As the effort and expertise required to navigate the little boat a relatively short distance by comparison becomes apparent, Nim remarks, It would seem unlikely that more than 6 persons could have escaped the Jenivere aboard this little sliver of wood. If it was just the two of them, then the Captain, or whoever was guiding the boat, is an excellent sailor indeed. And with a strong back as well, to have made it this far around the island in one piece.

Will update map and new route later tonight...

Assuming that Ishirou was well enough for Mihai to leave?

Mihai does not enjoy the short dalliance back upon the waves in such a small vessel; and is glad when they reach the wreck to tie off - though gladder still when they get back onto solid land.

If Ishirou is gauged to be ok for a few days, then Mihai will come - if not, then Mihai may stay at camp.

Earlier at camp, I will certainly take the aid....just in case. I have actually found a few local remedies to help. Ishirou's condition will take a few days to fully recover but I am sure I will be fine while you venture out for a day or two, they need you more than I do at the moment Mihai.

Anton:

Go ahead and make me a DC 16 Fort save. If you make it give me one more.

Assumes you follow the same course Nim set out for you that you never finished.

You set out for the day heading south again. You make quick work of this terrain as you now know it well. You are heading back north when you run into an interesting patch of thick and sharp looking nettles growing along the river bank. Within the nettles you see a large number of bright red berries.

You can recognize them as a useful type of berry called the Volun Berry.
These berries, apart from being delicious, have an unusual side effect—they help with recovery from sickness and even addiction, particularly the sickness caused by alcohol withdrawal. They are also very useful in fighting off and preventing diseases. It looks like it mght be alittle dangerous to harvest them though as the nettles are big and very sharp.

DC 20 Knowledge Nature:

They are a type of dangerous nettles known as Viper nettles. Getting scratched by them can cause the creature scratched to bcome very sick.

Back at their new home, Anton watches for a chance to talk privately with Aerys. While he waits, he decides to try his hand at whittling the club that he described earlier to Nim, since it was his artistic vision after all; and there's no pressure, since he's happy with Nora's dagger and doesn't even want his own back from Gelik anymore. Amazingly, Anton actually manages to wrangle the hefty chunk of wood into something as attractive as it is practical.

"Hey Gelik, check it out!" Anton holds up a small (but solid) club with a bas relief carving of a cobra twining its way around the haft, with its hooded maw peering over the top. "I made this for you. Now if anything needs its head bashed in, you can do it in style, with one of the scariest things in this jungle on your side. Keep the dagger too; bash, cut, or poke, whatever works best, you've got it all covered now!" The budding sculptor grins from ear-to-ear with elation at his second success.

Aerys:
This takes place after Anton starts carving the club for Gelik, but before he finishes.

Tucking a partially-carved club under one arm, Anton jogs to catch up with Aerys as she heads out of the camp on some errand. He marvels yet again at how his new ancient boots find just the right place to step in the dense jungle, making him as fast as an unladen human. "Aerys! I have a surprise for you."

The bold halfling grins shyly. "I didn't want to say anything in front of everyone, since your business isn't theirs -- but look, I got some Volun berries! They could help with, you know, if that's still a problem. Take however much you want." He holds out a sack of about 20 handfuls.

Corbius shaken by what he has experienced rises slowly from the ground his hand gripping his rapier tightly ready to strike at any threat. Slowly turning he surveys the ruins to make sure there is no more of the creatures as if concerned this was some kind of trick.

Seeing no immediate threat Corbius looks around the camp to see if anyone else noticed the beast if he sees anyone in the party who might have noticed he subtly gestures for them to be silent and nonchalantly collects Nim and Tragershen pulling them off to one side.

Did either of you see the creature? He asks cautioulsy optimistic they will not think him mad. He continues as calmly as possible so not as to alert anyone else. Over there on the corner of the ruin. A Chupacabra was there. One far larger and more powerful then any I have ever heard of. It said that it has been watching us and that it is sending a test for us.

[b]There is some other group on the island and they are coming to attack us. Apparently they plan to attack when we leave to explore today. I..I..beleive it was telling the truth though I also feel it may have sent these others after us.

