Been a player quite a while on these boards and I am in several great games.

Decided it is time to give back to a group of players. I am currently GM'ing a tabletop Serpents Skull game and have time to add a PBP game. As a dedicated PBP'er I would appreciate applicants to be the same.

Here are the basics:

20 point buy.
2 traits, 1 must be from the SS players guide
Starting gold is max, you are being equipped somewhat
Core classes, races, and books. APG okay, other races, classes, spells or content will be allowed on an approval basis only.
Not a big fan of firearms or summoners so please don't submit one if you wish to be sonsidered.
Must be able to post 1-2 times daily, I am a frequent poster and would like to find player of like intentions.
Will be running 5 characters for this campaign, 1 slot is spoken for.
Submissions will be accepted until midnight 11/23/11. I hope to start the game on 11/28/11.

Submissions will be evaluated upon a slightly different criteria. Most submission are evaluated on background. I would like a small background but I would like you to spend your time/effort responding to the Pathfinder who is driving this expedition in a manner like an interview via a spoiler. Why should she pick you over someone else? The idea would be to weave your back story into why you would work well on her team. The best overall submissions will be chosen. See below for the intro and positions you hear about that she is seeking to fill:

Here Ye Here Ye!

Pathfinder Larissia Landor is seeking brave adventurers to accompany her for great discovery and wealth! Her mission is to explore an uncharted island to search for Azlanti ruins rumored to be on the island. Pathfinder Landor is seeking adventurers to fulfill the following jobs…

Bodyguard – Must be trained in weapons and combat, this job is to protect Ms. Landor’s person.
Scout – Must be able to live in the wilds, hunt, identify local dangerous wildlife, and have keen eyes.
Naturalist – Have a depth of knowledge about local flora and fauna. Must be able to deal with dangerous wildlife as well as assist in navigating the interior of the island.
Arcane investigator – Arcane knowledge is a must. Assist in identifying Azlanti ruins, script, magical barriers or spells. Assist in identifying more rare and exotic forms of life and cast arcane spells to assist the team.
Healer – Physician and surgeon for the group, assist with any wounds the teams members might suffer.
Ruins Delver – Must have skill to notice and disable ancient traps that might exist in the ruins, must be able to move with stealth to help scout both in the jungle and in the ruins.

Pay will be based upon an equal share of treasure found plus some equipment funds. Potential bonus for successful find of Azlanti ruins and the information brought back to the Pathfinder guild.

When you meet Pathfinder Landor she is meeting with various adventurers in a local dockside tavern. You pull up a chair and start to tell her your story...

In case you are wondering here is an example of a little of what I am expecting:

The name is Baggs Degrin mam'. Me shipmates called me Baggs. Well before they all got themselves dead that is. You see I was a mate on the Shrew. We wus on honest ship tradin and such. But the Captain was a real piece o' work. He was a slaver and thought us crew not much better. The captain used to bring me stuff, complex stuff. You see I have a natural knack for sneakin, and for finding the bad stuff, like poison and traps. You bring me along and you won't ave any worries about that kind of stuff. I am a survivor as well. I got the luck! Our ship wus attacked about 4 days out of port by pirates. My luck got me off the ship as she wus captured. The crew gotta be all dead but I grabbed me a barrel and set out on the water rather than being cut open like a fish.
Not three days later a schooner found me! Now that is the luck. You will see, bring me on this trip an' you 'll ave nothing but luck I tell ya! I can do the job...of scout or ruins delver or both. Give me a chance you will see mam!

Go ahead and post any questions you might have and feel free to check out my alias' for the type of campaigns I am in and expect to bring to this group of adventurers. Thanks for the consideration!

Dotting for later submission!

Dotting for interest thinking of elf/half elf ranger be back with details later.

I'll be watching this one buddy :)

Dotty dot.

Out of interest - has the player with a guaranteed spot indicated what they will be playing?

DM Stephan:
Have spoilered to avoid derailment of thread - would you be open to a Neutral cleric / inquisitor / oracle of an evil god? I have two possible patrons:

Zon-Kuthon - character would be LN - focused on the pain aspect and sensation.

Charon (Horseman of Death) - character would be TN - the god is the patron of death by old age, so the character would be drawn to ensuring that people live through to meet that end.

No evil acts would be carried out and the character would be committed to seeing the venture succeed. I'm just drawn to the potential for more interesting RP :)

Here is Norlannan elf Ranger used an old character concept of mine :)
P.S. this is Wareagle

That would be me. (Thanks again for the invite Stephan!)

I am leaning towards druid at this point... meaning I would most likely fill the naturalist role. With tweaking I could fill one of the other roles of course, and can change entirely to fill any spot. I was going to wait until others submitted before making a final decision, but since you have asked...

Cheers!

And good luck to all those who submit! I am confident it will be a great game!

