Fredrik:
Just to be clear, I am not trying to start a fight! :)

If the inclusion of all the smilies does not indicate my intended tone, please accept my apologies if you find this at all confrontational.

Like I said, I am fine with playing it "raw"... it really is to my advantage for the most part... it is just annoying. :)

<Comment redacted> :)

Don't feel bad, I like Swiss cheese. ;)

Lord oKOyA:
Thank you for you-know-what. ;) And no apology necessary; I was just trying to explain why I answered the way that I did. :)

You (know who you are):

I'm not sure about the other two... but for Kip might I suggest an unfortunate happenstance involving identical twin nymphs, a unicorn, a large pool of creamed corn and the nymphs' jealous barbarian satyr lover?

Heh? Heh? What do you think? :D

So for everyone who made their Will saves and didn't click those spoilers, what emerged is this: What if you could use an immediate action to perform a free action? It looks to me like it would be a low-risk experiment, since it would be 1/turn max, using the same action currency as swift and immediate actions. It also has the advantage of not involving any fiddly little adjustments to particular things.

****** Random musings ******

Tragershen's post has me thinking. Seeing as how the vege has cover from him (and vice versa), which grants him a +4 to his AC, does that make using Aid Another more difficult? I'm not sure that I have ever encountered this, or if I have I forget. It can really go either way imo. The +4 is to his AC not a penalty to Trag's roll. The static AC of 10 for Aid Another seems like it would not benefit, but other hindrances (read penalties) to Trag's to hit roll would make him less likely to hit the AC 10. Likewise, cover removes the possibilty of AoO, which means that the cover should also hinder the Aid Another action.

I know it doesn't matter here in this instance, but it made me stop and think. What do you think? (Not trying to start another lengthy rules discussion, really I am not. Just curious. :)

******************************************************************

Reading the rules regarding cover etc reminded me about these little gems about reach weapons.

"To determine whether your target has cover from your
ranged attack, choose a corner of your square. If any line
from this corner to any corner of the target’s square passes
through a square or border that blocks line of effect or
provides cover, or through a square occupied by a creature,
the target has cover (+4 to AC)."

and

"When making a melee attack against a target
that isn’t adjacent to you (such as with a reach weapon), use
the rules for determining cover from ranged attacks."

This means when you use a reach weapon from the second rank, your opponent has cover and you cannot execute AoO against them.

Something for Anton and enlarged Nim to keep in mind. :(

********************************************************************

As for Wic and Nim's "improved" stat lines, I am thinking Nim's triple spoiler is a bit much... I think the single spoiler is much better. The question is, is it better without the spoiler?

I have also noticed that when you "preview" a post, this line disappears entirely until you "submit" the post, spoilered or not. This makes it much less useful for checking stats on the fly of course.

Perhaps it isn't intentional. I should make a bug report I guess.

EDIT: Website Feedback posted.

I keep on learning more about the cover rules. The part about no AoOs seems new to me.

I think that whether Aid Another is affected by cover depends on the target of the melee attack roll. How abstract is it? Are you rolling to see whether you can be distracting in general? Or would a ranger get a bonus against a favored enemy? If the opponent doesn't matter, then cover doesn't matter; if the opponent is the target, then having cover would give it +4 to AC.

Although it's currently on hold (due to the DM getting a promotion to homicide detective), my brief sojourn in Kingmaker of Korvosa encouraged me to develop more of a narrative style (like writing a story), compared to my previous cinematic style (just declaring words and actions). Hope you like it.

Sorry for holding things up...

Quick question/poll. Target has been knocked unconscious by a color spray. Enemy uses coup de gras against target. Target survives damage dealt and its fort save vs death. Does the target become conscious after the failed coup de gras?

I would say no... the spell induced unconsciousness cannot be circumvented by hard slapping etc... so no amount of damage will make the target conscious.

Just checking before I kill one of my player's characters in my home game. :/

Best I can tell, they'd remain unconscious. If you want to be nice, they could assume he's dead after their mortal blow, unless they make some kind of Perception or Heal check to notice that the tough bugger is holding on.

