Mercy glares at Lamm;

"Hush now... Your time for demands, for threats is at an end Gaedren..."

She leans in and whispers to the old man;

Lamm:

"The strength of my faith is the only thing between you and the rope or the blade Gaedren... Do not test me or it..."

She addresses the others in the group;

"Rope. We need to bind him... and a rag too... for we have heard him enough"

Female Human (Shoanti) Bard (Arcane Duelist) 1 - hp 8/8

Kishta stands up. Her wounds are mostly healed, but her legs are still shaky. She walks over to stand next to Mercy.

"Save your lies and honeyed words for those who haven't lived under your 'gentle tutelage'. You provide a leaking roof for those without a home. You provide rotting food for the hungry. And all you ask in return is that they steal for you. That they kill for you. That they provide you with entertainment. And should they refuse...well, I could show you my scars. But you already know, dear shepherd. You already know."

Then she turns to her oldest friend and says, "Thank you, Mercy. I'm not sure I could have stayed my hand. I have no faith in justice, not in Korvosa, not with that wastrel on the throne. But I've killed enough for that old man."

Human (Varisian)

Arianna, believing the plan is to bring Lamm before what passes for a justice system in Korvosa can not hold her tongue any longer.

"Bring him before the Magistrate? Really? That's the grand plan. The same magisters that hung my brother based on nothing but the words of a pair of Lamm's thugs? If he has been in operation as long as you would all lead me to believe, is it not reasonable to assume that he is paid up with the right people? Taking him before the corrupt Magistrate is just the same as letting the bastard go. We can not afford to do that. We have all already paid the price for the Magistrate's indecision. We must put an end to Gaedren Lamm now."

Female Half Orc Paladin [Redeeming Warrior of the Holy Light] of Sarenrae 2 | HP 24/24 | AC 20/12/18 | F+8, R+5, W+8 | Perc +4, Darkvision 60ft | Init +3 | Move: 20ft. Harrow Card: Demon's Lantern, Harrow Points: 1 (1 Used)

Mercy eyes the witch curiously;

"Magistrates? No... they will not be consulted in this... but as Kishta says to kill him would be to stain yourself in his dark blood... I cannot and will not allow it..."

The half orc rises now but maintains her close stance to Lamm.

Male Half-orc Magus 2

Veklen breathes in deep, seeming to grab a firm hold onhimself. A fight about this would be disastrous. We must keep our tempers under control here. However, I must ask you, Mercy, what do you plan for him, if not to kill him or turn him over to the authorities? I must admit, I see only those two.

Female Half Orc Paladin [Redeeming Warrior of the Holy Light] of Sarenrae 2 | HP 24/24 | AC 20/12/18 | F+8, R+5, W+8 | Perc +4, Darkvision 60ft | Init +3 | Move: 20ft. Harrow Card: Demon's Lantern, Harrow Points: 1 (1 Used)

Mercy smiles;

"Brave Veklen - Sarenrae shall guide me... As her paladin I bring her light or the sword to those hearts that have been in the dark for too long... Gaedren is no different..."

She looks down again at Lamm;

"If you can be redeemed then the House of the Dawnflower will be your prison and reformatory both..."

Female Human (Shoanti) Bard (Arcane Duelist) 1 - hp 8/8

I took too long writing this...pretend it was right before Mercy's post. :)

Kishta looks around at her companions. They've all suffered at Gaedren's hands, they've all fought to put an end to his evil ways. They deserve to be heard.

"I suppose...there are other systems of justice. The noblest and most incorruptible of those is the Shoanti."

That's what the stories say, at least.

Or one of the churches. Milani's way would be to give the children knives, bring them down and let them pass judgement. I'm sure Sarenrae or Iomedae have their ways, have their people. I don't know - I can make suggestions, but in the end I trust Mercy with this."

Male Human Cavalier Honor Guard/Strategist

Waydon takes a break from searching the side room to weigh in on Lamm's fate.
"Lamm's continued existence is a threat to my family's safety. I fear and respect the gods but their churches are not prisons. Lamm is well-connected. He will get free from your church. No, Mercy I'm willing to fight you and anyone else who stands for Lamm. He dies. No other option is acceptable. All the energy you would spend on him could be spent on helping the children above. Leave if you do not wish to see my soul tainted with murder. For tonight I will kill Lamm, would you kill me to save that scum?"
Wayden will walk forward and draw his sword. He means to act.