A small, wiry Zenj man shuffles up to the table. He’s wizened, perhaps a few years beyond middle age, with a bald head and his thin whiskers turning grey-white. He wears a zebra-hide jerkin, a necklace of feathers, animal teeth and polished stones, and has a skillfully carved darkwood box hanging at his side on a shoulder sling. The man smiles widely, showing off the many gaps of his missing teeth, and gives a little bow. He speaks in a high pitched, yet soft tribal accent. “Good day, madam. I am Doctor Iiwo, of the Mulaa. It is my great pleasure to make your acquaintance. It has come to my attention that you are in need of a Naturalist for an upcoming expedition to the interior. I would be most appreciative if you would consider my application to this effort, which based on your obviously discerning character is certain to be supported by an esteemed group of professionals.” He pauses and smiles again, unselfconsciously, even though it’s not a flattering expression. “I do not wish to ‘toot my own horn’ (he chuckles at his colloquialism) but I am certain that you will find me to be most knowledgeable of both the beasts in the field and the plant-life in the ground. I dare say I have been a practicing herbalist since before you were born, and in my extensive travels as the witchdoctor for my nomadic tribe I have learned to reliably identify edible and medicinal plants from poisons all along the interior to Kalabuto.” He leans forward close, his breath smelling of fermented pineapple, “Of course, you ask yourself - But can this old man handle himself amongst the many dangers of the Mwangi?” He lets out another chuckle that sounds more like a giggle. Don’t you worry! Doctor Iiwo is not without certain protections.” He pats his darkwood box reverentially, almost lovingly. “Yes, I am a survivor, and I know this land like the back of my hand. If you were to do me the honor of taking me on as your Naturalist, I can assure you that you will not regret it.” (Dr. Iiwo is an alchemist)

Edit: Hmm. Doctor Iiwo is sad. I just noticed the above post. I suppose he could also fit as the healer with a little tweaking if the naturalist slot is taken. I'd be happy to do that by maybe multiclassing with oracle.

Heh - thanks for clarifying Lord oKOyA, helps to know who to fold around.

Just to get it stated, I'm looking to put forward a Half-Orc Inquisitor capable of filling the Bodyguard and Healer roles, as well as assisting on Arcane Investigator. Will finalise when I get an indication from the good DM to my spoilered question :)

Dark Archive

No worries Doctor Iiwo... this is why I left out my submission details in the first place. I can likewise tweak things to fill other roles. A druid can realistically fill any of the 1st 3 roles with the right build. Or I can change my submission entirely.

Good luck!

PS. You are welcome Mark. :)

Interview:
A scrawny surprisingly short Short elf shuffles over to the table. He is very young for an elf, he wears a stern look almost all the time, with long white locks and pure green eyes, several scars mark his face as a result of past conflicts he wears a finely crafted suit of leather and keeps a piece of cloth around his neck he gives a slight bow before seating himself."Larissia I presume Pleasure to make your acquaintance. I am Norlannan Tigersoul the bold and stern Ranger and I just might be able to cover some roles for your "little" upcoming expedition, Though my talents are limitless it has come to my attention you are in need of a scout and that's were I come in, Years of experience In tracking scouting and hunting of orcs slain dozen in my experience all you need are the right skills and the right man. You need a tracker I'm your man what do you say eh". Norlannan pauses and leans forward in his chair and puts on a less serious look. "Give me the Chance and I will see that your job is made one hell of a lot easier." Norlannan seems to avoid including the part were he's broke and only headed for riches and treasures and seems to over exaggerate his skill and avoids telling anything of his life past or why he came to join the expedition. He could also assist in bodyguard and Naturalist roles.

I was in a (now defunct) game with Mark Sweetman and can definitely endorse him as an active poster and interesting roleplayer. Also: dotting for a possible submission myself. ;)

The dream is always the same.

I'm flying over a verdant carpet of trees as far as the eye can see. Below me, scattered among the trees, are ruins far older than imagining. As I travel I come to a simple village located in a clearing in the jungle. After landing in the village I am ignored by the dark skinned natives. All, except one. A wizened old man with the universe in his eyes looks at me, no, through me. He leads me to the edge of the village where two paths lead off into the jungle. He says to me "One path leads to Power and Right, the other to Might and Darkness. It is up to you to decide which is the right path for you." As I look into those ageless eyes I never get the chance to decide as I always awaken.

Ever since he was a young boy Marik Whiterose has been haunted by a recurring dream. It is this dream which has shaped his life. It was this dream which caused Marik to specialize in Divination magic in an attempt to discover it's meaning. It was this dream which led him to try to discover all he could about the Mwangi expanse and all it's environs, even creating a highly detailed map of the region. It was this dream that caused him to book passage aboard the Jenevire after graduating from the Academy.

I'll get to work on the interview tomorrow, now it's time for bed.

Bio:

My name is Norlannan. I appear to be your average run of the male elf, but as always with most stories like this, that's not true. I start off my tale with a little insight about my appearance, both seen and unseen. At glance you'd notice I stand 5'6 and weigh a mere 89 pounds. I have white hair and dark green eyes. First I must tell you about my unseen appearance. Underneath my clothes and armor there lies an elven body that houses many emotional scars of both love and war.

If you have ever had the chance to meet me and possibly become an acquaintance then you would notice that I always wear a piece of cloth around my neck, always. Underneath this cloth is the only physical scar on my body. For those who have the privilege of becoming one of my few friends you will find out the story about this scar of mine.... But then again, this tale would be incomplete without it.

It all started when I was a young adult, I was spending the day sparring with my master as I did a lot back then. My master, Altalis, was a great man. He taught me how to do almost everything I can do today. He was a big influence on my life and if given the choice I would have spent the rest of my childhood with him learning everything he was willing to teach me. Well on this day a strange new elf appeared in town.

The elven village I lived in, Trangoul, was populated by 140 or so elves but we all could pretty much tell when a new face arrived. He seemed a bit suspicious but the fact was he was new in town and most new comers are looked upon with some caution. Well later that day a scout came rushing into town right to the Hall of Council. Almost as soon as the door slammed shut behind him did a huge barrage of arrows come flying into town. My master and I ran for cover towards his house, about halfway there we noticed a huge group of orcs were rushing from that side of town. We both immediately ducked between the 2 nearest buildings and hid.

