order. Thanks everyone, looks like quite a few good players and character submissions, this will be a tough choice.

@ Fredrik, thanks for the list, I would post your character today if possible. I would like to cut off the list tonight at 10:00pm EST so I can make my choices tomorrow and re-read any submissions.

Fixed now. Thanks for the catch Fredrik. :)

Fredrik...thanks for the catch. I was playing this character in another game that our DM had to bow out of, and only gave it a quick once over before sending her this way.

Probably need to make sure the background makes sense too eh?...

I just realized that I had submitted my interview, but not my background...

Background:
About seventy years ago Dolelan found his soul mate. They met several times over the years in dreams and finally recognized each other on the road near Magnimar. They traveled together for decades and were divinely happy exploring every corner of Golarion- until they were set upon by bandits while passing through a troubled region of Isger. The bandits were little more than rabble who preyed on travelers and merchants, but misfortune struck and Dolean was alone again.

For a long while, he just... drifted. He went through the motions of day-to-day living but refused to grow close to anyone. After losing many friends to old age and his wife to violence, Dolelan just passed his time in various large cities and libraries and spent a few months or a few years at whatever caught his attention- eventually settling in Greengold.

Prodded by restless dreams of distant drum beats, he has slowly begun to recover his passion. Dolelan made his way down the river to the inner sea and has been exploring Cheliax en route to the exotic reaches of the Mwangi Expanse.

Suddenly the door opens loudly and in walks an Elf, dressed in dark robes with golden trim. With an air of superiority he surveys the room, then heads towards Larissa Landor

"So Miss, I hear you are gathering a group of fools, forgive me.. advenuters...to search for ancient Azlanti ruins. If your going to delve into the mysteries of the Azlanti, you will need my assitance. Of course I am Elros Ar-Feiniel, famous scholar and practiioner of the arts. No doubt you've heard of me, the many spells at my disposal and the battles I have won. And let's not forget my extensive research on Ancient civilizations and ruins."

Spoiler:
now time to work on background, stats and such.

Thought I should get my submission in before the deadline. ;)

Interview:
After most of the other applicants have made their pitches to Larissia and have moved on, a human man of indertminate heritage makes his way to her table from where he has been watching nearby with interest. He wears the garb of a man used to living in the wilds. His fair hair is long and uncut, but is not entirely unkempt, tied back by a simple leather band. His skin is deeply tanned, his frame is sturdy and his hands calloused, indicating a life spent working and living in the outdoors. He wears rough buckskin leathers adorned with a nature motif. The only weapon currently on his person is a handmade dagger. As he draws near Larissa, he bows slightly in greeting before speaking in a deep smooth tone. The blessings of Father Sun, Mother Earth and Brother Moon be upon you! Those that insist on calling me something use the name Nim. I have come to claim the position of naturalist in your expidition. I am expierienced in the ways of the wilderness. My skills will surely be a boon to you on your endevor. I possess intimate knowledge of both flora and fauna, encompassing the lands of ice and snow to the lands of the burning sky, and everywhere in between. My affinty to, and my ability to handle, the animals that prowl those areas untouched by men will be necessary if you wish to suceed in your venture, Pathfinder. I am relatively quiet, speaking only when necessary. Observent, hard working and reliable. I am used to working both on my own and also as part of a larger group. I will cause you no grief should you honor my request to join. He pauses to study Larissa further before continuing, I have only one question before I join, if you would indulge me ... am I required to accompany you back here from this excursion when it is successfully completed?

More to come later... :)

Just curious, don't really want a poster in 2 AP's on-line. Let me know, thanks. Stephen.

DM Stephen:
Not 100% sure the character is dead. She's negative hps but stabilized (along with two other PCs) in a very bad spot. The mage got away to get help. Still awaiting final resolution. Will he make it on time? Is this the end of our daring trio? Tune in again next week.. heh.

Given that it's not fully resolved, I'll withdraw my application. If the character is dead, please keep me in mind if you need a filler for later :)

Thanks for your consideration. Sounds like you're going to have a very interesting game. Good luck!

Reviewing the entries but probably won't finalize decisions until tomorrow around lunch in case there are any last minute submissions.
Thanks everyone for your submissions.

Arglbargl! Silly me did the background last night instead of the interview, but I need to know who a character is to roleplay him. So here we go!

Interview:
A halfling, tanned and dressed like a sailor in cut-offs, suddenly climbs up out of the crush of the crowd and stands on the chair opposite her.

"My lady, I have heard of your requests, and I am certain that we can help each other. You want to explore Azlanti ruins, and so do I. You need someone who can scout the wilderness and ruins alike, and that's me." He leans forward.