I say spare his life :) :) I might be biased though.

Fredrik wrote:

Yeah, this just happened in my Jade Regent game, albeit to a bad guy with my wizard's d4 worth of dagger. I would have been very unhappy to suddenly find her in melee with an awakened monster who should still have had several rounds of unconsciousness yet. In the all-important test of "Would the PCs be okay with it if it were the other way round?", I say it shouldn't wake them. Unconscious isn't sleeping, although sleeping is a form of unconsciousness, and there's no text about damage waking them.

Fredrik's suggestion is a good one to make the player feel like he got some benefit from making the Fort save, though.

Yeah he is dead...attacking and damaging a creature affected by color spray shouldn't wake it up IMO. That is why it is the deadliest 1st level spell out there.

If he survives, the scar from a coup de grace could be a real conversation piece. Like, how is one man unlucky enough to have his head chopped half-off, and then lucky enough to live?

Now time to catch up with the action here! :)

Your Humble Narrator

Have the enemy make a Heal check to determine the killing blow didn't simply slay the PC outright.

Edit: Missed that had already been suggested. But it is how I would run it. Depends on context, no allies of the PC threatening? Does the bad guy really want to provoke AOO's trying again?

Cheliax

No longer matters Drow Lich Epic level Wizard/Cleric of considerable ability

No threats... No one present at the moment except for unconscious PC and bad guy. Bad guy has a few rounds to do as he pleases... He likely won't stop until he is sure the PC is dead. :/

Your Humble Narrator

Unless you have a compelling reason the bad guy might want to capture the PC, carry on slitting his throat then :)

Cheliax

No longer matters Drow Lich Epic level Wizard/Cleric of considerable ability

Not interested in capturing him unfortunately ... the bad guy is really pissed at the PCs... and is exacting his revenge before he has to flee... unless he happens to find a healing potion on the PC's corpse. :P

I'm sure all the grisly details will be included when I post in the Kingmaker obituary thread.

And my comment about the knowledge check was aimed at DM. :) lol

I'd be even nicer and assume at least move actions required for the heal check. He's gone for what he thinks is a killing blow. Unless he has a particular reason to make absolutely certain I'd say he leaves the lucky PC satisfied.

Unless of course your playing order of the stick style with crosses in the eyes...

Urgh what the f&+$?!?!

I thought this disappearing dots and new posts b@#!*&%# was over now. Saw okoya's alias Kip telling me Aedalis is up and I look to see at least 5 new posts that never showed up on my campaigns tab. FFS...

Male Halfling (Molthuni) Barbarian 1 Ranger (Trapper) 3

Updated the party loot log. I've been ignoring coin weight because I find that kind of accounting tedious, but it's passed my capacity to suspend disbelief. Anton might be able to carry the pp and jewelry, but not almost 5500 other coins. I think it's time to retcon that Anton dumped the other gp and sp into the dented footlocker in the cannibal chieftan's den, instead of taking out what was there.

Male Human (Varisian) Cleric (Varisian Pilgrim archetype) 5

Aedalis - I've half given up on the post tracker. I just open every campaign I'm in once a day to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Loot wise - Mihai is obviously interested in the Headband of Wisdom.

Chain shirt and longspear should go to someone more likely to use them in anger.

Male Halfling (Molthuni) Barbarian 1 Ranger (Trapper) 3

Anton isn't really interested in any of the loot. Someday, when he's stronger and has a masterwork backpack, then he'll be looking for a chain shirt. No point until he's strong enough that he can ditch enough gear to get to a light load. One of those things that I'm assuming will have to wait until we get back to civilization (if we ever do).

I've got things sorted out with the gp, sp, and cp. I'm kind of treating it like they all magically transport directly to the footlocker, but that's just so I don't forget to add them later; they're presumably being held by people with carrying capacity to burn, until we get back to camp. I'm also counting coin weight now (more or less), which added 0.5 lbs. for Anton's own coins and 1 lb. for the party's pp and gems and stuff. (That might not sound like much, but it is for him.)