Regardless of the others coming to attack us the Chupacabra said that if we survive it expects some sort tribute. The creature flew off before i could find out what it meant by tribute.

It also said that if we do not give it the tribute it expects that it will kill us all one by one. I got the very clear impression that it meant what it said. Corbius glances over his shoulder as if expecting the beast to fly in and attack at any moment.

Shocked as he is by what he just witnessed, Anton is still sharp enough to catch Cobrius's signal; and so he does his best to play asleep while paying attention to what is said. His natural gifts honed by years of vigilance in the war-torn forests on the border of Nirmathas and Molthune, Anton has no trouble making out the words. Take 10 on Perception for 21 -- good enough to hear a whispered conversation 60' away.

The DC 25 is to wake up and hear the conversation so with your check you were good and did get to read all of the spoilers.

Corbrius & Anton:

The way the creature phrased the statment about the others, you are not sure if it was sending the others or the others are coming for you and it just knows about them.
Either way it was insinuating that they plan to attack the camp after the group is split and you have left for the day.

Mihai:

Retcon the night before.
It occurs to you that one of the castaways might have been suffering from addiction withdrawals, Aerys. She has seemed to be suffering from some type of sickness since you have joined the group and Jask seemed to be tending to her but she never has really gotten better.
The Volun Berries really just put two and two together...you see Anton over there talking to Aerys and presenting some of them to her...You have heard of the berries being very effective in removing addiction, although it will probably use up most of you supply.
Maybe there is a way to make the berries more effective? You tink on it for some time Take a 20 and decide that making them into a drink, mixed with some local herbs might increase their effectiveness as well save some of the berries for the parties use!

Anton:

As Aerys looks on your offering, some tears come into her normally hard eyes...Do you really think they might work? It has been so hard dealing with this and trying to survive on the island.
Thank you Anton, you have been a friend to me and asked nothing in return. If there is anyway I can repay you...just ask. If this works I can finally be free again...it has been so long.

She gives you a big hug!

Well, I certainly do believe you. If a common monitor lizard could be a yard away from me without my knowing, I feel certain a chupacabra could come and go without my noticing; sadly, I lack much of the keen senses of most of my kind.

It would make sense that it may try to pit two groups against each other, especially if it considered one or both a threat. I think we should take a day off from exploration, spend a day here at the camp making it secure. I wanted to take a good look at that trap door anyway and see if I could get it operational again. I think perhaps we should let the rest know about this. Perhaps we could have Mihai bring it up with them; he seems a good natured fellow and they may take it well coming from him. If everyone is prepared for the second group we stand a much better chance against it.

DM, does Tragershen know anything about chupacabra’s that might shed light on the situation? Are they known to be clever, or deceptive, or cowardly? Could a large one be a threat to our group on its own? Do they often work alone? Could this other group it mentioned be charmed, or illusionary? Knowledge Arcana 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16

Following the conversation, Tragershen will examine the trap door and its mechanism. Does he think it is something he can repair, or jury rig to work? If he needs help with moving a heavy part, he’ll enlist the aid of the others. If there is something that requires small hands or a nimble touch, he’ll single out Gelik to help him out. Engineering 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16

Tragershen:

You knnow what the DC 16 check above tells you. The common specimens are usually small sized, physically powerful but other than a little stealthy don't have any magical abilities that you have heard of. As far as you know though most are little more than smart animals (magical beasts) so this one must be special...of course even if this isn't a common specimen you have a hard time believing that they would manifest such powers just by getting larger...
Maybe some of the others would have more insight.
The engineering check is not enough to repair the trap door.
That assumes that you had one or more of the other's try strength checks until to made the DC.

MAP

How many hexes can we explore per day now that Anton moves faster? I know we will not likely be heading out right away with the threat upon the camp, but I will hope to set up a few routes in advance as I am heading to Arizona for a week of R&R... and won't likely be able to update the map next week.

For simplicities sake say 2 unexplored hexes (1 extra per 4 hours) or 4 explored (1 extra per 2 hours). You can mix and match.