"Look at me. You see a slave collar? Of course not, because I earned my freedom fighting in the forests between Molthune and Nirmathas. I know how to get along in a wilderness with no supplies behind me and enemies in front, and how to avoid their devious traps." He smiles fiercely.

"I know how to get along in lots of places from my travels, and how to survive. I have a fondness for Sargava and the Mwangi, because of my time with the Ijo. I also know how to deal with the underground because of some early fortune-hunting gigs, but this isn't about that." He waves his hand.

"I believe in your mission of re-discovering lost Azlanti lore. I'm good at escorting goods to safety, and I've been paid well for that. I think it's time for me to tackle something more meaningful; and scouting ahead for you, whether for wildlife in the jungle or traps underground, is something that I'd be real good at." He straightens proudly on the chair to his full 3'1" of height.

"I thank you for your consideration. If you want to reach me, just ask for Anton at the Treasure Chest -- though you might have more luck asking for the Bosom Booty, as the locals apparently have a sense of humor." He rolls his eyes.

Background:
Anton Green knew from the moment that he was old enough to know something that he was meant for something better than tending the tender greens behind the big house. This led to a conviction that he was meant for better than to be a slave like his parents, so he snuck out and joined the army as a green recruit one day when he had the chance. It turned out that the Molthune army had a lot of uses for sneaky halflings in the green woods on the border with Nirmathas, and so his freedom five years hence was well-earned.

Loving his freedom, Anton used it well, traveling the world over. He eventually found kindred spirits for awhile in the native Ijo fishers of Sargava's Desperation Bay, enjoying the idleness in the sun and the work in the weather alike. However, they fought a losing battle underwater against sahuagin that settled in the ruins of the sunken Chelish fleet. Vowing to find a way to help his favorite people defeat their monstrous foes, he began running the circuit between Sargava and Avistan, protecting cargo in exchange for money and a chance to meet new people of all different kinds.

Not finding any word of a sure weapon against his hated enemy, Anton turned his ear to uncertain rumors telling tales of old Azlanti treasures lost in the jungles. From there, it was just a matter of finding someone else seeking something similar, since the one thing that he knew for sure was that people who entered the Mwangi Expanse alone rarely returned intact... if at all.

Crunch:

Niɱ, if you're anything like me then you'll only end up annoying yourself, trying to type a name (such as Nicolæ) with a character that isn't on your keyboard. Speaking from personal experience. I mean seriously, having to copy/paste a character in my own character's name? The name was cool; the process wasn't.

Perhaps he has a Mac, iPad or iPhone, in which case typing names like Nicolæ, Cœlestis, Sân Fŗañçißčò, can be done with ease right from the keyboard. Or, of course, he might just be working on a different keyboard layout. ;-) :-p

Sân Fŗañçißčò?! Okay, now you're just showing off. :p But seriously, my understanding is that Steve Jobs changed computing forever due to "dropping in" (as opposed to "dropping out") at Reed College here in Oregon, and learning about fonts and things from a calligraphy class. So it's actually plausible, that my own frustration is just from working in Windows. In which case, never mind?

Magamumi tries not to look smug, but unfortunately there's something about the cast of her face that makes her look like a particularly self-satisfied bullfrog attempting to stifle a smirk in church...

Fleshed out some more of Ole's background just in case I get in and as an exercise in character building. I'm going to be taking the Get the Cargo Through trait with this background.

Background:
Ole's from an Ulfen village to the north next to the Steaming Sea and in the Land of Linnorm Kings that lives by way of the seas. Fisherman and merchants are common trading in furs, whale products, bone, walrus tusks, and the like. His family were guards on the Ulfen longships that travesed the high seas keeping thieves from stealing the cargo and helping the captains ensure they didn't bring on a thief or that another ship wasn't full of evil brigands looking to rob them. Ole's family were known to be strong in the faith of Erastil and to have a keen eye as to the character of a man.

Ole was a restless youth. He often wanted to travel. So after speaking with his father and some of the other captains, he offered to take some of their wares south and see if he can find some new folk to trade with and new items to benefi the community. He's been traveling a bit and this is one of the first opportunities he's had to get on with a ship heading further south. His goal is see the southern wild lands as well as open new trade routes. He's very curious to explore ancient ruins and see other wild places with new animals and plants he's never much seen.

The restless Ulfen blood in his veins drives him, the same blood that drove his people to spread all over Golarion. He'll not rest until he's seen as much of the world as he can in a short mortal life. Maybe he can bring tales for the skalds to tell about the fire of Ole and his travels in the southern lands.

The smile on Magamumi's face flickers, but then reasserts itself with an unnatural rigidity. A fine silk rag is drawn from one of her myriad pockets, and dabs gently at her unexpectedly moist eyes. She vehemently swears, however, to any concerned passersby that she's absolutely fine, thank you very much, there's just something in her eye, and to stop making a fuss.