I will accept any attacks of opportunity but will coup de grace Lamm.

Female Human (Shoanti) Bard (Arcane Duelist) 1 - hp 8/8

OK, it's contingent order time.

If Mercy does not move to stop him, Kishta will allow Waydon to strike at Lamm.

If Mercy opposes Waydon (verbally or otherwise), and Waydon draws his sword, then Kishta will cast Grease on his sword. (DC 14 Reflex save or drop)

I'm also assuming that we are still 1st level until we sleep -- is that true?

Male Half-orc Magus 2

Stop! Veklen bellows. Huss huge voice reverberates through the small room. There areother concerns and if you kill him with no discussion with those who helped subdue him, then you are acting as selfishly as he does. Veklen takes no actions to stop the man, but he stares at Waydon, letting his words condemn the man.

Kassen Battle Maps | RotRL Battle Maps

Yes. that is correct.

Loot for the small room:

-A teak cigar case inlaid with jade
-A gold ingot with the Chelian Coat of Arms
-A miniture gold crown
-A fist sized scrimshaw of a kraken with ruby eyes
-A silver ring with the inscription "For Emmah - The light of my nights"
-A very realistic, and highly scandalous carving of two entwined succubi
-A nice looking shuriken
-An adamantine arrowhead
-An abalone-shell holy symbol of Shelyn
-A vial of something
-An obsidian wand
-A crystalline vial of something else
-A bejeweled brooch depicting a psuedodragon and an imp coiled around each other with a broken clasp

AS Waydon approaches Lamm with murder in his eyes, the old man looks worried for the first time.

Female Half Orc Paladin [Redeeming Warrior of the Holy Light] of Sarenrae 2 | HP 24/24 | AC 20/12/18 | F+8, R+5, W+8 | Perc +4, Darkvision 60ft | Init +3 | Move: 20ft. Harrow Card: Demon's Lantern, Harrow Points: 1 (1 Used)

As Waydon walks forward, Mercy brings her whip to bear; she lashes out - not at the aggreived warrior, but at the weapon he wields;

"His blood is not yours to spill my friend... you have your son... others have lost far more..."

Disarm Attempt - Whip: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

Kassen Battle Maps | RotRL Battle Maps

By the way, Waydon still hasn't looked into the hatbox.

Male Human Cavalier Honor Guard/Strategist

so did you mean to say you drop your sword or shield, draw your whip and then make a disarm attempt? I ask because this is the first time your whip has made an appearance and you have a shield figured into your stats. Also just how are you proficient with a whip? Says its a free racial proficiency on your sheet but halforcs aren't proficient with whips unless they replace Orc ferocity with beastmaster which you haven't done. Not sure how to proceed with my actions given these descrepancies with raw.

That's right I have my son. And I need to keep him and the other children safe. Your plan is total madness. Last I time I went to temple I did not see a prison cell, unless you mean to lock him in the vault of Abadar? All of you listen to what Mercy is saying and explain to me how any of this makes sense?
Wayden picks his sword back up.

Male Human Cavalier Honor Guard/Strategist

Reflex save vs grease 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

Male Half-orc Magus 2

But at the very least, you owe these, who sacrificed as much as you to bring him down, a chance to speak their minds before you act. For me. My name has been sullied by this man. I need a way to clear it or else my safety is gone.

Male Human Cavalier Honor Guard/Strategist

" Hmm that's fair but that means we will have to bring him to the proper authorities. We did kill someone upstairs just for being in a place where we suspected Lamm was hiding. Personally I'd be happy to vouch for your innocence and say that Lamm committed the crime. He'll never confess anyways. Are we bringing that halforc to justice as well?
Wayden will go search the hatbox while the rest figure out their position.

Female Half Orc Paladin [Redeeming Warrior of the Holy Light] of Sarenrae 2 | HP 24/24 | AC 20/12/18 | F+8, R+5, W+8 | Perc +4, Darkvision 60ft | Init +3 | Move: 20ft. Harrow Card: Demon's Lantern, Harrow Points: 1 (1 Used)

If you checked my character you'd see Mercy is a City Raised Half Orc - thus gains whip and longsword in lieu of standard half orc weapons. No worries regards the whip/changeover etc - I'll happily keep it my scimitar and deal Non Lethal Damage... Salsa's call...