I'm assuming that Aerys's book weighs 1 lb. like a 50-page journal (PFS Field Guide) or traveling spellbook (AA). I also have a darkwood coffer that I keep forgetting about -- the one from the ship with the haunt and the locket -- and I haven't decided what to make it into yet, so for now I'm leaving it at camp. I think that covers everything...

Pretty much what I do. :P

Regarding loot:

Nim cannot wear the chain shirt... should go to Corb IMO.

Nim is not proficient with the longspear... so is really not interesting to him... not worth it at -4. Anton? Corb? Someone back at camp for the time being?

Nim is going to absolutely need a headband of wisdom in the future (9th level) ... but not necessarily now. No benefit really at all until 5th level (1 bonus 3rd level spell). Mihai can take it.

Bracers should go to someone already proficient in bows. So not Nim. :) Does anyone actually have a bow? :P

As for the wands... it would make sense for Nim or Anton to carry the CLW IMO... in case Mihai goes down... and the Mirror Image could go to Trag to free up his spell slot... or Corb to use to avoid AoO in melee. It can really be party loot and shared if time permits buffing.

Male Human (Varisian) Cleric (Varisian Pilgrim archetype) 5

Mihai has a shortbow... just no intention of using it at all :)

Cheliax

No longer matters Drow Lich Epic level Wizard/Cleric of considerable ability

But do you have arrows? ;)

Male Halfling (Molthuni) Barbarian 1 Ranger (Trapper) 3

Corb has a shortbow that he never uses. (He also has a couple of daggers that he never uses, even though Weapon Finesse would give them a better attack roll than the club.) I suspect that Aedalis might be willing to trade for his light crossbow, due to being able to load faster (and extend hexes while shooting), as long as we made it clear that the bracers of archery were like the ring of swimming, and just because you're using something in the wild doesn't mean that you've committed to it being part of your share of the treasure when we finally get back to civilization. Whew! Hope that long sentence made sense.

The longspear could've saved Corb an AoO. Instead of just three lucky rolls, he needed five for that to go as well as it did. With a reach weapon, it would've been enough to cast defensively, attack, and confirm crit; instead, he also had to make a concentration check and a fort save (and take 15 damage). Besides, Anton's happy with his lucerne hammer.

Even if we assume that the chain shirt might be Small, it's hard for me to see how to get Anton down to a light load at his current Strength (which is what it would take for it to be worth it). And Corb could use it anyway.

Anton can't use wands, due to the Trapper archetype. There are a lot of things that I might've done differently, including that one, but it has its compensations. We'll see how it works out! :)

Cheliax

No longer matters Drow Lich Epic level Wizard/Cleric of considerable ability

Maybe I am over-reacting a smidgen here but... I am going to respond as I know Corb's player won't...

...Nim ribbing Anton in character about choices and decisions is not the same as ripping Corb's player's game choices/decisions. I do not think we should open that can of worms... glass houses and all. :)

And in his defence, he did not design the PC he is playing, but rather inherited it from the original player. I know for a fact he would like to change many things about the character, but didn't want to come in and make a bunch of demands (being a new player to the boards). He has mentioned acquiring (or Nim crafting) a reach weapon previously (to me in PM), but it was suggested that Nim pick up the longspear here... and I went along with it without thinking about the fact Nim is not proficient with it. :P

As for his actions, while you may see mistake, I can see intent. His calculated risk to provoke an AoO (while possessing a not too shabby AC) was possibly designed to cause the fungus to expend its AoO allowing others (very likely Anton) the chance to reposition in relative safety themselves. If you follow the chain of actions, he really only need worry about the concentration check if the fungus possessed more than 1 AoO, seeing as how it would be used on his movement provocation. I myself would have forgone the casting defensively and hoped it didn't have another AoO to use when I cast, and if it did, hoped it missed or that I made my concentration check then to keep the spell.

I would further point out that if he had used the longspear, he would never have critted (needing a nat 20 with the spear as opposed to 18-20 for the rapier) and that was a massive difference in the damage done. Also, and I am not sure about this as I am relatively unfamiliar with the magus class, but I don't believe he can use a two-handed weapon and use spellstrike (I know it is a restriction of spell combat, so I believe it to 'carry over' to spellstrike).