I noticed that these orcs had surrounded the village in a huge ring and had all charged into town after the arrows ceased. Most of the men who took up arms were shot up with arrows, those who chose to try and flee were killed by the orcs. After a small battle the orcs were victorious and rounded up all the bodies and brought them to the center of town where that suspicious elf was waiting.

I told Altalis that I was going to sneak up closer to see what was happening. I crept up to a small ditch and covered myself up with some of the surrounding terrain. I noticed that this elf was going through the victims one by one and with a small dagger was cutting the back of their necks. He went through all the slain elves and the women and children who couldn't fight were then brought to him, he did the same thing to them. After doing so he ordered an orc to execute the elf that was just cut. After a couple dozen more elves were killed, an orc came rushing into the center carrying an elf with him. He was talking about how he found the elf hiding in an alley. I thought to myself "Oh no! Altalis!".

I started to crawl closer and closer until I could see the elves face. It was Altalis. I had to do something, I had to save him. I quickly and quietly rushed back to Altalis' house and went into his small armory room that he had. I searched around frantic looking for something very special... then I found them, Altalis' rapiers. I took them out of their case and rushed back to the ditch as quick as I could without making noise.

As I got closer I could see the strange elf cutting the back of Altalis' neck, I decided to ditch silence for speed and started running with all my might, I saw one of the orcs closest to him raise his axe, with a loud yell I screamed out "ALTALIS!!". With that, every eye in the village was on me, I had both rapiers clenched tight in my hands. A couple orcs rushed me and cornered me, I slashed and stabbed at them connecting with a few of them, but I was no match for these beasts.

One grabbed 1 of the rapiers while another pummeled me to the ground. They tied me up and brought me over to the mysterious elf. He took his dagger, which glowed of blue, and cut into my neck. I did not scream, no way was I going to let these monsters have the pleasure of hearing my pain. My eyes began to water a bit but I did not cry. I looked over at Altalis, he was in bad shape, barely able to keep his eyes open. I looked around for the other elves, but they were nowhere around. I feared they had finished them all off.

I noticed that strange elf was standing there eyeing me and Altalis. He began to walk towards us. As he approached he unsheathed his glowing dagger. I knew what he was going to do with that dagger, we were both done for. Then my ear started to tingle. I heard something. I heard footsteps. They were footsteps alright but they were to light to be orcish feet.

Just then I heard something else... HWSHHHHH! I dropped to the ground and laid flat. Out of the forest came an arrow, a single arrow. It landed in the ground just 3 feet in front of me and about 5 feet in front of this strange elf. The strange elf looked at the arrow sticking out of the ground, looked up, closed his eyes, then fear overcame his face. "RUUUUUN" he screamed in orcish.

Just then arrows started raining down from the sky. They were landing everywhere, some making their way into orcs and others hitting just ground. I closed my eyes as the arrows kept coming. The thought of getting struck was the only thing racing threw my mind. After I heard them stop a smile came across my face. I opened my eyes and looked over at Altalis to make sure he was ok. As I looked over I saw him kneeling down, looking straight up. As he fell to the ground I saw that 3 arrows had made their mark, right in his skull.

My body tensed, I was about to cry when a group of elves appeared. They checked the bodies of the dead. One of them came up to me and untied me. He had white hair and dark green eyes. He stood me up and wrapped my neck in cloth to stop the bleeding. I looked at Altalis, then at the elf who untied me. I asked him "Who are you? Why have you come?", and in orcish he replied "Don't ask questions that have answers you are not prepared for.". He looked up and walked away.

The group of elves walked into the forest, slowly disappearing from sight. I wanted to cry, there was nothing else I could do. I had to mourn for those which died, but crying was not the answer. I walked around town, looking for somebody, anybody. I looked everywhere, finding only fallen elves with arrows littering their bodies. As I found the dead bodies I looked at their necks to see the terrible marks that mad elf left, they were numbers.

As I examined the bodies I noticed that they all had already slain by the orcs before the other elves came. I started remembering the numbers, keeping in mind the highest number I've seen. I was at number 136 when I noticed I couldn't find any number higher. I wondered what these numbers meant. I returned to Altalis' body and pay him my respect before leaving.

I started to walk away and something gleaming caught my eye. It was a blade, laying in the ground. I went over to pick it up, it was one of Altalis' rapiers. I picked it up and searched for the second, I noticed the handle, it was over by Altalis' body. I bent over to grab it and as I did I noticed the mark on the back of Altalis' neck... 137. I froze. Quickly I rushed to the nearest house. I searched the house for a mirror, I found one. I smashed the mirror and held a broke part to the back of my neck. As I looked in the mirror I read the number... "138". I now knew what these numbers meant. Altalis was the 137th elf to die in this town, I was to be number 138. I was to be the last to die but now I am the only to live.

I took the rapiers, what little gold I managed to find, some food and water, and left that city. I left with no intention of ever returning. I learned a great lesson that day, trust nobody. Even though those elves saved my life, they had to take the one that was closest to me. The memory of that day still pains me, I lost everything I had that day, but in return I was offered the greatest advantage any warrior could ever have, nothing to lose.

As the door to the tavern opens, an elven gentelman walks inside. He stands tall, 6 1/2 feet tall that is, with what looks like sticks for limbs. He crouches down, obviously used to the action, legs slightly bowed as he walks. He is shirtless with a studded leather vest for his chest, and pants of similar material. He wears boots, well polished and well maintained, black leather to contrast with the brown of his clothing. A wide-brimmed hat tops his shaven head. A dozen knives adorn his body, 6 along his belt, 1 in each bracer on his wrist, 1 in each boot and 2 more in sheathes along the legs. He carries a satchel across his chest.