Above Attack Roll = 19 +4 = 23
NL Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Critical Threat: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Regardless of the PvP implications Mercy is not about to just let Waydon kill Lamm in cold blood... DMS could you sort out the above regards timescale - we've too many scenarios kicking about above

Male Catfolk Magus 2

"Waydon wait." Dreqar yowls in frustration as Mercy and Kishta try to stop him. "I really don't care if you kill him or not, but I want my answers first...we all deserve answers. I have waited to long, so for now just hold, please."

Male Human Cavalier Honor Guard/Strategist

Waydon stops.

Kassen Battle Maps | RotRL Battle Maps

Well it's moot point now, but here's how I had pictured it.
-End of fight. Weapons and Shields stowed (Note: That's what I'm assuming. Holding weapons out is not really that good of an idea unless you expect trouble.)
-Tie up Lamm
-Heal Lamm
-Lamm taunts the group
-Raseri responds back
-Argueing over what to do with him. Waydon checks out the strongbox
-Waydon comes back into the big room. Threatens to kill Lamm.
-Mercy and Kishta intervene. Mercy Draws whip, Attempts Disarm.
-Dreqar pleads with Waydon.
-Waydon stops.

I'll try and have a post with Lamm's responses to your questions later today or tonight, so go ahead and get them in. I want to try and get out of here by the end of the week.

Female Human (Shoanti) Bard (Arcane Duelist) 1 - hp 8/8

And people wonder why we do not trust the Guard, when one of their own is so willing to perform a summary execution.

"Be careful what you do in your son's name, Waydon. When I tell the tale, I will tell it in full. Have you even asked him what he wants?"

"I care nothing for this man's life. But his fate should be in the hands of those he has oppressed. He has wronged all of us, but only a few have had him hold their lives in his hands. Those are the ones who should now hold his life in theirs."

"Mercy. Me. This woman. And the children upstairs. I would accept their collective justice. All arguments on the table, then one decision. And should the choice be death, then Waydon, I acknowledge the right of your son to be the executioner."

"The oppressed have had our power taken away once by Gaedren Lamm. Shall their power be stripped again by those claiming to act on their behalf in the name of justice or vengeance? I say no."

"And once that matter has been decided, can we discuss what shall be done with the children? Mercy, if Lamm is to be held by the church of Sarenrae, they cannot go there -- he must never be allowed near them. Milani can take some, but we are a small congregation, we have not the resources to care for them all."

She turns to Arianna and the Magi. "I know that you are here because of great wrongs done to people you care about. I wish their voices could be heard as well. Alas, the dead cannot speak -- I would give the decision to them as well, if only they could."

Male Dwarf Crusader / 1

Gustag looks on, watching the exchange with more than a passing interest. Lamm had kept him under his heel for years, after all, but he also felt the weight of Mercy's argument for...well, just that. What would his own faith require? Nothing, perhaps, due to the individualistic nature of it. He clears his throat, the gesture sounding like rocks being ground together.

Ere now...one way or t'other...we got 'im. Most importan' thing is that this creature can't hurt any more lil' ones like 'e hurt so many of us 'er our own. Now, I dunno all a' that fancy legal stuff...I just know that where I come from, there's accountability. I'm satisfied, meself, with 'im bein' locked away. But, there are some a' you tha's lost more than jes' time for yerself, an' that's hard ta' count.

He raises a thick brow as he looks to Raseri. Whaddya' think, girl? Yer own were taken by this beast of a man...what would you wanna' see done?

Male Half-orc Magus 2

Veklen steps back with Waydon, then speaks to him, If you think your word will clear my name, then I will relinquish my right to Lamm's punishment. So long as he is punished in some way, I do not care.

Then Veklen gives a start as he begins to shrink back to normal size. Ah. That's better. He smiles than turns back to Waydon, If you are done searching this room, would you like to go back to that barge with me and see if we can find anything good there?

Raseri looks a little surprised to be asked what to do about Lamm. She thinks for a moment before looking at Gustag.

"I- I would wish to see him pay for all of the heartache he has caused. I want to make sure that he could never hurt anyone like he has hurt us. What the proper price for his crimes is, though, I do not know."

She sighs and looks at the dwarf.

"Are my sisters safe?"

I figured that Waydon would have only had time to search the strongbox before popping in.
Sorry for the delay, I'll try and keep things moving.

Male Dwarf Crusader / 1

Gustag nods, a fatherly smile on his face, then pats the girl's shoulder. They are, indeed, me' girl. Yer sisters are up above wit' one of our own. They're safe, but there's no doubt that they'd wanna' see ya as soon as possible. Once we clean up this mess, I'll take ya' up there meself.