In the end, mistakes are made by everyone*... and that is ok. Sometimes we are in a hurry, unfamiliar with a rule or just having a duh moment. Just like real life, not all our choices will be the best. We just hope things turn out in the end. :)

My apologies if this seems a little too harsh a response. I just want to keep things fun and friendly. :P

If Nim's IC comments are too much, and creating a negative environment, I'll dial back his low charisma. It is not really like me... just ask Alex and Stephen! ;)

*For example, when re-thinking things over here, I believe that the fiendish template adds SR to the creature. :) I am sure he would have made his caster level check anyhow. ;)

PS That is good to know about Anton (no spellcasting?) so I can go ahead and add the CLW wand to Nim? :)

You're right, I didn't know what I was talking about and shouldn't have said anything. I'm sorry. I don't have time to say more because what I actually came here to say is that I'm working 50+ hours this week and my posting will be limited.

Remember the bracers give you proficiency with any bow along with the bonus to hit...

Yes people let's keep things positive and please don't take discussion personally on either side!
I actually like the banter in character, but hopefully everyone understands it should stay or be directed there. Nothing else really needs to be said about it.

Anyways, I hope you are enjoying the storyline, we are into the final leg of the story of the Shiv.
It will be fast paced and it is crunch time for the group of adventurers...do you report back to the Dryad...do you take the Red Mountain Devil up on his offer? Do you go after Ieana? If so how do you find her?

Bummer about the workload Fredrik... hope the overtime pay makes up for it! :)

Corbius would be quite happy to get the chain shirt.

He would pass the Amulet of natural armour on to Nim in that case, to try and bolster his AC (Let me know Nim).

As far as the other equipment goes:

Bracers of Archery - I have a bow but as Anton pointed out I do not use it very often. Mostly due to lack of opportunity. Someone else would be better off with that item I am sure.

Long-spear +1 - Again as Nim pointed out, with the long-spear it cripples one of my primary abilities and would likely see limited use. I would take it but somebody else at the camp could likely make better use of it for now.

Headband - zero intrest. Nim or Mihai would benefit way more.

wand of CLW - zero intrest. Though I do agree with Nim that we may want someone other then Mihai having this item in case he gets dropped separated etc.

Wand of Mirror Image. - Would be very interested. As one of the few frontline fighters who seems to get dropped the most I could see some benefit in having it. That said if Trag really wants it I have no argument with that.

I am having a blast in this pbp and looking forward to the next leg!

Personally, I don't mind critiques or suggestions on character actions and such, especially here in the ooc thread as long as it doesn't get too metagamey. By all means, if I do that to one of you and think I happen to go to far in that regard, call me out on it. I won't take it personally. Like email, I know a lot of tone and intent can be lost in online posts, so when reading them just try to take them in the best possible light possible and I will try to do the same. :)

Regarding the equipment we found... I am willing to let Corbius to take the wand of mirror images. I am not seeking out frontline opportunities and when I get more spells to chose from at 4th level I may drop mirror image from memorized spells in favor of another spell. I can always use bonded object to cast it in a pinch. If you find you aren't able to use the wand as you hope due to the economy of actions we can consider trading off. As Fredrik reiterated, when we get back to civilization we can take another look at what we have collected and redistribute or sell as we see fit.

No interest in barcers or bow. Aedalis has enough potential actions in any given round already.

Note i'd be happy for him to hold the wand of CLW if people want. No preference myself.

So just to sort out the magic items before we move on... I have:

Chain shirt to Corb (who then passes the amulet of nat armor to Nim)

Headband to Mihai

Wand of CLW to Aedalis

Wand of Mirror Image to Corb

Spear to camp? (Ishiru?)

Bracers to Corb?

Similarly, Nim is a grumpy suspicious jerk most of the time... more so given his previous interaction with the dryad. Nim doesn't like the dryad to begin with. Anton's claims haven't improved things. :)
