Jeb's bolt sinks deep into the wolf's hide, and it jerks upright, crying in pain, its muzzle covered in gore. Before it can react further, though, Gareth has run it down with his longhammer and bashed in its brains.

Following the group across the street and to the shrine itself, you can quickly see that the body on the porch is indeed that of Noelan. He is long past the point of any saving.

The doors to the Shrine are currently closed, but you can clearly hear thumps, cracks, and grunting sounds within.

Iteb thought momentarily and shook her head, "If ya think so, but sounds like many and who knows if find others to save inside." Still, readying her weapon again beside the door in case they wanted to ambush the group inside. "I say continue on to Trading Company, fine either way." Her voice hushed.

Aubrin bends down over Noelan's body, then shakes her head with a very quiet sob. Hearing talk of a possible ambush, though, she quickly rises and offers a silent toast to you and the fallen cleric, sending a wash of healing energy through all those of you who still live for 2d6 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7 hit points back.

Lysander shakes his head sadly. Noelan was a friend, one of the few he made a point of stopping by and talking to whenever he was in Phaendar. They had spoken many times of theology, especially the similarities and differences between the Green Faith and Erastil's flocks.

So what's the plan, guys? Going in or going on?

Seeing the refusal on Gareth's face she sighs, "Can't save everyone." She states coldly, but still readies he weapon, "Opening door on three." He announced, waiting for a last second preparation anyone needed before opening the door and charging in to deal with whatever godforsaken fate they face on the other side. At least the wave of energy that seemed to heal her bruises from earlier should help her stay standing in this fight.

Bunko nods at Iteb's plan, ready to assess any threats that lay beyond the door.

Iteb throws open the doors of the Shrine. Wooden statues of both Erastil and Desna — both now chopped and marred by hobgoblin weapons — stand in their own alcoves in the northwest end of the shrine, while alcoves on either side serve as general shrines to the variety of other gods and spirits worshiped by the locals. A dozen human bodies lie scattered across the floor and pews, and have been left to rot as invaders go about tearing apart the building. There are two: an Ironfang recruit dressed and armed as the others you have seen so far have been, and a hobgoblin female in padded armor, carrying a pair of axes (one larger than the other). They appear to have been busy tearing down colorful banners, smashing offerings, and chopping at the statues and altars with their weapons, and indeed the lightly-armored hob is busy trying to wrest her weapon from the altar where the head is currently buried when Iteb opens the doors.

Gareth grinds his teeth when he sees the scene, but doesn't waste time and moves towards the recruit to attack him.

Attack (dwarven longhammer): 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (14) + 3 + 1 - 1 = 17
Damage: 2d6 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (6, 4) + 3 + 3 = 16

He then tries to cleave at the other hobgoblin. If he's adjacent to the first one and on his reach:

Attack (dwarven longhammer): 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (16) + 3 + 1 - 1 = 19
Damage: 2d6 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (5, 5) + 3 + 3 = 16

Gareth's longhammer slams into the Ironfang legionnaire with bone-crushing force, and indeed you can hear bones break beneath the power of the blow. Nonetheless, the hob raises his shield and moves to respond in kind, overcoming his wounds to slash at the dwarf with his longsword. The attack is not lacking in skill, but Gareth's armor turns the cut at the last minute.

Longsword attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15, damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Behind him, the Ironfang scout finally frees her axe and turns toward the door as well.

Everybody, you can go now. Remember to check out the battle map at the top of the page.

Jeb moves past the fighting, coming to a stop just in front of Lysander, the tip of her sword pointed at the axe-wielder, almost daring him to close the distance.

I'm banking on the hobgoblin they're ganging up on being dead by now, but otherwise take an AoO on her. Can't charge through allied spaces, and I don't want that TWf'er to get a free full attack for nothing.

As several of his band strike the hobgoblin in the front of the shrine, Bunko slips past Iteb and ducks into the space between the pews. While the lightly armored hobgoblin is distracted by the rest, he hopes to slip around her and strike from behind.

I don't think we have access to move our pawns on Shisumo's map. I agree with your assessment, Jeb - let the axeman come to us, or engage him on our terms. Also, since I'm hunkered down behind some pews...

Stealth: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

The legionnaire parries Iteb's sword with his own, despite his wounds, but is not fast enough to stop the her shield from slamming into his nose. There is a sound of shattering bone and the hob falls to the Shrine's wooden floor.

Wary of the second Ironfang warrior, the group slowly edges closer to her, and she bares her teeth, daring them to rush forward, her axes ready and waiting.

Sorry about the editing permissions on the map - I believe that has been fixed. Someone let me know if I'm wrong. Gareth still has an action before the Ironfng scout goes.