Scanning the room, he finds the woman he seeks.

Ms. Landor, I assume? My name's Jarvis. Jarvis Seacutter. Pleasure to make your acquaitence.

I hear you're looking for some help exploring some ruins. Well if treasure seeking is what you're up for, I think I can help you out there.

Credentials? Well, you see this left hand here? I still got it, those are my credentials. You see, my pop, he took me spelunking with him. Worked for a bunch of 'naval bound acquisitionists', if you catch my drift. Well, his saying was a treasure hunter is only as good as the number of limbs he still has left. And considering I've got both mine still, I'm in good shape.

How can a big guy like me be all stealthly like? Well that's just part of the job. If you'll notice, I may be tall, but I ain't got all that useless meat some do. I can get myself into some pretty cramped places. You'd be surprised at who I've snuck up on.

What am I in it for? Well the fun of course. Sure all that treasure's nice and all, but it's the thrill of finding it. That's what lifes about.

As Jarvis prepares to leave

How's my pop now? Well, you see, he doesn't have all his limbs. Them's the breaks though. At least he had a nice nestegg for his retirement and a load of stories. Now I'm gonna see how my luck goes.

Interview:
A particularly tall, slender elf covered in tattoos walks into the tavern. He wears simple hide armor and the hilt of curved sword is visible over his shoulder. A stoic look fails to cover his obvious discomfort as he observes the clientele. He quickly notes Landor sitting at her table with several other applicants. He walks up to the table and stands quietly near the table until she acknowledges him. "You are Landor? I am Kalis Daen'ith of the Ekujae. I have heard that you seek a scout to enter into the jungle. I am a hunter among the People and could lead you through the jungle. I know many of the dark places in the Mwangi and many of the dangers that it holds."

When Landor asks him to sit and asks questions about his history, Kalis seems uncomfortable, both in the chair and with the questions. "My tribe's shaman sent me away to find an answer to the problem of outsiders coming to make the People slaves. He told me that the Spirits had spoken to him and told him I could find the answer. I think he had another reason, that he sent me away because of my shame." Kalis' expression does not change, but he looks away from Landor. A spirit has cursed me. Among the People warriors are respected, but those who feel joy in battle and are drunk with it are to be pitied and feared. I am such a warrior. I think the shaman sent me away before my curse could spread." He stands and looks down at Landor, "I would dishonor myself if I did not tell you of my weakness. If you find the weakness too great to risk, I will understand."

I have been following the Legacy of Fire game you play in with DM Dan E and just wanted to let you know I enjoy that game. I think that I would fit in with a similar style game and I am a regular poster in a couple of other games.

Is Magus an acceptable class? I'd like to try a monk magus character I've been playing in my head a bit. Or a sorcerer wizard, perhaps.

Application List as it stands (apologies if I have anything incorrect or misrepresented):
Lord oKOyA (guaranteed spot) - Druid - Naturalist
Wareagle / Norlannan Tigersoul the Ranger - Elf Ranger - Scout
Doctor Iiwo - Mwangi Alchemist - Naturalist (or Healer?)
Mark Sweetman - Half-Orc Inquisitor - Bodyguard / Healer
Fredrik - ?
Marik Whiterose - Chelaxian Wizard (Diviner) - Arcane Investigator
Jarvis Seacutter - Elven Rogue - Ruins Delver
Kalis Daen'ith - Elven Barbarian - Scout
mittean - Magus?

Interview for Gethric:
The half-orc who just entered the tavern looks as though he has been hewn from rough stone. Relatively short, though solidly built it is wearing a brown hooded robe that has had the sleeves removed. The bulk of the robe betrays the presence of a black iron breastplate beneath it and worn over the creature’s shoulder is a heavy iron chain that has wicked spikes protruding from the links along half it’s length and is covered in a light patina of rust.

His exposed arms are wrinkled and creased with scars overlying the muscles. It is as though a chain had been wound around the length of his arm and then constricted with inhuman force. The hood of his cloak is raised against judgmental eyes, though you can clearly see his bestial jaw with tusks protruding from his mouth. His face is relatively non-descript and his scalp decorated with a shock of unkempt black hair.

As Gethric approaches the table where Larissia is seated, he has to push past a particularly drunk Ulfen at the bar….which has the result of spilling the Ulfen’s ale. ”Son of a Southlander, you’ll pay for that” the Ulfen reaches out and grabs Gethric by the shoulder – spinning him around. The motion of turning makes the hood of his cloak fall back from his head, showing his half-orcen heritage to all. Chuckling the Ulfen goads ”We’ll if it isn’t the king of bastard offspring, you owe me a drink pig”

Although giving away the best part of a foot in height and at least 50 pounds to the Ulfen, Gethric is not cowed. He steps forward to within inches of the northlander staring straight into his eyes while growling gutterally. The bluster of the Ulfen gradually fades as he looks into the face of the half-orc… seeing something within that façade disturbing enough to cause him to back away with hands held up in acquiescence. Gethric pays no further mind to the Ulfen and instead turns back to continue on towards Larissia’s table.

Speaking in a quiet and precise voice that belies his bestial appearance ”I was told that you are in need of muscle. I am recently of Gheradesca, but I am beholden to the Chain no longer. I have no ties to bind me to this land, and so can give my service to you entire.”

Continuing on, Gethric speaks in a level and measured voice. Larissia has the sense that he is not boasting in any of his statements, merely stating facts ”My feet lie steadfast upon the ground and will not give way while my heart pumps blood. My arms are scarred but strong, and when roused to anger can wield terrible ruin. I am sheathed in a skin of steel, but will not falter even when that is breached. I have known pain but have no fear of enduring it.” Larissia gauges there is a hidden depth to Gethric's statement about knowing of pain, but he does not elucidate the details.