Human (Varisian)

Arianna grumbles to herself, "There is only one suitable price for his crimes...a life for a life."

At Kishta's council, Mercy nods slowly;

"...you are right, the faiths should take the children... or at least give them the offer of a home... like we were afforded"

The shield-maid of Sarenrae smiles sadly, then looks down at the prone man when the others speak;

"Gaedren... listen to these people... all of us require revenge or at the least closure... and here I stand defending you from those whose hearts are purer than yours is black..."

Mercy sighs and steps away from her defensive stance over Lamm, hands outstretched;

"I will not defend him, nor protect him further... I sought only to offer him the chance of clemency... to recognise his crimes... but also recognise that if you kill him... the blood, his blood will stain you... and for those as corrupt as Lamm, death... violent death can often just be the beginning of their horrors..."

The paladin bows her head in silent prayer

Relief spreads over Raseri's face, and a tired genuine smile forms on her lips.

"Thank you, Gus. I owe you."

At the realization that his life was in very real danger of being snuffed out, Lamm's eyes go wide in horror.

"P-please! I beg of you, spare me! I'll answer for my crimes. I'll answer any question you ask, just spare what little of my life is left!"

Male Dwarf Crusader / 1

Gustag smiles at Raseri again, then steps between her and the monster Lamm. He snorts and points a massive sausage of a finger at the man who had taken so many years of his young life, and perhaps who had, though indirectly, forced the death of his father.

Looks like yer dice 'as been thrown, Lamm, an' ya' came up short. Ye'll pay fer yer crimes, but there's nothin' we can do fer the time ya' took away from these young kids. Bah! Ye'd say anythin' ta' save yer slimy skin anyhow! What could ya' 'ave ta' say that'd be worth our while?

Male Human Cavalier Honor Guard/Strategist

Waydon searches the hat box.

Kassen Battle Maps | RotRL Battle Maps

Waydon:
The source of the flies, and the part of the stench of decay becomes obvious. Though decay has set in and it is badly preserved with splotches of caked on makeup that attempt to give it sembalance of life, one of the things in the hatbox is Zellara's head. The body is not there.

Meanwhile, Lamm is on hands and knees, a panicked smile on his weather-worn face.

"T-the cat asked about his friend, Vensi. It-it was an accident! We wanted to make sure she didn't sound the alarm. Believe me I would never have had her killed! She just stumbled upon us and I didn't want to be caught."

Sense Motive DC 10:
He's lying through teeth about how Vensi died. He's telling the truth about her being in the wrong place at the wrong time though.

Mercy stoicly stands listening and watching Lamm pleads;

Sense Motive:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Matter of factly she states;

"He lies."

The half orc shouts to Gaedren;

"Lamm, the Dawnflower can see your lies, so please... for your own sake... words of truth, lest you choke on your falsehoods..."

Male Half-orc Magus 2

Veklen growls as he half listens to Lamm. Find anything good there Waydon?

Have we finished with the side room? I lost track.

Male Human Cavalier Honor Guard/Strategist

"I found a lot, but its certainly not good or clear to me how this is possible."
Waydon returns to the room with the head of Vellara in his hands. He swats away some of the flies in irritation. He is puzzled and angry.

"Mercy, forgive my harsh and hasty actions earlier. You're too good for this world friend.
I know not what to make of this head. I swear we saw this very woman earlier, did we not?
Lamm, you live to speak. What treachery is this?
If you have nothing to say I think its time we put an end to this. I have no qualms about being the one to do so. For those who wish to have no part in this, I suggest you step outside. There are other items in the storeroom to be retrieved and examined later."

List of items found:
-A teak cigar case inlaid with jade
-A gold ingot with the Chelian Coat of Arms
-A miniture gold crown
-A fist sized scrimshaw of a kraken with ruby eyes
-A silver ring with the inscription "For Emmah - The light of my nights"
-A very realistic, and highly scandalous carving of two entwined succubi
-A nice looking shuriken
-An adamantine arrowhead
-An abalone-shell holy symbol of Shelyn

-An obsidian wand
-A crystalline vial of something else
-A bejeweled brooch depicting a psuedodragon and an imp coiled around each other with a broken clasp

Male Catfolk Magus 2

Dreqar looks to Mercy and her tone, trusting the paladin more then Lamm's own words, he turns to see Waydon with Zellara's head. "That...but she..." He looks over at Veklen to see if the fellow magi was as shocked as he was. "Right...finish it...but I'm not going anywhere. We all need to see this done." he spoke as he he thought about Zellara and his dream before that. Twin maybe...surely he couldn't of got her and beat us here. And to get so close to each of us, without us knowing.