Taking his cue from the rest of the group, Gareth readies an attack on the scout if she comes in range.

She obliges.

Axes at the ready, the hobgoblin darts forward. Gareth's hammer comes down hard on her shoulder, and she tries to roll with it, but it's clear she's badly wounded.

Readied longhammer attack: 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (14) + 3 + 1 - 1 = 17, damage: 2d6 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (4, 5) + 3 + 3 = 15

She remains focused on her original target, though, and makes a cautious, probing attack at Jeb. The attack is skillful and precise, and Jeb feels the axe blade slice deep into her arm.

Thanks, GM! Feel free to bot me anytime needed. I'm especially busy on weekends, but during the week I'm fairly active :) I will post Gareth's action for next turn already, but I imagine my colleagues will skillfully get rid of the threat before it gets back to me.

Gareth takes his time to pull his longhammer back up, and then let it down with strength.

It doesn't, however, have much of precision - and it ends up crashing at the floor of the shrine with violence, as the Dwarf grunts in disappointment.

Wait... that movement provokes an AoO from Gareth too.

Jeb's counterattack avoids the scout's desperate attempt to block and cuts her nearly in half.

Looking around, it's clear the hobs had already begun claiming spoils from their pillaging, as there is a large sack on the floor next to the altar that contains an elm wand, a silver cup, a hand-sized darkwood carving of a butterfly, three bottles of Oldlaw whiskey, a large quantity of gold dust, 27 small semiprecious stones, and 76 gp, as well as a round ivory amulet engraved with Erastil’s bow-and-arrow holy symbol strung on a leather thong.

Knowledge (local), DC 10:
The ivory amulet belongs to a local hunter and woodswoman named Lirosa, who hangs it in the Shrine to "recharge" whenever she returns to Phaendar and collects it again as she leaves.

Perception, DC 18:
The altar contains a hidden alcove, within which you find a large quantity of silver dust, another wand (this one made with willow) and a necklace or pendant of some kind.

Just then the Shrine's rear door opens, and a short, blonde human woman with curly hair peeks in. She looks terrified but determined, and yet all but sobs with relief when she sees humans and dwarves rather than hobgoblins. She and more than half a dozen more refugees with her hustle from the shack next door into the Shrine and join their fellow Phaendarites. Although Lysander and Bunko already know her, the woman introduces herself as Rhyna, the assistant to Noelan Stagsward. "He hurried us into the shack," Rhyna sobs, "and went to try to defend the Shrine alone. I knew it was foolish, but he wouldn't... he wouldn't..." She can't finish the sentence, and grabs hold of Aubrin for support while she sobs briefly.

Knowledge (religion) or Perform (oratory), DC 16:
You know, and may perform if you wish, a brief ceremony - it will take much less than a minute total - to formally "close down" the shrine, leaving the holy elements untainted by the desecration that is no doubt shortly to take place here.

She keeps her injured arm as still as she can.

After the fall of the the last hobgoblin here in the shrine, Iteb sheathes the sword. While she hadn't struck anything this time around, it's clear she doesn't value the hobgoblin blade the same was Gareth does to his weapon. It had a faint sticky dried red to it, clearly staining the inside of the sheath as well. "Aye. Next we drop by my home." She said, eager to move on but still taking a glance around for anything that might help, while everyone situated themselves.

"Maybe find Negan even? Otherwise, my gear. Hopefully son." She stated, not really sure what to expect. She did hope that Mako was safe; If it was only a few more years of age, she could be proud he might die fighting in in such an onslaught, but as young as he was that sort of fate would be wasted on him. Thinking about it, there was another large place others might be on the way as well, "Maybe trading company first? Right beside house and workshop."

Male Elf Swashbuckler (Inspired Blade/Wildstrider) 1

Reprinting in case Lysander missed it:
The altar contains a hidden alcove, within which you find a large quantity of silver dust, another wand (this one made with willow) and a necklace or pendant of some kind.

Recognizing that Iteb's house is literally across the street from the Trading Company, and thus the decision can be delayed somewhat, the group begins to head that direction, moving through the town's outskirts to stay away from the Ironfang soldiers that are still focused on the Market Green for now.

GM Screen:
Encounter check: 1d100 ⇒ 38

As you go, you hear a loud roar and the clatter of lumber from the north; Ironfang siege engineers have begun knocking down buildings for wood and stone to build fortifications out of.