”I can seek answers from those that are unwilling to speak and gauge if their tongues are faithful. I have delved elbow deep into the guts and blood of the broken and made them whole again. If I call out to my lord divine for aid, he will answer my call. My eyes have borne witness to beasts of both this world and the ones that lie beyond. Through this they have learned to ken both the strength of their flesh and how best to slay them.”

If you take down my mark then my life will be your plaything until I am no longer in your employ. Dotting for definite interest. I'm not certain yet if I'm going for the healer or arcane investigator role yet.

Tossing my hat as well, I propose a human samurai I made specifically for this AP. Details are in the profile page.

Dotting for interest. Will be back with a character and interview soon, I hope.

Interview for Blythe

Spoiler:
The names Blythe. I'm only seventeen, but I'm here for the protecting of your person. I'm straight forward...remove the Linnorm's head. Can't bite you without a head. I am from Jalmaray, but when I was ten I left on board the Sticky Pitch for Tamran, where my Uncle had moved. The ship was taken just after we left our stopover in Corentyn. They were the long ships of White Estrid of Halgrim. I killed three men, including the Captain of the long ship boarding us, and she spared me, and raised me. Trained me to fight like a Linnorm. No mercy. No compromise. No regret. I've traveled the length and breadth of the Inner Sea to get here. To protect you.

Concept for Blythe

Spoiler:
Blythe is a female human master of many styles monk. She will take levels of Magus. She is assertive about solving problems, and believes in action in this moment, but doesn't have a lot of the answers of how, what and why in life. She believes she knows who she is, but doesn't realize how much her life will change as she gets older. She can face any opponent, except perhaps inevitability.

I have a basic plan for her levels and combat style. If you would like to know more, let me know. you can e-mail me at mittean@hotmail.com.

Dotting for interest. I'll probably be submitting an elven bard for the arcane investigator job once I read up on the serpent's skull player's guide.

Mark:

I am open to either of those concepts Mark. This AP lends itself to a more mercenary type so I am not worried about having good characters, but someone who is loyal to the group is kind of a must so they are not disruptive. If money is the driver then so be it or even some other more nefarious reason! Good luck with the submission. You have been recommended BTW by some strong folks....

Raal Saikhan wrote:

Probably no going to accept any Samurai, Ninja, or Anit-paladin characters for this one.

Feel free to post another submission though!

A magus character would be fine.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32

I'd like to submit a free-hand fighter for the bodyguard role. Here is my interview:

Spoiler:

Good evening to you, Ms. Landor. My name is Kampo Pelven, and I'd like to apply for this expedition of yours as your bodyguard. I have spent half a dozen years protecting the merchant vessels of Magnimar, so I do know the drill pretty well. Now, before you ask - yes, this is really a hook I have here instead of my left hand. I've lost the real thing years ago, on a trade run which was destined to be my last. When pirates attacked us, two scumbags for each one of the crew members, I've first lost my shield and then my hand, but not my honor - we've managed to repel the scumbags, and the cargo and the captain survived. As a reward for my service, he'd paid a gnome chirurgeon to graft this thing here onto me. It is magical, and can move a little when I want to clench onto something with it. I can't even imagine how much it had cost him, but obviously less than he was paid for that cargo.

I thought I'd eventually come to terms with having to settle onshore and get a peaceful job, but it never happened. You know, these docks can never be peaceful, and I've learned to defend myself and others just fine, as many of the local thugs would attest, if they'd still be alive after facing me. I am giving you my word, madam - I am now better suited for this job than I've ever been, and as the local captains know, I've always been pretty darn good at it.

To those who had submitted an interview so far, thanks for the submissions.

You find Larissia to be pleasant and capable if not a little young herself. She doesn't give much away yet about the location the group is going to but you do know that the ship ends its voyage in Eleder
So it might be to the Mwangi Expanse or perhaps somewhere along the way.

She reiterates that the place they are going is dangerous but her warnings do not phase most of you.

BTW as a GM I plan to try and make skills a bigger part of this game as much as possible, so skill points will not be wasted in this AP!

Magagmumi's Interview:

Magamumi very politely waits her turn in the interview room, though she can't help chatting quietly to the other candidates. Periodically she giggles, as either she or her chosen interlocutor makes some form of joke -- and it's a big laugh, one might distinctly say belly laugh, for though she is not very tall, there is quite a bit of Magamumi in the width department. However, she realizes it's impolite to laugh so, when such serious business is being discussed, for she covers her mouth with her hand whilst doing so, and afterwards, if she catches her eye across the room, mouths to Larissia Landor that she's sorry, and looks contrite. However, she's clearly irrepressible, for it's rarely a few minutes that have passed before another chortle takes place. When it's her turn to be interviewed, she heaves herself to her feet, and waddles across the room, beaming broadly.

Hello, poppet. No, don't look so shocked -- I can well see what you're thinking -- "what's this fat old woman doing here?" And the belly wobbles yet again, as another deep cackle wells up from the depths. "Well, don't let my age cause you any concern, I've had 8 children, six of them boys, and they've all survived. Most of them strong as oxen. They used to have competitions to lift me! The little one put his back out the first time he tried -- I should have stopped him, really. Fortunately, I knew a special cure for that, and he was back upright within the week, I'm pleased to say. Until he fell out the top window of the barn when his brother pushed him." Another bubbling laugh breaks the surface.