Male Half-orc Magus 2

Veklen stares in confusion. No, she-- he cuts off abruptly and turns to Lamm. Veklen works his mouth silently for a moment before shaking his head. He is hopeless Mercy. I cannot fathom how this can be possible, but this,[b] he gestures to the head, [b]is unbearable.

Male Dwarf Crusader / 1

Gustag sets his feet in a wide stance and crosses his arms as he looks on. He seems quite ready to whatch whatever justice is to be meted out to the vile old man, but he also seems ready to let someone else deal it out.

Kassen Battle Maps | RotRL Battle Maps

Lamm is struck speechless as the head is presented to all.

Raseri, looks like she's about to vomit and staggers over to the door.

The flies swirl around buzzing in dismay. and Waydon can see something at the bottom of the box underneath the bloody stump that used to attach to the woman's body.

To help speed this up, Here's the rest of the treasure in the fishery.
-4 pouches full of copper coins (200 CP)
-2 pouches full of silver coins (100 SP)
-A nice looking breastplate

Anyone wanna roll Appraise checks?

Male Human Cavalier Honor Guard/Strategist

Waydon notices something at the bottom of the box and he hands it to the others.
There's something in this box. Could someone get it out for me? I have some other business to attend to.
Waydon stows his shield and draws his bastard sword. With confidence he strides forward to Lamm. With the calm of a man doing something routine, Waydon grabs Lamm's shoulder and stands him up but doesn't let go. Waydon looks him dead in the eye. With decisive ease he jams the blade into Lamm's gut all the way to the hilt. Waydon watches the look in Lamm's eyes as the life flows out him. As the body slackens and grows heavy, Waydon releases his grip on Lamm's shoulder and watches as his body slides off of the blade and crashes unceremoniously to the ground.
With his son's safety secured, Waydon turns to the group.
Well what was in the box?

Kassen Battle Maps | RotRL Battle Maps

Lamm manages to squeak out a, "No! PleaACK!" before he dies on Waydon's blade.

Anyone gonna stick their hand in the box?

Male Half-orc Magus 2

As Waydon performs Lamm's execution, Veklen stares solemnly, watching the man die. Thenhe reaches into the box to find out what was inside it.

Female Half Orc Paladin [Redeeming Warrior of the Holy Light] of Sarenrae 2 | HP 24/24 | AC 20/12/18 | F+8, R+5, W+8 | Perc +4, Darkvision 60ft | Init +3 | Move: 20ft. Harrow Card: Demon's Lantern, Harrow Points: 1 (1 Used)

Mercy watches Lamm's death unfold with sadness in her eyes;

Your first true test for me Dawnflower and I am found wanting...

As the black hearted shepherd passes this mortal coil, the paladin gives a slight reserved shake of the head;

"We should pray that is the end of his terrors and not the beginning..."

Kassen Battle Maps | RotRL Battle Maps

Veklen pulls out something wrapped in the bloodstained cloth with a little difficulty because of the congealed blood. As he unwraps it, he sees a very familiar design facing him.

This is Zellara's Harrow Deck.

Almost forgot, you also find Raseri's gear: A set of leather armor, a greatsword, a dagger, and a quarterstaff.

Male Human Cavalier Honor Guard/Strategist

Let's get out of here. Be sure to strip Lamm and his accomplices of anything valuable or useful. They won't be needing it. I think we need to get these children someplace safe. Mercy, how about your temple? After securing the children's safety, we can find someone to locate their parents or find them new homes. We also need to go back to Zellara. Though I can't say that I know what will happen when we do.

Male Catfolk Magus 2

"Right, let's put everything on the dock and we can divvy everything up I guess." Dreqar speaks in a low tone, his eyes still going to the severed head. "I agree we need to go back..if anything...I mean...if this is...I think she deserves a proper funeral." He struggles to find the right words, but still makes the point.

Male Half-orc Magus 2

As they are leaving, Veklen stops at the door he saw hidden in the barge. He opens it and begins to search for anythingelse of value.