Fortunately, there is no sign of such activity nearby when you reach the Trading Company. A signpost by the road announces the clapboard wooden shop and barnlike smithy sharing a single large, stone wall to be the Phaendar Trading Company. The smithy’s double doors stand open, revealing a large, still-glowing forge within. Two slaughtered goats and a dead horse fill an adjacent animal pen. Many fresh scratches and dents mar the trading post’s heavy wooden door, and a chair leg juts through one broken window. Small flames lick at the thatch rooftop where a red-hot iron has been tossed. In the central courtyard between the animal pen and the shop, three Ironfang warriors, all bearing signs of injury, watch the flames flickering and slowly beginning to spread across the Trading Company's roof.

Across the street, Iteb's house and the Kusk Weaponshop stand with doors open and broken off their hinges. Faint shadows against the house's deeper darkness suggest movement within, but no lights glimmer to offer more information.

After getting close enough to see the door to her own workshop open, and her family's felled goats implying entrance by them, Iteb lost sight of all else including the trading company it seemed they were hoping to set fire to. Breaking out into a charge, stopping at the hobgoblins only because they were in the way, Iteb released a roaring scream only an Orc could be known for as she got close. Clearly not thinking about consequences of whether or not her voice would bring potential others to the scene in her own frustration.

Iteb will begin engaging the Hobs, and make a charging attack as soon as possible.

I want to be clear - the visible hobgoblins are in front of the Trading Post and not Iteb's shop; likewise, the animal pen with the dead goats and horse are in front of the Trading Post. Currently, other than that the doors to Iteb's house and shop are open and that someone is inside, there is no specific sign of life - related to Iteb or Ironfang or other - around Iteb's place.

Male Elf Swashbuckler (Inspired Blade/Wildstrider) 1

Before leaving the shrine, Lysander stops to check a hidden alcove that only just caught his eye. Quickly putting the contents in his pack, he follows the others, drawing his blade when Iteb launches into a charge.

Iteb:
You hurl yourself across the street, drawing the attention of the hobgoblins in the Trading Post's central yard, but you are into the house before they can react. Inside, the house is dark, but your darkvision shows clear signs of having been raided already: the house has been torn apart by searchers entirely careless of your valuables. You see no sign of a struggle, however, and there are no bodies here.

There is a passage to the south that leads to your storefront, and you turn your steps that direction. That is where you see them: three Ironfang warriors, apparently oblivious to your presence (no doubt they considered your shouting outside as just another part of the battle), busily ransacking your shop for weapons. Many they have already discarded and broken, but you see a number of your favored implements are still intact. Fighting in the shop will be tight quarters - you can put yourself into a corner to prevent a flank, but there's little chance you can keep from facing three-on-one if you charge in. Of course, the shop's front door is standing open, and perhaps your allies might come to your aid...

Everyone else:

Iteb roars in orcish rage and charges across the street toward her home. The hobs in the Trading Post yard turn as one, shocked, and start reaching for bows, but she's in the doorway before they can do anything.

If you wish to attack them, you will have a surprise round, thanks to Iteb's extremely effective distraction.

Ah, Jeb will only hit AC 18, then, since she's doing a partial charge, sorry. Don't think it makes much of a difference.

Partial charge still gets the full +2 attack bonus. Really the only restrictions are that you are limited to your move instead of double move and you can't pull a weapon as part of the charge, even with a +1 BAB, unless you have Quick Draw. Iteb, after seeing there was no apparent struggle in her home, or the storefront, and the lack of Mako cools her head considerably. Without a doubt, had she seen the body of either of her two men, she would have thrown caution to the wind and charged in on the three of them. As it stood now, however, she stepped back into her home and away from the storefront, and slowly back to the entrance to wait for the aid of her companions.

Much as she would enjoy to take on all three of the hobgoblins making a mess of her store, she understood that she fared a better chance finding her family with aid. Also, that a fight 1 on 3 uninjured hobs would bode poorly regardless of what her Orc blood encouraged her to do.

Probably won't engage in combat with the three outside, going to assume my first two or three'turns' of such a fight were entering, looking about, and returning to encourage the others to join her, assuming them capable of the three outside the trading post. I'll make a stealth to return out to the front unseen by the ones inside if you require it.

Ironfang Recruit, sickened: 1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 - 2 = 17

The sole surviving hob gathers her wits about her and turns, stabbing at Jeb as quickly as she can. The strike is skillful and precise, heading straight for Jeb's eye, but the dwarf rolls with the thrust and only a long line of red marks her scalp instead.

Longsword attack, sickened: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 4 - 2 = 22, damage: 1d8 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 - 2 = 2; crit confirm: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 4 - 2 = 16, crit damage: 1d8 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 - 2 = 1

Worst crit damage ever.

GM Screen:
Perception check, sickened: 1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 - 2 = 19
fire spread check: 1d100 ⇒ 76