"But hark at me, babbling on, you'll not want to hear about Golawi's trouble, and certainly not his broken arm. You'll want to know what I can bring to your little project here? Well, whatever I may lack in youth, I more than make up with experience, in my humble little opinion. Now lots of people call me a witch, specially my children, ha-ha-ha, but that's because they liked scaring their friends. It is true, however, I have certain skills that can seem -- unusual, to those that are not familiar with the ways of the world. But I reckon I can do the sort of things that may well come in very useful in this sort of expedition. And my life's a long way from over, let us hope! And now all the children have grown up and left home, and my bastard husband's gone and drowned himself in some stupid boating accident -- I blame the drink, of course, was always taking his silly little flask with him on that bloody boat, and I warned him, I warned him so many times -- daft old bugger."

Emotions are clearly never far beneath the surface with Magamumi, for now it's a sob that wells up, and in a second a handkerchief is out, and dabbing at her eyes. "Oh, goodness, this isn't making much of an impression, is it? Aren't I a silly old sod. I'm so sorry. I hope my make-up hasn't run too much, has it? It's just that Old Pappy may have been daft, but I have to say, he was the love of my life. I looked after him so much, and all the kids. But, he's been gone for over a year now, and I need to move on with my life. And Lilitha -- she's my youngest daughter -- said I should get out more, and here I am. What else would you like to know?"

Magamumi has a quick look at the heavens, as though seeking inspiration. She throws her hands up. "Oh my, aren't I a ninny. I've not even told you what I can do for you." The lady takes a deep breath, and begins a catalogue of abilities. "I can do a certain amount of magic, and I know a fair few secrets of alchemy as well, but my primary skills are as a healer -- as you might imagine with so many children, and, of course, all the others in the village sending their sicklies to me, old and young alike. That's where I think I might be of most use to use. I'm also a practising midwife, though I guess it's not very likely you'll be doing that on your adventures..." Magamumi makes a point of staring down at Larissia's belly... no seems not. And chortles yet again, magnificently. "Only teasing, my apple. Oh! I can also tell you the names of most flowers and herbs, and their uses, of course, and the nature and habits of many of the animals roundabout here, and indeed creatures that ain't really from around here at all. And did I mention the magic? Yes, I guess I did. Not much for hitting things on the whole, unless it's a clip round the ear. Haha! But I'm hoping there will be others in the group that can do that sort of thing. Having said that, I'm tougher than I look, and I hope you'll do me the grace of considering me. I'll make sure I serve you well. Spent me whole life looking after others, so don't see no reason to stop now, and I'll be having an adventure at the same time. That'll be something to tell the grandkids! Now, was there anything else?"

DM Stephan:
Excellent good - as per my previous post, I've settled on the Inquisitor of Zon-Kuthon - with (if approved) the Torture inquisition and a trait from Faiths of Corruption - Battlefield Surgeon (which lets you use Heal to cure Deadly wounds 2 x per day instead of 1).

Heh - the recommendations are appreciated, but as I'm sure you will anyway - please evaluate my submission on the same level as the others. BTW - I was once Krathok in the Crimson Kings, so you've first hand experience with my twisted and nefarious ways as well ;)

I know you said the interview is the main deciding factor - but I'll also have a background up closer to when the submission window finishes. I like to work on them over time and mull things over to make sure it makes sense.

Also in the interest of full disclosure - I will be going on vacation from December 14th to January 10th. I'll be in places where I can get online, but nowhere near as often as when I'm at home - so my posting will likely slip to once every 2-3 days during that period.

Dotting for interest with a Cleric of Gozreh. I have errands to run this morning, but hopefully I'll have time to write up an interview this afternoon.

Shadow Lodge

Submitting an Elven Witch for consideration.

Interview:

A slender elven male sits himself at the table, his expression intent and his pale blue eyes unblinking as he stares at Ms. Landor.

"I heard you were hiring for an expedition to uncover Azlanti ruins. I am interested in this, history and magic are my first and second loves and I could be an invaluable addition to your expedition. My skills? I am a witch of the...yes, witch...yes I am a male witch. I'll wait for the laughing to stop."

"Now, I where was I? I am a witch, trained in the healing arts by my mother, who learned from her mother before her. Although I am young I am well versed in magical lore, history, and the natural world. I heal the wounded and buy new life for the sickly. Although I understand you are paying for this job I consider that to be secondary to my primary goal of learning more of the ancient Azlanti, and what healing arts they may have possesed."

"I am not as well versed in the combat arts, but I am capable of defending myself when necessary. Yes, I am a healer, but I am also a witch. Sometimes in nature the old must die to make way for the new. And sometimes the old must be studied to insure the life of the new."

Tarith is a ranger with the Guide and Skirmisher archetypes from the APG. He'll be going the Weapon and Shield route, something I've never tried before, but looks interesting. I think he would fit best as a Bodyguard or Scout.

Tarith's Interview:
A short stocky dwarf, with sandy hair and an intricately braided beard sits across the table from Larissia Landor. "Tell ye about meself, eh? Well, where does a Dwarf such as meself e'en start?"

"Well, I grew up jest outside o' Janderhoff near the Mindspin Mountains. Me father was a miner and me mother stayed at home to raise me. I don' wanna go into details about me early life, so I'll jest say it was ordinary. Me father died when I was jest 42 and so I decided t' support me mother by taking a job as a guide. Believe it or not, but the Mindspin Mountains are more dangerous than ye might think. I had t' learn how t' defend meself and the folks I took on as a guide. Tha's why I learned t' use this here Dwarven-made waraxe." At this last statement Tarith pats the hilt of his weapon.