Anton rolls over and pops up from where he'd just been laying there the whole time, then nods at Tragershen. "You all finish explaining to Mihai and Aedalis, I'll get the other castaways." The confusing halfling leaves his breastplate by his sleeping pad and trots over to start waking up his other friends from the Jenivere.

"I have good new and bad news. The bad news is that you're going to be attacked by locals in the morning, as soon as we leave. The good news is that we know it in advance -- you really don't want to know how -- so we can prepare."

"First, I know that it will take some modification, but *someone* should take Nora's chainmail. Jask? Trust me, I knew her well, and she would just want for you all to be happy and safe -- as do I." Anton gives the fugitive priest a friendly halfling fist bump.

"Same goes for Nora's third dagger. Aerys? I know that you trust in your fists, but you never know when you'll need to poke or cut something. Just take it." The sadly experienced ranger winks at her over his lopsided grin, then rests a hand on Gelik's shoulder.

"I'm sorry that we haven't found or made any armor for you yet. I'll make that a priority now that I know it's a problem; for tomorrow, just try and stay behind other people if you can, or you can wait it out in the Azlanti laboratory if you prefer." Anton squeezes the shoulder of the out-of-his-element gnome, then lets go and looks around at the rest.

"So, we're still figuring things out, but the most likely thing is that we'll pretend to leave and then circle around. In the meantime, if any of you know engineering and can fix the mechanism for the magic lab's trap door, it would add to our tactical options; talk to Tragershen to see what he's tried already."

Anton smiles at his other friends (as how he thinks of them). "Any questions? Except about how we know." He winks, but only half-joking.

Male Human (Varisian) Cleric (Varisian Pilgrim archetype) 6

As Mihai ponders on Tragershen's words - he looks to see that Anton has already broken the news to them and his discretion is somewhat less required. He smiles wryly at Tragershen before moving to where Anton has gathered the others. Since Anton has already told everyone what Tragershen wanted Mihai to break, he'll await their reactions and smooth over anything needing smoothing.

Mihai keeps his gaze near Aerys, and when she looks at him Mihai smiles and pantomines that he would have words with her a little later.

As to the tactics "There is another way that we may safeguard those less able and meet the incoming party on our terms. Rather than setting off ourselves... we could send them in our stead. They need not travel far - just far enough to be safe and then we can await the coming of the others here... on ground that is known and defensible?"

Jask pipes up, We trust however you came by this information if you do Anton?
If these "locals" are going to attack us after you leave, wouldn't changing things possibly alert them? I assume they will look to make sure you have left before attacking.
Maybe we should try to talk to them and find out why they want to attack us?

Why don't we hide in the hatch at the first sign of trouble and then you can leap out of the woods and kill them, that way we will be out of the way and you can focus on the "locals"?

Aerys and Sasha both give the little coward a look of disgust...

Ishirou is still sick and lays there groaning, he will not be of any help for the upcoming fight.

Male Halfling (Molthuni) Barbarian 1 Ranger (Trapper) 3

Anton listens carefully. "Jask, do you hear the contradiction in your words? I agree that we don't want to alert them by changing things -- because it sounds like *they* don't want to talk to *us*."

"And Gelik, it looks like Ishirou is in no shape for something like this right now. How about we put him in the Azlanti lab, you guard him with the weapons that I gave you, and we'll tell you when it's safe to bring him out?" Anton attempts to find the most tactful way to get the timid gnome out of the way, and Ishirou (sadly) provides the perfect excuse.

An excellent idea Anton! I will protect Ishirou.

Gelik has a hard time looking anyone else in the eyes as he says this...

Waiting to post but as Tragershen was told to tell Mihai and Aedalis i've been waiting for a post from him. I'm aware he has family troubles and can't post though so shall I just assume hes spoken to us, DM?

I think you can assume the whole camp has been told now that everyone is talking about it and the NPC's are weighing in.
Hopefully we can pick this back up full force on Monday.

Aedalis litens gravely as the event of the previous night is shared with him. His first thoughts are curious rather than concerned.

A Chupacabra hmm...?

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21

Beat the previous spoiler on them by 5, does Aedalis have any additional information?