"Ye wouldn't believe the types o' people I had t' take care of up in the Mountains. There was this one guy who decided t' wipe his own arse with some poison ivy! I tell ye, he was scratchin' down thar like... OH!" Tarith claps his hand over his mouth dramatically. " I beg ye pardon miss. Anyway, where was I?"

"Me mother wasn't happy much with me taking care o' her. So she got herself a job in a tavern and told me to go follow me own dreams. Unfortunately, I didn' no what me dreams were! So I jest left in search o' some adventure. I met some real interestin' folks and one o' them pointed me to you and this expedition."

"Ye'll find that I have a good eye and a skill fer tracking, but I am also skilled in combat. I think I'll make a good bodyguard or scout fer ye, if'n ye'll have me, that is."

Edit: Stats are in his profile. Note that he is a modified character from a Kingmaker campaign that didn't really take off.

Grand Lodge

Added character traits to character sheet Norlannan is complete now :)

Dark Archive

Seeing as our GM has returned, I'm going to have to withdraw from consideration. Everyone else, enjoy the AP, it's an awesome adventure.

In case it's not obvious, I've uploaded some basic statistics to Magamumi's profile, but I'm not proposing to flesh out things like equipment and weapons until she's approved fully, and then she'll equip herself in character, as it were, after some conversations with Larrisia. Also, if the wizard's dropped out, then some of her skills may well prove useful, in addition to her healing powers, but of course, she can't know that. LOL.

I wouldn't worry about completely fleshing out characters until I have completed the character choosing process. Plus I want to give those folks a heads up on some home rules.

One of the big things is that Skill focus is going to be one of the best feats that Pathfinder has after I am done with them. Lets just say that skill focus is going to grant additional powers for that skill above and beyond the normal feat. Basically no one would other choose skill focus otherwise, it pretty much sucks but after I am done with it most people will at least look at it...there will be other changes as well.

BTW if you think you know about the start of the Shiv, I am completely changing it if you can't tell already.

Thanks, Stephen

Grand Lodge

What is the additional power for focus perception and Survival may change my first lvl feat depending on what it is.

Er, that made no sense to me at all, so I guess I'll not be minding that you've changed it! :-)

Since you say "approval only" would it be okay for me to work up a Magus submission for the Arcane Investigator role? I've been playing for long enough that I always get an itch to try out new classes at least once, just to see how they work out, and I think I've got the seed of a good idea for one.

Magus character submission is fine.

Interview:
The taverns main door opens, though at first it doesn't seem that anyone came in. After the door swings shut the small form of a halfling makes her presence known by stomping her boots clean at the entry and loudly clearing her throat. She scans the crowd briefly and then makes her way toward a table, tossing a serving girl a few silvers and calling for diner and an ale as she goes.

Arriving at Larissia's table, the halfling hoists herself up to one of the seats, swinging a dusty satchel onto the table, and breathing a long sigh of relief.

"Good to finally meet ya, Perrin wasn't it? No bother, I got the item in question, though it wasn't as easy as was made out. Don't you mind about that blood on the map, it's mine, and it doesn't obscure any of the important details." Pausing just long enough to dig out a map and lay it out infront of the bewildered Larissia, the halfling continues, "Now, extra trouble or not, I'm not here to rake you over the coals. What we agreed upon is fine..." She looks at Larissia, almost as if seeing her for the first time. "Wait half a second. You're not Perrin...You're a woman! Damn! All you bloody humans look alike..." Looking around at the tavern she asks, "What town is this? No bother, where were we? Scout? Azlanti ruins?" Grinning, she slouches back in her seat. "Well, you might be the man I came to see after all..."

It's my pleasure to submit Corbrius Jank, a human Magus, for the Arcane Investigator and/or Bodyguard roles. Questions or comments are more than welcome.

Stats:
Corbrius Jank
NG male human Magus (Bladebound) 1
Str 16, Dex 12, Con 12, Int 16, Wis 11, Cha 10
Traits: Focused Mind, Mwangi Scholar
Skills: Climb, Know (arcana), Know (history), Linguistics, Spellcraft, Swim, UMD
Languages: Common, Polyglot, Azlanti, Draconic, Infernal, Celestial
Feats: Weapon Focus (Scimitar), Combat Casting

Corb's Tale:
The young man sits nervously in his chair. He looks no older than 19, with olive skin and dark red hair. "My name? My name is Corbrius Jank. If you insist on hearing my story, you have to understand that it's really as much about her as me." He places his sword on the table and unsheathes it slightly. Though of ancient and ornate design the curved blade has obviously seen better days. Its etchings are faded, its metal a dull gray, and the red gem on the hilt has a crack running down its center. "This is Asilande. She's asleep right now. That's why I have to go to south, to wake her up again."

With a deep breath he begins to explain. "You see, even though my father was the younger brother he inherited the family business. Jank Trading, out of Absalom, you might have heard of it? That's because my uncle Gabber inherited the family responsibility of guarding Asilande. She's supposed to be an Azlanti blade of power, or something like that, but nothing special had happened in generations. Except uncle Gabber didn't just sit around being a guardian. He went traveling, and when they came back she was awake."

"She was different then. I was just a kid, but I'd never seen anything so beautiful." His hand gently rests on the blade. "Black as night with a gleaming red eye, sharp enough to cleave granite, and even if I couldn't hear her voice I could feel the life in her." He pauses as the memories overtake him. "Uncle Gabber said she had a mission for him. That it was why our family had protected her all these years, to help her when she needed to act. So he went south, to the jungles of Mwangi. Only he never came back, and she came back like this."

"I don't know what happened to uncle Gabber, but I think he has to be dead. Asilande wouldn't leave his side otherwise. I also don't think she finished what she needed to do. That's why I've trained in combat and spell work like uncle did, so I can finish what he couldn't." A frown overtakes him. "But she still hasn't woken up again. Maybe I need to be stronger, maybe I need to be somewhere she's needed. If I'm going to find either of those it's by going south, where she sent uncle Gabber."

He looks up with a mixture of pleading and determination. "I can read Azlanti runes and understand the arcane workings that still linger in their places. If you're going to be investigating ruins I can be of help with those. I've also trained enough with Asilande that I can hold my own in a fight, even with her in this state. So please, let me join you on your journey. I promise I'll be of use to you."

I present Kaylee for the position of Naturalist, half-elf cleric of Gozreh. (With the trait Child of Gozreh to get survival in class and the animal domain to give knowledge nature with skill focus in it, I think I'll have all relevant skills for the position covered.) Character sheet will be behind this alias.

Interview:

A female half-elf walks up to Larrissa's table. Brushing her green-streaked, blond hair from her face, she sits down with a friendly nod to Larrissa.
"Good day to you Miss Larrissa, my name is Kaylee Veridian and I hear that you are in need of a naturalist for you expedition and I'd like to apply for the job. Now I know that most people only bother bring along a cleric just for their healing skills, but my main passion is the discovery of natural sights never seen before. Nothing compares to knowing that you are the only living person to set foot in some wondrous grove or grotto for who knows how long."
Pausing for a moment, Kaylee takes a handwritten book out of her backpack and lays it upon the table, being very careful not to let it lay in any spills.
"This here is my other reason for wanting to go with you. I've been attempting to catalog as many species of animals as I can that are native to the Mwangi Expanse. I've been working on it for a couple of years now and I just know that I'll never be able to complete it unless I can get myself hired to a group planning on going in it."
"I promise that I can pull my own weight with your group and you won't regret choosing my to go with you Miss."

Here are her Skills and traits:

Traits:

Boarded in the Mwangi Expanse:
You boarded the Jenivere in the Mwangi Expanse, where you’ve lived or recently traveled through. You harbor no illusions regarding the deadliness of the jungles, the creatures that inhabit it, or the peoples that make their home therein. You gain Polyglot as a bonus language and receive a +1 trait bonus on all Knowledge (nature) checks regarding the jungle.

Child of Nature (Gozreh)
Benefit: You gain a +1 trait bonus on all Survival checks, and it becomes a class skill for you.

Shadow Lodge

DM Stephen:

Any other questions or thoughts for me? I just noticed I forgot to give my character name, which is Silus Ornspanga. An elven witch raised by his mother in a less traditional arcane manner than most elves. Strong interest in the natural world and the creatures therein. Patron would be Elements right now, with the idea that the elemental powers are the most powerful force in nature, outlasting even the elves. I've also considered Healing and Time from Ultimate Magic.

Doctor Iiwo wrote:

Edit: Hmm....

Spoiler:

I have only seen one alchemist in play, how do you see his role in this AP? Just curious to see how you think he will progress and make an impact on the group? Not opposed to this character, just more curious than anything. Thanks.

Just thought I would mention that there are no Orcs in this AP. Having them as favored enemy would probably be a waste. I woudn't have a problem with you re-working this character's background though. Thanks, Stephen.
BTW I probably won't talk to mcuh about the home rules until I finish the character selection.

Here's my update to Mark Sweetman's list... since I like to know my competition before I make my submission. ;)

Application List as it stands (apologies if I have anything incorrect or misrepresented):
Lord oKOyA (guaranteed spot but flexible) - leaning Druid - leaning Naturalist
Wareagle / Norlannan Tigersoul the Ranger - Elf Ranger - Scout
Doctor Iiwo - Mwangi Alchemist - Naturalist (or Healer?)
Mark Sweetman - Half-Orc Inquisitor - Bodyguard / Healer
Fredrik - ?
Marik Whiterose (withdrew) - Chelaxian Wizard (Diviner) - Arcane Investigator
Jarvis Seacutter - Elven Rogue - Ruins Delver
Kalis Daen'ith - Elven Barbarian (Invulnerable Rager) - Scout
mittean - Human Monk (Master Of Many Styles) / Magus - Bodyguard
markofbane - ? - Healer? or Arcane Investigator?
Raal Saikhan - Human Samurai (Standard Bearer) - Bodyguard
Scaragoth / Magamumi - Witch - Healer / Naturalist
loimprevisto - Elven Bard - Arcane Investigator
flykiller - Fighter (Free Hand Fighter) - Bodyguard
Kaylee Veridian - Half-Elf Cleric (Gozreh) - Naturalist
Balodek - Elven Witch - Healer / Arcane Investigator
Tarith Ordin - Dwarven Ranger (Guide / Skirmisher) - Bodyguard / Scout
Groth - Human Magus (Bladebound) - Arcane Investigator / Bodyguard
Ridley Blix - Halfling Bard (Archaeologist) - Ruins Delver

Well, isn't that interesting. I was almost settled on a character, and now I'm going to have to rethink it (or maybe submit two).

Some questions that might help me decide:

Is the UM ranger archetype Trapper okay? I have a halfling who could fill the ruins delver and scout roles, if so.

Also, what do you think about multiclassing? It's not uncommon for me to start a character out with a level of some full-BAB class for the hitpoints and damage dice. Is that cheesy? practical? endpoint suboptimal? or does it all depend on the RP?
